OF BORROWERS AND BRICOLAGE Hamilton Township, NJ • 2020-2021 Thesis Advisor: Kate John-Alder

This thesis project looks at the traditional process of mapping and analysis and aims to overlay new layers of meaning through the material qualities found in objects. Each installationcreated for the Abbott Farm Marshlands is a collection of salvaged objects and plants re-contextualized into an objet trouvé, a once discarded item imbued with new purpose and presented as a gift. 4

Timeline of the Abbott Farm Marshlands with a focus on anthropogenic change and the natural processes within the marsh. It is vital to note the marsh's history as an amusement park and an archaeological excavation site.

RECLAIM VALLEY CEMETERY Bordentown, NJ • Fall 2019 Instructor: Kate John-Alder

When a loved one passes, the process of burying the body is celebrated for those who will remember the dearly departed. This design takes the concept of the balikbayan box and reshapes the landscape through the remnants of reclaimed coffins and compostable planter coffins which aid in returning the body to the earth. 10

*Made In collaboration with Zhaoxuan Wang and Dianne Le

Located at what was once Joseph Bonaparte's Point Breeze Property , this diagramatic section explores the site's current views and surrounding context.

11

This section conveys the body composting facility and subsequent placement of the biodegradable, seed infused coffins containing recomposed soil in the cemetery. 12

The plan conveys the placement the coffins in rows roughly 20' apart and shows how these rows break whenever they meet a ridge or dip in the landscape. The englargement plans convey the growth of stackable planter-coffins over time, which eventually make vegetated, lush mounds.

13

The section and diagrammatic map (above) illustrates the location of cemeteries along the Delaware River at risk of flooding and the removal of their caskets to be relocated to Reclaim Valley cemetery. 14

The concept section illustrates the liminal boundary between the cemetery (culture) and Crosswicks Creek (nature) and creates a clear sense of how Reclaim Valley cemetery relates the placement and erosion of soil to the physical form of the land.

1861 Bayonne Township was established.

1920 Standard Oil in Bayonne dubbed one of largest oil refinery operations in the World.

2012 Hurricane Sandy devastates Bayonne, causing massive floods and power outages.

21

Urban and ecological site analysis revealed global and regional scale issues related to climate change, resilience, sustainability and social equity.

URBAN AND ECOLOGICAL CONTEXT Analysis of Bayonne and Surrounding Areas

*Made In collaboration with Mouli Luo

22

The data analysis of existing conditions as well as cultural and demographic data informed design decisions related to potential habitat types. This information was used to maximiz e specific ecological characteristics.

SYNTHESIS Potential Benefits of Constructing a Proposed Island

*Made In collaboration with Giovanni Caputo

23

The final design supports several target ecosystems with silty clay mud sediments to shorelines and shallow, transitional grasslands and a maritime forest all while protecting Bayonne's coast.

SITE PLAN: LINKS ISLAND A Link to the Urban Ecological Components of Bayonne

24

Resilient ecological systems are achieved through the creation of wet and upland habitats. Protection is achieved through double tiered living breakwaters, revetments and bulkhead hybrids and topographic and vegetation shifts.
