An auspicious event occurred at the start of this new year, apart from the horrendous flooding which has blighted the area. This was far more pleasurable since for the first time since before 1896, when the family left, the largest gathering of the Molecey family occurred at Molecey Mill over the weekend of 5 and 6 January.

A fascinating afternoon of family and local history continued and Charlotte Molecey’s family Bible was brought back to the house. The Bible records the marriage of Charlotte to John Twigge in December 1794 and then continues to record over a hundred years of Molecey family births, deaths and marriages in its pages.

Over 25 family members, all descended from their ancestor Charles Molecey Twigge Molecey, gathered to celebrate a family birthday and to enjoy the surroundings and atmosphere of their ‘family’ home.

Charlotte was a benefactor of the Green School in Market Deeping and her contributions to Market Deeping are recorded in the church and school.

Visits to both the churchyards of St Andrew’s West Deeping and St Guthlac’s took place to discover where ancestors are buried. A wine tasting in the dovecote and a tour of the mill room as the wheel turned created an atmosphere of family joy.

Graham Magee of Molecey said how exciting it was to bring so many members of the family together in what might have been the largest gathering of the family in history.

One of Frognall’s oldest residents, John Woodhead, left us recently, aged 93. A respected Deeping St Nicholas farmer since he was 15, he started working for his father Alf as a stable boy looking after and ploughing with heavy horses, before tractors arrived on the scene. John’s Mother Daisy died soon after he was born at East Reach Farm and he was cared for as a baby by Dr Harper, from Fairfax House, Deeping Gate, who wanted to adopt him. John was a farmer to the end. He retired to Frognall and loved the hamlet and its residents. Funeral details from Scholes or IRBD. It was 20 year old Sophie Maclennan who scooped the best photo, voted by the public, in a competition run at the Cafe at Eventus. Art student, Sophie in her second year at Lincoln University took the photo at the bottom of her grandmother’s garden in Eastgate.

This year’s Royal British Legion collection reached a generous £13,400 - thanks all for your generosity!

Beautiful mother of pearl clouds spotted over Deeping after sunset in December - these Nacreous clouds usually develop in extremely cold air above the polar regions. They form only below -78C, and the effect is reminiscent of a thin layer of oil on top of water, produced as the sunlight diffracts around the tiny ice crystals inside them.

Lions’ Santa handed out presents during his visits to youngsters at Tiny Talk at the Ark in Market Deeping (pictured) and Peakirk Village Hall. Presents were also distributed to the Apache Cub Pack in Market Deeping and to children at the DSJ Primary School at their festive fair.

The evening Santa sleigh rounds of the Deepings and villages by the Deeping Lions and Rotary Clubs started on the 30th Nov taking place on 17 nights with additonal collections at Tescos on Saturdays in December. Information and updates Keep handy for future reference

On behalf of the Town, Parish and District Councils I would like to pass on thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to supporting residents and retailers with their flood defences. It was a particularly busy start to the year due to the exceptional rainfall in the first week of January and we saw the River Welland at its highest level for over 40 years, with a real and

imminent risk of flooding the town and properties all along the riverbank. It was only due to a tremendous community effort issuing sandbags and building mini-dams that prevented the Deepings from becoming inundated with flood water. It could happen again so please be prepared, keep all sandbags handy and stay vigilant.

Recycling. How are we getting on with our purple-lidded recycling bins? It is a bit different and we now have a new system to get used to. The week beginning 5th February will be the first collection of clean dry paper and cardboard. Our grey recycling bins are still used for clean glass, plastics and tins. If it is not clean then please put it in the black bin. Use your leaflet or the SKDC website to find out which bin on which week. Did you know that in SKDC, none of our waste goes to land-fill? All the contents of the black bin are also recycled and turned into useable energy by incineration.

Coronation Hall. If you were involved or interested in the survival of the Coronation Hall last year you may recall that the outdated Constitution was the stumbling block to appointing community members to the Board of Trustees. I am pleased to say that the Constitution has now been amended and the date of the AGM will be given in my next update for anyone to attend.

SKDC Local Plan Review. The Local Plan is a comprehensive SKDC document providing clear policies regulating new development across the district. The first draft of the revised version will be available for consultation later this month and it will also contain proposed sites for new housing. There will be opportunities for you to have your say and to provide feedback on the proposals.

First signs of Spring. My snowdrops are out and the daffodils are pushing through! Although these are difficult times for many of us, let’s stay hopeful that 2024 has some good things to look forward to. If you need any particular help, please refer to the contact details given in last month’s edition. 12

Deepings Leisure Centre. Progress of the Deepings Leisure Centre Group application to SKDC for Grant funding has taken a step forward. The matter was debated at length at an Extraordinary meeting of the full Council on 11th January. I am delighted to say that the application was voted on and a grant of £850,000 has now been earmarked to support the re-opening of the Leisure Centre. The release of the funding is subject to a number of robust conditions and any further progress requires a crucial decision by Lincolnshire County Council to transfer ownership of the land and building to the community group. At the time of writing, this decision is scheduled to be made in the first week of February and we should know the outcome soon.

Deepings Neighbourhood Plan Review. Following on from the Local Plan, additional consultation will begin to enable us to revise our Neighbourhood Plan. The Plan will then be updated to reflect the wishes of the residents of the Deepings. To ensure better quality design and overall layout, a major piece of consultation work is currently underway to create an overarching Design Code that is applicable for all new developments - what do we like in the Deepings and what sort of design do we want to see more of?

Freemasons from St Pega Lodge in Deeping St James raised £290 to take Christmas to children in the area who would otherwise go without. The money was raised at the Lodge’s annual car rally to support charity Deep in Kindness, which delivers not only food parcels but also presents for children who would have virtually gone without at Christmas without their help. The Call of the Wild This year the Deepings Literary Festival wants you to let your imagination run wild! Soar to the skies and let your vision be untamed! Writers aged 8-15 should submit their stories of up to 500 words – the winning storyteller will win a book voucher of £25. Judging will be by Julia Jarman. Julia has her roots in the Deepings and is well known for the books that she has written for children, including ‘The Big Red Bath’. She has recently started to write for adults; ‘The Widows’ Wine Club’ has been acclaimed by previous Literary Festival guest author, Sophie Hannah, as ‘a sparkling delight’.

Adult storytellers should submit their stories of up to 950 words – the winning author will win a book voucher of £30 and the opportunity to have their story featured in the pages of I’d rather be in Deeping magazine. Judging will be by William Shaw. William was one of the authors to appear at the Deepings Literary Festival in 2022 and writes the DS Alexandra Cupidi books set in Dungeness. ‘The Wild Swimmers’ will be published in May. Mary, Martha and the Market Deeping

Almshouses

FEATURE Almshouses (otherwise known as Bede Houses) developed during the medieval period as charitable housing for the elderly or widows. Often administered by a charity or by Trustees of the bequest which has prompted the building of the houses. In Market Deeping it was a bequest of Mary Ann Scotney that resulted in the building of the Almshouses in Church Street. Mary was a wealthy spinster, born in 1799 into a prosperous farming family from Thornhaugh. They had been tenant farmers of the Duke of Bedford and we can trace them back to 1725, when John Scotney (b.1725) married Mary Taylor of Nassington. Their son, Richard (b. 1756) married Sarah (b.1758), daughter of wealthy farmers John and Mary Whitwell from Werrington, in 1780 at All Saints Parish Church, Paston. Richard and Sarah had six children but sadly Sarah died and Richard married again, Esther Ayres at Thornhaugh on 8th December 1896. Richard and Esther’s children were Mary Ann (b.1799 – d. 1876) and her brother William (b.1797–d.1825). Mary Ann was baptised on New Year’s Day 1800 at St Andrews Parish Church in Thornhaugh. Mary Ann’s mother, Esther, died in 1807, and her father in 1820. At this time she was already a wealthy woman with land and property in Werrington and now she inherited land from her father in Barnack, Barrowden, Glapston and Thornhaugh. Initially Mary Ann went to live with her brother at Sacrewell Lodge. William was farming here with his cousin John Whitwell from Werrington. Sadly William died aged just 28 and Mary Ann went to live in Werrington where she stayed for ten years until 1835 when she bought, at auction, number 70 Church Street, Market Deeping. In the 1841 Census Mary Ann is recorded as living in Church Street with her domestic servant and companion, Martha Allison from Quadring. Mary Ann cut a splendid figure, she attended church regularly , impeccably dressed and always wearing a hat.

Having many nieces and nephews, she regularly entertained and was special friends with the Gaskell family from Thornhaugh, an old and respected local family. On Census day 1871, Susanna Gaskell, a lady of independent means, was recorded visiting Mary Ann and Martha. During the week Mary Ann would attend to business commitments of which there were many, from the extensive land and property that she had inherited and which she judiciously increased. She had had her eye on Miller’s Barn, named after John Kitchen Miller who used the barn for performances by travelling theatre companies, concerts and dances. When John Miller died a very wealthy man in 1859, Mary Ann purchased the large stone barn which was built parallel to the road and had originally been part of a farmyard along Church Street. Mary Ann sat at her desk at number 70 and planned her bequest, drawing up a list of who was to occupy her Almshouses. She laid down 21 rules, including that each resident if possible should attend a place of worship on Sundays, should sweep chimneys once a year and provide their own fire scuttle. Children were forbidden to live with the residents. When Mary Ann died in January 1876 aged 77 she predictably left a very detailed Will dated 24th November 1875, covering seven pages of hand writing. She appointed Glinton farmer, James Webster, Market Deeping merchant, John Perkins and her trusted companion, Martha, as executors. She was generous in leaving money to her nieces and nephews and her friends and she also left £100 to the parish of Werrington, the interest to be distributed by the parish church wardens and four principal farmers amongst ten unmarried women of 50 years and upwards or if there not be that number, widows of any age and the needy, sick and poor. Mary Ann left £50 to the Trustees of the Almshouses who were chosen from the leading citizens of Deeping; Solicitor, Francis

Martha set about putting her mistress’s wishes into action and instructed Stamford architect Edward Browning to design the houses which were built by John Crowson, stonemason of Deeping St James. Mary Ann had left £2700 for the work to be done. The work to clear the site and the demolish Miller’s Barn commenced in the spring of 1877 and the Almshouses were completed by autumn 1878. Martha had been instructed to sell Mary Ann’s clothes to help to fund the Almshouses. So for four weeks after 15th May 1876 a sale of Miss Scotney’s wardrobe took place: ‘Silk and other handsome dresses, shawls, mantles and every description of ladies under clothing, two riding habits, a handsome coat, gold watch, chains and seals, brooches, rings. Also one dozen fine Irish linen shirts suitable for an elderly gentleman, Sacrewell Lodge a quantity of table linen and other articles.’ resident of the Almshouses at the time of her death. FEATURE commented on the generosity of Martha Allison ‘under whose able management the whole concern has been carried out from the beginning and is now brought to a state of completion rarely to be surpassed’. The Trustees took the opportunity to tour the houses and found them in a most excellent condition and remarkable in their cleanliness. In 1891 Mary Hales was the only original occupant of the houses and as well as Eliza Lilley, she had been joined by Hannah Frisby, Mary Ann Johnson, Elizabeth Nowell and Fanny Harrison. In 1894 the meeting of the Trustees added George Vergette to their number and Mrs J. E. Smith was selected to move into the house now vacant following the death of Hannah Frisby. Ten years later Mary Ann Johnson, now 76, was not only still in residence but was carrying on her own dressmaking business. She and Eliza Lilley had been joined by Eliza Smith (76), Mary Miller (65), Ann Chesterfield (76) and Louisa Loweth (76) who was the widow of John Thomas, miller of Deeping St James.

In 1911, Mrs Watson, Eliza Roberts (67) and Sarah Bingham (70) were in occupancy, the ladies over 70 receiving their first state pension which in 1909 was five shillings a week (25 pence today). By 1921 Mary Ann Wheatley (70) and Betty Barlow (76) had been selected for a coveted place at the Almshouses. Throughout the twentieth century and until today the Almshouses remain an important feature of Market Deeping life. In 1983, the Trustees represented by Dennis Stacey, received £300 from Deepings Round Table at a presentation by Stuart Childs, Chairman, at The Deeping Stage. The money was used to install a shower in one of the bungalows and provided structural improvements to one of the houses. Today the Almshouses are looked after by the Charity of Miss Mary Ann Scotney with Trustees; Rev. George Holding, Dr Mike Osborne, Cllrs Collins and Broughton and Pauline Redshaw. E. C. Bateman ‘Death at the Auction’ and ‘Murder Most Antique’ were two titles that found themselves enrobed in festive wrappings and ribbon and under many a local tree this Christmas! This is courtesy of the fact that both books are set in the medieval stone town of Stamford and are penned by E. C. Bateman (Emily), the wife of Greg who heads up Batemans auctioneers in the town.

The Georgian Festival, which filled the town with an extravaganza of wigs and bonnets in recent years, provides the backdrop for the second book in the series, Murder Most Antique. Felicia is talked into helping with the Fair but when the headline speaker turns up dead in the hook-aduck pool, followed by more murders in quick succession, the stakes are even higher!

Emily is a jewellery and watches specialist working alongside Greg at their Ryhall Road premises. When the couple first set up home in a converted Georgian flat overlooking St Mary’s Church in the heart of the town, Emily dreamt up the idea for this series. She would sit at her desk and watch the world go by as she wrote. At the time she was writing romantic comedy but when she came to the end of a contract with her publisher she told them that she just had to set her next book in Stamford, which had stolen her heart! More than that, she told them, ‘I thought it should be crime.’ For Emily there was something about Stamford’s beauty and its sense of history which seemed the perfect backdrop for dark and mysterious goings on! ‘Having said that,’ she explains, ‘they’re definitely on the cosy end of crime. My heroine needed a vocation, and auctions are so mysterious, so arcane; people are fascinated by them.’

Emily approaches the start of each book, ‘excited but daunted and then the finish gives a rush of achievement and relief, the middle is a jigsaw puzzle which slowly fits together – challenging but satisfying!’ After so long working alone, meeting the readers is a definite bonus for Emily, that, and ‘when you first get sent the cover image, that’s always a wonderful moment, when it really starts to feel real.’

Now the couple have decamped to the surrounding countryside with their baby daughter, Flossie, but can still be spotted around the cobbled streets on a regular basis, usually being dragged along by their effervescent Cocker Spaniel, Audrey.

It is on these cobbled streets that the story unfolds. Felicia Grant, having been called back to her family’s auction house on Broad Street, uncovers the body of her father’s business rival, murdered during a packed sale. According to the blurb, ‘Felicia is swept into a mystery that has everyone in the community as a potential suspect – including her. As the body count rises and with the people she loves under threat, Felicia takes matters into her own hands. But even the most picturesque place has its secrets…’

Emily’s tips for aspiring novelists are encouraging and above all achievable. She recommends ‘Just start writing; don’t worry too much about it. Don’t try and get it perfect to begin with – that’s what editing is for!’ She also suggests, ‘Once you’ve begun, write consistently. And by that I don’t mean sitting there for hours each day. It doesn’t have to be a lot, even if you just write a page, after a year you’ll have 365 pages. That’s a book!’ Emily has a busy year in the offing, another book in the series due out in November and an appearance at ‘Murder at Molecey’ which will take place at Molecey Mill as part of the Deepings Literary Festival on Saturday 4th May. www.deepingsliteraryfestival.co.uk

I could hear the whole family getting ready with their boots on and then phew! There was my lead! I bounced into the back of the car, harness on and clipped in and off we all went. We’d travelled through Greatford, past the Hare and Hounds village pub and out on the road towards Belmsthorpe and Stamford. To the right there is a small lay-by with a fence and public footpath sign. Mum took us through the gate and over the river bridge. From there we just kept following the foot path signs up through the wooded area, off to the right and across the fields. The footpath is surrounded by private land so it’s important

to stick firmly to the footpath (that’s humans and us dogs too!). Eventually we arrived at a bridge at the roadside. Here we turned left and then immediately right, following the road round to the left towards Braceborough village. On my lead we walked through the village. We walked towards the footpath which goes off to the left with a fence alongside it. Then off we all went, following the clearly marked path all the way to Braceborough Woods. These are some of my favourite woods to walk in. They are usually super quiet and incredibly pretty. From here you can make the walk as long or short as you want. You can walk anywhere within the woods so it’s a great place to explore away. We were lucky enough to see a herd of deer along our route and the woods also have some badger sets.

This route is rural so you’ll want to make sure everyone, including your paw friends, have coats and drying towels. There’s no shops out this way so making sure you have back up water and water bowl for us is essential too. From the woods you can retrace your steps all the way back to Shillingthorpe. Alternatively you can walk on the road back to Greatford. There is also the option to park at the woods and just walk around the woods if you prefer. Back at home, I am beyond happy. I’ve had some treats, my tail is resting and I’m daydreaming of running across the fields, breathing in the most wonderful woodland smells. I wonder where Mum will take me next?

Emotional Shock Did you get through the floods on January 2nd intact? I hope that you did, but I can’t quite say the same for myself. Many people had things a lot worse than I, but I did have a horrible experience. In brief, my car was overrun by flood water. For my own safety, I had to get out of the car and very nearly fell into a ditch. This was all quite understandably upsetting but on Wednesday, the day after, I felt ‘disconnected’, from myself. It was subtle. Even after years of helping people with all sorts of emotional and mental strain, I did not recognise that I was suffering from emotional shock until a friend pointed it out to me. When she did, it was obvious. Even then, you cannot just decide that you are not being affected any more. You need to go through a process of releasing the emotional shock. On the Wednesday evening my wife and my dog were very supportive as the emotional impact of the event was released. Even after the dam broke and the emotions flowed, I still felt a little odd on the Thursday. The difference now was that the demon had revealed itself and I knew how to deal with it. Emotional shock can be very serious. It can’t kill you directly but it can adversely affect your life for a long time. If you are suffering from severe emotional shock then you should seek professional help. However, if you are more like I was – dealing with it but needing a little help – there are things that we can do to help. If we can understand the mechanism, it helps. Part of what has happened is that the fight or flight response has kicked in and not switched off properly. This is

common with all types of stress – not just emotional shock – and is a thing that I have helped many people with.

Try sitting in a quiet place. Put some relaxing music on and focus on letting your breathing slow down. This might help.

Slowing your breathing down helps to reset the part of your nervous system that has gone into overdrive.

When we are in severe shock, our bodies can shake. This is a natural way that our bodies deal with emotional shock – so we can use it. Stand up and start shaking your body. Put on some lively music. Start by shaking your hands, then elbows, shoulders and eventually the whole of your body. Whilst you are doing this breathe deeply and powerfully. Really get the air moving. Shaking and breathing has helped many people with severe emotional shock. Finally, don’t be afraid to get help. Emotional shock is not to be messed with and needs resolving. There are many who can help but if you are really struggling, your GP is a good place to start. Words and Pictures by William Bowell We live in an area of incredible riches. Of course, I’m not talking about money, dear reader; I’m talking about the history, culture, and people on our doorstep. Much of this would be unknown, unrecorded, and perhaps forgotten by most in the Deepings, if it wasn’t for a little magazine dropping through everyone’s letterbox on a monthly basis. It’s a testament to the quality of the area that we live in and the people, that such a magazine has enjoyed the longevity of 100 issues. We also are blessed to have many great places to enjoy wildlife and the natural world, around the Deepings. Over the past few years, I have enjoyed sharing some of my tales of birds, otters, butterflies, and dragon(flie)s. Deeping Lakes is very much one of the jewels of the crowns of the Deepings and even in the depths of winter can be a fantastic place to encounter local wildlife. I neglected visiting the Lakes just before the festivities of Christmas, life just got in the way. But a New Year brought new vigour and hunger to get out to my local patch.

It’s mid-January, as I write this, and so far we have experienced loads of rain, causing near floods, sub-zero conditions and now a 20-degree swing in the temperature next week is forecast. So it is fair to say that each visit to my beloved Lakes has been different so far. One thing that remains a constant joy to see is the Long-eared Owls which roost at Deeping Lakes during the winter months. I enjoy seeing these fantastic Owls during the winter, before the spring arrives and they disperse into local farmland and woods to breed. They tend to roost in the same spot, in the Gully, but occasionally they are found in a different spot; sometimes more visible, most of the time not.

They are just masters of disguise, hiding amongst the ivy and often close to the bark of the centre of the trees they roost in. Visitors’ reactions on seeing the Owls range from ‘I can’t see it’ to ‘What? That bit of brown?’ to ‘Wow! That’s amazing!’, depending on the level of visibility. Another cryptic plumaged bird that I have already seen this year at the Lakes is the Bittern. I only see them at the Lakes on a handful of occasions a year, so to find one already has been a real treat. They blend into their reedbed habitat, where they fish from, invisibly.

Glossy Ibis Luckily, one lunchtime I found one, climbing halfway up the reeds. Although at first glance, this heron appeared to be mostly hidden, closer inspection revealed you could actually see a lot of the bird; it’s just got amazing camouflage! At one point when a Red Kite flew over, the bird looked skywards, making it even more reed-like in appearance! I always remember how rare these birds were when I was young and now, although they don’t breed at Deeping Lakes, they are there every winter and I still get a buzz every time I see one.

The freezing weather did bring one surprise visitor to the reserve this continued >

January: a Red-throated Diver. This northern breeding bird usually winters off the coasts of Britain but wind or cold weather can bring them inland and for the fourth time ever, one appeared on the Lake.

I can’t not mention Otters too. When the river was in flood, they could be seen anywhere on the reserve and were enjoyed by so many visitors.

Their crisp winter plumage always looks bright in the low winter sun and their snooty, up turned bill makes them very distinctive and graceful-looking on the water.

We are very lucky to have such a great reserve on our doorstep, what ever the time of year. And I am very lucky that I get to share it each it, each month, with you! Happy 100th I’d Rather Be In Deeping everyone!

The Diver attracted quite a stream of visitors but so did the Glossy Ibis, a rare European bird which has been around since mid-October, when I first found it. Glossy by name, glossy by appearance; if this bird stays to the spring it really will be quite something to look at. And then there have been Cattle and Great White Egrets on the reserve, both birds which 15 years ago would have been a dream to see on the reserve at all, let alone at the same time! Not to mention the impressive gatherings of wildfowl, which look just splendid at this time of year.

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. Lasting Powers of Attorney What are they? Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf. These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

Probate What is it? When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
