For one week in August 5,600 young people from all over the UK and overseas came together for the 11th International Scout & Guide Camp hosted by Lincolnshire Scouts & Guides and staged on the Lincolnshire Showground. As you would expect there was a huge contingent from this county and the numbers were swelled by junior sections who were invited to spend the day experiencing the camp. Dozens of creative, adventurous and inventive activities both on and off site, took place, and the Deeping-based Scout Active Support Unit organised a BakeOff, carting and water-based activities. And just as elsewhere in the country, there was a magnificent closing ceremony. Read more about the prowess of Deeping athletes in this issue and the International Scouting Jamboree that is due to take place in Seoul next year, and the two young people from Deeping who will represent us there!

DYG with help from the West Deeping Heritage Group visited a site where gravel extraction and archaeological investigation has been going on for twenty years. Maps of the landscape showed the outline of settlements and the young people were fascinated to stand around the markings showing a Roman villa. Amazing artefacts were on display including coins and pottery and a complete copper alloy spearhead from the middle Bronze Age. Gary Bannister, from Breedons and archaeologists Simon Meadows and Debby Bailey were on hand to share their expertise. Chairman of Deeping United, Lee Sutton revealed the winner of the July competition was Natalie Lumb who correctly identified the singer of ‘Tea for Two’ in the film of the same name as Doris Day. Natalie will enjoy a cream tea for two at award winning tea room and cakery, Lilli’s. The Deepings School’s Year 13 Prom this year took place at the Black Horse, Baston and was expertly organised by Mia Goldsmith and Charlotte Wrath. During the heatwave a very serious field fire was averted by the quick thinking of a Deepings Youth Group member, Ben Sanford. Ben explains, “I was on my way to Youth Group when I looked over towards the fields by Linchfield Road and noticed a small fire. I have never dialled 999 before but as this was important I used my initiative and called and asked for a fire engine. I told them it was only small but it was in a field and they should send a fire engine as soon as possible.”

18 The Waterton Arms - the heartbeat of Deeping St James The Mulligans

Arriving from Kent, where he had been a gardener and in charge of unloading Thames barges at Erith, Arthur and his wife Mary Seabrook took the pub by storm when they arrived in 1932. They were to stay for over 25 years, hosting a wedding reception for their second daughter, Dorothy when she married George Thorington from Plumstead at the Priory Church in 1933. In December of that year patrons were pleased to hear that the kerbing of that dangerous corner near the pub was receiving attention and the danger of being knocked down was reduced, especially when on their way home if they were not too steady or careful.

There are records of dances being arranged and in February 1911; Joseph Mulligan had assembled a nice company, the room was neatly decorated and Joseph was assisted by Mr Neal as MC. Mr Kay presided at the piano,

landlords were John Wray and his wife until his death aged 50 in 1818. Carpenter William Kelham (b.1781) and wife Ann then took over, moving to Paradise Lane, Northborough by 1841. Charles Wyche (b.1788), farmer and landowner from Postland near Crowland, was the first recorded owner of The Wheatsheaf. Edmund Waterton of the Manor House, Deeping St James, was known for his love of a bit of razzamatazz and when he purchased The Wheatsheaf from Charles Wyche in 1885 he not only changed the name and installed George Tipping as the licensee, he also introduced the Waterton Park Sports Day which included all types of horse and pony races, athletic sports, bicycle and tricycle races. It seemed that Edmund merely continued the tradition of the Waterton being something of a pleasure palace for locals. Alfred and Caroline Castor Elliott were the most eccentric in that regard. They came to the pub in 1884, Alfred having been a tobacconist and taxidermist in Stamford. He was very interested in ancient objects as this article in the Peterborough Advertiser suggests: ‘An extraordinary relic of a bygone age is being exhibited in the museum room by Mr Elliott, antiquarian. Amongst the large number of objects of local general interest is part of a gibbet iron on which the body of Weldon was hung after being executed on Hambleton Heath for the murder and robbery of Mr Freeman of Edith Weston, the booty being only four shillings and sixpence. Weldon was arrested in a dancing room at Helpston.’

William Hardy at the violin, and much jollity ensued! A Quoits Club was also set up with as many as 80 members attending in the new club room. The Mulligan brothers were all really good at the game and when in 1911 none of them could play, the team unusually lost to rivals Thorney. Mary Mulligan was very successful as an inn-keeper, her son Lawrence lived with her and she employed Elizabeth Crich from Boston as an assistant. There were auctions and sports competitions and committee meetings for various organisations – all thirsty work. In January 1919 Mary was able to purchase, at auction at the Bell, three freehold cottages with yards and gardens known as Loretto Cottages, and the adjoining land near the Roman Catholic Church, for £320. In August 1923 Mary herself was up before the Beak for allowing gambling by bagatelle and table skittles and was fined £10 and costs, even though she claimed she was just raising money for the Quoits Club. In 1926 Mary called time for the last time. When John Stubley and his wife Maud from Bourne arrived, the corrugated club house on the lawn was pressed into action as a venue for sports and fetes. John’s horsedrawn brake brought parties from Peterborough to the pub and in 1927 he was granted a licence to sell at the sports in aid of the local effort for Peterborough Memorial Hospital. Eventually John moved to the Half Moon in Stamford and for a brief period Charles Simpson took over, introducing a horse shoe game on the bar.

Fun and games continued when the Mulligan era at the Waterton began in 1911 when widow Mary Mulligan took the reins, having moved from running a general stores in Granville Street, Peterborough (issue 054).

When Church Street, Deeping St James, was Town Street and there were fields as far as the eye could see, The Waterton Arms was known as The Wheatsheaf and then as now it was the hub of village life in the elbow of the TheWelland.firstrecorded

20 During Mary and Arthur’s time more entertainment was provided, bowling greens reinstalled, the corrugated club house was given a coat of green paint and afterwards known as ‘the green hut’, popular for whist drives, dances and concerts. The bowls team flourished and although they suffered a resounding defeat in July 1935, they often triumphed over the Plough Inn, Deeping St Nicholas. In 1939 at the age of 59 Arthur was a nurseryman an as well as a publican. Also living at the pub was son Arthur, a general labourer, daughter Marjorie a head stock-keeper in a department store, and Winifred, a cinema attendant. The green hut was pressed into more worthy action during the War when the local branch of the WRVS held regular meetings and members would knit scarves, gloves, mittens and balaclavas for the armed forces. This was interrupted for tap and ballet classes held on a Saturday.

From 1946 the right-hand corner of the green hut was occupied by Ludwik Majciehowski with wife Maisie (née Orton) son Brian and daughter Janet. In 1949 Maisie’s father bought 19 Bridge Street and the family rented it–- adding a further daughter, Patricia, to the family in 1950. In 1955 they eventually qualified for a council house and moved into 73 Godsey Crescent. It was the first time they had had hot and cold running water, an inside WC, a bath and even a radiator in the dining room. Similarly Maisie’s older brother Reginald and his wife Freda shared the green hut until they were allocated a council house in Park Crescent. In 1956 the licensees again changed and Eric and Anne Hancock moved in with the aim to make the pub popular for wedding receptions. In September 1957 they catered for the wedding of Josephine Clare to Richard Harris, both of whom were in the Priory Players. Josephine worked for Marks & Spencer’s and Richard was a corporal in the RAF Police stationed at Langtoft. They made their home in Church St., Deeping St James. Ted and Agnes Prescott took over the Pub in 1964. They entered the competition for the best inn sign where no pictorial sign existed; the organisers, the Lincolnshire Assoc of the Visual and Heritage Arts Panel being concerned about the disappearance of individual pub signs. Sadly the Waterton did not win but the Prescotts’ appetite for competition was undeterred and in 1972 they held an indoor sports competition. Mrs Fields, wife of Jack, a retired Thurlby publican, presented trophies to the winners in the Bourne LVA darts (John Cornwall), billiards (Ron Gilbert) and cribbage (Nigel Sainsbury) leagues. Landlord Ted also received trophies for winning the Watney Mann Midlands Darts League singles. The skippers of the teams were presented with cufflinks and ladies who had assisted throughout the season, Winnie Hare, Lilli Swiffen and Bridget Childs, were given gold compacts. In the same year Ted held a bonfire party for over 100 children and their parents, customers providing jacket potatoes. In December that year a Christmas party for 59 older residents was held, where they enjoyed a buffet supplied by the customers. After tea they were entertained by Len Lake on the organ, Jim on the drums and then carol singing and old favourite tunes were led by the Priory Players. Fifty-three prizes had been given for the tombola and each guest received a parcel of Christmas goodies. The Christmas cake was cut by the oldest person present, Mr Curtis (84). But by June 1978 the Prescotts had moved on and Ron and Beryl Webb moved in. The pub was extended by incorporating a pair of adjoining cottages; the old bar was extended to become the lounge and the former lounge became the bar. Bar food was offered at lunchtime but in the evening the lounge was saved for quiet conversation with no piped music. The juke box and gaming machines were found in the bar.

of musical events, some associated with the annual Beer Festival and others with the Raft Race – the pub used as storage for the increasing number of rafts. Charity afternoon teas, a popular bake off, regular quiz nights and carols at Christmas – truly the heartbeat of the village.

The auction for Waterton Hall and the pub, by then known as the Waterton Arms, took place in May 1891 at The Bell. The mansion was described as ‘most pleasantly situated near the banks of the river Welland containing all the accommodation essential to a moderate establishment surrounded by lawns and pleasure grounds, overlooking a well timbered parkland with stables and carriage houses.’ The Waterton Arms had ‘outbuildings and paddock, farm houses, buildings, numerous enclosures of accommodation land, gardens and cottages’. At this time the licensee was ex-Royal Artillery gunner, Edward Dexter and his wife Harriett, née Tyers, from Stamford. He combined his new career with being an agricultural labourer, having three children to support, son Edward having been baptised in Deeping St James in 1891. He was followed into the role by Maria Healey who took up the position in 1898 after her husband Harry had died the previous December at just 40 years of age. He had worked his way up at Waterton Hall, starting as a groom and becoming a butler and steward. The couple had four children all born at Waterton Hall; Austin, Margaret, Henry and Monica. In 1891 Maria had been joined by her sister Eliza and brother-in-law Frederick, a colour sergeant in the 5th Middlesex Regiment stationed at Great Yarmouth. Phoebe and D.S. James were employed as general servants. But by 1911 they had left the area for Romford and the Mulligan era at the Waterton had begun.

William Morgan Gee had taken over from his father William Gee as the licensee of the India Queen (just down from the Bell) but sadly had not been able to make a go of the pub and was made bankrupt in 1866 after just five years. In 1872 he became the licensee at The Wheatsheaf, taking over from Joseph and Martha Sewell who had been at the pub for a decade. William had also run The Plough at Deeping St Nicholas. In 1874 he left Deeping with his wife Mary (née Atkin) to set up his own saddlery business in Hackney, following the family trade.

When the pub was mentioned in Brett Collier’s ‘Pub Walks in Lincolnshire’ in 1994 it was Billie Stevens and Barry Cassidy behind the bar. In 1995 the new landlords were Gary and Nicola Randall, who also ran the White Horse at Market Deeping, and then in October 1999 Colin Chapman and his wife Jenny were the landlords, who made an application for the premises to be suitable for the solemnisation of marriage. Geoff Brown and his family then took over at the helm at the beginning of the new century with Kevin and Sue Laughton and business partner Steve Reynolds taking over in 2010. John and Maria Smith came from the Queen’s Head at Helpston and enjoyed a successful period at the Wheatsheaf in 1881 recording a farm of 16 acres in Horsegate in their own name, employing a man and a boy.

Looking back over the landlords at this prestigious site it seems that they changed pubs frequently – John and Mary Bains, having come from Cold Hanworth, had five children, John combining his role as a publican with being a carrier. At the Wheatsheaf in 1851, by 1861 they moved further along Town Street to number 84 to take The Railway Tavern. William Charity and his wife Elizabeth were at the Prince of Wales, Market Deeping (issue 21) before coming to the Wheatsheaf in 1855. It was here that he had a serious accident in the brew house, slipping on a plank near the copper and scalding both his legs to knee height. Undeterred he remained at the Wheatsheaf until just after the 1861 census when he moved next door.

‘There are 27 in fromaandLincolnshirethroughoutgrouptheirspreadpairedwithgroupoftenGibraltar’

There are 27 in their group spread throughout Lincolnshire and paired with a group of ten from Gibraltar. There have been many online meet ups, they have a group chat and will be taking part in multiple training camps, one of which the Scouts from Gibraltar aim to attend. Details of what to expect at the Jamboree are slowly emerging. The pair are keen to unleash their culinary skills when they participate in the food corridor, when each country showcases the dishes from home. Lincolnshire sausages and tea are lined up to be part of the offer from this neck of the woods. There will be opening and closing ceremonies where flags from every country represented will be paraded. Uniforms include baseball jerseys with the same numbers as they were allocated as part of the selection process and their Lincolnshire neckers will be currency when the great swap takes place!

When asked what it was about their performance that so impressed the selection panel, Annie is quick to say that befriending six other scouts and performing a lively dance in the campfire talent show probably clinched her selection early on. All of those Saturday mornings with the Deepings School of Dance since the age of three have served her well! Hugh, meanwhile, formed a boy band ‘The Six Directions’ performing a never to be forgotten rendition of ‘Party in the USA’ with a passing nod to Miley Cyrus.

Both Hugh and Annie are keen sportspeople, Annie’s Glinton football team has just signed up for Deeping United while Hugh is a cyclist, hockey and rugby player. With enormous cultural diversity on offer, and a vast range of new experiences to try in Korea, Annie and Hugh are ready for anything!

Beavers at the age of six and in scouting ever since, Annie and Hugh have been preparing for such an experience as the World Scout Jamboree for all of their young lives. Inspired by older Scouts coming to talk to them about their experiences in far flung lands, the pair jumped at the opportunity to try for selection for the Jamboree, to be held in South Korea in 2023. As they planned their trip to Poacher – Lincolnshire’s International Scout and Guide Jamboree held in August – the prospect of joining over 6,000 scouts and guides did not phase them one bit. They positively bubbled over with enthusiasm, not least because when they attended the selection camp for the World Scout Jamboree back in February, they passed the test with flying Forcolours.twelve days in August next year the pair will be in Saemangenum – at 1.5 kilometres by 8.5 kilometres, an area larger than Gibraltar – with 45,000 other Scouts. Followed by five days in the Capital, Seoul, this promises to be an expedition of a lifetime by anyone’s standards. The UK is sending the largest contingent with 90 units, including 27 individuals from Lincolnshire.

The world is our oyster

Food was a challenge in the bitter February wind; the fire they made never seemed to get hot enough for them to cook chicken to a high enough temperature for them to safely eat it. They survived on a diet of salad in wraps. In order that the process was as fair as possible the candidates were known by their number rather than their name, an entirely new experience for the pair but one which did not put them off, ‘If we hadn’t been selected, we would still have really enjoyed the experience!’ Now all that was left to do was to raise £4,000 each which funds their flights, camp, food and all the equipment needed for what has been described as a ‘Scouting Olympics’. No slouches these two, they embarked on this task with all their usual energy and enthusiasm. They held a ‘lucky square’ draw for the Jubilee which yielded £200, held a coffee morning at the Priory Church Hall with a tombola which raised £625 and were much encouraged by the outpouring of support from their friends and families. Both are working at part-time jobs as well as, in Hugh’s case, studying for his GCSEs and Annie preparing for hers next year. With a family bingo night planned and a quiz night after Christmas, excitement is definitely growing.

We have seen and read with great joy of the achievements of gymnast Jake Jarman at the recent Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. In these, his first major senior championships, Jake won the gold medal in the team allaround, individual all-around, floor exercise and vault. But not everyone is aware that this gold medallist attended the Deepings School from the age of eleven, leaving at the age of seventeen having embarked on his gymnastic career. Jake’s teachers were supportive of his strict training regime, which inevitably meant that he had to be removed from school, and they kept him abreast of the lessons he was missing while reducing his workload by dropping certain subjects.

Meanwhile in Montreal, Canada local Deeping resident and triathlete, Simon Hoppe competed in the World Triathlon Championships in June –where he finished 8th in his age group (50-54) and won a bronze medal in his age group in the inaugural Mixed Team Relay event at the World Championships –here is a photo of the happy medal-winning team at the finish line, which Simon led out on the first leg, and was a very proud member of literally Team GB’s first ever age group medallists in the Mixed Team Relay event. This is Simon’s second medal at the Triathlon World Championships and fourth top10 finish in 18 World Championship appearances, spanning 31 years. Simon also won a medal, as the fastest in his age group, at the recent National Championships at Mallory Park in July and he is heading out to the European Championships in Munich in August, where he hopes to add to his collection of five medals in nine appearances.

28 SPORT

Jake’s dedication to his sport has been unquestionable, training six days a week from 11.00am until 8.00pm with a break for lunch and a short break late afternoon. Prior to the British Championships earlier this year, he dislocated his finger and had to adjust his training regimes to work around the injury. In spite of this impediment he finished third overall, taking the floor and the vault gold medals. He then competed in the London Open where he took overall gold along with individual titles. These results, plus routines at the National Sports Centre, earned Jake selection for Commonwealth Games, and as his proud Dad Tony says, ‘The rest is fantastic history!’

Whenwww.sgsoc.orgthefloats of the world-famous Spalding Flower Parade were packed away ten years ago it was thought that escalating costs, the decline of the tulip industry and lack of council funding would ensure that they would never be seen rolling through the streets again. Local man Stephen Timewell has changed that view and undertaken the mammoth task of resurrecting the parade. Already £14,000 has been raised via a Justgiving campaign and many people are lining up to volunteer – the parade is set once again to delight the crowds and as Stephen says: ‘This will be a breath of fresh air. It will help local businesses and give people something to look forward to.’ Save the date: Saturday 6th May 2023.

Spalding boasts the oldest provincial society in Britain and an historic collection second oldest to Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum. Spalding Gentlemen’s Society was founded in 1710 by Maurice Johnson, of Ayscoughfee Hall. A barrister in London, he engaged in Enlightenment ‘Coffee House’ society, meeting now famous historical figures, and replicated this in Spalding. Members of the Society included Newton, Tennyson and Alexander Pope. Despite the historic name, SGS is a registered charity and accredited museum (not a Gentlemen’s Club!) relying totally on male and female members and other volunteers/organisations for its important work. With some 20,000 books/15000 archive documents and a collection spanning thousands of years of history, visitors never cease to be amazed. Open on Wednesdays 11am-1pm and the third Sunday each month from 2-4pm, entry is free and all are welcome. SGS also has a fascinating programme of Winter Lectures starting in September – see

A treasure house in the heart of Spalding, this Grade 1 listed building was a family home between 1450 and 1902 when it was bought for the people of Spalding to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Layers of history can be identified as the house was adapted according to the trends of the day. In more recent years it has housed Belgian refugees, been a library, a school and is now a museum. It stands in five acres of gardens laid out by William Sands in the early 18th century and is home to a Grade 1 listed War Memorial designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. There is also a family- run eatery serving locally sourced food – open 7 days a week 9.30am-5.00pm. The Hall is open Tues, Sat and Sun 10.00 am - 2.00pm More information www.sholland.gov.uk/ayscoughfeecontinued>

Every day until the 30th October Baytree Owl & Wildlife Centre hold their popular flying demonstrations - rapt audiences watch up to 5 birds flying with exciting and engaging commentary from the falconry team. Entry to these displays is included with the admission fee. There are a few surprises in the cast of 80 owls and birds of prey waiting to be discovered including Doodles the raven of Peaky Blinders fame! This attraction is set alongside Baytree Garden Centre in Weston which offers a restaurant, farm shop and other amenities. Open Tues- Sun 10.00 am - 4.00pm (closed Mondays in term time). The comfortable and spacious Coffee House serves a wide menu of: homemade hot & cold food, all day breakfasts, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free. Light snacks and plenty of cakes! asked what her favourite item was, she was quick to recall a painting she found in a downstairs toilet of one home which was ‘a beautiful French oil on canvas, which captured the blue and yellow tones of the Mediterranean summer’ which flew above estimate on auction day. Jessica explains that part of the joy in what she does is not just the value of the items she finds, it is the history and the connection to the owners, often sentimental, that brings an artefact to life, or the life it finds once sold to someone else. It will become obvious to all that watch, that Chris Kamara, A.K.A. Kammy – the man, the myth, the legend – and Jessica have a special bond which brings an element of light-hearted fun with the contributors that makes the show one to watch! Claire Collinson-Jones, Executive Producer said, ‘There’s been warmth, heart and humour in Jessica’s shows.’

Travelling across the country, from Cornwall to Barrow in Furness, Frinton on Sea to Leeds, Jessica has enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people in their homes, each with important stories to tell and exciting treasures to be uncovered. When

CASH IN THE ATTIC

Auctioneer Jessica Wall’s new role as expert on Cash in the Attic

39

The new revival series of Cash in the Attic on Channel 5 began on 1st August, and Stamford Auction Rooms’ founder, auctioneer and valuer, Jessica Wall, has been recruited to be an expert on the show, featuring in a whopping nine episodes, and a tenth which features Stamford Auction Rooms premises itself as well as Jessica on the rostrum! Jessica had been approached to join other antique related shows in previous years which she turned down, but this time she said yes, and explains that ‘Cash in the Attic is a show that is true to what I do every day; going into people’s houses to find items to sell to make them money, valuing and cataloguing those items, and then selling them at auction; it is the natural order of things. Therefore Cash in the Attic seemed like a perfect fit for me and I could not wait to get involved!’

It is exciting, joyful and amazing. Rather like you feel as a young adult. In the prime of your life, energetic and with very few worries.

Imagine, if you will, a hot summer fire. A bonfire at the centre of a festival or party. There’s music playing and lots of fun going on. Laughter and song are in the air.

Autumn

Conversely, energy. if your spleen is strong, energy flows to you –and this includes money. Try boosting your spleen by massaging along the inside of your shin bone from the ankle to the knee. This will hit several points on the spleen meridian.

Do it for about two minutes on each leg for a couple of weeks. You probably won’t win the lottery but something will change if you do it. The Earth that we live upon is incredibly generous and you will be allowing more of that generosity to flow through your being. If you do win the Lottery, my number is below, please be generous!

On 12th September, I am cohosting a workshop that develops this and similar themes further. Please contact me if you are interested in either the workshop or personal tuition in meditation and Energy arts via email ray@ki-ways. co.uk or give me a ring on 07413 620344

A fire cannot burn forever just as we cannot stay young forever. It is not sustainable. The Energy needs to settle down and becomes what we call Earth Energy. Earth Energy transforms the excitement of Fire Energy into a more blissful feeling. A feeling of connection and of being nurtured. Earth Energy flows through you from your spleen. Your spleen energy is weakened by worry. If you worry about things, your spleen is weakened. A lot of people are worried about money and this is weakening their spleen

Now take your imagination further. Imagine that you are like a spark or flame in the fire. You rise upwards, carried by the heat of the fire and the dancing. It’s like an ecstatic journey towards the heavens. Then the heat fades. You are no longer rising like a phoenix. You just hang in the air for a while and then slowly float back to the Earth upon which you settle.

46 Let’s face it, a ham sandwich or a traditional Sunday lunch is not complete without a pot of Colman’s Mustard on the table! One of the oldest brands in Britain, it was discovered in the 17th century when Jeremiah Colman found that grinding mustard into a fine powder produced a fiery condiment. Jeremiah was a Norwich flour miller and for most of Colman’s long history mustard was sold mostly as a dry product; the mixed ready paste was only introduced in 1963. However, a lot of mustard seeds are needed in the production and by the 21st century the number of British growers had fallen, so Colman’s were increasingly relying on imported seed from Canada. A turning point came in 2007. It was a bad year after several bad years, yields were on a downward spiral and a decision had to be made. In the end eleven farmers formed the English Mustard Growers Association, centred primarily in South Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. The farmers help each other with processing and an annual price is agreed with Unilever, the new owners of Colman’s, who also agreed to invest in seed development to stop the pests. The amount of home-grown mustard seed is now ‘significantly higher’ than it was 15 years ago. The Jacobs family from Moor Farm, Newborough, is part of the cooperative and with their new shop now open and thriving they also stock the full range of Colman’s condiments. How satisfying to plant, harvest, dry and separate any rogue black seeds, watch the crop leave the farm for Easton just outside Norwich where it is milled and packed for ready mixed mustard, and sent on an onward journey to Burton-uponTrent. Then it returns to Moor Farm Shop, ready to be neatly displayed on the shelves beneath the original vintage Colman’s DSF Mustard signs! Moor Farm operates a traditional four crop rotation – a break crop is introduced to revitalise the soil and mustard fits that bill perfectly The soil is replenished with the nutrients it needs for healthy plant growth, including potassium, magnesium and sulphur. The farm grows winter wheat, spring barley, field beans, oil seed rape, sugar beet for Silver Spoon and grass which on this mixed farm is used for grazing and cut in May, shrink wrapped to preserve it, and then used as silage for the rest of the year when the grass doesn’t grow. On this farm cattle and sheep are grass fed 365 days of the year. The drought that we have experienced this summer has led to the shortest and earliest harvest on record but, explains Judith, this has led to one of the driest crops. Normally millers are looking for a 14% moisture content in the wheat crop but this year it is nearer 10% – a higher concentration of wheat not entirely good news for farmers! Elsewhere the farm has experienced a field fire on the Crowland high bank. It was thought to have been an arson attack and police are still looking for anyone who can identify a group of boys behaving suspiciously on 5th August between 3pm and 5pm. If you have any information, please contact Lincolnshire Police or the team at Moor Farm. It could have been much worse but with the help of six fire engines for six hours it was contained. The straw that was burnt would have been fed to cattle in order to preserve the

‘When pressing starts at the end of the month we anticipate yields to be down on previous summers due to the severe lack of rain at the right time of the growing season.’ He insisted that the apple juice will still taste just as Ongood!amore positive note, the ice-creams stocked in the Shop from Ferneleys Farm have flown out of the freezer. Their farm lies between Oakham and Melton and their mouth-watering ice-cream, produced in small batches from the milk of their herd of Friesian cows, is supplied in 18 different flavours. And of course their Farm Shop, with its fresh milk vending machine and panoramic views across open countryside, is well worth a visit too.

47 winter supplies of silage during the drought. Straw will be another expensive commodity for the farmer this winter, therefore the mindless waste due to arson is unnecessary and deadly to wildlife in the path of the fire.

Supplier of the local apple juice sold at Moor Farm Shop, David Fisher of Watergull Orchards, Wisbech St Mary, is expecting a lean year this year.
