The DOLOMITES – a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site
Dolomitental Villnöss Dolomiti Val di Funes
Natürlich sanfter Urlaub
Villnöss Valley – an Alpine Pearl in the Dolomites, a UNESCO world natural heritage site Alpine Pearls is a rating for extraordinary holiday spots in the Alps. However, it is also a signpost to currently 29 locations that offer more than just a pleasant stay. “Low-impact mobility” are the buzzwords for anyone who wants to combine leisure-time fun with environmental awareness. Here is an overview of the 29 Pearls: Arosa (CH), Bad Reichenhall (D), Berchtesgaden (D), Bled (SLO), Cesarole Reale (I), Chamois (I), Cogne (I), Collepietra (I), Disentis/Mustér (CH), Forni di Sopra (I), Funes (I), Hinterstoder (A), Interlaken (CH), Les Gets (F), Limone Piemonte (I), Mallnitz (A), Moena (I), Neukirchen (A), Nova Levante (I), Nova Ponente (I), Moso in Passiria (I), Pragelato (I), Prolognan (F), Racines (I), Termignon (F), Tires (I), Valdidentro (I), Weissensee (A), Werfenweng (A).

On 26 June 2009 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) added the Dolomites to the list of world natural heritage sites. Their “scenically monumental beauty” and “geological and geomorphological importance” were categorized as unique in the world. Inclusion on the world heritage list is the world’s highest form of recognition for a natural site, a sort of Nobel Prize for natural assets. The best known summits in the Dolomites, such as the Geisler Peaks (3025 m) in the Puez-Geisler nature reserve, the Drei Zinnen (2999 m) in the Drei Zinnen nature reserve, the Schlern (2563 m) in
the Schlern-Rosengarten-Latemar nature reserve, and the Marmolada (3343 m), to mention only the most important, are among the most beautiful mountains in the world. From a geological, botanical and scenic point of view, the Dolomites are unique and thus cannot be compared with any other mountain range in the world. For this reason they are among the 193 most beautiful and valuable landscapes across the globe that have been recognised by UNESCO.

How Alpine Pearls were born ALPINE PEARLS is the result of two interrelated EU projects, which were prompted by an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water, and taken one step further to become a coordinated EU project. The focus of the project is the creation of innovative, sustainable services for tourists, which combine tourist attractions with the advantages of getting around with environmentally friendly means of transport. Our objective over the coming years is to create an attractive and environmentally-friendly transport service made up of small, mobile elements. This concept ensures that our visitors and residents can get around conveniently within our valley, as well as in neighbouring towns.

Teis Mineral Museum
Guided half-day geological hike
The Mineral Museum is housed in the clubhouse (Vereinshaus) in the centre of Teis in the Villnöss Valley. Museum experts have used contemporary educational techniques to create an originally-designed exhibition that feeds the imagination. The exhibition not only contains the famous Teis geodes, but also minerals from other areas within the Alps in which the collector, Paul Fischnaller, goes digging.
Meeting point: 9.00am at the Teis Mineral Museum. Museum visit: An introductory DVD provides a comprehensive overview of how the crystals that are displayed in the museum are created and how they are composed. Approximately 20-minute hike to the excavation site, where you will search for Teis geodes under the expert supervision of Paul Fischnaller. At 12 pm midday, the minibus will bring you back to the Mineral Museum. Tools will be provided by the museum. Duration: approx. 2½ hours
Teis geodes
An introductory film provides the uninitiated visitor with a comprehensive overview of how the crystals that are displayed in the museum are created and how they are composed. The museum shop stocks a wide range of literature on the subject, as well as souvenirs, jewellery and healing stones. The items on display are not for sale, and cannot be swapped. New, interesting findings are always being added to the exhibition by the collector, Paul Fischnaller. Teis geodes can measure up to 20 cm in diameter. Geodes and agate almonds are embedded in their mother rock, a quartz porphyr tufa. Up to seven different minerals can be found in wonderful crystal formations inside the hollow cavity of these „druses“. Amethyst and quartz crystals stand out from the others due to their transparent purity, as does agate, with its almost geometrical coloured rings. Every geode cavity boasts its own little secret crystal garden, which is now on display in the museum.

>> Special Exhibition: “The perfect form” What have footballs and radial-minerals in common? Minerals, like everything in nature, strive for the perfect shape. Through the interplay of many crystals of one or two mineral species the perfect shape is almost achieved. The exhibited minerals (crystal conglomerates in perfect spherical shape and cut geodes), as well as other naturally occurring spherical shapes show vividly and colourfully the most perfect form in the animate and inanimate nature. >> International Museum Day Sunday, 18th May - Open Day from 10am to 12noon and 2pm to 5pm >> Wine-tasting of home-made wines (KUGLKULT project) Wednesday, 16th July at 8pm in the cliff bunker >> Felting balls from sheep’s wool Friday, 8th August at the museum

Puez-Geisler Nature Park House The Puez-Geisler Nature Park House of Villnöss brings visitors closer to nature and is the perfect place to dwell on. A walkable aerial photo gives visitors a bird‘s eye perspective of the Puez-Geisler Nature Park. The exhibition area “Touch the mountains” focuses on the key topic - the geology of the Dolomites. The Puez-Geisler Nature Park has been designated the “Dolomites site office” because it is home to all of the rock types, deposits and weathering that are typically found in the Dolomites. The “Nature’s treasure trove” on the second floor contains plenty to discover: animal fur, bird’s eggs, feathers, footprints, droppings, teeth, antlers, medicinal herbs … all of which - and much more - is on display and can be touched! The “Conquering Mountains” room is primarily dedicated to alpinism. The world’s probably most famous alpinist, Reinhold Messner, comes from Villnöss. He talks about his experiences in the mountains in a short film. The “Puez-Geisler Nature Park film” is also shown daily in the mountain cinema. >> September: Fascination mountaineering in the Dolomites, evening lecture From Pustertal to Feltre, from Kreuzbergpass to the Eisacktal the territory of the “Pale Mountains” has always been an attraction to hikers and climbers. Sometimes the summits stay alone, in some places they form massifs, that provide breathtaking panoramas. All in all, this unique landscape provides us with endless possibilities for wonderful experiences. Erwin Steiner, South Tyrolean mountain and ski guide, talks about this passion.
