LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S August issue highlights

Film has played a huge role in my life. One of my earliest memories is going to the cinema with my brother – momentous in itself as we never got on as kids – to see Back to the Future, and from then on I was hooked. Before going off to study for my journalism degree, I worked at the local cinema to earn some cash during a year out. It was probably the most fun I have ever had 'working'. I got to see films the night before they were released, and try to convince would-be cinemagoers to see the latest arthouse movie over the blockbusters when I sat on box office. That cinema is still there, but it's all automated now at box office, which is a little sad as I always felt that interaction was important.

It's why, when the Chichester International Film Festival comes around, I am incredibly excited. Not only has this been a long-standing institution in the county, but they always get amazing people involved and some pretty thrilling exclusives too. It's cinema as it should be, so I encourage you all to make time to visit during this month. You are sure to make memories to cherish forever.

Struck Star

Worthing local and film critic Pamela Hutchinson on the thrill of the Chichester International Film Festival and her upcoming retrospective on film star Cate Blanchett

As a little girl growing up in the Wirral in North West England, Pamela Hutchinson was always drawn to old black and white films on the TV. But the freelance writer and film historian admits that cinema trips were not a regular occurrence.

“We just didn’t go to see films, but I do remember my very first cinema trip to see Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which was far too scary for me,” she smiles. “I grew up experiencing the inevitable childhood crush on Harrison Ford, so I wasn’t totally scarred for life. As a teenager I was a vivacious cinema goer – immersed in French movies, but a slow starter with film.”

Fast forward more than 30 years and Pamela is often called upon for her specialist knowledge on silent film and women in film. Last year she presented a retrospective on British actor Olivia Colman at the Chichester International Film Festival and returns this month with her illustrated talk on Australian Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett.

“In my opinion Cate Blanchett is one of the most fascinating film stars and her performances go above and beyond what her contemporaries are doing. During my talk I will dive into what makes her so compelling – she has the imperious qualities of the great, golden age film stars like Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis. Her roles are very complex, so it’ll be a fun dive into what makes her characters so enthralling and a great opportunity to watch some of her best performances,” explains

Pamela, who writes for titles including Sight and Sound, Empire, The Guardian and regularly appears on BBC radio.

Pamela’s retrospective will explore Blanchett’s roles in films such as The Talented Mr Ripley, Notes on a Scandal, Elizabeth, Blue Jasmine, Manifesto, Carol, Nightmare Alley and Tár

Pamela’s retrospective will explore Blanchett’s roles in films such as The Talented Mr Ripley, Notes on a Scandal, Elizabeth, and Tár. “I was bowled over by her performance of Lydia Tár, I want to ask her everything about how she created such a character. There is a sinister and terrifying aspect to some of her characters like abusive maestro Tár to seductive older women in Carol, much as they are glamorous and attractive. I love the fine line between beauty and horror.”

CULTURE • INTERVIEW

Pamela’s fascination and awe of this blend of melodrama and macabre led her to pen an in-depth study on the 1948 film The Red Shoes for the BFI Film Classics series, due to be released in October. “I am completely obsessed with The Red Shoes – every time I come back to it, I find something new, so beautiful and terrifying. My new book will examine the film’s use of technicolour, spectacle, music and, of course, dance.”

With her focus on the release of her upcoming book, Pamela, who lives close to Worthing beach, is very much looking forward to Chichester’s annual film extravaganza, which runs from 4-27 August. “I lived in London for many years, but since moving to West Sussex three years ago I have discovered that I am spoilt for choice when it comes to film. We forget how much is going on outside of the capital. We have wonderful cinemas in Chichester, and I love visiting the Connaught Cinema in Worthing and there’s plenty on in Brighton, as well as the Slindon Cinema

in Arundel, which shows 35mm film shows. Chichester International Film Festival is the real highlight of the year for me.” As for where you’ll find Pamela at this year’s festival, there is no surprise there. “People are still fascinated by silent film –those mysteries and experiments lured me in,” she says. “I love my silent films. I am excited that there’ll be silent films with live music at Chichester this year – I always get a thrill so that’s where you’ll find me.”

Ones to watch

Our pick of the best of the Chichester International Film Festival

The Chichester International Film Festival has grown over 30 years to become one of the most ambitious film festivals around. With over 130 screenings including exclusive premieres and previews from around the globe as well as open air events, silent films accompanied by live music and inspiring talks from special guests, there’s plenty to see, watch, and do.

PRIORY PARK OPEN AIR SCREENINGS

4–6 AUGUST

Cosy up with a picnic for a magical evening as Chichester’s beautiful Priory Park hosts the festival’s three open-air screenings against the backdrop of Chichester Cathedral and the historical Guildhall.

Other dedicated events programmed will include a retrospective and celebration of the 150th anniversary of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff plus a tribute to director Jean-Luc Godard, a pioneer of the 1960s French New Wave film movement.

A RETROSPECTIVE ON HUGH BONNEVILLE 20 AUGUST

Chichester International Film Festival has welcomed notable movie stars over the years from Ralph Fiennes to Kathleen Turner. This year is no exception as British actor and Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville attends the festival on 20 August for a Q&A session. It will showcase an array of his TV and film highlights. A screening of To Olivia, a British biographical drama in which he plays the role of Roald Dahl alongside Keeley Hawes, will accompany the retrospective.

Get to know…

Dr JESSAMY HIBBERD

A HOVE-BASED CHARTERED CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST, BESTSELLING AUTHOR AND SPEAKER

Q How did you come to live in Sussex?

A I live in Hove with my husband Jack, our son who is 12, and daughters who are 9 and 7. Jack went to university at Sussex so it was somewhere we always thought about moving to, but it came about by luck. I was pregnant with our third child and Jack got a job in Brighton. We looked around houses when I was heavily pregnant and moved when my youngest was five months. We didn’t know anyone, but it’s been the best move and exceeded all our expectations. There’s nowhere I’d rather live.

Q What are your favourite things about the county?

A I’m sure everyone says it, but I love the fact we can turn right and be on the beach or turn left and go to the South Downs, whilst having all the benefits of a city – art, music, great restaurants and shows. I enjoy being outdoors with the kids, or on my bike or running, and it’s so easy to do that here. Everything is so accessible and there’s a great sense of community. I also love that it’s such an accepting city – anyone can be who they want here without fear of judgement.

Q You’re one of the UK’s leading self-help experts, can you describe your journey to this point?

A I am passionate about making psychology accessible to everyone. When I was training (I gained my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London, and completed my accreditation in CBT at the world-renowned Institute of Psychology, Kings College), I realised that the ideas I was learning about were really useful, not just if you were experiencing mental illness, but to feel your best more of the time. They were simple to

20 ABSOLUTELY magazines

do and easy to put into practice, but it was only because I was training as a psychologist that I knew about them. That’s how my first books came about – to share the ideas more widely. Since then I have tended to follow what I’m interested in or learning about at the time, which is why my books span a range of topics. I love a project or a challenge, so it’s the perfect combination. Amazingly, the books are now sold all over the world!

Q Your latest book, How to Overcome Trauma and Find Yourself Again, has been described as revolutionary. What’s the premise and why did you write it?

A Our brain finds a way to trick us into believing that trauma happens to other people. My work as a Clinical Psychologist showed me what life was like, but I believed that these things would not happen to me or the people I loved. Then a significant personal trauma happened and I had to face up to reality. It threw me into a situation I had never expected to be in, and it was this experience, and the work I did to get through it, that inspired this book.

My personal and professional experience has shown me that trauma can be a turning point. You can go through unimaginable pain, but emerge stronger from the darkest of times. We can use these incredibly tough times to look within ourselves and to re-evaluate. They can remind us how precious life is and what is important, and give us the potential for a more meaningful life. It can bring everything into sharper focus. A chance to re-evaluate our priorities, strip away the unimportant and focus on what really matters to us. To learn more about ourselves, to see our strengths and become more resilient.

The question is not how we avoid these di cult experiences, but how we learn to live with them. Rather than deny their existence, we need to look at how best to cope when they happen – because they will. This book has been called revolutionary as I outline seven steps to overcome trauma. I also share seven stories, interspaced between the theory and strategies of people who have gone through trauma and come out the other side – one of the most helpful things when you go through trauma is knowing you are not alone.

Q Where are your favourite places in Sussex that make you feel happy?

A This time of year is always fun as you roll into the summer festivals and Pride. I love time on the beach (and in the sea!) with my family, preferably followed by a trip to Marrocco’s for ice-cream or dinner at Fatto a Mano – it’s the best pizza and the friendliest family restaurant in Hove. I enjoy watching my kids cycle at Preston Park Youth Cycling Club on Saturdays and wandering up to the Sussex Peasant to see what delicious treats they’ve got. I also love cycling in the South Downs with my husband or friends, I took up road cycling when I was 40 and it’s my favourite way to destress and get an exercise high.

Up close and PERSONAL

Have you ever wondered what goes into training a thoroughbred to win a race like the Grand National? In truth, it takes a lot of love, care and attention to detail from a large team of people. From 9-17 September, you can come and see that first hand at a yard in your area, as part of National Racehorse Week.

More than 130 venues including yards, studs and retraining centres nationwide will be throwing their stable doors open to the public, so you can experience the inner workings of a racing operation first hand – for free.

See just how fast a racehorse gallops, how much they eat a day, how they spend their downtime, and just how much time and a ection goes into caring for a racehorse before, during and after their career. You can ask questions to the wonderful team who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

As part of the initiative that invites more than 14,000 members of the public

to meet a racehorse, 40 community events will take place. Community events include engaging with school pupils through yard visits, as well as racehorses visiting care homes, hospitals and inner city schools. Throughout the week, the industry aims to bring racing closer to people of all ages and backgrounds, giving those, particularly in city locations, the chance to get close to a horse, sometimes for the very first time. The community visits will give those who may not have the chance to visit a venue the opportunity to meet a racehorse, to learn about the racing industry, and the wonderful lives current and retired racehorses lead. National Racehorse Week promises a unique and insightful day out for all the family, surrounded by animals and beautiful countryside. These open days will showcase a range of activities which varies from yard to yard, but all will o er the chance to meet racehorses in training, as well as the muchloved stable stars who have retired. Some yards even have purposefully designed equine swimming pools, an activity most horses enjoy. Physiotherapists, chiropractors and farriers (who put the horse’s shoes on) are an intrinsic part of any trainers' yard, and many open days will o er demonstrations and insight into this all-important aspect of horse management and welfare.

“With a stunning backdrop, what better place to host the BBC Good Food Festival than glorious Goodwood”

Great and the GOOD

The BBC Good Food Festival will be returning to Goodwood Racecourse from the 18-20 August.

This year, we have more producers, more street food, and more chefs and cooks than last year. The event is bigger, with a dedicated Street Food Village where visitors can taste their way through di erent cuisines from our street food traders, from vegan duck wraps, delicious toasties and halloumi bites, to freshly created seasonal dishes from Soho’s 10 Greek Street. We have more food and drink producers than ever before with lots of new brands joining the Festival and two brand new bars. Our drinks masterclasses are also bigger than ever, so no-one misses out on the chance to learn how to create (and drink) the perfect summer drink.

Headline sponsors Lexus will also give visitors the chance to test drive their all new electric vehicles on the private roads of the Goodwood Estate, including the famous Festival of Speed hill. Our eBike test track is also back, so visitors can cycle around the parade ring and test out the bikes with family and friends.

This year we have introduced The Festival Kitchen. We wanted our visitors to not only meet their foodie favourites, but to also be able to see them creating their dishes live. Hosted by Marcus Bean, we’ll have live cooking demonstrations throughout every day and visitors will be able to pick up tips and tricks to try at home. There will also be a chance to meet the stars of the show at our book signings and to ask questions at our Let’s Talk Food interviews. It’s a great opportunity to get inspired.

The first BBC Good Food Festival took place at Goodwood Racecourse last September. We were joined by 100 food and drink producers, many of whom were from the local area, alongside our fabulous foodie line up including Jane Dunn of Jane’s Patisserie, Chris Baber and TV’s Chris Bavin hosting the band stand. With a backdrop as stunning as the rolling hills of West Sussex, what better place to host the BBC Good Food Festival than glorious Goodwood. Sussex’s Kenny Tutt on appearing in The Festival Kitchen and the latest from his restaurant, Pitch

Q Why were you keen to appear at the BBC Good Food Festival?

A I have worked with the festival before, absolutely loved it, had some talented chefs there, and there is always so much delicious food on show.

Q Do you have any idea what you will showcase yet?

A We are by the coast, so we have a wonderful fish dish, a roasted cod with fregola, mussels, samphire and all the tastes of the sea.

Q Is the fact it’s at Goodwood an added bonus for you?

A I have always been a huge fan of Goodwood. We actually got married at Goodwood, so very fond memories. I love the grounds, I love going to the horse racing, and what they do trying to produce lots of stu on the land like beer and cheeses, and using cattle that’s raised on the land, is a wonderful thing.

Q How would you sum up the Sussex food and drink scene?

A It goes from strength to strength. I have always said we are positioned in between the Downs and the sea, and we have this real smorgasbord of everything around us, fantastic meat, fish, vegetables and breweries, you name it we have it on our doorstep. At Pitch we like to use as much as that produce as well as we can, the butter, the bread, the fish, locally grown vegetables. Pitch in the summer is such a great place because we love to use that produce, we don’t mess around with it too much.

soundtrack to a food-filled day out.The Estrellas, Polka Dots Duo and JC Singer will get everyone’s toes-tapping with classic tunes to enjoy with a drink in hand. There is plenty of fun for the whole family at the BBC Good Food Festival. The little ones can get involved with a range of kids’ activities. There will be plenty of crafts for them to try, making beaded bracelets, creating coasters and biscuit decorating. For the grown-ups, there’s a whole host of drinks masterclasses with Bone Idyll – something for everyone.

I’m looking forward to seeing the festival come to life with cookery demos, drinks masterclasses and all the other activities. Most of all, I’m looking forward to seeing our lovely visitors and exhibitors enjoying the show, with picnics, full shopping bags and lots of smiles…

Q What else do you have planned over the summer?

A We have Pub in the Park coming up, various events and festivals over the summer, and a new summer menu launching at Pitch - and doing the thing I love to do, cooking at the restaurant and talking about food. Hopefully another beautiful, bright and breezy summer.

BUILDER Confidence

Q Have you always had an interest in fashion?

A Fashion has always been a significant part of my life. From a young age, I had a deep passion for clothing and design. I used to make clothes for my dolls, the kinds that I wasn't allowed to wear, I found joy in creating them. My mother's talent for sewing inspired me, and I would often use leftover fabrics to design outfits for my baby dolls, imagining extravagant fashion shows. During my time at university, I discovered knitting and began making unique pieces that caught the attention of my schoolmates. I even started taking commissions to create end of year outfits for people I knew. These experiences nurtured my love for fashion and fueled me for sure, but I never thought I would become the woman I am today. Fashion has always been a means of self expression for me, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to explore and express my creativity through my designs. Fashion, for me, is not just about creating beautiful garments; it is a powerful means of self expression. I believe that the clothes we wear can convey who we are and what we aspire to be.

“I believe that the clothes we wear can convey who we are and what we aspire to be”
ELIF KÖSE

Q You launched your fashion brand in 2009 – what inspired it?

A The inspiration behind the launch of my fashion brand in 2009 stemmed from a series of serendipitous events. It all began with the discovery of vintage fabrics that were destined to be tipped by my ex-husband's nanny. Instead of allowing them to go to waste, I saw the potential in these materials and transformed them into the foundation of my first collection. So her rubbish was my treasure!

Q What inspires a new design?

A What inspires a new design for me are women who embody the spirit of courage, strength, and unwavering confidence. I am particularly drawn to those who refuse to accept "no" as an answer and are determined to make a di erence. These women inspire me with their resilience and their willingness to uplift others. Their boldness and fearlessness become the driving force

behind my designs, as I strive to create pieces that reflect their empowering energy.

Q What’s new for summer?

A Outfits that give the women an extra layer of courage and boost their confidence. Designs perfect for standing tall and being whoever they want to be! Pinks, blues, sparkles and flowy pieces designed to last.

Q Have you evolved in any way over the years?

A Yes, I have certainly evolved in many ways over the years. Initially, I believed that outer confidence could be achieved by finding the perfect outfit. However, my personal development journey led me to a profound realisation that true confidence goes beyond external appearances.

With this newfound understanding, I made it my mission to help others experience a deep sense of confidence and liberation. I

became committed to guiding individuals in breaking free from the chains of their past, the influence of others' opinions, and the need for external validation. I discovered that genuine worthiness comes from within, and I was determined to assist others on their transformative journeys. I became a transformational breathwork master, studied NLP and did leadership courses to grow and have the knowledge to help others. Taking a leap of faith, I went above and beyond my initial commitments. I made the bold decision to invest in a property in my hometown Ayvalik, Turkey, transforming it into a retreat centre.

Q What do you o er at your retreat?

A I o er a safe and transformative space for self-discovery and personal growth. It is a sanctuary where women can embark on an inner journey to find true happiness and liberation from their own limiting beliefs. Through a combination of empowering programs, healing practices, workshops, coaching and personalised mentoring, I guide individuals to tap into their inner strength, overcome past traumas, and unlock their true potential. This retreat serves as a catalyst for self-discovery and provides a supportive environment for women to become the heroes of their own stories. It is a place where they can shed the expectations of others and embrace their authentic selves, ultimately finding the happiness and fulfilment they have been seeking.

GOOD Feeling

Sussex nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed’s new book o ers plenty of family foodie inspiration that’s a ordable, but also healthy. Here’s three recipes from How To Feed Your Family

46 ABSOLUTELY magazines

Cover all Curry

Serves 4

Hands-on time: 10 mins

Cook time: 25-30 mins

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil

• 200ml hot water

• 1 white onion, peeled and thinly sliced

• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped or crushed

• Handful of coriander, stalks finely chopped and leaves reserved for the top, or ½ tbsp dried coriander

• 1 carrot, peeled and cut into thin rounds

• 300g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into 2cm chunks

• ½–1 tbsp mild curry powder

• 400ml tin coconut milk

• 400g tin chickpeas, drained

• 100g mangetout, roughly chopped into thirds

To Serve

• Cooked basmati rice

• Natural yoghurt or dairyfree alternative

• Lime wedges

METHOD

1 Heat the oil in a large frying pan (or wok) over a medium heat, add the onion, garlic, coriander stalks (no tops) and carrot. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2 Add the butternut squash and mild curry powder and cook, stirring, for another 5 minutes.

3 Add the coconut milk, 200ml of hot water and the chickpeas and cook for 15–20 minutes (until the squash is soft and the sauce reduces a little).

4 Add the mangetout for the final 5 minutes.

5 Serve with rice, yoghurt dolloped on top and the picked coriander leaves (if you fancy) and a squeeze of lime.

For babies and young children: Blend the sauce with the veggies in a separate bowl, or just make sure you chop those veggies really well for toddlers. You also might want to go a bit easier with the curry powder.

Baked Banana Bars

Makes 24 small squares or 12 bars

Hands-on time: 5 mins

Cook time: 45–55 mins

INGREDIENTS

• 100g porridge oats

• 180ml milk of choice

• 2 large, very ripe bananas (around 200g in total)

• 85g sultanas (or raisins, chopped dates, chopped dried apricots)

• 1⁄2 tsp mixed spice (or ground cinnamon or nutmeg)

• 3 tbsp mixed seeds (ground for babies/toddlers

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan and line a 20cm square shallow baking tin with nonstick baking paper. Mix all the ingredients together (except the seeds), then mash it well with

a fork to completely break up the bananas. Once everything is well mixed, scoop it into the baking tin and level the top. Sprinkle the mixed seeds on top (leave o or grind if serving to babies and young children).

2 Bake for 50–55 minutes, until the top is golden and crisp. Once cooked, remove from the tin using the baking paper and leave to cool on a rack until either warm or cooled to room temperature.

3 Slice into 24 small squares, or 12 larger bars to serve. The bars will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or can be wrapped in cling film/beeswax and frozen individually, then defrosted on the counter overnight ready for the morning. You can also reheat them uncovered in a microwave for 30 seconds if you’d like them warm.

For babies and young children: They should be okay with the texture of these as soon as they have moved on to slightly more complex finger foods. Avoid whole seeds, o er them ground instead, or simply leave them o any of the bars/squares that are for your baby/toddler.

Lower-Sugar Marble Cake

Makes a single layer cake (double up the recipe to make another layer)

Hands-on time: 10 mins

Cook time: 25–30 mins

INGREDIENTS

• 80g Greek yoghurt

• 4 tbsp olive oil

• 90g light brown sugar

• 80ml milk of choice

• 1 large free-range egg or 1 flaxseed egg

• 150g plain flour

• 2 tsp baking powder

• 1½ tbsp cocoa powder

For the topping

• 100g Greek yoghurt

• 1 tbsp of icing sugar,

• 150g fresh strawberries and/ or raspberries, trimmed

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan. Grease a loose-bottomed 20cm cake tin. If using a flaxseed egg, make this now.

2 In a large bowl (or stand mixer) whisk the yoghurt, oil and sugar until combined. Stir in the milk and egg (or flaxseed egg), then mix in the flour and baking powder.

3 Pour half the cake mix into the tin, then mix the cocoa powder in the remaining mix in the bowl to create chocolate batter. Pour into the cake tin and swirl through the plain vanilla mix. Smooth out the top and bake for 25–30 minutes or until it is cooked through and golden on top.

4 Remove from the oven. Let the cake cool in the tin for 5 minutes then carefully remove from the tin and allow to cool completely on a rack.

5 Once the cake has cooled completely, sprinkle it with some icing sugar, and top with some strawberries/raspberries. If you are making a double layer then you could fill with a little thick natural Greek yoghurt, little chia seed jam and a little thick natural Greek yoghurt and then pop another marble cake on top and dust with icing sugar.

Absolutely meets Sir Ian Botham to talk cricket, golf and the power of cannabidiol

50 ABSOLUTELY
magazines
SIR

Sir Ian Botham is remembered for routinely besting titans of cricket. Now 67, Botham enjoyed a long and (very) illustrious career; for Somerset, the England team, as well as spells in Australia.

Frankly, it’s good of them to let him in, given his celebrated match-winning performance against Kim Hughes’s baggy greens during the Ashes Test at Headingley, in 1981. Electing to bat first, Australia had England on the ropes and enforced the follow-on. Out strode Botham, clocking an unbeaten 149 runs before heading back to the dressing room for a cigar. That he also took seven wickets only cemented his legend.

So it came as something of a challenge when in July last year Botham found himself unable to walk around a golf course as he once could – in addition to being one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, golf is a lifelong passion.

It was his son, Liam, who sent his father something new to incorporate in his daily routine. Specifically, the EthicaCBD Sports Gel with CBD and CBG. Based in the seaside town of Bude, in Cornwall, the company launched three years ago and have quickly earned global recognition, winning a gong at the World CBD Awards in 2022. CBD products

are increasingly being incorporated into wellness regimes. As the name suggests, EthicaCBD go to great lengths to create what they describe as, “the highest quality ethical CBD for people and planet”.

As it turns out, alongside proving themselves as the ethical front runner of the UK CBD industry, they’re also getting sporting legends quite literally back into the swing of things. After using the all-natural CBD gel, Botham returned to the fairway and renewed his spot in competitive golf, turning out in the Alfred Dunhill Links last year.

In conversation with Botham, ‘competitive’ is a word that crops up a lot. The Botham family is a genuine sporting dynasty. His son, the aforementioned Liam, played county cricket for Hampshire, as well as dual codes in top-flight rugby (union for Cardi Blues, league for Bradford Bulls).

Liam’s son, James, meanwhile, plies his own sporting trade in elite rugby union, both for Cardi and the Wales national side. As a passionate Englishman, is Botham senior conflicted about having a dragon in the dynasty? “Goodness, no. James was born in Wales and always swore allegiance.”

Just as well, considering James’ fiancée is the Wales hockey international Izzy Webb. In any Botham household, the competitive instinct is strong. “I play everything to win. I even want to beat the grandchildren at tiddlywinks”, Botham says. These days it’s golf that keeps his competitive juices flowing. “When I was playing county cricket, a lot of the guys played golf.” For a world-class batsman, golf is surely a seamless transition. “It should be, given a golf ball is still when you hit it but it doesn’t always work that way.”

Of those able to make the switch, Botham recalls that, “Viv could hit the ball a long way”. ‘Viv’, for those too young to remember, is Sir Vivian Richards, the fearsome West Indies batsman who could no doubt hit a cannonball across the Channel. “At my peak I played o a handicap of 3,” Botham says. Which must have seemed a distant memory last summer. At the Dunhill Links, Botham found that the gel was the competitive advantage that he needed.

The gel’s active ingredient, cannabidiol (CBD), was first discovered in 1940 but it’s only in recent years that it has been developed for use in a wide range of products. EthicaCBD Sports Gel combines two powerful cannabinoids with other dynamic natural extracts such as organic silicium, blackpepper oil, menthol and camphor, ensuring you get the very best plant-based care.

HORMONE HEALTH

The founder of Clinic51 on what we all need to know about the menopause

If you are woman, know a woman, or love a woman, you need to understand the menopause’. This quote from menopause campaigner Diane Danzebrink perfectly captures the potential of menopause to touch all of our lives, at some time or another. So how can women not only survive, but thrive, during this time of their life? Dr Katie Armstrong, founder of Clinic51, tells us more…

WHAT ARE THE MAIN SYMPTOMS OF THE MENOPAUSE?

Perimenopause and menopause symptoms are much more wide-ranging than the archetypal hot flush. Women can su er from psychological as well as physical symptoms, which can be anything from di culty sleeping to anxiety, heart palpitations to muscle and joint sti ness. Many women notice di erences in their skin and hair, and changes in their energy levels. In fact many women don’t even realise that

the symptoms they are experiencing can be connected to the menopause.

HOW DO YOU DIAGNOSE THE MENOPAUSE?

It’s a common misconception that the menopause can be diagnosed with blood tests; in fact due to the hormone fluctuations that are at the heart of the menopause, using blood tests can be extremely unreliable. We diagnose women according to their symptoms, having taken the time to take a full medical history and understand their current concerns.

IS HRT THE ONLY WAY OF TREATING MY SYMPTOMS?

Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, works by replacing the female hormones that decline during this period of our lives. It is available in a number of forms, from tablets to skin patches, gels and sprays. Many women find HRT extremely e ective in treating their menopausal symptoms.

However, many choose not to take HRT, due to their medical history or preferences. There are other e ective holistic therapies available, which we are able to discuss with women in our consultations, and o er in house at our women’s health clinic thanks to the range of holistic health partners we work with.

DO YOU ONLY TREAT WOMEN GOING THROUGH THE MENOPAUSE?

We o er consultations to women at any stage of life, whose symptoms may be related to their hormones. For example many postmenopausal women su er with ongoing genito-urinary symptoms such as repeated urinary infections, stress incontinence or vaginal dryness, and don’t realise that there are simple treatments that don’t involve HRT, but that can be life-changing.

At Clinic51 we are able to take the time to understand your health, goals, and concerns – and o er a holistic service that enables women to live healthily and happily through the menopause, and beyond.

LET IT SLIDE

Olympic athlete Mica Moore, Sweaty Betty founder Tamara Hill Norton, and This Morning’s Dr Zoe participated in an immersive group-ride experience on the Brighton i360 recently, along with seven members of the public. Together they raised over £2,500 for the Sweaty Betty Foundation, which encourages girls into sports. Participants were treated to an extraordinary blend of physical activity and empowering conversations led by Elaine Hart, the founder of POWER Fitness Events. With her soothing voice accompanying a high-energy

playlist, Elaine o ered gentle guidance and motivation to the riders. During the experience participants also received a banana and a pen and were encouraged to write a word that either expressed their emotions or served as a personal motivator, adding an unexpected element to the unforgettable experience.

The Sweaty Betty Foundation, known for its

commitment to empowering girls through sports, will use the funds raised to further their e orts in encouraging young women to embrace an active lifestyle. This charitable ride not only showcased the importance of physical activity, but also highlighted the power of collaboration and community support in making a di erence.

The founder of both Sweaty Betty and the Sweaty Betty Foundation, and Sussex local, Tamara Hill Norton, says:

“The event was held at an amazing location and was filled with immense excitement. The atmosphere was vibrant, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, all in support of a worthy cause.

The funds raised during the event will directly benefit girls, serving as inspiration for the upcoming generation to discover activities that bring them joy.” It truly shows two wheels are really good.

DYNAMIC

DUO

Q How did you two first meet?

A Simon: We met whilst at Portsmouth University, where we were both studying architecture – you could say our eyes met across the drawing boards!

Q Pre-George & James, what were your backgrounds in the design industry?

A Simon: Between us and our creative team, we have over 75 years's experience in architecture, on everything from the York Theatre Royal, the café at Westminster Abbey, to houses that are everything their owners ever dreamed of. I worked in London on some interesting projects that varied across sectors and size, from new Mews Houses for the Cadogan Estate in Chelsea, a refurbishment of a Michael Kors retail store and concepts for a Grade II Listed theatre in York.

Darren: Previously I worked for design practices such as Panter Hudspith and Allies and Morrison. I was part of the design team on projects such as a new Synagogue in north London, redevelopment plans for Winchester city centre and a contemporary new home in the South Downs National Park.

Q What inspired you to join forces and launch George & James?

A Darren: We're partners in life, and to us it made sense to become partners in work

ABSOLUTELY magazines 65
INTERIORS • PROFILE THEIR WORK IS BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL
Absolutely uncovers the design story behind Sussex-based George & James as founders Simon Drayson and Darren Leach take us behind the scenes

as well. Architecture is not something that can be left on the drawing board, it is something we live and breathe. We relish the freedom it brings us, to work on the projects that really excite us.

Q From day one, what did you want to o er?

A Simon: We have a simple mission: to create a place that starts with you. We believe that the places where we live, work and play should be healthy and happy –filled with natural light, connected with nature, giving us everything we need to thrive, on every project we strive to bring these elements into the design.

Q Is there a particular ethos behind your approach to design?

A Simon: Our approach is as much about listening carefully, thinking deeply and being human as it is about jumping through hoops and getting your project to the finish line.

Q How do you like to work with clients?

A Darren: We listen to our clients before we do anything else. We come to each architectural project with open eyes and ears, and with honesty, curiosity and care. To this we add our professional architectural design knowledge and experience, all of which inspire us and push us a little further. We like to follow a clear

process; to give us an easy way of keeping things on track, keeping to budget, and bringing every element of a project to a beautifully choreographed conclusion.

Q Why did you move and set up in Sussex?

A Simon: The move to Sussex was a personal one for us; after years enjoying the London lifestyle it was time for us to move out of the capital to be closer to our family. It also gave us more space and idyllic rural surroundings, the perfect place to raise our own family. There are also plenty of walks for our whippet Archi!

Q How do you see the future evolving?

A Darren: We have put down roots in Sussex, so we see the future of the business here working on local and national projects. We have grown a team around us, but we intentionally do not want to ever grow the team too large as we enjoy the personal approach you get with a smaller studio where we still are hands on with the design, rather than caught up in the bureaucracy of running the business. We would like to become more involved with public buildings, with our dream projects being a National Trust visitor centre or a boutique hotel-cum-village pub, projects that support local communities in Sussex

georgeandjames.co.uk

THE FARMHOUSE

 Darren: Located on a stunning site, deep within the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, the project comprises the building of a new farmhouse to create a characterful family home. The house has been completed with landscaped terraced gardens, swimming pool and refurbished outbuildings.

The design is inspired by the local agricultural vernacular, embracing the rural aesthetic, but with a more modern take on the design. The project was a collaboration: we worked with the owner, Graham Morrison (an architect himself), furniture makers (and our studio neighbour) Fisher Morrison, and landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith.

WOODVILLE ROAD

 Simon: This project was actually for my parents, so it is a personal favourite as it is one that we get to enjoy staying in. The dilapidated Edwardian house was in need of love, attention and a strong vision for a successful refurbishment.

We made much-needed connections between previously disconnected spaces, brought back the Edwardian grandeur which previous owners had smothered with dubious interventions, and chose a vibrant colour for the kitchen which spoke of the seaside surroundings (and pushed our clients beyond their comfort zone).

CROSSBUSH LANE

 Darren: As is so o en the case with heritage buildings, this Grade II Listed home was picture perfect on the outside, but just did not work on the inside. Internally it feels cramped.

The owners wanted a comfortable, warm home, with improved living spaces the whole family could use together. Our concept reuses the old extensions footprint, but with an improved circulation that maximises the space and fits the lifestyle needs. Rotating around the existing courtyard, the extension appears as an organic cluster of rural buildings. Coming soon…

Specialist Ripples answer the most commonly asked bathroom questions

ith over 35 years experience designing bathrooms, the team at Ripples understands that the process can sometimes be daunting. Its designers are experts on all aspects of bathrooms and here, showroom owner and designer Helen Brown from Ripples Chichester, answers some of the most commonly asked bathroom-related questions.

Q With Pinterest, Instagram and other tools, can't I just design my bathroom myself?

A Although there are a lot of great tools out there to give you style inspiration these days, there are so many other things to be considered when designing a bathroom. Considerations around plumbing, electrics and room layout are best handled by a professional. If you are anything like me, you will have a lot of images on your Pinterest boards or magazine collection, encompassing

Wa number of di erent styles. A Ripples designer can work with you to narrow down your choices, incorporating your inspiration into one cohesive scheme.

Q What lighting do I need in a bathroom?

A The first level of lighting needed for all bathrooms will be either downlights or a central light. This is controlled by one switch and gives you the overall lighting needed for general use and cleaning. The next level of lighting is task lighting. This could include lighting within your mirror or wall lights either side of the mirror. Wherever possible, go for side rather than top lighting to give a good overall lighting with minimal shadows – perfect for getting ready on dark winter mornings. The next level of lighting to consider is mood lighting. Low level lighting is key in a bathroom, especially one with a bath or in an en-suite. This can be incorporated in soft spot lighting or strip lighting on top of recesses, by a bath or underneath a vanity unit. In a family bathroom, you may also

want to consider a PIR (passive infrared) sensor. As children get older they can then go into the bathroom at night on their own and lights will automatically come on.

Q What are some quick tips for creating a more eco-friendly bathroom?

• Heating: opt for dual fuel heating as this can dramatically reduce energy usage in your home.

• Lighting: LED spotlights and feature lighting use approximately 85% less energy than traditional bulbs.

• Extractor fans: choosing an extractor fan with a built-in timer and/or humidity sensor will use less energy as it switches o when not in use.

• Surfaces: glass surfaces are one of the greenest options available as they can keep being recycled again and again.

Brighton Girls’ Head on how they are leading the way as an innovator in education

In business, innovation is key. It moves companies forward, evolves through customer demand and ensures employers have the resources to operate in the environment around them. At Brighton Girls, we believe that schools and what they o er should evolve in the same way and we are constantly scrutinising what and how we teach our pupils to ensure that it is relevant to the times we live in.

That doesn’t mean to say we don’t teach the very important subjects we are all familiar with from our own schooldays, it's just that now we ask if we are teaching them in the right way and whether we have adapted what we teach to today’s world? The revered educationalist Sir Ken Robinson argues that our current system for teaching children is based on an industrial paradigm of education that is standardised and based around conformity. Yet we live in an age of fastmoving innovation, where AI is an inevitable progression. Global issues such as climate change are no longer problems for the science community, but something that we must all tackle. We live in a period of history where problem solving, creativity, empathy, teamwork and collaborative thinking are really important skills to learn.

Childhoods are di erent now too. Social media has altered the landscape for most young people and consequently our pastoral o ering must adapt. Talking about mental health is now part of the lexicon, thankfully, and this gives schools an opportunity to start conversations ahead of problems arising and fashion our PSHE curriculum into something relevant to our pupils’ lives. This then is my guiding mantra as Head of Brighton Girls and is the reason behind some of my recent innovations at the school. I’m very much looking forward to the arrival of our new Head of Design and Innovation, Kris Pointer, in September. In days gone by, he would have been called our DT teacher, but this is an area I want to update. For many years in the UK this subject has languished unloved and underfunded, seen as a discipline

for less academic students and taught by a man in a white coat with some wood jammed in a vice. In fact, design is now a hugely sought-after skill as British companies cry out for employees who can work through and solve realworld issues, both conceptually and physically. Kris will be presenting our pupils with challenges communicated by local businesses and asking them to design solutions, with the aid of an online platform he has created and will be sharing with many local schools.

I have also appointed our coder in residence, Jayne Meadows. Jayne already runs a wildly popular coding club and she will focus on bringing coding out of its club enclave and into the mainstream curriculum. Coding involves problem solving, improves creativity, builds persistence, boosts confidence and gives pupils future ready skills. Why wouldn’t we teach this?

But we are not just innovating in our curriculum. We have used extra-curricular activities to look at improving girls’ mental health as they navigate the tricky teen years. That’s why, as we emerged from the pandemic which a ected young people so disproportionately, we introduced

76 ABSOLUTELY magazines

laughter classes. Yes, you read that right. Did you know that the act of laughing, even if it’s not real laughter, reduces stressinducing cortisol levels and raises the production of endorphins? We also take our girls sea-swimming, a well-documented mood booster, and o er lessons in using power tools, which the girls love!

We innovate in sport too. Not every girl likes traditional team sports, so why not o er something di erent? Our prep school had a hit on its hands when it introduced non-contact boxing and our skateboarding club is full to the rafters.

There’s one last thing I’d like to share and that’s how passionate I feel about pupils working alongside the community in which the school sits, because we know it's beneficial to everyone. Just after I started as Head, back in early 2020, we introduced online learning not just for

our prep pupils, but other local primary school students too. We saw how well this was received and followed up with our Stargazing project, which aimed to help young people from a wide socio economic background to learn about design thinking through creating their own DIY telescopes and learning about space. Just recently, Jayne Meadows also led our popular Space Days, which welcomed more than 450 Year 5 students from state primary schools across Brighton and Hove where they took part in a space buggy coding workshop. Brighton Girls sits in a young, vibrant city full of innovators and entrepreneurs. It’s nothing less than our duty as a school to equip our pupils with the skills to join them in becoming the problem-solvers of the future.

FIRST for everything

Q How long have you been Head of Burgess Hill Girls and what originally attracted you to the role?

A This has been my first year as Head of Burgess Hill Girls and also my first year as a Head. There has been lots to do and experience, but I can honestly say I have loved every minute of it! I first thought about a career in education when I was at school. I had a wonderful teacher who helped me discover my strengths. She inspired me to want to do the same for others.

Since then I have taught in schools in Germany and England, most recently

at Queen Margaret’s School for Girls in York where I was Senior Deputy Head. My daughter also went to an all-girls school, so I have personally seen the transformational change in her as a result of being in a nurturing girls’ school. I think girls thrive through positive relationships and I really enjoy the strength of bonds formed between students and teachers at girls’ schools. I am passionate about girls’ education and believe girls’ schools still have a crucial role to play in society, developing confident and talented women who will continue to push for equality in all aspects of life.

So when choosing a school for my first Headship, Burgess Hill Girls was an obvious choice. It is also a through school, which gives the school a special community feeling.

Q What do you think makes your school stand out?

A Burgess Hill Girls is a school that doesn’t do things by halves. It inspires girls to work hard and achieve their full potential. Our desire to create tomorrow’s women is achieved by having a curriculum, facilities, activities and experiences that are all specifically designed to enhance the development of girls and young women. Being a through-school on a single site also creates an incredibly supportive and family-like atmosphere where girls and sta get to know each other exceptionally well. I also think what Burgess Hill Girls does better than any other school is developing ‘soft’ skills like creative thinking and emotional intelligence. We know these days that employers probably place greater importance on a person’s strength in these skills as opposed to purely academic ability.

Q In Nursery, how do you look to instil a love of learning?

A We are fortunate to be able to o er our ‘Outstanding’ rated nursery provision to local families. As the nursery is located on our campus, it has the advantage of being able to o er more indoor and, in our opinion even more important, outdoor space for the children to play, explore and learn. The ethos in our nursery is actually not that di erent to our school. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, but above all else we want to give each child the confidence to ‘have a go’ and embrace all that nursery life has to o er.

Q How would you say the teaching then evolves through the year groups?

A In the Prep School we believe happiness is the keystone to girls’ growth in selfconfidence, resilience, and the essential foundation in ensuring girls feel supported both academically and emotionally. We are proud of our ‘can-do’ attitude, which remains with the girls as they progress through the school. We also ‘play-hard’

with a full and varied programme of arts, creative activities, sports, charity fundraising, visits and residential trips. It is more of the same in the Senior School. On top we start to help girls map out their individual journey with our unique B-spoke programme, which is tailored to helping them develop on their personal interests and aspirations. In the Sixth Form, in addition to A-levels and the Extended Project Qualification, which all girls undertake, we o er our BOLD programme, which equips students with all the emotional and social skills they will need to take on the opportunities and challenges which life will bring.

Q What kind of enrichment activities do you o er?

A I think this question should be what don’t we o er! We genuinely try to ensure that all students get to try as many activities and experiences as possible. Almost every department organises dedicated activities to immerse students in a specific area of the subject. There are also many di erent trips to reflect students' personal interests; from ski racing to drama to debating, and a whole host of sports tours.

Q And how would you sum up your sports provision?

A I consider myself to be an outdoor person. I love swimming, tennis, running and cycling and have completed a couple of Ironman triathlons in the past. Consequently, I am keen we pass the benefits of outdoor life and sport on to our students. Burgess Hill Girls has always been strong in sports with cricketers, hockey players and triathletes

who have gone on to represent England and Great Britain. So sport has always been and will continue to be a major part of the education we o er. We believe in participation for all, o ering a broad extra-curricular sports programme and encouraging all students to try as many sports as possible until they find something they love. They almost always do!

Q What have been the highlights this year?

A I always enjoy our weekly assemblies, where sta and students come together to celebrate individual and collective achievements, of which, I am proud to say, there are many. The really special moments for me, however, are when I have had the opportunity to get involved with the normal day to day life of students, be it reading to the girls in the Prep School, talking to Nursery children about careers or watching Senior students enjoy an intense game of volleyball. Burgess Hill Girls is such a happy and nurturing place

The Grand Hotel

The iconic Eastbourne favourite has announced the completion of extensive bedroom renovations

Known by locals as ‘The White Palace’, the five-star Grand Hotel located on Eastbourne’s seafront has recently seen a complete refurbishment to 28 ‘Superior’ bedrooms, as well as a complete overhaul of the bathrooms in the luxury suites.

With the work spanning over 11 months, the renovations consisted of removing all the existing fixtures and fittings and upgrading and modernising the floors and bathroom facilities. The new bathrooms provide an added touch of elegance with white and grey marble floors, and large walk-in showers with sustainable refillable toiletries by Molton Brown, to reduce waste.

The newly refurbished suites showcase a combination of understated luxury with top of the range amenities and stylish, warm lighting and interiors. Carefully appointed to transform the suites, Clague Architects ensured rooms were tastefully designed and sympathetic with the hotel, which dates back to 1875. The rooms display soft and elegant furnishings with coastal notes of blue and white, drawing on the hotel’s surroundings and sea views allowing the feeling of tranquillity from the outside in.

The extensive works were carried out whilst the hotel was still fully operational, requiring a high degree of e ciency and planning to suit the ever-changing daily environment of the hotel’s operations, without disturbing the five-star experience.

Perfectly positioned on Eastbourne’s seafront, the Grand Hotel o ers 152 bedrooms and suites, all luxuriously furnished, many with sweeping sea views, balconies, or private patios. Others have adjoining rooms which are a prime option for family stays.

The hotel’s elegant cocktail bar is stocked entirely with premium spirits. Guests can enjoy a drink on the Chatsworth Terrace with views towards the sea, once shared by the likes of Charlie Chaplin, classical composers Debussy and Elgar and, more recently, Dame Helen Mirren.

Additionally, the hotel features two restaurants: The Mirabelle Restaurant, which has gained an exceptional reputation for its fine dining menus, and The Garden Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner amidst a backdrop of beautiful turn-ofthe-century cornices and grand chandeliers.

The Grand’s Health Club has an indoor swimming pool with whirlpool spa, an outdoor heated pool (open during the summer months), plus a gym and health spa where a range of beauty treatments can be enjoyed.

The hotel is superbly located just moments from the start of the South Downs Way and close to Beachy Head and Birling Gap for day trips. In Eastbourne itself, Devonshire Park holds international tennis tournaments each summer and the town hosts annual events such as Eastbourne Airbourne – the largest free seaside air show in the world. And not forgetting the Towner Art Gallery hosting the Turner Price later this year.
