ABOUT ANU

Design, according to the AnantU philosophy, is a solution to humanity’s problems. It emphasises the role of the heart, mind, and hand as representations of attitude, knowledge, and skills in achieving an elegant and long-term solution.

Heart:

This is expressed in activities, programmes, and initiatives connected to sustainability, climate change, poverty reduction, heritage conservation, rural livelihoods, and other challenges that make us human.

Head:

This reflects a strong commitment to the cognitive aspect of design, as evidenced by broad theoretical inputs delivered through seminar courses and an interdisciplinary approach to design education.

Hand:

This reflects actions that we do with our hands and emphasises the importance of getting our hands dirty in order to learn and grow. It’s evident in Makerspace activities, studio-based courses, and the institution’s learning-by-doing ethos.

ABOUT SPACE DESIGN

Interior design is the planning and creation of manmade places, and it is closely tied to architecture. Although the urge to create a pleasant environment dates back to the dawn of humanity, interior design is a relatively young subject.

This research-led studio-based practical design course aims to develop space designers as critical thinkers, compassionate humans, and imaginative makers/doers. It offers a variety of courses to assist designers in providing simple, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solutions to space design issues.

The designers also address issues related to physical and mental health. The programme improves students’ capacity to connect the dots, think holistically, and design simple, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solutions to Space Design challenges.

SELF

A pencil, a box of crayons, and a sketchbook, never left my backpack when I was a kid. I used to be this curious child back then, who literally remembered things by their colour. Growing up, I was introduced to new ways of expressing my imaginations.

I believe that designing spaces is no less than having a magic wand in hand. With this creativity and an observing eye, I can literally change the whole style of living. A space is never complete without a user. And it is the user experience that creates a space. My curious mind keeps telling me that there is still so much to explore and learn. This is a never-ending journey of joy.

Water in Built Spaces - Spa Space Design | Anant National University 25

ABSTRACT

The dissertation project is about a notion that people carry, water being aesthetic when brought into interior spaces. This dissertation brings to light that water has much more to offer in terms of interior design. “ The blue minds” is a book that many scientists have contributed to. This book contains extensive study on water, including how it promotes mental wellbeing, alleviates stress and anxiety, helps in visual stimulation, and demonstrates how the sound of water stimulates our minds to think creatively and calms one’s mind with it’s soothing and periodical patterns.

This dessertation takes the opportunity to thoroughly research each prospect before designing a space with such elements. There was an ample amount of time-frame spent on considering the setting of the final design that was to be created. The main idea was to improve areas that currently promote human wellness with water’s beneficial effects. It would be a further asset to the organization’s original goal. Finally, the idea was to implement the design in a variety of places, including health clubs, wellness centres, recreation centres, and more.

Ultimately, the capstone project lead to designing a spa since it would allow one to experiment with new styles and would also be beneficial for future work. One had to build everything from scratch, which was fascinating and intriguing.

PROJECT BRIEF Research question

What role does water play in providing psychological and visual benefits to humans when it is included as an element in interior parameters?

Aim:

To study the various attributes of water and its healing impact on humans when it is brought into built spaces.

Methodology:

- To embrace the characteristics of water, specific parameters will be utilized to incorporate the fluid in both tangible and intangible aspects.

Articles and earlier research on water’s attributes will be useful in this study.

- This study will be user centric, surveys through a questionnaire will be conducted on customers who pay a visit to spas.

Objective:

- To study the attributes of water. Intangible healing capacity of water on human psyche.

Visual qualities of water and how it is brought to interiors.

- To analyze the static and dynamic water in interior spaces, and what difference it makes.

To study types of systems that are available in the interiors that engages with water.

Since, being around water has many benefits, it will be added as a core feature in a spa which will eventually enhance the experience of the customers.

Carry out case studies that are related to similar idea and experiences. Implement the strategies and ideas to the final design through various parameters.

Scope and Limitations:

Achieving a space that is providing a unique experience to the customers by adding water as a prime element.

- This study will include designing a basic detailing but not technical detailing of a spa.

WHY WATER?

Water has been used in interiors for its aesthetic appeal in the form of water elements such as fountains, artificial cascades, water columns, water curtains, sprinklers, and so on for a long time.

Water, on the other hand, has a lot more to offer. It has tangible as well as intangible repercussions on the human psyche. The beneficial attributes of water are numerous.

When introduced to an interior space, it improves the aesthetic and psychological quality with its presence.

ATTRIBUTES OF WATER

1. Effect on human psyche:

Water is an intangible medicine that lowers tension and anxiety.

A yearly conference called Blue Mind is hosted by Wallace J. Nichols, PhD, a marine scientist and ocean conservation researcher.

Blue Mind is a group of researchers that want to learn more about how water affects the human mind. They look into the calming effects of nature on people’s minds. Water enhances nature’s calming and healing properties.

“The brain sees water as a natural habitat with a high degree of predictability, unlike a busy street that is continually changing and puts the brain on edge, which produces stress,” says Michael Merzenich, PhD, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco. Water has a relaxing beat that is predictable.”

Even a minor disturbance in the water, such as a wave, causes the brain to react to the unexpected, resulting in a pleasant rush of dopamine. Blue Mind, a state of mind that lowers blood lactate levels and elevates mood, is characterized by this involuntary attention.

2. Improving air quality:

Negative ions are released when the water in your indoor water features evaporates. Negative ions help to purify the air, making it more pleasant to breathe. Clean air also allows you to think more clearly and focus more effectively.

A falling droplet of water is enveloped by the airstream in this illustration. The droplet attracts aerosol particles (yellow).

Coagulation is a natural phenomenon that attracts droplets and aerosols, clearing the air of contaminants such as soot, sulphates, and organic particles.

3. Visual Stimulation:

The visual stimulation produced by water is relaxing. A calm sanctuary can be created in your room or space with an indoor waterfall or fountain.

An indoor waterfall or water feature will add natural beauty to your room with its beautiful and tranquil appearance.

4. Sound Stimulation:

Blue mind - The sound of water can cause a flood of neurochemicals to be released, promoting wellbeing, increasing blood flow to the brain and heart, and inducing calm.

A synthesis of health benefits of natural sounds

In research exploring the effects of exposure to natural sounds, health and positive emotional outcomes improved, while stress and annoyance decreased. It was discovered that water sounds had the biggest mean effect size for health and positive affect outcomes of the three types of natural sounds (birds, water, and mixed).

PLACES WHERE PEOPLE GO FOR RELAXATION AND CONTEMPLATION:

Therapy centre

A counseling center can consist of one counselor in private practice or multiple counselors involved in the same practice. It assists the members of the community by offering mental health services to those who want to lead better lives.

A place where people meet to learn about meditation and practice it. At a center, a person may take formal classes, listen to lectures and engage with a community of others who share an interest in meditation.0

Recreational centre

A place for recreational activities usually administered by a municipal government agency. Swimming, basketball, weightlifting, volleyball and kids' play areas are very common.

Meditation centre Yoga centre Wellness centre

A yoga studio is a room, building or other place where yoga classes and instruction take place. It can be as simple as a single room or as complex as a structure with multiple classrooms with built in props and heated humidified rooms for Hot yoga.

Spiritual centreSpa and Sauna

A spa is a location where mineral rich spring water (and sometimes seawater) is used to give medicinal baths. Spa towns or spa resorts (including hot springs resorts) typically offer various health treatments, which are also known as balneotherapy.

Your spiritual center is a mystical place within yourself where you achieve mental, physical and emotional peace, even if it is only for a short period of time. During yoga and meditation, you are often told to “ground and center” yourself.

A wellness center is an establishment that offers health services for the body and mind. Wellness centers usually offer skin care services and body services such as fitness, personal training and nutrition consulting.

2. Herbal body wrap:

Linen or muslin sheets are heated and soaked in a machine in which herbal pouches or oils have been placed. The body is then covered with towels or rubber sheets, followed by the linen or muslin sheet..

3. Full Body Massage:

These range from the basic Swedish massage to sports, deep tissue, Shiatsu, aromatherapy, and reflexology massages. They are booked for half an hour or a full hour.

4. Full body mud mask:

Mud is warmed, applied thickly, and the body wrapped in plastic or foil for 20 to 30 minutes. A full treatment takes 60 minutes. Fifteen minutes should be allowed between clients for cleanup and retail selling.

5. Paraffin body wrap:

Paraffin wraps generate heat that helps the body perspire, thereby allowing moisture and previously applied nutrients to be absorbed from the skin surface into the body. The paraffin may be used alone or in conjunction with mud or seaweed.

6. Stone massage:

The stone massage is a form of alternative medicine massage therapy and bodywork involving the placement of a number of either heated or cooled stones to the body for the purpose of pain relief, relaxation and therapy.

IDEATION SKETCHES :

SUSPENDED LIGHTING FIXTURE

This suspended lighting fixture has a transparent container holding water. Light source is at a distance above it. When light falls on the finished floor it get obstructed by the water and creates moving patterns on the floor, which is also known as caustic effect.

REVOLVING SHOE RACK

This revolving shoe rack is made with rotating disks that are stacked and each disk is divided into four compartments. These compartments act as storage for the customer’s footwear and in each storage unit there will be a disposable footwear that they can wear.

THREE LEVELED WATERFALL

There is a three leveled waterfall along the staircase going across three floors. Customers experience the giant waterfall, it’s aesthetic quality and sound benefits. It becomes the key element in the whole spa. It wound be one of the main key charms that customers would recall.

WATER-BODY WITH METAL SPHERES

There is a water feature that has water falling from the false ceiling to the floor contained along the periphery. There are copper spheres in three different sizes attached with rods to this feature. The water stream first hits the metal ball and then it hits the water contained in the floor. There are two unique sounds that ring periodically healing and soothing ones conscious.

Water in Built Spaces - Spa Space Design | Anant National University 113

JURY FEEDBACK

A few concerns could be addressed in depth for effective functioning, including:

1) All of the water features in the design, such as the three-leveled cascade and the water channels at the entrance stairs, to mention a few, may have details on how to maintain the water flow and pump the water back.

2) To prevent leakage, the junctions or borders of the water-contained structure should be welltreated.

General Jury Remarks

3) In general, the jury commented on how they noticed a perfect synergy between all of my research and design. And how I extracted useful knowledge from my case studies and creatively used it to my design.

MY JOURNEY

Reflecting closely, I saw that I had made a potential use of my abilities. I can state with confidence that this graduation assignment was among the most challenging I’ve ever attempted. It was a difficult voyage filled with numerous obstacles, so it taught me a great deal. I had a great learning opportunity with this assignment.

This increased my capacity for thought and inspired me to Take a look at countless choices. Every day brought something new. Instructive lesson that made me doubt myself constantly stage, leading to a better comprehension of the project at that different stages.

Started with a design question,

“What role does water play in providing psychological and visual benefits to humans when it is included as an element in interior parameters?”

Ended up making a functional and aesthetic design that would serve the main agenda.
