ebruary is a bit of a nothing month. It’s invariably cold and wet and there’s little to look forward to (other than March). For those in love there is Valentine’s Day to enjoy, so to honour the loved-up, flick to page 26 where we’ve rounded up the most seductive lingerie to awaken your amorous side just in time for the big day. For the single among us, the 14th is simply a day to endure, so instead of love, view this as the month of fashion. London, Milan, Paris and New York invite the fashion industry’s most influential to witness the unveiling of leading womenswear designers’ newest collections. So, inspired by the turning of the style season, I’ve made this month’s magazine a hot-to-trot fashion

special featuring the best of SS15. We take a moment with womenswear designer Alice Temperley over on page 16, and Ireland’s most stylish man, Darren Kennedy, sits down with us and discusses icons and awards (page 24). On page 35, Apphia Michael, the former online fashion editor of Wallpaper* magazine shows us how to wear the minimal trend this season. See you in spring! 

CULTURE / INTERVIEW Q&A

OPEN BOOK Absolutely grab a moment with best selling author Philip Kerr to discuss his newest novel I n t e r v i e w R o m y va n d e n B r o e k e

that you can get away with anything just that children are less forgiving of endless descriptions of things; they want story, but you still have to set a scene and you have to learn how to set the scene with less; that’s just a matter of experience.

ROMY VAN DEN BROEKE Did you always want to be an author? PHILIP KERR Yes, for as long as I can remember. Like Ray Liotta in Goodfellas except that he wanted to be a gangster. Maybe a gangster would have been more fun, but as soon as I could read I knew I wanted to make my living writing books. I’m not sure why. Something struck me about the romance of being an author. RVDB Why crime novels? PK By the back door. I wanted to write about Berlin and the thirties and what it was like to be an ordinary sort of person under the Nazis. Writing about a dentist or an insurance salesman didn’t seem to fit the ticket so I started writing about a cop which was much more interesting. RVDB Your Bernie Gunter detective novels have been a huge success, why do you think that is? PK He’s the best kind of character to write about in that he doesn’t always act like a hero should. He is like anyone else in that sometimes he does things of which he’s not proud. Characters in novels who always do the right thing are a bit boring. Bernie Gunther makes bad choices sometimes. I guess that’s one reason why he seems to be a success. He also has a dark sense of humour which also helps. RVDB Tell me about your new novel, The Winter Horses? PK It’s a novel for young adults set during the holocaust, in Ukraine which was the worst time for that country. I wanted to give an impression of what it was really like for a child to live through this period. But to help carry the story I discovered that there was a nature reserve where rare breeds of horses - including Przewalski’s Horses, the rarest horses in the world, the ones that

I have a LUXURY HISTORIANS don’t; when I can’t FIND

OUT FACTS, FICTION EXISTS

feature on the walls of prehistoric caves - were being reestablished. At the same time as trying to save herself the young heroine tries to save a pair of these rare horses which become a useful metaphor for persecution. RVDB How do your Bernie Gunter novels differ from books like The Winter Horses? PK The process is not dissimilar. I mean, I take writing for children every bit as seriously as writing for adults. It’s not

15 B&C_FEB15_PHILIP KERR.indd 15

RVDB Your novels are usually set between the 1930s and 1950s, including The Winter Horses, which is set in 1941. What draws you to this part of history? PK I think the Nazi Revolution is probably the most important period in world history since the Reformation. And we are still living with the consequences of what happened at this time. For example, the situation in Israel is a direct result of what happened back then; not to mention the situation in Ukraine: it becomes easier to understand why Russia wants to hang onto the Ukraine when you realise just how many Red Army soldiers died in the fight to get it back from the Germans. RVDB Do you find writing historical fiction draws you to work like a historian? PK Yes, but I have a luxury that historians don’t have; when I can’t find out the facts that’s where fiction can exist - in the space between the known facts. RVDB The Winter Horses is your second historic novel for children, is it a challenge to write about history for children? PK The first children's novel I wrote was set in 1968, during the moon missions. It is a challenge, yes. I like a challenge however. And I think this period is something that most children realise is going to be challenging for them, too. That’s good. Children should be challenged. u The Winter Horses, £12.99 walker.co.uk

Ask Alice Womenswear designer Alice Temperley on children, celebrity and meeting the Queen Wo r d s e d w i n a l a n g l e y

ABSOLUTELY Tell us about your newest collection… ALICE TEMPERLEY For Summer ‘15 I focused on a full dayto-evening offering in a relaxed, modern and versatile style. ABS You grew up on a farm in Somerset – how did that lead to designing? AT From a very young age I made things out of fabric and paint. I also sold earrings I had made for pocket money from the age of eight. Around the age of 11, we got our first television and I fell in love with the glamour of black and white films. This was where my clothes-making began; it was escapism into another world. I studied Textiles and Print [at Central Saint Martins] and made clothes to sell in order to pay my way through college. ABS Your husband works with you. How did you meet? AT I met my husband while working in the Met Bar. Five months later, we met again at a party. He proceeded to woo me with dates and then, after some time, I decided that he was actually very special. ABS How did having a child change things? [her son Fox was born in 2008] AT I had no idea how much having a child would change my whole world. Everything else comes second. Time for yourself is just so minimal. I look at women like Stella [McCartney] with four kids or Anya Hindmarch with five and think, they can do it, so surely it’s possible. I always wanted four children but, if I’m lucky enough to have any more, I’d be happy with two or three.

CULTURE / INTERVIEW I COLLECT THINGS all the time.

Inspiration is

THE FUN BIT

ABS Can you describe your design process? AT I work very organically starting with the inspiration, which could be art, music, photography. This leads into colour and stories by technique, print, lace and appliqué etc. We build a fully elaborate story on our moodboards, create a muse and then start sketching. Pattern-making and lots of fittings follow. And then we go and see our suppliers and put all our show samples into work. ABS What inspires you? AT Everything that is around me – music, art, museums, travel... I am very lucky that I am constantly inspired by my surroundings and I collect things all the time. Inspiration is the fun bit. ABS Where are your clothes made and how do source the materials? AT I source my fabric from various places, primarily in Italy for

laces and for all our woven jacquards. The best mills are around Lake Como. ABS How do beautiful clothes make you feel? AT The joy that you can give somebody through what they wear is pretty amazing. For me, it’s about people leaving my shop happy. I believe our designs make women feel comfortable yet sensual. ABS You’re known for throwing fancy dress parties. What was the best one? AT I’ve thrown fancy dress parties since I was sixteen. I love them all, but ‘Leather, Lace, Debauchery and Grace’ was a good one. We had another which was just ‘Sequins.’ So simple, yet everybody looked unbelievable, twinkling in the sunset. ABS The Duchess of Cambridge has worn many of your designs. What does this mean to you? AT Of course, it is very flattering. ABS Is celebrity endorsement important? AT Celebrity endorsement is, of course, good exposure for a brand, and good for awareness. But it doesn’t faze me when celebrities wear my clothes. I once had an actress in the shop who clearly wanted special treatment, but that’s not what I’m about.

19 B&C_JAN15_ALICE TEMPERELY.indd 19

ABS Whose style do you admire? AT My mother and the women around me. People with individual style that are not label slaves and who mix things up effortlessly. ABS How did you find out about your MBE ( for Services to Fashion) and what happened when you met the Queen? AT It was an honour to meet the Queen, she was very knowledgeable and I was a little overwhelmed. When the letter came through I actually thought my assistant was joking at first. ABS What would your typical outfit be for: a) A work day AT A three piece suit, a white shirt and our Temperley London lace-ups from the Summer ‘15 collection b) The weekend The same, but a different three piece suit perhaps. I am having a suit moment! ABS If you hadn’t become a designer, you would have been…? A photographer or painter – there is still time for this.  27 Bruton Street, W1, 020 7229 7957 temperleylondon.com

artorial fashion is as transient as the body shapes that inspire it. The only body-trend that I’ve been longing to see the back of is this size 4/6 toned clique of shapeless zombies that have not only ruined what is intrinsically beautiful about a woman’s body, but wrecked many centuries of tailoring to boot. The type of figure I’m talking about doesn’t belong to the natural willowy twiggy-esque physique or petite person; it is that entirely unnatural body, which the owner has worked very hard, creating it to be as trim and as toned as it is possible to be (without looking ill). The result renders them with no shape at all, no physical personality. They’re just a generic sized pair of boobs, with a small, flattish bum and no hips. It is inspired by celebrities who live in front of cameras, but the reality of this body is in fact boring and unfeminine. Why would you want to get rid of the naturalness that makes you a woman – the softness of your flesh, the nip of your waist and curve of your bottom? It has inspired women’s clothing since time began! So if you’re worrying about having overdosed at Christmas and New Year, take a few pictures of Marilyn Monroe, Kate Upton or Kim Kardashian to the mirror with you, and just check you don’t rather suit those few extra pounds? They’re in Vogue after all… u

Q&A

ABOUT A BOY Darren Kennedy speaks to Absolutely fashion, France and fame I n t e r v i e w b y r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

ROMY VAN DEN BROEKE Did you always want to work in fashion? DARREN KENNEDY Actually no. I was always interested in style and all things aesthetic. I was that child who loved going shopping with my mum and helping her assemble outfits. But I never thought it was something that could even possibly be a part of my career. What a pleasant surprise! RV How did your career in the industry come about? DK I went to uni to study International Business and Languages, purely because I wanted to spend a year living in France. I ended up having the best year of my life in Bordeaux, then after uni I worked in Paris for a year. I finally returned home and started thinking about a career and ended up working in TV production. It’s from here I started nurturing my interest in fashion and style, which has come full circle. Now my TV career goes hand-in-hand with my fashion world. RV You count being a TV presenter, fashion writer, designer and blogger as just a few of your talents, which is your favourite? DK Nothing beats the buzz of live TV but it’s very hard to separate the different aspects of my work. They’re all very different and each presents various challenges. It’s a virtuous circle and I feel very privileged to get so much enjoyment from all the different elements of my work. RV You won Ireland’s Most Stylish Man, what does this mean for you? It was a lovely surprise!

My top style icons?

SAMUEL BECKETT.

We need to talk about

HIS STYLE MORE!

DK Do you feel pressure since winning this award? DK Not at all. I enjoy clothes but let’s be honest: what you wear is hardly a case of life or death. RV Who are your top three style icons? DK Steve McQueen, James Dean and my fellow Irishman Samuel Beckett. We need to talk about his style more! RV Tell me about your presenting career? DK My career in TV started when I was 19 while still at uni. I managed to wangle my way into a TV station and get work as a runner on a breakfast show. Since then I’ve learned my craft, working as everything from a researcher, producer, to a stage manager. My goal was always to be front of camera. I enjoy the variety of working on shows like ITV’s This Morning and Xtra Factor as well as more investigative documentaries like my show ‘Gay Daddy’. I also just wrapped filming on a new style culture and entertainment show ‘#Trending’. Right now I’m working on a new series called ‘The Unemployables’ where me and my co-presenter help two young people who are long term unemployed get a job. Think ‘Benefits Street’ meets ‘The Undatables’.

RV You have designed three collections with Louis Copeland, what has that been like? DK A brilliant, brilliant, brilliant experience. Louis is a master tailor who has dressed everyone from Bill Clinton to Brad Pitt so it’s been a massive learning curve for me. RV Any other collaborations in the pipeline? DK Nothing that I can talk about at this point but who knows, watch this space. RV Is there a difference between Irish fashion and British fashion to you? Does it differ with men and women? DK There are subtle differences but I think generally speaking they are not worlds apart and the Internet has made global style so accessible. Irish people have a great way of incorporating interesting textures into an outfit. RV Who is your favourite designer at the moment? DK Tom Ford is one of my absolute favourites. Irish designers are really enjoying a moment on the global stage with rising stars Simone Rocha, JW Anderson and up and coming designer Daniel Romeril. In London, 29-year-old Joshua Kane is without doubt one of the most exciting young tailors and he’s quite the character too. His recently opened first tailoring shop in Old Spitalfields Market is a must-visit for any fans of a fine suit. RV What does the future hold for Darren Kennedy? DK Well now, if I knew that I’d be a fortuneteller. u

Basic Instinct Minimalist dressing gets a serene makeover this spring

ZERO + MARIA CORNEJO SS15

Wo r d s A p p h i a M i c h a e l

I

f the prospect of summer dressing in clashing floral print and denim-on-denim makes your head spin, rest your weary eyes on the antidote – minimalism; the drip that has been feeding the veins of many a designer’s aesthetic for a few seasons now. With an emphasis on clean lines and reductive design, this is one look that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and it’s easy to see why. Pared back construction and stripped down cuts feel entirely modern and appropriate, given the sheer breadth of visual clutter we are being fed in our information-hungry age these days. The big news for spring? A tectonic shift in power from the masculine, somewhat structured aesthetic that ruled the roost last summer, and into the embrace of a softer, more feminine silhouette. Think fluid, draped shapes at Céline, Hermès and Haider Ackermann, floaty obi belts at Loewe and MM6 Maison Martin Margiela, kimono-style cuts at The Row and Issey Miyake and soft asymmetric hemlines at Zero + Maria Cornejo. How to wear the look? Proportion, layering and a neutral colour palette is key. Bigger is better, so size up those jumpers, skirts and trousers. Sticking to calming shades

of white-on-white and pairing floaty wideleg trousers with a sleeveless tunic with an elongated hemline will channel your inner Zen and take this look in a fresh direction. And don’t forget the grooming – for the ultimate lesson in epicene beauty, stick to elegantly slicked-back hair and the softest touch of nude on the lips. 

KALYANA SPA Battersea Wo r d s K e l s e y D o r n f e l d

here is plenty to look forward to the winter, Christmas for T during example, but a downside is that the cold play havock with my skin. Usually I would tackle this issue by covering my face in deep moisturising moisturisers, but sometimes that just isn't enough and so enter the facial. Kalyana Spa, in the heart of Battersea, was the perfect destination for my skin rejuvenation. With its calming facilities plus a wide array of facial options, I knew I had come to the right place. Immediately I was welcomed by accommodating staff that were committed to creating an enjoyable experience from beginning to end. For my treatment I decided on the Na Tropical Fruit and Flower Facial, one of Kalyana’s specialties. It all started with cleansing and exfoliation using fresh papaya, tamarind extracts and seaweed leaving the skin with a fresh tingling sensation. The bulk of the treatment then revolved around a natural tightening mask. While the mask dried and tightened, I enjoyed a relaxing arm, hand, leg and foot massage that nearly lulled me into a deep slumber. One hour and twenty minutes later, my dry skin was transformed into a hydrated and brighter complexion complete with a relaxed state of mind. So, if you’re wanting to indulge yourself during these chilly winter months, a facial at Kalyana Spa is the perfect local ‘get-away’. u

SPRINT Perform sprint intervals for conditioning. A variety of protocols work, but if you’re pressed for time do ten uphill 40 meter sprints with 30 seconds rest. 

DE- STRESS The way you manage stress is so important. The hormone cortisol is released when you are under physical and mental stress. Eliminate anything that isn't improving the quality of your life. Try meditation or yoga, walking, SBC and more sex. 

F U L L B O DY SBC sessions are primed to illicit major fat loss from the tummy area through primal human movements like crawling and squatting. These movement will really fire your central nervous system in turn helping to shred fat. 

EXERCISE Single leg burpees and SBC crawl jumps will hit your legs in all the right places. Challenge yourself with different variations of exercises. Don’t bore your body because it will switch off. 

SUPPLEMENTS Drink green tea, it’s a great fat burning stimulant and has a myriad of health benefits. 

To shift fat on your legs eliminate excess oestrogen and toxins. Consume a high fibre diet along with cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale which contain diindolylmethane (or DIM) that helps your body get rid of excess oestrogen that could be making your legs bigger.

hen I arrived at Bibo, Putney’s newest Italian restaurant, I had one thing on my mind, pasta. Pasta is my Achilles heel. I absolutely love it, which is something I can thank my mum for. Growing up, her last minute meal was always the same: a big comforting bowl of al dente spaghetti drowned in a freshly made tomato sauce all topped with a mound of freshly grated Parmesan. It was time to repay her for the countless bowls of tasty spaghetti, so off we went to discover a bit of modern Italy in South West London.

Let me put things into context: my mother is one of the fussiest eaters and drinkers I know. To begin with she only drinks Chardonnay and getting her to drink Chablis (which is made from chardonnay grapes) is a challenge. She is also a vegetarian, doesn't like eggs and detests any kind of pungent cheese. Bibo had their work cut out. On arrival, Theo, the restaurant's maitre’d-cum-head sommelier, treated us to a glass of Franciacorta – Italy’s rather underrepresented equivalent to Champagne – and some earthy truffle aranchini (little balls of deep fried risotto). The Franciacorta had a delicate sweet finish that complemented the richness of the truffle so well that we

51 B&C_FEB15_Food_Review.indd 51

ordered another portion of both. So far so good, even for mum. I ordered the braised octopus with potato, chilli and lemon, which although powerfully seasoned with parsley came perfectly tender and balanced. Mum ordered the Puntarelle alla Romana. Puntarelle, otherwise known as ‘Rome’s favourite vegetable’, is basically a type of chicory and comes coated in a zesty anchovy sauce. The dish was slightly too simple, but tasted delicious nevertheless. For Primi we shared a plate of homemade tagliolini that came coated in lashings of butter sauce and was finished with thin shavings of white truffle on top. A simple dish, but definitely the highlight. Next came our mains. Mum opted for yet more pasta (I told you she liked it) and went for the filling dish of squash and ricotta ravioli doused in potent sage butter. I went classic and ordered a lightly fried fillet of Cornish plaice that came with chunks of beetroot, spinach, crisp strips of prosciutto and a tangy salsa verde. To finish, we shared the almond tart accompanied by sweet, syrupy prunes and crème fraiche. The generous portion of tart, which had more of a cake-like consistency, was beautifully sweet and a triumphant end to a phenomenal feast. Bibo, you nailed it.  146 Upper Richmond Road, SW15, 0208 780 0592; biborestaurant.com

Turkish Delight A private peninsula on the south coast of Turkey proves the ultimate spot for a family to relax in the sun Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e

A

s a mother of three, businesswoman and former model, Jasmine Guinness is a woman who needs a holiday, and knows it. When she explained that: ‘people who read on holiday always have a better time because it’s total escapism, both physically and mentally,’ she articulated my feelings exactly. Because what I want most from a holiday is a place to read. A beautiful place in the sun, where all my immediate physical needs are met – and those of my family – in order that I can be left in peace to read. But this is harder to achieve than it sounds. Anyone with children knows that for a holiday to be a holiday, you need to be able to reclaim your own brain for yourself, away from the incessant random demands made on it, and this is not something that happens easily. So we came to an all-inclusive resort. It might not be the most imaginative holiday option, but when your ambition is to find rest and relish in it, the promise of having no decisions to make for a full week is an exciting one. Letoonia in Fethiye, on Turkey’s south coast, is a vast hotel on a completely private peninsula. Set in absurdly lush surroundings (over 268 varieties of fauna, requiring near-constant watering in this dry part of the world) it’s a beautiful spot. Imagine pine trees, bougainvillea, jasmine and roses all vying for space and creating a wilderness of colour. There are three private beaches, four pools (one indoor), eight restaurants, nine bars, a spa, a kids' club and countless available sporting

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST activities. It’s almost a village in itself, a sprawling, hilly one with funicular railways and golf buggy taxis (flag them down when you’re flagging) connecting locations such as the pools and the beaches with the life-sized chess board, the theatre and the eateries, plus the archery course, the tennis courts and the water slides. But if this sounds big and busy, it doesn’t feel it. On our visit, in high season and during the school holidays,

THIS is a UTOPIAN, moneyfree SOCIETY where everything IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE accommodation is at full capacity but still there is no crowding, queueing or scrambling for pool loungers. Everything is quiet and seamless. The all-inclusive ethos creates a utopian, money-free society where everything is always available to everybody and there’s no competitiveness or conspicuous consumption (nobody seems to overeat or drink despite the bottomless plates and glasses, which makes a convincing case for the goodness of human nature). We walk round the village unencumbered by anything as pedestrian as a wallet. Accommodation is in bungalows with carved wooden details designed by award-winning Turkish architect Nail

Çakırhan. Our two bedroom suite is comfortable and spacious, with a shady balcony offering impressive sea views, so quite quickly we settle into a form of routine, loosely based around meals. Buffet dining suits us and the largest restaurant is situated at the tip of the peninsula, by the lighthouse, offering sea views in all directions. Options are endless and alongside all the high class if fairly standard international fare is a good selection of Turkish meze – every day brings a delicious new twist on the aubergine – and there’s enough variety not to ever get bored. There are two a la carte restaurants too, one of them offering a curious fashioning of Japanese

food and the other a beachside fish venue, but we stick to the buffets with their wide array and child-friendly setup. We quickly discover our favourite place for lunch – on the beach, where salads and Turkish flatbreads offer light options alongside a chilled glass of wine. The children choose pasta with tomato sauce every day without exception, fully believing themselves in culinary heaven, and we are delighted that the ice cream stall opens punctually after lunch every day and then closes for the rest of the afternoon. Days pass in a haze of swimming – the pool? Or the beach? Which pool and which beach? – and we enjoy everything from the waterslides that drop into the sea to the pedalos and rowing boats in the bay, as well as the elegant bananaleaf style hammocks that dot around the resort. One day we take a trip on Letoonia’s luxury yacht, which takes us around the peninsula, stopping to swim in clear turquoise waters and to shop in the market. In the evenings we enjoy all-singing, all-dancing performances from the in-house amateur dramatics group, whose enthusiasm and fantastic costumes fill the village amphitheatre with energetic shows every night. So, the reading count went well. Not only did I reread Jayne Eyre but I caught up with Meg Wolitzer and Philip Roth too. In terms of physical and mental escapism, I certainly had my fill. u Special offer for Letoonia bookings before end of January 2015 - 7 nights all inclusive including flights from £504.00 at letoonia.com

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

Cracking Code Since September 2014, ‘coding’ has replaced ICT (information and communications technology) on the new National Curriculum Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

I

n its simplest terms, coding is telling a computer what you want it to do. This involves typing in step-by-step commands for the computer to follow. It’s often likened to learning a foreign language and it’s certainly double-Dutch to most parents. But in a world where coding powers our digital world, where every website, smartphone app, computer program, calculator and even microwave relies on code in order to operate, we all – but particularly children - need to understand it. The coders of the future will be the architects and builders of the digital age. Kathryn Parsons, chief executive and co-founder of Decoded, a company in the heart of east London’s Tech City which runs Code in a Day courses, says: 'We desperately need digital creators – talent – for the UK to be a global player in tech. Coding is the new building block for the world. There are lots of intelligent, young people out there but only a fraction of them are learning to code on the web. Bringing coding alive is essential, not just in the classroom but also by parents sitting down with their kids and learning together. Whether you are six or 60, this has a place in everyone’s lives. Coding is the new literacy.' In west London, two enterprising women are bringing coding into the classrooms of Notting Hill. BlueSHIFT Coding was set up by Heather Lyons, a web designer and Elizabeth Tweedale, an architect, designer and computer scientist. Both have young children and a missionary zeal to get kids coding. 'Our aim is to enable young people to become creative users of technology

CODERS OF THE FUTURE will be the ARCHITECTS and BUILDERS of a DIGITAL AGE rather than passive consumers,” says Tweedale, a 30-year-old American. 'We are not trying to create a nation of computer scientists but in future we all need to have some understanding of computation,' she says. BlueSHIFT Coding is already running classes at Chepstow House School, Wetherby and Falcon School for Girls, as well as after-school courses at the company’s studio in Monmouth Road, and will be launching new classes in Kensal Rise after Christmas. Tweedale and Lyons have developed their own approach to teaching code to children between the ages of 5-12. Tweedale explains that, traditionally, computer science has only been taught

71 B&C_Feb15_Education.indd 71

at university level and the teaching for younger children has often been a 'watered down' version. 'That just doesn’t work for children,' she says. 'It’s too slow. Have you ever seen a three-year-old work an iPad? They’re so quick, they aren’t held back by preconceived ideas.' BlueSHIFT Coding is all about 'taking creativity in all forms in order for children to solve problems', says Tweedale. She describes a favourite project in the lessons– ‘Teddy Hacking’. This is when the children bring in old, no longer loved soft toys and turn them into robots by adding sensors, LEDs and other micro-controls. It’s great fun. “The huge challenge is finding teachers that can teach this,” says Tweedale. From now on, KS1 (Key Stage1) children will have to understand core elements of computer science, while those in KS2 must be able to understand and edit code and KS3 pupils must learn to be able to write their own code. At the latter stages, the teacher will need training in computer science. There is currently a huge shortage, Tweedale says. Despite the dearth of qualified teachers there are plenty of initiatives for keen coders. Founders4Schools recently held an Appathon UK to get students to design and create an app prototype – the top three were then coded by university students and the winners were presented with their winning apps in the House of Commons last November. And Code Club, a nationwide network of volunteer-led after school coding clubs, now has more than 2,000 clubs up and running. u blueshiftcoding.com

ART DECO is back in vogue Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S

Taking a tour of 1920s style

A

rt Deco was once the only style of choice for any Londoner wanting to build or refurbish a home. But since its heyday during the 1920s and 30s its influence has retreated significantly and is only felt in a few spheres of London life. So widespread has this withdrawal been that RIBA recently mourned the number of Art Deco buildings being demolished, but even so London is still littered with buildings from the period including former factories, garages, offices, public buildings, tube and railway stations, hotels, theatres, cinemas, cafes, pubs, shops and, of course, homes. Individual Art Deco houses are everywhere from Purley in the

south to Highgate in the north, but it is the surviving apartment developments that bear testimony to the Art Deco ambitions of so many architects. Remember that in their day Charles Raymond Hood, Robert Atkinson and Harry Weedon were once as famous as Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and Zaha Hadid are today. But can you still buy their designs? There are 250 Art

101 STYLE BIBLE.indd 101

Deco properties for sale in London at the moment ranging from a £11 million, fourbedroom apartment in St John's Wood at the top of the market to a £240,000 one-bedroom apartment within Du Cane Court in Balham at the bottom. But as a quick look at these properties proves, it is difficult to pin down exactly what the Art Deco style is. Its influences are numerous and varied and include, for starters, the decorative arts of the late 17th century, Cubism, Bauhaus, Ancient Egypt, Japan, Africa and even ancient Mayan art. But what makes it easy to spot from the street is that nothing else looked like it, either before or after its nadir. The most famous example is Florin Court within the Charterhouse Square gated community in EC1, which was built in 1936 and has been used many times as the home of Poirot in the eponymous TV series. There studio apartments sell for between £250,000 and £300,000. But while its properties are sought after, it is within the world of interiors that interest in the style is gaining a new momentum. And it’s mainly because developers building prime properties in London are increasingly turning to the Art Deco palette when creating interiors. Interior designer Anna GraceDavidson of Anna Casa Interiors thinks this is because it's “both glamorous and timeless at the same time”, a quality that appeals to anyone trying to sell a property with a high price tag to a wide range of potential buyers. She also thinks it utilises the type of geometry that the human eye is naturally attracted to, although she attributes its more recent rise in popularity to the recent remake of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel The Great Gatsby into a film. "I think people like it because the style's not too heavy, not too minimalistic and you can mix it with other styles without it jarring," she says. And as Jay Gatsby says in the novel, when asked if you can repeat the past: “Of course you can, of course you can!”

s a child if someone had asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up the answer would, almost certainly, have been anything but an estate agent. The list of vocations I felt I’d like to pursue ranged from marine biologist to solicitor to rock star. After failing to achieve some of the results I had hoped for at A-level, my father even suggested I consider a knitting course at a certain university where the girl/boy ratio was 5:1, which I’m sure had nothing to do with his thought process. Dismissing the knitting course wasn’t easy but by then I had decided that my true skill set would be best utilised pursuing the career of being a surf bum, which I took to like a duck to water. Eventually I began to grow up and, like many of my peers, fell into estate agency. At first, I still had a plan in the back of my mind that I would eventually make enough money to be a surf bum for life, or maybe a rock star. However, slowly but surely I grew to love the job I had fallen into. I have now been an estate agent for nearly fifteen years, split almost evenly between Chelsea and Battersea, I have experienced some very good times and of course some incredibly tough patches which felt like they would never end. Looking back, these bad stretches rarely lasted too long but certainly felt like an eternity at the time, and I always felt I’d learnt far more than during the more buoyant periods. Whether the market is good or bad, being an estate agent puts

you right in the thick of it. Helping clients through these times is hugely rewarding, whether it is achieving a great price, negotiating an onward situation, giving hard but honest advice, or just helping with ideas about how they can extend their home to benefit their lifestyle without compromising the saleability, should they have to sell or rent. I also have estate agency to thank for some of my closest friends who I met through either helping them buy or sell. I have now been with Douglas & Gordon for coming on seven years and although I’m bound to sound biased I can’t help but admire how they manage to balance traditional values as a company whilst always thinking ahead in a rapidly changing market. I feel very privileged to run the Battersea Park office for Douglas & Gordon and have seen it change from a somewhat lesser desired location, “south of the river”, to a thriving property hotspot with hordes of Chelsea refugees now setting up home here. I have always enjoyed the fact that the majority of our clients tend to upsize/ downsize within the Battersea Park area, unless they are moving out to the country, which is a testament to how much people enjoy living here. I’m lucky enough to enjoy Battersea Park on a regular basis with my dog and family… who are all delighted that I didn’t take up that knitting course.

he annual Balham Nursery Christmas Evening held on Thursday 18th December for the children, their families, friends and staff to raise money for the school and nominated charities was a huge success, with local estate agents – Aspire – once again pledged their support by donating a brand new iPad Air for the evening’s raffle. The event supported two local charities – The Lily Foundation, which seeks to give hope, answers and support to children and families affected by Mitochondrial Disease for which there is no cure. One of the children at the nursery was diagnosed this year with the disease when she was 18 months old. The other charity is Klevis Kola – which runs nine different projects that aim to support refugee and asylum seeking families in Wandsworth, Lambeth and Merton. Clifford Harvey, director of Aspire’s Balham office comments: “We are delighted to continue to be involved with the Balham Nursery Charity Evening and consider both charities to be worthy recipients. Many of our staff live locally and all work within their local community and therefore supporting local schools is, we believe, a vital part of our role as a local business.” Aspire Balham 020 8673 6111; aspire.co.uk

The INSIDE SCOOP of NEWS in your area Mortgage myths cause families to miss out on their dream home

M

ortgage experts warn that mortgage myths are leading house-hunters across London and the south east to miss out on their dream home by failing to take advantage of the lowest base interest rates in more than a generation. The Bank of England has held the base rate at 0.5 per cent since March 2009, and it has generated remarkable opportunities for customers in the mortgage market. But financial advisors are increasingly concerned that house-hunters are failing to make the most of a golden situation because many mistakenly believe that extra application checks introduced under the Mortgage Market Review (MMR) have

endors need to consider who is going to be buying their property and dress it accordingly. Things to remember are: what stage of life they were in when they bought it? and why the property appealed to them? The market has seen an influx of more particular buyers so showing your home in the best light to the most likely buyer should yield a prompt result. If the garden sold it to you then make it look stunning. If the third bedroom showed you that you could grow as a family in your new home and is now a dumping ground, then clear it out and dress it accordingly. The reasons you bought your house are the most likely reasons your buyer will too.

he last half of 2014 proved to be an interesting period in our local property market with a huge surge in stock levels as the market checked itself and the restructuring of the SDLT thresholds was announced in early December. Stock levels are dropping again though and we predict that the spring market will come early this year with the upcoming election on everyone’s minds. The overall feeling is that if you are looking to move, buyers are going to be most active in the first three months of 2015 so get those gardens tidy and touch up the paintwork to take advantage of a busy New Year period in south west London.

locked them out. Adam Champion of New Homes Group – which advises customers of Linden Homes – said that now is the moment for house-hunters to buy. He said the situation had led to lenders bringing out impressive new products, with savvy customers with hard-earned deposits or those using Help to Buy being able to now pick up three-year fixed rate mortgages at 2.99 per cent. “The changes from MMR were intended to root out bad borrowing but they have frightened off customers who are perfectly able to afford a mortgage,” Adam explained. lindenhomes.co.uk

s popularity for the area has surged among families and young professionals, the high street has flourished and we’ve seen Southfields become home to a wide variety of commercial occupiers and tenants as they compete to be a part of the upmarket village it is becoming. PROPERTY | AWARDS

The ESTAS awards Why is customer service so important for estate agents? Any agent not providing excellent service will get found out very quickly, especially in this day and age of social media. To help agents we’ve designed an auto Tweet facility so agents can get their positive feedback comments straight out on social media networks creating their own online ‘customer care’ PR campaigns. Why have the ESTAs joined forces with the Absolutely London titles this year? We just want to spread The ESTAs message to as many quality agents as possible and Absolutely has lots of those! They are just the type of agents who would benefit most from taking part. How can members of the public vote/ rate their agent? Your agent needs to be registered with us before you can rate them so if they’re not let them know and email us via our website.

Absolutely Property is joined by… SIMON BROWN

Why did you decide to start the ESTAS? My wife Sarah used to work for a local agent and it wasn’t until then that I realised how hard the job was. There are so many different factors to every deal and so many problems that can cause chains to fail. I realised then that most estate and letting agencies have a reputation they really don’t deserve. So I decided to start an award

Has it grown over the years? Absolutely! It’s gone from strength to strength because the concept is simple and the benefits to agents start as soon as they sign up. The ESTAS logo on an agents’ website sends a clear message to new customers that the agent believes in providing the best service and they’re happy to prove it. As part of the competition process we also provide detailed client feedback reports to all agents taking part which enables them to measure their performance, highlights their strengths and weaknesses and helps them improve their service.

The 12th annual ESTAS ceremony takes place at the Hilton Park Lane on 17th April 2015. The awards will be presented by TV Property Expert Phil Spencer.

Phil Spencer

Founder of The ESTAS, Estate & Letting Agent Awards

scheme which recognises agents for the levels of customer service they provided their clients. However, I didn’t want to go down the route of a judging panel. I think if you’re going to judge any company in any industry on service the best people to rate that experience are the customers themselves. We managed to get Phil Spencer, the TV Property Expert, involved so in 2004 The ESTAS were born.

How can estate agents enter? Agents can register by completing a simple entry form at www.theestas.com.

Flats in London: 10, St Stephen’s Gardens, Notting Hill

T

his one bedroom apartment is not unique in London even if (for anyone outside the capital), its asking price of £850,000 might be. Selling agent Gareth Kelly of Marsh & Parsons is consequently puzzled that it’s been viewed 5,000 times on Zoopla since he was instructed to sell it two months ago. Gareth, who is sales manager at his company’s Notting Hill office, has shown 40 people around the property and says its location, large floor-to-ground windows and high quality interior finish make it popular. Also, he says one unusual feature is that it’s a raised-floor apartment, which helps give it the feel of a first floor flat when it isn’t one. “The road is also a cul-de-sac, so it’s quieter than the surrounding streets,” he says. “And this is a really massive flat for a one bed in this area.” But when Gareth says ‘location’ is a factor, what he really means is ‘Notting Hill’. It’s one of those iconic London areas that has effortlessly become uber fashionable over the past three decades, a rise that’s been helped of course by Richard Curtis’s eponymous 1999

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

MOST POPULAR.indd 136

film starring Hugh Grant. And St Stephen’s Gardens has a film connection of its own. A property a few doors down from No.10 was a film location for Michael Caine’s 1966 film Alfie. Also, talking of celebrities, until a few years ago Stella McCartney owned a house in an adjacent street and Ruby Wax lives nearby too. People like this are drawn to this neighbourhood of Notting Hill because it’s the best of many worlds – near Portobello Road but far away enough not to be too mobbed during the annual carnival but not far from Bayswater and also walking distance of three tube stations on two different lines. St Stephen’s Gardens is also well placed for Notting Hill’s best eateries and places to hang out including Tom Conran’s champagne and oyster bars, The Cow and The Westbourne, both of which are just around the corner. On Chepstow Road there’s The Napoleon Bonaparte – famous for being pop band Blur’s favoured pub during the 1990s. Another reason for the property’s popularity on Zoopla is its price. Those outside London might baulk at £850,000 for a one bedroom apartment but in Notting Hill it represents reasonable value and onebedders closer to Bayswater and Notting Hill Gate can fetch up to £1.2 million. “The market around here, like the rest of

prime central London, cooled off rapidly this summer but recently it’s picked up again and we’ve been really busy – so I’m confident that we will find a buyer for this apartment fairly soon,” he says. For more information about the property call Gareth on: 020 7313 2592.
