What has Leeds market got to do with a beautiful, independent ladies boutique in Hull? Well, it’s where Wat’s On all started...

Afarmer’s wife with three young children decided she didn’t have enough to do so, not only was she the proprietor of a launderette by day, she decided to party plan clothes in the evening. And, so, Joyce Clappison’s entrepreneurial career began.

Sourcing her stock from a gentleman on Leeds market, Joyce soon outgrew party planning and took on the lease of a small shop in Market Weighton, owned by Lady Manton of Houghton Hall whose maiden name was Watson – hence the name Wat’s On. It wasn’t long before Wat’s On itself outgrew the premises and, after a few years occupying premises in Swanland, Joyce moved Wat’s On to an old hardware shop on Willerby Road, Hull, where it remains to this day.

Joyce has never been one to let the grass grow under her feet though and, in her ninth decade on the planet, Wat’s On Boutique has recently celebrated being 50-yearsold and is still expanding, both in square footage and the number of designer brands stocked. Acquiring next door last year and after a full refurbishment, there are now five large rooms of beautiful womenswear, shoes, bags, headwear, and jewellery.

Whether you’re walking the dog or receiving a Damehood, Wat’s On Boutique has beautiful clothes in sizes 8–26 for every day and every occasion. A casual lunch with friends, being Mum of the Bride or Groom, or just a simple wardrobe refresh, they have two floors of di erent styles and colours for you to choose from. A relaxed, informal atmosphere awaits you to browse the rails.
