Welcome
Loyalty and diligence are not often words that you hear bandied about on the ten o’clock news – they are old-fashioned values that are highly prized nonetheless. For Mickey Culff, Watch Manager at Market Deeping Fire Station, they have been the watchwords of his thirty-year career at the station. For him putting others first and keeping a cool head under pressure have been all in a day’s work, and all of those seeing him presented with a fireman’s axe on an oak board on his retirement could not fail to have been moved. Now the team, without Mickey, will continue to take up the cudgels on our behalf, and they do so with our heartfelt gratitude. Judy Stevens

If you see the crafters from Riverside Beads looking particularly chilled then it is because they have just returned from retreat at Molecey Mill. Priory Church
We tend to think of our little corner of England as being a quiet place where not much happens nor has ever happened, where no one of much significance (with one or two exceptions) has lived and which history has mostly bypassed. However, for much of the medieval period, the 11th-16th centuries, our region and the people who lived here were at the centre of local and national government and events. One such local resident was Lady Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond and Derby and mother to King Henry VII. Although born in Bletsoe in Bedfordshire, Margaret spent much of her early life in her mother’s castle at Maxey. Margaret is often depicted as scheming, manipulative and avaricious. However, to those who formed part of her extended circle of friends and family she was very supportive, particularly in terms of patronage. A local man who benefited from her patronage was Robert Fayrfax, a younger son of a family who lived in Deeping Gate in a house known as Fairfax Hall on the site of the current Fairfax House in Riverside.
Margaret Beauchamp
The Fayrfax family were gentry rather than nobility. They are first recorded in Deeping Gate in the 1301 tax assessment when Robert Fayrfax is assessed as owing 3s 10.25d. In the 14th century the sum represented 15 days’ pay for a skilled tradesman or nearly a month’s wage for a labourer. This tax assessment was for a fifteenth of a person’s movable property. This means that Robert owned things like robes, pans, pots and beds as well as possibly livestock and crops to the value of 57s. The assessment didn’t include land and houses. By the standards of the time, Robert Fayrfax was a wealthy man.
The family not only held (rented) property in Deeping Gate but also Yardley Hastings, Whissendine, in Grendon, and Panton, a village north of Lincoln. This shows that they were people of standing. This is reflected in the appointment, in 1461, of William Fayrfax to the post of High Sheriff of Northamptonshire. At the time this was much more than the ceremonial role it is today. The High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county which makes the appointment somewhat unusual as William had, as a man in his early 20s, been accused (with others) of affray in Deeping. He held other civic posts, as was expected of a man of continued >

FEATURE his standing. He served on commissions looking into sewers and drains and later, in 1474-5 as a Justice of the Peace in Kesteven. He had many important contacts, either through marriage (his brother-in-law was MP for Northamptonshire) or through possible business contacts. For example, William Browne of Stamford (founder of Browne’s Hospital) and his wife were godparents to three of the Fayrfax children. As one of the pre-eminent men in the immediate area, it is little wonder that in about 1445, when the recently widowed Margaret, Duchess of Somerset moved into Maxey castle with her infant daughter, the Fayrfax family should become part of their circle of friends. Margaret wasn’t new to widowhood. John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, had been her second husband. Her first, Oliver St John, left her with five children who all became part of the household at Maxey. They provided a happy family in which Margaret Beaufort was to spend her childhood. The family would increase in 1447, when Margaret married her third husband, Lionel, Lord Welles, with whom she had another son. History has left us a document which gives a wonderful insight into the intertwined lives of the Fayrfax family at Deeping Gate and their more illustrious neighbours at Maxey. Fragments of a prayer book known as the Fairfax Book of Hours is housed in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. As with many books of its type and period it lists family births. Not only are the dates, places and in some cases the hour of birth of the Fayrfax children recorded but also details of their baptism. This gives us an intimate picture of family life at Fayrfax Hall and the circle in which the family moved. In total, William Fayrfax fathered 14 children, two girls by his first wife Elena (or Eleanor) and 12 by Agnes his second wife. There may have been other children lost in infancy. At the time the infant mortality rate was 50% and childbirth was the biggest killer of women. The Book of Hours tells us that Margaret Beauchamp was not only godmother to William and Elena’s first daughter but also named the baby. She may well have been present at the birth, although as the only 20

Fayrfax child to be born in Stamford the Duchess may have been absent. It was the custom at the time for the first daughter to be named after her mother and sons after their father. The Duchess of Somerset went against tradition in choosing her own name for the Fayrfax first-born, although Margaret was also the name of the baby’s paternal grandmother. Margaret Fayrfax was baptised in St George’s Church in Stamford by the Abbot of Peterborough. One of her godmothers was Edith St John, Margaret’s daughter. The Duchess also named one of the Fayrfax sons, Charles who was born in November 1468 in Deeping Gate and baptised in the Priory Church of St James, East Deeping by the Abbot of Bourne. His godmother was Elizabeth St John, granddaughter of the Duchess. Some Fayrfax children were baptised in St Peter’s Church, Maxey. The most prominent member of the Fayrfax family was another Robert. Born in Deeping Gate on 23 April 1464, he was also baptised in the church of St James, East continued >

It is also possible that by 1487 Robert was a member of Margaret Beaufort’s Chapel at Collyweston. At the time there was a great interchange of musical personnel between other institutions further afield such as Higham Ferrers, Tattershall College, Winchester College, London Charterhouse and the Chapel Royal.

Deeping and numbered the Rector of Peakirk as one of his godfathers. Robert had a distinguished musical career. We know little about his early years but it is possible that he sang as a boy in the Lady Chapel choir of Peterborough Abbey, a position which may have been secured through the family’s close relationship with the Abbot.
Fairfax House
By 1497, Robert was a member of the Chapel Royal and served in a number of chapels in various places. Over the years, he advanced in seniority as he sang at various state occasions such as the funeral of Edmund son of Henry VII in 1500, that of Henry’s wife Elizabeth of York in 1503 and of the King himself in 1509. As a composer, Fayrfax certainly contributed to the musical life of Margaret Beaufort’s chapel. On 4 December 1504 he received a payment from the countess’ cofferer, most probably for musical duties, and on 11 August 1507, he received a payment of 6s. 8d. from the Treasurer of the Chamber of Margaret’s household, this time for the new mass, ‘O Bone Jesu’. Robert’s career flourished under Henry VIII to whom he was no doubt introduced by the King’s grandmother. Robert’s service to Henry VIII culminated in 1520 when he led the Chapel Royal to the Field of the 22
Browne’s Hospital, Stamford
Cloth of Gold meeting with King Francis I of France. Robert died a year later, possibly in St Albans, where a funeral brass commemorating him and his wife Agnes survived into the 17th century. The image shows a modern reproduction. Robert Fayrfax is considered to have been a major impact on the development of Renaissance music and to have influenced later composers such as Tavener and Tallis. We can count him as one of our own. Sadly, there is no trace of the house that Robert, his siblings and Margaret Beaufort knew as the current Fairfax House dates to the late 17th or early 18th century.

Iain Toombs - Wildlife Photographer Deeping landscaper Iain Toombs has made quite a name for himself over the years as an avid wildlife photographer. His increasingly popular Deeping Nature Watch Facebook group reveals the varied scope of his work, from capturing images of Kingfishers feeding, Common Lizards basking in the sun, to Bank Voles swimming and a family of Badgers foraging for food.
the enormous amount of wildlife that frequents their land. They often don’t have the time to sit for hours on end, often well into the night, to see what’s living there.
Bank Vole with reflection
Raised in a fishing, hunting and hiking family, Iain spent a great deal Kingfisher juggling pike of his childhood outdoors which proved hugely impactful upon his life. ‘I was never at home as a teenager, preferring to spend whole weekends camping out in local woods or sat by a lake, angling. That’s where my love of wildlife grew. I very quickly learned that all manner of animals appear out of nowhere when you’re quiet and still. In turn I learned that being patient brings its rewards; most of the time!’ ‘I’ve always had an interest in photography, eventually studying it at college in the hope of becoming a photojournalist. Luckily, I landed a position on Angling Times in Peterborough which saw me accompany the stories I wrote with photographs; a great deal of which were taken in studio conditions. ‘That had me thinking: I wonder if I could apply the same “studio-style” technique to create outdoor scenes and tempt wildlife into them to obtain decent images. And not being one to turn down a challenge I set to work on the project and have never looked back since. ‘I owe a great deal to local landowners who have kindly allowed me to build temporary hides on their land where I’ve noticed animal tracks or seen activity through binoculars. It’s lovely that the owners are genuinely interested in seeing
‘Currently I have five hides in operation, each purposely built for specific times of day, times of the year and differing species. As an example, one hide is half below ground so I can sit with my eye and camera at ground level to watch a family of Badgers. That really is an incredible experience especially when they come to feed an arm’s length away.
‘My other hides are designed for Otters, Ducks, general farmland birds/ mammals and the final one has a raised shallow pool where I can photograph birds drinking and capture their reflection while doing so. ‘I do like to try to include water in some form in my images. I find it gives the photos extra impact, especially if the animal isn’t normally associated with water. In fact, one shot I captured of a Moorhen diving for food was entered in to this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. I’ve never been one for competitions but was persuaded to enter with that image. It made it through to the final stage, meaning it had reached the top-100 list – not bad considering there were over 58,000 entries. ‘In all honesty, though, the ultimate reward is the peace, tranquillity, the opportunity to switch off and constantly to learn. I can happily sit for hours on end just waiting, watching and listening as you never know what may turn up, especially if I’ve been tempting animals into the hide with seed, fruit, dog biscuits, leftover chicken carcass or even fresh roadkill on a couple of occasions. Nothing is ever wasted in the animal world, so a pigeon killed by a car can be the next meal for a scavenging mammal or raptor. In fact, a roadside pigeon accounted for my favourite image of a Sparrow hawk which found it too tempting to refuse. ‘It is an amazing hobby that can be so incredibly relaxing. But the downside is the time involved, and thankfully I have an incredibly understanding and patient wife. One photo captured in the blink of an eye can take weeks of planning and research, weeks of feeding followed by countless hours waiting for the right moment to squeeze the button and fire a flash.’ 25

Martin Bond, Head of Football at Deeping Rangers Football Club, has been absolutely delighted the way things have materialised in his first full season in his new role after stepping out of the dugout after eight years as First Team coach. It became very apparent to him that the club needed to build a robust and transparent ‘Player Pathway’ that all associated with the club would buy into and support. He recognised within the Senior Section that there was a ‘gaping hole’ between the talented U18’s Midweek Team and the First Team which needed addressing. Additionally, there was also a real need to galvanise the Senior Section, and as importantly to galvanise the Junior & Youth Sections with the Senior Section, enabling them to understand that they really are a massive and crucial part of the club in relation to player development.
The photograph shows Martin’s Team responsible for the ‘Player Pathway’ by following ‘The Deeping Rangers Way’: Back Row l-r: Alex Harper - Development Squad Manager, Dan French – First Team Manager, Matty Atkins – Reserve Team Manager and Ash Baines – U18 Midweek Manager. Front Row l-r: Dan Ingram – Head of Junior Development, Martin Bond - Head of Football and Head of Youth Development– Graham Fielding.
He got to work on introducing a Development Squad and reintroducing a Reserve Team, and both teams were entered into the Peterborough League at Division 5 and Division 1 respectively. He says, ‘This will enable young players to make the steps from Youth football into men’s football more manageable.’ He states, ‘Deeping Rangers FC is a club for the local community and I want to ensure that every player has the best experience and opportunities possible to allow them to progress through the “Player Pathway” by following it “The Deeping Rangers Way”. I now have in place a group of like-minded individuals who are communicating regularly, and managing and coaching as a team to develop our own players within DRFC. “The Player Pathway” package I have produced has transparent steps which allow all players/ parents from the early years to map out a player’s potential route on their footballing journey through DRFC.’ This season has showed a positive progression: U18’s Midweek – Thurlow Nunn League Runners Up and County Cup Champions. Development Squad – Peterborough League Division 5 Runners Up enabling promotion, which it has been confirmed will be to Peterborough League Division 3. Reserves – Peterborough League Division 1 Runners Up enabling promotion to the Peterborough Premier League Division, plus they were crowned Peterborough League Senior Cup Champions. First Team – Finished 5th in the inaugural season of the United Counties League, North Division.
The fruits of the ‘Player Pathway’ have already started to blossom with at least three young players already having played this season for all four sides in the Senior Section. Added to this, the Junior & Youth section sides won various league and cup trophy competitions and also put on a magnificent Summer Tournament which saw almost 600 youngsters having a great time over a weekend. Additionally, the really popular annual Summer School for the Minis which lasts for four Saturdays is just around the corner. ‘The Board and I as a Director of DRFC work very hard to invest in offering quality facilities, equipment and qualified coaches, allowing the foundations to be in place for a player’s individual development.’ ‘It’s been an absolute delight recently to see existing and past Senior Section players now becoming coaches at DRFC at the mini and junior levels. They have introduced their children to the “beautiful game” at DRFC to what is to all intents and purposes a family and club for the local community. These players have had a positive footballing journey at DRFC and are now committed to putting something back into the club.’ He continues, ‘We are privileged to have some fantastic volunteers (we could do with more), individual and company based sponsors, parents, qualified managers and coaches and supporters who are all supporting the players and teams to reach their goals. I’m very grateful to them all and can’t thank them enough, and I’m looking forward to everybody involved with DRFC taking the players and the club forward next season.’ 27

RAY PAWLETT
Faster If you ever want to try looking at the world from a different viewpoint, the writings of Carlos Casteneda might be a good place to take a look. In his books he describes an apprenticeship with a South American Shaman, or holy man, called Don Juan. Don Juan talks a lot about being more aware of the world that we live in. It’s fascinating stuff! One of his ideas is the need to build up our ‘internal speed’ so that we can perceive more of this wonderful world that we live in. Just imagine that you are driving at full tilt along a straight road. Then you drive back down the same road at a much slower speed. You realise that there were many branches and junctions that you didn’t see when you were going too fast. Your internal speed was insufficient when you were going too fast to perceive that there were junctions in the road. A few years ago, I was driving by a hospital in Cambridge. A guy came driving out of the hospital. He hadn’t seen me and nearly drove into me. Without an emergency stop from me, there would certainly have been an accident. He didn’t notice – just drove on. A part of me was just about to lean on my car horn and shout at him to ‘watch where you are going’. Then my internal speed kicked in. I realised that there were choices. I thought to myself that he could have just had an awful diagnosis or been watching someone die. Anyway, who would it serve to get
wound up by his bad driving? If he didn’t notice me when he nearly hit me then he probably wouldn’t now. If my ‘internal speed’ was not high enough, I would not have even thought about possibilities because I would not have seen them. I would have just gone straight into being angry with the guy and been upset as a result of it. So I let it go and felt all the better for it. Perhaps a more scientific way of speaking would be to say that if your nervous system is going at full tilt, then you will miss a lot. So, in order to increase our internal speed and perceive more in our worlds, we need to slow down our nervous systems. Things like meditation, Tai Chi, Qigong, being in nature and many others have been tried and tested over millennia and have been shown to do exactly that. This is a part of the psychological wellbeing that these arts and lifestyles create. When we find this wellbeing, our perception of the world improves and we realise that we have choices rather than falling headlong from one ‘event’ to the other. We feel better in ourselves and more present in the moment. If you would like to find out more, please contact me on 07413 620344, mail ray@ki-ways.co.uk or find me on Facebook under Ki-Ways. 37

WE HAVE A WEDDING LICENCE, SO WE CAN ALSO OFFER CIVIL CEREMONIES
JEWELLERY
Value beyond worth The meaning behind the Queen’s jewels One of the abiding memories of the Platinum Jubilee weekend was the sight of Her Majesty appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in a colour-blocked green ensemble with matching hat and a black mourning hat pin which was centre stage. It was her way of ensuring that her beloved ‘strength and stay’ Prince Philip was with her on this most auspicious of occasions. From a treasure trove of 300 pieces of jewellery and 98 brooches, the Queen is well known for choosing an appropriate brooch to reflect the mood of every occasion. For Trooping the Colour she wore the Brigade of Guards brooch she always wears for the ceremony. It positively glittered on her dusky dove-blue Charmelaine wool dress. It had once belonged to the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary, and combines the badges of five regiments of Britain and the Commonwealth; Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards, who take it in turns to troop their colours for the Queen each year. These symbols are encased in an oval frame with the words ’Quinque Juncta in Uno’ and atop is a crown.
When the Queen made her now famous ‘We will meet again’ speech during the lockdown when she appealed directly to the emotional health of the British public in a most uncharacteristic way, she choose to wear a turquoise and pearl brooch that had also been given to her Grandmother, Queen Mary. This had been presented to Mary of Teck on the day of her wedding to the Duke of York (later George V ) by her in-laws. Did the Queen make this choice to symbolise the qualities of endurance and loyalty, George and Mary having valiantly survived the First World War, or was it that Turquoise is known for its healing properties; good fortune, protection and hope? JEWELLERY
Trios from a selection at Market Deeping Antiques Much has been written about the poignant sight of the Queen sitting alone in a pew in the Chapel of St George, Windsor at the Funeral of Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years. On her black dress coat the Queen wore the Richmond brooch which she inherited from her Grandmother, Queen Mary in 1953. Pearls and diamonds set in silver and gold, the brooch was crafted in Bond Street by Hunt & Roskell. It had been a wedding gift to George and Mary when they married in 1893, the couple having lived in White Lodge House in the borough of Richmond. Later when the Queen attended the thanksgiving service for Prince Philip she not only wore a dark green coat in Edinburgh Green in a tribute to his title, the Duke of Scarab Brooch Edinburgh, but she wore the Scarab brooch that Philip had given her in 1966. A favourite choice for many important occasions and often for the televising of the 40
Christmas broadcast, the brooch, also known as the Grima Ruby Brooch, was made by EnglishItalian jeweller, Andrew Grima. One of the few modern pieces added to the royal collection, the brooch is crafted from recycled rubies set within a sunburst frame and surrounded by smaller rubies crafted as flower buds. Cushion from a selection at Market Deeping Antiques And back to that scene of the balcony, the Queen wore a bow brooch, one of a set of three created for Queen Victoria by Garrods in the 1850s using diamonds already part of the collection. Thought to be worth £120,000, it was added to the Royal Collection and is passed from monarch to monarch. In her carefully curated balcony statement confined to the heirs to the throne the choice of brooch, as it so often does, provided a graphic and symbolic reference.

NENE VALLEY RAILWAY
Nene Valley Railway, Your local Heritage Railway by Shirley Knight I have just returned from a week’s holiday in Devon, where we took a ride on the Dartmouth Steam Railway (DSR) which runs for about seven miles along the wonderful coast, between Paignton and Kingswear.
a volunteer with NVR for four years, starting out training in the signal box, and now serving in the bar on the carriages. I am also a member of the Volunteer Liaison Group which coordinates recruitment, induction and support for volunteers.
The line stops at Kingswear, on the opposite side of the river Dart to Dartmouth, because when Brunel commissioned the building of the line, his plan was to carry it from the east side of the river to a station on the west side, beside the town, by a bridge, but the local people objected and it was never built. He had already had the station on the Dartmouth side constructed, so there it stands, a railway station with no line! It is now a restaurant/bar. Travelling on the railway got me to thinking about our local heritage railway, Nene Valley Railway, and here I have to confess a special interest. I have been
As I rode the line from Kingswear and back, I made some comparisons in my mind of the two railways to illuminate the different experience provided by the two. DSR is a private company and is run almost entirely by paid staff. NVR is a registered charity, heritage railway and museum, run, on the other hand, almost entirely by volunteers. DSR is about seven miles in length; NVR is 7.5 miles in length. DSR has four stations: Kingswear, Churston, Goodrington Sands and Paignton; and a platform at Greenway Halt for
access to the former holiday home of Agatha Christie. NVR has five stations: Wansford, Yarwell, which is to the west of Wansford and accessed through a tunnel, Overton for Ferry Meadows, Orton Mere, and Peterborough Nene Valley, beside the river, and gives access to the city centre. Previously it was possible to get on and off at all the DSR stations, but travel at present is non-stop between Kingswear and Paignton. Currently at NVR the train stops usually at all stations. At DSR a ticket enables single or return journey once; at NVR a Rover ticket can be purchased which enables the passenger to get on and off as many times as they can fit in the day’s timetable! DSR has one tunnel at Greenway, 495 yards long; NVR has Wansford tunnel, 616 yards long. DSR has three viaducts. OK, NVR has none of those! Not surprisingly given the landscape! DSR has an continued >

NENE VALLEY RAILWAY impressive collection of locomotives and carriages. NVR has a more modest collection but a particular feature of it is that as well as locomotives and coaches from British railway history it has rolling stock from across Europe, from Belgian and French coaches, to Polish and Swedish engines, to a Swedish railcar. And, of course, Thomas, which used to work at the British Sugar Corporation site in Peterborough, and was formally named Thomas by Rev. W. Awdry, the creator of the stories about various engines, including Thomas the Tank engine. Of course, the DSR is in a very beautiful area visited by many tourists. NVR is, however, also set in an attractive landscape. It offers access to the river where you can watch the Signaller operating the box at Wansford while the trains pass over the river and bridge, to various walks through the countryside, and also to the city of Peterborough, with its impressive
44
cathedral. You can also see other locomotives not currently running and can visit the viewing area to look at the engineering shed where the engines are restored and fixed. There is a static engine, Miniature Railway, shop, bookshop, Garden Railway, Model Railway and a children’s play area. There is also a lovely café serving breakfasts and hot and cold snacks and homemade cakes But, finally, what struck me particularly about the two railways is this. NVR, in my view, creates a wonderful recreation of the experience of travelling on the railways 40 or 50 years ago. It has locomotives and carriages of a similar era to that

at DSR, but it enriches this experience by the presence of its volunteer staff. It has the essential footplate crew and guards, and signallers, but also the platform staff, porters, ticket collectors, and station staff who are dressed in their smart uniforms. All enthusiastic about supporting and enabling the railway to operate, and provide a welcoming and friendly response to all visitors. This is what makes me proud to be part of Nene Valley Railway. So for an authentic steam train day out visit Nene Valley. Or consider volunteering. This offers the opportunity to learn a new skill, make new friends and being part of a team enables our railway heritage to be maintained for future generations. There will be a role that is suitable for you whatever your age and fitness level. Interested? Email volunteers@nvr.org.uk Shirley Knights on behalf of the Volunteer Liaison Group. Twenty years ago, some woods in Northamptonshire were famed as one of the (if not THE) best site in Britain for seeing one of our most elusive, biggest and beautiful butterflies. A visit to Femyn Wood in late June or July, on a hot, sunny day, would see carnage on the tracks. Banana skins would litter the paths at strategic points. Dog poo left by irresponsible owners, usually to the annoyance of fellow footpath users, suddenly has flocks of grown men and women queuing to lie next to the smelly stuff! Their quarry? The amazing Purple Emperor. Largely treetop dwelling, males come down to tracks to drink salts, usually in the middle of the morning. These salts can also be found in rotting banana skins and unfortunately, in animal excrement! The Purple Emperor is our largest butterfly, with dark upper wings and orange, white and greys underneath. The dark wings of the males transform in certain lights to a deep purple-blue. In the past few decades, they appear to have had something of a range Silver washed Fritilary
Take a harder look on thistles and other plants in these woodland clearings, and you might find the small and subtle White-letter Hairstreak. Blackthorn bushes also attract Black Hairstreaks, which are much rarer, and we are very much in the heart of their range in Britain. Both butterflies are small and brown when their wings are closed with orange and black on the wing edges. Away from woodlands, Barnack Hills and Holes is at its absolute pomp in July. Not only is it a sea of long grass and stunning flowers, including towering orchids, but it’s also awash with butterflies and dayflying moths.
Common Blue expansion and we are now lucky enough to have them very close to home. As mentioned, though, they are notoriously difficult to see. Hot, sunny days are the best, in late June through to early August, but get to the wood too late and they will all be high up in the trees. Patience and luck are needed but they are certainly worth the effort. The best sites, near to the Deepings, are Castor Hanglands and woodlands close to Helpston. Although they are easiest to find when they come to the ground, if none are down low, then check up tree level hight, as they can still spotted due to their large size. White Admiral is another species to keep an eye out for when visiting these woods. Indeed, they might even trick you into thinking you have found a Purple Emperor, as they are similarly patterned but slightly smaller and white out the famous purple sheen. They are also much more

Barnack is a great place for a family walk and a great way to introduce butterflies to kids. Marbled Whites are widespread and distinctive black and white butterflies, whilst rarer and localised Chalkhill Blue adds a splash of colour, as they flutter through the grassland. So why am I waxing lyrical about butterflies this month? Well, dear reader, the Big Butterfly count is organised by the Butterfly Conservation charity and is held every year as a citizen science survey. The aim is to improve our understanding of how populations of butterflies are doing across the country. Unlike Purple Emperors, most butterflies are not faring well, and it is well publicised that without pollinators, humans will not survive, so these surveys matter. With a greater insight as to what is happening to our butterflies, we can help with habitat restoration and influence government policy (hopefully!), on tackling farming strategies and chemicals they might use, that kill our pollinators. As well as taking part in the count, we can all do something at home in our gardens, if we are lucky

Words and Pictures by William Bowell enough to have one. At the very least, leaving a patch of your backyard to ‘go wild’, will help all wildlife, not just butterflies. But to really help butterflies, this autumn or next spring, why not set a wildflower meadow? You can buy all sorts of wildflower meadow mixes in local garden centres these days but a word of warning, they are not always naturalised plants; non-native plants have much fewer uses for our own native wildlife. So, a little research is needed before you plant up but the beauty of them is they need very little maintenance! Just mow twice a year and remove any invasive weeds that might crowd the wildflowers, but even that isn’t a must! We are very fortunate to have such great places for butterflies in our area and by opening our gardens
to wildlife, we can make corridors for them to pass through and thrive in! Happy Butterfly counting! This year’s count is between 15th July and 7th August. Simply pick a spot and count butterflies seen for 15 minutes. Submit your findings and job done! Find out more on https://bigbutterflycount.butterflyconservation.org/ Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.

5 easy steps and benefits to foraging wild foods with children with Hannah Pattison
Summer is the perfect time of year to start venturing outdoors with your children, containers at the ready, to collect free edible plants! There are wild leaves, flowers, fruits and even roots waiting to be harvested from your very own garden or just a short walk from your home, here in Deeping. There’s a few straightforward rules to keep yourselves safe whilst also respecting wildlife; once you know these, it opens up a whole world of possibilities. From stinging nettle crisps to elderflower cordial, wild garlic pesto to the more widely known recipes for blackberries – there’s so many free, fun, experiments and nutritious snacks (even meals) to be created with your family!
Begin at the back door It’s been such a freeing revelation to start to see the dandelions not as an eyesore to be weeded, but as a yummy, endless free ingredient! We’ve tried turning the flowers into dandelion fritters, dandelion cordial and dandelion honey, making sure still to leave plenty for the bees! Cordial was particularly easy to make and really refreshing, tasting really fruity and not like the playground sayings would have you think! What’s more, if you’re anything like me and don’t have as much time to grow veg with your children as you’d like to, this is a wonderful alternative. You can get to know what edible plants regularly crop up in your garden. One of the free plant apps can also be really handy and we spent a fun and educational hour using it to ID the ‘weeds’ in our ‘no mow May’ lawn. We were amazed that more than a few were edible; goose grass (aka ‘sticky willy’) infused water was a particular hit here!
Start with what you already know What do you find easy to identify and plentiful where you are? For my family that memorable first food we ever foraged was the ever-abundant and easily recognisable stinging nettles! My daughter was aged two at the time and we walked along from the grandparents’ house to the side of a cycle track away from car fumes, all set with bags and gloves. Common sense dictated to stay away from areas where dogs may have been, of course. It felt so natural to stop and squat to pick a few new nettle leaves every few metres. Once our bags were full we googled how to turn our harvest into a quick and simple nettle pesto to have with pasta for lunch! 48
Turn a local walk into a snack walk Many children (and adults) will respond with more enthusiasm to a suggestion to hunt for some food rather than ‘go for a walk’. For example, hunting for foraged fruit for dessert can be really motivating for both children and adults – with some stretching, balancing and close encounters with nature thrown in for good measure along the way! Foraging is a natural way to connect to our local environment, gain respect for our food and get to know the seasonal changes in our area, which is all great news for our physical and mental health.
Try ‘flower tea’ Possibly one of the easiest ways to get children hooked is a step up from the pretend tea of the mud kitchen, to making actual tea that everyone can actually enjoy! Some ingredients from our back garden which my daughters loves combining in different ways are dandelion leaves and flowers, nettle leaves, rose petals, daisies, clover, lavender, elderflower and ‘sticky willy’ alongside the herbs (mint, rosemary etc.) we have. Pop in a mug with hot water, infuse for a few minutes, sit back and enjoy the combined flavours, colours and health benefits of the different ingredients.
Arrange a foraging play date with other families This has provided great memories over the years. There’s a few Facebook groups, Instagram influencers and books which can provide inspo for what to forage for at different times of year. We’ve found some of the most fun foraging play dates to be: wild garlic at Nene Park in the spring, sweet chestnuts at Burghley Park in the autumn, elderflower in the early summer and of course not forgetting blackberries in late summer (both readily found in and around Deeping). So I challenge you today to think how many common plants or ‘weeds’ do you know that are edible. I am continually amazed at just how many native wild plants there are! And what’s more, how many nutritional and even medicinal properties they have. In a time of rising food prices and climate change, this feels like small but firmly important steps to reclaim knowledge that would once have been known to everyone – to learn together and with the next generation.
