About Taste Making Tokyo
Taste Making Tokyo is the 13th annual Pacific Rim collaboration between Tama Art University and ArtCenter College of Design. In this project, we explored how design can drive the future of dining, considering cultural, social and ritual aspects of how we eat, drink and dine. Through a research trip to Nagoya, Kyoto, Nara, Naoshima and Takamatsu, we discovered the depth of Japanese food culture, from traditional rituals to cutting edge design, and explored issues in society today. How does the design of each element—from the utensils to the bowl to the table, lighting & surroundings—influence the dining experience? Pacific Rim aims to offer students a practical and theoretical understanding of global design through cooperation as an international team. In the 2018 project, students from both colleges collaborate on interdisciplinary teams to design new tableware, lighting & dining environments for a global market.
About Taste Making Tokyo

Research & Challenges
The starting point of our project is about transferring the atmosphere of traditional Japan. As this is a very broad and abstract theme, the main challenge for us is the whole transferring process——what images can express the essence of tradition japan? What can we use as the media to tell a story through out the whole wagashi tasting process? We were deeply inspired by the subtleness and mono no aware when we were walking through the bamboo forest in Tenryu-ji .
We start with research of bamboo as a material, traditional bamboo containers such as shishi odoshi(鹿威し)and what bamboo means for Japanese culture. Digging through Japanese ancient literary forms such as waka and haiku, also the ancient mythology Utsuho Monogatari (竹取物語), we eventually developed of our story from an ancient verse “bamboo grows on the glowing ground.” Taking the motifs appearing in the poem —— bamboo, stone, moon and water, we developed the form language of our tablewares.

Tokyo welcomes the country’s (and world’s) first hand-drip green tea cafe, Tokyo Saryo, a modern, modish and minimalist affair tucked away in the sinuous streets of the popular Sangenjaya district.
“ The first cup of tea is 70°C and the 2nd one is 80°C. The color, the flavor and the way you drink it would all be different. ”

As the light glows, you pick up the bamboo cup and smell the scent of traditional Japanese tea with the lower side facing you.
Afterwards, you turn the cup 180 degrees and drin
and drink it from the highter side.
After tasting the tea, you could use the leaf spoon to scroop the honey that you selected to your wagashi and start tasting it.
