Mission

“Building value to life through innovative nutrition”

We strive to build our business around a strategy of innovative nutrition. Foods that provide for proper nutrition help to bring value to life for both man and animals. Through our involvement in the biomedical community, we work to develop diets aimed at assisting in the resolution of human illness and disease. Our pet and zoo line of products are directed toward improving nutrition for some of the world’s most precious wildlife, and the diets we develop for use in aquaculture help to provide an assortment of healthy, nutritious seafood for human consumption. Our team is committed to serving your nutritional needs. Quality is of utmost importance to us, whether it be through the value of a product or the integrity of a relationship. We understand that our success depends, not only on the performance of our products, but more importantly, on the strength of relationships established with our customers and suppliers. We look forward to being part of your success and welcome all opportunities to improve.

Sincerely,

Thomas R. Zeigler, Ph.D. Chairman of the Board

Nutrition and Formulation

FixedFormulations Know What’s in your Diet!

It is recognized that nutrition is the most important environmental factor influencing the ability of laboratory animals to reach their genetic potential for growth, reproduction, longevity, and to respond to environmental stress. Therefore, it is essential for research scientists, veterinarians, and animal facility managers to have detailed dietary information in order to make valid conclusions regarding experimental results. Zeigler provides lab diets which are comprised of fixed formulations, where ingredient compositions remain constant and are not altered to accommodate the use of lower quality or less costly raw materials. Fixed formulations help decrease the risk of non-assayed or undesirable constituents which could influence

experimental results or jeopardize the well being of animals. Nutrient concentrations in Zeigler lab diets are controlled by procurement of ingredients that contain acceptable specified nutrient concentrations and meet Zeigler’s specified quality standards. Zeigler supports the fixed formula diet concept because it is important for scientists to know and have control of the nutrient and contaminant concentrations of diets used in biomedical research. In addition to specified nutrient and contaminant assays, the researcher is offered the option of complete formula disclosure to help monitor and control ingredient inputs on every lot of diet. With this information, the scientific community can have the highest level of confidence in producing sound experimental results.

Rodent Diets

General Information

Zeigler provides a series of rabbit diets with differing ingredient and nutrient concentrations to accommodate colonies maintained for the production and use in biomedical research, or other commercial endeavors. Diets also differ in nutrient composition to accommodate rabbits of different genotypes, and for differences in requirements during the life cycle: growth, reproduction, and maintenance.

Rodent Research Quality (RQ) Diets Zeigler Rodent RQ Diets are fixed formula diets that provide those nutrients required for maximum reproductive performance in rat and mouse production and research colonies maintained in conventional environments. Zeigler Rodent RQ diets are “Closed Formula” or proprietary formula diets in that the quantitative ingredient concentrations are not readily available.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Open Formula Diets Zeigler Rodent NIH Open Formula Diets were developed at NIH as standard reference diets for use throughout the biomedical research community. These diets are referred to as “Open Formula” diets because the quantitative ingredient composition is readily available. Zeigler was the first company to make the NIH diets commercially available approximately 35 years ago. Zeigler also manufactures and markets the National Toxicology Program 2000 Diet (NTP-2000), an open formula diet specifically formulated for the bioassay studies conducted for the NTP.

Diets Limited in Phytoestrogen Concentrations The dietary concentrations of phytoestrogens are a concern in various toxicological and biomedical research programs. To accommodate the requirements of these programs, Zeigler nutritionists formulated diets with lower phytoestrogen concentrations. Zeigler modified the NIH diets to minimize the naturally occurring phytoestrogen contributions of soybean meal, soybean oil and alfalfa meal. The resulting formulations are offered to you as the Rodent Phytoestrogen Reduced diets.

Utilization of Rodent Diets Shelf Life:

Zeigler’s all natural ingredient rodent diets are formulated for a shelf life of six months after the date of manufacture, which is consistent with the recommendations in the NIH “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.” Laboratory animal diets should be stored in cool, dry areas where the humidity is low in order to realize maximum shelf life. In addition, feed storage areas should be free of vermin and hazardous materials in order to prevent biological or chemical contaminations.

Sizes:

Zeigler rodent diets are most frequently manufactured in binamic 8 pellets (5/8”-3/4” wide, 3/8”- 7/16” thick, 3/8”1” long). These diets can also be manufactured into pellets of various other sizes, or in meal form, to accommodate specific customer requirements. Utilization of Rodent Diets

Packaging:

Zeigler rodent diets are packaged in 3-ply laminated paper bags of varying weights to accommodate customer requirements.

Feeding Zeigler rodent diets are formulated for ad libitum feeding. Adult rats will consume 15-20 grams of feed per day, while Instructions: adult mice will consume 4-6 grams of feed per day. Clean, fresh water should be available ad libitum.

Rabbit Diets

General Information

Zeigler provides a series of rabbit diets with differing ingredient and nutrient concentrations to accommodate colonies maintained for the production and use in biomedical research, or other commercial endeavors. Diets also differ in nutrient composition to accommodate rabbits of different genotypes, and for differences in requirements during the life cycle: growth, reproduction, and maintenance.

Rabbit Research Quality (RQ) Diets Zeigler Rabbit RQ Diets are fixed formula diets that provide those nutrients required for maximum reproductive performance in rabbit production and research colonies maintained in Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) or conventional environments. Zeigler Rabbit RQ Diets are “closed formula” or proprietary-formula diets in that the quantitative ingredient concentrations in these diets are not readily available.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Open Formula Diets Zeigler Rabbit NIH Open Formula Diets were developed at the NIH as standard reference diets for use throughout the biomedical research community. These diets are referred to as “Open Formula” Diets because the quantitative ingredient composition is readily available. Zeigler was the first company to make the NIH diets commercially available approximately 35 years ago.

Utilization of Rabbit Diets Shelf Life:

Zeigler natural ingredient rabbit diets are formulated for a shelf life of six months after the date of manufacture, which is consistent with the recommendations in the NIH “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.” Laboratory animal diets should be stored in cool, dry areas where the humidity is low in order to realize maximum shelf life. In addition, feed storage areas should be free of vermin and hazardous materials in order to prevent biological or chemical contaminations.

Sizes:

Zeigler rabbit diets are most frequently manufactured in pellets 5/32” in diameter and 5/16”- 5/8” long. These diets can also be manufactured into pellets of various other sizes to accommodate specific customer requirements.

Packaging:

Zeigler rabbit diets are packaged in 3-ply laminated paper bags of varying weights to accommodate customer requirements.

Zeigler rabbit diets can be fed ad libitum. The amount of feed consumed by rabbits will Feeding Instructions: vary according to age, size and reproductive status. For instance, a pregnant rabbit will

consume from 150-200 grams per day and during lactation this may increase to 200-400 grams per day. Limited feeding is acceptable to prevent obesity.

Zeigler Tradition Setting aside their orchestra careers touring as The Scotch Highlanders, two brothers, Ty and LeRoy Zeigler, moved their young families to rural Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where they had just purchased a farm and a water-powered grist feed mill. The year was 1935. The first feeds were manufactured under the Conewago brand, named after the stream which powered their newly purchased mill. Their strong orientation to value, integrity and customer service was soon rewarded by the trust and business of many local farmers. Circa 1950’s.

In 1967, the leadership passed to LeRoy’s son, Dr. Tom Zeigler, who transitioned the company from a manufacturer of farm feeds to an internationally recognized producer of specialized animal feeds. Beginning in the 1980s, the company began licensing nutritional and manufacturing technologies globally under its Zeigler brand. The Zeigler family tradition continues today, more than 75 years later, under the leadership of Tom’s sons, Tim and Matt Zeigler. With a renewed spirit toward technology and innovation, the brothers continue to uphold the company traditions of value and integrity, while striving to serve the changing needs of loyal customers.
