Today there are over 7.2 million British women and girls playing sports, but that’s still 1.55 million less than the number of men and boys. Girls often avoid exercising because they’re nervous about their bodies. Sometimes, even if they want to try a sport, they can’t find teams and clubs with places for girls. This Girl Can is an organisation that encourages all women and girls to start exercising. It uses social media to tell girls that their size, shape and skills don’t matter – they can still exercise and have fun doing it! Shauna Coxsey and sisters Bleta and Londrita are part of the This Girl Can campaign. Let’s meet them!

Shauna is an amazing climber. She’s got two World Cups and an award from Queen Elizabeth II! Shauna wants to see more women climbers in the future, so she teaches girls how to climb in her free time. ❯

I’m good at those, but I don’t know anything about capoeira. Max Oh, so the real reason you don’t want to come is because you think you can’t do it? Josh Well, yeah – I don’t want to look silly! BRIAN SKERRY

THE PERFECT SHOT ‘A picture paints a thousand words’ and that is why photographs are so powerful. How many times have you hit the ‘like’ button on a social media post showing some cute baby bears, a tiger taking a bath in a forest pool, or a monkey doing tricks? These amazing photos can go viral overnight, but how far do photographers go to get the perfect shot? For some, the answer is too far. They interfere with animals and the places they live, making them scared and stressed. It’s up to the photographer to make sure he or she treats the animals they are photographing with respect. Brian Skerry is a great example of a photographer that respects wildlife and still takes powerful, award-winning pictures.

So, how does he practise

ETHICAL PHOTOGRAPHY? • DON’T CHANGE THE ENVIRONMENT Skerry works for National Geographic magazine and their first rule of photography is ‘do no harm’. He knows that even moving branches and leaves to get a better picture can alter the natural habitat and upset local wildlife.

• BE PATIENT It takes a long time to get a great picture. ‘It doesn’t happen on every trip or certainly every dive,’ says Skerry. ‘It really comes down to the animals. They have to allow me into their world, but inevitably over the years, over the decades, those moments happen.’

• DON’T DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF Skerry is particularly well-known for his underwater photographs of fascinating sea creatures, especially sharks. As sharks are dangerous, a lot of photographers use big cages to protect themselves, but Skerry rarely uses them. ‘Many species won’t approach a cage,’ he says, ‘because they are afraid.’ Instead, he has a metal suit to keep himself safe.

• BE HONEST Tell your viewers exactly how, where and when you took your photos. Is that lion in the wild, on a game reserve, or in a zoo? You might think no one can find out, but if they do, then you lose their respect forever. ‘One of the things I tell young photographers at the end of the day is, never forget that your reputation is everything,’ says Skerry. ‘You have to do it right.’

feel? (Give two answers.) Who employs Brian Skerry? What does Skerry wear to protect himself from sharks? What does Skerry say a good picture depends on? Who should photographers be honest with? What does Skerry tell new photographers is very important? What does Skerry believe photographs can help create? Complete the text with words from the list. There is one word that you do not need. • sea • social • underwater • award-winning • metal • natural • environmental • land

Brian Skerry is a(n) 0) award-winning photographer that respects the wildlife he photographs by making sure not to alter 1) ...................................................................................... habitats. He tries not to draw attention to himself when he takes 2) ...................................................................................... photographs of 3) ...................................................................................... creatures by wearing only a(n) 4) ...................................................................................... suit for protection. He understands the value of patience and he believes photographers should be honest with their viewers about how they got a good shot. He uses his photographs to raise awareness about 5) ............................................................. problems in National Geographic magazine and on 6) ......................................................................... media.

4

Photography Ethics Always ask permission when taking a picture of another person. If someone asks you to delete a photo of them, delete it immediately. If you didn’t take a picture yourself, never post it on the Internet without getting permission from the photographer. Don’t stage photos by altering the natural habitat or encouraging wildlife to behave in unnatural ways. Don’t over-edit pictures. It’s fine to add a filter or make the colours brighter, but don’t delete anything or add objects that aren’t in the original picture. Be respectful. Don’t make animals feel anxious, or people feel uncomfortable, just to get a good shot.

5

OVER TO YOU! Read the definition below. Then, create a leaflet about the DOs and DON’Ts of ethical photography. Include pictures to illustrate your points.

Ethical photography is related to respect. Before taking photos, we should ask ourselves if we respect the subjects we are photographing: people, animals or landscapes. 6

We can learn a lot about environmental problems from images on social media, on websites and in magazines, and Brian Skerry knows it. “Photography can be a powerful instrument for change,” he says. However, he also knows how important it is to respect the creatures he photographs.

GROUPWORK Read the text below. Why is it important to be ethical when taking pictures? Discuss.

PREPARING FOR THE TASK 1

Read the extract. What is it mainly about? Choose the correct option (A, B, or C).

In Spain, it’s common for people to live close to their relatives. In the block of flats where I live, my grandparents are downstairs, while my aunt and cousin are in the flat upstairs. I like it. My grandma is always busy in the kitchen, and gives me tasty treats when I visit! Then we sometimes sit on the balcony and chat for hours. A B C

2

A person growing up in a block of flats. A person’s relationship with their extended family. A person’s difficulties living with his/her family.

Read the question and underline the keywords. Then, read the extract in Ex. 1 again and answer the question. Where does the writer mainly socialise with his grandparents?

Teen life in Japan In last week’s issue of Teen International Magazine, we asked readers to send in articles about their daily life. Here’s one of our favourites: from Hisako, aged 17, in Osaka, Japan. ❯ On weekdays, I wake up at 6.30 am, have a shower and get dressed in my school uniform. Then I eat breakfast and ride my bike to school. It’s nearby, so my parents don’t need to drive me there. Classes start at 8 am. We have all our classes in the same classroom and sit in the same desk each day, so a lot of students decorate their desk with pictures or toys.

36

Each day, we have seven lessons, for 50 minutes each. This year, I have ten subjects – English and IT are my favourites. We have one long break for 40 minutes and two smaller breaks. School finishes at 3 pm, but before we leave students and teachers do souji or ‘honourable cleaning’. This is when everyone spends around 15 minutes cleaning the school. This includes mopping the floors, taking out the rubbish, and – the chore I usually choose – cleaning the windows. The school doesn’t employ anyone to clean, so we do it all ourselves.

For three days a week, I stay at school until 6 pm to practise with the school’s table tennis team. We practise very seriously because we want to win trophies for our school! On Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, I attend a juku from 5 pm to 10 pm. These are private schools where students get extra practice for the university entrance exam. I’m taking this test next year, at the end of secondary school. This test decides what you can study at university, so it’s really important.

In Japan, there’s a lot of pressure for children to do well at school, so I don’t have a lot of free time. And my parents say I definitely can’t have a part-time job. Actually, the only time I see my friends outside school is on Sunday when we hang out at the shopping centre. It’s nice to have at least one day to relax!

Spesso andiamo a fare surf. • I verbi che esprimono gusti e preferenze sono seguiti da un nome o da un altro verbo in -ing: like, love, dislike, hate, enjoy, prefer, fancy, don’t mind, can’t stand + forma in -ing. I don’t like playing sports outside in the winter. Non mi piace praticare sport all’aperto in inverno. Can’t stand si usa solo alla forma negativa. I can’t stand watching football on TV.

Lisa wants to buy a new pair of football boots. Lisa vuole comprare un nuovo paio di scarpe da calcio.

3. Verbi + forma base

• Il verbo modale can, invece, è seguito dalla forma base (= infinito senza to). He can sing very well. (Lui) Sa cantare molto bene.

THE SMILING SHARK 1) ..................................... Sea View Road, Brighton Open Monday-Sunday 11 am – 2) ..................................... pm

Hi everyone! I’m sure that you all know of British writer J. K. Rowling’s famous books about Harry Potter. I’m a huge fan! In the books, Harry goes to a school for wizards. He learns about magic and plays a sport called quidditch. He’s really good at it. Do you know that you can also play quidditch in real life? I’m on my school team! In the books, players ride on flying broomsticks, but of course our broomsticks can’t fly – we run around with them between our legs! In a game, there are two teams, each with seven players: one Seeker, three Chasers, two Beaters and one Keeper. The Chasers try to throw the ball through three hoops at each end of the pitch to score points. The Beaters try to stop them and the Keeper guards the hoop. The Seeker – that’s me – catches the Snitch. In the books, it’s a tiny magic ball that can fly! In real life, a player dressed in yellow carries it in a special bag. If I catch the Snitch, my team wins! It sounds crazy, but quidditch is good for practising teamwork skills and it’s great exercise! You might think you look silly – and you do! – but you’re sure to have a laugh! What’s your favourite sport – real or pretend – from a book or film. How do you play it? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Who is the writer of the Harry Potter books? What do players ride in the books? How many players are on each quidditch team? Who do the Beaters try to stop? What does the Keeper do? Who catches the Snitch? What can the Snitch do in the books? What are the benefits of quidditch? (Give two answers)
