Welcome

Isn’t it great when a plan comes together? Even better when there is tangible evidence of it! And so – the Sensory Garden at the Deepings Community Centre is just that. The Lions Club of the Deepings, working in tandem with the Deepings Community Centre Trust and Sense, spearheaded the project which saw a parcel of land transformed into a space to benefit those with sensory loss or impairment. The garden was declared open by The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Air vice-marshal (Rtd) Gary Waterfall CBE, who also unveiled a wall plaque listing the many individuals and organisations who supported the scheme. In the words of Helen Keller, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.’ The garden can be visited by disabled and able-bodied people individually or in groups. To make a booking please contact the Community Centre on 01778 381770. Judy Stevens 3

Graham Moorcroft and team displayed a scale model of Billingborough station with a variety of trains operating as if the line between Sleaford and Bourne had remained open. Market Deeping Model Railway Club made a welcome return with their exhibition at Stamford Welland Academy over the weekend of May 14-15. In 2019 the Club made national media headlines when on the morning of the planned event, they discovered that several of the layouts and trade stands had been vandalised. Following a great deal of help from the modelling community - including a donataion from pop star Rod Stewart - they managed to salvage what they could. However, COVID restrictions then stopped the event returning in either 2020 or 2021, There was a sense of relief when the doors were opened. Cover story Goosanders first bred in Scotland in 1871; they spread to northern England in 1970. They are a freshwater duck, belonging to the sawbill family, named after their serrated bills, which they use to catch fish. They nest in holes in trees or nest boxes and their tiny young make the leap of faith to the water from a height. The males have nothing to do with the young once a pair have mated, leaving Mum to tend to their young. Locally, Goosanders winter in good numbers. Traditionally, Tallington Lakes has had winter roosts of near 100 and more recently so has Willow Tree Fen, near Tongue End. They can be found on the river in Deeping St James in winter, as well as Deeping Lakes and along Deeping Highbank. A winter roost has also started to build at Maxey Gravel Pits and this year for the first time, a pair has successfully bred! Last year a pair was present all spring but was presumably unsuccessful in their breeding attempt. This year, a female was found on 28th April on the Maxey Cut by Maxey village, with ten cute, young – a really sizeable brood and the first ever in

the Deepings area! Mum has been ranging with her young from Maxey to Peakirk, along the Maxey Cut – two miles or so! At the time of writing (early May), nine out of ten have survived. From only a few days old, the young can catch their own tiny prey, but Mum still has a lot to do. There are many predators out there and dogs keep jumping in the cut chasing balls, so she still needs to make sure they are all fed and kept warm. Hopefully she will do well! Will Bowell

Shaws of Maxey

celebrate 100 years of their family business

18

FEATURE

Outside the old Wembley Stadium This year, Shaws of Maxey celebrate their centenary. For 100 years they’ve travelled the length and breadth of the UK (and beyond), making sure that your next adventure is one to remember. Their story shows courage and determination with local spirit and family at its heart. The family business was founded in 1922 by Edwin ‘Teddy’ Shaw, grandfather of present partners Jane, Richard and Chris. Edwin had an engineering background in Yorkshire but during The Great War he was transferred to Peterborough to work for Peter Brotherhood as a millwright. Edwin fell for a local girl; they moved to Maxey and took the momentous decision to buy their first bus, which was kept in Mr. Frisby’s barn on Castle End Road. They ran a local service into Peterborough (see page 20) along with anything else that came their way, including furniture removals! They couldn’t afford to have the vehicle off the road for long and repairs were usually made by candlelight with the help of neighbours. A couple of years later Edwin took a chance and purchased the house and land at 49 High Street in Maxey, which you will still recognise as their depot today (see pic 3). The building you can see in the background was recently damaged in strong winds but things were built to last back then and with a bit of modification the building remains in use as a storage facility. After the war Edwin worked hard to build the business back up and by then he was joined by his son, Harry, whose favourite job was as team driver for Peterborough United! Harry, with support from wife Doreen, gradually took over the running of the business and it flourished under his leadership. He had a real talent for buying and selling coaches with many winter Sundays spent journeying across the country to ‘look at a bus’. continued >

19

FEATURE Harry died suddenly in 1981 and it was then that Jane, Richard and Chris inherited the business with Richard’s wife Carol joining in 2010 and his daughter Tory coming on board in 2015. Their first holiday brochure was published in 1982 and featured just six tours, one of which had just six passengers (including their mum and gran!). Their first touring coach was a Bova Europa. It was a real luxury to find a coach equipped with a toilet and drinks facility and Les Staniforth (see below) was, and still is, at the wheel! In March this year Les celebrated 45 years with the company – three generations of Shaws have had the pleasure of working with Les whose loyalty and dedication have never faltered. Les even has his own son, Darren, behind the wheel too now! Harry and Edwin outside the Maxey depot during the 1940’s. Petrol was sold from the site until 1995 It’s not just the owners and the (fantastic!) team that have contributed to the success of this local family business. The hotels, Opposite the bus shelter in Glinton Rd Helpston in the 1920’s destinations and customers all play a huge part. The Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells featured in their 1984 brochure (see page 22), and continues to feature 38 years later in their 2022 programme! Like Shaws, this wonderful hotel is family run and in its fifth generation, and just in case you’re reading the hotel small print from the 80s… they can confirm that all rooms are now ensuite!

Their loyal, local customers return time and time again safe in the knowledge that they will receive a welcoming, professional service. A particularly special mention must be given to Fay and Stan Jarvis from Marholm who travelled (with driver Les) on Shaws’ very first holiday in 1982 and toured with them almost every year since. Stan’s last holiday was in 2018 but Fay continued to travel until Shaws’ annual reunion weekend in 2020, going full circle with Les at the wheel once again. This treasured 40-year connection ended with Fay’s passing earlier this year. Computer records don’t go back far enough to count the number of holidays they took but, like many of their customers, it was the friendship and loyalty that were valued and appreciated the most. 20

Outside of Maxey Church April 2022

Shaws’ latest brochure (see page 17) looks rather different from their 1982 publication. It’s full of colour with over 150 enticing ideas for top UK destinations. It features famous attractions such as Buckingham Palace, RHS Flower Shows, Land’s End and Brecon’s spectacular Mountain Railway, alongside lesser known (but equally brilliant) destinations like the Beth Chatto Gardens, the Shuttleworth Aircraft Collection, a Lake District Mountain Goat journey and an Elan Valley local ranger tour. There’s also plenty of ideas for quiet days by the coast and in the country, or sightseeing and shopping in bustling city spots.

100 year celebratory events include a Centenary Reunion short break in November, a summer afternoon tea and a festive get together this winter. Keep an eye out for more information coming soon.

Nothing like a dame! Theatre at the time of William Shakespeare was strictly ‘men only’ and that meant men dressing up as women for the female roles – hence their robes would drag on the floor and the term ‘drag’ artist was coined. Even when women were allowed to perform, drag artists never really went away – they emerged in variety theatre of the music hall age with characters such as Julian Eltinge, followed later by Danny la Rue and Dame Edna Everidge. What would a panto be without a dame? Nothing!

This has meant the growth in numbers prepared to get involved. Naturally this has seen some watering down of the quality of some of the acts but at the same time the opportunities for drag queens continue to grow and the colour and vibrancy of their contribution enrich society! Annually this culminates in the Pride Parades, not just parties but, in a world where there are several countries where it is still illegal to be gay and eleven where the death penalty still exists if you are found to be a part of the LGBTQIA, they are an essential statement of self worth.

But then RuPaul exploded onto the TV with Drag Race and all of a sudden drag became mainstream! In 2017 Time Magazine named RuPaul as one of the hundred most influential people in the world.

‘Peterborough Pride will take place in August this year and locally born Queen, Teddi, has already booked her place’

Peterborough Pride will take place in August this year and locally born Queen, Teddi, has already booked her place. Teddi, born and raised in Peterborough, has played with gender all her life, dressing up in her mum’s clothes, wearing her heels as a kid and then, when she attended the London Met Uni, exploring this in a more serious way as she looked at gender dynamics, writing a dissertation on how gender roles

reversing can help your understanding of character. It was after this as a political statement that she went into a straight room in drag and it certainly took the air out of it! Just two years later and she was performing in drag, singing, dancing hosting – anything from engaging bingo to interactive quizzes and networking events. Influences are her Mum and aunties and also gay icons such as Barbra Streisand, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Emma Bunton – all have a place. Naturally RuPaul and the legendary drag race offerings: The Vivienne, Alyssa Edwards, Lawrence Chaney and Shangela. Top tips for makeup are always to protect your skin with a good primer, make sure that you match your skin tone with your foundation and never be worried about a bold lip! Being a larger Queen the High Street is not a great place to find costumes and so some are handmade; some are from drag specific websites and Asos.

The Vivienne

Teddi performs locally at the Ironhorse Ranch House and is available for bookings on www.teddithedragqueen.co.uk 07479463135

WEDDINGS

Image: Gina Fernandes

On a sun kissed afternoon, Chloe and Adam contemplated the verdant lusciousness of the grounds of Molecey Mill. For them there was no contest for a place to host their wedding party after they visited the Mill: ‘The appeal was that there was no corporate package, no production-line style event but instead a laid back vibe which was much more in tune with what we wanted for our friends and family,’ explains Chloe.

the pull to the Deepings is great for Chloe and Adam, visiting most weekends from their home in Leicestershire, so it was for the Moleceys whose legacy lives on even today. As the swallows return for the summer, as they have for centuries, so the couple plan their wedding as they have been planned here over many years. For Chloe and Adam, the marquee will be on Owl Island surrounded by trees and the river as it winds its way through the estate. The wedding party will have already been sustained by drinks served in the stables and close family members will have enjoyed a night’s rest in the individually designed rooms on beds which have been described as so many clouds!

What perhaps was not immediately evident was that this wedding would be a ‘coming home’ uniting the history of the Mill, bought by local baker John Molecey in 1760, with a young couple starting out on their married life together as John and Eleanor had done all those years ago! Eleanor was the niece of Mary Thorpe of Thorpe’s Mill (next to Molecey’s on the Stamford Road). Adam has been brought up in Market Deeping, attending pre-school at The Green School in Church Street founded by John’s daughter Elizabeth Molecey in 1851. Both Chloe and Adam attended the Deepings School and have chosen to be married at St Guthlac’s with their photos taken a stone’s throw from the tombs of John (d. 1790) and Eleanor (d. 1779). The Molecey family looked to Market Deeping as their local town and famously had a gingerbread shop there. Just as

Chloe and Adam had been firm friends since school days when they had met in the lunch queue; the pair each have two brothers; Chloe, Jordan and Tyler, and Adam, Matt and Will and a strong friendship bond developed between the two families. Adam went off to University in Bangor where he studied Product Design and Chloe went to De Montfort where she studied Human Resource Management, Both now have careers Image: Gina Fernandes

WEDDINGS in their chosen professions but their friendship had grown into something more during the years apart – you know what absence does? Now the pair have a much-loved puppy, Otis, and have spent many happy hours planning their wedding over the past 18 months when in the autumn of 2020 Chloe said yes! With a muted, stylish colour scheme of sage green and blush pink there are three bridesmaids (Cherise Houston, Emma Youngs, Hannah Philpott, and a maid of honour, Georgia Mann). Best man is Joel Stirling – a friend of Adam’s from University and coincidentally from Northern Ireland: Chloe was born there too, coming to Langtoft when she was eight. Many family and friends will attend the wedding from the province. John and Eleanor had a strong marriage with a happy family who carried on their business at the Mill – if they were with us today they would be offering their very best wishes to Chloe and Adam!

Would you like to be an astronaut?

RAY PAWLETT

If you had asked me that question when I was a young lad, like many young people, the answer would have been a very certain YES. Even nowadays in my 50s, I think that if Elon Musk or some other friendly billionaire asked me if I wanted to go on a space flight, the answer would be the same. I can’t imagine that happening, though, so I guess that I will just have to stay terrestrial! Did you know, though, that many astronauts suffered with their mental health after they came back with things such as depression and ‘mental fog’? NASA did a lot of research, and came to the conclusion that a variety of factors were in play. One of the major factors was the effect of zero gravity on our proprioception, a fancy word that refers to the body’s ability to perceive its own position in space. For example, proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger. When we are in space, our nervous systems are stimulated in different ways to when we are on the ground and weakened proprioception is one of the results. The good news is that through special exercises and training the astronauts were able to strengthen these parts of the nervous system and recover their mental health. This information stimulated much research within medical and holistic professionals. These days, many people spend a lot of time with their consciousness directed towards a TV or computer screen and don’t get enough exercise. This, along with natural ageing. will weaken our sense of proprioception. We don’t get as bad as the astronauts but our sense of where we are in the world reduces, along with balance, and the possibility of mental health issues increases. It’s not all bad news though. Losing our sense of proprioception can be seen as a natural effect of ageing but unlike so many things that come with ageing, it’s one that we can do something about.

When we exercise our bodies to improve our balance and coordination, then we are strengthening our nervous systems in a way that can help. Simply standing on one leg for a few minutes a couple of times a day will help. If you wanted to really help your body to stay younger or even recover some of that posture and vitality that you had when you were younger, then you would be well advised to take up a suitable exercise programme. There are many such exercise programmes about but one of the most effective is Tai Chi. When we practise Tai Chi, we strengthen our bodies and nervous systems in many ways. If we get ‘the bug’ for it, then practising most days for a while is not difficult. We integrate it into our lives. Before you ask, yes, a lot of retired astronauts are very keen on Tai Chi. If you would like to find out more, please contact me on 07413 620344, mail ray@ki-ways.co.uk or find me on Facebook under Ki-Ways. 39

LINCS IN LOCKDOWN For many years I have wanted to take a year to record the natural world around me, but it wasn’t until Covid spread quickly across the world that the opportunity to do just this was presented to me! As my husband and I began our regulation exercise, spring bloomed and I sketched and made notes of the wonders of the season unfolding. Superimposed over this I recorded numbers of cases, deaths, and the changing regulations.

My three illustrated nature journal sketchbooks were created as Granny’s record for seven grandchildren, but when others said they wanted a copy – my ideas changed. I had the pages scanned in Deeping by ‘Artworksrepro’, and had 200 books self published. They sold in two months and more were printed to sell in local bookshops, gift shops and galleries. It can be purchased at £12.50 direct from me at pcrampinart@gmail.com. Two paintings from the book were exhibited in Peterborough Cathedral – ‘Art Made in Lockdown’ – in February and featured on a stand at the Deepings Literary Festival. Pauline Crampin

Of Dragons and Damsels Words and Pictures by William Bowell

Flaming June!

Back in September 2020, dear reader, I reported in this marvellous publication, about Willow Emerald Damselflies spreading into our area. Their establishment here has been incredibly successfully over the past three years and now late summer and warm early autumn visits to the likes of Deeping Lakes and Baston Fen will see hundreds if not thousands of these delicate damsels, dangling in the wind.

Willow Emerald

The lazy, hazy days of summer really kick off in ‘Flaming June’ and on the sweltering hot days, my attention turns away from the sky and our feathered friends and more towards our waterways and grassland, looking for legendary Dragons and Damsels. From a young age, the life cycle of Odonata (the family to which Dragonflies and Damselflies belong) has always fascinated me. From the tiny nymphs found when pond dipping, to the emergence on reed stems, then bursting out of their skins to create a beautiful flying insect; they are beautiful, fascinating creatures. Our local area is littered with waterways which in turn attracts a wide array of different Dragonflies and Damselflies and June is a peak month for many of them. Since 1995, an incredible eleven species of Dragonfly or Damselfly have been recorded in Britain for either the first time after apparent extinction or for the first time ever. Whilst greater observer awareness almost certainly plays a part, much of the reason for these new occurrences is the widespread expansion of many species across Europe, because of climate change. Scarce Chaser

46

Many of these ‘new’ species have subsequently established themselves as breeding residents. The Small Red-eyed Damselfly was only recorded for the first time in 1999 and only started breeding locally in the 2000s, but now is a fully-fledged common resident of our local pools and slowmoving rivers.

Another, this time larger, coloniser, which arrived in our area for the first-time last summer, is the Norfolk Hawker. Also known as the Green-eyed Hawker, this large dragonfly, could be easily mistaken for the regular Brown Hawker, but the for the difference in eye colour (brown/blue in Brown Hawkers). Several Norfolk Hawkers were found at Baston Fen last summer and almost certainly bred, and this spring one has been found in Peterborough, so signs are encouraging for this summer and June is a peak month for them. Twenty years ago, this species was very much restricted, in Britain to the Norfolk broads or the south coast of England and it is still considered endangered. Not only are there new colonisers but we also enjoy nationally scarce Dragonflies which breed in good numbers in our area. Scarce Chaser is one such beautiful dragonfly, which is considered near-threatened in status in Britain. Locally, they are best found in ditches and drains south of the River Nene, with the Great Fen and Woodwalton Fen in particular, being hotspots.

Norfolk Hawker

Males are very blue, with blue eyes and blue bodies, whilst females are brown. They are very similar to Broad-bodied Chasers; however, BBCs tend to favour ponds and puddles. In fact their fondness for puddles make BBCs often the first species to appear at new garden ponds.

If this June is a particularly hot one in Europe and the airstreams are from a southerly direction, then Britain can expect to see influxes of other species of Dragons and Damsels. In 2006 Red-veined Darters were found across southern Britain and bred in large numbers, including locally Lesser Emperor at neighbouring gravel pits in the Deepings. Males are bright red and as their name suggests; their wings have wonderful red veins running through them, which makes them distinctive from familiar Ruddy or Common Darters. The following year, more appeared in the spring and this time, Lesser Emperor dragonflies came with them. Our Emperors are our biggest dragonfly and simply

stunning, as they patrol rivers and drains. Lesser Emperors may be smaller but are just as stunning and one morning in 2007, a couple of us found nine different individuals at Maxey pits, including a pair ovipositing – the first breeding confirmed in Cambridgeshire. But both species never took hold like Small Red-eyed or Willow Emerald, or perhaps Norfolk Hawker will do. However, maybe this year will see them return and with our ever increasingly warmer summers, perhaps this time they will decide that they would rather be in Deeping…. forever?!

Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages. blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.
