ADULT PROGRAMS REEL MEAL | Arts & the Mind Join us and our Reel Meal partners in viewing this fascinating documentary on the powerful impact the arts have on our minds. Hear how involvement in music, dance, painting, and poetry can engage at risk teens, offer healing to PTSD sufferers, and ward off dementia. Discover and discuss the scientific research that demonstrates how the arts are vital to our mental development and well-being. For another amazing story about the healing power of art, visit ZMA special exhibition New Horizons | Contemporary Watercolors by Christiane Curry, on view through February 9. Saturday, January 19, 6–8 pm. Free and open to the public. Donations to Reel Meal welcome. This program is held at Seilers’ Studio and Gallery, 129 S. 7th Street, Zanesville. GUIDED GALLERY SKETCH HOUR | First Saturday of the Month

Be inspired by the ZMA’s extensive collections and special exhibitions, and enjoy creative company. Join a member of the ZMA education staff the first Saturday of each month and sketch your favorite artworks in one of the museum’s eighteen galleries. Saturdays, January 5, February 2, and March 2, 10–11 am, at the ZMA. Free to museum members, $7 per session for not-yet-members. Drawing benches and boards are provided, or bring your favorite sketchbook or art journal from home. No experience required. Recommended for teens and adults. Register one week in advance.

ART ON TAP | Social Creativity Hour Tap into your inner artist with the ZMA at Weasel Boy Brewing Company. Enjoy an evening of fine craft beer, wine, great food, and creative company. Generously sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. James and Joan Cameron and Family. Tuesdays, January 15, February 19, and March 19, 6–7 pm. Free and open to the public. No experience required. All materials provided. This program is held at Weasel Boy Brewing Company, 126 Muskingum Avenue, Zanesville. No registration required.

Calligrams | January 15

Arrange words and letters to create an original work of art. A calligram is a poem, phrase, or word in which the type face, calligraphy, or handwriting is arranged to form a visual image. The image created by the words expresses what the word, or words, say.

Abstract Gold Leaf | February 19

Try your hand at gold leaf and create a one-of-a-kind black, white and gold piece of abstract art.

Macramé | March 19

Create a macramé plant hanger to give your indoor green space an updated look. Macramé is a form of decorative textile produced using knotting, rather than weaving or knitting, techniques.

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP WITH KAY KENYON

Explore the beauty of watercolor with Southeast Ohio Watermedia Society member, Kay Kenyon in this three-hour workshop. Whether you are working on mastering your skills or just beginning, Kenyon will guide participants through classic watercolor techniques to create a beautiful original watercolor painting. Saturday, February 23, 1–4 pm, at the ZMA. $40 for members, $55 for not-yet-members. No experience required. All materials provided. Register by February 16.

BEGINNING DRAWING | Charcoal and Pastel Enter the sumptuous world of charcoal and pastel drawing. Experiment with blending, layering, color mixing, and more in this two-part workshop. See how the line blurs between painting and drawing as you use vibrant pastels to create original works of art inspired by special ZMA exhibition Catching the Light: American Impressionism in conjunction with Cincinnati Art Galleries. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike, join talented local artist and ZMA education team member Hillary Hendricks to expand your drawing skills. Saturdays, February 9 and February 16, 1–4 pm, at the ZMA. $80 for members, $100 for not-yet-members. No experience required. All materials provided. Register by February 2.

A BOOK APART | Book Discussion Join us in reading James Philip Head’s An Affair with Beauty: The Mystique of Howard Chandler Christy: The Magic of Youth, and explore the life of this popular artist as told from the perspective of his second wife, model, and muse Nancy. Discuss this first book in the An Affair with Beauty trilogy with ZMA collection and exhibition manger Sarah Franklin. Thursday, February 28, 6–7 pm, at the ZMA. Free and open to the public. CHILDREN’S and TEEN PROGRAMS Jumpst

| For Children 15 months–4 years

JumpstART your preschooler’s creativity at the ZMA every second Friday of each month. Expose your toddler to the exciting world of art. Each session is unique as you both experiment with new materials, discover art-making techniques, and explore hidden treasures in the ZMA’s galleries. Fridays, January 11, February 8, March 8, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. Free for members and not-yet-members. Recommended for ages 15 months–4 years. Registration required. Shape and Color | January 11 Explore the ZMA galleries with your preschooler and find exciting shapes and colors. Use your favorites to create a colorful collage inspired by the work of Ralston Thompson. Mask Making | February 8 Discover the many shapes, colors, and styles of traditional African masks. Choose your favorites to use on your own mixedmedia mask sculpture. Paint | March 8 Discover the many ways artists use paint throughout the ZMA galleries with your preschooler and experiment with several exciting painting techniques.

ART VOYAGERS | For Children Grades K–3

Become a ZMA Art Voyager, and begin your art adventure! Each month children in grades kindergarten through third will travel through history or explore the globe to learn about a different culture or a new art form. Create an exciting project, and receive a stamp in your Art Voyagers passport. Each stamp gets you one step closer to a secret treasure. Saturdays, January 12, February 9, and March 9, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades K–3. Registration required. Ironton, Ohio | January 12 Journey to the very southern tip of Ohio and see the bold, colorful works of Ralston Thompson, and create your own vibrant, geometric collage. Africa | February 9 Explore the ZMA galleries and discover the rich cultural history behind African masks. Design your own mask inspired by traditional African motifs. United States, 1880s–1920s | March 9 Travel back in time and explore special ZMA exhibition Catching the Light: American Impressionism in conjunction with Cincinnati Art Galleries. Use traditional impressionistic painting techniques to create a beautiful landscape.

MASTER’S APPRENTICE | For Children in Grades 4–6

Become an apprentice to masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Georgia O’Keeffe, or Mary Cassatt. Each month children in grades four through six will investigate the art, style, and technique used by a different master artist, then they will create their own masterpiece. For each class, participants will earn apprentice rewards to add to their very own artist palette. Fill the palette with colorful rewards to receive unique art supplies and discounts on future programs. Saturdays, January 19, February 16, and March 16, 10:30–11:30 am, at the ZMA. $5 per session for members, $7 not-yet-members. All materials and a painting apron provided. Recommended for grades 4–6. Registration required. Ralston Thompson | January 19 Gain insight into the world of abstract art through the work of Ohio artist, Ralston Thompson. Use art elements such as color, shape, and line to create your own geometric, abstract Romuald Hazoumè | February 16 Discover how contemporary African artist Romuald Hazoumè uses recycled materials to create artworks inspired by traditional African ceremonial masks. Create your own upcycled sculpture inspired by masks from the ZMA permanent collection. Lucy Stanberry Fauley | March 16 Become inspired by the exciting brushwork of Columbus artist Lucy Stanberry Fauley and other American Impressionists and paint your own impressionistic landscape.


CHILDREN’S and TEEN PROGRAMS GIRL SCOUT DAY AT THE ZMA | Outdoor Art

Create exciting art projects, enjoy the spring weather, and complete all the steps to earn your Daisy Outdoor Art Maker badge at the Zanesville Museum of Art. Saturday, March 30, 1–4 pm, at the ZMA. $9 per participant. All materials provided. FREE FAMILY DAY AT THE ZMA | Make an Impression Make an impression with hands-on art activities inspired by new ZMA exhibition Catching the Light: American Impressionism in conjunction with Cincinnati Art Galleries. Paint, sculpt, and draw using vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and more exciting impressionistic techniques. Bring the whole family for an afternoon of creative fun, music, and delicious snacks. DOCENT PROGRAM NEW MEMBERS INFORMATION SESSION The ZMA is currently seeking passionate, enthusiastic volunteers to join our docent program. Docents greatly enhance a visitor's museum experience by providing engaging and interactive guided tours. Enjoy the benefits of the docent program, which include complimentary training sessions where you will learn how to conduct tours of the ZMA's permanent collection and our rotating exhibitions. Becoming a ZMA docent is an excellent opportunity to meet and socialize with other community members, and to interact with museum visitors of all ages. Share your passion for art with others, and help us create meaningful experiences for our visitors by joining our docent program. Friday, February 22, 12 pm, at the ZMA in the Linn Auditorium. No experience required. Register by February 15.
