Cranium Kid The boy of the head
David Byrne & Natalie McGlynn
This is my story...
I was born just a head a head on a bed with a bit of a neck not much of a neck
My face wore a grimace my mother a tear she’d sit at my bedside and curl up my hair
For she never could tell if I was daughter or son I was not even born with as much as a bum
Just a neck, like I said and a head on a bed
My sight and my hearing were unparalleled my tasting and smelling was where I excelled
I’d eat avocados and listen to Bach but that sense they call touch is what I did lack
But some days my toes would itch which was odd for I had not a toe nor a knee, nor a bod
For I was, as I said Just a head on a bed
Down in the valley the rumours were rife of a skull with no body not much of a life
They slandered and scorned me for many a year they’d come to my window from there they would jeer
“What can it be?” said a voice from below “A cranium kid no heart & no soul”
“Just a head” they would say “and a bed where it lay”
My little old noggin would cry every night my parents would try to make things alright
My father would pull the head from my dolly he’d lay it beside me to make me feel jolly
My Mother would sing and dance to the beat but it made me remember that I had no feet
Just a brain I remain Going slowly insane...
What in the world am I meant to do with a head and a neck and a mind full of gloom?
If I had just some stumps I could go out and play and not in this room for my life have to stay
But all I can do is roll bout the place or lie here for hours just me and my face
No-one ever asked me my name, it is Sid but I’ll forever be known as the Cranium Kid
