Welcome

Teamwork is always a wonderful thing and many alliances between local Charities that have been formed during the Pandemic continue to bear fruit. Earlier this year the Lions Club of the Deepings formed a partnership with The Deepings Community Centre and Sense to develop sensory areas within the Centre’s garden. A garden, accessible and enjoyable for the whole community, with features that can be enjoyed specifically by people with complex disabilities, many of whom have felt more isolated after the recent restrictions, was planned. Rotary and Round Table have been involved in the project as well with donations from members of the public, SKDC, the Town and Parish Councils and DSJ United Charities. Material donations have come from Mick George, Jamie Brews Garden Services, Sue & Bob Titman and Towngate Tyres. Members of Deeping Youth Group plan a mural with this summer’s artist in residence, Emily Bowers. The garden remains a work in progress and if you wish to help fund the project, please send donations by bank transfer to: The Deepings Lions Club CIO, Sort Code: 20-63-28, Account No. 83634442 or by cheque payable to The Deepings Lions c/o The Deepings Community Centre, 2 Douglas Road, Market Deeping, PE6 8PA. During lockdown Lora Edwards of award-winning Happy Tails Dog Walking decided to sell unwanted items to families walking past her home last year for Three Counties Dog Rescue. Not only did she make a good friend, Michelle Sparkes, in the process, who helped sell items online as well, but the pair raised an eye popping £13,000 and enjoyed watching others benefitting from the opportunity to socialise at the gate.

A. Payne & Co Candles are now lit for the atmosphere that they create and the scents that fill the home but when Queen Victoria was contemplating her wedding in 1840, candles were a necessity. It was a tradition for every loyal household in the land to burn a candle in their front room window on the evening of the monarch’s wedding and on 20th February of that year most people would have lit a Prices candle from a newly created mix of refined tallow and coconut oil. This was a great improvement for the vast majority of the population who could not afford beeswax used in the church and by the wealthy, as most people used tallow lights made from hoarded animal fat, with rush wicks. It was Prices candles that Abraham Payne would peddle in the Deepings as an employee of John Osbourne of Daventry. It was here that he met his future wife, Mary Tomlin, daughter of Tobias, baker of 23 Bridge Street, Deeping St James. They married in 1857 when he was 26 and moved to Bourne where their son, Amos was born in 1859. They then moved to Church Street, Market Deeping, where their second son Richard Robinson was born in 1861, and Abraham set about building his own business as a candle maker, a chandler, in his own right. An ambitious man, he moved his family to larger premises in Chatteris and it was here that daughter Mary was born in 1863. The family grew along with the size of the business and there were six more

children, with a nurse and domestic employed to help. Sadly son Amos died in Chatteris at the age of 17 and by 1891 the family had returned to the Market Place, Market Deeping, where they ran a draper’s and grocery business with son Henry (26) a grocer, having trained to be a draper in Staines in Middlesex. The emporium now sustained two assistants in the grocery, Jabez Grant and Harry Seekins, and a domestic, Sarah Chesterfield. Meanwhile Richard moved to Glinton where he and his sister Mary also ran a grocery and draper’s employing Frank Wilderspin and James Beindge as grocers’ assistants. Sadly Richard died at the age of just 31 in 1892 and Frank took over the running of the business, keeping it in the Payne family with his marriage to Elizabeth Payne at St Guthlac’s Church in 1897. Not all the family stayed in the Deepings. Alwin and Ebenezer emigrated to Australia and Abraham became a tailor’ cutter in Hornsey. But father Abraham continued to build the business, adding millinery to the services he offered, employing Anne Payne from Raunds as a milliner’s assistant with Grace Freeman from Horsegate as her apprentice. Arthur Browning from Northorpe was employed in the grocery. Ever looking to diversify, Abraham had been over enthusiastic and was summoned for the keeping of gunpowder in 1904, not having registered that he held stocks, as required by the 1883 Explosives Act. The shop was getting bigger and busier and in 1905 moved to larger premises in Church Street, now occupied by the Opticians, Osteopaths and Red Cross Shop. Frank and Elizabeth took over the day-to-day running of the shop while their daughter Constance (11) was at school. Mary Harband from Yorkshire was employed as a milliner and Ethel Steed served as the domestic help. Abraham, living next door, kept a weather eye on the business; he employed Flora Green as a housekeeper and Marguerite Green as a milliner.

It was only natural that such an establishment would be targeted by criminals. One such was James Russell of Stratford who received three months hard labour at Bourne Sessions in 1910 for stealing a jacket and vest valued at ten shillings and sixpence which was hanging outside the shop. PC Darcy had seen the culprit and arrested him. Abraham died in 1916 leaving a personal estate of £1,195 and his business and property worth £3,562. When Mary, an invalid, died in 1920, his children received equal shares in the business, with the proviso that if they sold the shares it was to be to another family member. Now the Wilderspins took over at the helm, the business going from strength to strength. Daughter Constance was married to William Appleton from Nottingham at St Guthlac’s in 1923, wearing an ivory coloured

dress and carrying a horseshoe of orange blossom and heather. Her bouquet was made up lilies and white heather. Bridesmaids Kathleen Payne (cousin) and Molly Smith were in pale cinnamon with shoes and stockings to match, carrying shower bouquets of tea roses. Their pearl and gold initial bracelets were gifts of the bridegroom. Mr Teake from London was best man and a reception was held at the Church Street premises before the happy couple left for a honeymoon in Scotland, the bride in a navy blue frock coat dress. The bells of St Guthlac’s rang out to mark this auspicious occasion. In 1925, Douglas Taylor, a machinist, and his accomplice Harry Haywood, a bricklayer’s labourer, both from Yorkshire, arrived in Deeping and proceeded to burgle two commercial premises. First was the Peterborough Co-operative Society continued >

FEATURE which yielded little of value and where they left behind nothing but a state of disorder. At Payne & Co they scaled a 12-foot wall, entering the property without disturbing the sleeping Wilderspins. Here they were more fortunate and took a quantity of silver, chiefly heirlooms and a number of wedding presents, after which they quaffed a bottle of port, leaving the empty bottle on the sink in the kitchen. They were apprehended and charged at Bourne Police Court before Councillor J.T. Holmes. Much of the property was recovered and returned to Mr Wilderspin. Grace Freeman, whose parents ran a grocery shop in Horsegate became an increasingly important part of the enterprise, becoming the manageress of the drapery department in the 1920s. These were the days when this shop was the largest establishment in the Deepings; local centenarian Nancy Titman remembers: “In those days the shop seemed large and lofty, the drapery department was stocked with every kind of garment and all sewing requirements. Miss Freeman with her auburn hair was always immaculate, presiding over her department with authority, often terrifying young assistants who were never allowed to waste a second! She was an excellent saleswoman who knew her customers personally and her advice was usually taken.” When Miss Freeman went on one of her buying trips to London she bought with particular clients in mind, assuring her customers were always dressed in the best of taste and the latest fashion. Says Nancy, “It was fascinating to watch Miss Freeman handling the rolls of material on the polished counter with the brass rule let into the wood; she would deftly unfold the appropriate amount of cloth measuring it along the rule, making the required measurement before rapidly and expertly sliding open the scissors along to cut the fabric.” Grace Freeman died at Stamford Hospital in 1953 leaving a not inconsiderable estate of £1,214. Mr and Mrs Wilderspin did not work in the shop but made sure that it was run efficiently by their employees. However, it was Mr Wilderspin himself who called on regular customers for their weekly order. Where other trades people used a horse and cart, Mr Wilderspin would use his own car and deliveries would be in a motor van. He would be welcomed to the front door by the housewife and after removing his hat and making 18

the usual pleasantries he would sit at the table taking an order book from his Gladstone bag, removing the cap from his fountain pen and awaiting the list. When the customer paused, he would have a list of necessities and goods that he reeled off to remind her or prod her into further requirements. The goods would arrive the next day delivered by Percy Tilley, the grocery warehouse manager. He was from West Deeping where he was born at the start of the century and had married Constance Rouse at Stamford Registry Office in 1924. He was never seen on deliveries without his cap. Conveniently the couple lived next door to the Wilderspins with their daughter Sylvia who was born in 1925. By 1939 Elizabeth Wilderspin’s brother Henry moved in with the couple, working for the business as a commercial traveller. The family continued to employ a maid, and at this time it was Jessie Porter. Abraham’s son, also Abraham, had built up his own tailor’s business in London, supplying six shops, while also becoming a major shareholder in Payne & Co in Market Deeping. When he married Catherine Brophy from Australia in Dalston in 1894, his sister, Elizabeth, had been a witness at the wedding. The couple had five children and employed several servants to help with their care. Following in his entrepreneurial father’s footsteps, Abraham became a Colonial Textile Merchant and was given the Freedom of the City of London. When he died aged 73 while visiting South Africa, Payne & Co was sold to Dudeney & Johnson, the Wilderspins moving to Nottinghamshire to be near to their daughter. Frank died in 1946 leaving a healthy £7,950 to his wife, who died in 1965 in Sussex. Percy Tilley carried on working for the new owners. He died at home in Godsey Crescent where he had moved on his retirement leaving £3,171. Constance died relatively recently in 1995.

Derek Abel - artist Raise the latch on the five-bar gate, walk across the gravel drive and knock on the door of the old boat house, the studio of watercolourist Derek Abel. ‘Come in!’ he would shout and you would put your finger on the conveniently placed hole which in turn raised the internal wooden bar and released the door – and there you were, surrounded by wooden settles, pots of paint brushes, interesting archaeological finds and plenty of dried flower heads and, if you were lucky you would be treated to the company of the resident robin who would pop in to share the Bombay Mix that Derek would often have for lunch. Derek sat at an old desk just inside the door looking out of the window onto the ancient apple and pear trees in the garden and in turn over to the tower of the Priory Church. Watching the changing seasons was inspiration for this gentle artist whose watercolours in pastel hues, the honey stone of the Deepings, the terracotta of his beloved Venice and the worn red brick of Cambridge were the colours of his life. We would sit and plan events, the garden trail of the Deepings, the celebration of courtship and marriage, the festival of parish maps – the programmes and posters were all illustrated by Derek’s quirky line drawings that teased out the small details that were actually the big details! He was spotted too by the

publisher of the magazine Best of British and his unique illustrations worked their way across the pages of this popular monthly. We chatted about fellow Parish Councillors and the quirks and characteristics that predated Dibley! Here Derek hatched his largest scheme, to have the lamp taken from the top of the Cross, cobbles and bollards laid and uplighters installed with signage to explain the history of the monument, just across the road from the Studio. It had been Derek’s mission to have the dignity of the Cross restored after the Parish Council had had

it made into a street light in 1894 as one of the first acts of the newly founded Council. The ribbon cutting was planned in this very studio and it was here that Radio 4 newsreader, John Timpson, who had written about this very unusual lamppost in his book Timpson’s England, was entertained when he came to cut the ribbon after the works were completed. It was in this studio too that Deepings Heritage was founded; the preservation of vernacular architecture was a passion of Derek’s. It was the motivation behind much of his work to preserve with paint on paper the buildings of the past that he loved. This extended to a love of archaeology as well and he spent many holidays with wife Pat and his son Chris field walking in Thetford Forest in Norfolk.

He was born in 1924 in Bury St Edmunds, an only child who whiled away many hours exploring the Suffolk countryside, turning to sketching at a very early age during the recurrence of health problems he suffered throughout his life, having fallen on his back

while being carried as a child. The first drawing that came to the attention of his parents and a teacher at Culford School was a pencil sketch of a dog’s head in 1939. He was advised to take a postal art course and he started to make architectural studies of his home town, a subject which remained his greatest love. A big step forward came with a spell of topical cartooning for the Bury Free Press. The town at that time was still occupied by the American forces, so he had plenty of scope! Regaining the use of his legs he studied for some time at the Norwich School of Art. It was at this time that he discovered the Norfolk Broads and developed a love of sailing. For a time Derek worked for the Civil Service but found it too restrictive for his creative personality and he instead entered the world of the publishing, working in advertising in Kettering and Wisbech. His

work took him to Spalding in 1953 and it was while he was working at the Free Press that he met Pat, who was to become his wife after a whirlwind courtship lasting just a week! They married in 1954 and enjoyed many holidays together – there was a racing dinghy on Barton Broad, a trip to Venice in an Isetta Bubble Car, and a hair-raising trip to Austria on a Vespa scooter. The couple came to Deeping St James in 1962 where Derek’s second career in painting took off! He gave art classes for adults at the Gleed School in Spalding and was soon busy locally. Many homes in the Deepings boasted at least one of his watercolours, many still do! The days that led up to Christmas would see him bent over his desk burning the midnight oil with Pat coming in from the kitchen with cups of Earl Grey to sustain him. There were many delighted locals who unwrapped a Derek Abel original on Christmas morning. A great opportunity

arose after he had painted a cover for Cambridge Pride magazine; he was spotted by a gallery in King’s Parade in Cambridge and was commissioned by many notables including the Royal Family. A series of hand-coloured prints of the colleges and bridges in Cambridge was followed by a series of cartoons. He worked for galleries in Ely and in Norwich and in 1998 he contributed over 40 illustrations for the book, Wisbech – forty perspectives of a Fenland town. For Derek the perfect day would be to drive into the countryside, Pat by his side, and sit for hours at an easel, capturing the essence of a place on paper while Pat, a talented embroideress herself, would sit and stitch – and there was always something tasty for lunch! DEEPINGS BARGAIN HUNT

Under the hammer for charity! It’s October so it must be time for the annual Deepings Bargain Hunt held at Market Deeping Antiques, with auctioneer Jessica Wall from Stamford Auction Rooms overseeing the proceedings and photographer Stuart Render on hand with his camera. This year the team from Godsey Lane Coffee, Adrian and Janetha, had travelled just across the road for the event and they had chosen Sue Ryder as their charity to benefit. Emily and Janet were the opposing team from Creative Touch, choosing Mind as their charity. I’d rather be in Deeping equipped each couple with £50 and the teams set off at pace to search for treasures which they would then sell at auction. Janetha is of Irish descent, her father coming from Cavan, and in one of those quirks of coincidence so does Emily’s partner! So when Janetha spied two Belleek pottery vases discretely decorated with four-leaf clovers and in excellent condition, her interest was piqued. Jessica gave the nod of approval; condition is essential for any ceramics and these vases were collectable. And at the negotiated price of just £15 for the pair she felt that a profit was there to be had. Knowing that the next sale on 27th November has a designer theme and aware that at the moment designer glass is having a purple patch, Jessica suggested that the Danish Orrefors candle holder with its sleek lines and with an appeal for younger buyers would be a good buy. Adrian and Janetha snapped this up at the reduced from £12.95 price at just £10! Meanwhile Emily and Janet had come upon a cluster of hand-painted Poole Pottery items. An avid collector of the 60s Delphis range of orange pottery, Janet was very tempted, and when the vendor generously included a later copy of a pottery inhaler for the generous price of £6.50 the sale was made. The hand-painted Poole Pottery vase at £7.50 also made the cut.

l-r Jessica and dog Mouse, Emily & Janet -Creative Touch, Adrian & Janetha - Godsey Lane Coffee There was a distraction for the couple – a pair of vintage Sunny Jim Rag Dolls playing to Emily’s fondness of the name (her Grandfather’s and sons) Forces wheat flakes advertising memorabilia from the 30s or 40s was immediately overshadowed by the handmade wooden Victorian rocking crib and this, reduced to just £10 from a ticket price of £24, was too good a bargain to miss. Jessica highlighted the saleability of the item which was in good condition and perfect for collectors to use to display their teddies or dolls. Janet was taken with the tactile nature of the wood – the sale was made! Animals crafted into jewellery or other functional items are very popular at the moment and so the little donkey lighter was deemed by Jessica to be very collectable. With Christmas on the horizon this was a good find and the price negotiated down from £12.50 to just £7 made its way into Adrian and Janetha’s haul. The couple had looked at a glass Wedgwood bird at £8.95, but Jessica pointed out that she would normally sell these as part of a larger group and so the couple settled on a bird place setting with the appearance of metal at £5. The most unusual purchase of the day went to the couple from Godsey who immediately continued >

23

DEEPINGS BARGAIN HUNT replaced a choice of a chrome jaguar ashtray which would have been a part of automobile memorabilia at auction. Instead they chose ‘the lesser known green mirror bird’. As a gesture to the charity the vendor reduced the price from £20 to £15 and Jessica was delighted – a real talking point on sale day! Keen Poole collector, Janet had to be dissuaded from buying a beautiful Poole bowl for herself. Jessica testified that the design was very popular at the moment and the piece was highly collectable and at £5 a very attractive price as well. It was hastily put with the Creative Touch’s cluster of items on the counter. Emily and Janet completed their purchases with a striking enamel and crystal scarab beetle brooch, and a highly giftable cloisonné pill box with an enamel brandy decanter label, reduced to just £8.50 for the pair.

Collected together and carefully wrapped, the collection will make its way to Stamford Auction Rooms for the sale on 27th November. It is possible to register and bid online on www.stamfordauctionrooms.com

More names for Deepings WW1 Roll of Honour

WW1

Maggie Ashcroft We knew in 2014 that our task wasn’t finished! Local and family historians had set themselves the challenge of finding the names from Market Deeping, Deeping St James, West Deeping and Deeping Gate to be included in a 21st century memorial to all those who had taken part in the Great War of 1914 to 1919. The resulting Roll of Honour for the Deepings took up 26 pages when it was published as part of a commemorative booklet The Deepings remember 1914 to 1918 and it included 420 names – 126 of whom had lost their lives. A second edition, four months later, added another 7 people. Although the centenary events are over, throughout the year and from all around the world, people are still looking at the online Roll of Honour – the record of the men from the Deepings who took part in the worldwide conflict – and adding more names and (in some cases) portraits to go with them. In March 2021 the Shillaker family, who lived in Church Street, Market Deeping, were delighted to find Private Robert A Shillaker commemorated on the Deepings Heritage website. His son, now in his 90s, might not remember his father but his grand-daughter sent an unusual crayon portrait, showing him in army uniform. Research for West Deeping remembers 1919 uncovered many more people linked to the village than were recorded on the commemorative scroll in the church. One was the rector Reverend Percy Gore Graham, who came to West Deeping in 1918 after serving during the war as a Chaplain to the Forces; another was the new owner of West Robert A Shillaker (1897 - 1935) born in Market Deeping, Deeping Manor, William served in the Royal Field Artillery Edward Porter, who had

served as a Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire Regiment, both in Ireland during the Easter Sinn Fein Rising in 1916 and in France as Brigade Transport Officer. There was quite a lot of information about the war years for the Mason family, who lived in The Row in West Deeping, which could be included in the book. But it was only recently, in September 2021, that the great granddaughter of Joseph Mason got in touch with more information. Joseph had been born in West Deeping in 1872, but he’d got a job at the Cavendish Arms in Tallington by 1891, and ten years later was fighting with one of the Lancers Divisions in the Boer War. Although he returned to this area after his military service, he was in Kent by the time he re-enlisted with the East Kent Buffs Labour Corps and went to serve in France. Evidently no-one in West Deeping thought to include his name on the village Roll of Honour in 1919. Now, it feels only right to include anyone who was born here as well as those with strong family ties or who lived or worked here at the time. Maybe Joseph’s parents had his photographs displayed on the mantelpiece of their tiny cottage in The Row? At any rate, the photograph taken during the First World War is now alongside his name in Joseph Mason (1872 - 1931) born in West Deeping; served in the the latest version of the Lancers during the Boer War c.1901 and in the East Kent Buffs Deepings Roll of Honour. during WW1 continued >

31

WW1 The portrait taken during the Boer War is really quite splendid. The online and most upto-date version of the Roll of Honour can be found on the websites for Deepings Heritage and West Deeping Heritage Group. In October 2021, the number of names stands at 442. It was revised only a few weeks ago, after Dale Burton in Australia emailed copies of military records he’d discovered after researching his DNA links. Several Burtons and Lamberts are already listed in the Roll of Honour, but he’d found two members of the Geeves family (some of whom still live in Market Deeping) and one of the Deeping Gate Lambert family - who needed to be added. The military pension ledger for Frank Geeves, who had served with the Machine Gun Corps, showed that he lived at “Mill Cottage, Market Deeping”. If this was

32

on Broadgate Lane, it was demolished in the 196os. Even more interesting was one of the documents for William Geeves, of “Mill House, Market Deeping”. He was serving with the Artists Rifles Brigade when he was taken prisoner at Lechelle, near Arras in Northern France in March 1918 and interned at one of the German camps at Munster. The details behind the names can lead in all sorts of directions – but there is not enough space here! Although the stories are not recorded on the Roll of Honour, it is possible to access the personal profiles compiled by the researchers for the Deepings remember 1914 to 1918 exhibition. Contact either of the Heritage groups via our websites, to share or get access to more information. Waving at Magpies with Ray Pawlett

Many people know about the superstition of waving at magpies. The idea is that if you see a single magpie, it will bring you sorrow unless you wave at it. As with all superstitions, there are many variations. When I was younger, one of the older people that my Mum knew from the fens talked to me about magpies. She said that it was a good idea to wave at single magpies but not to get rid of bad luck. She said that when magpies find a mate, they keep the same partner for the rest of their lives and that if you see a single magpie that the chances are it has lost its mate. So, the old lady’s idea was that instead of being focused on my own sorrows, the focus should be on making the magpie feel a little bit better by being friendly to it. This was just a bit of fun really, but looking back on the story, it can be interpreted in some interesting ways.

The story also reminds me of an ancient Taoist technique called ‘the inner smile’. When we learn how to create a smile from the heart as a matter of routine, we generate a feeling of positivity around ourselves that becomes tangible and helps others to relax and feel better.

The emphasis was not upon my own emotions but on making the magpie feel better. A good lesson for modern times, I would say! To shift the focus of a child from themselves to an awareness of their inter-connectedness with nature in a playful way was indeed a crafty trick!

Then – guess what happens! The smile comes back to you – except it’s grown a bit. The smile that you send out always finds its way back to you.

The wise folk from indigenous and traditional people around the world say the same thing. If we learn to shift our focus away from our own gratification to what we can do to help the world that we live in then we will be a lot happier.

So, at 53 years old, do I still wave at magpies? With the possibility of it bringing greater happiness, connection to nature and less self-centeredness – you bet I do! Try this inner smile exercise:Sit quietly for a moment. Think of a day when you were REALLY happy. Remember that day with all of your senses – vision, smell, taste, touch. Actually smile! Force a big cheesy grin on to your face. Notice how your heart feels different – slightly uplifted from doing the smile. Get out there and smile at someone – or a magpie! The inner smile is just one of a whole range of Taoist exercises and treatments to help you feel better with your body, mind and spirit. BIRDS

Remember, Remember to Love November!

November doesn’t have to be a dull start to winter for wildlife lovers by William Bowell As a youth, I remember November visits to North Norfolk looking for birds and being disappointed; I remember visiting local gravel pits around Deeping and them being empty and I remember walks through silent woodland. Coupled this with the weather becoming grim, often wet and windy and not forgetting the nights being long, I have to confess I’m just not a November fan. In truth, dear reader, November has always been my least favourite month. After an autumn full of exciting and rare migrants, the cold, short days of November seem dull to me. Summer migrants have long gone and the spectacle of numbers from the north that winter brings isn’t quite in yet. The miracle of migration is at a standstill and at a crossroads and everything else is hiding... or is it? In an effort to challenge my pre-existing, childhoodbuilt prejudices against the month of November, I did a bit of delving back into my old notes and photos from the eleventh month. Turns out, dear reader, I was wrong; November is actually a really very good month for wildlife watching! Perhaps I was right that the local gravel pits and scrapes on the North Norfolk coast were relatively empty but the hedgerows rarely are this month. Thrushes

Waxwing 38

pour in, in their tens of thousands, from Scandinavia. Desperate to gobble our berries, a stiff north east breeze in early November is an ideal condition for these song birds to make the North Sea crossing. The ‘chack chack’ call of the Fieldfare or the ‘tsweep’ of a Redwing are a familiar sound in the hedgerows around Deeping and if we are really, really lucky Waxwings, with their funky hair-dos join the party. A drive around the Fens should also reveal flocks of Whooper Swans, arriving on the same winds, and these often attract grey geese that belong on the coast. Talking of the coast, let’s not forget by the end of November, Donna Nook, Blakeney Point and Horsey will all be teaming with visitors looking for their cute fix as the Grey Seals’ pupping season starts. Who can resist those big black eyes and silky off-white fur? A strong northerly in winter will also pull in another northern bird, which in my opinion rivals the Seals for their cuteness. Little Auks (or Dovekies if you prefer) belong in Arctic waters but strong winds blow them down the east coast of Britain and some end up on coastal lagoons, where they often prove to be very tame. With their short parrot-like bills, large black eyes and black and white plumage, they look like rather cute Penguins, and with their hint of rarity factor, they make a blustery November Little Auk day on the coast worth a visit. Of course, these winds we get in November bring in other seabirds and some will end up inland and even in our area. Shags, a smaller version of the familiar Cormorant, are the most likely to end up on the

Snow Bunting Welland along the Highbank but the colourful and descriptively named Red-breasted Merganser is a close second. Back on the coast, flocks of Snow Buntings shuffle on the beaches and salt marsh, eating tiny seeds, and are sometimes accompanied by the rare Shorelark. These larks have a sandy plumage that matches their surroundings but with yellow and black markings and ‘horns’ which give them their other name: Horned Lark. I recommend Holkham Gap in Norfolk for these gems where by the end of the month there will also be 100,000 (yes - one hundred thousand) Pink-footed Geese. The sight and sound of these wild geese is a thing to behold, as they gather at dusk. In our local river, with the reeds falling back, Otters and Kingfishers suddenly become that bit easier to find and Goosanders return, which add yet more colour to that dull and damp November morning.

BIRDS

the Atlantic and both had only been recorded less than ten times in Britain, each.

As I’m sure I have mentioned once or twice, I do love seeing new and rare birds that have travelled great distances to reach our shores. There is an expression in birding, ‘the big one travels alone’, meaning the really rare one will appear after everything else. I will never forget one November day, heading to deepest Cornwall for the day (as you do) for an American Bittern and an American Green Heron both within a few miles of each other. Both had travelled across

And I also remember with a fondness visiting east Norfolk on a crisp winter’s day and American Green Heron watching a Desert Wheatear from North Africa feeding just a few feet away, maybe having never seen a human before, whilst just over the dunes the haunting calls of Grey Seals with their pups filled the air. Or what about the time when I cycled down to Deeping Lakes and found a Long-tailed Duck, blown off course from its usual marine habitat, giving among the very best views I have ever had of the species,

only a few mornings after I had witnessed my first Great Northern Diver locally on Deeping Highbank, another winter marine species which was a truly outstanding sight. All unforgettable November days which remind me of how much I absolutely love November... Well, what’s the point in having a mind if it can’t changed? Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.

FIVE GREAT POST OFFICES Lockdown, the fading away of the banks and the growing preference to shop local has led to a resurgence in the importance of the Post Office in the heart of our communities. Here - they have risen to the challenge!

Sams Can oak trees grow from off-licences? They certainly can in the case of Sam’s, at top of Rycroft Avenue, Deeping St James. Forty-one years ago the proverbial acorn was planted there, and hasn’t it grown? From humble beginnings, Sam’s now services most of the ‘bottom’ half of Deepings, in a fairly recently refurbished shop and Post Office. In a time when dedicated High Street Post Offices are closing, it’s a welcome relief to have one at such a heart of the community. Sending parcels or paying in money to your account is as easy and painless as it should be, but with the additional bonus of being able buy something for your tea at the same time! Si Fox

Northborough For over 60 years there has been a Post Office and store on the corner of East Street in Northborough, providing a hub for the village. With its landmark Christmas tree, scarecrow in the recent trail and very well-attended Macmillan Coffee mornings and cake sales there is no difference now that it has become a One Stop Store in a bold move for family owners (of 30 years) Yogi, Sharon and son Dev six years ago. Service with a smile at the Post Office is provided by AnneMarie and Katie whose counter behind the vases of fresh flowers is a welcome for all. Newspaper deliveries are provided in Maxey and Northborough and grocery deliveries can be made for those unable to get to the shop. 40

Langtoft There has been a PO in Langtoft for many years, maybe almost 100! The PO has had many Postmaster/ Mistresses but is now managed by the lovely Harjinder Kaur, Harj for short. Harj has two daughters and previously worked as a Special Constable. After a short closure of the shop and PO, Harj opened up for general groceries in 2019. After some difficulties the PO opened for business in June 2020. Then came COVID lockdown! During this time the PO remained open and Harj and her wonderful staff and volunteers delivered groceries and collected parcels, providing a very much appreciated service for those unable to leave their homes. Many services have been put in place like a coffee machine, hot food, FWIP Gelato and Sorbet dispenser, and newspapers and magazines. Local produce is also stocked wherever possible – Nelson and Grasmere meat, and Askers of Stamford bread. You can even collect your prescriptions from Hereward Medical Centre in Bourne from the shop. All in all, a brilliant local PO and shop right on our doorstep! Long may it continue; thank you Harj and staff! Liz Jarman

Baston

Market Deeping Hitesh and Bharti have added a touch of magic to the store in the centre of the residential area of Market Deeping. The store we have all known as the Spar has become a Londis store and has added a Post Office counter to increase the facilities available for customers. There was a hue and cry from locals when the last Post Office close to the Market Place closed down before Christmas but now this alternative is able to offer so much more! Food to go, extensive chill cabinets, hot coffee and the lottery as well as an extensive range of groceries. Opening times are generous too - from 7.00am-9.00 pm Mon-Sat and 9.00 am-9.00pm on Sundays.

Harking back to a previous age when customer was king, the Post Office and General Stores in Baston were filling a cardboard box with provisions from a customer had called through when I visited the shop to find out why they had had won Retailer of the Year in the Deeping Business Awards. The shop delivers to Baston, Langtoft, Greatford, Braceborough and Wilsthorpe, putting the convenience into the convenience store! Cooked meats from Alec Day Butchers in Bourne are delivered to the shop daily along with fresh fruit and veg. Sausages and burgers are from Grasmere. French sticks and a variety of pastries are baked on the premises. There is a dry cleaning service and coffee, and tango ice blast to go. There are innovative ideas aplenty! Parking space is generous and just outside the store – perfect access for the elderly! The shop is open 5.30-6.30pm M-Sat & 9.00-4.00 pm on Sunday. WINNER
