In addition to replacing the outdated heating system, it is also essential to upgrade the heat distribution network.
With the rise of sustainable energy solutions, heat pumps have become increasingly popular for heating systems. Unlike conventional boilers, which typically operate at relatively high temperatures (60-80°C), heat pumps are more efficient at lower water temperatures, often between 30-50°C. Therefore, optimum coordination between heat generation and thermal transfer is of fundamental importance.
To effectively distribute heat in a home or building with these low-temperature systems, the choice of radiators is critical. Modern low temperature radiators are an efficient way to save energy. They not only allow you to save energy and costs but also create a comfortable indoor climate.
Future-oriented solutions
Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air, ground, or water and transferring it to the interior space via a refrigerant cycle. Because they operate at lower temperatures, the radiators used with them must be capable of emitting sufficient heat at these lower levels. Standard radiators may not be sufficient to provide the desired warmth without increasing the size or the number of radiators significantly.

A common misconception is that aluminium radiators are always better than steel radiators for use in low temperature water systems, such as those connected to heat pumps. Whilst aluminium radiators do heat up and cool down faster due to the material’s high thermal conductivity, steel radiators are often a more suitable choice as they retain heat for longer providing steady, even warmth. Aluminium radiators though do have some advantages. Aluminium radiators are lighter than their steel counterparts resulting lower transportation emissions. This property also makes them easier to handle and install. Aluminium is highly recyclable where up to 95% of the radiator can be recycled. The recycling process also consumes less energy compared to steel, reducing its environmental impact.

Factors to consider when choosing radiators for heat pumps
Size and heat output
When selecting a radiator for a low temperature water system, it’s essential to ensure that the radiator is sized appropriately for the room it’s heating. Radiators may need to be oversized or use an alternative or supporting heat source to compensate for the lower water temperature.
Most radiator outputs are published at ∆T (Delta T) = 50ºC, which is nominally based on the difference between a room temperature of 20ºC and a mean system temperature of 70 ºC (flow 80 ºC, return 60 ºC). With heat pumps and other lower water temperature systems, the lower flow and return temperatures means that this difference reduces. As a result, the output of the radiator will also reduce. In low temperature water systems, radiator outputs tend to be calculated at ΔT (Delta T) = 30⁰C. Using an online heat output calculator or consulting a heating engineer can help in determining the correct size, number and type of radiators for each room.

Well-insulated spaces retain heat longer, meaning the radiators don’t have to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature. Before installing a heat pump system, it’s worth evaluating the insulation of walls, floors, windows, and doors to ensure optimal energy efficiency.
