WHAT MOVES & WHAT STANDS STILL?
REFLECTIONS: Performative actions that happen within a space to a certain degree are the main component of the different processes that are constantly changing. The question maybe should be What stands still? rather than What moves?. The invisible layer of this constantly changing dynamics of different ecosystems creates a perfectly balanced environment for living. Fluidity as a notion is explained as the ability of a substance to flow easily, expanding a bit on that notion we can imagine the fluidity as something that is overcoming obstacles, but at the same time being unsettled, unstable, something that is always moving, always changing. The circulation pattern of these processes considering size, rate, nature, substance, sequence, is always there, rearranging and creating a chaotic order. This “chaotic order” gives coherence to actions by imposing its learned order to be implemented into the environment. What moves? Processes of movement create a flux, which can be measured, visualized but above all, can be felt. Every action happens as a part of a force or a condition that is pushing towards that action. The movement of people, cars, water, the wind is all part of physical movement, which are creating formal fluid processes. Invisible movements such as thoughts, senses, emotions, perceptions create a complex network of energy that connects to the network of physical movements. What stands still? should be a much more complex question, because maybe what is standing still in a way is creating the network of what moves. Conditions set by the elements that are remaining in a static state sometimes can be a barrier that is blocking the smooth flow of the processes, and other times is acting as a catalyst to initiate these processes.

There are two different modes of intervention on the ground in an eminently landscape sense: the first consists of decorating it, with the twofold intention of adorning it and making it significative; the second consists instead of delimiting it, orienting it in a particular direction or circumscribing a portion, uncovering of lower layers, addition of new layers and levels of meaning, introduction of material or conceptual boundaries.

Movement unfolds different timelines of stories, operations, performances, emotions, perceptions. Our perception might change constantly as does the space itself. Can architecture be a constant in this repeatedly changing environment? This can be answered just after we understand what is changing for real or is it our perception that is changing its state.Natural forces such as wind, water movement, the motion of people are something that it is affected by a greater force, in which we have no control, over. But, realizing how these forces operate, is the starting point of how and when a counterforce can be used to change their direction. By changing one direction of a particular natural force such as water, the circulation flow of movement of people will additionally change. So by exploring and getting to know the physical properties of one force [ water], we will change the emotional and perception properties of another force [human activity and performance]. In one way or another architecture will shape water and the water will shape the architecture. What is constant, static that is standing still then acts as a catalyst for different processes of circulation to be born, re-directed, and reactivated.
In a fragment of a second you can understand: Things you know, things you don’t know, things you don’t know that you don’t know, conscious, unconscious, things which in a fragrant of a second you can react to: we can all imagine why this capacity was given to us as human beings - I guess to survive. Architecture to me has the same kind of capacity. It takes longer to capture, but the essence to me is the same. I call this atmosphere. When you experience a building and it gets to you. It sticks in your memory and your feelings. I guess thats what I am trying to do. Peter Zumthor
