Welcome
As we commemorate the centenary years of the First World War, it is hard to believe that living in Deeping St James is a couple who between them can remember a Zeppelin flying low overhead and siblings running home from school shouting with delight that ‘the war is over!’. Having had a family life in Whaplode, where the couple farmed and brought their children up as Methodists, they moved to Deeping twelve years ago to be near to their family. In January, Madge Hotchkin will celebrate her 100th birthday and her husband, Norman, will be 102 in June. They can remember walking, aged five, over a mile to get to school, and using chalk to write on slates during their lessons. They played ‘the farmer wants a wife’ outside and played with a spinning top indoors. They have had a life that is a world away from that which is experienced by our children now. But to have this couple within our community, as active as they are, enriches us all, and to have them on this page is a fitting way to embark on the year ahead. 3

NEWS Mike Smith, Head of Geography at the Deepings School, was presented with the Most Inspirational Teacher (Secondary) Award at the recent Lincolnshire Education Awards Ceremony at the South Holland Centre. Making sure that Geography is a fun subject to learn has involved Mike in the organisation of field trips to places as diverse as Iceland and Hunstanton and he has been known to bring the rainforest into the classroom with animals from the region courtesy of Zoolab. Rachel Capper, History Teacher and Gifted & Talented Coordinator at the school was a worthy runner up in the category. Rachel Vidler (left), Teacher at Linchfield Community Primary School won the most inspirational Primary School Teacher award, having been nominated by grateful parents whose son’s experience of school was transformed under her care. Cambs Times Rachel was shocked to receive the award saying, ‘I feel like I don’t do anything too out of the ordinary, just try and make the lessons engaging for everyone.’
The lucky winner of the I’d rather be in Deeping Christmas Hamper competition was Jonathan Bowles of Deeping St. James.
The end of the year and the Deepings gets a good spruce up and polish! Pictured below Kim and Andy Parr on Frognall clean-up day. Meanwhile in the Spinney, Market Deeping, Roy Stephenson heads up a group of volunteers (incuding Keith McCelland and Mike Stott pictured) who meet regularly at The Spinney and Rectory Paddock. The Spinney is reserved for the scattering of ashes and recently weeds have been cleared, shrubs planted and wood cleared. The pond has been cleared of overgrown plants, grass and invading bull rushes. It is hoped to erect some staging in the Spring to encourage pond dipping and to provide a quiet place for people to sit and enjoy.
Over the last few months we have been harbouring the Deepings answer to J K Rowling who notoriously penned her tales of Harry Potter in Edinburgh cafes. FEATURE
The Priory Players was first set up as an adult drama group by Tess Blessett with the Revd. Sidney Smith at the Priory Church Hall in 1947. Known as the Priory Church Players until 1972, the group performed short plays at festivals and attended drama courses all over the country as well as performing passion plays and concert pieces for the Church.
“Since being built, the group have performed hundreds of shows on that stage to many local audiences”
At the 1947 Rose and Sweet Pea Show, the first performance was a play called ‘High Treason’ by R F Delderfield. There was a portable stage and the curtains were made out of black-out material from the War. The drama group’s main event during the 50’s and 60’s continued to be the Rose and Sweet Pea Show. The annual subscription to the group was 2/6d. When the first constitution was drawn up in 1954, the Vicar and Church Wardens (Revd. Urian Evans, Mr G Crowson and Mr Allen) were made President and Vice President of the Society. In the early 50’s, a Junior Drama Group was formed to which Tess Blessett was made Producer, their first productions being A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Alice in Wonderland. The children performed their plays on the vicarage lawn. Edna Harper assisted with choreography on these performances accompanied by Miss Checkley on the piano.
The Priory Church Players staged passion and nativity plays, dances and mini concerts to raise money for The World Refugee Fund, The Hungarian Relief Fund and The Vicarage School Room Extension Fund. In the mid-60’s, the group also raised funds to build the permanent stage and proscenium of the current Priory Church Hall. The new stage was officially opened by the Marquis of Exeter. Since being built, the group have performed hundreds of shows on that stage to many local audiences. The monthly dance organised by the Group raised most funds. No alcohol was permitted but they were very popular in the 50’s when a packed Priory hall would listen to Mr Walter Grooby’s Band or Miss Foyle on the piano. Various themes were advertised, Whist Drive & Dance, Dance & Cabaret, Variety Social, Valentine’s Dance, Christmas Dance and a Grand Prize Draw. All events included a few concert pieces by the drama group.

FEATURE In 1959, the drama group organised its first Carnival Dance incorporating a Miss Deeping beauty contest and dance held at the Church Hall. Lady entrants had their ankles judged followed by a Knobbly Knees competition for the men. The beauty contest winner was then crowned at the Rose and Sweet Pea Show. This proved a very popular and profitable event and, in its third year, two Peterborough United football players were approached to judge the event. The Priory Players’ first pantomime, Cinderella, was performed in 1968 on the newly erected permanent stage at the Priory Church Hall. The first “Old Time Music Hall”, produced by Mrs Blessett, complete with a cockles and mussels stand and a Master of Ceremonies, was performed at the Deepings School in 1971. Passion plays were performed at the Priory Church annually up until the late 1980’s, Rev. Stanley Howarth took the leading role in the final passion play. Greeta Slimmons played Mary on several occasions until she was “overcome”! Since then the Priory Players has flourished performing pantomimes, variety shows and plays every year. The children’s dance group grew so much that a new youth version of the drama group was formed by Kate Redhead and Kerrie Pateman in 1996. The first Priory Youth Players variety show was performed in September 1997 at the Priory Church Hall. Tess Blessett passed away, aged 92 in the summer of 2011 after producing hundreds of shows for the Priory Players for a remarkable 64 years of her life. Wife to Donald Blessett, and mother to five children, Tess devoted her life to running the drama group as well as raising a family. Hundreds of people from the Deepings have taken to the Priory stage
over the years making wonderful lifelong friendships and sharing memories of performances gone by. Some members have even taken to the professional stage. Tess’ children, grand-children and great-grandchildren have all had a go at treading the boards too. Some members stay for one show, others stay for many years. Nowadays, the Priory Players and the Priory Youth Players work together on their shows. Kate Redhead leads the group’s activities with a strong committee of family, friends and parents. The “Priory family” now has over sixty members performing annual pantomimes, variety shows and plays. Volunteers and helpers are always welcome. If you’d like to support the group’s next pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, come along to the Deepings School on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd January 2016, 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are £8, £6 for the Saturday performances and £5 for the Friday evening performance. Booking forms are available from The Deepings School reception, Simon Robinson at The Barber’s Shop (near Terry Wrights Cycles). To contact the Priory Players directly, please email pypdsj@gmail.com or call 07541 849185.

Hungry like the Wolf
Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams ‘Let’s play darts!’ It’s January and Deeping is engulfed in darts fever as Wolfie prepares to take to the oche. Beating all records with his 23rd consecutive year at the Lakeside, Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams is second in the BDO rankings and as the runner up in 2014 he is looking to unseat the favourite, Glen Durrant. No stranger to the title himself, Wolfie has won three times in his career in 2007, 2010 and 2011, a record second only to that of Eric Bristow, five times winner. Home for nine days in early January, Martin enjoys both the venue at Lakeside and the event, going through his practice routines and taking in the atmosphere. Like an extended family there is plenty of banter in the practice room and friendships are formed. Inevitably, tension mounts with the audience, which can number 1,700 with the quarters, semis and finals always a sell out, only a metre away. To the strains of Duran Duran’s ‘Hungry Like the Wolf ‘, Martin takes his place and his fans both here in Deeping and around the world – at the last count he had a 12,500 following on Twitter – hold their breath! His beard leant him the nickname Wolf Man, which evolved into Wolfie, and this has led to a long involvement with the UK Wolf Conservation Trust where he has sponsored a North American Grey, Duma and her sister, Dakota, and now three Arctic Wolves, Sikko and her brothers, Massak and Pukak. Darts players are often distinguished by their nicknames: Ted Hankey, ‘The Count’ for his love of 14
Dracula, Ross ‘The Boss’ Montgomery, boss of his own maintenance firm, Darryl ‘the Dazzler’ Fitton, walking on to Madness’ ‘One Step Beyond’ in sunglasses. When you hear the strains of ‘Who let the Dogs out’ it is because Scotty Dog Mitchell, last year’s victor over Wolfie, is entering the room. From the Netherlands, Co Stompe ‘The Matchstick’ is so named after the green jacket and red woolly hat that he wore on his first appearance at Lakeside, some saying it made him look like a Swan Vesta. Banter? You can almost hear it! Wolfie prefers the labels affectionately applied rather than the manufactured tags that are sometimes used. Born in Sutton in Surrey, Wolfie came to Deeping via Milton Keynes working in IT at Lloyds Bank. He took redundancy in 1995 when he became a professional darts player, having been taught by his cousin to play while still at school. Pub darts have always formed a part of his life and he regrets that many pubs took their dartboards away, replacing them with tables for serving food. It is not easy now to resurrect a pub darts team; the first thing Martin advises is to put the board up and let people get into the sport before forming a team. The longest serving captain of the England team, from 1993-2013, some of the most dramatic games in the history of the BDO have been attributed to Martin. He has been the victim of great comebacks and also of great collapses from winning positions. His 5-4 defeat to Chris Mason in the 1999 World Championship Quarter Finals, having led 4-1 and seen 9 darts match points pass him by in the match, is always mentioned.
In his first World Championship match he was pitted against Phil Nixon; at 50 they were both the oldest players in the tournament, Martin stormed into a 6-0 lead and Nixon came back to level the match. Just when it looked as though Wolfie would be heading for another dramatic defeat, he won all three legs in the final set to take the match to 7-6 and to win the world title, one that he had been chasing for 14 years. Last year he opened the championship with a win over Jan Dekker, setting up a tie with Jim Widmayer and then proceeding to the quarter finals, where he comfortably beat Ross Montgomery. He edged Glen Durrant out at the semi-final stage and with the united chorus of the Deepings behind him he went into the final against Scott Mitchell. Here he was narrowly defeated 7-6 in a deciding set. This year the community is back behind the sofas again…! But when it’s all over at Lakeside, the year is just beginning. On to the Dutch Open and then darts until the end of March and beyond with competitions and exhibitions, attending trade shows to support sponsors. Maybe there will be a trip to his holiday destination of choice, the Maldives. The last match of the year is the Finder Darts Masters in December at Egmond ann Zee. Driven on by a love of the sport, the camaraderie that goes with it and the not inconsiderable prize money, Adams claims there are still some more championship wins in him yet!

HEALTH
2016: Finding Happiness on Your Doorstep with Emma Lannigan Happy New Year! Whether your glass is half full or half empty, finding happiness in our daily life is essential for our wellbeing. Keeping positive after the holidays can also be a struggle especially with messages of: ‘New Year, New Start.’ New fitness, new diet, new health, new resolutions. What if it isn’t new at all? What if you have everything you need for happiness and health already inside of you and just need a helping hand to bring it back in your life? Let’s get started and turn up the brightness, happiness and health all from your Deeping Doorstep.
Writing A busy mind, creates a busy and exhausted body. Invest in a journal (we have some wonderful stores locally who sell these.) Keep a note of at least five positive experiences each day. What made you smile? What did you see or hear that made you laugh? What kindness did you experience? What are you thankful for? Keep focused on the happiness in your words.
Talking There’s no escaping great places locally to catch up with friends to talk. If you have a friend who is feeling a little low, listen and share positive events and news. You’ll be amazed at just how much this will help keep their mind stay focused on what is positive in their life too.
Walking Get out in the fresh air, whatever your ability. In just five minutes of being outside you can enjoy our wonderful local open spaces. Take a walk by the River Welland or round Deeping Lakes. Go slightly further to Dole Woods, Thurlby, Bourne Woods or walk in the grounds of Burghley House. Notice what is around you as you walk. The colour of the sky the shape of the clouds, the feel of the crisp air on your face… And breathe.
Breathing Breathing deeply into your belly button brings your mind and body back into one central place and time.
16
Count from one to six as you breathe in through your nose, then count from one to six as you breathe out through your mouth. Repeat at least three times. Practise this to bring calm into any time of the day.
Giving There is a natural balance in life, just like breathing as above. As you give you naturally open yourself to want to accept and receive anything from attention, company, help, support etc. We have lots of local groups and charities where you could offer your time, and this also includes quality family time and time for you. You will feel more positive, involved and it’s often a great way to meet new people. Just by doing one of these things you will be helping yourself take a step towards reconnecting with you and boosting your daily happiness. With love, happiness and health for 2016 Emma.

Don’t let an injury put an end to your New year’s resolution - is your New year’s resolution to get fitter , lose weight or improve sporting performance?
1. Toe nails should be cut back to the contour/ shape of the toe (and not too short) 2. Footwear should be neither too tight or too loose. 3. Don’t assume that having a number of letters after the name means the person about to treat you is a Registered Chiropodist/Podiatrist. The only check is being registered with the Health Care Professions Council There to protect the public (Online register -http://www.hpc-uk.org/check/ ). 4. Anomalies in the way your feet work can cause back, knee and hip problems. 5. All colour changes in toe nails are not necessarily fungal infectionsget them checked. 6. Ingrowing toe nails can be cured with a minor operation by Qualified Podiatrists. 7. Corns do not have roots like plants, they are caused by pressure. 8. Think about caring for your feet, we all take them for granted.
Whatever your goal, Deeping Osteopaths are qualified to assess your physical wellbeing and can provide expert advice regarding how to avoid and manage injuries and other conditions that may affect training, as well as treating normal aches and pains you may experience when starting a new training regime.

Promoting the well-being of others requires us to understand and address our universal human needs. If you are part of someone’s support network it is essential to undertake an assessment of their circumstances and to take prompt action to minimise any risks to well-being. 1. Improving physical well-being - look out for safety in the home. Hypothermia can be easily missed and will lead to confused behaviour. Malnutrition and dehydration develop over time so will require vigilance and intervention to prevent ill health and improving cognitive well-being 2. Providing daily conversation and mental challenge can make a huge difference to general well-being. 3. Loneliness can lead to social withdrawal and poor health while a positive emotional environment can really enhance well-being so try to avoid harsh words and arguments.

Be more active; whether that means standing up regularly from your seat at work, using stairs instead of the lift or walking up an escalator instead of standing. Small changes to your day can make a long term difference. If you have limited mobility, exercise in a chair. Even moving your feet up and down and straightening your legs intermittently can help muscle strength and circulation. 2. Stretch; this works for sports people and those who are more sedentary. Regular stretching maintains joint mobility and eases muscle pain. 3. Take a deep breath! Think about how fast you breathe especially if you are rushing around. Taking a moment to draw your breath deep into your chest is a good way of relaxing and releasing tension around the neck and shoulders.
Sally Wormall Fitness Classes 1. Avoid processed food and eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. 2. Exercise regularly - something you like, and sometimes outdoors! 3. Find time to relax and have some “me time~” every day. 19
TOP TIPS Amy Hunnings Inspire Dance Take regular exercise - wrap up warm and go for a walk or a play in the park. Join a new activity such as a dance class or sports club and make new friends! Eat a variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables: this will keep the body topped up with a wide range of vitamins and minerals, especially lots of vitamin C in oranges, calcium in milk and iron in green vegetables; See how many different coloured foods you can get on your child’s plate Coughs and sneezes spread diseases. Cover your mouth when you sneeze, wash your hands or use an antibacterial gel to stop germs spreading.
Matt Weston Empire Gym 1. Plan an hour of exercise 3 times a week as a minimum. Do something you enjoy first. In time you will gravitate to other types of exercise and balance your routine as you develop a passion and an interest in it. Don’t be affected by fitness ‘snobs’. Better to do something you enjoy than nothing at all. 2. Plan to remove / plan not to purchase 3 elements of your diet that would traditionally be considered ‘bad’. For example, remove, cheese, bread and sugar. Remember, be strict in the supermarket. 3. Food timing. If you have a large appetite like me, and you love your food, like me, eat your food shortly before or shortly after exercise. This will also mean on your 3 exercise days you can treat yourself a little more, and it may even motivate you to exercise more on your ‘rest’ days.

Marianne Killick Acupuncturist 1. Catch up on sleep: get a few early nights and allow your body and mind to recharge and heal. 2. Eat seasonally: our bodies know what they need at this time of year so salads and cold foods are to be avoided. Hearty warming stews and soups support our digestion and hence our energy. 3. Get out into nature: go for a walk, even if that's just for 10 minutes in your lunch break, reconnect with nature, whether by being in the countryside or admiring the snowdrops, it will still your mind and refresh you.

Katharine of Aragon The annual Katharine of Aragon Festival takes place on 28th-31st January in Peterborough. Katharine, the first wife of Henry VIII is buried in Peterborough Cathedral, following her death at Kimbolton Castle on 7th January 1536. Susan Hibbins looks at our Tudor legacy. Katharine, the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, was born in 1485, and came to England at the age of 16, in 1501. As a young child she had been betrothed to Prince Arthur, first son and heir to Henry VII, and they were married in London and moved to Ludlow Castle on the Welsh border. Sadly, their marriage was a short one, as Arthur died soon after the wedding, leaving Katharine alone in a strange country. After much wrangling over her dowry between her father Ferdinand and Henry VII, Katharine was betrothed to Henry’s second son, Henry; the marriage did not take place until 1509, following Henry VII’s death. Katharine’s first marriage to Arthur was annulled at this time by the Pope. Katharine was crowned Queen of England alongside Henry in a lavish joint coronation celebration in Westminster Abbey. The people took Katharine to their hearts and she and the young Henry VIII were the golden couple of the day. Henry, in complete contrast to his parsimonious and suspicious father, was determined to enjoy establishing a glittering court and spent vast amounts of money doing so. For some years he and Katharine lived a happy married life. In January 1510 Katharine had a daughter, but she was stillborn. Her second child, a boy, was born in 1511 amid great rejoicing, but the child died soon afterwards, and so began the problems that were to sour Katharine and Henry’s marriage. In all she had six children, but only one girl, Mary, survived. Henry became desperate for a legitimate male heir; he had had healthy boys born to his mistresses Bessy Blount and Mary Boleyn, and he became increasingly bitter that Katharine seemed unable to give him the son and heir he needed. Henry’s roving eye now fell on Katharine’s lady-in-waiting, Anne Boleyn, sister to his mistress Mary. He became infatuated with Anne, who at first held him at arm’s length, determined that she would not just be his mistress, but his queen. Henry was determined to marry her, and he asked the 22
Pope to annul his marriage to Katharine, claiming that it was cursed in going against biblical teaching that a man should not marry his brother’s widow – the reason, it seemed to him, why they had not had a son. The Pope refused, afraid of angering Katharine’s nephew, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and the arguments dragged on for seven long years. Katharine herself refused to give in to Henry’s request for a divorce, insisting that her marriage to Arthur had never been consummated. By now Anne was pregnant with Henry’s child and the couple were married in secret in 1533. Tired of wrangling, Henry decided on a momentous step: he rejected the power of the Pope and passed the Act of Supremacy, declaring that he was head of the English Church instead. He then appointed Thomas Cranmer as Archbishop of Canterbury, who annulled Henry and Katharine’s marriage. Katharine was forced to leave the court and made to renounce her title as Queen; she became known as the Princess Dowager of Wales, a title she refused to accept until the end of her life. She lived in a series of damp and unhealthy castles and manors, with reduced numbers of servants, and was also separated from her daughter Mary, which was a great grief to them both. Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen in Katharine’s place, but she was heartily disliked in many quarters – she and Henry had a stormy marriage – and there was still great sympathy for Katharine. Katharine was buried in Peterborough Abbey – then a monastery – thought to be the most suitable place on grounds of cost. Interestingly, Anne was beheaded only 19 weeks after Katharine’s death; she too had failed to provide Henry with a male heir, and he had already begun to court his third wife, Jane Seymour. HUGH WADE
‘Everything today is thoroughly modern, Bands are getting jazzier, everything today is starting to go, Cars are getting snazzier, Men say its criminal what women will do! What they’re forgetting is this is 1922!’ The roaring twenties, an era of excitement and change as the world emerged from the trauma of the First World War. One of Deepings sons was in the right place to take full advantage of the social and cultural changes of the decade. Hugh Wade, third son of Solicitor, Richard Wade of The Park, Market Deeping now known as Wade House had had the distinction of winning the prize for the best musical composition at Marlborough College. This fuelled his enthusiasm to become a composer and he went on to study at the Royal College of Dramatic Art (RADA). At the tender age of just 18 he composed the words and music to ‘When the love bird leaves the nest’ which was sung by the handsome Danish crooner, Carl Brisson and this effectively made Hugh Wade’s name. His songs were sung by the leading singers of the day and broadcast by the foremost dance bands; one of the biggest hits being ‘When I met Sally’ and another, ‘Rosalie‘. Charlie Kunz bandleader and pianist, resident of one of London’s hot night spots frequented by Barbara Cartland, Chez Henri in Long Acre, recorded ’I’m tired of waiting for you’ by Hugh Wade and the esteemed Reg Batten, member, violinist and sometimes leader of the Savoy Orpheans. It was a piece highly evocative of this era.

HUGH WADE
Working in conjunction with lyric writers one of Wades outstanding successes was ‘Time May Change’ and ‘Souvenir de Paris’ also achieved great popularity. With Collie Knox, Daily Mail columnist remembered for his patriotic wartime journalism, Wade wrote ‘When the Swallows fly home.‘ Writing music for theatrical productions he was one of a number of British Composers to be sent to Hollywood in 1929 by Bert Feldman, well-known London music publisher, where he wrote songs for the new ‘talkie’ productions from Warner Bros. Here he earnt the handsome sum of between £150- £200 per week. Two of the songs that he wrote for the talkies were ‘Now you’re singing a new song’ and ‘One night in May.’ He enjoyed international repute as a brilliant pianist especially in syncopation as well as a composer. He became part of the international music scene and was a particular favourite in Paris. In London he was a popular figure with leading stage and radio celebrities performing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, The Duke of York Theatre, The Alhambra and The Comedy Theatre. In his obituary it was made clear that while he enjoyed travel and the high life, it was the quietude and the tranquil setting of the home he loved, the charming greystone residence and beautiful grounds at the Park, Market Deeping (above), that inspired his work. Hugh Wade died unmarried at the height of his career aged just 41 in 1949 at Peterborough Hospital where he had received visits from several personalities from stage and screen including Elsie and Doris Waters and Donald Peers.

EDUCATION
Your Future, Their Future The future of teacher training is right here in the Deepings! Make eyes widen and horizons broaden The national ‘Get into Teaching’ campaign invites us to consider what a good teacher makes. As well as making eyes widen and horizons broader, here in the Deepings we are making a lot of schools across the south of the county very happy by operating a Teacher Training Centre from The Deepings School. The class of 2016-17 will be the fourth cohort through their training programme but the first for whom the Deepings team will be an official awarding body and able to assess and validate Qualified Teacher Status. Nationally, teacher recruitment is becoming more and more of a challenge and this is magnified in sparsely populated rural and coastal settings. The shortage of high quality staff at both primary and secondary level is, to a large extent, due to our lack of proximity to universities; the nearest being over an hour away in every direction. Only last month, head teachers warned us that schools in England were facing a deepening problem in recruiting enough teachers. The National Association of Head Teachers said 59% of schools advertising for teachers “struggled” to get applicants and a further 20% failed completely to appoint anyone. This isn’t the picture we want, which makes the fact that we can train to teach on our doorstep even more important to the local community. Now we can choose the very best talent and develop them into the best teachers for our children.
Could this be you? The whole point is to keep our local talent in our local schools and if you are a graduate you could be starting teacher training in September. There are places available for most secondary subjects and all
love the fact that there is so much hands on involvement, everything I learn feels totally relevant.” Katie Thorndike has come to the Programme following a career change, clearly relishing the opportunity that she has been given so close to home, she has been appointed to serve her newly qualified teacher role at the School to start in September.
Once a teacher…
age groups of primary. All you need is your degree, a passion for teaching and a wish to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. “I have been at the Deepings School for over 23 years, my children grew up here, went to school here and I am completely invested in the Deepings community” Assistant Headteacher, Nikki Benjamin is the Teacher Training Director and likes to think of herself as, ‘a bit like Alex Ferguson,’ bringing the best staff through their own training programme. She has been at The Deepings School since 1992 and admits that the sporting likeness stops there! Her Teacher Training Deputy, Rachel Capper, was trained at The Deepings School though and the class of 2014 saw Gareth Baker, an outstanding teacher of Geography, employed by the school and already promoted to a pastoral position. Gareth said, “I really do feel that the School here are concerned for my future progression; I feel totally supported in my role.“ Chloe Barratt is a current trainee and due to qualify as an English teacher in July. She is enjoying the programme which sees trainees attending their core training every Monday and then applying what they have learned, training on-the-job in our schools, under the watchful eyes of their mentors for the rest of the week. She says “I
If you are already a qualified teacher but have been out of the classroom for a while, The Deepings School is working hard to get you back into the classroom too. They have been successful in their bid to become just one of 40 schools in the country to pilot the national programme, ‘Supporting Returning Teachers.’ This is a bespoke programme, personalised to develop the skills and confidence of teachers who may have been out of the classroom for a number of years. Funded by the Department for Education, it is free to returning secondary teachers in Maths, English, Geography, History, Computer Science, MFL and Physics.
Train to Teach Nikki is holding a ‘Train to Teach’ event in The Deepings School Conference Centre on Tuesday 19th January 6.30-8pm. She will be giving a short presentation about the programme and will then be available to answer any questions. She is also happy to provide support and guidance on the application process and offer some school experience for those who just want a taste of how life as a teacher feels.

what’s on ‘Pride, Prejudice and Peterborough – the city in the Georgian Age’ Until May 2016 The current Museum building, the grand townhouse of city magistrate Thomas Cooke, is 200 years old in 2016. What was Peterborough like at the time when that house was built? This exhibition looks at the city during the Georgian period using original objects from the Museum’s collections, including rarely seen period costume. Find out what daily life was like here at the time of Jane Austen, some of the personalities and key events in the story of Peterborough at that time, and the fascinating story of how the modern provision of medical care in the city also started in 1816.
