This month our Deeping office will have been open for two years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Deeping and the Villages who entrusted us to handle the sale of their properties. It is our commitment to continue to work hard for our customers, to continue to grow our business and to continue to provide and improve upon our excellent level of service.
Here is what our customers have to say about us
“
We have nothing but praise for Newton Fallowell in the way that they have handled our house sale. They kept us in the loop at all times and acted quickly and efficiently in order to bring about a very quick sale. If we should move again, we would definitely like to use this company

“
Having just moved 2 weeks ago we were extremely happy with the service provided by Newton Fallowell. From the first visit to value our property to the final moving day both Jonathan Brewell and Tom were always available to answer our questions and support us in every way possible. We would definitely recommend Newton Fallowell, especially Market Deeping Branch for their service and professional handling of our sale. Julia & Peter Crawford
”
“
Just a quick note to thank you for your hard work concluding in the successful sale of my house. Your honesty, advice and assistance during the process was really appreciated and ensured that any hurdles we came up against were negotiated with the minimum of fuss. I wish you every success in the future and would heartily recommend you above all other agents in the area. Regards, Ken. Mr Glindon

So on behalf of the Deepings Business Club we have great pleasure in launching the 2016 Deeping Business Awards. To be held at the Deepings School Conference Centre, the black tie event will be held on 30th September and will honour the Best Service Company to include support services including IT and legal and financial services, the Practical Excellence Award to span manufacturing and including trades people, those providing excellence in Hospitality, and another for Health and Wellbeing, Retailer of the Year, charities and social enterprise offering a service to the community, Arts & Crafts and Media and an award for those offering outstanding customer service. There will also be a Lifetime Achievement Award, a Chairmans’s discretionary award and overall there will be a Deepings Business of the Year. Nominations are open now until the end of May. Says Nick Ash, Event Coordinator, “We have hidden out light under a bushel for far too long. The Deeping Business Awards gives us a chance to celebrate our successes and the people who have created them. The awards are centred on the community and we are now inviting nominations for the awards from people who live and work in the Deepings. Lincolnshire Credit Union is providing a real alternative for those in need of a loan but are unable to pay unreasonable rates of interest charged elsewhere. One Deeping St James resident recently became unwell and as a result had to reduce her hours of work and was only able to make minimum payments on her credit card. Turning to the Credit Union she saved a small amount of money each week to satisfy them that she was reliable and then applied for a loan to pay off her credit card bill finding that paying off the Credit Union loan monthly is very much cheaper. When The Deepings Free Discussion heard of a particularly unpleasant burglary in the summer they collected together and on Christmas Eve some representatives of the Forum (Aimee Nevearson pictured right) went with PCSO Raechell Last to present the cash. Along with the donation was a voucher for Jamie Clark of JC Security to install a panic alarm for the victim free of charge. Christmas was a very fitting time to do this and the family was overwhelmed by the gesture. 7

Priory Players 2016 Panto ‘Beauty & The Beast’ After a successful year of fundraising as Market Deeping Town Mayor 2014-15, Cllr. Roy Stephenson, presented £1595.50 to one of his chosen charities, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, at The Deeping Lakes, in October. Managed by the Bourne branch members, the Lakes provide nesting sites for wildlife, particularly birds, and is open year round. And the best bit? Entry is free although donations are always welcome. Dave Vandome, Volunteer Nature Reserve Manager, received the cheque and revealed that the money will be spent on installing tern rafts enabling common terns that fly up the River Welland to nest on Sanctuary Lake. Viewing screens will also be purchased.

Christmas 2015 will be remembered as the one when Oscar the cat went for his evening stroll on Christmas Eve and failed to return. Enticed by the smell of roast beef, Oscar had entered an outbuilding in Horsegate and was discovered by Cheryl Nuttall who let him out several days later. This was before realising that his owners had been searching for him on Facebook and with leaflets all over the holiday. He eventually showed up somewhat timidly at home to the relief of his bereft owners to ensure a positive start to the New Year! 9

FEATURE
February 1855 and Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Albert with several of the royal children promenaded the walks of the Serpentine with their sledges. It was recorded that the footpaths were crowded with members of the nobility and gentry. Unfortunately, 30 ladies and gentlemen were seriously injured by being run down and cut by the points of the skates. In the capital no fewer than 93,000 people amused themselves by sliding or skating on the frozen waters in the different royal parks; many accidents occurred but fortunately no lives were lost. In this part of the country the skaters were notably more proficient. Winter was a time when working on the land was prevented by frost and snow; it was a time when ice skating on the frozen washes was a competitive Fenland sport. Cowbit and Crowland washes in particular were renowned for skating and local champions were celebrated. A Minute Book of 1728 held by the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society records that ‘Mr Harrison Baker of this town goes on ice skates with a velocity and grace of a Dutch Hollander and can do a mile in three minutes.’
“The opening meeting for the 1855-56 season commenced on a beautiful sheet of ice opposite Crowland Church”
Skating matches between Cowbit and Crowland were hotly contested. “The opening meeting for the 1855-56 season commenced on a beautiful sheet of ice opposite Crowland Church, a noted place for fast skating in the Lincolnshire Fens. There were the Hicklings, the Parkers, Godwins, Saplees and the Williams of Crowland and the Harrisons, the Halls and the Ridlingtons of Cowbit – all fast skaters, though their achievements had diminished in recent years. It was said that the present race of skaters did not have the speed they had in those days, which may be attributed to the shortness of the winters compared to what they once were. A fine young man named Garner of Cowbit was thought to be the fastest up to Saturday 3rd when he was obliged to yield to the superior skill of a youth named Williams of Crowland, only 18 and of small stature, a thoroughbred skater with the old easy style, promising to retain the laurels for which Crowland had so long been noted.” The Crowland brass band was in attendance for the skating meeting held at Brotherhouse Bar later that month when the princely prize of £10 was awarded to the winner. A large crowd gathered and it was reported that ‘Turkey Smart, Mr Register and a fast man from Durham’ would attend. They did not turn up though, as they had been engaged to run for a larger amount elsewhere. However 16 entries were made and on this occasion Garner reasserted himself and beat Hurn to take the prize. Turkey Smart, great-great grandfather of Frognall resident Steve Fisk, was thus called because when he skated he gave the appearance of being a turkey. His brother was known as Fish Smart for a similar reason. continued >

Enthusiasm for the sport did not decline and in 1856, although a thaw had partially set in, there was the largest assemblage on Cowbit Wash that the reporter ever remembered seeing. Some thousands had congregated including a fair sprinkling of the gentler sex. The ice was in better condition than might have been anticipated considering the thaw and the company was generally in the best of spirits. All promised well and after several of the skaters had had their mile run up and down the New River, all eyes were centred on Garner of Cowbit and Sharp of Crowland. The bets were three to one on the latter, as he had beaten Garner in every previous match of the season. However, on this occasion Garner beat him in gallant style and with apparent ease, after which complaints were loud and continuous to the effect that ‘it was a complete sell!’ The commentators had their own opinion but they certainly had never before seen Garner ‘do the thing so easily’. About 5 o’clock, a poor and unfortunate girl, Lucy Poole, in crossing the river sank up to her chin and it was with some difficulty she was bought to land. One day in January 1856, as Mr Henry Tinsley was skating with a friend towards Cowbit; with the wind at a strong pace. There was a plank across the drain from bank to bank which they did not see until they were close to it; the gentleman who was in advance called out, stooped and passed safely under, but the warning was so momentary that Mr Tinsley had not had time to escape it and his head struck against it with fearful force. The plank caught him between the eyes and inflicted a very severe bruise. It was said, “Had the blow been on the forehead there is no doubt that the blow would have been a fatal one.”
Walter Pridgeon was Lincolnshire Skating Champion for over 30 years from 1900, only losing his title to Bert Slater, 18, of Crowland in 1933. The Lincolnshire Free Press reported on an Ice Carnival on Cowbit Wash where the first championship was held for 12 years and where Bert retained his title: “There were animated scenes on the Crowland and Cowbit washes since Wednesday, when the ice first became safe. Since then thousands had been enjoying the sport, including many from the Deepings as land and office workers were given days off as due to snow and freezing conditions many businesses were closed. Much of the glory and colour of the olden days had been re-created. Until Saturday the ice was in splendid condition and there was a thickness of several inches, even the River Welland was safe enough to skate on. The favourite spot though was opposite Cowbit Church from where it was possible to skate to the opposite bank. Most parts of the vast stretch of many acres were occupied by skaters of all skills.’ The Ladies Half Mile Championship was won by Mrs Margaret Culy beating Mrs Thomas, better known as Nellie Slater, sister of Bert, who had held the Championship for 18 years, first winning the Championship at the age of 11 in 1929. This perhaps should not come as a surprise as their father had been a professional champion in Lincolnshire for 16 years.

‘Where real ale meets mushroom tea’ - R2 Rock ‘n’ Reel magazine People watching, tales of ancient times, English folklore and poems such as Goblin Market by Christian Rossetti are just some of the influences on the music and song-writing of local band, Pennyless. When Penny Stevens met Les Woods playing in local pubs around Bourne, her interest in playing the violin that she had learnt as a child was re-kindled and it was not long before the pair were playing as a duo. At the Riverside Festival on Stamford Meadows in 2009, multi-instrumentalist Graham Dale joined the team with his array of flutes and whistles and percussion instruments and he soon became a permanent member of the group. As their popularity has grown, they are gigging nearly every weekend of the year, and collaborations with the John Clare Trust, Stamford Arts Centre and farther afield with the Fairyland Trust have followed. Playing at Pirate festivals, the Sleaford and Water Newton Music Festivals and the Moira Furnace Folk Festival in north

Leicestershire, Pennyless are equally at home playing in Mama Liz’s, a church setting or as troubadours at the Real Halloween at Holt Hall in Norfolk. John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, of folk group Pentangle, remembered popularly for the theme tune to the early 70s’ TV series Take Three Girls, ‘Light Flight’, are just some of the influences on Les’s music. Penny’s love is for English music: David Bowie for his inventiveness, Jethro Tull, Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd and the Incredible String Band. ‘In fact,’ explains Penny ‘we have been told that we sound like a cross between Mike Oldfield and the Incredible String Band.’ But the choral music of 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis and Vaughan Williams’ string quartets also feature along with Beethoven and the young folk fiddler, Seth Lakeman. Penny, whose roots are in Norfolk but who was bought up in the West Midlands, is a botanist who came to the area as an employee of the Nature Conservancy Council in Peterborough. Married to a vet who had bought the Exeter Vet Centre in Bourne, the family had three children, James, Ellie and Lizzie. After the couple split, Penny became more and more interested in the music she had loved when she was younger and it was when she was booking Les to play at a birthday party that they realised their shared interest.

“If you want to journey into a world of fantasy, mystery and magic then have a listen to the album Hanging Moon” Janet Lavender first approached Penny to teach the violin at Deeping St James Community Primary School, a role that Penny embraced with gusto. ‘Although I am classically trained,’ Penny says, ‘I do understand that the violin is a difficult instrument for children to play and so I try to make every lesson fun, to play the simple tunes well and to enjoy the music!’ Penny’s connection with children and the empathy that she demonstrates in her teaching techniques has proved an irresistible combination and unsurprisingly she now is in demand for classes throughout Deeping and Baston as well. Their appreciation of the simple things that money can’t buy is evident in the lifestyle of this creative couple for whom living in the moment is a prime motivator. A visit to Stonehenge for the Winter Solstice is a highpoint in the calendar, the opportunity to listen to the music of small unknown bands and to take the time to chat to friends and to savour the beauty of nature is all brought to bear on their song-writing. ‘If you want to journey into a world of fantasy, mystery and magic then have a listen to the album Hanging Moon; it feels like Lincolnshire meets Lord of the Rings!’ says Mardles Suffolk Folk magazine. The Band are currently compiling a new 12 track album with a Spring release date recorded with Tom Savage at Jigsaw Studio. With a very original English storytale/psychedelic flavour rather than traditional folk. Raising funds for Thurlby Church, Pennyless will perform in the Church on Saturday 30th April. SPRING
Spruce up for Spring The Mole had been working hard all morning spring-cleaning his home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur…
Kenneth Graeme in The Wind in the Willows paints a graphic scene of spring cleaning. But where do we start? Jonathan Brewell of local Estate Agents, Newton Fallowell says, “There is no doubt about the impact that the entrance to the home makes on potential buyers, in this instance first impressions really do count.” You never know who will be stepping over the threshold; so the porch, front door and hall are a great place to embark on a spring spruce up! The most important aspect of the door area is to let postmen, deliverers and in the event of a fire or illness, the emergency services know exactly where you are. Comments First Responder, Peter Ward, “Too often door numbers are either well hidden or non-existent and valuable moments are lost as we have to look for the right address.” Now a great alternative to the conventional door numbers can be found at outlets such as The
Lampshade Warehouse Lighting Outlet, who advise, “There are a variety of solutions, it is possible to pick up a light box on which house numbers can be stuck for as little as £30£40. These can come with LED bulbs where just 6 watts can give an output of approx. 40 watts so they are very efficient. Also available are light bulbs with a dawn to dusk sensor built in, which tick all the boxes.” Alternatively there are classic lantern styles available as well as more modern designs with the popular wall wash lighting that can give accent to attractive features. Quite often the front garden will look much better with a brisk sweep after the wet and windy winter months and a firm broom with hard bristles is a great investment as it really does the hard work for you. Many homes have UPVC front doors which easily become grubby but just as easily can be made to look as good as new with products such as Astonish UPVC Cleaner, just £1.00 from Insideout. Wooden doors do benefit from a regular coat of varnish and if space allows, a curtain of deckchair-type fabric drawn across on very sunny days will provide protection. If on the other hand you feel a replacement door is what is needed and would like to try a stylish wooden door then Acorn Joinery on Northfields Industrial Estate provide well made, smart doors employing excellent craftsmanship. Dave Jellis of Garage Doors and Shutter Services recommends keeping an eye out for corrosion on the metal parts of your garage door, “Always a good idea to check frames, locks and hinges frequently.” Doormats are easy to replace and quickly create a smart appearance. door exposed to the weather, which ideally should be rubber, while inside coir mats are more suitable. The company provides a great selection and advice. Doormats also feature at Insideout Store and include those from UK supplier Bruce Starke, established in 1899. Plenty of inspiration at www.brucestarke.com. Moving inside, after the spiders’ webs have been removed and the floors given a good scrub then soft furnishings may need to be taken down and cleaned. Swift Laundry provide professional cleaning services and are located behind Terry Wrights Cycle Store. If replacement is what is needed, Pippa Burdock of Fusion suggests that door curtains can be fully lined with a thick interlining or a thermal fabric to alleviate any draughts near the front door and to help with energy efficiency. With new fabric Spring collections in store, the company also offers a home measurement and fitting service.
Lampshades can cast a yellowish glow when dusty and fabric ones can benefit from a wipe with a micro fibre cloth or an unused make up brush to get rid of particles of dust, while glass shades always benefit from a careful wash in a washing up bowl. If replacement is what is needed then height is a consideration and a lampshade that hugs the ceiling may be a sensible option, although hanging glass lanterns are a perennially popular solution. Again there is a great selection at the Lampshade Warehouse Lighting Outlet. Worn out? Bored? So was Mole who said ‘Hang spring -cleaning!’ and bolted out of the house without having put on his coat.” But what satisfaction to know it’s all looking spick and span when you come home!

MARRIAGE
Love for a Lifetime: Marriage “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Rumi, Persian poet and mystic (c. 1207 to 1273) makes you both happy and what you have achieved individually and together.
Whether you are planning a wedding, recently married or have celebrated many anniversaries, everyone’s experience of marriage is unique. Understanding our emotional self and all aspects of communication make a great recipe for a healthy loving relationship.
Marriage is a journey of two individuals sharing love, laughter, sorrow and fear, creating happiness every day of the year.
Love is an Inside Job No person, situation or possession can make us happy and loved. We generate the love and happiness within ourselves through our own choices and experiences. You could say marriage is the love we have found within ourself, and how we share this love with others. “When I follow my heart, the truth whispers love.” Emma Lannigan Great Expectations Knowing what is important to each partner in a marriage (our values) help us create a level of expectation around the framework of life together. It allows each partner to understand and respect each others values, needs and wants and reducing unnecessary misunderstandings. 7% of Your Communication is Words (Birdwhistell’s Communication Theory 1970) Communication is much more than words. It requires all our senses and some communication is so subtle we don’t even notice it. 38% comes from our pace and tone of voice, and 55% through our physical body. Add to this the intention and energy you create with each communication and interaction; it can all be the difference between a positive exchange or disagreements. Building our self-awareness helps us notice these subtle communications and creates more positive experiences. 24
Lifetime of Give. Play. Love. Learn Give: Marriage invites us to give love, support, kindness and share quality time together. Play: Having your own and shared interests, and creating time to play adds fun, energy and adventure to your marriage. Love: Looking after ourselves allows us to share our health and happiness in the marriage. When you are happy and healthy those around you will be too. Learn: Marriage is a continuous opportunity to learn about who we are; to challenge our fears and support each other achieve lifetime dreams. Celebrate Your Love Anniversaries are easy to remember and act as time to celebrate your life and love together. In addition, celebrate daily the highs and the lows of every day life you will both gain strength and gratitude within your relationship. You will be able to focus on what
Buttons The unique character of a button creates a thumb print for life, The type of uniqueness found in husband and wife. A round one, a square one, a flower, even a butterfly, There is always a button to find and tie. Together, to fasten and close, The button then does propose, To hold tightly, yet lightly, for support, Wherever on the journey they get caught. A button will be, forever, When the stitching is careful and clever. With love and attention, the key, In their lifetime will joy and happiness be. Ufford Hall
‘Chim chim-in-ney, Chim chim-in-ney Chim chim cher-ee! A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be! Chim chim-in-ney, Chim chim-in-ney Chim chim cher-oo! Good luck will rub off when I shakes ‘ands with you!’
At the heart of the household, the fireplace was not only a source of heat but also essential for cooking and boiling water. To ensure that it was working properly the chimney sweep had a key role to play. Superstition had it that if a bride was introduced to a sweep on her wedding day then she would be successful as a mistress of hearth and home. Furthermore, on one occasion the horses pulling King George II’s carriage bolted and the only person attempting to stop them was a small sooty figure, a chimney sweep. From then on if a bride saw a sweep’s brush emerging from a chimney on the way to the church then this was thought to bring even greater good luck. To this day to see a chimney sweep and receive the kiss of luck after the ceremony is considered to be very lucky indeed. The York family of Deeping St James were the local chimney sweeps for generations. Edward (Ted) was the last in the line and followed his father James, grandfather Thomas and his great-grandfather. His Uncle Sam was also in the trade as was his Uncle Peter, in Spalding.
Thomas had been a Master Sweep, registered and licensed by the government and he proudly wore a big brass plate, his badge of office. He had eight horse-and-carts in constant use with a man and boy to each, charging one penny a sweep. The family continued >
27
Greatford Hall
Eighteen gallons of beer were on tap for the sweeping. Ted’s procedure was to tie a length of string round his waist and pull the beer, lodging it on the bend, and then when he proceeded to the top he would haul the beer up, after which he would regale himself with a hard earned drink. By this time the price of sweeping a chimney had risen to 3d a chimney, but it was a hard life. Ted often ran behind the cart for miles along deeply rutted old fen roads. At the age of 17 he ‘hopped it’ as his five brothers had done and joined the Army, and he served in the First World War. On demobilisation, he returned home and to the old call of sweeping but in a business of his own. Soon he was the only York left to carry on the family tradition and life was strenuous. It was common for him to cycle to Crowland and sweep as many as 32 chimneys between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. business was advertised on a large board as dealers in black flour used in gardens and read: ‘Thomas York he lives here, Sweeps chimneys clear and not too dear, And if by chance they get on fire. He’ll put them out at your desire.’ The family worked over a large area and their constant engagements included the sweeping of 13 halls, including Walcot, Shillingthorpe, Greatford, Ufford, Laxton and Uffington. Their area extended to Thorney. When Ted was only a young lad of ten in 1906 the stern edict went out from father, James, ‘No school for you tomorrow. You’re going to work with me!’ In that hard way, Ted’s working life began, and he was shown the ropes by his cousin, Fred. Barefooted and only a slight lad, he could not climb the widening chimneys at the top and so was followed by Fred on whose shoulders he stood. After three years working as a boy, he proudly thought that he had reached manhood when his father announced, ‘I am paying you two shillings a week and you buy your own clothes.’ His early memories, recorded in an interview with the Lincs Free Press in 1963, were vivid and he recalled that it took three days to sweep all the chimneys at Walcot Hall, which were always swept in spring. The kitchen chimneys, however, were swept every six weeks when they turned out at 2 a.m.; the job had to be done by 6.00 a.m. in time for breakfast to be made. 28
Shillingthorpe Hall
During his career he saw big changes in house design and regretted the loss of big chimneys and better coal which meant fewer chimneys to be swept. Chimney smoking had been unknown, but by the sixties, the problem was to stop this from happening, necessitating the use of cowls and bends in the narrow chimneys to make a draught. At this time, Ted lived in one of the cottages by High Locks in Bridge Street, a familiar figure doing his local round, but in a more leisurely fashion now, semi-retired and driving a car.
Outside of working hours, Ted was a keen sportsman. Prominent in the boxing world in his army days, he was also a motor racing and wrestling fan, rarely missing the nearest meeting. He was a leading competitor in the old water sports in the Welland and for several years he won the ‘climbing the greasy pole’ event, the obstacle race and diving for a horseshoe. An expert shot, he won many trophies for clay pigeon shooting and his gun and black Labrador were his inseparable companions. He died in 1977 at the age of 81, bringing the York dynasty to an end.

Ferry Meadows, Peterborough Old Sulehay Woods, Yarwell
Image: Wildlife Trust
Old Sulehay is a WildlifeTrust nature reserve near Wansford and Yarwell. It’s a large reserve with a number of different habitats, including an ancient woodland, scrub, reedbed and dry grassland. The woodland area is particularly pretty in spring with bluebells, wild garlic and wood anemones carpeting the ground. It’s a great place for a walk, wildlife spotting or some hide-and-seek. See more at www. wildlifebcn.org/reserves/old-sulehay 34
There’s always plenty to see and do at Ferry Meadows. One of the best places to see snowdrops at Ferry Meadows is in Bluebell Wood (also good for bluebells in April). Ferry Meadows has three play areas. One near the Lakeside centre, the Otter Playground, for younger children, next to the Visitor Centre and another is by Overton Lake (currently under construction). Finish the day with a cup of tea and piece of cake in the visitors centre café or try the café by the water sports lake. For more information see www.neneparktrust.org.uk/ferry-meadows.
