1: History of The Future Laboratory

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

‘Sapere Aude’ Dare to know Fifteen years ago, this short phrase lay at the heart of what drove Martin Raymond and Chris Sanderson to found The Future Laboratory. Back then, in 2001, we were two people with a dog – and a deep desire to spot those unevenly distributed clues to the future, and to use them to help our handful of clients to prosper in the years to come. Our clear, simple, strategic – and we like to think – unique approach to identifying and mapping the trends that have shaped our times and our world has given us a vital edge in a ferociously competitive field. And now there are more than 80 of us – and, of course, a dog – with an extensive global client list that reads like a who’s who of the innovative and influential brands of our age. The business has three clear areas of expertise: : Trend forecasting : Consumer insight : Strategic innovation

All content that leaves the building is subbed and artworked by our production team, ensuring that everything is fact-checked, effective and in line with our brand guidelines and delivered to the highest possible standards. Business Development We aim to create partnerships with our clients, and we do this by being inquisitive about their business objectives such as their priorities, goals and frustrations, while focusing on understanding the implications of these and the gains they stand to make if they can achieve these objectives. Once this is understood, we work with the teams across The Future Laboratory to build tailored solutions and services that exceed expectations in future-proofing our clients’ businesses. Operations Our office lives run smoothly because our in-house IT team, caretaker and dedicated Front of House staff are always on-site to keep our technological and logistical show on the road, and to present our best face to the world. Our office manager oversees the day-to-day running of the building, and our people manager hires talented people like you who ensure our future success, arranges the learning and development you need to progress in your career, and handles any everyday people issues that arise. Last, but not least, our finance team is at the core of the business, keeping track of all financial aspects of The Future Laboratory.

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

The Future Laboratory’s home at Elder Street has its own story to tell. The Grade II-listed property is built on the site of a Roman cemetery and in the precincts of the mediaeval Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital.

History Our 10,000 square feet of internal and external working space sits in the heart of the Elder Street Conservation Area, an Area of Archaeological Importance, and a Scheduled Ancient Monument area. These days the street outside is a mixed bag of small businesses and residential properties. And things haven’t changed much since the road was built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Back then, these tall town houses were popular as adaptable buildings that could serve equally well as homes, shops, or even small industrial spaces. Our winding staircase suggests a colourful past as a multiple-occupancy residence and combined workshop. Nos. 24 to 26 were built around 1722 and No. 28 followed in 1725. In 1723, No. 24 was mortgaged to a dyer, Jon Ham. The first occupant of No. 28 was a silk thrower, one of the most common trades in the area at the time.

STAFF HANDBOOK

By 1763, a worsted stuff weaver, a weaver of a particular type of yarn, lived in No. 24, and by 1857, it was a cow keeper called Mrs Kivor Thomas. In the late 1800s, famed philanthropist Charles Booth put our building on the map. He studied levels of deprivation in East London and created a Poverty Map, classifying streets according to seven colours, depending on their level of wealth. Black stood for ‘lowest class, vicious, semi-criminal’. Yellow was for ‘upper class, wealthy’. You might be relieved to know that Elder Street came out near the top, as one of the red, ‘well-to-do’ locations. In the post-war period, Nos. 24 and 26 were revamped and a large workshop and warehouse were built at the rear. More recently, it has been used as a workshop and yard for hauliers and light industry.

16 : 17

Our garden is tended by The Spitalfield Gardener, Nigel Marlow. The outside spaces are there for you to enjoy – to hold informal meetings, eat lunch or just to take time away from your desk and clear your head.

The Scaffold Garden Our scaffold garden is hard to miss. It’s that wall of vivid greenness in the courtyard, home to a variety of vegetables that we all get a chance to eat, and to a host of plants specially chosen to attract wildlife such as bees, butterflies and birds. With the help of Campaign Design, garden designer Stephen Woodhams and garden construction specialists Morgan & Neal, the team has created The Future Laboratory’s own living sculpture. THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

Among the greenery, you can find a range of herbs, such as coriander, thyme, mint, Moroccan mint, dill, parsley, basil and chives, and a selection of vegetables, including potatoes, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, aubergine, lettuce, leeks, courgettes, cucumbers, radishes and French beans.

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

You will soon notice that one of our most beloved team members is furry, with four legs and a wet nose. Meet Marlowe – our very own Future Lab.

MEET MARLOWE

Playing

He’s a happy fellow, but like most young dogs, he can be prone to enthusiasm overload. So we need your help to teach him to grow up, to be a credit to polite society – just like you. Here are our Future Lab guidelines.

Marlowe loves playing games and a quick round of fetch is an excellent way for both him and you to let off some steam. Either Martin or Chris would be happy to show you the games Marlowe knows and loves playing in the yard.

Saying hello Never move to pet Marlowe by patting him on his head. Approach him with an open palm, let him nose your hand if he wishes and then stroke or tickle him under his jaw. Marlowe loves having his tummy scratched and will often roll over to let you do this. Never let him play or soft bite you – if he tries to do this, even playfully, disengage and turn away – this reinforces the fact that this behaviour is not tolerated. Feeding Please do not feed Marlowe your lunch leftovers or tidbits from your meal. This will encourage him to beg persistently which becomes uncomfortable for us all.

STAFF HANDBOOK

Walking We all need to stretch our legs and Marlowe loves to get out and about on an unexpected trip to the local park or just around Spitalfields. Please make sure you are dog savvy before taking him out and be (well) prepared to clean up after him if he goes for a pooh – not for the squeamish... If you are not sure how to behave around a dog or are uncomfortable around him, please do let the Ops team know so that they can help you out.

3: Company Culture

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

The Future Laboratory is very much a family business in its ethos. We have become the business we are today because of the values we not only cherish but try to live by on a daily basis. These qualities form the platform from which the company derives its structure, its structure and as a result its success. what makes us special Our ongoing aim is to create an organisation that not only looks to the future for our clients, but looks to your own future as well. Without you, the team that makes up The Future Laboratory, we wouldn’t exist. Like any business, making a profit is crucial, but we also recognise the importance of soft skills. Above all, we value experience, thoughtfulness and attention to detail, which influences the way we: : Conduct our business : Engage with our clients : Present our work : Treat each other

HOW WE WORK

Our vision and approach is to merge, combine and collaborate: : Combining the qualitative and quantitative : Including the visual and factual : Engaging the intuitive and expert

The foundation of our work is a unique qualitative methodology that we call Cultural Triangulation. It’s a simple and effective three-pronged process that enables us to work out where clients are now, so that they – and we – can map out their journey into the future.

We are a social bunch, and we like to play as hard as we work.

SOCIAL Every Friday night you’ll find a beer or a glass of wine waiting for you in the canteen so that you can kick back and unwind with your colleagues.

Each department will host a Friday night drinks through the summer – and get a chance to show off their summer cocktail-making skills.

Quarterly Eat Togethers are part of our cultural DNA too. Each team takes a turn cooking a themed meal for the rest of the company. And you’ll hear a lot about ComCo – our company conference that takes place every November to mark the month that the business was launched. ComCo is an opportunity for all of us to take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re going – and to raise a toast to our shared successes. But be warned, ComCo has been known to end in karaoke. In the summer (late June until late September) Friday office hours are 9:30am to 4:30pm. We want you to enjoy the summer months, pack up your things and come down to The Yard for some drinks with the team.

Your wellbeing matters to us.

Wellbeing

Eating at Desks

Your wellbeing matters to us. The last thing we want is to see you sitting at your desk for eight hours a day.

We don’t do desk dining at The Lab. A rushed sandwich in front of your computer is a complete no-no. Elder Street is surrounded by great parks and restaurants, and we have a large canteen, garden and roof garden.

Get out and about, take a walk, catch a local exhibition, do a bit of shopping – anything that keeps you stimulated, happy and bubbling with creativity and with a mindful working attitude. That’s how we know we’ll get the best out of you. To give you some extra inspiration, we run on-site yoga and exercise classes, and offer discounted gym membership and the chance to volunteer for a charity of your choice.

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

So make the most of them by taking regular screen breaks and by always taking a full hour for lunch.

Creativity and innovation are at the heart of what we do – and we like being a company of individuals.

Dress Code

Key

Creativity and innovation are at the heart of what we do – and we like being a company of individuals. So, we don’t impose a strict dress code for day-to-day work in and around the office.

You’ll get your own key to the building from our caretaker on your first day. Please take good care of it. They’re expensive to replace. And please remember to take it with you every time you leave the building so Front of House don’t need to leave their desks to let you in.

But we do offer our clients a premium experience and service – and we need a team that reflects that. So we ask you to try to look as considered and well put together as a piece of our client work or one of our presentations. : All clothing must be freshly laundered, not creased or covered in stains : All clothing must be of decent quality, not riddled with rips and tears : Be prepared to take the lead from your manager on appropriate dress, for example, if you are attending a client meeting

STAFF HANDBOOK

The building will be opened every morning by the caretaker and secured every evening by CMS Keyholding. Your manager has an alarm fob and bolt key that you can borrow if you require entry into the building outside of opening hours. If you need to stay later than 9:00pm please let the office manager know before 2:00pm that day so that we can arrange for security to arrive at a later time.

36 : 37

Buddy System You will be paired with a buddy within your team during your first few weeks with us. He or she will be an experienced team member who will, gently and informally, introduce you to the culture of your team, and of The Future Laboratory as a whole, and help you feel settled and welcome. IT Induction You will receive an IT induction on your first day. If you have any IT queries please email: helpdesk@thefuturelaboratory. com, or, better still, refer to the IT Wiki that contains useful guides and FAQs. You can access all of the wikis by visiting: wiki.thefuturelaboratory.com. Bikes We have plenty of space for bikes in the entrance to The Yard. Please always bring your bikes through the Alice Door, never through the main door of No. 26. Showers The Yard toilet block contains shower facilities. The Future Laboratory provides you with Kit products and towels.

Canteen The Canteen kitchen is kitted out to professional specifications and we encourage you to use it to cook your meals. We provide a three-minute cycle dishwasher, so please put all of your plates and utensils in it, turn it on when it’s full and place clean items back in the cupboards. Please do not leave any dirty plates, pots and pans in the sink or benches, and dry up anything you have used and put it away. The Canteen is a space for the team as well as for guests of The Future Laboratory, and we expect it to be left in a clean condition at all times. Tea Points Each floor has a tea point that is stocked with tea, Allpress coffee and milk. Please put all dirty spoons and mugs or glasses in the grey tray provided or in the dishwasher. The Front of House team will replenish the tea points every day.

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

We want a visit to The Future Laboratory to be an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons.

Front of House and Visitors We have a set way of treating our guests from the moment Front of House greets them at the Alice Door to the second that they leave. Here’s how it works: : Greet guests at the door by their names : Take them on a tour of the scaffold garden : Seat them in our Waiting Room where they will have their senses stimulated by our soundscape, a unique scent of The Future Laboratory, developed by Aesop, and screenings of our latest visual work : Ensure that the most senior member of your meeting greets your guest in the Waiting Room in a timely manner : Deliver a consistently high standard of catering for your meeting, whether you require just tea and coffee or a full lunch set-up : Always show guests out through the main door, not the Alice Door

STAFF HANDBOOK

Meeting Rooms

Sustainability

We have three meeting rooms for our clients: the Board Room, the Quiet Room and Ground Floor 28. These can be booked via Outlook, a process that will be covered during your IT induction.

As a responsible company, it is important that we dispose of our waste properly, which means recycling as much as we can. You’ll notice recycling bins in each office, and separate bins at each tea point for food waste. Please make appropriate use of these.

Our meeting rooms are very popular so please ensure that you always book a room well in advance. If you have a meeting with an external client, Front of House can provide teas and coffees, breakfast, morning and afternoon tea, lunch and drinks. Please contact the Front of House team for more information on food that can be provided for client meetings and workshops. We also have our Workshop area, which seats up to 50 people for workshops and presentations.

THE : FUTURE : LABORATORY

Bees The Future Laboratory is home to more than 60,000 lively honeybees. We keep our beehives on our roof garden, and a diverse variety of plants and flowers up there provide the pollen they need to produce honey with a colour and taste that is unique to the year. Martin Farrington, our head of IT, is our in-house beekeeper – and he may seek your help during swarming season.

First Aid

Smoking

Should you have a work-related accident or injury, please ensure that you report it to a firstaider immediately. We have two qualified first-aiders in the building:

The office is a no-smoking zone. If you want to smoke during office hours please do so away from Elder Street. Please ensure you do not smoke on Elder Street.

Alena Joyette, LS:N Global Sales Natalie Taumberger, Operations Please remember that first-aiders are not doctors. They are trained, but only to provide first-line support in case of a work-related injury.

Mobiles Please do not make personal mobile phone calls in front of the building or anywhere on Elder Street, as it disturbs our neighbours and the peaceful atmosphere of this historic street. Sick Leave If you’re feeling too unwell to come to work, please let your manager and reception know via email or text message. The company will provide full pay for up to 10 days of sick leave. After that, you will qualify for Statutory Sick Pay only. How to Book Holidays

Fire Wardens Every floor has trained fire wardens who know how to evacuate the building safely in case of an emergency. Please listen to any team member who is wearing a high-visibility vest, and leave the building immediately.

To book a holiday, please send an email to your line manager with the dates you require for approval. Once they have approved your request, create a calendar invite for the days you’ll be off and send it to your manager, to Deb, our people manager, and to reception so that it can be recorded.

The meeting point is at the barrier of Elder Street to the left of the building.

The dates vary every Christmas and we will confirm them about halfway through the year. How do I enter the office before/after hours? If you need to enter the building outside of these hours, your manager can provide you with a security fob to switch off the alarm. Can we take off cuts from the garden? All of the herbs, fruits and vegetables are there for you to enjoy. If you do want to take a flower cutting, make sure you ask Nigel first so that you don’t damage the plant.
