What could be a more winning combination? The fruits of the labour of our local artists’ community and the beautiful interior of the Priory Church! And so it turned out – in spite of the tail end of Storm Babet – many people gathered to admire the work, listen to the music and have refreshments. Michelle of Black Cab Framing and Judy of I’d rather be in Deeping magazine, with display boards provided by Gladwell & Patterson and refreshments and music organised by Jan Fisk, were able to present the sum of £1700 for the upkeep of the Priory Church. Having been brought up with motor sport and in particular drag racing, Jude Gosling-Elliott (!2) was bought a go-kart in need of work. When he felt comfortable he headed to Melbourne raceway, York, and ran the vehicle over the eighth mile. He started in the 16 seconds bracket at 34mph and after several meetings with modifications made to the go-kart, he managed 13.68 at 47 mph. Now the go-kart is undergoing more modifications by Mick Winyard Engineering to go even quicker next season.

Pam’s With best wishes for a Merry Christmas Page and a very Happy New Year Even though we can see it approaching on the calendar, the first week of December always seems to come quicker than we realise. For some of us. this positive energy lifts the spirits and provides the necessary motivation to engage enthusiastically with all the traditional activities. Yet for others this week can
Library – Hurrah, our Planning Application to add extra space to the rear of the building has now been approved. As the Project Lead on this I am delighted to say that we will soon begin the next phase of the development by getting quotes for the work, applying for further National Lottery funding, and then engaging a specialist conservation building firm to undertake the work.
Recycling – Households
still have a couple of months to work out where to position their new ‘purple-lidded’ recycling bins. Although this will not be very convenient for most of us, if the bins are used properly, it will enable the district to recycle considerably more materials and avoid unnecessary waste due to spoilage. Remember - no food, sticky, or dirty stuff in either of the two recycling bins!
Street Lights – As both an energy and a cost-saving measure, the South Kesteven District Council has voted to replace all the current street light bulbs with LED ones. This is quite a large scale project and the environmental benefits of this decision were clearly understood across the Council. The change over will begin as soon as possible..
be rather daunting as it brings a certain amount of challenge at the thought of everything that needs to be done in the next three weeks. Expectations may be unrealistically high, so each one of us deserves to take some personal time to enjoy the seasons festivities without undue pressure.
Supermarkets – We have been reliably advised that the new Aldi supermarket planned for the town centre off Godsey Lane is still expected to make progress. New River Retail company has explained to us that there are still some technical issues that are taking longer than expected to resolve. Also, Lidl are no longer seeking permission on the Towngate site.
Neighbourhood Plan – The first consultation is now underway to review the development Plan for the Deeping area and it is time to have your say. What housing design features do we want to see more of? How can we ensure Deeping develops as a safe, healthy and attractive neighbourhood? Where will new footpaths, cycleways and green spaces go? A survey and more information to follow. Raft Race – Despite concerns over the long-term future of the Deepings Raft Race, there has been an encouraging response to the request for more volunteers. I attended the advertised meeting and there was a good turn out from the community with lots of offers to help, so it looks like the future of the raft race is secured, thanks to the Deepings community spirit.
Leisure Centre – the decision-making process is now at a significant stage. For all updates about progress please visit or join the Facebook group called ‘Saving the Deepings Leisure Centre Reporting a problem - for a highways, footpath, fly-tipping, graffiti issue, go to www.fixmystreet.com 14

Sheltons - Stationer to the Deepings One hundred and fifty years ago a man called Jabez Shelton (1848-1888) was about to prepare for his first Christmas of trading in Market Deeping, having taken over the drapery and leather business that John and Frances Fox had run since 1837 in the shop that is now the Furniture Warehouse. John and Francis had retired to North Walsham where John died in 1878 (he is buried in the churchyard at Market Deeping). The premises Jabez now took over consisted of a large house with a two glazed shop windows, a warehouse, stable and outbuildings and a side gateway at the corner of the Market Place leading to a garden, orchard and field which itself had an entrance from Godsey Lane. Jabez and his wife Mary (née Coaten) had some experience of trading, having owned a drapery and boot business in Northampton after their marriage in 1872. Jabez was a Peterborough baker’s son, Thomas; Mary was the daughter of Oundle couple, Francis and Susanna (née Pole). In order to prepare for the season’s trading, Jabez advertised for an intelligent youth to become an apprentice in his drapery and clothing business. Trade must have been good because in February 1878 Jabez purchased the stationery and printing business from Mrs Wherry’s estate. She had conducted her business from the front room of her house in the Market Place (now Dominos) until her death in November 1877. The position of post master, previously held by Mrs Wherry, also moved to Shelton’s. Again Jabez proved that he was the man for the job. When, in February 1879, Market Deeping became the destination of Edward Weston, the American challenged to walk 2,000 miles in 1,000 hours, the special reporters who were accompanying him telegraphed their reports Kate, Alice, Jessie to London, Manchester and Scotland direct from Market Deeping Post Office in just a little over an hour, some of the messages filling half a column of news! The entourage took refreshments at the New Inn (now the Stage) and proceeded to Peterborough.
Responsibility kept coming Jabez’s way. In 1879 he was appointed Registrar for the Deeping District and in November of that year he was elected to the Proposed Railway Committee (for a railway line to go from Helpston to Market Deeping.) In February 1881, Jabez recommended the extension of privileges at the sub Post Office in Deeping St James under the superintendence of Mr Causdale. Letters could now be registered at the Office, money orders granted and paid and a wall box was erected at Joseph Smith’s house near to Rotten Row (now 27-29 Bridge Street) deemed to be very convenient for Horsegate, Deeping Gate and all in between.
Jabez Shelton in doorway before shop was converted
When the 1881 census was taken, Jabez and Mary were at home with their daughters Alice (6), Mary (4) and Jessie (3). They were employing a domestic servant, Harriet Smith (25) from Dudley. Their eldest daughter, Eleanor (7) was visiting her aunt in Leamington.
As post master, Jabez furthered the Post Office provision by seeing the postal delivery service extended to Frognall, keeping the money order offices in the district to be open till eight o’clock on Saturdays (especially useful for workers) and obtained a midday despatch to London, an improvement on the one at night. continued >

FEATURE His star continued to be in the ascendancy as he expanded the stationery side of the business, printing cards for all occasions, such as mourning cards with black edges, and he sold 50 different Christmas cards at a farthing each. The thriving religious community in the Deepings was catered for with the variety of prayer books, hymn books and bibles that were stocked. Tickets for a variety of events were available to purchase, especially for those in the Assembly Rooms at the White Horse Inn. He was agent for the Lincolnshire Fen Feather Beds that were made in Market Deeping and for the Peterborough Advertiser newspaper. With a thriving business in Market Deeping, Jabez decided to sell his Northampton business for £300 in 1881. By 1884 Jabez was earning £72 pa from the Post Office. In 1886 Frances Fox, landlady of Shelton’s, put the buildings up for sale. The auction was held by John Medcalf at the New Inn. Bidding commenced at £500, Jabez put a bid in for £800 but the reserve was £950 and it wasn’t sold. Eventually the property was sold privately and Mr Shelton moved to the building next door to the Police Station (now Linford’s fish and chips) where he continued with the stationery and the post office and leaving the drapery and leather side of the business. Jabez was suffering from increasing paralysis and in 1888 aged 39 he succumbed to its effects and he died. On the day of his funeral, the shops were closed and the blinds of the houses were all drawn. Mary Shelton continued to run the business and in 1888 she was appointed Registrar for the Deeping District. On the 1891 Census Mary was listed as Postmistress, Registrar and Stationer; Alice helped as a Post Office Clerk. Her daughters were all able to play the piano and had good singing voices and were in demand for concerts, singing in St Guthlac’s Church Choir. 20
Sheltons girls in boat
The eldest, Eleanor boarded at St Mark’s College. Peterborough. where in 1890 she passed the Trinity College Junior exams in the theory and practice of music. The family employed Edith Spague from Worcestershire and Mary Buck from Deeping St James. In 1895 St Guthlac’s was the setting for the marriage of Eleanor to Henry Dean, second son of George Dean of Deeping St James (issue 089). The Dean of Stamford officiated and there was a very large congregation in which the bride was given away by her uncle, Edward Shelton of Ely, and her sisters, Alice, Mary and Jessie were bridesmaids. The reception was at Mrs Shelton’s and a present of a marble clock from the principal postmen showed the esteem in which the family was held. The couple made their home in Desborough, Northamptonshire, where Herbert had his own business as a Chemist and Druggist. He moved to Trimdon where he became associated with the business of C.B. Henderson of Trimdon Colliery. He was fatally injured when in 1939 he was knocked down by a bus, the first victim of the blackout in the area. He left a widow, two sons and three daughters leaving £74 in his will. Eleanor then moved to be near her children in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, and died in December 1955 at Shrodell’s Hospital in Watford. Meanwhile Mary Shelton had remained at the helm of the Post Office in 1901 she was listed as Postmistress, Registrar and Stationer with Alice, Mary and Thomas employed as sorting clerks and telegraphists; Jessie was an assistant in the continued >

FEATURE stationery business. Annie Chantry from Deeping Gate was the family’s domestic servant. On the 1st March 1904, Mary senior died suddenly. Her funeral, like her husband’s, took place at St Guthlac’s with shops closing in respect and blinds all drawn in the windows on the route to the church. Pall bearers were past and present members of the outside staff of the post office: Messrs. F. Holland, J. Kisby, W. Kisby, J. Morris, A. Senescall and G. Wilder. The service was taken by the Very Revd Howard. Just over £2000 was left in her will. In April of the same year, the premises occupied by the Shelton family were put up for auction. Bidding for the shop, yard and outbuildings commenced at £300 and eventually it was knocked down to Mr Plowright for £523. This decided the fate of the children. Alice went to live with Eleanor Tom and Alice in Desborough, ahead of her marriage to Francis Stone, Post Office Clerk from Birmingham where the couple settled. They were in the city until they died, Francis aged 71 in 1948 and Alice in 1964. Mary and Jabez’s other daughters became career women. Mary Katherine (always known as Kate) passed her Civil Service exam in Boston in 1897 and became part of the established staff at the Spalding offices. She was promoted through the ranks of the Service and in 1911 was living on her own at 42 Warwick Chambers, Kensington. Ten years later she had moved to 40 Addison Gardens, Hammersmith. She retired to Cowes, Isle of Wight, where she died in 1965. Jessie trained to be a nurse and on the 1911 census she was Assistant Matron at Seaside Convalescent Home, Seaford, Sussex. From 1914-19 worked in London, treating the soldiers who returned from the War. In 1921 she was Hospital Matron at Waltonon-Thames, retiring to live at 1, Downage, Hendon. She died in 1972. 22
The Sheltons at the rear of the shop
Thomas Pole had joined the local militia in his spare time before his mother’s unexpected death. Later he was transferred to Leicester as a clerk telegraphist for the post office. In 1910 he married Lucy Maltby Jeffreys, a well-known Peterborough singer and teacher of music, youngest daughter of the late F.C. Jeffreys of Dawsmere, Lincolnshire. Mr Fawkes was best man and Miss S. Jeffreys was bridesmaid. There was no reception but guests gathered at the bride’s home where the couple received a large number of presents. Thomas was called up to the Royal Engineers in November 1917 but under post office and civil service rules he was not allowed to go abroad but was sent to the Royal Engineers signallers’ base Thomas Pole Shelton at Llandaff, Wales. Here he trained men to be telegraphists before they were sent abroad, often to the front line. It was highly important that trained men could notify enemy positions back to HQ as fast as possible. After the war the couple remained in Llandaff, Thomas working for the post office as a GEO surveyor. The couple moved to Leeds when Thomas was promoted to staff officer for the Post Office, retiring to Falmouth where he died in 1964 and Lucy in 1972. Mary and Jabez were not only hard-working entrepreneurs serving the people of the Deepings, but they left a family of high achievers who would leave their mark in their respective fields.

PROFILE
Take four girls Jackie Starr, Eleanor (Ellie) Sharpe, Pat Reedman and Pat Asplen. All names on the register at the Green School and now at the age of 80 still bound together in friendship! They are not just remarkable for the longevity of their friendship but also because their lives have straddled a period of great change in the Deepings. On her first day at school Pat Asplen (Little Pat) saw the rocking horse as she walked through the school doors and thought ’I am going to like it here!’ Pat had lived opposite the blacksmith in Halfleet and had watched the horses clip-clopping up the road to be shod, occasionally given a ride on the back of one – a love that encouraged her later to have her own horse which she kept at Ferry Meadows. Now as she hosts her friends for coffee, her own rocking horse greets you as you walk over the threshold! The girls can remember using a slate and chalk in their lessons, later to be replaced by dipping a pen in ink, and they played a lot with plasticine, a forerunner

England School the pupils would often go to services at the church and on Ascension Day they paraded behind Revd Piggot, carrying the Cross round the Vergette’s fields where they would sing ‘We plough the fields and scatter’. Harvest Festival, Plough Sunday and many services in church with Revd Piggot, all played a part in daily life.
of PayDoh. There were crates of milk distributed at playtime. The overwhelming cold was not mitigated by the cast iron stove with a guard around it, and outside toilets (brrr) had wooden seats. At home bath night would be on Friday with a tin bath in front of the fire shared by all the family. So when Jackie’s father had a house built in Halfleet in 1934 with a proper bathroom it was much admired! The Asplen family were one of the first to move into the newly built council houses in Godsey Crescent. The lives of the families were enmeshed in the farming year– Ellie’s dad farmed at Crown Lodge Farm in Langtoft Fen, Jackie’s was self-employed, working in agriculture, Ken Asplen worked for Gibbons as a haulage contractor while Pat Reedman’s (Big Pat) dad worked for Vergettes of Towngate West. Pat Asplen’s mother would bike to the fields with her hair in rollers tied up in a turban to go potato picking but would return home, take her rollers out, apply some lipstick and have a cooked meal on the table with treacle pudding, a family favourite, every day. As the Green School was a Church of
Annual Sunday School trips to Skegness with Woottons coaches were much anticipated and the half-crown each donated by Mr Ellis was an added bonus for a glorious day out! Christmas was a high point in the calendar and the presents and food supplied by the Officers at RAF Langtoft are still remembered fondly today.
When Jackie received her school report from Mrs Pratt, her teacher at the age of eight, it contained the immortal words ‘Good except when she gets a talkative spell.’ No change there then! Little did Mrs Pratt realise that it was the talkative element that would sustain Jackie and her three school friends until they all shared their eightieth birthday this year. The girls enjoyed birthday parties in each other’s houses, and were later bridesmaids at each other’s weddings. After the Green

School the girls went to the Elementary School in Church Street, Market Deeping, then going on to Robert Manning School in Bourne until the Deepings School was built which they all attended except for Jackie who went to the Fane Girls School in Stamford, where she was taught shorthand typing; a skill which sustained her through a secretarial career in later life. Having seen Calamity Jane at the Empire cinema in Market Deeping at ten years old, Little Pat was fascinated by the antics of its star Doris Day and would save her pennies for a copy of Melody Maker which she would purchase from Jack Blades shop in the Market Place whenever there was a picture of Doris in its pages! Both Pats had a paper round from Jack Blades.
On leaving school Little Pat went to work at the Chemist Shop in the Market Place, R.C Whites, Ellie joining her later and then leaving to get married. As teenagers the girls would meet the local crowd in the Harlequin Coffee Shop, opposite the Empire in Church Street. They recall a lovely atmosphere where, under the watchful eye of proprietor Bill Mulligan, they would listen to records, Freddie and the Dreamers being a firm favourite. Little Pat was the only one of the quartet to move away, to Peterborough, where she lived in Newark Avenue before restoring a cottage in Newborough with her husband. There Pat would hold parties to which the whole gang was invited. It was at this time that Queensgate was opened and Pat worked on the
information desk, a thrilling job at the shiny new shopping mall! Big Pat took a job at Hotpoint where she met her husband. Jackie worked in Peterborough at first at the Yorkshire Insurance Company and then at the Peterborough Investment Company before a job at the Estate Agent Rippons, Bangs and Reed in the Market Place caught her eye. In this role she was instrumental in helping Pat move back to Market Deeping. Birthdays continue to be marked with parties; there were murder mysteries and fancy dress, and the playful exuberance has continued first with the Young at Heart Group and now with Deep in Friends which meet every Tuesday fortnight at the Priory Church Hall. 25

Wilson’s
Walks
In this walk Mum found a much more local starting place as we went to explore some villages following public footpaths. We started out in Baston, a picturesque village just off the A15 between Bourne and Market Deeping. There’s plenty of parking along the Main Street or outside the local pubs. From the village we crossed over the A15 to join the public footpath that runs up the side of Maltby Drive. The footpath takes you towards King Street and away from the A15 on a public footpath to Wilsthorpe. The roads were quite quiet as we headed into Wilsthorpe. Opposite the church we turned left and followed the footpath towards Greatford and Braceborough. Being well away from the road, this part of the walk was like freedom to my paws. I’m a good boy and Mum let me off the lead in this section. It was woofmazing feeling my ears flap in the wind! Back on my lead we took the path towards Greatford and picked up the footpath back towards Langtoft. This takes you back over Kings Street again and then straight across the fields back to the A15. You could walk back through Langtoft and make a stop at the crossroads at their local pub or use the

village shop. There is a public footpath just by the allotments which leads you back through the open fields and into Baston again. Because a couple of sections of this 7.5 mile circular walk are well away from the roads and through public footpaths crossing fields, with a good view, Mum said it was OK for me to have a good run. Mum kept me on the lead on the parts of the walk that are on the road.
Looking across the low-lying fields there are lovely views all round, and across so much space I only met one other dog. This walk can be lengthened or shortened in several places as there are lots of footpaths to choose from and makes a great way to explore with our paws on the doorstep. Back at home Mum washed my paws and I was ready for a rest on my cosy bed.

Bag & Bin on the road & pathways Wildlife: Birds, small mammals. The ground across the fields in places can be uneven and the wooden bridges are a bit slippery so our humans really need walking boots or wellies. My paws loved it all!

Freemasonry in the Deepings
FREEMASONS
by David Robinson
Freemasons have been meeting in Deeping for more than 120 years, sustaining a 300-year tradition as part of one of the world’s oldest nonreligious societies. Currently two lodges meet in the Deeping’s Masonic centre at New Row, Deeping St James; both named after local saints, with close local links. The St Guthlac lodge was formed in 1901, and named after a hermit who lived at nearby Crowland, with St Pega lodge, formed in 1970, and named after Guthlac’s sister, who gave her name to local village Peakirk (Pega’s kirk). The two Deeping lodges currently have almost 80 members between them, and are two of the 76 Lodges in the Freemasons’ Province of Lincolnshire, that currently have over 3,000 members. ‘People often have a view of what Freemasonry is, with many of these views formed by people with no exposure to the masonic world and based on nothing more than hearsay,’ says David Shaw, Worshipful Master of St Pega lodge. He added: ‘What people often don’t understand, or choose to ignore, is that Freemasonry is one of the oldest secular social and charitable organisations in the world. Modern Freemasonry’s roots lie in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our castles and cathedrals, with many still standing today.
A joint meeting of St Guthlac and St Pega members at the Deeping Masonic centre
‘Today’s Freemasons are just trying to be the best possible versions of themselves, with four important values helping to define our path through life: integrity, friendship, respect, and charity. ‘We live in an uncertain world, and living by these principles provides individuals with stability and mutual support that helps in a number of ways, including direct and indirect charity support at a national, regional and local level. Health and Wellbeing (H&WB) is also a major focus for the members, with support a major priority on an ongoing basis. This was especially important during the recent Covid pandemic.
When St Pega church in Peakirk, had the lead stolen from it’s roof, St Pega Lodge donated towards the roof fund. As part of this, the fund raising committee hosted a visit of 30 members and their partners to St Pega Church, for a very informative tour.Presenting the cheque: l-r Chris Hayes, Rev Mark-Aaron Tisdale, Pauline Cooke, Sheila Lever and Avril Lumley Prior A joint meeting of St Guthlac and St Pega members at the Deeping Masonic centre

FREEMASONS Covid was a good of example of where Freemasons were able to work together to ensure members were OK during these challenging and unknown times, especially for people shielding, or having H&WB challenges.’ Freemasonry is a charitable organisation, and nationally giving almost £1m a week to deserving causes. So it’s no surprise that St Pega lodge has supported a number charities in recent years, including The Ukraine Relief Fund, Sri Lankan flood support, SENSE, Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, Wainfleet flood relief, LIVES, St Pega Church (Peakirk) roof appeal, Deepings Library nativity scene, Market Deeping Junior Cricket Club, Deeping Ladies Rugby Club, Deeping Round-Table food bank and Deeping Exotic Pet Rescue. As well as regular meetings, the social side of Freemasonry is very important,
with activities through the year including a Christmas carol service, annual BBQ and walk, car treasure hunts, ‘Frog races’ and the highlight of the social year, the ladies night, where we honour the master’s wife and others ladies who help to support members to make the lodge the success it is. Membership is open to men over 18 from all backgrounds, and the organisation’s aim is to empower members to be the best they can be. As Mike English, Director of Ceremonies St Pega lodge, highlighted: ‘It’s about good old fashioned values, respect, building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society. ‘Freemasonry provides a structure for members to come together under these common goals, enabling people to make new friendships, develop themselves, make valuable contributions to charitable causes and importantly, have fun.’ Interested in learning more about Freemasonry in general or becoming a member? RAY PAWLETT
Relax It is well known that Tai Chi and meditation ‘help us to relax’. Relaxation bring along huge health benefits such as better mental health, better heart health and feeling better in ourselves just to name a few. The list could really go on forever! Let’s stop for a minute though and think about what we actually mean by relaxation. Take a look at the image of the apprentice Buddhist monks. They certainly look relaxed and their eyes are shut in meditation but they don’t look tired. If they were tired, their heads would drop forward – we all know that feeling! From their straight sitting postures, we can see that they are actually quite alert. If for them, relaxation meant the same as it does when you sit in front of the fire, watching TV with a glass of something nice, they certainly would not look quite so straight and alert. Meditation and Tai Chi share many common roots and principles. Both arts use a combination of relaxation and concentration. It is another of the Yin and Yang pairings that Oriental philosophy frequently observes.
The Yin force of relaxation has a downward direction. Think about when we sink into our favourite armchair. The more Yang feeling of concentration has an upward direction. In Tai Chi and meditation, we are balancing the two forces – so we have an active balance between relaxation and concentration. The benefits of this balance are many for the body, mind and spirit. Simply stated – reducing physical and mental tension on your body and mind will make you feel better and function better in whatever you do! Try this. Just stand up for a few minutes. Do you notice how after a very short amount of time that physical and mental tensions appear? Maybe your knees become tight or your ego tells you that you are wasting your time standing around and doing nothing. This is normal. Our bodies carry the memories of everything that has happened, whether it is sleeping in an awkward position last night or a childhood memory. This information is all there and can cause our body, mind and spirits to become unbalanced or distorted. Now try standing up again and just swinging your waist to the left and right so that your arms swing
out. This is a great exercise for relaxing the body and therefore the mind. After a couple of minutes swinging - slowly stop. Now feel into your body. Lift your head and keep your chin slightly downwards. This will straighten your spine. Do you notice how you feel more centred and balanced? Is your mind more focused? Your body is tingling – you are in the moment! Using meditation and Tai Chi techniques, we clear our internal inventory and live in the moment. It is not that we forget things that have happened in our lives it is just that their negative effect has been somewhat cancelled. Regular practice of Tai Chi and meditation can help us to feel more relaxed, have greater concentration powers and feel that we are being our true or authentic selves. If you would like to learn more about Tai Chi, holistic health meditation or any forms of stress reduction, please contact me via email ray@ki-ways.co.uk or give me a ring on 07413 620344 or look up the website www.ki-ways.com 41

BIRDS
Words & Pictures by William Bowell
Christmas is a time of joy, spending time with the family and gift giving to friends and loved ones. It’s also a time of reflection. This year I will be contemplating, not the gifts I am yet to (very gratefully) receive, but those that have already been given.
Both Nan and Grandad loved me telling them what I had seen in their garden and to encourage me further, Grandad built me a bird table, just like his, for my parents’ garden.
In late October, our family lost a most wonderful man, my grandfather, Eric Bowell. He was 94 and up until very recently, my grandmother and him were living a good life in their bungalow they had built themselves, so many years ago. My Grandad was a true inspiration to his family. His passions were his boats and love of the water, with nature and fishing going hand in hand with those. Grandad was a keen gardener and loved getting his hands dirty and showing you around his garden (which usually involved him giving you a plant to take home as well).
Grey Heron
My grandparents even took me on my first birding trip, although it wasn’t quite what they had planned. We set out from Deeping, with the view to drive from Deeping to the Wash, following the Welland, for as much as possible. However, I insisted we stopped at every bird and was absolutely thrilled to see a Heron by a pond along the Highbank and had always wanted to see one catch a fish, so made my grandparents wait patiently, for the Heron to strike a fish. It never did and we never made it as far as the Wash on that occasion, but I learnt so much and had certainly caught the birding bug!
I have several birds and places that will forever a connection to the great man and our shared past and these are a great gift and something I take comfort from and will every time I see them. Marsh Harrier is one that is buried deep in my early memories with Grandad and Dad.
Kingfisher
His work ethic was immense, holding down hard jobs, including being a retained fireman for nearly thirty years. Grandad was a great singer and loved remembering and singing songs (often for the public). He loved cooking and making curries and all sorts and had a huge fondness for the Scouts and the life skills it had given him, even rising to King’s Scout level in his youth. And above all, he loved his family and always had a smile and a mischievous look on his face, as he would tell yet another hilarious and captivating tale from his and Nan’s younger years. All these things and so much more, I can see mirrored in all the members of our family. Some of us have taken on more than just one of these traits (although none of us have inherited Eric’s ability to sing, as many can testify!). Like my Grandad, I am a lover of the outdoors and can’t stand spending a whole day indoors. When I was very young, my grandparents’ garden pond was a constant source of fascination and Grandad would love to help find newts and frogs around the garden with me. He showed me blackbirds’ nests and where the kingfisher would sit over the river, near their garden. I would sit in my grandparents’ kitchen, watching the birds come and go to their bird table. They had such a great variety; it was better than anything on the telly.
Marsh Harrier is a rare bird still but back in the early 90s was even rarer and certainly wasn’t breeding around the Deepings like it does today. My Grandad had taken me to the end of the Welland several times, looking for this rare, magnificent bird of prey, but with no joy but the sights and sounds of the marshland were mesmerising even to my younger self. Little Egret Finally, one afternoon, Dad and I walked along the Welland near Fossdyke, with Grandad and out rose this female Marsh Harrier. It seemed massive and I can still see it today, despite having seen millions since. We spent lots of time around that marsh, on my grandparents’ boat and Grandad would love finding a Marsh Harrier before me, to show me all over again. They will forever be one of my favourites and ‘our’ bird.
Even in my teens, I could spend days out on the boat with Nan and Grandad, they were such great company, and I remember my first Little Egret from such a trip. They have of course become a common bird around here since but back then they were not and Grandad was so excited, encouraged by my Nan, he turned the continued >

BIRDS boat round so we could have another look. It is a bird that always reminds me of that occasion when I see one.
Grandfather was the catalyst of it all and remained something we had in common forever.
This Egret wasn’t even my Marsh Harrier grandparents’ first; they had seen one from their boat, along the Welland, in the 1960s when they were rare and wrote to the late TV naturalist, Ted Ellis, to report their find. He replied excitedly, with a hand drawn sketch and explained it was probably the same one that had been seen in Norfolk the week before. Grandad would often pick me up of a weekend, to take me birding around the local reserves and pits when Dad was away on business. If we met anyone out in the field, he would always introduce himself and include me in the conversation and it was through such an encounter that I met my late teen birding mentor, Trevor. Of course, dear reader, no one person is responsible for encouraging me to explore the natural world and I owe so much to lots of others, but my

My Grandad loved hearing where my birding adventures had taken me and because he and Nan had done so much themselves, he would always be able to reply with an impressive story back. One of the last adventures I told him about was mine and Dad’s trip to Shetland in early October. ‘Now tell me all about it’, he said. So we did. And he loved it. Of course, we will all miss him a great deal this Christmas, but we will hold the gifts he gave us through his life that bit tighter too. Merry Christmas to everyone. And thank you, Grandad. Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.

• Wills • Lasting Powers of Attorney • Probate • Estate Planning • Trusts • Inheritance Tax Matters • Deed of Variation • Care Cost Advice Wills Why do I need a will? Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney What are they? Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf. These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
Probate What is it? When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.
