Kids Competition: Draw your Dream House At Newton Fallowell family matters and we are proud to announce our Creative Kids Competition. So Parents and Grandparents it’s your task to make sure the young artists in your family know about our competition. There are two age categories which are: 7 years and under and aged 8 to 11. The competition is to draw your dream house. This could be the house you live in, a tree house, a fairy-tale palace or perhaps even a house boat? Use a blank A4 piece of paper and get creative. There will be art sets for the winner and runner up in each age category. The winners along with some of the best entries will be displayed in the window of Newton Fallowell Market Deeping between the 5th and 14th of June so come along and have a look.

The closing date for the competition is the 1st of June and the winners will be announced shortly after. All entries can be dropped at our office and must have a name, age and contact number on the back so we can get in touch with the winners. If you are thinking about moving and looking for your dream home then think Newton Fallowell and call us for a free valuation. Good luck to all and we look forward to announcing the winners and displaying some of the best work.

Welcome

Deeping has certainly been riding on the crest of a wave this year and not just because this was the thirtieth Gang Show! Just when we thought the Deepings celebrity status couldn’t get any higher when Sammy the seal made the 27 mile journey to spend the spring with us, than Cassidy Little topped the poll of the People’s Strictly Come Dancing and put adversity to one side to show us how it should be done. He is now set to appear live in London’s West End in a new Jay Markwick flamenco show, Explosion. The more we research ideas, stories and people for the pages of this magazine ‘I’d rather be in Deeping’ the more we realise that this community is positively teeming with talent. Whether it is the artists who are opening their studios at the end of June, the skilled volunteers down at the Lakes, new authors and entrepreneurs the more we hear the more we get that ‘I’d rather be in Deeping’ feeling! 3

NEWS Cockapoo Ronnie transforms a life and inspires new accessories range

Inspired by the sights and sounds of Turkey, UK based, Ottoman Hands work with artisans from Istanbul to create beautiful contemporary, on trend pieces of jewellery while remaining true to traditional Ottoman styles and techniques. Now available from Murano Silver in the Market Place.

Mark Allen has recently designed the new logo for Jubilee Park having become a regular dog walker on the site. So far, so normal. Except that Mark has ankylosing spondylitis, arthritis, and castlemans disease, and spent many a day ‘resting’ as he was too inflamed to do much else. All that changed when his cockapoo puppy, Ronnie arrived and he had to take him for his exercise. This has been invaluable to Mark and he soon identified with the increasing band of cockapoo lovers locally. He noticed that there wasn’t any quality, stylish, merchandise for this unique, zany breed and decided to launch Cockapoo Luvr accessories and wearables. A group of fifteen led by Mayor, Roy Stephenson oversaw the erection of a swift and bat tower at Rectory Paddock, Market Deeping in April, The Tower, the brainchild of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Volunteer, Ian Stapleton is solar powered and emits swift sounds imperceptible to the human ear at regular intervals. The project also included the distribution of 500 leaflets at Market Deeping and William Hildyard Community Primary Schools and a competition in which five pupils from each school won a swift box. Nora Littler having grown trays of wildflower seed over the winter also oversaw the planting of wildflowers on the site. A happy shaggy dog story February Sunday morning and in the middle of Stowgate, just emerged from Back Lane, the silhouette of the most beautiful dog. Terrified she ran down the back of Locks Close. Frenzied facebook messages that day and the next recorded sightings throughout DSJ. Several people including Lee from First Class Dog Training tried unsuccessfully to catch her. She disappeared without trace. Three weeks later she was found in Baston by a lady, collapsed and starving. She contacted Three Counties Dog Rescue who took her to their vets for emergency treatment. Now recovering the graceful “Gracie” has been re-homed with a three dog family who have plenty of experience with the breed. Gracie is the fourth lurcher Three Counties have rescued since the hare coursing season got underway. If you can help, Three Counties can be found at www.threecountiesdogrescue.org. You can also follow them on their facebook page and at https://twitter.com/3CountiesDogs

Lakes Nature Reserve

FEATURE

The nature reserve is located just south of the automated rail crossing in Deeping St James, it consists of two quite different areas, ‘The Lake’, part of Deeping Gravel Pits SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), was quarried in the 1870’s - 1890’s and the newer Welland Bank quarry, which was worked in the 1990’s. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust’s acquisition of part of the site was made possible by grants (£165,000) awarded by HLF (Heritage Lottery Fund) and (£91,096) ALSF (Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund). The reserve opened in 2004, but a lot of work had been done before, including path creation, fence and bridge installation plus building the bird hides. Work to establish the reserve was largely done by volunteers. Routine management work and work to improve the reserve for wildlife is still done by volunteers who fund raised for and built an artificial sand martin bank, and installed two artificial otter holts, both very successful projects.

The visitors’ route is around 1 mile in length to the main bird hide overlooking the ‘The Lake’ - says Dave Vandome, Volunteer Nature Reserve Manager

Wildlife on the reserve includes large numbers of ducks, swans, geese and waders. These ground nesting birds are prone to predation, so it important to keep potential nesting sites clear of trees – trees give predators like crows and magpies a convenient perch to look for lunch! There are wooded areas as well, the railway land to the north of the reserve, and the wooded parts of the visitors’ route, for instance. The visitors’ route is around 1 mile in length, taking visitors to the main bird hide overlooking the ‘The Lake’ and gives good views of the different areas, without disturbing the wildlife too much. DEEPING LAKES OPEN DAY, 10.30am – 4.00pm Sunday 7 June. Trust sales, refreshments, children’s’ activities, excellent home-made cooking and locally grown plants will be on sale.

FEATURE

The Lakes - the back story A tranquil setting, the silence only interrupted by birdsong, the rustling of leaves and the occasional flapping of wings. But it was not always so. In the mid 1800s brickworks, where the boathouse now stands, were established on the Deeping fishponds and a thriving settlement was erected with shops, stables, a carpenter’s shop and a blacksmith’s forge. Over 100 men were employed. More than two million bricks were produced for the Great Northern Railway, which had purchased 40 acres well known for its gravel and clay. The bricks were used to construct St James Deeping Station along with a goods depot and coal yard, facilitated by lines laid to the brickworks, known locally as ballast pits. The station opened in 1849 on completion of the Peterborough to Spalding Railway line. After this followed a period of gravel extraction on the site and records show that even up to 1914 men were working at the ballast pits. Many gave up their jobs there to go and serve at the Front. In 1873 an enormous leg bone, 3 feet long and 3 foot in circumference weighing 2 stone 4 pounds had been dug up at the pits not far from where tremendous horns had been found a few years earlier, 12 foot down in the gravel. They were thought to belong to a species of mammal now extinct. Much later, a tooth of a woolly mammoth thought to be between 20,000 and 50,000 years old was found here.

a visit to the ponds ... Wild swans in groups of three and four at a time have visited the ponds but Mr Shale, keeper for 30 years, never remembers seeing any wild geese there, although they were not uncommon visitors in the surrounding fens.’ The article recalls that ‘Ruff and Reeve birds that are now almost extinct in the fenland, nested in one of the beds of reeds. The rarity of the event attracted considerable attention. The Ruff is a fine fighting bird and he took umbrage at this intrusion of his domestic retreat and he and his wife deserted their nest.’ The keeper came across the remains of an eel on the banks, captured by an otter. The portion left weighed 3½ lbs so it was estimated that in its entirety the eel would have weighed at least 9½ lbs!

After this followed a period of gravel extraction on the site and records show that even up to 1914 men were working at the ballast pits.

The adjoining Mere west of the railway is privately owned and was also quarried to provide ballast for the railway until 1875. It was then transformed into a beauty spot, described as a ‘fairy land’ by the owner, Richard Thompson of Stamford. He stocked the lake with fish, planted trees on the island and woodland alongside it. The Lake became a visitor attraction with shooting and fishing parties from London staying in the area. Four large Thames fishing boats were bought up and placed on the Lake,

In the late 1950s the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust established a bird-ringing trap on the island and between 1964 and 1982 a total of 11,564 ducks were ringed on the island. A pochard ringed in February 1966 was shot in Mogodon, Russia, in September 1968, 8,400 miles from where it was ringed.

An article discovered in the Peterborough Citizen from 1932 tells of passengers in the train travelling from Peterborough catching a glimpse of the ponds from the windows of the railway carriage: ‘Wild fowl can be seen swimming on the surface of the water and the woodpecker is laughing boisterously in the trees which surround the decoy. On three or four occasions an odd cormorant has paid

Joan Gibbons, a well-respected botanist, noticed the Lake from a train window as she travelled to London in 1966. She later toured the area and listed some of the plants that she had found, including greater spearwort and early marsh orchids. By the time the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust acquired the site, it was overgrown and the wildflowers had gone; happily, with their careful stewardship, they have now returned.

Ellie Sandall

- wild at art

Tucked away in a little Victorian cottage in the heart of Deeping St. James, Ellie Sandall can be found in her studio overlooking the river. Listening to an audio book and surrounded by pencils, paint and patterned paper, she sits creating a world where rabbits dance, foxes bristle and lemurs chase. Ellie illustrates in mixed media, using watercolour, ink, pastel and collage (ably assisted by her basset hound, William!). With her Dad having grown up in West Deeping and her Mum moving to the area as a child, Ellie is a Deeping girl through and through. The eldest of three, Ellie’s childhood was spent with her sister and brother surrounded by a menagerie of small, furry and feathered pets, in a house where art materials were always to hand and creativity was encouraged.

“I went to Hamerton Zoo intending to sketch wallabies...but I found the lemurs completely captivating.”

14

After spending much of her time at The Deepings School doodling covertly on the last pages of her exercise books, Ellie studied Graphic Design at Bath School of Art, followed by a Master’s degree in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. With strong links to the world of publishing, a two book deal with Egmont followed, and soon she found herself the award-winning author of Birdsong, published in 2010, and Daisy Plays Hide & Seek in 2011.

Ellie then moved on to work with Hodder, publishing Copycat Bear in 2012 and Follow Me which is out this spring. Follow Me tells the story of a mischievous lemur and his friends as they chase, hunt and race their way through the book, coming face to face with danger along the way. ‘The lemur characters came about quite by chance,’ she explains. ‘I went to Hamerton Zoo intending to sketch wallabies for another story I had in mind but I found the lemurs completely captivating! I especially liked their close-knit family groups and the way they interacted with each other, and through the sketches a ‘follow my leader’ inspired story began to form.’ Alongside her illustration work, Ellie works as the art coordinator of St John’s Church School and Winyates Primary School in Peterborough, where she enjoys the rare position of being able to concentrate solely on teaching art across the primary age range. Through this she is able to give children the opportunity to be inspired by and enjoy the arts, particularly those who might be finding other areas of the curriculum more challenging. The children’s achievements in the arts are celebrated with a school-wide exhibition each summer, in which every child has a piece of their work on show, and parents and carers are invited to attend a private view. ‘We have had a great response from visitors in the past who have commented on how brilliant the work looks when it’s all on display,’ Ellie says.

PROFILE

xxxx

‘It really boosts the children’s confidence and instils a sense of worth to the artwork they’ve produced.’ Harbouring an ambition to take her skills as an educator into the wider community and particularly to the Deepings, Ellie has plans to create an art club for creative youngsters, which is something she would have loved to attend as a child. A qualified Arts Award Adviser, she hopes to be able to offer the opportunity for children and young people in the Deepings to gain a recognised qualification in the arts outside of school, and to develop their creativity and leadership skills along the way. Ellie will be exhibiting in Black Cab Art Studio as part of Peterborough Open Studios alongside fellow illustrator Craig Pattrick. See page 19. 15

FITNESS

Building solid foundations for a lasting Empire Inclusiveness is the watchword of Empire Gym and they quickly realised that igniting the spark in young people who show an interest in fitness is one of the most significant triggers in providing for their future well-being. So discounted memberships for those between 16-19 are offered with a compulsory induction to ensure they train safely and appropriately for their age. In addition to 50 weeky classes, an additional 9 classes a week are specifically designed for young people and children. All instructors have recently undertaken the ‘Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instructing for Children’ qualification. Classes are split into age groups, and then children from 14 upwards are able to do any other Empire class providing they do so with their parent or guardian. At the other end of the spectrum, discounted membership packages are on offer for those over 60. Specific classes such as the ‘Silver Circuits’ class on a Tuesday are provided for the older generation. Investment in ‘Total Access’ gym equipment allows disabled customers

to use the gym alongside able bodied customers. National Deaf, Blind Rubella Charity, SENSE has a significant presence in the Deepings. Because of this, all SENSE DeafBlind people are non-paying members of Empire Gym as are their support workers. Empire also work closely with another locally based charity, Heritage Care who’s people and support workers are also given free gym membership. Matt Weston of Empire Gym said, “Kate and Sophie who have Downs Syndrome come to Empire every Friday for a fitness session. It genuinely is the most uplifting part of our week!”

In the spirit of ‘Empire for Everyone’ great pleasure has been taken in welcoming several members

with Parkinsons Disease and working to make sure these members can train safely and with complete confidence. In this spirit, Empire have also worked with local Cardiac Rehab teams to make sure those going through their rehab journey can do so safely.

Concessions are offered to those serving in uniform (this also extends to members of the police force and nurses) and for Veterans. A former Royal Marine Commando is on the gym staff and it is well known that the Gym is particularly proud to have welcomed Cassidy Little, Royal Marine, Dancer, Actor and genuine good friend of Empire Gym who with his dance partner Natalie Lowe rehearsed at the Empire Gym for their ‘People’s Strictly’ Triumph!

One of the biggest compliments paid to the Gym was only a few weeks ago, when the Doctor who quite literally put Cassidy back together joined the gym with his family. Wing Commander Jon Kendrew said on Twitter… ‘Absolutely awesome circuits today @empiregyms @bears_eat_oats leading the way. Rehab in action #militarycovenant alive in Market Deeping.’ All gym floor staff are qualified to Level 3 Personal Trainer Level and the gym floor is never left unattended. Reception staff will greet customers with a cheerful upbeat welcome. The ‘Empire For Everyone’ principle which at its heart is designed to inspire people and provide a platform for people to inspire others by excelling and overcoming perceived barriers or hardships is the legacy that is coveted by Empire Gym and after only ten months they are clearly well on their way to achieving this!

HOW TO ART

Present your pictures With Michelle Allott of Black Cab Studio Picture Framing

The choice of art work and the best way of displaying it is an important factor in the design of your home. Both the smallest and largest of walls and rooms can be enhanced by the addition of photos, art and special pieces. Here are a few ideas and tips but really the most important thing is that you like the art you have chosen and from then on the only challenge is how to show it off to its best. Hanging pictures with a theme together adds impact and style. Large walls can take collections of art like this wall of print maker John McGowan. It is classic and will never date.

Displaying frames and pictures on shelves and ledges is a great way of not having to hang pictures and gives the option to move work around with great ease. The frames don’t need to be the same. Staggering and overlapping gives an informal and interesting look. 20

An alternative to art on the walls is a display of mirrors. Mirrors add light and shimmer to your walls and can bring elegance and personality to even the smallest of spaces. You can create a mirror to match any room by choosing a frame and syle to suit from shabby chic to classic elegance.

HOW TO ART It is important to relate art to its surroundings, pictures placed 6” – 9” inches above a sofa will create a unified look. When hanging a piece of art over a piece of furniture it should not be longer then the width of the furniture. As a general rule it should be about two thirds of the furniture’s width.

A small photo or piece of art on a wall by itself will tend to look lost. However to overcome this group several small items into a cluster that is proportional to the size of the wall. For a formal look hang your pictures in a symmetrical shape using straight lines. Always relate the size of the art to the wall size, choosing smaller pictures for narrow walls and large works for bigger.

Lets not forget our budding artists, by framing and hanging their work it shows that it is valued and can make for a very unique display. Youngsters can be quite prolific in the quantity they produce so frame/ hang it in a way that can be easily changed but is more than a magnet on the fridge door.

A properly hung staircase display is quite stunning and can make a hallway come alive. When hanging on a staircase the upward angle of the frames should match the angle of the stairs, keeping the larger frames as the focal point.

22

A good tip is to cut out of paper the various sizes of pictures and tape them on the wall before hanging. You can then instantly see if the layout will work without too many picture hooks in the wrong place.

Grow a delicious summer drink in a container!

1

Choose a robust container at least 15inch diameter and prepare your compost - the key to success! Mix with a trowel, ¼ bag multi purpose compost with 25 litres of John Innes no. 3 and add 2 cups of rock dust which will unlock the minerals in the compost and ensure healthy plants. This is a ‘secret’ ingredient available from Swine’s Meadow who will tell you more.

2

Add a scoop of root grow to the top of the compost so that it touches the roots of your plants.

3

SUMMER DRINK

Colin & Karan from Swine’s Meadow Farm Nursery show you how

In the middle of the pot plant your blackcurrant (Ben Lomond recommended). This can stay in the pot and fruit for many years to come.

4 Plant strawberry plants around the edge of the pot, again first adding a scoop of root grow to touch the roots. Cambridge & El Santa are early to mid fruiters while Honeaye is later. As runners are put out, turn them round and pop them back in the soil in the pot.

Make some Elderflower Cordial as a base for your drink later (or buy some from the Deeping Fudge Shop at Swine’s Meadow as a concentrate). 1. Pick 20 heads of elderflowers away from roads as they can absorb fumes. Leave to one side for any bugs to crawl away. Trim as much stalk as possible, place in a large bowl. 2. Dissolve 2kg sugar in 1.5 litres of water in a large saucepan. Heat (don’t boil) until sugar is dissolved. 3. Add zest from two unwaxed lemons, chop them up and add, bring to the boil and remove from heat 4. Pour over flowers, adding 80g citric acid, stir and let them stand for 24hrs. 5. Put muslin (buy squares from any cook shop in the jam dept.) over the top of a large jug and strain syrup through it.

6. Pour into sterilized jars for immediate use, it can keep for 6-8 weeks in fridge. Pour onto plastic bottles and freeze or pour into icecube trays and freeze to give ready-to-use portions. Dilute either 4 or 5 to 1 with sparkling water for a zinging drink. 7. This cordial will provide a base for your summer drink when you harvest your fruit! More on harvesting your fruits and making your summer drink in July. Glass bottles, citric acid and muslin squares are all available from chemists or from Deeping Fudge Shop at Swine’s Meadow.

5

6

Fuchsias give colour and you can also eat the fruit, Marcia and Shirley are recommended varieties and should be added to the container mid-end May.

Water every day or keep a saucer under the container topped up. Feed every three weeks with liquid seaweed to which can be added a garlic liquid to ward off aphids and slugs. Both available at Swine’s Meadow.

HISTORY

Hiring staff in Market Deeping, the swings and roundabouts “The Fair was now raging thick and loud. It was the chief hiring fair of the year and differed quite from the market of a few days earlier. In substance it was a whitey- brown crowd flecked with white - this being the body of labourers waiting for places. The long bonnets of the women like waggon-tilts, their cotton gowns and checked shawls mixed with the carters’ smock frocks; for they too entered into the hiring.”

This is how a Hiring Fair (also known as a Statute) was described by Thomas Hardy in The Mayor of Casterbridge, but similar scenes would have been seen in the Market Place here in Market Deeping. The Fairs took place in May and November and in May 1873 the Lincs Free Press reported that ’there was a large attendance of masters and mistresses seeking servants, and though there was a good number of servants the demand exceeded the supply. Extravagant wages were asked for and were given’. On the day of the Hiring, farmers and their workers would have the day off and come into Market Deeping to spend the day meeting friends, drinking and enjoying themselves while some went to find work or workers. crammed with people and stalls selling farm produce, sweets, trinkets and medicines. Farm workers were only hired for a six-month term and if the farmer did not ask them to stay then they had to find a new position. Workers who were unhappy in their job may decide to leave and they would need to be replaced. Men and women hoping to be hired would stand around in the Market Place in twos and threes with tickets in their caps to show that they were looking for work. Farmers would wander amongst them making their choices. They would pay a fee, often a penny known as ‘arles’, to seal the deal.

Horsemen could claim 2-5 shillings more than labourers as they were highly skilled, responsible for the horses that were highly valued on farms, doing the heavy work which could not be done by men. Each horseman was responsible for a pair of horses and one horseman was selected to be the most important, known as the First Horseman. Rising at 5.00 a.m. to tend the horses, they would have their own breakfast and then start work at 6, working on the fields all day, walking behind the horses and guiding them while they harrowed or ploughed the ground ready for

Women were also appointed for set terms usually to work in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning for the farmer’s family. They were kept hard at work under the watchful eye of the farmer’s wife. Living in the farmhouse, often in a little attic room, they fed the hens, milked the cows, made butter and helped the farmer’s wife to prepare the men’s food. They too worked long hours starting at 5.00 a.m. and continuing long into the evening. Young boys and girls were employed to scare the birds away from newly planted seeds. In 1881 the annual May statutes for the hiring of servants was a lot less successful than the one reported earlier: ‘There was a larger gathering of servants of both sexes than usual, and a good deal of hiring was done. High wages were asked but much less taken from £2-£3 below the average of last year. Swinging boats in the Market Place and dancing at some of the inns were the chief amusements. The theatrical entertainment announced to take place at the White Horse rooms on the same evening met with no patronage.’
