Self Introduction

My name is Zhuo Zeng, Vermy is my English name. I was borned in Chengdu, China and studying in Melbourne now. I am currently in third yeaar of Environments degree and major in architedture. I love imaginatoin and creating ideas, I’m very interested in model making. The reason why I choose architecuture as my major, because when I was very young, I liked to play lego, the model with plastic construction things are really atrracted my attention. So I started to learn architecture history and read some architecture building books in high school. before I started university, I thought model making is only by hand making, when I got into design studio, I found there was another way to do model, like 3D printing and laser cutting. I learnt some drawing softwares like Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino and Indesign, now we are getting into Grasshopper, How excited! Studio Air is more like digital design, I haven’t got in touch with digital design before, I’m looking forward to explore how digital and computational method could enhance the design project through learning studio Air.

The Beijing National Stadium or better known as the Bird’s Nest Stadium was designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing, China.() the stadium lives up to its aspiration as a global landmark. As the name implies, the stadium looks like a giant bird’s nest made out of 110,000 tons of steel. The infrastructure was also built using advanced energysaving design and environment friendly features such as natural ventilation & lighting, a recycling system for rainwater, use of renewable geothermal energy sources and utilization of photovoltaic power technologies. In a site for mass gatherings, Herzog and de Meuron have carved out psychological space for the individual, and rethought the relationship between the solitary human and the crowd, the everyday and the heroic. ()However the structure attests to China’s nationalistic ambitions, it is also an aesthetic triumph that should cement the nation’s reputation as a place where bold, creative gambles are unfolding every day. Herzog and de Meuron were chosen for the Beijing project partly on the strength of their design for the 2005 Allianz Arena in Munich. Clad in puffy, translucent panels made of a high-tech plastic, that arena’s doughnut-shaped form seems to swell from pressure within.

Viewed from a distance, the contrast between its bent steel columns and its bulging elliptical form gives the stadium a surreal, moody appearance, as if it were straining to contain the forces that are pushing and pulling it this way and that. Philosophically, it suggests the tensions just beneath the surface of a society in constant turmoil.() This vision of the stadium as a gigantic social organism, rather than as a machine for mass hypnosis, is underscored by the architects’ plans for the building’s future. While the architecture of the “Bird’s Nest” appears complex when seen in its entirety, it can be understood quite clearly when broken down into a series of geometric operations. This sort of algorithmic thinking has become increasingly relevant as architects have developed methods of evolutionary simulation and generative design to deal with the increasingly complex demands of their designs. Herzog and de Meuron created an incredibly intricate composition through the aggregation and variation of relatively simple architectural elements.

Absolute Towers is a residential condominium twin tower skyscraper complex in the five tower Absolute City Centre development in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The project was built by Fernbrook Homes and Cityzen Development Group. Dubbed the “Marilyn Monroe” building, due to its sexy curves, Absolute Towers has added a new landmark to the skyline of Mississauga, the fast-growing suburb of Toronto. The architects sought to add to something “naturalistic, delicate and human in contrast to the backdrop of listless, boxy buildings.” the design features smooth, unbroken balconies that wrap each floor of the building. The torsional form of the towers is underpinned with a surprisingly simple and inexpensive structural solution. With Absolute we see the entire building twisting to achieve the organic form, creating a beautiful new landmark for a developing urban area. A sustainable architecture in modern concept. Real sustainability results in a harmonious civilization.

The dynamically fluid shaping of the towers, naturally aerodynamic, adeptly handles wind loading and ensures comfort throughout all the balconies. Besides providing every resident with a nice exterior place to enjoy views of Mississauga, the balconies naturally shade the interior from the summer sun while soaking in the winter sun, reducing air conditioning costs. Throughout the process of urbanization, skyscrapers have been symbols of technological bravado, prime capitals and the societal projections of wealth and prosperity. This limited framework for skyscrapers often results in solutions limited by homogenous, linear structures and degenerative duplication in business districts across the globe. Forced into an unnatural state of conformity, metropolitan life is negatively affected by these unchecked, efficiency-centric development practices. Without a challenge to the status quo, cities will continue to lack the cohesion of life as implied by the term: forest. A forest is a thriving ecosystem wherein every organism survives only in a state of symbiosis. New ambitions nurtured in a changing global consciousness challenge the aging pattern of last century’s development and favor fresh thoughtful, inspiring and eloquent solutions for tomorrow’s high-rises. future high-rise buildings need to catalyze a higher level of complexity in our cities for the sake of harmonious civilization.
