A blank piece of paper lies untouched on top of a desk. Everyday people walk by, but are unaware of its presence; blind to its potential. In the distance, a child sits on a rock in the middle of a gently flowing river. Tossing a stick in the water, he watches as it dances downstream; becoming a part of the river. Years pass when the child, now a man, arrives. He glances down at the blank page and visions begin to flood his mind. Grabbing the sheet of paper in his hand, the man travels back to the river, returning to the very rock he sat on as a child, and begins to draw. Every line, every stroke of his pen is guided by the potential he envisions. The blank page provides the catalyst for releasing all his past memories. Hours go by until suddenly, the man stops. Satisfied he holds the paper up to view. On the page is a drawing of a structure, modest in its appearance and passive to the power of the landscape. A place that lends its self to its surroundings. This is the essence of Architecture.

Design is an invitation. An invitation to explore areas of the world that do not exist. To see the unseen. And so, with design, comes a special level of awareness, An ability to find inspiration through the synthesis of past experiences, present surroundings, and future possibilities.

ARTIST RESIDENCE TOWER ABSTRACT: The Artist Residence Tower [A.R.T.] is a community based design aimed towards providing affordable housing for new and upcoming artists. CAUSE: Austin, Texas’ unique mixture of cultures creates an ideal scene for artists to begin their careers. Unfortunately, living within close proximity to the major retail locations is very costly. As a response, the Austin A.R.T. aims to create a self-sustaining, internal economy that will serve as a marketing platform and living space for the beginning artists. SOLUTION: The design of the Austin A.R.T. acts as a beacon for the artists’ work. Its expressive design represents the artwork that is created from within, providing a landmark that will attract pedestrians from both near and far. The increased attraction creates an internal revenue flow in which beginning artist’s will be able to live, sell, and advertise their work in a low cost manner.

The undulating tower allows for optimal exposure to natural light within the artists’ studio spaces, and was dictated by the necessity of light per programmatic use.

By varying the sizes and heights of the windows, every pedestrian will experience the building differently, thus creating a unique interaction between the public and the artist.

An atrium was added to introduce natural light and provide passive ventilation throughout the parking structure.

The atrium also allows for the expressiveness of the undulating residential units to be viewed from within the structure, creating a desire that will encourage vertical circulation throughout the building.

TESLA MOTORS RESORT ABSTRACT: The Tesla Motors Resort, located within the mountains of Hickory, North Carolina, reflects the spirit of Tesla by combining the beauty of nature with the luxury that is expected with the Tesla Motors brand. CAUSE: Founded in 2003, the Tesla Motors company is a corporation dedicated to the progressive study and fabrication of electric powered vehicles in an attempt “help lessen global dependence on petroleum-based transportation and drive down the cost of electric vehicles.1 SOLUTION: The Tesla Motors Resort challenges the traditional car dealership experience by offering potential owners an opportunity to experience their electric vehicles within the context of the natural environment. Each element throughout the resort creates an interaction with the natural surroundings, thus providing future owners with a greater understanding of the necessity of electric powered vehicles. 1. www.teslamotors.com/about

B Y W A T E R COMMUNITY CENTER ABSTRACT: Music is a universal language regardless of race, creed, sex, or social status. It transcends time and has always been a driving force in bringing people together. For the district of Bywater, located just minutes away from downtown New Orleans, Louisiana, bringing people together became a desired remedy. CAUSE: Due to the destruction of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the economic struggles that followed, the once thriving district became an area filled with blight and social separation. In the years following the storm, residents and companies began to return slowly back to the community. However, so did a distinct disconnect due to financial instability. SOLUTION: Influenced by jazz, The Bywater Community Center aims to provide a common gathering space for the community, thus offering a solution to the separation and beginning the gradual steps towards restoration. a collaborative effort with interior design student Jun Fang

Octave = Vertical Grid

A series of steps and half steps between matching notes (D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C#, D).

Meter = Horizontal Grid

All rhythmic aspects that define the timing.

Chord Progression

A series of note configurations that establish an overall tonal structure or melody.

Chord Tones

Notes (usually played on the downbeat) that coincide with their respective chord progressions, allowing bebop musicians to improvise without straying too far from the melody.

Grace Notes

Improvised notes that do not follow the typical melodic structure of the musical piece, giving bebop the distinct “skat” sound.

Phrase = Conceptual Composition

A group of measures that have a formal structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO L I B R A R Y E X T E N S I O N ABSTRACT: The University of Chicago’s Joseph Regenstein Library Extension captures the character of the existing building while celebrating the new techniques of building construction and library technology.

SOLUTION: The proposed language of the Joseph Regenstein Library Extension mimics its partnering building in scale and style. In contrast, a portion of the book retrieval system is raised above ground and encased in glass. This highlights the elaborate system for viewing within the library, and to passing pedestrians.

CAUSE: Currently, the University of Chicago’s Joseph Regenstein Library houses one of the world’s most extensive book collections and an elaborate retrieval system. Comprising of over two million volumes, this retrieval system can deliver a book to a student in no less than five minutes. Unfortunately, this impressive feat of engineering is stored entirely underground.
