Mantiques
No man’s personal retreat – be it in the house or an outbuilding – is complete with objects reflecting its owner’s interests. On a recent stroll round the Market Deeping Antiques & Craft Centre we found plenty of items – antique and retrostyle – to add a touch of personal style to your Man Cave. There’s everything from collectable postage stamps, die-cast and tin-plate model vehicles, to much larger items – and you don’t have to spend a fortune to find some nostalgic gems.
There’s something very tactile about old tools – a reminder of days of hard but satisfying work in the pre-power tools era – and they make great conversation pieces or you could even put them to their original use! For example, there was a splendid old wooden plane for £5, a Victorian paraffin torch priced at £13.50, or an attractive vintage wood block pulley marked up at £15. At the time of our visit, Unit 18 had a special offer where, if you bought three tools, you got the cheapest item at half price.
If you are lucky enough to have your own bar, then you can add a touch of colourful character with these miniature Wade pottery drink barrels priced at from £4 apiece. Cheers!
For some nostalgic reading, these vintage motorcycle magazines from the 1960s are full of fascinating reading with advertisements featuring prices to make your mouth water! There were also individual copies of the Railway Wonders of the World magazine from the 1930s at £2 per issue.
You often read about a revival in the fortunes of vinyl records, but for many this interest has never gone away. There’s a big choice to be found here suiting most musical tastes and price brackets.
If your budget doesn’t stretch to an original horse painting by an old master, then you can create the right effect with a large framed print at £24.
World Cup fever may be over for another four years, but for some good old-fashioned football-related reading how about a nostalgic 1950s-book such as Billy Wright’s Football Album for just £2. If you collect vinyl, a good idea for their storage are these wooden crates featuring a variety of famous record labels. Boxes are available for storing 7-inch singles (£22.50) and 12-inch LPs (£29.50).
Automobilia is another area where there’s a large choice and price range for original and reproduction items. We liked the period Valor paraffin can at £15.
For fans of American comics and Super hero action stories, there’s a huge choice at £5 each. Kapow!
If the household authorities won’t allow bulky bits of railwayana in the house then original framed carriage prints may be the answer? These were displayed in railway carriages of yesterday and there’s a variety of topics available from around £40. This one features Stowmarket Station from an original painting by Leonard Squirrel and carries a £70 price label. Keep your eye out for local examples, which include the old stone bridge at Deeping St James, Crowland, Stamford Town Bridge, plus a quartet of Peterborough studies. We’re not sure if the Tardis effect means you can get more money in a Police money box (£9.50), but it should appeal to Dr Who fans. Likewise a Police box mug at £6.95. There was even a Tardis umbrella priced £15.99!
Military related items are always popular and a Jerry Can at £15 can be either a decorative item or look the part in your Land Rover or Jeep!
