MEMBER BULLETIN

SUMMER 2015

FROM THE DIREC TOR Dear Member, As the summer heats up and the museum bustles with summer travelers, I would like to thank our outstanding volunteer workforce who never seems to take a vacation from the sizeable job of staffing and administering the ZMA. Whether it’s our visitor services staff who greet and assist museum guests, the Muskingum County Master Gardeners who beautify museum grounds, or Beaux Arts Club members who plan and present the ZMA’s only annual fundraiser—Art in the Garden, our volunteers work year-round to create a more beautiful institution and a more meaningful museum experience for our community.

I would also like to thank our volunteer Board of Trustees who work tirelessly behind the scenes to govern this institution. The ZMA has a total of twenty trustees, five of whom rotated off the board this past June, having fulfilled their service terms. I would like to thank Mrs. Jody Ballas, Dr. Chad Brown, Mr. Richard Duncan, Mr. Alan King, and Mr. Paul McClelland whose skills, experience, and insight guided this organization over the last six years and provided an even firmer foundation on which this museum can grow in the coming years. Also in June, the museum elected Mrs. Alice Graham, Mrs. Dianna LeVeck, Dr. Richard Tuck, Mrs. Susan Nash, and Mr. Dan Vincent to the Board of Trustees. Please join me in welcoming them to the board. I look forward to seeing you at the museum soon. Sincerely,

Laine Snyder

MUSEUM INFORMATION

June 11, 2015–August 21, 2015 One of the great pleasures of working for the Ohio Arts Council, and the years of experience gained as Riffe Gallery Director, is the fortunate position it puts me in to assist Ohio arts organizations with their jury needs. I am most grateful to have the honor of jurying the prestigious Zanesville Museum of Art's 71st Annual Juried Exhibition. Thank you, Laine Snyder, for the generous invitation, and to Andy Near for making the process run so smoothly. I find the experience of jurying a show to be a visual dance, over many, many hours, filled with joy, anxiety, surprise, challenge and significant gratification. The scores of artists from across the state of Ohio who submitted work for consideration in the 71st juried exhibition did not disappoint. There were works created from every medium imaginable, various sizes and scales represented, a myriad of subject matters explored, and artistic talent plentiful. Ultimately, the pieces selected stirred some sort of deep emotion ranging from amusement, shock, contentment, tension, empathy, affection and hope. What a meaningful and satisfying way to spend a day! Constantly, I am amazed by the powerful impact art has on our lives, and the effect one piece holds for one individual can mean something entirely different to the next person. Art also inspires great dialog and sometimes even debate among viewers. I suspect, and hope(!), the selections made for the Zanesville Museum of Art's 71st Annual Juried Exhibition will spark conversation and tickle the imaginations of all who have the chance to visit this gem of a museum during the run of the show. Finally, I wish to thank all of the artists who stepped up and submitted work for consideration, and convey hearty congratulations to all who were selected for exhibition. You make this original Michigander so proud to call Ohio home. August 15, 2015−December 15, 2015 This exhibition explores America’s fascination with the closing frontier. This exhibition is held in conjunction with the community-wide initiative On the Same Page Muskingum (OTSPM), which is promoting literacy and civic pride by sponsoring a community reading of the novel Riders of the Purple Sage by Zanesville native, Zane Grey.
