Welcome
This is not so much by way of a welcome but an ah ha we found you! Over 500,000 years ago a large mammal, over twice the size of a modern day elephant, roamed locally. The animal, too old to be a woolly mammoth, was probably an Elephant Antiquus and lost one of its tusks in Baston where it was found during a recent excavation of a gravel pit there. The tusk has been sent away for examination, tests and ultimately preservation by a Paleontologist at Nottingham University. Explains its finders, “We have been told by an expert that this is not the tusk of a 10,000 year old mammoth which we originally thought, but that of a predecessor some half a million years earlier. It is believed to be pre Ice Age probably from the Caledonian period and its size has been judged by remains found elsewhere in Britain a few years ago. No other bones or remains were uncovered with the tusk so either this huge animal had a massive toothache or more than likely lost it in a fight as the tip of the tusk is missing. Eventually we will receive it back from Nottingham when a decision will be taken on a suitable, probably local home for it. As you might have guessed Deeping is not only a vibrant community now but it had it’s moments over half a million years ago too! 3

A dozen local teenagers took part in the National Citizen Service this summer. Working with mentor, Bethan McKay, the group spent a week at Nottingham University learning business skills, a week team building at PGL in Caythorpe and then organised a fun day in which £200 raised went to Help for Heroes. In their last week of the scheme they erected a picket fence around the Market Deeping Cricket Club pitch. Bethan said, “Seeing the young people progress over the past four weeks has been extremely rewarding. Their hard work has paid off in making a positive contribution in Market Deeping”
Landmark Cat When Rose Kachra arrived in the UK from Tangier in the sixties it would not have occured to her that within her lifetime she would be opening the first purpose built care home for Country Court Homes. Rose Lodge, named in her honour was opened by her son with Mayor, Wayne Lester at a sun kissed ceremony in September. The home will house 31 residents and stands in the grounds of Holland House, also run by the company. Magic and hardwork were the words used by her son who describes his mothers career in the care home business which saw her purchase the first care home for the company now employing over 1,000 people in the UK and looking after over 1,000 vulnerable people.
Woody the three legged cat with wonderlust achieved some notoriety on facebook this summer when he went missing having, unusually, stayed out overnight. The cat who is perhaps the best travelled in Deeping, notching up overnight stays with his owners as far away as Cheddar Gorge and Whitby, eventually reappeared to resume his busy holiday schedule with a bank holiday weekend in Kings Lynn. 9

Ploughing Match
FEATURE
Showcasing the skills passed from father to son through the ages, the Deeping Ploughing Match is a long standing competition of traditional and modern methods of agricultural techniques, attracting farmers from across the region. Planning for the Match originally took place at the Three Tuns and now at the Bull in the Market Place. Organised by the Deeping & District Agricultural Association, the Match involves upwards of 80 competitors from Lincolnshire, Rutland and beyond. They take part in one of the ten machinery classes where vintage and classic tractors compete over the furrows for a four-hour period. ‘It was not always so,’ remembers Richard Allen, Secretary from 1969-2014. ‘We would get 26-28 competitors typically but when people caught on to the vintage side of things in the 80s then it really took off!’ The Match was first conceived in 1944 by Alf Woodhead (Deeping St Nicholas), Jim and Dick Smith (Towngate), Dick and Horace Reedman (Langtoft), Frank Allen, Sonny Whitfield and George Charity (Deeping St James). Vic Peasgood and Ray Woodward (both of Langtoft), Alec Harwood (Deeping St James), Gordon Charity (Deeping St James) and Tony Smith (Towngate) were all early members of the Committee, and it is thought that George Knipe was the founder secretary. As described vividly in the Lincs Free Press in 1953: ‘Jingling decorated harnesses, the noise of the well-kept plough biting into the stubble covered ground and the thud of hooves as four teams of horses carried on their centuries old work were a great attraction at Market Deeping Ploughing Match. Entries compared well with previous years, the sheep dog competition showed an increase and this feature is becoming outstanding.’
‘Jingling decorated harnesses, the noise of the well-kept plough biting into the stubble covered ground and the thud of hooves’
Competitors vie with each other for an array of Cups. In 1953 the Cup for the best turnout of horses was won by a well-known member of a Langtoft farming family, Arthur Reedman of Towngate, a skilled ploughman of many years’ standing. Mr M. Reedman won the W. M. Friend Cup for the best work with an International Tractor and the Leverton Cup was won by Mr L. Simpson of Market Deeping for the best work with a Nuffield Tractor. Other local winners included A.E. Hare of Deeping St James, W.E. Sargeant of Towngate and J. E. Smith of Towngate won the cup for the best exhibit of Mangolds and Sugar Beet. Prizes were presented by Mr E W. Thacker, President of Deeping & District Ploughing Match Committee, who thought that the horse ploughing was simply superb! continued >

FEATURE
The 1960 Match took place at Vergette’s land at Towngate West under heavy cloud, light mist and drizzle which limited the number of spectators. Mr R. Knight of Great Casterton won the Championship for the fourth time with the 1959 Champion, Mr Dexter, the reserve, who also bagged a number of other prizes including the Fordson Prize for the best work with a Fordson. Mr Knight commented that the conditions were very sticky, the worst that he had ever known at a Match. Judges were impressed with the mangolds and sugar beet and one potato exhibit was singled out for a special prize by Mr F. Richardson. Three years later the Match was held at Langtoft Road by kind permission of Messrs G. M. Vergette, G. F. Pawlett and J. E. Smith. Perfect weather conditions prevailed with sun in the afternoon and local competitors were joined by some from as far away as Witney in Oxfordshire. Mr P. R. Marshall and Mr E. Money of Sleaford, who judged the barley, declared the samples from the winner, Messrs Peasgood & Sons of Langtoft, were the best seen that year. The winners went on to gain the first prize for the Lincs & Rutland District in the National Malting Barley Competition at the Corn Exchange in London. The Chairman of the 1963 Show was Mr F.C.Allen who said while of good standard, he had seen better ploughing at previous matches. Good work was done by the ‘one ways’ which Mr Allen thought would be the plough of the future. The soil was just right for ploughing but the more general use of the combine harvester meant the stubble was much longer and more difficult to plough than in the old days when the binder was in use. Vintage tractors continue to attract interest and this was the case also in 1963 by a 1921 4hp Rushton & Hornsby portable engine, bought for scrap but now repainted green with wheels of red and gold by Mr Knight of Casterton. Mr J Woodhead of Deeping St Nicholas won the competition for how long a tractor would run on six pints of diesel oil. Other local winners included Mr J.T. Exton of Market Deeping in three sugar beet classes while Mr F.C. and H.S. Allen of Deeping St James won the red potatoes class. 12
The weather has not always been so kind; in 1973 a slow crawl through fog from Selby in the early morning did not dim the prowess of ploughman Mr R.T. Norman of Cottenham, who gained the unanimous vote for Champion by the Judges. Ploughing by steam traction engines by Mr F.Coupland’s engines from Frithville were the main attraction of the day, bringing in a large number of spectators. Mr Pickard presented the prizes and he said, ‘In farming one of the most important things was a wellploughed field with its promise of a good crop.’ The last time Steam ploughing by F. Coupland took place was in 1994 at Sly Bros Hospital Farm in Deeping St Nicholas in celebration of 50 years of the Ploughing Match. Now, after 70 years, the Match has only been cancelled on three occasions: in the early 1960s, in 2001 as a result of foot and mouth disease, and in 2012 due to wet weather. Ron Knight entered his 50th match in 2002 at David Branton’s Willow Tree Farm in Deeping St Nicholas and he later became a Judge with his son Brian, from Great Casterton, still ploughing. This year the Match will be held on 31st October at 9.15 a.m., Thetford House Farm, Baston by kind permission of Mr M Richardson www.deepingploughing.org Research: Joy Baxter, Trevor Harwood Photographs: Graham & John Charity, John Woodhead

PROFILE
John Mills - Plumber at art Local plumber, John Mills has always had a passion for art. He joined his father in the family firm after studying plumbing for four years at Peterborough Tech but it was a present given to him by his Mother for his 21st birthday which fuelled a passion which has stayed with him all his life. The simple box of oil paints gave rise to faltering efforts at first but gradually the views of the river, the lakes and the old buildings of the Deepings were immortalised on his canvases, gracing many family homes, the gift of choice for those with relatives and friends living away. With a portfolio spanning Venice and Madeira and including the North Norfolk coast, it is a print of Low Locks and the depictions of old Deeping from old postcard scenes that have proved most popular. John also takes on commissions, perhaps the most unusual being the painting of a prize winning pigeon for local enthusiast, Barry Thirtle. For many years John and wife Carole organised the exhibition for local artists at the Deeping Show. John is eldest of the two sons of Arthur Mills from Edenham who, having plyed his trade on the Grimsthorpe Estate saw an opportunity in the Deepings. In 1949, Fred Otter, the plumber here had retired and Arthur moved into a small cottage at the top of Frognall. His father had been a blacksmith, responsible for making the straps for the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, his mother, her family originally Huguenots, had come from a fruit farming family in Wisbech but Arthur was to make Deeping his own. The only plumber in the area which was much smaller then than it is now of course, Arthur soon got to know everyone in the neighbourhood. The family moved out of Frognall, they liked the village but the sound of frogs would keep them awake at night! 14
Towngate was also considered to be separate from the rest of Deeping at this time. It was surrounded by cornfields and it was here that Arthur was to build his dream house replete with cellar and snooker room.
‘...it was a present given to him by his Mother for his 21st birthday which fuelled a passion which has stayed with him all his life’
John attended the little school in Deeping St James where he was taught by Nancy Titman and then went to the Green School in Market Deeping followed by the Endowed School in Church Street, Market Deeping. With Miss Moppet as headmistress, there were so many pupils that overspill classes were held at the top of the White Horse! After a brief spell at a secondary school in Bourne, John was the first pupil to be enrolled at the Deepings School in 1958 with a roll of 240 and where he later became Head Boy with Mr Lamb as Head Teacher.
John had a happy childhood, he remembers the river teeming with eels, often eaten by locals and on one occasion a sheet of elvers by the High Locks sign. A treat was a visit to the Empire Cinema where you could sit in the front seats for sixpence (2.5p today). Once a year there would be a free show for local school children; when black & white comedy films were shown. Mrs Cornwell’s sweet shop was opposite St Guthlacs Church, home to liquorice whirls and sherbet dips. Not so happy were memories of Beaumont the dentist, an old fashioned teeth puller. John married local girl, Carole, daughter of Dick Wootten a haulage contractor and coach proprietor, responsible for all the school runs in the fifties, trips to the seaside and taking workers to Smedleys. The pair would go to Bill Mulligan’s Coffee bar opposite the Empire in Market Deeping, with a group of friends they approached Horace Thompson, then owner of the Manor House in DSJ. He

let them have the top room in the adjacent barn where they formed ‘The Grey Lady Club’ after the apparition who was said to haunt the area. This proved a popular venue for local teenagers in the early 60’s. However there was a shaky start to the courtship when John preferring his trusty old bike to a four wheeled alternative was seen by Carole cycling round Market Deeping island with a toilet pan under his arm (a new one!). She confided to her friend Gill Witt, ‘that’s it if he doesn’t start driving soon I’m going to finish with him!‘ All was well and they went on to have a family of four and lived in Broadgate Lane for 37 years before moving to the barn conversion which John and his son, Philip converted over a period of two years. John helped with leadwork repairs on St Guthlacs Church roof in 1967 just as the Avenue and new Vicarage were being built. One of his more unusual jobs was erecting the 21 foot high Christmas tree each year in the Rectory at Market Deeping for the Joliffe family. It was the back of the same building that saw one of the most catastrophic cases in his career when the family were on holiday and a burst pipe in the loft saw water gushing through the building. After fifty years of plumbing, John now has an administrative role in the business with Philip poised to take over on his retirement. The longest established plumbers in the Deepings, spanning three generations. A 1958 Bedford van has been restored by Philip to replicate the van which John drove in the early 60’s. John will be exhibiting in the I’d rather be in Deeping Winter Fair on Nov 13 Priory Church Hall, DSJ see page 35. 15

FASHION
Five top trends
to watch for this autumn… Ria Taylor keeps a close eye on what’s hot and what’s not! With the summer nights drawing in and the inevitable return of having the central heating on fast approaching, it’s fair to say that British summer time is well and truly over. Autumn has arrived, which for me means it’s the beginning of the best season of the year for fashion! Nothing screams autumn more like oversized, chunky jumpers, digging your favourite pair of boots out of the wardrobe and flaunting the fabulous return of your statement trench coat. It’s true, there are many key pieces which come, go and return again every autumn, but these are some of the top trends you need to watch out for – and master for the perfect look this season.
The maxi coat
Khaki My favourite colour of last season is here to stay – khaki, the one colour that goes with pretty much everything. I enjoyed matching it with nudes, pinks and browns for summer, but experiment with navy, burgundy and grey for a palette more suitable for autumn.
A longline duster ‘maxi’ coat is one of the best ways to wrap up warm this autumn, as it can be worn to both dress up or dress down outfits. Team a camel trench style maxi coat with a dress and heels for ultimate glam, or pair a knitted wrap-around with trainers for on-trend sports style.
Modern monochrome Dress: £28.00, sleeveless cardigan: £20.00, both Dorothy Perkins
The statement white blouse A white blouse is a key wardrobe piece for this season because of its simplicity and versatility. Perfect for throwing on with your favourite pair of jeans or looking sharp at the office, this piece is a must.
Blouse: £35.00, Marks and Spencer
Skirt: New Look, £14.99
Coat: F&F, £29.00
Always a favourite in every season, monochrome is in, but this autumn in the form of vertical stripes and wild geometric patterns.
A tailored edge Trousers are bang on trend this autumn, and are fashionable in every shape, size and colour imaginable. Think cropped flares, wide leg palazzo pants, patterned culottes and high waist wrap belt trousers and you’re set for the season.

ALLOTMENTS
Hall Meadow Allotments Daphne Ledward, first woman panellist on Gardeners Question Time, celebrates ten years of the DSJ Allotments. It came as a shock to realise that it is actually ten years ago that I opened Hall Meadow Allotments. My recollection of the opening was that it was bitterly cold and anyone brave enough to take one on could be sick of ‘Growing Your Own’ very rapidly, as the soil was nothing like the silt I am lucky enough to have at home, where you can dig down a metre and still pull up something that would instantly support plant life, and a cricket bat could take root if you left it lying about in the garden. A decade on, what a transformation, but not without a great deal of hard work and dedication, when I visited again earlier this summer to judge the Best Kept Allotments. Beautiful, fertile earth, thanks to hard work, diligent composting, regular leaf collection and farm manure when it is available. A feast of healthy crops (thanks to barrier protection) and a fascinating variety of layouts, it is evident that to the holders 18
this is not a necessity but a pleasure to have an abundance of fruit and vegetables, with the satisfaction that they are all home-grown. Not just that, but good friendships have also grown and flourished amongst the potatoes and pears, methinks. It was a difficult job to pick out the winners, so much so that I suggested that there should be at least one runner up in each category as there was little to choose between the best. Perhaps the only disappointment was that a very tiny minority of allotment holders have not grasped that not weeding makes life not only harder for themselves, but their neighbours, as seeds blowing about quickly turn into rampant weeds in well cultivated earth. You all know the saying, ‘One year’s seeding, seven years’ weeding’… That aside, Hall Meadow Allotments are a credit to Deeping. May their second decade be as successful as the first.

It’s Pumpkin Time!
PUMPKIN
Carve a pumpkin, label it and bring it to Swines Meadow - all pumpkins can be viewed on Saturday 31st October. Did you know that Europe’s largest pumpkin grower is in Spalding? So to draw attention to this often neglected but much loved (by us) corner of South Lincolnshire we have launched the Deepings Pumpkin Carving Competiton!
Room, a panel of judges have been lined up and there will be prizes for the children’s categories. Judging will take place between 12.30 and 1.30 and pumpkins can be viewed until 3.00 pm when they can be collected.
Open to all from pre-schoolers whose parents or teachers can interpret their doodles to businesses and local care homes. We have trawled the internet and can see that there is no shortage of ideas or downloadable templates - so even the least artistic of us can have a go!
Entries are 50p each and all proceeds will go to Zack Mission. Set up in honour of Alana Exton’s son to help raise awareness and funds for asthma UK . Alana says “asthma is a very underestimated condition, a lot of people really don’t understand the seriousness of it. 3 people a day loose their life due to a asthma attack ... Since starting the campaign we have raised nearly £12000 with the help and support of everyone.”
See the ad on the opposite page for details but don’t forget to label your pumpkin with name, category and contact details and deliver to the Swines Meadow Farm Nursery, top of Linchfield Road, from Thursday 29th (open 9-4) - Saturday 31st noon latest. Seasonal refreshments will be available at Deeping Fudge Tea
So this year when you carve your pumpkin and drop it in, you can also be assured that you are helping a cause at the heart of Deeping.

favourite dog walks
DOG WALKS
Low Locks, Deeping St James Wells-next-the Sea to Holkham (circular walk) The walk starts at the Wells-Next-The-Sea beach pay and display car park (NR23 1DR). In the car park there is also a dog friendly café for very good refreshments, a self service dog wash and fresh water for thirsty and dirty dogs is also supplied. This walk blows the cobwebs away, if your dog is of a sociable nature he will be sure to make lots of friends as this is a very popular dog walking beach. The circular route allows both a beach and woodland walk. Dogs can be let off lead but keep an eye open for horses being exercised along the beach. The walk is approximately 4 miles if you take the circular route.
Ferry Meadows There are many alternatives to this walk so you can make it as long or as short as necessary. The park is very well maintained by Nene Park Trust and there are dog bins located all around the park. Dogs are allowed off lead but you will need to be aware of livestock grazing, wildlife/fowl and horses being ridden through the park. Two large pay on entry car parks are located within Ferry Meadows (PE2 5UU), this is currently £3 but at certain times of the year parking is free. Two cafés are located within Ferry Meadows, one of which is the recently opened Lakeside Café with a large veranda where you can sit with your dogs and look over the lake.
We love this walk because it provides lots of opportunities to see local wildlife and it’s on our doorstep. The local council provide bins at either end of the walk, so there is no excuse for dog walkers not picking up after their dogs. The walk is approximately 3 miles. There are two narrow bridges to get across Scout Island to the other side of the river. You can turn left after the second bridge for a walk along the river and back (or keep walking to Nine Bridges by following the footpath) or you can turn right and go all the way to Black Gate and then turn right to find the river again, cross the silver foot bridge and head back up Church Street and Eastgate for an on-lead road walk and pub stop. Please be aware of the narrow bridges at the start of the walk if you have a wheelchair, pushchair etc. Limited parking is available at Low Locks on Stowgate Road (PE6 8TZ) next to the telephone box just off Eastgate. The Waterton Arms on Church Street is dog friendly, has a great beer garden and also does good home made food. Alternatively there is the Old Bakery further along Church Street where you can buy filled rolls, cakes etc. 23
DOG WALKS Nine Bridges, Northborough This is a nice easy walk with lots of opportunity for wildlife spotting. In addition the river is usually quite shallow so it’s great for any doggy paddlers out there. The walk is approximately 2 miles but can be extended by walking along the other banks to continue exploring the rivers. This walk can lead you back to Low Locks if you cross the main road at the end and follow the footpath signs, turning left before you get to the railway line. Car parking is available on the Northborough end of Mile Drove. Although there is nowhere to stop for refreshments on this walk you could drive back to The Waterton Arms on Church Street DSJ for post walk refreshments.
Dole Woods, Thurbly This walk is especially pretty during the springtime when the bluebells are flowering. There is work currently taking place, planting new trees and exposing the old railway line, making it a great place to have a wander through the meadow as well as the woods. Keep your eye out for the red kites as these are an awesome site from the top of the hill. There are no dog bins provided on this walk, so please take it home with you. The walk is approximately 2 miles. On the road parking is available on Obthorpe Lane, Thurlby. There are no amenities at this location.
First Class Dog Training’s private field Exton The views on this walk are amazing and there are many historical sites such as Fort Henry, a late 18th century ornamental folly. There are plenty of opportunities for dogs to run off lead but be aware, some parts do have sheep and horses, so be responsible dog owners and clip your dog back on their lead at these points. The walk is approximately 6.5 miles. Roadside parking available on The Green near the Fox and Hounds pub (LE15 8AP). Food is available at the pub and dogs are welcome in the beer garden. Head out of the village by foot the way you came in, cross over the bridge and there is a footpath on the left to start the walk. 24
The Old Pig Field, Towngate East, Deeping St James, PE6 8LQ. Ideal for dogs who need a bit of space or who need to work on their recall is the First Class Dog Training field which is available to book for £10 per hour for a maximum of four dogs (from the same household). The enclosed space is approximately 1 acre and it is fenced to five and a half foot all the way round. Parking is available in the field and at Swines Meadow Farm Nursery, which is directly opposite the training field. Refreshments are available from Deeping Fudge Tea Rooms at the Nursery. There are dog bins provided, so please pick up after your dog. To book please contact First Class Dog Training on 07709 319612

GHOST STORY
The Deeping Ghost The first time that the ghost walks took place in Deeping St James, Paul and I walked through the churchyard to put candles at appropriate places along Church Walk. As we walked back a mist had fallen and it swirled around us, making the atmosphere dank and lonely. Muffled sounds could be heard in the distance. In an hour there would be an expectant crowd, an eagle owl would perch on the back of a gravestone, and Clive the baker would suddenly materialise from the church, holding an umbrella and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, resplendent in a long black cape which flowed behind him. Seventy years before, three teenage girls had got themselves ready in their best summer frocks and walked together, laughing and chatting, from their homes in Eastgate to the pictures at the old Empire in Market Deeping. Their names were Mitzi, Mary and Nancy. They little thought that this would be a night that they would remember for the rest of their lives. They paid one shilling and thru’pence for their tickets and then enjoyed a full programme: advertising trailers of forthcoming attractions, a feature film and PathÊ Gazette news items. When they left the cinema it was dark but moonlit and so they strolled along the familiar way home, chattering about the film, the film stars and all things that girls of 18 are interested in. continued >
27
GHOST STORY They came to High Locks and passed the bridge, and when they reached the clapper gate by the Manor they decided to take a shortcut down Church Walk instead of going down the street. It was bit eerie beneath the tall trees of the Manor garden; everything looked different in the darkness as they passed Mr Quartermaine’s allotment and the little gate into the park. Walking by the cemetery they could see someone coming towards them; as he got nearer they were surprised to notice that he was wearing a wide-brimmed black hat and a long flowing black cloak, and although it was not raining he had his umbrella up. Strangely enough they were not afraid, though it seemed very peculiar, as they neither heard nor felt any movement of the long cloak as he passed. When he got by they all turned to have a better look at the odd stranger but there was nothing to see - the person had vanished into thin air! The girls all saw the same thing and none of them were scared, although they knew they had seen something extraordinary, supernatural, in fact. The story was recounted dozens of times over the years. No one ever disbelieved it nor did anyone claim to have seen the dark spectre or to have had any similar sighting. Many years later Joy Baxter while researching through old papers came across the story of a black ghost that had been seen in 1898. The 28th April issue of the Peterborough Express had a headline:
A Deeping Ghost Mysterious movements of an ‘object in black’ Some amount of excitement has been created in Deeping St James by the report that a ghost has been seen in the main street in the vicinity of the churchyard ... it has also transpired that about a year ago a strange object covered in black was seen by two or three persons early in the morning on two on three occasions. At that time it was described as being of medium height but its exact form could hardly be determined as the witness kept at a respectable distance. The object glided along by a wall and disappeared through some boarden gates. Newspaper reports of sightings of the apparition came through thick and fast and soon the story was reported as far afield as in the Birmingham Mail. Back on that summer’s evening in 1936 when the three girls arrived home breathless from running and full of their adventure, Charlie Swift, Nancy’s father, a native of Deeping St James looked up from his paper and said, ‘Why, you have seen the Reverend John George; he looked just like that and he would take a walk up the church path every night.’ The Reverend John George died on 31st January 1898, three months before the first report of the Black Ghost in the Peterborough Express. 28

My Generation Local photographer Lydia Pinfold embarks on a career as a documentary photographer and as she does so captures the images of others in her generation.
“Young adults can become vulnerable as they study for what they want to become or start to work towards their dream career.” Wondering what to do or be and what challenges are out there is a topic that fascinated 20 year old Lydia as she completed a Foundation Degree in Creative and Editorial Photography. She recognised that it can be a lonely time as individuals take on more responsibilities and start to make important life decisions. Reality can hit hard as goals are pushed away and diversions into completely different paths are commonplace. In many cases only a few can reach out and grab their dreams with both hands working hard towards living a life that they are passionate about and being able to say to the world ‘I made it and this is what I can do.’ It is this moment in a lifetime that Lydia has sought to capture in this series of photographs of her generation. continued >

FIVE GREAT...
Five great places for
Sunday
Lunch The Waggon & Horses, Langtoft Landlord, and Chef, Richard and his family have certainly done all they can to make this convenient little pub warm and welcoming in the last few months since their arrival. Quite a number of locals gathering at the bar added atmosphere on our visit and the staff were at pains to ensure that our meal was as good as it can be. At the bar there are real ales with Abbot Ales a popular choice. Families are well catered for with high chairs available and an enclosed garden. Keen that children should be able to share the same dishes as their parents, child’s portions are available but so are the more conventional children’s dishes, though here the chicken nuggets are made by Chef! With generous portions, delicious veg and red cabbage it is no wonder that the pub is being rediscovered. Key Lime Pie is a favourite dessert with many but Chef likes to ring the changes and the Pecan Pie came in for a special mention by our party and the fact that cream is served in a jug for selective pouring! Booking is advisable call 343200
The Red Lion, West Deeping Characterful with beams, an inglenook and low windows looking out onto the street, Gino, Vikki and Marie have worked hard to create a gastro pub with interesting dishes and great customer care. As well as a selection of roasts topped with a delightful overblown yorkshire pud, vegetables are served separately. Homemade horseradish sauce and apple sauce accompany the beef and pork respectively with children’s portions available for just £5.95. As well as the traditional Sunday lunch there is an impressive specials board and the dandelion and burdock braised ham is truly mouthwatering. The desserts are served with panache and include the highly recommended chocolate orange fondant, the blueberry sorbet was decorated with a kumquat in some style but the honeycombe parfait is simply in a class all of it’s own. Ales include a selection from local micro brewers, Hopshackle and Star. A special Sunday lunch but not with an exceptional price tag. To book 01778 347190. 36
The Bull, Market Deeping For the best retro Sunday lunch in town there is nowhere to beat The Bull. Delicious prawn cocktail served with ice crisp salad is my treat followed by a choice of two different roast meats and all the trimmings. Plates piled high and always tender this is the kind of roast that keeps you going til Tuesday. For dessert custard is served with apple pie and crumbles but there is nothing to beat the piece de resistance, the banana split. A feast for the eye as well as the stomach this is a banana split as it was meant to be, with ice cream, cream and sprinkles. It can’t help but make you feel special. All served in the quiet of the Woodhouse Room behind the bar with pictures of old Deeping on the walls and served with a friendly smile by Vonney and Eileen. Booking essential call 343320
At Vine House Farm Shop we offer a wide range of organic, home grown vegetables and home made baked goods. We also specialise in an extensive range of wild bird food - much of which is produced here on the farm. Pumpkins will be available for Halloween!
Golden Pheasant, Etton. Our family Sunday lunch in this beautiful Georgian building was a very pleasant experience. Décor was stylish, the welcome warm, and a good range of real ales was on offer, including Woodforde’s Wherry, a personal favourite. The youngest member of our party was provided with a comfortable, sturdy highchair. Menu choices looked inviting – roasts, as you would expect, but with other options – and the home-made chicken and gammon pie chosen by one member of our party was pronounced delicious. Locally-sourced roast lamb was also excellent with generous portions, crispy potatoes and some of the best Yorkshire puddings we have eaten. The children’s menu, too, was interesting - not just the usual “bangers”. For afters, the sticky toffee pudding was light and tasty and the peach tart pleasant, if a bit too sweet for personal taste. We will definitely return, hopefully when the weather allows us to take advantage of the pretty garden and children’s playground. 30th August 2015 Mel, Phil, Will, Anna and Fergus Savage 01733 252387

The Waterton Arms, Deeping St James A genuine ‘local’, always busy, especially at weekends, in a lovely old building with a large garden and play area, no gimmicks but offering excellent food, beers and wines. The menu is imaginative, the cooking is skilled and delicious and the presentation faultless. Although a meal at The Waterton isn’t a cheap option, it is certainly very good value and makes a wonderful treat. The Waterton is very popular for Sunday meals, offering an different take on the traditional choices of meats, with good and original vegetarian and fish options and delectable desserts, including cheeses. When Liz and Brian Waterland ate at the Waterton in September service was friendly and attentive; the wine list not over priced but full of good things; all in all, a lovely meal. There is no doubt about it; this pub has an excellent chef. Highly recommended for its warm welcome and villagey atmosphere; a real Deeping St James quality pub. To book call 342219
