ashion and interior design are fundamentally linked. There's a generally held assumption that people graduate from an interest in dressing themselves to an interest in dressing their homes – and also that interior designers are influenced by trends that emerge on catwalks. Fashion designers increasingly bring out home collections – cushions, say, and candles – or even upholstery and entire design schemes. Think Missoni Home, Armani Casa or last year's newcomer, Gucci Decor. It's less common the other way round of course. David Linley has no fashion line, and neither does Tom Dixon. But that's not to say that the inspiration can't flow both ways. In this issue we look at Swiss fashion house Akris' new collection, which is entirely inspired by American designer Alexander Girard, perhaps best known for his playful wooden dolls. It's a colourful, graphic array of dresses in floaty fabrics and bold shapes, all in response to the Vitra Design Museum's current touring exhibition. We admire it all in further detail in this issue, alongside our usual mix of the beautiful, the interesting and the unusual, which this month takes us from Essex to Brazil, looking at everything from ceramics to restaurant design via chairs, beds, radiators and even egg cups. We hope you enjoy it.

THROW DOWN Ceramic Art London returns to King’s Cross with a dynamic display from over 90 of the world's best contemporary creators Words H E L E N B R OW N

ith packed courses, record sales and prime time TV programmes centred around the stuff, it seems we are a nation potty for ceramics. As one of the most ancient industries on the planet, ceramic artistry boasts an impressive history. From the moment humans discovered clay could be dug up from the ground and fashioned into the ancient urns of antiquity to today’s commonplace cereal bowl, the technology and techniques in the art have undoubtedly changed but the basics remain the same. Returning to its home in King’s Cross for a 15th edition, Ceramic Art London is the leading showcase for contemporary ceramic art and one of the most dynamic displays from the best in the business across the globe. This year’s fair takes place from 23-35 March at Central Saint Martins, home to over 100 years of ceramic art teaching. Guests can expect 91 of the world’s most distinguished ceramic artists and a varied selection of exciting and ambitious work. For those already in the know, this is an opportunity to explore further and buy directly from the creator. For

With pieces starting at just £15, the event offers collectors of all budgets the chance to take something away with them. A quarter of the exhibiting makers are from overseas this year, with a third of them travelling from Korea. Reflecting the selectors’ desire to showcase CAL favourites whilst introducing new faces, this year’s fair features twenty first-time exhibitors, including well established potters Henry Pim with his intricately engineered architectural structures, and Monika Debus, whose symbol laden pieces are the product of a practice that focuses on

painting, calligraphy, experiment and chance. Rising star newcomers include Marike Jacobs with her multi-textured cups and pitchers and Hilary Mayo whose graceful, paint drip-effect creations subtly satirise the making process. Ceramic Art London is renowned for traversing the boundary between functionality and fine art as demonstrated by Alison Gautrey’s shell-like tilting bowls, Ashraf Hanna’s undulating modernist lines and Barry Stedman’s colour- splashed wares that bring to mind abstract painting. The fair pops with colour this spring with Grainne Watts’ blooming polkadot vessels in shades of crimson and cobalt and Lara Scobie’s vases vividly detailed in red, orange and yellow. Sophie Cook’s impossibly elegant bottles return in luminous hues of lemon and lime, while Roger Coll’s idiosyncratic, twisting forms are rendered

Elsewhere, Home from Home celebrates international ceramicists who have made the UK their home while a number of talks will focus on how Stoke- on-Trent is reclaiming its mantle as a global centre for ceramics manufacturing and education. Also this year, and in a first for Ceramic Art London, CSM students will host a ceramic studio where they will make new work in front of a live audience. As well as gaining insight into all stages of the making process, visitors will be offered the opportunity to comment on the direction the work should take as it is being made. PINK A look at David Shrigley’s characteristically deadpan new works for Sketch Words E V E H E R B E R T

avid Shrigley has transformed the iconic Gallery at Sketch for the second time with a fresh new exhibition, part of a long-term programme of artistled features at the venue. Replacing the 239 black and white drawings that have adorned the walls since 2014 are 91 colourful new works. The millennial pink gallery created by architect and designer India Mahdavi has garnered global attention since its inception, with Shrigley’s drawings setting a witty narrative in what has become one of the most instagrammed spaces in the world. Shrigley is celebrated internationally for his distinctive drawing style and works imbued with dry humour, which cut to the point of human nature with their satirical comments on everyday situations and human interactions. Recurring themes pervade his storytelling, capturing child-like views of the world, the perspective of aliens and monsters or the compulsive habits of an eavesdropper shouting out loud. The new work continues to offer a side order of humour for diners, with oblique news headlines to digest along with their afternoon tea or dinner. T BEAUTY LINES OF HOME takes a look at the V&A’s major new exhibition, Ocean Liners: Speed & Style

he V&A re-imagines the golden age of ocean travel with the major new exhibition, Ocean Liners: Speed & Style. Co-organised by the V&A in London and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, it is the first ever exhibition to explore the design and cultural impact of the ocean liner on an international scale. It will explore all aspects of ship design from groundbreaking engineering, architecture and interiors to the fashion and lifestyle aboard. Ocean Liners: Speed & Style showcases over 250 objects, including paintings, sculpture, and ship models, alongside objects from shipyards, wall panels, furniture, fashion, textiles, photographs, posters and film. It will display objects never-before-seen in Europe, and reunite objects not seen together since on board these spectacular vessels, which revolutionised ocean travel from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century. Highlights include a precious Cartier tiara recovered from the sinking Lusitania in 1915, as well as a panel fragment from the Titanic’s first class lounge, returning to the UK for the first time since its doomed maiden voyage in 1912. Others include a stunning interior panel from the Smoking Room of the French

liner, Normandie, created by leading Art Deco lacquer artist Jean Dunand, and Stanley Spencer’s painting ‘The Riveters’ from the 1941 series Shipbuilding on the Clyde. The Duke of Windsor’s sumptuous 1940s Goyard luggage will also feature, on display in Europe for the first time since leaving the Windsor Estate. As the largest machines of their age, ocean liners became powerful symbols of progress and 20th century modernity. The exhibition will also feature ground-breaking works by Modernist artists, designers and architects inspired by liners, including Le Corbusier, Albert Gleizes, Charles Demuth and Eileen Gray. Beginning with Brunel’s steamship, the Great Eastern of 1859, the exhibition will trace the design stories behind some of the world’s most luxurious liners, from the Beaux-Arts interiors of Kronprinz Wilhelm, Titanic and its sister ship, Olympic, to the floating Art Deco palaces of Queen Mary and Normandie, and the streamlined Modernism of SS United States and QE2. It will throw light on the famous passengers and the great couturiers who looked to ocean travel to promote their designs. On display will be the Christian Dior suit worn by Marlene Dietrich as she arrived in New York aboard the Queen Mary in 1950, and a striking Lucien Lelong couture gown

worn for the maiden voyage of Normandie in 1935. The exhibition will also showcase one of the most important flapper dresses in the V&A’s collection – Jeanne Lanvin’s ‘Salambo’ dress – a version of which was displayed at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. Ghislaine Wood, exhibition curator, said: “The great age of ocean liners has long passed but no form of transport has been so romantic or so remarkable. Three years in the making, this exhibition will show how liners have shaped the modern world in many ways.” Ocean Liners: Speed & Style reveals the largely forgotten history of leading artists and designers who contributed to their design, such as William De Morgan, Richard Riemerschmid, Jean Dunand, Edward Bawden and Edward Ardizzone. It also highlights the political shifts and the international rivalry that developed over 100 years, as liners became floating showcases of national ingenuity.

ften heralded as the kitchen industry’s driving force and trendsetter, the bulthaup showroom on Wigmore Street is undergoing a facelift. Celebrating 30 years of existence as a pioneering brand that has adapted accordingly in the face of massive changes to the kitchen dynamic – years that have seen the development of the trusty workbench, kitchens that encourage communication, and more efficient storage methods – the Bavarian born company is overhauling and restoring its famous showroom; due to reopen this month. The new showroom will display all of the latest and most innovative of the bulthaup creations – as well as offering a bespoke service that fits the kitchen to the client. In short, it is the opportunity for bulthaup to show that the kitchen is the hub of the home: a place that needs to have practicality, functionality and community. The building itself is steeped in history – predating by years the brand that has made it its name. The Grade II-listed building was originally a part of the Debenham & Freebody department store, buried amongst the pharmacies and suppliers for the nearby Harley Street. After its transformation into the bulthaup showroom in 1988, Alex Wrighton, the Managing Director who chose the site for its central location and striking façade, made the first step in their pioneering approach by placing the manufacturer’s brand name above the door; a first for any retail kitchen furniture showroom. And it didn’t stop there. Before long, plenty more kitchen and furniture stores had sprung up around it – making Wigmore Street the showroom destination that it is today. The new showroom, which has been designed in-house by both the German and UK team, will showcase the four furniture systems that have facilitated the brand’s rise to fame. This will include the most recent, b Solitaire, which includes a wide range of tables, benches and freestanding storage elements, all of which can be placed throughout the living area. The success and adaptability of bulthaup is shown in its longevity. mélie du Passage founded design brand Petite Friture in 2009 with the aim of asserting a distinct style and bringing with her an emerging French and European design scene. After its first five years, Petite Friture succeeded in disseminating its style and putting its name to products through more than forty collaborations, including the well-known Vertigo light, designed by Constance Guisset, which became a remarkable success. Recent collaborations include the Jetlag wallpaper by French illustrator, Lisa Laubreaux, the Dojo collection by AC/AL Studio and Max Enrich’s Thin coffee table; all of which were launched at 2018's Maison&Objet. Fran Hickman founded her design studio in January 2014. Working with architectural partners and contractors across a wide variety of residential and commercial interiors, as well as on custom products and

furniture, Fran’s work is recognised for its bespoke, highly tailored approach. She draws on an extensive art and design vocabulary to create environments that are both elegant and engaging. Before establishing her own studio, Fran worked on interiors across the Soho House Group as well as for Waldo Works, where clients included Selfridges Personal Shopping, Smythson on Bond Street and Temperley. She has worked on residential projects all over Europe and in the United States. Jessica Mason launched Piglet in January 2017 having worked for six years in PR and marketing in London and Dubai. During that time she represented a whole host of brands - from Aesop and Ray-Ban to Christian Louboutin - which helped to shape her idea of the kind of company she’s building. Jessica believes this is a really exciting time for e-commerce with more and more ways emerging to connect directly with customers in a meaningful and personal way. Prior to establishing pulpo, Ursula worked in marketing for various companies in Germany, London, and Basel. Ursula has a keen interest in contemporary art and together with Patrick, collects contemporary paintings, sculptures, and photographs from Frances Bacon and Cindy Sherman, to lesser known, younger and undiscovered artists. This mutual love for contemporary art inspired the celebration of colour, material, and texture which is at the heart of pulpo. Today, Ursula is in charge of all client management at pulpo.

Whether it is textile wardrobes, marbled mirrors or plates with real flowers, German designer Meike Harde’s pieces of furniture, lighting, and accessories combine constructive as well as intuitive elements, always with a subtle poetic character. “An ornament should also serve a purpose”, says the award-winning designer from Cologne, who deliberately questions and reinterprets common production techniques. Meike’s works have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Holon Design Museum in Tel Aviv, and are distributed through a number of internationally renowned design manufacturers. Meike Harde met pulpo at the beginning of her career, while she was exhibiting in various galleries. Patrick and Ursula from pulpo fell in love with her experimental and methodical approach with colours and materials. Today, pulpo have worked with Meike Harde to produce three different designs, including Miro, Miro on the wall and most recently, the Potpourri glassware collection - all demonstrating her deep and sensitive understanding of shapes, shades, and surfaces.

Cologne-based Meike Hardy deliberately questions and reinterprets common production techniques

Founded by the Essex girl Carolyn Clewer, and Parisienne Tiphaine de Lussy, Paris Essex is the result of years of collaboration between the two knitwear and textiles specialists, which began 26 years ago at the Royal College of Art. Paris Essex's Crazy Blankets represent a creative dialogue between Clewer and de Lussy; the two take it in turns to play with crochet and knit, using mohair, wool and super-synthetics. Each blanket takes on its own personality as it grows organically and fluidly, with a process more akin to collage or patchwork than meticulously planned design. With names such as Heebie Jeebie, Zig Zag Bunny and Miss Harlow, each blanket tells its own story, mixing in patterns, shapes and characters. Defne Koz is co-founder and partner of Koz Susani Design, an award winning, innovative studio based in Chicago where she designs iconic, emotionally engaging and award winning products and experiences. Her idea of design is influenced by her training in Ettore Sottsass’ studio, as well as her Turkish and Italian culture and her curiosity for different product types. BLOCK HOME admires Martha Sturdy’s vibrant collection of geometric resin furniture in primary colours

s a departure from the earth tones and warm metals that have come to define Martha Sturdy’s design, her bold new collection comprises entirely new work, all hand-poured at Martha Sturdy’s Studio in Vancouver, Canada. Prime is a study in simplicity. Taking geometric form for its building blocks: circles, cubes, cylinders and rectangles, the designs combine shape with the colour wheel’s most rudimentary reds, blues and yellows. The combination results in the designer’s assertion that strength is found in design’s core principles. “I wanted to show that colour doesn’t have to be complicated or distracting and that when combined with clean and confident forms, its boldness can be grounding” she said. “The collection itself functions like building blocks, one piece stands alone, but a room can be built piece by piece.” Martha Sturdy’s new body of work includes new tables and stools, cylindrical and cubical in form. Wall-mounted circular disks punctuate the presentation, while an eight foot resin art screen frames the booth. esigner Alexander Girard (1907-1993) is having a moment. A quarter of a century after his death, the Italian architect, furniture, textile and interior designer is the subject of a touring exhibition – and now an extensive fashion collection is dedicated to his aesthetic, transferring his signature bold colours and patterns onto clothes for the first time. ‘When you practise in all fields of design, each field benefits from your experience in the others. And all design is related, whether houses, gardens, furniture or women’s clothes,’ said Girard. One of the most influential textile artists and interior designers of the 20th century, Girard is associated with bright colours, quirky shapes and humorous details. He’s perhaps best known for his collection of painted wooden dolls, a staple of stylish mantelpieces all over the world, which are still handmade for Vitra and which he designed for himself in 1953. It’s a large family of animals and humans, all individually made and therefore unique, and these design icons are characterful and fun as well as stylish and iconic.

Together with his close friends Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Girard was a leading figure of post-war American design. The primary focus of his wide-ranging oeuvre was textile design; as head of the textile division at the Herman Miller Company, Girard created numerous fabric patterns and products reflecting his love of festive colours, motifs and textures. He favoured abstract and geometric forms in a predominantly cheerful palette of colours. He was also a passionate collector. On his extensive travels, he avidly accumulated textiles and objects from all over the world, which provided him with a rich source of inspiration and ideas. When he died, his wife Susan bequeathed holdings from this collection to the Vitra Design Museum along with the contents of Girard’s studio (hundreds of drawings, prototypes and textile samples). This creative estate formed the basis of the major retrospective, Alexander Girard. A Designer’s Universe that ran at the Vitra Design Museum in Germany recently and which is currently touring the world. This exhibition made a lasting impression on Albert Kriemler, creative director od Swiss fashion house Akris. He said: ‘I visited the Girard exhibition in the Vitra Design Museum three times because I was so excited about his creative genius. He saw things differently. He had a way of changing our view of the world.’ Akris’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection is a tribute to the designer. It features well-known prints such as the Double Heart reinterpreted in woven leather and a jacquard knit.

Kriemler also drew inspiration from a number of lesser known objects, designs and sketches from Alexander Girard’s oeuvre, providing a new perspective on the elegance and esprit of Girard’s creations. He adapted the designs in close collaboration with Alexander Girard’s descendants, his grandchildren Kori and Aleishall Girard, who jointly run the Girard Studio today. They said: “We were pleasantly surprised to see the selection of our grandfather’s works that Albert Kriemler chose for this collaboration. He found inspiration from many aspects of our grandfather’s career: wooden sculpture, architectural renderings, oil paintings and collage, to name a few. Seeing how Albert has interpreted these designs and adapted them for clothing is exciting for us, as we have always seen the potential for this work to translate very well to fashion. We feel that the final outcome is a beautiful and unique tribute to the work of our Alexander Girard.” The Vitra Design Museum exhibition ‘Alexander Girard. A Designer’s Universe’ is now touring internationally and continues at Hangaram Design Museum, Seoul, South Korea until 4 March 2018, reopening at the Berkeley Art Museum, USA, from 20 June until 9 September 2018.

he background story of Tulip started when I was a child. I remember seeing a tulip in my stepfather’s garden, a Fritillaria decorated with little gingham checks. It was covered in dew drops, and, if I had been told that a fairy had hand painted the checks overnight, I would have believed it. Back indoors on the same day I noticed a pair of elegant drawings of this same tulip. My stepfather explained that they were drawings for Derby porcelain plates. This was a seminal moment and probably the reason why I am a surface pattern designer today. Tulip hand-blocked velvet detail

I went to quite an academic grammar school and found myself alone on the A-Level art course with Miss Jeffries, my art teacher. This meant that I had the whole art room to myself. I took an old sheet and dyed it pistachio green, cut out some stencils from cartridge paper, and bought some fabric paints. Miss Jeffries helped me make a silk screen, and I printed my first textile not knowing that I would still be at it 39 years later: the design I printed was a Fritillaria tulip, but as the checks seemed too tricky to cut out of a stencil I just decorated the flower head with stripes instead. Twenty years later, on seeing the design that my mother by now had proudly framed, a friend of mine insisted on taking it to India to have some woodblocks cut of the design. She came back some months later with a few meters printed on cotton muslin. Last year, when visiting my studio, Matt Gomez of Turnell & Gigon spotted this length folded up in a corner, and was so inspired by it and its story, that he took the original blocks off to Thailand to print the design for commercial sale.

After three years of intensive development, Cylinda-line was launched in 1967. At that time the cylindrical characteristic profile was avant-garde. These products are highly functional while remaining affordable Madelaire were army pals who joined forces more than 50 years ago to start a trading company. They tried their hand at sports shoes and furniture, but their business did not really take off until they heard about a small factory in Fårevejle, Denmark, called Danish Stainless. Danish Stainless produced stainless steel tableware, which was very much in vogue in Denmark’s 1960s. Upon entering into an agreement with Danish Stainless, Stelton began marketing a stainless gravy boat that sold like hotcakes in Danish hardware stores and was also a hit outside of Denmark. In

the United States, Stelton products were the epitome of Danish Design and sold at ten times their Danish prices in high-end department stores and design boutiques. The next important collaboration with a designer was with Erik Magnussen who designed the iconic EM77 vacuum jug. The true DNA of Stelton comes from these wellknown products, which are highly functional while being affordable. his Victorian semi detached house had been covered with ivy for 30 years and internally it was a patchwork of DIY building works done by the previous owners. The project included demolishing the poorly-done ground floor extension, gutting and stripping the entire house, rebuilding the rear extension to make a large family area, adding two rooms to the loft level as the second floor and refurbishing the whole house including the exterior and the garden. With the help of Ampersand Architecture, the house was converted to a spacious four bedroom, two bathroom house with a large family area and a home office. The cool colour palettes were chosen to keep the mood (and the children) calm and serene, while robust and repairable natural materials were chosen to withstand busy family life.

HALLWAY

An entrance hallway sets the mood of the house. Having searched for wall coverings that represent the house’s low key yet elegant aesthetics, Yoko chose clay plaster for its tactile texture, calm appearance, easy maintenance and environmental credentials. It also gives a nod to her Japanese background, as clay plastering has long been used in traditional houses in Japan. The hexagon floor tiles are a contemporary take on traditional encaustic tiles and made of porcelain to withstand daily foot and buggy traffic. The joint between the hexagon tiles and the herringbone oak flooring of the open plan area was worked out on site between the designer and the contractor.

LOUNGE

The originally enclosed hallway was opened up and now leads to an open plan family area that accommodates a lounge, kitchen, dining and children’s play/homework zone. Different shades of blue and green accent the room including Moroccan hand glazed tile cladding on the chimney breast. The colours are inspired by Yoko’s Bitossi Rimini Blue pottery collection.

KITCHEN

When the family bought the house, the rear extension had to be demolished and rebuilt. A large rooflight was installed over the kitchen, flooding the room with natural light despite it being in the middle of the house. The kitchen doors, drawers and cover panels with brass recess were designed by Yoko to fit IKEA carcasses and crafted by her skilled joiner. A slab of Carrara marble was chosen for the splashback to glam up the kitchen and worktops are Silestone in a similar shade, chosen for its durability.

DINING/CHILDREN’S ZONE

The original rear extension was in poor condition and separated into three disctinct areas with the original exterior walls still in place. Yoko demolished it and turned it into one large open plan area with a dining and children’s zone at the back. Black Crittall-style steel doors were chosen to be features by themselves while adding rhythm and impact in framing the garden view. The exterior is brought inside by extending the original brick wall indoors. ‘I use natural materials wherever possible as I love how they age. The key to usisng natural materials in tough environment (aka young children) is to embrace their imperfections and choose the ones that are easy to repair,’ says Yoko.

HOME OFFICE

The front room was closed off to create a home office. Black is used as a common thread throughout the house while it is used here in a big expanse to a dramatic effect.

GARDEN

Previously, the garden was cluttered with overgrown bushes and trees and the previous owner’s DIY decking; it could only be accessed from a small side door. Consequently, it was never used. The full-height Crittall-style doors were installed to lead out to the walled garden and Yoko designed a built in bench. Now it is a perfect entertainment spot for her family and friends.

MASTER BEDROOM

With the knowledge that rooflights provide three times more light than the same area of vertical glazing, Yoko chose to have walls and floors painted in dark colours for a cocooning effect in this new loft room. Full height glazing screens off a section of the room to provide a walk-in shower area.

BOYS’ BEDROOM

A corner of this bedroom was previously cut out to create what was supposed to be an ensuite bathroom. Because of this, the room and the corridor were awkwardly shaped and the natural light was blocked. Yoko returned the room to its original rectangular shape and allowed the light to come through. The children’s rooms were designed around the concept of forest bathing – the Japanese practice of basically just being in the woods. She was hoping the forest mural and a tranquil colour palette would have a calming effect on her two boys but the effect is still to be proven. The floorboards are original Victorian pine sanded back and white oiled by the contractor of the project.

GIRL’S BEDROOM

Both children’s rooms’ chimney breasts were demolished to make the most of the space. The girl’s room follows a forest theme and the colour palette was taken from the vintage rug bought in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. Yoko’s work is often inspired by her travel and vintage rugs scattered throughout the house are some of her favourites. The pink is limited to paints so it can be easily repainted when her three year old daughter grows out of the colour.

FAMILY BATHROOM

The bathroom layout was designed to maximise its floor space while ensuring a full size bath tub and a walk-in shower to accommodate the needs of young children as well as older children. Black Morrocan Zellige tiles are used to add a warm authentic feel to this monochrome palette.

POWDER ROOM

The hexagon tiles of the hallway are repeated but vertically on the wall. The tiles were laid before plastering to achieve a flush surface. It requires meticulous attention to detail and coordination between designers and contractors to achieve this level of detail.

hile shooting at Babington House, I remembered my friend Pearl Lowe lived nearby so I called her up, meaning to go over for a cup of tea. Instead I learnt that she had recently moved, so with flowers in hand we arrived for a spontaneous shoot at her new home. Pearl retreated from the hectic London music scene about 12 years ago, to spend more time with her children and return to her first love, fashion design. She has created a full and committed life in the countryside running her textile and children’s fashion business from the home she shares with her musician husband and three children, with welcome visits from her eldest daughter, Daisy Lowe. Pearl and family moved into this new house - it has 11 bedrooms, just to give you some idea of the size of the project - only eight weeks before these photographs were taken. But then Pearl is a genius when it comes to interiors, and I’ve visited most of them. Just as she dresses in elegant, feminine, and totally individual floral frocks, her interiors reflect the way she is. There’s a definite Pearl palette, bolder and more subdued than mine, that veers

A dusky pink sofa draped with bohemian silky shawls and a floppy pillow with just the right degree of mush is a nice balance of boho and romance. Family photographs are displayed in an eclectic variety of frames, an interesting way to give photos some status. A quiet bunch of roses complements the embroidered shawls. A table for family time. Whenever possible, the family eat together in the evenings, and the children are much involved in setting the table and clearing dishes. The overthe-top crystal candelabra was a flea-market find. Bedecked with flowers, it lost its grandeur to whimsy.

For all the attraction of wonky floorboards, ancient plumbing, and making do, the one area Pearl insists on being totally functional is the kitchen. I used the worktop as a staging post for floral offerings. The units, which are bespoke, were made to Pearl’s specifications by deVOL Kitchens. There are some wonderful floral touches in this bathroom apart from the faded red hibiscus and scabious flowers in jam jars on the windowsill and bath rack. A quiet wow of a pink glass doorknob and floor tiles from Fired Earth add a restrained stylized touch. All eyes, of course, are drawn to the amazing crochet café curtain from Pearl’s own textile collection. The walls are painted in Green Ground by Farrow & Ball.

Added to the effortless faded elegance she brings to every interior and her make do, mend, and recycle ethos, she creates a fairytale ambiance that is subtly theatrical and never over-dramatic. Her design credentials began with sourcing and overdying lace curtain panels, which led inevitably to lace dresses and a successful high-street collaboration. Now, she’s turned her creativity toward homewares and her unique line of children’s clothing - a fantasy of Pierrots, trapeze artists, harlequins, bats, glitter, and magic wands. In her short tenure of the house, she’s stamped her personality on it. All eleven bedrooms have some kind of furnishing and her signature touches of love. Armoires and cupboards overflow with fabrics: napkins, lace, and floral eiderdowns, she’s not a crisp white duvet sort of girl. And little moments of floral décor show up over and over, in a non frou-frou way, a perfect match for my floral affair.

culture HOME’s verdict on kitchen gadgets: the slow cooker

nless your kitchen is an enormous glass box newly attached to the back of your house, space in it is probably at a premium. And even if you do have floor space in abundance and countertop inches to spare, there’s no reason to fill it all with things that don’t actually improve your life. But still, open the cupboards in even the most stylish kitchen and you might find a repository of mismatched Tupperware, unused utensils and endless gadgets with their inevitable attachments. So with any new purchase, the questions arises: will it become a life-saver or end up at the back of the unused cupboard? In my own busy family kitchen, lots of necessary electricals fight for countertop space. A kettle, a toaster, obviously. A nutribullet and an espresso machine (both used daily). A Sodastream (very slim, saves on San Pellegrino bottles), a bread machine (big but worth it for the freshly-baked smell in the morning). On a high shelf there’s a rarely-used citrus juicer; in a cupboard a hand mixer with attachments (I’d love a stand mixer but can’t justify the space). We used to have a juicer but ditched it (too complicated to clean) and never replaced the coffee grinder when it broke (apparently you can use the nutribullet but we just buy ground now). But I got to thinking about slow cookers. Imagine throwing a few ingredients at it in the morning and coming home to a warm curry. We could have soup and stews waiting for us every day. And pulled pork. But would we really use it? A straw poll of friends is divided – some use slow cookers every day for all the above reasons. Others are less keen. Just leave it in a casserole in the oven on low, they say. One person is actively sneery. ‘Slow cookers make everything taste like school dinners,’ he says.

“Will it become a life-saver or end up at the back of the cupboard?” The Fast-Slow Pro is not small. About the size of the bread machine in fact, and quite tall too. When it’s on the counter I can barely see inside it without getting a stool. The downside of having lots of promising-sounding functions is that the instruction manual is daunting, but the machine is self-explanatory with settings such as ‘soup’, ‘casserole’, ‘bolognese’ and ‘risotto’. We enjoy the novelty of coming home to chilli con carne after minimal effort in the morning and making soup without standing over a pot. There’s also no steam, so even if it’s on for six hours, the kitchen doesn’t fill with condensation. Pulled pork is a success and we cook a whole chicken in there too – but there are too many functions for us to try all of them. Our verdict? It’s undeniably a useful machine but by no means a compact one. We’re torn. It’s easy to operate, has reliable results and offers a convenient way of planning meals, so if my counter had space for it, I’d be sold. But I’m not sure that I’d use it every day. I can’t see how they’d make one with a much smaller footprint without sacrificing capacity, but if they could, I’d definitely go for that.

1 Fill the bottom of the vessel with a 1 1/2 inch layer of small rocks to collect the water drainage. 2 Clean the inside of the vessel to ensure there’s no residue that could harm the plant. 3 Add a layer of potting soil made for succulents. It should be deep enough for the plants to root to, so roughly 2 1/2 inches. 4 Remove the largest plant from its container and dust excess soil off the roots. You may want to trim the roots, so they aren’t too long. 5 Using a long-stemmed implement, make a whole in the soil for the roots and nestle the plant inside. Then part the soil down firmly to hold the plant in place. 6 Plan for approximately 1 plant per inch of container diameter. 7 Continue placing the smaller plants using this method, trying to keep them away from the edges. 8 Clean off any excess soil around the glass of the container and add a small amount of water.

iving Architecture’s A House for Essex is a daring and provocative collaboration between FAT Architecture and Grayson Perry. The house, situated in Wrabness close to the Essex coast, is an extraordinary work of architecture and art, which provides a setting for a number of specially commissioned works by Grayson Perry exploring the unique qualities of Essex. A House For Essex has been conceived as a landmark in the tradition of wayside and pilgrimage chapels. Like a pilgrimage chapel, the house is dedicated to a saint – in this case a secular one by the name of Julie Cope – and gives architectural expression to her life. The design relates to a number of influences including Stave churches, arts and crafts houses and English baroque architecture. Charles Holland of FAT Architecture has described the building as ”a radical statement about architecture and its capacity for narrative and communication. The design embraces decoration, ornament and symbolism in order to tell a rich and complex story. Formally, it is like a Russian doll, a series of archetypal house shapes that step up in scale as the building descends the hill”. The interior features a number of Grayson Perry’s handmade ceramic pots and tapestries depicting the fictional life of Julie, described

chapel. Charles Holland and I batted ideas back and forth until a bonkers yet dignified design emerged glistening. The resulting building is a total artwork, a fiction in which you can live, a digital age shrine and a homage to Charles’ and my home county. I hope the people who stay in the House for Essex find it playful yet monumental, cosy and maybe slightly disturbing. It is a three dimensional musing on religion, local history, feminism, happiness and death.” Charles Holland, FAT, said: “The house is a striking object in its setting, but one that also has formal resonance. It is like a richly encrusted and highly decorated barn, with a healthy dose of Essex bling thrown in. Ultimately, it is a built story with something of the qualities of a fairy tale and you come across it as an unlikely, somewhat fantastic surprise. Like Grayson, I was born and brought up in Essex so the house is both fiction and autobiography.” A House for Essex is available to rent on a short-term holiday basis, and can sleep up to four people in two bedrooms. Slots will be allocated by public ballot.

by the artist as an ‘Essex Everywoman’. Visitors to the house pass through a series of unfolding spaces before entering the chapel, concealed behind two ‘hidden’ doors. The chapel itself is organised around a striking decorative object – part medieval rood screen, part baroque façade – that frames a ceramic statue of Julie herself. Upstairs the two bedrooms – with views to east and west – have walk-through cupboards that lead to internal balconies overlooking the chapel space. The exterior, clad in more than 1900 green and white ceramic tiles, are cast from originals made by Perry, depicting Julie as mother and icon, along with symbols associated with her life. She appears again, on the roof in the manner of a giant weather vane in addition to a beautifully cast ceramic chimney pot, wheel sculpture and beacon. Grayson Perry said: “When Living Architecture offered me the opportunity to collaborate with FAT it was a golden chance to realise a long-held ambition to build a secular

BRAZIL This house on the coast outside Rio de Janeiro is a weekend retreat for an urban couple. Architects Fabio Basani and Tulio Xenofonte give us a tour Words FA B I O B A S A N I A N D T U L I O X E N O F O N T E

or this project, the client desired a house with a unique, original and contemporary concept. It should mix natural elements with metallic structure and a lot of glass for the total integration between the rooms as well as the houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interior and the exterior. He asked that the whole social part of the house should be on the same level, as close as possible to the beach, and that the master suite should be also at that level. He also had a special request: he would like the great room to face the entrance to the bay. In this way, all desires besides needs were met in

the project, and the house was formed exactly the way he dreamed of it. The house was totally designed from the beginning, including major topographic modifications on the ground. Everything was newly built along with the house. Actually, nature was the greatest inspiration. The shape of the plot and the use of local natural resources for finishings and decoration were also a great inspiration. The house was designed to be leaning over the sea, and the large infinity pool makes a connection between nature and architecture. The architectonic concept adopted allowed the external area in its entirety to integrate with the large living room, joining to the kitchen with its double height ceiling, and to the internal garden with the garden fish tank.

“ The client had a special request: he wanted the great room to face the bay” The volume and interconnection studies of all the blocks that make up the house, arranged by the two large plot levels, were the starting point of the project. Significant topographic movement was necessary on the site before the construction, and this unearthed a great quantity of stones that were totally utilized in the construction. The largest and most prominent were positioned in strategic points of the project, such as the division between living room and kitchen area, garden tank, external staircases, master suite bathroom and general landscaping. The other stones were worked on the construction site and turned into wall finishing. Hiring a local construction company was fundamental, since they were familiar with

the local rainfall regime and other factors that affected the large amount of external work required. In addition to the natural stones of the land found in the topographic movements, which were used as wall finishings, the other finishings were chosen with practical maintenance and clean and contemporary design in mind. All bedrooms have large format Spanish porcelain tiles and all the entertaining spaces, including the external area around the pool and sauna is in São Tomé stone. The pool is all in Hijau stone, from Indonesia, and its different shades of green mimic the landscape with Angra dos Reis sea. The owners purchased most of the furniture and objects on two trips to Italy and Morocco. We followed these acquisitions and developed an interior design concept based on integrating them with our designs and what we commissioned from decoration stores in Rio de Janeiro.

rtist Residence Oxfordshire is the latest offering from dynamic duo Justin and Charlotte Salisbury. With locations in Brighton, Cornwall and London, the brand is known for its innovative approach to design, with each hotel possessing a distinctive aesthetic. Their latest venture is no different. Named Most Romantic Hotel in The Sunday Times’ Top 100 British Hotels, it was originally a 16th century farmhouseturned-local pub, which has now been given a new lease of life. Situated in picturesque countryside, the venue offers an intimate five rooms alongside an award-winning restaurant, Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms. We are pleasantly surprised to find that the rustic charm of the building has been retained: think large open fireplaces, wooden-beamed ceiling, stone floors and plenty of low-lit corners to cosy up in. But in true Artist Residence style, there are plenty of contemporary-cool touches. Design-lovers will relish the neon light installations, velvet furnishings and eclectic wall art - the vibe is very much English country pub meets east London cool.

THE ROOMS

e’re staying in the Farmhouse Loft Double, which is located on the second floor, and is the second largest of the hotel’s rooms. Featuring a sizeable ensuite bathroom and luxurious super king bed, the space is light-filled and airy, helped along by the high gabled ceiling. We love the clever little interior touches - from the writing desk and love-worn leather armchairs to the artisanal textiles and upcycled side tables. Together they create a homely yet styleconscious environment. The wooden-floored bathroom is another highlight, with its delicious-smelling Bramley

LE DRUGSTORE

The design of Le Drugstore in Paris is a move away from Design Research Studio’s typical industrial cum contemporary look. The intimate layout has a touch of grandeur influenced by a traditional gentleman’s study that has embraced the sophistication of the 1960s advertising world. It is a testament to the versatility of Tom Dixon’s furniture that his signature banquettes fit naturally into the classy aesthetic, and his Wingback chairs add a touch of the contemporary to the otherwise classic scene.

PASTAIO

Always playing on contrast, Design Research Studio has combined this clinically minimalist main restaurant with an assaultive back wall mural – block colours and geometric designs to reflect the cuisine: pasta. The mural depicts spaghetti, ravioli and rigatoni lest you forget what you’re there for. Located in the heart of Soho, Pastaio plays up to a communal theme, with minimalist trestle tables and stools down the centre all illuminated by the low hanging lights. A red bench runs under the eye-catching mural, indicating Tom Dixon’s influence on the restaurant, and adding a further touch of colour. Better still, the open kitchen at the back means you can watch the creation your fresh pasta from start to finish.

HIMITSU

The moody lighting of the Himitsu cocktail lounge bar in Atlanta, USA is reflective of its somewhat secretive theme. As the first stateside restaurant for Design Research Studio, it’s based around the Prohibition movement - with a twist. Tom Dixon chairs dotted around the copper bar and industrial tables add a splash of colour and energy to the room, and blood red upholstery and high back armchairs combine with high ceilings. Immediately noticeable are the Tom Dixon pendants, which draw inspiration from distorted natural forms and molten metal to create a hallucinogenic and ethereal effect that spreads throughout the bar.

MONDRIAN

As Design Research Studio’s first hotel, Mondrian London at Sea Containers House doesn’t disappoint. True to its name, the hotel boasts the distinctive features of a 1920s transatlantic liner tinged with postmodernism. The nautical theme spreads throughout the hotel with a network of brass that creeps its way through each bedroom and culminates at the cocktail bar and restaurant at the top of the building. The classic aesthetic is complimented with plush Tom Dixon booths, and a distinguished yet minimal stainless steel bar with an eye-catching Yellow Submarine takes centre stage behind it.

BRONTE LONDON

As Design Research Studio’s first standalone restaurant since Eclectic in Paris, Bronte is certainly something to behold. Drawing inspiration from the history of its location – the Strand – its striking architectural features alone are enough to hold the attention. It combines the traditional colonnade terrace with the modern minimalist furniture characteristic of Tom Dixon’s designs, bathed in a natural light that streams in through the floor to ceiling windows. The restaurant is distinctively divided, with large defining features marking out each section – a green granite kitchen, pink breakfast bar, and pewter cocktail bar. And the food is a reflection of a marriage between traditional and contemporary, too, classic dishes with hints of pan Asian Fusion.

CRAFT

Immediately arresting, Craft London combines the industrial with the bright and bold. The glazed exterior provides a somewhat harsh faĂ§ade that is softened by the pink lettering stamped across the building. The same may be said of the interior, where the monotone of the steel features contrast with the bright colour scheme that subtly encompasses each of the primary colours. This is particularly apparent in the restaurant upstairs, where the stainless steel tables fan out around the prominent semi-circular centrepiece, with Tom Dixon banquettes and a bright Moroccan plaster providing relief.

THE MOVE

Last summer we made the move from London down to the south coast of Dorset. It was a huge change which involved selling/buying and relocating jobs so managing the timing of it all did make it super stressful.

MY STYLE

I am such a chameleon and my style changes with my mood. I guess it’s eclectic, alternative, fun and pattern focused. Nothing too matchy-matchy.

PATTERN AND TEXTURE

I love interiors, to a fairly unhealthy degree, and I’m completely obsessed with pattern and texture in rugs, cushions and prints.

NEUTRAL BASICS

Because I know how much I love to play with soft furnishings and switch up the feel of a room with cushions and prints, I keep the basics fairly neutral.

SHADES OF GREY I have a range of grey walls in my house from the very dark to the very light, I love how it allows a print to pop and is so easily adapted. That said I’m about to paint a green/blue half wall in my son’s bedroom, pretty daring for me but maybe it’s a start of something new.

CHILDREN'S ROOMS

Having children has made me more playful with interiors, quite often I will buy something for one of the children’s rooms then decide I like it too much and want it up in the living room.
