FAMILY FUN DAY OUT ENTERTAINMENT ON AND OFF THE RIVER As usual the High Street will be filled with stalls and attractions to keep you and your family entertained. This year we have even more attractions near the roundabout at the Boundary and on the carpark behind the Library.

TAYLOR’S FUN FAIR Long time supporters and sponsors of the Raft Race the Taylor family will again be there to entertain children and adults with their popular Fun Fair which has been extended along the High Street and on the car park behind the Library in support of the Community Centre. Helping us raise significant funds for our nominated charities.

OLD AND NEW Last year’s popular Red Double Decker bus will be coming back and this year is joined by another converted Ford truck that will be on Bridge Street. We have plenty of Deepings Raft Race wristbands so that you can show your support of the event. They are available in Adult and Children sizes. We are also going to try to get a selection of spectators on the Stone Bridge to vote for the Best Dressed Raft and enter ongoing results on our website so that you can keep updated via your smartphone.

RAFT RACE THEME This year we are expecting everyone to go all out and participate in our theme which is ‘The Raft Race Goes To The Movies’. Not only do we want to see the rafters dressed up but we want the spectators to come appropriately dressed as their favourite film character.

LIVE RACE TIMES ON THE DAY We will be letting people know rafter’s race times as they happen through your Smart Phone or iPad. Just visit www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk on your mobile phone or iPad.

Water pistols will be available on the day to add to the fun, but no missiles or eggs please

What’s On It’s back! Following the huge success of last year’s event and in particular the Routemaster Bus Bar, we’ve brought it back again this year for our themed ‘Raft Race Goes to the Movies’. Now, some of you may not remember the movie ‘Summer Holiday’ but those who do will remember the iconic London Bus in the film. We’re not saying of course that this one is the actual bus used in the production but there is a bonus - this one sells beer and soft drinks.! Get your Movie Theme gear on – anything from old to new, from ‘Summer Holiday’ to ‘X-Men’, ‘War Craft’, ‘Jungle Book’ or whatever you would like to emulate, then join in the Fancy Dress Parade at 3.45pm from The Antiques Centre, led by our Marching Band from the Air Training Corps and the Harmony Majorettes. AND it just keeps getting better – we’ve also got this Vintage Classic and guess what – they sell beer and soft drinks! It will be in Deeping St James throughout the morning and after lunch you can find it opposite the Antiques Centre in Market Deeping where there will be a bigger fun fair, more stalls and a great atmosphere. On your way to the town centre don’t forget to pop into the Community Centre where there is a free Bouncy Castle, teas, coffees and cakes and a bumper car ride in the Community Centre car park. Our event is completely free to visit and any funds we raise go to our selected charities. It’s about the only time you’ll get to go to the movies for free!

THIS YEAR WE ARE FUNDRAISING FOR TWO LOCAL CHARITIES ‘Brody & Friends’ “This is Brody and he is 7 years old. He is one of 28 children in the UK who have a rare condition caused by an extra X Chromosome which has many side effects. Worldwide there are only 250 children with the same condition. There is no cure but there is hope and love to help Brody and his family deal with day to day living. For Brody and many of his 27 friends the daily routine of seizures (fitting), recurrent chest infections and the risk of choking are real and start some days at 4am. Once awake he rarely sleeps again until evening. Brody has ‘global development delay’, which means that he can’t currently walk or talk and to prevent choking he has to be fed through an externally fitted ‘peg’ tube. He communicates through hand signals but unless you know him they are hard to interpret. Brody & friends are supported in the UK by their own Charity, MECP2 Duplication UK (www. mecp2duplicationuk.org.uk ) which is one of the Raft Race’s chosen charities this year. If Brody is well

enough he may be at MECP2’s charity stall at the Raft Race, next to our information stand outside the Antiques Centre. Please visit the stand and see Brody’s 27 other friends and pick up some information. But most of all please help Brody & Friends to reach their target of raising enough funds for respite care in a professionally converted static caravan which will be sited at a coastal location. He needs a break as they all do and so do his carers.”

The Deepings Community Centre (DCC) Our second nominated charity for 2016 is run entirely by volunteers and has charitable status. There are many facilities within the Centre including: • A hall and rooms for meetings, social events, etc. with all facilities including wifi • Kitchen facilities • 5 in house Clinics • A comprehensive Information Centre • A well appointed garden New groups are welcome, for details or for website listings and program of regular events, contact the centre on: 01778 381770 or enquiries@ deepingscommunitycentre.org.uk

Things you need to know about Raft Race day THE THEME This year’s them is ‘The Raft Race Goes To The Movies’ so come dressed as your favourite Film Character. There is a trophy for the Best Dressed Raft and there will be prizes for the best dressed spectator. ASSEMBLY POINT On the Sunday morning (7th August) rafters will be parading their rafts from The Waterton Arms along Bridge Street to the start area near the metal foot bridge. Prior to the rafts going down the river we are planning to interview the rafters over the loud speakers so that the spectators can get to know the teams and we can set off teams that want to compete against each other. Rafts will be going into the river near the start line at the metal foot bridge which means spectators in this area will get to see all the fun of when the rafts first enter the water and if they actually float! Mini Raft Race – We are hoping to see more children bring along their own mini rafts and aim to set these off about 11am.

Garford are pleased to be sponsoring The Deepings Raft Race 2016 raising funds for the Deepings Community Centre and Brodie & friends (MECP2 Duplication UK)

A brief history of the Raft Race! When the landlords of the Crown & Anchor and the Walnut Tree had a wager in 1962 as to who was the fastest in the river - not on their usual craft of choice, a canoe, but on a raft, they could little have imagined that forty years later the race would attract over 100 rafts from all over the UK! Not only that but the race would become a weekend event which would also include bungee jumping, balloon flights and extravagant firework displays! After a slow but steady start, interest in the raft race waned in the early 1970’s but Barry Thorpe from the Thorne Club who met at the Rose in Frognall resurrected the race in 1981. From a small start with a few pubs joining in, it prospered with entries from Peterborough, Stamford and Bourne. By 1996 interest was beginning to dwindle and Richard Ash and Mike Shattock attempted to re-energise the event. Built around the slogan ‘Don’t forget to build your raft’ the race

was suddenly on the up. Friends and relations were recruited to the organising team and for the next 13 years the race grew in popularity and scope. Outside of the race there were events as well and the Deepings Raft Race Golden Jubilee Celebrations in June 2002 attracted over 1,000 people celebrated the night with the Swinging Blue Jeans in two huge marquees on the original Deeping Show Site. After a brief interlude when the Rotary Club of the Deepings stepped in to keep the show alive, Rotarian, Kevin Barber took it on with a newly formed Committee. Bridge Street, Deeping St James is again at the heart of activities with stalls and a fun fair in the Market Place and still thousands of visitors come to the event on the first Sunday in August to take part in or to watch the event.
