Deepings Community Library now has a new manager. Tui Girdlestone is settling into her role and is keen to ensure that all the established popular library activities continue to run smoothly. As ours is a Community Library, primarily managed and staffed by volunteers and we are keen to hear from our members about how we can extend our range of provision to meet the needs of all Deepings residents.

Group is currently working collaboratively across the Deepings in conjunction with the Town and Parish Councils to support active travel (primarily walking) by provide more public benches at convenient resting places. In Deeping we are officially recognised as one of Britain’s ‘Best Walking Neighbourhoods’. Walking brings such considerable health benefits to individuals and communities that we are continuing to improve the active travel infrastructure as a way of supporting such activity.

After only four years in business, Jo Cooke-Symack of MozzyMak Pest Control has been awarded UK Sole Trader Pest Control Company 2023. With multiple nominations and testimonials from her customers, Jo was delighted to receive the award. Starting with just a few customers, she quickly grew the business. She took intensive training courses and completed all her exams (including RSPH Level 2) and numerous pest control certifications covering legislation, law and human health. The company now has multiple contracts and a thriving business. Covering a wide area, including Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Rutland, Jo is on the road six days a week helping her customers to remain pest free. Says Jo, ‘Everyone thinks pest control is all about killing pests, but it’s not, pest control is about protecting the environment and human health but also being able to

help with customers’ fears and anxiety, from ensuring grain stores at farms are pest free, enabling them to sell their grain to the mills to put bread on our tables, to ensuring moles are not causing trip hazards on football and cricket pitches.’ When asked what her favourite part of the job is, Jo responded ‘I just want to make people happy, whether that be the farmer whom wants a pest-free farm, an auditor who wants their Red Tractor Farms to comply with farm assurance, a domestic customer who has an unwanted pest removed so they can sleep at night, or simply to give advice and assurance to someone who asks. I love being the “local” pest control, everyone waving to Skyler (my dog) and me in my little blue van. Every day is a different day in pest control and to spend my days outside in all weathers enjoying

Basket Making in the Deepings

There was a time when osiers and basket making was to Deeping what coals are to Newcastle. Every street in Deeping St James had a basket maker whose products were used to gather fruit, for shopping and other goods. Every farmer who owned marshy land or land by a river would have an osier bed.

An osier bed is where historically willows were planted and coppiced to produce withies which were used for basket making and fish traps. The willow (Salix Viminalis), known as the common osier, was commonly used for this purpose. The marshy fringes of rivers, especially those that flooded with small islands, alts, eyots or holts like the River Welland were the most common locations for osier beds. Willow roots would be planted and they would grow easily in moist ground. The willow withies would be cut every one or two years.

The produce of the osier bed or holt were known commercially as rods. Green rods are fresh cut and unpeeled and brown rods are those that have been left to dry their skins. White rods are those which have the bark removed or peeled. Buff rods are produced by boiling brown rods and then peeling them.

Waldram Hall

While the growing of osiers and basket making would have dated back to ancient times in the Deepings (and we still have memories of that today in Osier Farm in Eastgate and Osier Holt in Deeping St James), the first mention of an osier holt we can find was a sale at Waldram Park in 1836. Waldram Hall dates back to the 13th century when it was in the parish of Maxey and described as a farm and an inn – a favourite stopping place for pilgrims on their way to Walsingham. Fitzwilliam Archives in Northampton Record Office shows conveyancing of land in Waldram Parks in the 16th century which make reference to osier beds.

Waldram Hall itself fell into a steady decline. In his ‘History of the Fens’, W.H. Wheeler tells us of a ferry from Waldram to Crowland by which time the Hall had been downgraded to a farmhouse. By 1906 it was described as dilapidated but in the 1920s it had a resurgence. It was described as a ‘lovely stone built farmhouse with a red pantile roof, a staircase which went both left and right leading to three bedrooms at the front of the house and two at the back. All of the rooms had stone floors. On the ground floor was a large living room and an equally large pantry. There was a large farmhouse kitchen with two large ovens and from the fireplace hung a large iron cooking pot suspended on a chain. To the rear of the farmhouse was a large orchard and garden.’

The last tenant of the farm was William Parker Clare, who lived here with his family, His daughter, Edith (b.1920) describes the river running past the front of the house where she would play, picnic and fish for tiddlers during the school holidays. She recalled fishing – with a homemade rod and safety pin but never catching anything – with Fred Popple, a well-known Deeping

St James resident and angler. The family moved to a council house in Northborough in the early 1930s luxuriating in running water and electricity. The farm itself was demolished in the 1940s and the stone used for other buildings in the Deepings.

Henry Smith (b.1799) resident of Home Farm, Bridge St, Deeping St James owned osier holts in Eastgate and Welland Bridge and regularly requested that shooting should not take place near the holts where woodcock and snipe would have good cover from predators. He sold his land and fishing rights to Mr Leaf in 1902 ,possibly to concentrate on his core business of farming and butchery. Shortly after the takeover, Fred Bennett, caretaker for Mr Leaf, caught Frank Sanderson trespassing. He was brought before Bourne Sessions and fined 7 shillings – not such a cheap dinner on that occasion!

The Batterhams were names associated with osier beds –William (b.1820), a native of Deeping St James, had started his working life as an agricultural labourer in Spalding where he met and married Alice Jackson. Their son James (b.1854) managed the osier beds in Deeping St James from the family home in Eastgate until he left to work on the railways as his other siblings had done. After Alice’s death in 1878, William sold half of his osier beds. After 15 years as a widower, William married Fanny (aged 40) daughter of

Robert and Sarah Lambert from Frognall. After William’s death in 1898 aged 78, Fanny carried on the business until 1907 when she married Boston farmer, John Speed. The cottage was demolished in the 1930s and numbers 149-153 now occupy the land.

Osier Farm

Osier Farm was mentioned by name in the 1891 census, the home of Crowland-born Alfred James Barron. His father James farmed at Cranmore, Deeping St James, with 110 acres, also in Crowland. where he had a further 21 acres. and from 1871 in Stowgate. Alfred married Rachel Webster of Glinton in 1878 and they had one daughter, Mabel (b.1880). An excellent batsman, Alfred played cricket for Deeping St James. Their house was described as a stone and thatched dwelling standing flush to the pavement with three lower rooms and three bedrooms, pantry with a large garden, and outbuildings comprising a stone-tiled pigsty and barn. The ground across the road was bounded by a dyke and a hawthorn hedge with nut and fruit trees nearest the bank. Over the river bank the osier beds flourished. Walter Pridmore, a nephew, was employed as a farm worker and Kate Coaten and Carrie Makin worked in the house.

In 1911 at the Priory Church, Mabel married Master Mariner, Graham Hutcheson Stewart from Old Fletton. After a honeymoon in Brighton the couple continued to live with the bride’s parents in Eastgate, Graham joining Mabel when he was on leave. They had two sons, Graham (b.1913) and Donald (b.1917). On Alfred’s retirement in 1918, the whole family moved to Holland House, Market Deeping. In October that year R. Longstaff auctioned 6 cart horses, 18 beasts, farming implements, dairy utensils, gears, portable fowl houses and 8 tons of willows. Alfred died of blood poisoning in the following year, aged 74, leaving £885. The family remained at Holland House, Rachel dying in 1830. The couple were remembered as regular churchgoers, Alfred a judge at the annual Root & Foal Show, Rachel the secretary. Mabel died two years after her mother in Colchester while Graham’s home remained Holland House.

Graham finished his working life as a clerk with Peter Brotherhoods but his final trip as

a Captain in the Merchant Navy was on the factory ship, the Southern Harvester where he had been a whale fishery inspector for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Throughout the seven-month-long voyages to the ice barrier in the Antarctic he ensured that the whalers abided by regulations. He was invited to a screening of Hell Below Zero at the Broadway, Peterborough, which chronicled the ship’s activities, and some of his ship mates were extras in the film. Graham died in 1963 in Peterborough.

In 1918 Frank Rosling (1873-1960) and Elizabeth Addy took over Osier Farm from Alfred Barron and in doing so founded a dynasty which would farm in the village for over a century. Frank, born in Norfolk the son of Edward and Lavinia (née Rosling) worked at Hall Farm, Overton, Yorkshire, after leaving school. He returned to the Spalding area where he married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary Walling of Spalding. The couple ran a shop at 59 London Road before a move to Cowbit where they kept a general store. Then they moved to Osier Farm where they purchased more land and kept pigs, hens and a dairy as well as arable land. In 1921 Elizabeth Addy won second prize for her butter making at the Peterborough Show. Their son Reginald (1902-89) had been before Bourne Petty Sessions for carrying a gun without a licence and for riding a bike without lights (!). He married Rosie Merill, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (née Sharp) of Bridge Street in 1924 and they made their home at 41 Eastgate.

Of course, during this time there were the tragedies that often befell farming families. In 1929, Walter Baker, an employee, had his right leg amputated below the knee, a result of being drawn into the flappers of a drum during threshing operations. Two years later in 1931, Frank Snr and Frank Otter found two dead and three sheep badly injured by stray dogs.

All the family helped Mr Harris from Crowland who would come and cut the willows for his basket making business. If he had an urgent

order he would cycle over, cut the willows and cycle back again. Links with the family and Crowland were maintained when Violet (1905-51) married Thomas Morton, a farm foreman and stockman from the village. The youngest daughter, Lavinia (1919-2015) had a Christmas wedding at the Priory to John Speechley in 1942, the couple settling at his farm, The Elms, Crowland Common. In 1927 May (1898-1980) married Francis Stock, farm foreman of Spalding, and the couple settled at 83 Pennygate. In the same year Gladys married Esmond Kisby and moved to Derby where Esmond was a driver for the L.M.S. Frank Jnr (1900-88) settled in Barholm at Grasmere Farm following his marriage to Lucie Sutton in 1928. Further to her nuptials with lorry driver Rupert Day in 1920 Edna (1910- 65) set up home in South Street, Bourne, before moving to Leicester where Rupert died in 1949. Edna later married Harry Jennings in 1955. Rhoda (1916-?) made her home at 44 Church Street after tying the knot with hairdresser, Thomas Coddington. Edith (1877-1986) had become an assistant to a music seller in Overton, Yorkshire where she married market garden owner Cyril Hempstock, retiring to 123 Eastgate.

Elizabeth died in 1948, Frank Snr retiring two years later to live with daughter May and her husband Francis in Spalding. Frank enjoyed a happy retirement; he was a member of Spalding Bowls club and member of the Veterans Club at Ayscoughfee which entailed a three-mile daily walk.

Golden Osier & Basket Co.

Spencer Ames (1892-1979) was born in Peterborough to Spencer and Annie Ames and, like his father trained in the skills of basket making. From the age of 14 he worked in Leighton Buzzard where up to 100 men were employed producing cabbage crates, turnip skeps and other specialised baskets for Covent Garden. Later he worked for Sellars & Son of Wharf Rd., Peterborough, who made baskets from osiers grown at Peakirk.

In 1915, after marrying Priscilla Bird and having a son, Peter joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Service, and was awarded the Victory and British War medals. Later, during the Second World War, he worked at the Ordnance Depot at Walton. Approaching retirement he

decided to return to his original occupation of basket making, founding the Golden Osier & Basket Co. They bought and cleared a damp swampy area of land in Frognall near to the Rose Inn and close to their house on the Spalding Road. Father and son together cleared reeds, weeds, bushes and planted rows of osiers and willows brought from the new wildfowl gardens at Peakirk. They built sheds to store the fast-growing osiers, installed a boiler to boil the canes and made their own equipment to strip and treat the cut willows. When the development of cheap plastic led to the decline of basketry, Spencer stopped production but held on to the land and it was here that his grandsons Kenneth and Tony Payne founded the Ampy Automation Co in the early 1960s. Priscilla died in 1965, Spencer in 1979 and Ampy became world renowned in the manufacture of electricity meters. The company moved to a larger site in Market Deeping and the land was sold for housing

John Conkey was trained as a basket maker by Len Wilcox, who worked the osier beds in Deeping, Northborough and Peakirk (which became the Wildfowl Trust) and the Bluebell Woods which are now part of Nene Park. Len was a third-generation basket maker and John, who had long had an interest in traditional willow work, took up the trade in 1996. Exploring traditional techniques he has made baskets of all shapes and sizes, from shopping baskets to coffins, and he has also tried his hand at willow growing and rush weaving. He is in possession of a pamphlet by Keith and Judy Simpson from Deeping about basket makers in Peterborough. Although there are few professional basket makers working now, John has noticed a resurgence of interest in the craft and he has recently started to teach courses with Nene Coppice and Crafts, sharing the skills and knowledge to help this craft live on and flourish.

Ain’t no mountain high enough?!

The soundtrack to Jim Booth’s life was belted out by Diana Ross in 1970 just when his involvement as a United Nations liaison officer in the Biafran War was coming to end. ‘The blue beret,’ comments Jim, ‘in no way provided security from being shot at!’ The war in Jim’s words ‘with too much starvation and too much death’ came to an end when the Biafrans, wanting to break away from the dominance of Nigeria, ran out of steam. Jim’s journey to Biafra had started when he joined the Royal Navy as PT instructor in 1959; it took nine years to be promoted from Leading Seaman to Petty Officer and so, in a career move, he transferred to the Royal Marines where he became a Colour Sergeant after just three years.

He first saw action in Borneo where British Commonwealth forces fought against Indonesia in a conflict that focused on the future of Brunei and North Borneo. The fighting consisted of small-scale jungle clashes in the border areas, and ended in victory for the Commonwealth. It was during this time that Jim married for the first time. The ceremony was in Singapore and Jim was homebound to the UK via Paris with his Chinese wife when there was a tragic road traffic accident in which she lost her life.

A tour of duty in Aden (now Yemen) followed where there was an insurgency against British rule which hastened British plans for withdrawal.

Of course Jim’s life in the Navy followed the course of British history and so a tour of duty in Northern Ireland followed his time in Nigeria. As an Irishman, Jim could speak Gaelic which proved useful to the British. Affiliated to the Special Forces, initially Jim was stationed in a Joint Sub-Command centre in Londonderry before what became known as ‘The

Troubles’ started in earnest. Jim had married for a second time in 1966, this time to an English girl. Spending hours in surveillance, Jim spent four years in Northern Ireland with few visits home and his marriage floundered as he was limited to what information he could give his wife.

Jim was six months in Belize and then took on the highly paid job as a private security officer for the Sultan of Brunei and then further with the Sultan of Oman – the British Government allowed for a loan arrangement if the fees were covered by the relevant royal families. He

was back in Northern Ireland, though, in the late ‘70’s serving with the Special Boat Services.

Taking a path where he was in the thick of the action, Jim was in the Falklands for six weeks before the British Task Force arrived. So he found himself behind enemy lines, directing shells onto targets. He remembers on one Sunday evening he was under cover in a hedgerow when a farmer appeared with his dog. The dog immediately sensed his presence and would not stop barking in his direction. The farmer hastily made a retreat to reappear and leave a roast lamb dinner on the gatepost. It was the first substantial meal that Jim had had for some time and the plate was licked clean.

In 1982 after serving for 26 years, including his time in the Royal Navy, Jim finally left the forces with a General Services Medal, a Special Forces Medal and latterly a King’s Coronation Medal. His life in the Marines had been a lonely one and sometimes dangerous. He now took the opportunity to return to Nepal to look up old friends from his early days in the forces. He had always enjoyed climbing and in 1964 he had climbed Mount McKinley (Denali), then it was Mount Everest from Tibet. He stayed in Tibet for about a year, coming back to the UK to receive treatment for cancer, first in his eye, then bowel and then his liver and more recently in his thyroid and shoulder. He attributes the success of the treatment that he received to a highly qualified specialist at Peterborough hospital, Elizabeth Drye, who ensured there was no need for a colostomy when he suffered bowel cancer. Jim was not surprised by the cancers that he suffered; as a guinea pig in 1963 in experiments on forces personnel at the chemical defence experimental establishment of Porton Down he has lost many of his colleagues in this way. He received a taxable compensation payout of £8,000 in 2004.

A further blow to his health occurred when he fell off a roof he was replacing in Essendine. He broke his neck, several ribs and his pelvis and was airlifted to the major trauma unit in Nottingham. Not to be deterred, this intrepid individual was back in Nepal in October after the accident had occurred in July.

Jim started a trekking company, Boundless Himalayas and Himalyan Global with his business

partner, Min Thapa. Trekkers are frequently escorted to the world’s highest peaks from Nepal and Tibet, including all the wonders of the high Himalayas. Jim has used his construction expertise jointly to form the Dubung Welfare Organisation to bring running water up the mountain to 300 houses at 1300 metres high, a project which is anticipated will cost more than £1 million or 177 million rupees and for which he is currently raising funds.

A life of service in the British Armed Forces, more than a brush with cancer and surviving a fall from a great height, even at 79, Jim Booth continues to raise the bar – the refrain ‘Ain’t no mountain high enough’ rings as true today as it did over 60 years ago!

Change of season, change of scenery

Jumping into Mum’s car, I had my harness on and Mum clipped my seatbelt on and away we go. I’m Wilson a black Springer spaniel and my Mum owns a pet shop (lucky me!) Today is her day with me and I love these days as we get to go on longer adventures which I can’t wait to share with you.

On this first walk we explore Grimsthorpe Castle. It’s a short 20-minute drive from around the Deepings area, just north of Bourne. I love it when the car slows down and I can smell the great outdoors and know it will be very soon I can jump out of the car and get started on my walkies.

Grimsthorpe Castle is set amongst 3,000 acres of park and woodland. With all this space comes lots of wildlife too. There are deer, cattle and lots of birds and small mammals, and lots of insects and dragonflies. That’s why on this walk I’ll be on my lead. All dogs visiting here are requested to be on a lead so it’s not just me!

she has some treats and pretends to hide them. There is a dog water bowl located outside the Shop and the poop bins are near the Castle.

This is a great walk for my paws with lots of lovely grass and parkland. Plus on a sunny day there’s some good shade too. It’s also nice and quiet once you get walking away from the shop, which is great for other dogs who like to have their own space.

We covered a good 10 mile walk (that’s lots of thousands of doggie steps!) around the parkland today. When you arrive you can pick up a map from the entry huts with different walking routes around the park.

Grimsthorpe is open from April through to October each year and on

select days of the week between 10:30am and 6pm with the last entry at 5pm. There is an entry fee and seasonal passes are available with details on their website.

I have fond memories of accompanying my mum to jumble sales in village halls in the late 80s/early 90s. They may not be as prolific as they once were but buying pre-loved clothes and toys still remains a sensible choice. Not only is it moneysaving, it prevents unwanted items from going to landfill. As our babies grow so quickly, many of the items we buy can look and feel as-new, and may have only been worn once or twice, so opting for pre-loved does not mean settling for lower quality. Jumble sales have evolved into table-top sales, such as those run by Mum2Mum Market, Facebook gifting groups, and charity shops. Below are two other local charitable organisations which each year help thousands of families access pre-loved baby and children’s items. As we start to replace sun hats with woolly ones, please consider using their services for your family’s needs, or by supporting them through donations, or perhaps volunteering your time.

Bumps & Beyond

Operating in Stamford since 2009, Bumps & Beyond offers support to parents and care-givers during and after pregnancy, by equipping them and their children with a full range of donated clothing items, equipment and essential healthcare items. To date, more than ten tonnes of preloved clothing has been sorted and given to those in need. Beginning life in a small cupboard on the site of Stamford Hospital, the charity recently moved into larger premises on Stamford’s West Street Industrial Estate, having secured lottery funding. Vanessa, the incredibly passionate Chair of the Bumps and Beyond Trustees, showed me around and told me more about the plans to further improve the service. Recent fundraising contributions on the night of the Rutland and Stamford Mercury Business Awards will allow more racks, rails, boxes and comfy chairs to be added to the donation and sorting room.

Visitors to the new showroom are greeted with rows of beautifully presented baby and children’s items, from large equipment such as cots, pushchairs and high chairs, to shelves full of toys and books, rails and shelves of clothes, school uniform, shoes, winter coats and maternity wear. A ‘pay what you can’ ethos means that Bumps and Beyond can be accessible for all, no matter what their background or needs.

Hand Me Down Hub

During the pandemic, Hand me Down Hub founder and driving force Kay Marsh started collecting bundles of baby and children’s clothes and items that families were giving away for free via Facebook. She would distribute them to local charities, such as Baby Essentials in Spalding. And so, the Hand Me Down Hub was born! Operating from Kay’s home in Pinchbeck, word soon spread, and Kay became inundated with donations, as well as people popping by to find much-needed preloved items to take home themselves. The Hub soon outgrew Kay’s spare room and she now rents a storage unit to help organise donations.

Keen to make the Hub more accessible for all, Kay visits local baby and parent groups, using her own time and money for petrol. Those who are able to make a donation in exchange for pre-loved items help with running costs and secure the future of the Hub. Kay is very keen to hear from anyone who feels they could regularly volunteer their time to help. Whether sorting or transporting goods, or in the background assisting with admin behind the scenes, if you can help please do get in touch via her Facebook page. Still in its early stages, but with such a dedicated person driving it, there’s no doubt that the Hand Me Down Hub will continue to grow, and help countless local families enjoy the wonderful world of pre-loved.

Having created a carved pumpkin for Halloween, what to do with the pulp and the seeds?

Pumpkin, Ginger and Orange Soup

1 medium onion

1 stick celery

2 cloves garlic

1 thumb sized ginger

2 large oranges

1 kg pumpkin

I medium potato

1.5l veg or chicken stock

Optional

Toasted pumpkin seeds

Natural yoghurt

Dice and fry onion, celery for 6mins

Add garlic and fry 2 more minutes

Add ground ginger

Add zest of one orange

Add diced pumpkin

Add juice of 2 oranges

Add diced potato

Add veg or chicken stock

Season

Cook for 20mins until potato and pumpkin are soft

Blend until smooth

Top with toasted pumpkin seeds and a dollop of natural yoghurt

My Best Birding Day Ever

It’s fast approaching the 20year anniversary of my first experience of remote Scottish islands and indeed my first experience of visiting the big mountain ranges of Scotland. It got me hooked on remote Scottish islands and all started with what to this day remains my best birding day ever.

A drake Harlequin Duck is a thing of true, indescribable beauty. Their blue, white, black and chestnut colours combine to make one of the most immaculate looking birds on the planet. Their far northern hemisphere range makes them difficult to see in their natural habitat, adding to the mythology of the species.

However, the female Harlequin Duck, with all shades of brown, is less than inspiring. But, when one turned up on Lewis, of the Outer Hebrides, in mid-January 2004, it caused quite a stir. Harlequin, despite breeding as close as Iceland, are very rare in Britain, indeed there have only been five records since this bird.

When the bird remained on Lewis in mid-February, my friends Trev and Dan halfjokingly suggested that if the duck was still present at the end of April, then we should for May Day Bank Holiday weekend. But what were the chances of the duck staying?

Well, turns out, pretty good. The last weekend of April came and the bird was in situ and thus a plan was hatched for a long weekend on the Hebrides, for the Bank Holiday!

We set off late Thursday night, car packed with a tent and enough clothes and optics that four birders could pack into a rather small car. Our first destination was Loch Garten, near Aviemore, where we planned to get a couple of hours’ kip in the car before dawn. As you can imagine, dear reader, a small car packed with people and equipment wasn’t the most comfortable space to sleep so dawn mercifully came round very quickly.

Loch Garten is famous for its breeding Osprey, as the first place they returned to in the 1950s, after a brief period of extinction in Britain. The four of us joined a crowd to enter a hide overlooking a huge Osprey nest and there it was – a wild, Scottish Osprey! Below the nest, though, we were hoping for something even more special.

The Capercaillie is a turkey sided grouse-like bird, which has a chequered history in Scotland and once again looks to be on the edge of extinction. Back in 2004, a regular ‘lek’ would gather in the early morning, under the Osprey hide. A lek is basically the dance floor of the bird world. The males strut their stuff, in the hope a female is either attracted or takes pity. This lek of a couple of males and a few females was my first ever Capercaillie! Very exciting to watch and the first of what I hoped would be several new birds!

We next moved onto Tulloch Moor where Black Grouse flying off the road became my second new bird of the day, quickly followed by another Scottish speciality, the Crested Tit, on some feeders by a nearby car park. Summer plumaged Slavonian Grebes on a flood over the road, were little bobby dazzlers with their golden tufts. It was all a bit surreal; three new birds by breakfast.

Next, we moved onto the stunning Findhorn Valley. An eleven-mile, dead-end road, that follows the river into some of the most breathtaking and remote scenery in Britain. Here Eagles dare but we had a time constraint which meant we didn’t get time to give the Golden and White-tailed Eagles a proper chance. Mountain Hare was new to me, and Red Grouse and Dipper were yet more quality upland birds we encountered.

The long drive to the west coast was next on the agenda, as we had a ferry to catch at Ullapool. Whilst waiting for the ferry to arrive, we found yet another new bird for me, an Iceland Gull! As the name suggests, they belong up in the Arctic north but small numbers winter in Britain and this bird was a little late heading north.

livened up with seabirds galore! Black Guillemot, Manx Shearwater and Puffins were a real delight to see but even better was all three regular species of diver –Great Norther, Black-throated and Redthroated – all in breeding splendour!

On arrival on Lewis, we drove straight to Griais, where the Duck had last been seen. We searched up and down the river, to no avail. Then suddenly, a brown duck came flying down the river, straight towards us. ‘That’s it!’ one of us shouted!

It landed nearby and allowed us close approach. Sadly, this was back before the days of me taking photos but I still have the memories of this momentous twitch and still remember the setting, the bird and the company I shared it with. But the day wasn’t done…

We had one last bird to see. The Hebrides were famous in the early 2000s for being a staging post for the rare, White-billed Diver. From a known cliff-top vantage point, we found a stunning adult and not so stunning first summer, ‘banana bill’. Another rare bird from the far north and my final new bird of the day, taking my total to six!

My best day’s birding, ever, ended camping on the Isle of Harris, overlooking the Sound of Taransay (where we could see the huts, Ben Fogle, et al lived in for the BBC’s Castaway in 2000, some four years previously…). The sun was still in the sky at 11pm, the sand was golden, the weather amazing and bird calls surrounded us. We sat outside our tent with a cold beer, soaking in the last of what had been a long but rather wonderful introduction into birding in Scotland and its islands!

The Priory Church has stood at the heart of the village of Deeping St James for hundreds of years - it is a constant in our landscape. Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

What are they?

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate

What is it?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
