Zeigler - EZ Artemia

Page 1

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What percent of natural Artemia will it replace? In shrimp production trials, EZ Artemia demonstrated 100% replacement of Artemia and gave better survivals, larger PLs and faster growth. EZ Artemia consistently provides survivals of greater than 70%. How do you feed it? For best results, feed the recommended amount of EZ Artemia every two hours. 1) Shake the jug well, 2) Measure into a beaker, 3) Dilute 1 part EZ Artemia with 10 parts water, 4) Swirl to mix well, and 5) Distribute evenly throughout the tank. Nothing could be EZer! How do feeding rates of EZ Artemia and Artemia compare? 1 kg of EZ Artemia replaces 1 kg of Artemia cysts (80% hatch-out) or the resulting 2-3 kg of wet weight Artemia derived from 1 kg of cysts. EZ Artemia is designed to replicate enriched Artemia and therefore has a superior nutrient profile and fatty acid (HUFA) composition than regular Artemia. How does this product save the hatchery money? EZ Artemia does not require the extra personnel, tanks, pumps, blowers and freezer space associated with Artemia which can add up to $15/kg in additional costs. It also can cut up to 3 days off of the culture cycle, saving several hundred dollars/million PLs produced in cost savings. Finally, unlike Artemia, it is not subject to supply limitations and the associated price instabilities. How can EZ Artemia help with biosecurity in a hatchery? Hatched Artemia is a known vector of many very pathogenic bacteria. Using EZ Artemia reduces the introduction of pathogens into your production tank because it is free of all known shrimp pathogens. VpakTM (Vitality Pak) is included in the formulation to help boost immune response and resist disease. Anti-microbial probiotics are included to inhibit pathogens. Does this product need any special storage such as with Artemia? EZ Artemia has a shelf life of up to 2 years if kept in a cool location (22° C/77° F). It can be refrigerated, but not frozen. Open containers can be used up to 6 weeks.

Zeigler Tradition Setting aside their orchestra careers touring as The Scotch Highlanders, two brothers, Ty and LeRoy Zeigler, moved their young families to rural Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where they had just purchased a farm and a water-powered grist feed mill. The year was 1935.

Micro-capsulated Liquid Larval Diet

A Proven Alternative to Natural Artemia

Circa 1950’s.

The first feeds were manufactured under the Conewago brand, named after the stream which powered their newly purchased mill. Their strong orientation to value, integrity and customer service was soon rewarded by the trust and business of many local farmers. In 1967, the leadership passed to LeRoy’s son, Dr. Tom Zeigler, who transitioned the company from a manufacturer of farm feeds to an internationally recognized producer of specialized animal feeds. Beginning in the 1980s, the company began licensing nutritional and manufacturing technologies globally under its Zeigler brand. The Zeigler family tradition continues today, more than 75 years later, under the leadership of Tom’s sons, Tim and Matt Zeigler. With a renewed spirit toward technology and innovation, the brothers continue to uphold the company traditions of value and integrity, while striving to serve the changing needs of loyal customers.

SUPPLY & DEMAND Worldwide demand for Artemia cysts continues to rise to levels which could exceed global supply (see below). In past years, good harvests and adequate inventories have helped Artemia suppliers meet market demands. Today, as global demand increases, the combination of depleted inventories and unpredictable harvests could result in supply shortfalls much sooner than anticipated. It is important that the industry understands Artemia’s limitations and continues to focus its efforts to reduce the risks and costs of excessive reliance on this natural resource. Developing practical and cost-effective alternatives to Artemia will clearly help aquaculture become a more sustainable means to feed our planet.

EZ ARTEMIA: A PROVEN ALTERNATIVE EZ ARTEMIA EZ Artemia is a liquid micro-capsulated diet formulated to mimic the nutritional value of enriched Artemia. Unlike live Artemia, which is subject to nutrient variability, EZ Artemia provides a consistent nutrient composition that is completely biosecure. With EZ Artemia, there is no extra preparation or cost involved from wild cysts…it is ready to feed right from the jug!

PRODUCT COMMENTS Artemia nutrition varies based on the strain, harvest, and life stage. Artemia is a known vector for disease. EZ Artemia is pathogen free and biosecure. Field tests have demonstrated higher survivals with EZ Artemia.

Enriched

EZ Artemia is formulated to match the nutrient profile of very high quality or enriched Artemia. EZ Artemia does not require hatching and can reduce costs approximately $15/kg before the expense of cysts and enrichment. EZ Artemia is practically neutrally buoyant. VpakTM (Vitality Pak) enhances immune response and helps animals resist disease. EZ Artemia contains enzymes and probiotics to enhance digestion and improve water quality and animal health. EZ Artemia maintains water quality, and unlike Artemia, reduces oxygen demand during PL transport. EZ Artemia can be fed from Zoea 1 to PL harvest; a smaller size particle size can be entirely consumed by filter feeders. Due to heavy reliance on natural Artemia, it has become the recognized standard within the industry. World demand is exceeding the natural supply of Artemia impacting both pricing and availability.
