Welcome
The 11th day of the 11th month is significant as Remembrance Day, but it is also St Martin’s Day when the funeral of a Roman soldier who became Bishop of the French town of Tours is commemorated. One of his notable saintly acts was to cut his own cloak in two to protect a beggar from perishing in a snowstorm. In Germany the Day is marked with bonfires and lantern processions. This year the home-schooled children, part of Connected Learning, had their own lantern parade in Deeping St James culminating in the reading of a prayer in the Priory Church Hall gardens when they promised to ‘ask themselves each day what they can do to let their light shine more brightly. To be a light sender.’ As we enter the darkest time of the year that’s not a bad thought to take with us, is it? The team at I’d rather be wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas! Judy Stevens 3

The travelling crib is a wonderful West Deeping tradition, where a handmade wooden crib filled with hand knitted nativity figures winds its way through the houses of West Deeping. For many years households have enjoyed displaying and playing with the figures for a few days before meeting with neighbours to pass it on its way. It’s final destination being St Andrews church where it is returned on Christmas Eve for the evening service.

The church (St Guthlac’s) strives to be holy, but the church roof is holey! During the most recent inspection a number of cracks were found in the lead panels on the tower roof and in the asphalt guttering that surrounds the base of the tower roof. The cracks needed to be repaired Image: eVo-air Drone Photography urgently to prevent further damage to the roof and its supporting structures. The scaffold provided safe access to the roof, then new mastic asphalt was applied to the gutters and the cracks in the roof were patched using recycled lead. Another piece of upcoming work is the repainting of the West and Chancel doors. The roof repairs are around £5000. NEWS Sleet and snow and icy conditions did not deter Matt Holland and his friends and family from walking and running over 3,600 miles (the distance between Market Deeping and New York!) this January to raise £7,000 in memory of ‘Dutch’ Holland, his father. Said Matt, ‘All this was to raise money for the doctors and nurses at Peterborough ICU who were nothing short of fantastic looking after Dad.’ Matt, who is manager of the Insideout Home Store and Vice Chairman of Deepings United, has been an unsung hero during the crisis of the last two years. He sadly lost his father after a lengthy battle against Covid 19 in November 2020 and then set about a fundraising campaign of which his father would have been very proud. This summer a presentation was made to some of the health professionals who had looked after Dutch, leaving a lasting legacy in his name.

Imagine the scene! Five hundred plus geese on the riverbank in Deeping Gate eating corn and leftovers to fatten them up for the Christmas table! John Huffer was the farmer whose family of farmers and smallholders can be traced back to the 1700’s in Deeping Gate. The coming of the railway in nearby Helpston had given them the opportunity to expand the poultry business and John born in 1830 to John and Sarah Huffer who had embraced the challenge and the culinary fashion to have goose on the Christmas table. As well as geese John bred turkeys and chicken and would employ two men at night to walk the river bank and fire off their guns occasionally to prevent opportunistic foxes and people trying to get a free meal. This did not stop a dog belonging to Mr Hides of Deeping Gate in April 1878 going amongst the flock of 61 goslings and killing all but one! The birds were worth about three shillings each and were sold to London Hotels and at the markets in Stamford, Market Harborough, Peterborough and Uppingham. At the zenith of his enterprise in 1881 he supplied London Club Houses and Hotels with 1200 geese and a number of turkeys and other fowl. Buyers wanted to see their geese alive and not trussed, plucked and hung as they do now and so the geese were taken alive to the station and to toughen up their feet they were walked through tar after they had been herded up like cattle.
boarding at the Crown & Anchor in Deeping St James. He was the Secretary of the Deeping Gate Pig Club of which his father was the President, having started up the Club in 1868. This successful business did not pass without incident. In 1875 it was reported in the Stamford Mercury that John had lost one of his workers. An inquest was held at the Black Bull with Mr Percival as the Coroner after the body of John Lambert, aged 75, had been found in the Welland. He had been a hardworking and trustworthy labourer for John Huffer for many years and that day was no different. Having had his supper and drink allowance at John Huffer’s he had left to go home a little after 10.00pm. It was thought that from the darkness of the night and the unevenness of the path at High Locks he had lost his footing and fallen in the river. He was wearing a large overcoat and this floated him down the river to Deeping St James Bridge where he was found drowned the next day, floating on top of the water – the verdict was accidental death. Calamity struck again in 1886 when at about 11.00 am on a Saturday morning a fire broke out in Mr Huffer’s stack yard. Smoke and flames were seen issuing from a large straw stack. Every means was tried by the neighbours to put the fire out but it was the Fire Engine under the direction of Mr Dean with an
Behind every great man is a woman, as they say, and for John this was his second wife Harriet Barker whom he had married in 1864 after the death in childbirth of his first wife Frances Beeson. With two children, Lucy and John, from his first marriage, and three from his second; Emily, James and Annie, the family played a large role in the community in Deeping Gate. FEATURE efficient brigade which finally put it out and the buildings and property were saved. It was thought that children playing with matches had caused the fire. At the heart of the community, John Huffer ensured that every inhabitant Deeping Gate and his workers were given a fowl for Christmas dinner. This would last for several days and afterwards the goose fat was kept as a cure. If suffering from a bad cough or respiratory problems people would rub the fat in their chests and tie brown paper over the grease. Some would do this all winter to prevent coughs and colds. And when it was the Jubilee Celebration for Queen Victoria John Huffer once more stepped in and every inhabitant of the hamlet was accommodated in his orchard and barn for a celebration. He and one or two other locals had raised subscriptions for the celebrations and about 50 children and their parents were ‘regaled to their hearts content and provided with an excellent repast’. Edmund Waterton from the Manor presided over the event and John Huffer was Vice Chairman. The Chairman gave the toast to ‘Our Sovereign Lady, the Queen’ and in the evening men had tobacco and ale while others danced in the new-mown field and children were presented with medals. There had been celebrations too when in 1884 Lucy, John’s eldest daughter, had married John Pridmore, a cattle dealer at St Peter’s in Maxey. They became next-door neighbours to her father in Deeping
Gate near High Locks. Son James married Hannah Parker in 1890 and moved to Peterborough where he had work as a Clerk for the Post Office. Anna stayed close to home in Bridge Street, Deeping St James, after her marriage to Thomas Lambert, a blacksmith. When Thomas retired they moved to the Moorlands, Deeping Gate. Emily had also married at St Peter’s, in 1896 to a groom/gardener named Henry Hallam, setting up at home at Upper Broughton, Nottinghamshire. In the 1891 Census it was reported that John had increased the acreage on the farm and employed Elizabeth Lambert (aged 47) as a housekeeper/domestic and her son Thomas (28) as a farm labourer. By 1901, though, his wife Harriet had passed away and he had retired but still employed Elizabeth as his housekeeper. On 17th February 1907 John too died after a short illness, leaving a not inconsiderable estate of £1428. William Smith purchased the livestock as previously arranged before John’s demise. In March 1907 the property was put up for sale at The Bell Inn. Bidding commenced at £150 for the freehold house, outbuildings, yard, garden and orchard situated in Deeping Gate. The property was withdrawn at £250 but was afterwards sold privately while 2 acres, 2 roods and 6 perches at Linchfield were sold to Mr M Smith for £165. With John’s death came the end of an era – when goose were fattened for the London Christmas table on the banks of the Welland.

FEATURE PROFILE
Dancing with Fire! The Deepings Dancing School has existed since the 1950s but since 1985 it has been synonymous with its inspirational Principal, Marina Palmer, who took over the school from its founder, Gwen Wilbourne. From 1985 to 2020 Marina was the driving force of the school, not to mention being the ‘prima ballerina’, choreographer and chief administrator. But how did it happen that a ‘born and bred’ London girl should leave the metropolis and find herself, years later, running a dance school in rural Lincolnshire? An old Russian saying has it that, ‘to live your life is not as simple as to cross a field’, and it certainly isn’t! Marina was born in Dulwich, London, of a Northern Irish mother and an English father. There was musical talent on her mother’s side of the family (including the famous tenor, Joseph Locke), and Marina’s mother played a number of different instruments. Marina started dancing classes early, at the age of three. It soon became clear that she was ‘a natural’ and before she was in her teens she had gone through some of London’s most prestigious dance schools and was trained in ballet, tap and acrobatics. Unsurprisingly, to dance on the stage became her ambition. Her first chance to appear with professionals in London Variety theatres came in 1948-49
when a Christmas/New Year show, entitled ‘Sauce Tartare’, was staged at the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End. Marina auditioned and gained a place in the chorus and this was memorable as it was the time when Marina appeared on stage together with the 19-year-old Audrey Hepburn who was in the senior group! Not yet in her teens, permission had to be given by her school board for Marina to miss some days of schooling. The following year Marina was again chosen to appear in the Christmas show – called ‘Sauce Piquante’; the cast included a number of actors who were to become the comic and variety stars of the 1950s and 60s, including Norman Wisdom, Bob Monkhouse, Moira Lister and Margaret Lawford. In the years that followed Marina appeared regularly in pantomime in many of the London theatres from Brixton to Richmond, Clapham and the Golders Green Hippodrome where the well-known comics of the day also performed. The comedian, Charlie Chester, she says, gave her some of the best advice she ever received about, especially, the timing of the different aspects of her act – for Marina’s act soon expanded to include, as well as dancing, also contortion and fire-eating! Not everyone would have been happy about their spouse performing fire-eating on stage. Marina and Ken married young, at 18 and 21 respectively, and Ken was at first opposed to the idea of Marina doing any fire-eating.

However, she managed to talk him round and eventually even persuaded him to design her a wheel of fire for the act. The wheel involved spokes of asbestos rope soaked in surgical spirit. ‘Health and safety’ had not been invented then! Knowing that theatre work is always unpredictable, however, Marina’s wise mother had seen to it that her daughter had another string to her bow. Consequently she trained as a shorthand typist in addition to being a dancer and, for a number of years she worked as a ‘temp’ for many different firms, between shows. The shows took her all over the country from Dunoon in Scotland to Cromer, Yarmouth and Brighton in the south, where the company appeared in variety theatres and on seaside piers and, as well as contortion and fireeating, Marina, having acted as magician’s assistant earlier, added some magic tricks to her own act. It was in Brighton that she had her one fire-eating accident, the cause of which was an illustration of just how important ‘timing’ was: the comedian whose act was before Marina’s exceeded his time slot so that Marina, waiting in the wings had doused her sticks in the fluid too soon and it dripped onto her arm. Her arm burst into flames and Marina had to be rushed to hospital. Miraculously, the fire was extinguished quickly and no long-term injury or disfigurement resulted. It was a truly sobering lesson though, in the importance of timing, including that of other acts close to your own. When the company was on tour for weeks or even months at a time then the artists usually lived in ‘digs’, 22
which meant having a room in a private house in whichever town they were in. Often the landlady was a widow who had rooms to spare and who regularly took in performers from the travelling theatre company. Marina proved to be as skilled in her ‘secondary’ occupation, as in her dancing and stage career, and the companies that employed her for administrative and typing work were giving her increasing amounts of responsibility. Eventually this led her into a permanent position in the Civil Service (with agreed time off as required still to perform in shows!). In 1983 the Department of the Environment decided to relocate the main office, based in Belgrave Square, together with some regional offices of the Nature Conservancy Council, to Peterborough. Marina and Ken were persuaded to ‘up sticks’ and move north too. It was now 1984 and Marina, as well as dancing and choreographing shows in London, was also running her own large school of dancing in the city. There was thus a lot of travelling up and down during the first years in Market Deeping. Juggling several very different, but demanding, jobs is never easy, even when they are all in the same town, but trying to do it when the venues are in different parts of the country, many miles apart, is hard to maintain over a long period. Marina decided to sell her London school of dancing. Some of her pupils went on to the Corona, Peggy
O’Farrell and Italia Conti Stage School and appeared in films and shows alongside the likes of Ken Dodd, Cliff Richard and Tommy Steele. By an odd quirk of fate Marina found, soon after arriving in Market Deeping, that her near neighbour in the town was someone who had herself been a dancer, in London, in her youth, and was now the ‘about to be retired’ teacher and proprietor of the Deepings School of Dancing! Serendipity made manifest. Marina took over the school and in the following years the Deepings School of Dancing went from strength to strength and grew bigger. In March 2020 Marina’s assistant teachers, Kerrie Pateman, Gemma Crowson and Holly Teixeira, decided to hang up their dancing shoes and with this Marina decided it was the right time for her to retire too. She had exactly the right person to hand over to as well, namely, granddaughter Jessica (McBride), also an experienced dancer who has worked in London with many famous people. Marina still continues her classes with the ‘Adults Tap and Jazzercise’ classes on Tuesday evenings. Meanwhile, as Principal Jessica has taken the Deepings School of Dancing to a whole new level with her team of Assistant Teachers and, some of their pupils have already been auditioned and will be appearing in the Aladdin Panto to be put on at the New Theatre, Peterborough, over this Christmas and New Year season. Marina says she feels astonishingly blessed to have had someone like Jessica to hand the school on to and to see it going on with such energy and ‘joie de vivre’. Maggie McKay

A wedding year!
By Glenn Roberts
After years of careful preparation and unforeseen postponements due to the pandemic, Charlotte and Joe kicked off the wedding season at Molecey Mill. (21st - 23rd May). They went ahead with a more intimate wedding held within government guidelines that meant they could host 30 people. A far cry from the 150+ that they had originally planned but it made for a beautifully bespoke wedding weekend! From the personalised touches made for each guest to the handmade Orizuru (origami) cranes that floated in a group of 1000 overhead in the Oak Frame ceremony area – this was a wedding that felt special.
Charlotte & Joe
Following the ‘Buck’s celebrations, we diversified and held Leanne Colby’s Hen Party. Leanne was due to get married at the end of August but due to restrictions, couldn’t get away for the Hen-Do that her nearest and dearest had planned, so we decided to throw it at Molecey Mill. Up on Owl Island, Leanne’s friends and fiancé Laurence came together to decorate tepees and create a wonderland with decorations made during lockdown. The party was filled with happiness – after all, this was the first time the group had been allowed to see each other for over a year! As restrictions lifted, Molecey Mill geared up to host the wedding of Fran and James on the 25th - 27th June. This wedding was the first allowed to go ahead without restrictions. Decadently detailed flower arrangements and thoughtful personal touches from the bride and groom made for an impressive weekend. Fran and James tied the knot under the Oak Frame ceremony space which provided a beautiful atmosphere for their special day. The year now whizzing by at pace – July welcomed the wedding of Jane and Rob. They really knew how to make a lasting impact. After days of preparation and months of meticulous planning, they lit up the night sky with the most impressive firework display many have ever seen. Being the owners of Komodo Fireworks – the creativity and passion that went into the wedding and the following display were awe inspiring. On July 9th -11th, Sophie threw her beautiful mother a Zen-Hen do with TMP – Training

WEDDINGS
Made Personal – here at Molecey Mill. Green shakes and yoga during the day were followed by a cocktail masterclass hosted by a butler in the buff. This spectacularly fun evening was topped off with a chef cooking a tasting menu for them in The Granary. Needless to say there were a few sore heads for yoga on Sunday morning. Kerry and Gautier I first met in 2018. A lovely local couple who had been planning their special day for what seemed like an eternity. With Gautier’s family coming from France – it was touch and go as to whether the restrictions would align and they would be allowed to travel to Kerry and Gautier the UK. The weather was spectacular with most of the family swimming in the mill pond right up until it was time to get ready for their ceremony. The kindness and love that was felt by all was very touching and we felt honoured to be able to share this on this very special day. Svetlana and Phil brought a Latvian flavour to their celebrations on the 28th July. The collective efforts of Svetlana’s and Phil’s family made for a warm-hearted party filled with traditions from Latvia. This bunch of lovely people made us feel like part of their family and, with the help of lots of liquor, celebrated to their fullest until the early hours. The wedding of Amy and Craig in August was always going to be a spectacular party. Details, details, details… Amy and Craig had been super busy dressing the grounds and the house which made for such a lovely wedding weekend. The care and thoughtfulness, from the flowers, to Amy’s dress and everything in between, was staggering. Amy and Craig’s home town of Stevenage was a little bit of a distance from Molecey so they stayed with us for the duration of build up and breakdown which allowed us to spend some quality time with them. I loved how much they felt like family here at Molecey. Goodness, did they know how to party! After a week to recover and rest – it was showtime for our last wedding of the year. Leanne and Laurence held a special place in our hearts. As with all our couples, we are lucky enough to call them friends. I had taken on training both bride and groom since March , ahead of their wedding in August. They had made the choice to transform their bodies and create healthier habits that would see them into a happy future. We know just how much blood, sweat and tears went into this wedding, both physically and mentally. They achieved a combined weight loss of 2st 2lbs 29 continued >
WEDDINGS and Leanne dropped over 2 dress sizes! Laurence got the bug for running and achieved two full marathons and one half marathon within five weeks of one another to raise money and awareness for the charity ‘Mind’. Svetlana and Phil The joint Herculean effort paid off the couple looked spectacular! The official wedding took place ahead of their weekend at Molecey but a dear friend, Tom unofficially officiated at a blessing which was pure comedy genius. With the party in fits of laughter, his humour, integrity and love for the couple made for a truly magical start to some of the fondest memories of ‘Wedfest’. A relaxed festival vibe with firepits, fairy lights and lots of friends. Memories that we will treasure. In a year that has been fraught with uncertainty due to the pandemic a collective positivity and willingness to adapt, has meant we have been able to host incredibly special weddings and events here at Molecey Mill.

DEEPING SOS
The house that Deeping built by Dave Turner
On the night of 8th August 2020 little did we know that when we went to bed at around 11.30 pm, just four hours later our lives would be thrown into absolute turmoil. This was when a fire broke out on the wooden decking at the rear of the bungalow and within an hour our beautiful home and everything inside it was totally destroyed; despite the best efforts of the local voluntary fire service the bungalow could not be saved. The Red Cross Emergency response team arrived in the early hours of the morning and were amazingly helpful, providing us with an emergency loan to buy some clothing as well as caring for us in the Red Cross ambulance. As well as the Red Cross we were so grateful for the immediate help the Deepings Lions gave us with an emergency mobile phone as well as clothing and various other items we were so desperately in need of. I have been a member of The Lions for over ten years and never have we needed their help and support than that first morning. The following few weeks were very painful as we hunted through the charred remains of our home looking for any items that may have survived the fire and the fire services hoses. Amazingly we did recover a few items: some photographs of our travels and family, and our passports amazingly survived as did a box containing a lot of religious artefacts, medals and rosaries belonging to my late mum.
items of furniture , clothing and kitchenware were donated to us, the local Scout hut being the centre for collection. As well as this, local tradesmen and companies began to offer their help in rebuilding the bungalow, and a Just Giving page was set up by Joe Wray with an initial target of £1000; the sum eventually raised was a magnificent £5500, on top of which a local company, You Garden, donated a cheque for £5000. It completely floored us that people who knew nothing of us could be so kind.
We spent the following night and a further three weeks at my partner Olwyn’s brother’s house in Langtoft where we then spent the following days doing the necessary paperwork for insurance etc., only to find to our horror that we had let the house and contents insurance lapse… we were devastated.
The autumn and early winter months were extremely frustrating as we waited for planning permission to come through which it eventually did on 3rd December, my birthday. It was the best birthday present I received that day.
This is when the local community came on board to help us. Our next door neighbour, Mim Slater, who had been the first on the scene of the fire, set up the Facebook page ‘SOS Donations for Beech Close couple’ and the response was utterly amazing;
January 2021 and early February brought very cold wintry weather which once again stopped any building work from starting, but start it eventually did in mid February when Colin Virge, Steve Evans and Andy Spridgeon commenced the building of the bungalow. Despite working during the week on their everyday house building jobs they kindly gave up virtually every weekend in March and April to rebuild the outer walls up to the roof level; needless to say we owe those guys a huge amount of gratitude for their amazing efforts. continued >

DEEPING SOS
All this time Mim and her neighbour Clare Virge were still manning the Facebook page and keeping us informed of all the offers of help that continued to appear. One in particular still to this day brings tears to our eyes and that is when Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms offered to install a brand new kitchen and bathroom for us as a donation. Olwyn and I went to see them in their showroom and, trust me, the tears of gratitude certainly flowed... a most wonderful gesture on their part on top of many fabulous offers of help too numerous to mention. As the final blocks were laid I took some of my mother’s religious medals and placed them in between the blocks, ensuring that she was hopefully looking down on us and keeping us safe. May and June saw the bungalow really take shape as the roof trusses were delivered and placed into position. We had been desperately searching for a roofing company to install the roof but it was proving very difficult as most companies and tradesmen where incredibly busy. Then out of the blue Dave and Andy appeared on site asking if we were looking for roofers and they told us they would build the roof free of charge as we already had bought the materials, a fantastic offer that we gratefully accepted. Later that month as the windows and doors were installed the bungalow was finally watertight and we could then commence work inside. Olwyn and I laid the underfloor insulation which, having never having attempted anything like this before, was difficult to say the least, but once completed after a lot of cursing and swearing the screed floor could be laid and after four days of allowing the floor to dry and harden we could start marking out the internal stud walls. Again, trying to find tradesmen to help with the stud walls was almost impossible but Richard Edgington, a local joiner and carpenter came to the rescue. Richard 40
had already made the window templates for the builders to work to and now he came to help and advise us on stud wall construction, which, after one incorrect wall had to be taken down and rebuilt, between us Olwyn and I successfully built all the internal walls which on completion gave us immense satisfaction. As summer wore on and Covid would not go away it was becoming increasingly difficult to find the people to do the other internal work. Thankfully Olwyn’s brother Keith Griffiths was for many years a fully qualified electrician at Ketton cement works and he offered to do all the internal electrical wiring which I think according to him was about 1.5kms of wiring in total. Under his guidance we set the light switches and sockets into position and suddenly we could see light at the end of the tunnel. July brought about an amazing two weeks of transformation of the bungalow internally as Paul Smith agreed to fit the plasterboard and do the plastering, initially in between his other jobs but as luck would have it (for us anyway) a shortage of certain materials meant his other work was put on hold so that he could give us 100% of his time for two whole weeks. The bungalow was transformed in that time from a work site to a home. Once the plastering was complete Lee Sutton and his son Ollie, who had already been and laid all the heating pipes, arrived onsite to fit the radiators and install the gas boiler. It was now mid July and we had a target date of returning home of 1st August. The kitchen and bathroom were completed in a matter of days by Steve Devonport and his team of fitters and that date suddenly looked achievable, but there was to be one final hiccup in our planning and that was finding a tiler to tile both the bathroom and kitchen floors. All were incredibly busy, but once again lady luck was on our side as a previous customer of Olwyn, for whom she had made curtains for her home, offered for her tiler husband to do the work as soon as he became available. The other side to this story is that everything continued >

in the bathroom had been fitted without the floor tiles being laid all except the toilet… yes, we had no toilet, but on Friday 6th August we finally moved back into our now carpeted bungalow with a porta potty sitting in the corner of the bathroom. A week later the floor tiling was completed and the permanent toilet was fitted by Devonports.
people we have met through the fire happening; people who did not know us at all have become friends. The community of the Deepings has shown what a local community can do in a time of crisis for us and, believe me, we will be for ever in debt to everyone and every company that came forward and helped us. We can both still remember sitting outside the remains of the bungalow three or four days after the fire, going through the wet and fire-damaged photo albums when a couple appeared and offered to take them away and try to repair them, an offer we accepted. Later that day the couple’s granddaughter appeared with a box of homemade biscuits. ‘These are for you,’ she said, ‘because I felt sad seeing your home burnt down.’ That small gesture meant as much to us as any of the other offers of help.
Many people had questioned how we would feel returning to our home which we had escaped from exactly 12 months earlier by the skin of our teeth (five minutes according to the fire service) but in truth we had what was probably our best night’s sleep in all that time.
There are too many people to mention individually in this piece and I apologise for that, but I am sure you know who you are and that we both will be eternally grateful to each and every one of you.
It has been a remarkable 12 months in many ways, that neither of us would want to go through again, but having said that we have been bowled over by the
At the time of writing (early September) we have been back home almost four weeks now and it really does feel like our home again. There is still exterior work to be completed on the bungalow and the rear garden still looks like a storage yard, but eventually 20 Beech Close will be back to the lovely home and garden we so tragically lost on that dreadful night in August.

RAY PAWLETT
Winter Solstice - A Time to Rest?
asks Ray Pawlett
I find ancient wisdom incredibly interesting. The source is not really important to me – it can be anything from talking to people about ‘the old ways’, Taoism from the Far East, the Native American tradition or anything that speaks to my heart as having some sort of truth. Frequently, these different world views have the same thing to say. There are many overlaps but perhaps the most common theme is how we must find harmony with Nature if we are to find harmony within ourselves. A simple observation of Nature is the difference between light and dark. In general, when there is a lot of light, there is a lot of activity. When it is darker, there is less. Compare the winter and summer solstices. In the summer, nature is very active. When we get to winter solstice, many creatures are in hibernation, the trees have lost their leaves and very little is growing. In human terms, this means that in the summer our focus is more outwards with holidays, festivals and general business. For midwinter, our focus is more inwards with the dark nights and more spiritual thoughts.
That’s the theory anyway! When it comes to the winter solstice or Christmas we are inundated with people trying to sell us things, office parties, arranging family, presents – the list is endless! Our inherent need to slow down a bit in the midwinter is squashed and suppressed. There can be a cost to this. Mental health support services and charities always get ready for Christmas. The rate of suicide and depression tends to peak at this time of the year. Part of the problem is that as our nervous systems try to slow down for a more restful time of the year, we ramp it up with the special demands that we put on ourselves for Christmas. If this sounds like you, the first thing to think about is whether or not you need outside help. There are many people there to help even if it’s just talking to a friend over a cuppa. Perhaps though, you would like to make yourself a little more resilient to the pressures of the world? If your body and nervous system are craving rest – meditation is a good thing to try.
Try this:• Set yourself 30 minutes where you will not be disturbed • Find some relaxing music that you enjoy • Switch off the phone and lock the front door • Sit and listen to your music. Don’t try to read or anything else. Just sit and concentrate on the music. • Don’t worry if you fell asleep – it means that you were tired! If your thought is something like ‘Sounds great but when do I get the time for that?” you could probably use a properly coached session where nothing is disturbing you and you are being guided through meditation procedures. I am co-running a special ‘Winter Solstice Meditation Session’ on Monday 20th December at the Rosewell Centre, Holywell Road, Castle Bytham NG33 4SL. It runs from 10:00 to 1:00. If you would like to know more or book a place, please contact me via email ray@ki-ways.co.uk or give me a ring on 07413 620344 45

A Fine Finish Words and Pictures by William Bowell
In the wake of 2020, my outlook on my passion, birding, changed profoundly. I re-found the pleasure of our local environs and what could be found just a few miles from my home. My New Year’s resolution was to try and stick locally for 2021 and see just how many species I could see within the Deepings area; as I wrote about it in here, in the February IRBID. As the year draws to a close, I thought I had better give you an update dear reader, so you check my workings out and see my New Year’s resolution was kept!
patch, Deeping Lakes and migration through it. Dawn visits are always hopeful and a Kittiwake (which is a true ‘seagull’) made one April morning worth while. Passage waders, heading for the arctic were thin off the ground but flocks of Greenshank, a Turnstone and a couple of Grey Plovers kept the hopes of a good total alive.
This Red-throated Diver enjoyed a couple of weeks rest on the Welland near Crowland in February.
Do or do not; there is no try As the famously great philosopher. Yoda, once said, ‘do or do not, there is no try’. And indeed, the green fellow is right. And I’m happy to report my ‘trying’ to keep local was largely successful.
tried to visit every day in the spring which wasn’t that easy this year, with April and the beginning of May being exceptionally cold for the season. My efforts weren’t rewarded quite so much as the previous year but nevertheless a few ‘goodies’ appeared and helped swell my growing year list.
Flying High Back in February, a beast from the east bolstered Sure, I had a trip to Shetland, as I usually do but as my young year list with some great coastal birds, that is my favourite place on the planet, I’m sure you displaced by the terrible weather. Red-necked Grebe, will forgive me of that. And I did engage in some Red-throated Diver and Shag were all gathered up rather fun trips to see rare in one afternoon- none birds from all over the are species that are even planet that had arrived in annual most years! One Britain during the year. A bit of strong wind had leopard doesn’t change set my year list in a it’s spots that much. But spin! And to cap it off be assured that not every a Ring-necked Duck trip was a winner, so I did from America appeared suffer a bit dear reader at Tallington Lakes the (and one trip my car next day- the first of a collided with a deer and Incredibly three Ring-necked Ducks were remarkable three found that was very costly… but found in the Deepings this year. this year in the area! that’s another story)! The main focus of my gaze during the year, was of course my beloved Deeping Lakes. Just like last year, I 46
The spring was a hard slog as mentioned but still saw some great birds such as Spoonbill at Baston Fen, Wood Sandpiper at Maxey Pits and enjoyed my
The biggest highlight, however, came just a few weeks ago and only a mile and half from my front door. Josh Jones is something of a bird magnet and has found some great birds this year, including the beforementioned Ring-necked Duck. In early November, Josh found a Pacific Golden Plover among 2,000 or so European Golden Plover near the Deeping bypass. This rare bird should be wintering on the southeast coast of Asia and has only been recorded in Lincolnshire on a handful of occasions in the past. Smaller than our Golden Plovers, with a different call and longer legs, there isn’t much to tell it apart so could be a real challenge to find even when you knew it was there. An absolutely stunning first for the Deepings area. The ‘HOwlers’ And yet despite all these great birds, I still have missed some straightforward species. The most obvious one is Tawny Owl! They are the most nocturnal of all the Owls but I’m not sure what excuse I have for need
Almost prehistoric in appearance, this Shag was the result of strong wind in February
The search to see as many birds as possible in the Deepings in a year draws to a close hearing a hoot yet. I missed out on Garganey this year as well. This attractive pint-sized duck is our only summer migrant duck and last year I couldn’t go a visit to Deeping Lakes in the spring without bumping into one, two or three of the little blighters! This spring was a completely blank one but no problem, thought I, there is always the Autumn- yet nothing! There are other pretty standard species that have so far eluded me, including Corn Bunting and Tree Sparrow and I am sure with a bit of effort I could easily catch these up but as the Garganey proves- there are no guarantees! The Final countdown Back in February I said 180 for the whole of the Peterborough area is quite a challenge so end anywhere near that would be incredible. Therefore,
BIRDS
I think my total 165 currently, is pretty respectable. Of those 165 species, I have recorded 135 of them at Deeping Lakes! No bad for what is, quite a small reserve. It is only mid-November when I am writing this dear reader and there is every chance of squeezing another few year ticks. Who knows; 170 could still be possible? Now where is that Tawny Owl and Corn Bunting…. Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.

g Great Christmas v g v One year I received a Beatrix Potter Mould. I remember making it, painting it, and absolutely loving the whole process. I do love anything creative, and it kept me busy for quite some time! Another favourite Christmas gift was always a new item of clothing. It always felt such a luxury and it was a treat to wear something new on Christmas Day. I remember getting a new scarf one year and wearing it all day, even whilst having Christmas lunch! Sophie Allport
The present that means the most to me is, not unsurprisingly, an oil painting, a gift in 2012, a special year for me, from Glenn. The Christmas tag is still hanging on the back, it wasn’t wrapped up, but neither of us would worry about the wrapping. By British artist, Henry Samuel Merritt (b.1884) who worked mostly in watercolour depicting topographical farms and fields, villages, castles, monuments and the coast. At the outbreak of war in 1939 there was a concern that these scenes would be lost forever and Merritt worked with other artists to record the landscape as it then was. My painting is a bucolic traditional harvest scene, and the positive message of the harvest safely gathered in makes me smile every time I see it! It depicts the joy of autumn coming and being ready for winter as the summer sun fades. As I now live in a former corn mill, this is even more relevant to me today and I have it hanging proudly on the wall at Molecey. Graham Magee

jg g g v g g j g tu My favourite Christmas present would have to be a bird table. Made by my Grandfather, a man whom helped spark my love of the natural world. For me it all began with his bird table, in their garden. I used to marvel at the coming and goings at their bird table. Amazed that one place and one action, could attract so many birds of so many different kinds. My Grandad was fantastic at making things as well. A real do-er so when he built me a bird table, complete with a place to hang feeders and little roost/nest hole in the top, I was thrilled. I could sit at home and watch the birds, just like I did at their house. A true inspiration and great man who I am happy to say, at the grand age of 92, continues to encourage my interests in the natural world to this day. Will Bowell

Little did my parents realise what they were starting when they gave me my first model train set for Christmas 1956. I was only four years old and so was told that I was too young to play with it, but my Dad and uncle certainly enjoyed it. The train set comprised a basic Triang 0-6-0 tank engine, a few goods’ wagons and a small oval circuit of track. The box artwork showed a more substantial set-up than the contents! As the years went by, I developed an interest in real railways and also wanted to build a proper layout with more track and models. Pocket money was saved and spent on acquiring models to add to my collection. Since then I have written a book about model railways, contributed to magazines and part-works on trains large and small, and have been interviewed on TV and radio about the hobby. Today’s scale trains are much more like the real thing, but I still enjoy playing with my old models and using my imagination. David Brown
G R AY T O N E S The most memorable, wonderful, and surprising Christmas present bought for me was a beautiful Georgian lover’s eye ring, which became popular in the 18th century. In these times, the wealthy would commission these handpainted miniatures, and have them encased into jewellery such as rings and pendants, and they would be worn as secret valentines to their lovers. I have always been fascinated by them, and when this lover’s ring came up for sale at an auction house in London, I fell in love with it, but knew, with an estimate of £400-£600, it would sell for much more – as an auctioneer myself, I have seen them reach the thousands! However, somehow, this little treasure came to me in a small box under the Christmas tree, and I can be seen wearing it on auction days for good luck! Auctions are a great place to buy Christmas gifts – whether you want a bargain or something very special... and if doing so, you can be proud in the knowledge that ‘Antiques are Green!’ Our pre-Christmas auction is on 10th December.
