Great Xmas Gifts for Kids

Welcome Back in the summer, Britain’s second ever Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier) made the national and international headlines, being classified as a nearthreatened species and far away from its Alpine range. Local photographer Will Bowell’s photographs, whilst the bird was in the Peak District, attracted widespread attention, including an interview with Sky News! In August’s IRBID, it was reported as a once-in-a lifetime event to photograph Europe’s biggest bird of prey in Britain. Fast forward to 7th October and the sensational news that ‘Vigo’ (as she has been named) had been re-found much closer to home near Moulton Chapel was revealed! For the next five days locals enjoyed magnificent views of this massive bird and once again Vigo found herself in the headlines! Read the full story (so far!) in next month’s I’d Rather Be in Deeping. 3

When the organic land on Vine House Farm rests - every five years - red clover is grown - the seed is then harvested and sold on to other organic garmers. The 50 acres of clover become a haven for butterflies; brimstone, peacocks and small tortoiseshell and large whites. A butterfly oasis!

There wasn’t a dry eye in the meeting when Joley Garner Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice told the Deepingathon team about the work that Sue Ryder were doing even in these constrained times. The £1000 raised for the charity will not plug the £1.6 million funding gap but the goodwill and fundraising throughout the community is a vital lifeline and its emergency appeal from local people so far raised more than £324,000.

I feel inspired to move, working in the beautiful surroundings of the Oak Studio at Molecey Mill. I am Glenn and I run a bespoke health and wellness business called TMP - Training Made Personal. My clients enjoy a truly bespoke gym space with the reassurance of knowing it’s Covid secure. There is ventilation through bi-folding doors that open onto 20 acres of grounds. ‘Business as unusual’ best describes the way I have had to adapt in the current pandemic. Moving classes online and training clients throughout lockdown from wherever they are in the world has been a really fresh way to approach fitness. It comes with the challenges of being creative with both space and equipment. Using my extensive knowledge of how the body works, coupled with a background as a classically trained Royal Ballet Dancer; I approach movement differently. Get in touch to see just how I can help you be the best version of yourself. 07855 242 356 Instagram: Glenn_Roberts ‘When it comes to working out with Glenn you never know what he has up his sleeve. He constantly varies exercises and switches up workouts to keep them fresh and interesting. Working out with Glenn will mean that you’re not stuck in the gym. We go out on the road bikes, do bootcamps and circuits, alongside running, in the grounds at Molecey Mill as well as a co. You will never get bored of the workouts and you will learn to love a little bit of pain. The Granary is such a fabulous place to enjoy excercise and nature - the privacy of the Oak Studio with views over the gardens are a world away from your typical gym. This is such a special space for you start your journey with Glenn. Health is wealth.’

Loving life - training with TMP at The Granary! If you are a seasoned gym junky, new to training or a few times per week visitor like myself then I would not hesitate to recommend Glenn at TMP. Your first experience will be arriving at The Granary, which is simply beautiful all year round. My own visits have led me to fall in love with the place, it is peaceful and calm and so the perfect setting to train! Glenn is fun but serious, he will motivate you, make you scream at him and will make you do more than you currently think you can do! He is well educated and will listen carefully to you to understand all that you wish to.

A town of shopkeepers Lambert & Kisby Grocers was proudly emblazoned on the sides of their two model T Ford delivery vans which could be seen rattling along the streets of Deeping and as far as Greatford and Helpston and all stops in between. Janet Johnson (née Lambert) remembered ‘The aroma of fresh bread filled the Market Place air and macaroons, coconut, ginger and fairy cakes filled the windows. The bakehouse boasted the kind of ovens with cast iron doors and long peels – handles with shards on the end that had been used for centuries.’ Mr Wigginton, Albert Buff and Charlie Scotney would don large white sacking oven gloves and brave the intense heat to take the selection of white, brown and delightfully shaped cottage loaves out of the oven on to the shelves where they were graded by size and colour. When Eric Kisby, smart in his crisply starched white apron and coat, was not serving in the shop, he could be found icing the cakes of celebration, weddings, birthdays and Christmas as advertised in neat gold lettering in the window. Sweet jars jostled for position underneath the counter: humbugs, pear drops, aniseed balls and barley sugar to be weighed and poured into little white bags, tied with two ears at the end. At the back of the counter were little wooden draws with gold handles and varnished mahogany shelves with a treasure of currants and plump sultanas packed into parcels of pink and blue paper and underneath two big drawers filled up with sacks of tea and sugar ready to be weighed to the customers’ requirements. Bacon too was sliced for the customer on the marble slab at the other end of the shop with homemade pork pies, sausages and haslet, where the vinegar barrel filled bottles by the pint. Above there were packets of cornflakes, porridge and other breakfast cereals. Dates, with their boxes decorated with images of far-off lands, bottles of Camp coffee, Lux flakes, Robin Starch and carbolic soap all contributed to a heady smell of well-being that filled the shop and encouraged customers to sit awhile on the old fashioned light wood chairs, the kind with holes in the seat that would leave an impression if you sat on them long enough!

FEATURE Occasionally the gentle pace of life would be interrupted when the Welland burst its banks and the stock would be lifted onto the higher shelves, the piano put on bricks and the only carpet in the best room rolled up and stored in the warehouse out of reach of the grimy waters. Lambert and Kisby were brothers-in-law and had help to run the shop from Maggie Kisby (Eric’s sister) and two errand boys – at one time that post was filled by Walter Henfrey. The shop was rented from Mr Johnson of Elm House, Church Street, a man not noted for his carelessness with money, who suggested to Mr Lambert ‘to get up there and hold the bugger on’ when the chimney threatened to collapse after a particularly vicious gale. Bert and Mabel (née Kisby) Lambert lived at the back of the shop with their two daughters, Janet (b.1926) and Monica (b.1933). They would peep through the disguised windows at unsuspecting customers! Meanwhile Eric and his wife Elizabeth (née Christian) lived at Anno Domino house in Church Street, Market Deeping, opposite The Vine. Eric and Elizabeth had been married by the Revd. Cox at the Priory Church, Deeping St James, in June 1927. The bride was given away by her father and wore a dress of crepe de chine with a wreath and veil. Mr L. Kisby was best man and Messrs B. Lambert and K. Kisby were groomsmen. The bridesmaids were Ada Kisby (bridegroom’s sister) who wore a dress of wine crepe de chine with a black hat and Mabel Lenton who wore a flowered voile dress with a hat to match. Bert, a Deeping Gate man, and Mabel had married at St Guthlac’s Church five years before with Maggie Kisby as bridesmaid and William Chambers of Spalding as best man. Initially Bert and Mabel lived in Alford where Bert was a grocery manager, but in 1924 the opportunity to buy well-established grocery and baker’s shop L. E. Bland cropped up. Lucy Bland (b.1875) was the daughter of the manager of Market Deeping Gas Works, William and his wife Eleanor. Having trained as a confectioner she opened the Market 16

Deeping shop around 1903 when she was 28. She had another shop at 23 Bridge Street where the family had moved after William’s retirement and this was run by her brother, George and sister, Alice Maud. The Market Deeping shop had a tea room and Lucy enlisted the help of her sister, Emma to run the business. In 1907 the shop hit the headlines when Fred Burns (26) a clerk, John Marshall (26) a fireman and John Evans (22) a labourer, committed a distraction theft and left the shop with a piece of pork pie and a piece of brawn without paying for them. The men were caught redhanded eating the pies by the Police Inspector and Constable. They were taken into custody, each blaming the other but they were all found guilty and sentenced to six weeks’ hard labour. More happily, Lucy was in the Stamford Mercury in October 1910 when she was bridesmaid to her sister Alice Maud on her marriage to Daniel Wells at a large wedding held at the Priory Church. The bride wore a cream silk dress with a matching hat and was given away by her brother George. Horace Bland was the best man. A reception was held at the family home in Bridge Street, the couple setting up home at 118 Bridge Street where Daniel had his saddle and harness business.

FEATURE In 1912 Lucy married Charles (Chaddy) Barsby, the baker at the Deeping St James shop. When Lucy was expecting their son Bernard, born in 1915, Charles took over the running of the High Street shop. His cake baking skills were renowned and so Bert and Eric had bought into a lucrative business. The Barsbys moved further down the High Street and Charles became a pig and chicken farmer, continuing to supply the shop with meat. Shortly after taking over the shop Bert Lambert called at the Buff household in Deeping St James. He asked if ‘young Buff was at home as he would like to talk to him?’ The pair went to talk by the van: ‘I understand that you have left your job in Peterborough? We want an assistant in the bakehouse to work under MrWiggington who is head baker for us.’ Albert Buff said that depended on the wages and the answer came back ‘27 shillings and six pence per week’. That must have been enough as Albert started work the following Monday. The following year Albert once again stepped into the breach when Eric Kisby had appendicitis and there was no one to drive the delivery van. Fortuitously Sergeant Carter was in the shop at the time and testified that Albert could drive – he just needed a licence. He ordered young Buff to take five shillings to the Post Office buy a postal order and then he would let him drive that day! Albert was pleased: he was not 16 till the following June and it had only cost him one shilling and six pence! Albert stayed at the shop for nine years but in 1933 had to leave the bakery as he lost his hair and teeth because of the chemicals in the flour. The new self-raising flour that was being used at the time caused Albert to swell up and he lost three stone in a month and so at the age of just 24 he was told by the doctor to get an outside job. He was sad to leave the job he loved. 18

In March 1946 the landlords put the buildings up for auction at the White Horse. This consisted of a house with sales shop, bakehouse and other outbuildings in the High Street in the occupation of Lambert & Kisby, and two houses on the west side in the occupation of W. Wiggington and B. Searle. Three years later the lease was of the shop was sold to a Leicestershire firm. Bert and Mabel moved to Northfield Road, Peterborough, where Bert died in December 1954. Eric and Elizabeth moved to 87 High Street where the family had a sweet and toy shop. After his wife’s death, Eric moved to 34 Godsey Lane where he died in 1982. The shop itself became Studio 12 in the early 70s, owned by the Smith family, and sold crafts, model making kits, candles and gifts. The embryonic Market Deeping Railway Club under Dave Smith (no relation) built a layout in one of the outbuildings. Later the premises became Deeping TV Video & Audio which is still only two doors away today.

Amrit & Manjula Mistry Open all hours! In the early 1980s recession hit when Nigel Lawson was Chancellor (remember him?) and Margaret Thatcher was in the Prime Ministerial Chair! Manufacturing was hit particularly badly and three million were unemployed. Two of those people were newlyweds Amrit and Manjula Mistry. Amrit had worked at Metal Box Packaging Company and Manjula had worked in a laboratory for Rank Hovis. They had only lived in their marital home for six months and the future after a year was beginning to look bleak. In the end the London Fire Brigade offered Amrit a job with their accounts team but their loss was to be the Deepings gain as the pair had visited Deeping on the way to see family in Leicester and had viewed Brian and Jennifer Gardner’s Spar shop in Godsey Lane which was for sale. The Deepings appealed to the young couple and so with a blessing of an amicable banker a mutual love affair with the community began to unfold.

shopping while they learnt about what the people of Deepings like to eat! In those days the shop had a deli counter and locals would come in for a slice of corned beef, ham, cheese and beef. The keen fishermen would like to buy spam to use as bait for the fish. This was uncharted territory for the couple, originally from Kenya, who were used to slightly spicier fare! Shop hours were 8-6 with an hour for lunch between 1 and 2. This was for the couple a complete culture change but the positive feelings that they had for the area only flourished as they got to know their customers. Gentle giant Big Mal, Joan McSherry, who had been a post lady, and Mrs Merrill who gave the couple fifty pence (not an inconsiderable sum back then) on their first Christmas in the shop, and Mabel Barker and her large family are just a handful from many who the couple recall fondly.

‘In those days the streets of Deeping were much quieter than they are today and cows still grazed in the field where the Health Centre is now.’

This was 1984 - the couple moved in above the shop, the stock-take was done on the Sunday and on Monday they were open for business. Life was very different from Chadwell Heath, east of London. In those days the streets of Deeping were much quieter than they are today and cows still grazed in the field where the Health Centre is now. The couple didn’t leave the shop for ten months; parents did their food 20

Their two daughters were born while they lived in the flat upstairs, Manisha in 1987 and Anila in ’91; both attended the back school and went on to Bourne Grammar. After ten years the family moved into a house nearby but continued to work hard at the shop which had several refits over the years. Eventually the deli counter was replaced with a more extensive selection

of ready meals as habits changed and customers were more likely to stop by after a day’s work to pick up an easy supper and a drink from the off licence. At this time the hours were extended until 10, a move which saw the takings double! In 1987 the shop was awarded the Spar Retailer of the year for the East Midlands region and in 2001 received the Spar Off Licence Retailer of the year award. Disaster struck when Tesco opened and the couple lost trade, staff and almost their way! But instead of giving up their business they invested over £25,000 in a refit, negotiated a stock loan on a ‘buy now pay later’ basis and the gamble paid off! Amrit also realised the benefit of seeking help from the banks, from an accountant rather than a book-keeper, and from his financiers – business meetings were held regularly so any potential problems could be circumvented ahead of time. This is a piece of advice that Amrit has now carried with him to the Deeping Business Support Group, where he relishes the opportunity to put businesses that have been hit by the problems caused by the Lockdown in touch with professional advisors who can help them navigate their way through to calmer waters. As an active member of the Deepings business community, it was an obvious next step for Amrit to join the Rotary Club. Here he has served as a President and received the Paul Harris award for service to the community. He was a stalwart of the Feed Deeping campaign and his retirement has not, as yet, given him the time he was planning to spend with Manjula!

DEEPINGS BARGAIN HUNT

Market Deeping Antiques have professionally embraced Covid Security measures and so it was with great confidence that two teams, with auctioneer Jessica Wall from Stamford Auction Rooms and photographer Stuart Render, gathered for the fifth Deepings Bargain Hunt! Team A were Graham and Glenn from Molecey Mill and the Granary, while Team B were Deeping Lions: Dave Turner and Olwyn Cornwell. I’d rather be in Deeping magazine equipped both teams with £50 with which they selected items to go into an auction, the proceeds to go respectively to Exotic Pets and the Red Cross Emergency Service.

original glass mouthpiece. From Boots on sale at £25 it was snapped up on the day for just £19. Similarly the little copper tankard with the maker’s mark and stamp from Askews of Nottingham that Graham spied would also be a good fit with the Chemists’ Collectables. Indeed, filled with holly it would be a charming focal point on the Christmas table and at £10.50 it was a must-have for the Team A! Meanwhile Olwyn and Dave had also found their must-have buy! After the tragic fire in which they had lost their home this summer it is safe to say that they could use a big dollop of good luck -–and that was just what they found in the shape of a substantial Chinese good luck charm! Jessica conceded that while the charm did not have much age, Chinese items are enjoying a purple patch at the moment. Reduced on

the day from £25 to £17, this could well be their new good luck kicking in!

Market Deeping Antiques is a warren of treasures and the two teams were soon lost among the stalls. It was Dave who claimed the first item, a trinket box with a golfing motif, clearly inspired by his own love of golf. Jessica endorsed the selection as golfing memorabilia is enjoying popularity at the moment. At £4.00 Dave had bagged his first bargain!

Carrying on the Chinese theme, three oriental figures caught Olwyn’s eye and, encouraged by Jessica who felt their lack of age might be compensated by their collectability, were included in the couples haul – and finally reduced in price from £20 to £15 they made the cut!

Graham had noted that Jessica’s next auction on 31st October is a Chemists’ Collectables Sale – when the private estate of Chemists’ William Ditchfield Allen & Son of Oadby will come under the hammer. With this in mind he alighted on an antique earthenware inhaler, Dr Nelson’s Improved Inhaler, with its

Boots the Chemist was to be a recurring theme for the boys from Molecey who alighted on a print of Lincoln in a handsome frame, produced some time ago by Boots Framing Department and at just £5 too good a purchase to miss! The crowning glory of their selection though, having jettisoned a reproduction continued >

BARGAIN HUNT alligator-like African face mask at £40, was a genuine African spear with a wicker covering to the head at £12 down from £20! Too expensive for the Hunt but an object admired by Jessica was the Majolica Crab pot, priced at £65 and

made in Staffordshire. She was convinced that this would sell well at auction as it was an interesting piece and quite unique! Dave and Olwyn completed their cache with a vintage Goebels squirrel and pine cone salt and pepper shakers presented on a sweet little tray and dating from the 1950s. Originally £15 the couple were able to negotiate down to £10 and Jessica felt that the piece would have a widespread appeal! The last purchase from the Lions team was a sentimental choice from Olwyn who remembered her Mum having a similar item, a tiny bottle-green mint sauce boat and tray purchased for just £4.

‘We will remember them …’

WORLD WAR 1

An original silk poppy, worn on November 11th 1920, at the unveiling of the Cenotaph in London, to commemorate the men who gave their lives in the Great War. Donated by Mrs Landin, for The Deepings Remember 1914 to 1918 exhibition in November 2014, it is on permanent display at Market Deeping Town Hall.

Many of you will remember the exhibition in the Deepings Community Centre six years ago - with its reconstructions of a battlefield trench and a wartime home, displays of model aircraft and a wonderful airfield layout, memorabilia and medals, and school projects on First World War ancestors. The focal point was in the main hall - a gallery of posters telling the stories of Deepings’ servicemen. Susannah Smart, outside her cottage in The Row, West Deeping

Susannah Smart’s twins, Alice and Jack Smart.

This was where Maggie Ashcroft first met Cissie Vickers, born and brought up in Deeping St James. She had come to see a poster about her father, Jack Burton – and was taken by surprise to find her Grandma Smart, her mother Alice and her Uncle Jack featured on a poster about West Deeping servicemen, “Boys from the Row”.

WORLD WAR 1 Along with the contents of other family albums, the Smart family photographs (on the previous page) now appear in the book West Deeping remembers 1919, researched and written by Maggie Ashcroft.

The book covers a relatively short time frame in the long history of a small South Lincolnshire community – in the aftermath of the Great War. With a village trail of more than fifty places of interest and a cast of over two hundred characters, it is also a Roll of Honour – commemorating the men of West Deeping who served in the armed forces between 1914 and 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles officially ended the war. The memorials in the village church are simply lists of names, ranks and regiments, but throughout the book there are personal profiles of the servicemen, many linked to where their families lived in the village. Maggie not only wanted to tell their individual stories but to put them into the context of both time and place – to find out how they fitted into the bigger story of West Deeping. So the book starts by drawing on contemporary sources – mainly local newspapers – to describe and portray aspects of life in the village over a hundred years ago. A chapter about “The aftermath of the Great War” records how the village honoured those who served, entertaining the returned heroes and commemorating those who did not. The main section of West Deeping remembers 1919 is a house-by-house directory of the village as it would have been when the surviving servicemen returned home to their families. Information is pieced together as well as is possible a hundred years later – from censuses, directories and newspaper cuttings. 1919 was an important year for West Deeping – but not only because many of its young men returned home from the war. It also brought a new era for West Deeping: an elected Parish Council met for the first time; there was a new headmistress at the village school; a new Rector and a new occupant at the Manor; long-running problems with flooding and poor housing were finally dealt with by installing a new drain and building the first-ever “council” houses. As well as the postcard (sent in 1908) which features on the front cover, there are many illustrations throughout the book: archive images, contemporary postcards, maps and colour photographs of village buildings as they are a hundred years later.

38

The book’s scope may be more limited by the time frame and its structure less conventional than other village histories, but the purpose of West Deeping remembers 1919 is the same – to provide a lasting record of the village’s heritage for twenty-first century descendants, many of whom are now scattered across the country and all over the world. Challenging as it was to fit the personal stories of those people from over a hundred years ago into the wider context of the history of the village at that time, this book represents another act of commemoration.

West Deeping remembers 1919 is on sale for £18.50 at the Deepings Community Library or direct from the author at 32 King Street, West Deeping. Phone: 01778 344768 or 07808 585189 Email: wdheritage@hotmail.co.uk

Craft your own Christmas card

CRAFTS

with Brenda Lobley

When I first started card making a fellow crafter said to me ‘Crafting seriously damages your wealth.’ I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that statement but I found that I loved it so much and wanted to buy ‘everything’. Actually you can spend as much or as little as you like and whatever the cost, it is far outweighed by the pleasure both from making the cards and the pleasure that the recipients get knowing that their card has been handmade, plus the friendship and generosity that bonds all crafters together.

When I made my first card I was thrilled with it, which led me to carrying on making them. I have continued to take great pleasure from card making for four years and looking back can see how much I have improved. I am going to show you how to make an easy, attractive 3D card, using materials which can easily be obtained in Riverside Crafts, our very well stocked local craft shop.

2. Start building the design from the decoupage sheet (using glue gel to give the necessary dimension) using the ‘pop outs’ in sequence A1, A2 etc. This will give a lovely 3D effect.

1. Mat (layer) pale blue cardstock onto silver cardstock and mat on to card blank using double sided tape.

3. If you wish, you don’t need to use all of the ‘pop outs’ for your design. The remainder can be used to extend your ‘stash’ and used towards making another card. However, the 3D effect won’t be as obvious but would still look great.

4. Finished card using all of the decoupage ‘pop outs’ Allow 24 hours for glue to dry

Tip: If using a sentiment stamp then stamp card blank prior to adding design. There is nothing worse than making a lovely card only for it to be ruined by a smudged sentiment! HAVE FUN! For commissions Brenda Lobley 07954895280

MATERIALS 1 15cm x 15cm white card blank with matching envelope 1 13.5 x 13.5 silver cardstock 1 12cm x12cm pale blue cardstock Adapt the size of the above card/ cardstock according to your choice of decoupage sheet

Foiled/non foiled decoupage sheet This card also looks good without using the silver/pale blue backing cardstock. Also there is no need to round the corners of the cardstock. Glue gel for adding dimension Double sided tape 41

EASTERN SURPRISE!

Radde’s Warbler in Deeping... nearly! Words and photos by Will Bowell As regular viewers of my blog will be aware, I do like to see rare birds, the ones that get blown off course and end up in far and distant shores, away from their intended destination. Indeed, at the end of September, I enjoyed a wonderful week on the Shetland Isles, finding and chasing rare birds and what a week it was. I saw three new birds for my planet earth list (including being the second person to see Britain’s 5th Tennessee Warbler) and three species of whales including the mighty Humpback and the charming Orca! But I digress; I had only been back home for less than 24 hours when my good friend Mike Weedon called to say our pal Jonathan Taylor thought he had found a Radde’s Warbler, near Peakirk by the Folly! OK, so you don’t know what a Radde’s Warbler is. It’s a small brown warbler, named after Mr Radde, I would imagine. That doesn’t sound exciting, does it? Radde’s Warblers come from central and eastern Siberia and should have been en-route to southern Asia for their winter hols. They have bright orange feet, apricot coloured undertail converts (that’s its bum to you and me) and a funky yellow flash above the eye. When we arrived on site JT was frantic, pumped on the unique adrenalin rush finding a ‘rare’ gives you. I heard it but sadly, despite several hours of searching, there was no sign. Mike and JT stayed till near dusk and heard it once more after hours of nothing. This was clearly going to be a tricky one.

whole day, despite attracting a steady stream of socially distancing birders from near and as far as Oxford and London. The following day, it popped out on my arrival, as if it knew it was my birthday, let me get some photos and then promptly disappeared for hours at a time. Our friend Hugh had been in Yorkshire for the first two days of its stay but thankfully came back on the Tuesday to enjoy superb views on a couple of occasions. But for the most part of the day, he stood staring at a bush, willing for it to come out. On Tuesday 6th it had started to range more during the day, being seen on both sides of the Folly and with a clear start to the night, there was no sign the next day. Presumably it had continued on its journey having fed well at the bush diners of Peakirk! Radde’s reach Britain in small numbers every year; normally only about 10 a year, but this autumn has been a good ‘un. As far I’m aware, there has only been one other inland record, in Bedfordshire in 1991. Being a first for Cambridgeshire, it certainly made the ‘Cambs lot’ make the trek up to our neck of the woods

and over the course of its stay around 100 observers came to Peakirk. Not all of them saw it though! So why was it such a good autumn for these Siberian beauties? In the last week of September an easterly airflow coming all the way Asia hit Britain. At first, it hit mostly the Northern Isles and but by the weekend, it also hit the east coast of mainland Britain and with it many rare birds from Asia and Siberia arrived in a ‘fall’ of common migrants. The truth is most rare birds are found on the coast because this is where they make first landfall and where the most observers therefore search. Some must filter inland but this Radde’s Warbler showed how hard they can be to see one inland, even if you know where they are! It’s amazing to think such a small bird (size of a Robin) weighing just 15g can make it all the way from eastern Siberia to Britain. The odds against it must be huge, yet every year birds end up going in the wrong direction and hit our shores. What’s even more amazing is that this lost waif, rather than spend a winter in Thailand, clearly would rather be in Deeping... nearly!

There is something else you need to understand about Radde’s Warblers; there are two flavours. There are the show offs which are easy to see, hanging out on the edge of the bush or there is the don’t-comeout-of-a-bush, ever, not ever, not even once variety. This individual belonged to the latter crowd and indeed the next day was seen just four times in the

The Georgians feature in our October issue inspired a lot of memories....

THE GEORGIANS

The Georgians was the venue for the 50th wedding anniversary of Joyce & Arthur Holmes of the Imperial Cafe.

Looking for Betsy Betsy was a 1974 mini 1000. Registration GNX 669N Ruth Ellis sold her in 1988 to a man living in Deeping for his children’s nanny. Betsy was living with Ruth in Farcet prior to her sale. She would love to know what happened to her. Her last tax was due in 1992 (info from dvla) Any information please call 01778348859

Well known local photographer and landscape gardener, John Parsonage found this reciept for his parents wedding reception, Vera Penney and Harold Parsonage. It was signed by Barratt Haines who owned and ran the Georgians at that time. Later Barrett and wife Judith came to live opposite the family when he purchased the field on which the Willows now stands on Peterborough Rd., Deeping Gate. This was around the same time Vera passed away (John was 2) and Barratt lost his son, Andrew to a hole in his heart (aged 3). Due to these difficult circumstances and being neighbours John and Barrett became the very best of friends. A strange twist of fate in many ways but he had a massive positive impact on the young John.

WALK

A local Walk from West Deeping by Paul Bragg

At the time of writing Covid-19 restrictions limit us to six people: driving to another location and finding parking for up to six cars becomes a problem. So we keep our village walks to the local area. We find that these walks are important for keeping us in contact and for the companionship they create. This walk starts in West Deeping by St. Andrew’s Church and takes in Tallington, Maxey Cut, Lolham and back to the village by The Mill House – approximately 4.6 miles. You can go either way to see it from another direction. There’s always a chance to see a heron or egrets along the Cut, as well as a variety of wild flowers. Going south over the Lolham railway crossing, there is a benchmark carved into the bridge on the left-hand side. This is used for taking measurements from other benchmarks in the area to set a height from mean sea level. The walk takes just under two hours.
