Welcome
Not content with being a great place to live, the Deepings can boast its own fistful of world beaters as well! Martin Adams, 3x BDO World Champion and 3x World Masters Champion teamed up with Mugly, voted the World’s Ugliest Dog in 2012 at the Deepings Dog Show held on Jubilee Park in July. In the same month, the Deepings Triathlete, Kayleigh Adams finished her 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run in 1.17.02 to win Silver in the European Sprint Championships in Geneva just 2 seconds behind Camille Bauer of Switzerland. There were many achievers in the Deepings this summer including the Deeping to Brighton Cyclists who covered 170 miles in wind and rain and whose story we have been delighted to record. At home, we have attended a breathtaking selection of summer events, pictures of which we have included in this issue. For the creative, this Autumn there will be the opportunity to participate in the first I’d rather be in Deeping Pumpkin Carving Competition which will be held at Swines Meadow Farm Nursery and will raise funds for Zack’s Mission, part of Asthma UK. The fun has only just begun! 3

Knitted novelties from the Cheeky Chicks and friends have seen them raise an impressive £5,500 for their selected charities. A presentation evening was hosted by Lynn and Darren at the Walnut Tree where Barry Daff of the Notts & Lincs Air Ambulance, Helen Bembridge from Lives and John Thornthwaite from the Deeping Mens Group spoke about their respective charities and received their cheques. Monica and Ken Smith presented a cheque for £500 to the Isla del Rey in Menorca where the first British Military hospital on the island is being restored. Knitting has already begun for the Christmas project which aims to help three more charities in the coming year.

NEWS Crafting has been second nature to Donna McKean Smith since, as a six year old, she started to craft with fimo, her final piece in her Technology GCSE being a fimo bead necklace. She started her craft business 14 years ago, first with card making which has grown to the well stocked craft centre with a programme of workshops and children’s parties that the Deepings community has taken to it’s heart today. Now a guest presenter on the TV Show Create & Craft, Donna has bought her experience to the new and popular technique of Kumihimo, launching a Guide to the Craft ‘ Beads Braid - Twist’. Copies at £10 are available from Riverside Beads & Crafts, Craft Centre, Market Deeping.

That magnificent man and his threshing machine! John Hibbet was born in 1885 in Eastgate to Edward and Hannah, née Sewell. He moved to Willow Lodge, Frognall, when his mother died in childbirth, and this was where he was brought up by his Uncle Frank and Aunt Annie.
“men would down a pint of beer or ale at lunchtime with a bacon sandwich, brought by their wives”
John married Ethel Whitno in a service at St Peter’s in Wisbech in 1910, and they made their home in a red brick house at 26 Eastgate. The house had two rooms either side of the front door and a back kitchen, with three bedrooms above. There was a yard to the side and a good-sized garden leading down to the riverbank. Jack built a large zinc roofed lean-to shed at the side of the house for the storage of his threshing machine, a device that took the grain out of the ears of corn. So dusty was the process that men would down a pint of beer or ale at lunchtime with a bacon sandwich, brought by their wives. During the harvest, children had time off school to enable them to help, and they would work long days until it was dark.
When the Government requisitioned all agricultural land in 1914 and told farmers what to grow, Jack had been told to supply hay to keep horses fed. Always busy from June to October, Jack would take his threshing machine and tackle from farm to farm around an area of about 30 miles at harvest time. Hay was transported by horse and cart and it was his job to make sure that the hay got to the various railway stations in the area. continued >

“they also learnt how to deal with Zeppelins and how to recognise enemy aircraft” John had been a member of the Lincolnshire Yeomanry Territorial’s for some years, possibly before his marriage to Ethel. Nicknamed the Saturday Night Soldiers, the Territorials, mostly made up of farmers and farm workers, had regular training which was stepped up after the start of the war when the age limit was raised to 41. They were sent to Norfolk and Suffolk on Home Defence Training in case of German invasion and they also learnt how to deal with Zeppelins and how to recognise enemy aircraft. A large number of the Lincolnshire Yeomanry answered Lord Kitchener’s call to action in the war but John was unable to as he was busy supplying hay for the war effort. In 1915 he was given a medal to wear to let people know that he was on Army service. All men in reserved occupations wore these so that they would not be presented with a white feather, as was the custom if people thought they were cowards for not being in uniform. As the war raged and tanks were brought into service, the need for hay was not so urgent. After the war ended Jack carried on as a thresher, moving to 8 Bridge Street, where he owned 18 sets of tackle. Jack died on 22nd February 1947 at Bridge Street, Deeping St James, leaving a widow and two sons. His obituary recorded that he was a skilled machinist, a first-class shot and in demand for shooting parties. 12

Lucky life for one of Docherty’s Diamonds; Bert Murray Before Beckham was even a twinkle in his mother’s eye, another lad from east London had donned the number seven shirt and was making great strides for England and Chelsea. Bert Murray was born into a family of 9 from Shoreditch and made his way through the football schoolboy ranks. In 1958 his breakthrough moment came when he scored 2 goals for England Schoolboys against a Scottish side including Billy Bremner who they beat 3.1 in front of a crowd of 100,000 at Wembley. The side included Terry Venables and Alan, brother of ‘Chopper’ Harris. Jimmy Thompson, chief scout for Chelsea, responsible for taking Jimmy Greaves and Terry Venables to the Club, made
Bert an offer which was to see the lad play 170 games for the side.Trainer, Dickie Foss changed Bert’s postion from centre forward to right wing, “ one of the best things anyone has ever done for me” Bert recalls. For 2 years he played for the Juniors and then at 18 years old he was promoted to the first team having been a member of the FA Youth Club winning side. One of Docherty’s ‘diamonds’, the team was relegated to the 2nd division for one year, promoted in the next. Altogether he scored 44 goals for the Club including in games at Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Man U. between 1958 and ‘66. In that auspicious footballing year, Bert was to go to Birmingham for a happy 4 years. He then signed for 3 years at Brighton where his youngest child, Jamie was born at home in Saltdene. “Bobby Charlton, was the best player I ever played against” remembers Bert, “but I was also lucky enough to play against Dennis Law, Dave McKay, Georgie Best and Jimmy Greaves.” At the end of his footballing career, Bert was approached to play for Posh by Noel Cantwell and has fond memories of playing with Chris Turner, Freddie Hill, John Cousins, Tommy Robson, Jack Carmichael and Jim Hall for 3 years. Sponsorship and 6 figure paypackets were long into the future and £40 per week was considered by Bert to be a decent sum when playing for Docherty at Chelsea. “But we had to pay for all our clothes to look the part, keep a car and telephone, it all added up. Johnny Haines promoted brylcream on TV and things started to change with Georgie Best.” Left without a trade, Bert and wife, Eileen then took on the running of the Grenadiers nightclub in March but after just 6

months they were approached to take the Winning Post at Market Deeping. A second career spanning forty years unfolded for this couple, born in the sound of Bow bells and Bert has been at the White Horse and at the Bull, many of his customers following him and staff including Vonney and Maureen have worked for him for nearly 30 of those years. There are fond memories of his two shelties, Harvey and Ben, who would loyally follow him as he did chores in the Market Place and of all those bar games; pool, crib, darts, where he has partnered Wolfie, at which he has proved a tough opponent.. “A lucky life is how I would describe it “ reflects Bert “ Eileen has been a God send and I have a happy family. As a baby I survived meningitis when a Doctor prescribed drugs which he said would make me a cabbage or Sir Winston Churchill. You can judge the results for yourself! When playing for Birmingham my car turned over on the M1 and the roof caved in completely, I got out without a scratch.” With a game of golf to look forward to, a race on the TV and convivial company in the bar. A lucky life indeed. Meet Chelsea legend, Ron 'Chopper' Harris at Sportsman's Evening Dinner Deeping Sports & Social Club 17th Sept. Tickets £35 call 07990672216 15
CYCLING
Challenging! The word to describe the recent feat of Deepings Cyclists who rode to Brighton for a variety of charities. Leaving the Spin Room Studio early on 24th July, the cyclists faced torrential rain and horrific conditions for the first 110 miles of their journey. Making it safe and sound to the Premier Inn Hotel at Tower Bridge, they had a much welcome organised lunch which helped them warm up but they still had to get back on their bikes and carry on through London in the relentless rain. Bad though they were, the conditions made this days ride very memorable. The whole team were back within ten hours for a hot shower and a meal of which every mouthful was savoured! The final days riding started at 8am. The sun was shining as all 54 riders set off through the busy streets of London and headed towards Brighton. The ride was only 64 miles but these took just as long as the 110 the day before as they were a little hilly!! Hills and sunshine create very different exhausting ride conditions and they found it tough riding on a very undulating course to the lunch stop only 9 miles from Brighton Pier. Lunch was amazing; fresh bread, cheeses, soup, fajitas, salad, pate, flap jacks and cake.. brilliant.. After lunch there was a short 4 mile ride to the final climb before the 6 miles downhill ride into Brighton!! The final climb was none other than Ditchling Beacon! A 1.5 mile hill climb with an average gradient of 8%... Some parts as steep as 12%.... Very tough but very enjoyable.. And what a sense of achievement when the top was finally reached! There was blood, sweat and tears... Emotional... Down into Brighton through bustling streets avoiding the traffic.. The journey was nearly over.. down the final slope and there was the pier!!! Omg they had done it and the families were there cheering and clapping, screaming and shouting as the riders approached the final few metres...What a few days it had been... More tears... And then more tears... Says organiser Claire Cross, “I can honestly say that everyone involved in this trip was amazing and through the wind, rain, hills and all those miles I feel very privileged to have seen every one reach their goals and be part of the active4ever dream.

CLASSIC FIREPLACES
A classic family dynasty at the hearth of Deeping It was always Terry’s dream to have a business of his own. A carpenter by trade, he was one of six children from a Lincolnshire farming family. Determined to make good, he spent his early years as a builder eventually working at Parker Fireplaces of Holbeach, joined by his two sons, Simon and Tim on leaving The Deepings school, In 1986 the dream was realised when Terry, Simon and Tim worked at night to build their own business, manufacturing and fitting fireplaces from a small unit on Northfields Industrial Estate, where the business owns much larger units today. Wife Ann supported from the outset and later joined by daughter, Emma. Now Office Manager, Emma explains ‘We have been working in the Deepings for a generation, customers that we had initially return to us as they move house or decide to change the style of their home to purchase a new fireplace because of the high quality products and excellent service we provide. We have been in the fortunate position that the clientele we have locally have responded well to the bespoke
18
service that we offer. Customers often visit our showrooms with tape measures in hand and are pleasantly surprised to find its unnecessary because we can make any of the fireplaces any size, in any material, to suit a large range of gas fires, electric fires or stoves. Classic offer a unique service, in that their range of fireplaces in marble, stone and wood are manufactured on the premises. From the initial visit to the showroom, to the design and turbocad drawing of how the final installation will appear, the company are with their customers all the way. They remove the existing fireplace and offer an after-sales service as well. With seven staff in total, Tim is head of sales and Simon in charge of manufacturing and installation. The company are also proud to supply Chesney’s of London, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of luxury fireplaces and are often called upon to work for interior designers in the capital and closer to home for Hunters Interiors of Stamford. They have worked for the McCorquodale’s at Great Ponton and at the Exton Park Estate in Rutland for Lady Campden and are the supplier of choice for Alston Country Homes. Delighted to be asked to feature in ITV’s ‘60 Minute Makeover’ they were pleased with the smooth and quick installation of their fire and surround but were less impressed with other parts of the transformation which were less than complete after an hour!
“We have been working in the Deepings for a generation” ‘Unfortunately we do hear horror stories regarding dangerous installations but we have a programme of rigorous HETAS & Gas safe training and keep abreast of all regulations and updates’ explains Emma, ‘we are particularly pleased to have recently passed the ‘Buy with confidence’ scheme introduced by Trading Standards which has exacting criteria. It is important to us to be able to offer our clients the best advice on flue systems and stoves, still very popular and high efficiency gas fires, which help our customers save money today.’ With Simon, Tim & Emma now at the helm & young grandsons already showing a keen interest in this family business, Terry and Ann can look forward to their retirement with their family business in capable hands.

Deepings Lakes Right on our doorstep is the beautiful Deepings Lakes nature reserve. It’s such a big space you often feel you have the whole place to yourself. Take a container or plastic bag and enjoy picking some of the wild brambles that seem to be growing all over the place at this time of the year.
Hamerton Zoo Take your own little monkeys to meet the REAL monkeys at Hamerton Zoo Park in Sawtry. As well as monkeys, see cheetahs, tigers, wallabies, wolves, camels, sloths, anteaters, zebras and a lot more. There’s also a bird aviary, reptile house and farm animals. Bring your own picnic to eat in the ground (there’s a covered picnic area too), or eat in the café. See www.hamertonzoopark. com/ for opening times and prices.

WHAT’S ON KIDS
Sacrewell Sacrewell is always a firm favourite with families, no matter what time of the year. The Mill House reopened in July after a £1.8 million restoration and conservation project part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and it is great to see this now that it is finished. There’s always plenty going on at Sacrewell, with special events often in the weekends. See www.sacrewell.org.uk for more.
Belton House If you haven’t been up to Belton House yet to see the new playground, now is a perfect time to head over. The £1.4 million renovated playground opened in April and has been extremely popular with local families over the summer. And away from the playground, there are the grounds to explore as well as the indoor Ride Café. See more at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/beltonhouse.
Fineshade Woods
Woolsthorpe Manor Another National Trust property, Woolsthorpe is just up the A1 near Colsterworth. There is a fantastic Science Centre in a converted barn with lots of hands-on experiments for the kids to play with. Look out for Apple Day on 11 October with craft stalls, children’s apple crafts and activities with an orchard flavour. More information at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/woolsthorpe-manor. 26
In recent years the Forestry Commission has really been thinking about families. After the successful Gruffalo trails and activities last year, this year many Forestry Commission woods (including Fineshade) have been turned over to Superworm - Superworm is superlong. Superworm is super-strong. Watch him wiggle! See him squirm! The Superworm trail at Fineshade Woods runs until 31 October.

MUSHROOM KETCHUP
The elixir of youth? Local delicacy Mushroom Ketchup makes Deeping man’s fortune. The rags to riches story of Joseph Cunnington, one of seven children of John and Mary Cunnington, born in 1828 in West Deeping, is inextricably tied up with the local delicacy of mushroom ketchup. When Joseph’s father, an agricultural labourer, died in 1842, the family was left destitute. Joseph and his younger brother became pig labourers to provide for their mother, as recorded in the 1851 Census. Not long afterwards Joseph made a good marriage to Ann Mansfield of Bourne and the couple moved to Deeping St James where he became a market gardener in Eastgate (now number 91). The couple had three children. Joseph began to make mushroom ketchup in a distillery on his premises. Soon the locals developed a taste for the delicacy and took their bottles to be filled, while Joseph began an enterprise of bottling the ketchup and shipping it by rail or horse and cart to nearby villages. He paid local children a few pennies to gather the crop of mushrooms on his land. Joseph’s wife Ann died in 1861, and sadly his second wife, Martha Varney, died in childbirth in 1863 and was buried with her son Henry in Deeping St James cemetery. His third wife, Elizabeth Crane, who he married in 1864, bore him three more children. The popularity of his mushroom ketchup among the people of Deeping increased and soon Joseph found himself a farmer of 100 acres, employing five men and two boys. Joseph’s mushroom ketchup became the Worcester Sauce of its day. People loved its tasty flavour of mushrooms and it went down a treat with a fried breakfast – men coming back from a hard day’s work on the fields would have lashings of it on their dinner. By 1881 Joseph’s farm had extended to 600 acres, mostly in Stowgate, and he now employed 17 men and six boys. After the death of his wife in 1885, Joseph remained on his own for ten years but then in 1895, aged 67, he married Hannah Cox in Peterborough; his son Frederick was born when Joseph had reached the grand old age of 69! When Joseph himself died in 1903 the mushroom ketchup business came to an end. His obituary reported that he had been in failing health for some time and that in the past his distillery business had been run on a large scale. Mushroom Ketchup based on the 1860 recipe now available from Deeping Fudge at Swines Meadow Farm Nursery at £2.99 a bottle also served at the Goat at Frognall.
1860 Recipe Take a bushel of large flaps of mushrooms gathered dry and bruise them with your hands. Put some at the bottom of an earthen pan, strew some salt over them, then another layer of mushrooms and salt til you have done. Put in half an ounce of beaten cloves and mace, the same of all spice and let them stand five or six days. Stir them up every day and tie a paper over them and bake for 4 hours in a slow oven. When done strain through a cloth to get all the liquor out and let the liquor stand to settle. Pour it clear from the settings; to every gallon of liquid add a quart of red wine and if not salt enough a little salt and a race of ginger cut small, half an ounce of cloves and mace. Boil it til about a third is reduced, then strain it through a sieve into a pan. The next day pour it from the settings and bottle it for use. But mind to cork it tight.

LILLIAN LENTON
“The images on the chairs represent issues concerning law and human rights; one of them is dedicated to the Suffragettes”
Deepings’ own Suffragette
commemorated at Runnymede There is a special reason why the bronze chairs that form the public artwork at Runnymede, designed by Hew Locke as part of the 800 year celebrations of the signing of the Magna Carta, have a resonance with the people of the Deepings. The twelve chairs signify the number of jurors at a trial as a representation of Clause 39 of the Magna Carta which lays down the right to trial by jury. The images on the chairs represent issues concerning law and human rights; one of them is dedicated to the Suffragettes and, particularly, to Lillian Lenton. Lillian, born in 1892, was the granddaughter of an old Deeping family, the Lentons, and she spent many happy holidays here, her father Isaac having left for Leicester in 1882 where he became a carpenter. It was during one of those holidays, in 1901, that while playing with her cousins, John and Joseph, two haystacks belonging to Samuel Frisby of Bank House, Eastgate, were set on fire. The boys denied
involvement but nobody believed them when they insisted that it was Lillian who was to blame. After leaving school, Lillian realised her ambition to train as a dancer but having heard Emmeline Pankhurst speak she was inspired to join the Suffragettes. Almost immediately she was involved in a serious window breaking episode and was one of 200 arrested and sent to Holloway Prison for two months. Unrepentant, on release she became involved in a sustained arson campaign with Olive Wharry, famously setting alight the tea pavilion in Kew Gardens in 1913. Remanded in custody, Lillian went on hunger strike and was force fed. She became seriously ill when food entered her lungs and she contracted double pneumonia and pleurisy. She was released under the Government’s Cat & Mouse Act which allowed prisoners to be released if they refused food and became ill but were to be re-arrested when they recovered.
Home Office Records, National Archives
Lillian escaped but was rearrested in Doncaster and charged with setting light to Blaby Railway Station. She then escaped continued >

to France but was rearrested and the pattern repeated. On the outbreak of World War I and the cessation of the suffrage campaign, Lillian joined Elsie Inglis and the Scottish Women’s Hospital Committee and went to support Serbian soldiers fighting in Russia. For her work in Serbia, Lillian was awarded the French Red Cross Medal. Words: Judy Stevens Research: Mary Pendred, Elizabeth Parkinson, Joy Baxter, Elaine White Pictures: Ian Baxter
Two years before her death in 1972, as Treasurer of the Suffragette Fellowship, she unveiled a memorial in Christchurch Gardens, Westminster, dedicated to all women who fought for the vote. Lillian’s indomitable nature showed through in a BBC1 documentary in 1968: ‘I was extremely pleased when we got the vote, but disgusted at the curious terms … men got the vote at 21, women at 30 and then only if they were householders. Personally I didn’t vote for a long time because I hadn’t either a husband or furniture, although I was over 30.’
Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, Lillian visited the country with fellow Suffragette, Nina Boyle. Later she worked for the British Embassy in Stockholm and became a speaker for Save the Children. She was Secretary for the National Union of Women Teachers until 1953.

Golf Courses
Rutland Water The Normanton Championship Course with its breathtaking views over Rutland Water has to be one of the countries finest new golf courses, a yardage of 6846 and challenging undulating greens it is a good test of skill for the lowest handicapper. Always a fun place to play with, unsurprisingly, plenty of water hazards; a golfing buddy said if you just look out over the lake with boats bobbing up and down you could easily be in an exclusive south coast resort. He’s right of course. The food and clubhouse are both top notch. Look out for deals on www.rutlandwatergolfcourse.co.uk
Toft House Hotel & Golf Club Opened in 1988, the course exploit’s the natural features of the land and slopes of the southern boundary of the Lincolnshire escarpment to provide a stern test of golf. Classically designed, it has four par threes and three par fives over 6,368 yards. Challenging but pleasurable with good tests for the biggest hitters the course can also be managed by the short hitters who come with a plan. Be prepared for uneven stances but very fair greens. Food and drink is first class at the country house hotel on site.www.tofthotelgolf.co.uk 36
Greetham Valley The Valley Course is a 5595 yard picturesque course with some very testing holes. In particular the 17th being a par four with a wooded area to the left, a brook on the right and a lake next to the green!!. Worth a visit without doubt. The Lakes Course is a stunning 6769 yard course with long wide fairways that favour the big hitter. The par 3s are very challenging with lovely but deceptive water features. The signature holes are the 3rd, 10th and 18th which is right in front of the clubhouse. This 18th I found easier than Burghley simply by not flirting with the water!. A cracking course with good food and some great winter deals to include breakfast and lunch. www.greethamvalley.co.uk/

Burghley Park The indigenous tree species provide a particular golfing challenge even on the shorter holes, where accuracy is all important. The greens are always quick and true, and have a reputation for being some of the best in the area. Burghley reminds me of a 1920’s style golf course, elongated to adapt to today’s technology. There are some tough holes, no more so than the tricky 18th with its sloping green. The clubhouse and food are absolutely outstanding. Great fun to play. www. burghleyparkgolfclub.co.uk

Gedney Golf Club Affordable and enjoyable golf is offered at Gedney Hill. This is an 18 hole par 70 flat parkland course measuring 5287 yards. There are very challenging holes, small undulating greens and with fen winds blowing, Gedney is far more difficult than golfers imagine. There are cunningly located hazards and fair but difficult greens with pros rarely breaking par. At £10 a round on weekdays (avoid Wednesdays if possible) it’s an absolute bargain and is the friendliest of clubs. www.gedneyhillgolfclub.co.uk Compiled by local golfer, Paul Hanson

Where shall we explore this weekend? With its medieval street plan, interesting shops, galleries, museum and an array of teashops, pubs and of course, the Talbot Inn, this ancient market town of Oundle, is a great place for a mooch and only just over 30 minutes drive away.. Built of limestone many properties have Collyweston roofs and a resemblance to those that can be seen in Market Deeping. It is said that the oak staircase of the Talbot is from the nearby Fotheringhay Castle, now in ruins, execution place of Mary Queen of Scots but said to harbour her spirit.
