EDITOR’S letter

can’t believe I’m writing my Editor’s letter for the March issue already. Excuse the cliché, but doesn’t time fly? The latter half of 2014 whooshed by, Christmas was nothing more than a boozy, bloated blur, and January well, did we just put two fingers up and decide to skip it? Granted, I am writing this in February, but as it’s probably my least favourite month of the year, I think I might just bypass talking about it altogether. Let’s talk about March instead. The gateway to summer and the official sponsor of spring, March is a month when everything just gets better. The clocks goes forward, evenings get longer, the weather gets warmer, people begin to look healthier after months of suffering from a vitamin D deficiency and social lives pick up. I can’t wait to feel the first ray of lukewarm sun on my arm, head to Surrey to play my first game of tennis, and grab an impromptu after work drink and actually stand outside without shivering. Ok, I may be getting a little ahead of myself – it’s not August after all – but the promise of warmer weather is there nonetheless, and I can’t wait. With the warming of weather, events

7 B&C_Mar_EDS_LETTER.indd 7

and activities take to London’s plethora of parks; flick to page 12 for what’s on in London this month. We get summer ready with tips from the experts and top workout essentials on the Fitness Confidential spread, page 40. Ready to book your summer holiday? Turn to page 52 for Caribbean inspiration from Curtain Bluff, Antigua. We also take a moment with The Who front man, Roger Daltrey, to talk tunes, Townshend and what’s to come (page 16). And discover the phenomena that is Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which has taken to the stage with uber talented Tamsin Greig fronting the show, page 15. Enjoy the issue and see you next month, when things begin to properly hot up. Romy. ◆

ARTS & CULTURE / REVIEW than is strictly professional. The story occurs over the course of a single day during which each woman is forced to deal with problems that push them to the very brink of sanity, from being abandoned by their boyfriends to finding grenades under their bed. The play is dotted with musical numbers, some of which are inspired and others that seem to hamper the action. Candela’s ‘Model Behaviour’ for instance, perfectly captures and sends up that friend we all have who calls twenty times in a night leaving messages: ‘What was the name of that cheese that I like?’ and Haydn Gwynne’s brilliantly dramatic and ominous performance in ‘On the Verge’ has the audience in fits but some of the more sentimental tunes such as ‘Lovesick’ and ‘Island’ drag a little. Tamsin Greig’s excellent performance as the scorned Pepa provides the heart of the show and is almost universally hilarious.

THEATRE REVIEW

Vida Loca

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown boasts a stellar cast, a compelling soundtrack and plenty of laughs

I

Wr i tt e n b y j e f f r e y l a n e Directed by Bartlett Sher

f you’ve ever watched a film by Pedro Almodóvar, you’ll know that they don’t exactly scream ‘musical adaptation.’ As a result, I approached the West End version of the show with some trepidation, especially since it’s Broadway incarnation had been met with such thorny write-ups. Luckily, I was in for a pleasant surprise. Set in 1980s Madrid, the play centres around Pepa (played by Tamsin Greig), an actress whose relationship with her regular co-star Iván has come to an abrupt and unexpected end sending her into a tailspin of sleeping pills and despair. She is joined

on the verge by Iván’s ex-wife, Lucia (Haydn Gwynne) who was driven into an institution by the loss of her husband and has emerged 20 years later seeking restitution; Pepa’s best friend, scatty model Candela (Anna Skellern), who is worried her new boyfriend may be a terrorist using her flat as a base of operations; uptight and aggressively virginal Marisa (Seline Hizli), the fiancé of Carlos, Iván and Lucia’s son, who is trying to organise her new life whilst dealing with her hostile mother-in-law and harbouring major doubts of her own; finally, Paulina (Willemijn Verkaik), Lucia’s self-possessed and forceful lawyer who seems to have more of a vested interest in the proceedings

15 B&C_MARCH15_THEATRE_REVIEW.indd 15

PEPA provides the heart OF THE SHOW Haydn Gwynne, too, is truly exceptional as the borderline psychotic Lucia, who she mainly plays for laughs, making her moments of tragedy and truth all the more poignant. Overall, this colourful and unexpected musical remains true to its source material in all the wit and female empowerment it brings to the table, bolstered by a cast of seriously talented women and a fun, feel-good soundtrack. u by Catherine Hales

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey talks exclusively to Absolutely about music, charity and why the best is yet to come I n t e r v i e w c at h e r i n e h a l e s

I

t feels both impossible and redundant to try to introduce Roger Daltrey. His career with The Who (you may have heard of them) is the stuff of legends and is now in its fiftieth year, the band having been started by Daltrey in 1964 with John Entwistle and Pete Townshend. After the original drummer quit the band, Keith Moon joined up creating the ensemble that would go on to become the best (and loudest) rock and roll band in the world. Known for his energy onstage and his powerful vocals, not to mention his now iconic microphone spin, Daltrey and the other members of The Who skyrocketed to fame in the 1960s propelled by his charisma and extraordinary voice and by the undeniable genius of Pete Townshend’s songwriting. Although not always a peaceful partnership, the combination of Daltrey and Townshend has sustained The Who’s success through the tragic loss of two of its members and has seen them embark on their UK tour, The Who Hits 50!, followed by their US tour of the same name next year. Their last UK date is in London at the O2 on 17th and 18th December and

when I ask why they have chosen this venue, Mr Daltrey’s answer is immediate, ‘The O2 is the best place to play in the UK as there are so few big arenas. It’s one of the only places designed for music and even though it can fit 20,000 there, the audience isn’t that far from the stage.’ It’s an odd sensation speaking to Roger Daltrey on the phone. On the one hand, I am aware to the point of distraction that I am talking to one of the greatest rock singers of all time but on the other, he comes across as so down to earth and lacking in airs and graces that I feel put at my ease. ‘The only other places than the parks are Wembley which is horrible and the Royal Albert Hall,’ Roger (Roger!) continues, ‘but to play to the same amount of people in two nights at the O2 would take two weeks there.’ Born in Hammersmith and raised in Acton, Daltrey’s voice retains its west London roots and no nonsense tone whilst simultaneously drawing you in, making you want to know him. Even over the phone, his magnetism and sincerity is undeniable. ‘Its written in the songs and you can’t fake the music,’ he says when I ask him how he maintains the energy on stage that has become his trademark. ‘As

I GET on stage, I’m 20 years old. I NEVER GOT PAST 20 years old TO BE HONEST

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE I ALWAYS knew it would last... I KNEW IN MY BONES that we would KEEP GOING soon as we start doing that we’ll be done, we’ll stop forever.’ He continues, ‘When I get on stage I’m 20 years old. I never got past 20 years old to be honest [laughs]. The mirror lies!’ When I attempt to probe into the reasons behind the unprecedented success and longevity of The Who, Daltrey is quick to assign the credit. ‘We’ve been very lucky but its also down to Pete. The style Pete writes in is classically based even though its rock and roll and it hasn’t really aged. The words are thoughtful and insightful, they speak to everyone no matter what age and Pete had the courage, the balls, to express the things that other people weren’t saying but what everyone was feeling.’ He adds, without a hint of false modesty or self-consciousness, ‘It’s what music should be.’ I make the mistake of suggesting that perhaps his audience has aged with him, a notion that he is quick to rebut. ‘It’s this lazy journalistic thing of writing and talking about how old everyone has got, “Oh, wrinkles!” It doesn’t matter! In 1964, playing at the Marquee Club we were playing with people like Muddy Waters and Smokey Robinson, all in their 50s and the very best at what they did. Rock and roll’s the same, with the best people age doesn’t matter.’ In truth, age does not seem to have slowed Roger Daltrey down one bit. As well as extensive touring and producing new material with Townshend, The Who

frontman is also deeply involved with the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity he founded 25 years ago. ‘When I started the charity I never dreamed it would get to this point. We started it because that age group are always forgotten. They worked out that children need teddies and toys, adults prefer a lounger and TV but this whole group ended up so isolated.’ As he gets into his stride, the passion in his voice is evident. ‘Being told you have this disease, especially in your teens, is psychologically devastating and we worked out that the best thing for a young person diagnosed with cancer is to introduce them to other people in the same situation. Fifteen years ago we had four units, now we have 28.’ The charity has also become known for its fantastic concerts held annually at the Royal Albert Hall and which have attracted the very best of the entertainment industry. This year’s lineup included Ed Sheeran, Suede and The Cure. ‘The TCT is 25 years old. Its the 15th anniversary of the live shows at the Royal Albert Hall and 50 years of the Who. That’s an achievement.’ I have to agree. At the mention of the band’s anniversary, I ask Roger whether or not he has plans for after the tour. ‘We’re making another

19 B&C_MAR15_ROGER_DALTREY.indd 19

record at the moment – for some reason we feel revitalised!’ he says, laughing. Did he ever imagine at the beginning The Who would still be going fifty years on? His answer surprises me. ‘I always knew it would last. Even though sometimes it felt like it would end in a week, I knew in my bones that we would keep going.’ Again, there is no lack of deference to his partner in music when he speaks of the band’s continuing success. ‘I always say this: Pete has the intellect to write the best music he’s ever done. He’s like those genius composers who only got better.’ Then, with an impish note in his voice he confides, ‘We’re not going away, much to some people’s annoyance. We’ll still be up there, making that racket we’ve become famous for.’ Well after our phone call is over, a particular phrase from the interview rings in my mind: ‘That’s the spirit of music - no one’s going through the motions.’ As I think about it, I realise that’s what has made them great and is what people watching The Who see today; age doesn’t matter in music when passion, focus and brilliance endure. And that, of course, is just so rock and roll.  Peninsula Square, SE10; theo2.com

sking a more youthful version of myself: ‘Do you own a pair of A sensible shoes?’, you’d have gotten: ‘Pah!’ or a ‘Hahaha! I don’t do sensible shoes’, or something similarly nauseating. And I didn’t. I wore Converse or heels. A trip to Clarks didn’t appeal (too school-y), Russell and Bromley wasn’t cool for flats then, I hated trainers, I couldn’t afford Ferragamo and I never got into shop-lifting, so I didn’t own a pair. Luckily, the jobs I had between 18 and 25 – as a fashion stylist, a journalist, and also at a nightclub – didn’t require them, but at that stage, shoes and clothing were to look fab, not to feel comfortable. My aunt Beatrix reminded me the other day of a pair of particularly wooden-looking, gold, curly-toed

I COULDN’T afford Ferragamo AND I NEVER got into shoplifting, SO I DIDN’T OWN A PAIR. Indian men’s sandals I was wearing once. She had asked if they were comfortable, and apparently I had replied: ‘No, it’s like wearing devils’ tampons, but aren’t they beautiful?!’ I can’t recall saying this but don’t doubt rhetoric like that sticks in the memory, so I’m happy to concede. These days I shy away from devils’ tampons. Having worn so many in my youth, I now have an irreparably damaged back. That said, nothing in fashion excites me more than having my mind changed. Clever British designers such as Nicholas Kirkwood and Church’s have honed androgyny in women’s shoes to such elegant perfection that I can’t decide whether to treat myself to a pair of Kirkwood’s metallic azure leather loafers [ £295, pictured above] or Church’s studded Brogues. No one said life was easy…  ● V I O L E T N AY L O R - L E Y L A N D Stylist and owner of fancy dress boutique Violet’s Box;

on’t be fooled by the spa LONDON in Wimbledon, it D may be located inside the local leisure centre, but it’s as luxurious and tranquil as any other local or central London spa. The large thermal spa holds different hot and cold areas to while away the hours and includes a steam room, sauna, ice bucket shower and Jacuzzi. The peace of this area means you could happily spend an entire day just enjoying these facilities. Celebrating its 1st anniversary this year, the spa’s latest range of own products and treatments are designed to give clients the gold star treatment. If you go, do opt for a massage. I chose to give the 90-minute Spa LONDON Gold Signature treatment, which included an all-over body scrub, foot washing ritual and a quick refreshing shower, and this is before the massage even begins. Then comes a deep tissue massage, which incorporates traditional hot Thai herb compresses and lymphatic drainage movements on my entire body to gently release inner heat and generate a harmonious flow of energy. With a final slick of Gold dry body oil and a stress relieving massage, you'll walk away with fully relaxed muscles and properly renewed skin. u

ABSOLUTELY / PROMOTION ANDY MURRAY uses it to TONE UP FOR INTERNATIONAL TENNIS, while WIMBLEDON locals use it to SUSTAIN BUSY LIFESTYLES and manage STRESS

This Year’s

HOT HABIT

Things got too much, so Raj tried hot yoga. Andy Murray uses it to tone up for international tennis; numerous Ironman competitors use it to stave off injury; and hundreds of Wimbledon locals use it to sustain busy lifestyles and manage stress. Raj opened the yoga studio on Elm Grove in 2010 and it changed his life, which means the 30 day challenge can help change yours too. As a teacher and front of house, Raj has created the community he has always dreamed of: a calm oasis for local residents and workers to come and get fit, relieve the pressures of day to day life and improve their quality of life, all in a stylish hot yoga studio. In 2015 the studio launched a whole range of innovative classes: one hour sessions, candlelit lessons or classic hot yoga done to music. There's something for everyone, so take on 30 days and you could really change your life. u

Forget the New Year Detox and Dry January, quick fixes are over so try something to keep you in shape for good

F

itness and diet fads are hard to stick to. Apparently this is because it takes 28 days to develop a habit, which explains why most of us give up before the month is out. The 30 day challenge isn’t a fad or a gimmick, it’s been thoughtfully measured to ensure that, if stuck to, you make a significant change. Here at Bikram Yoga Wimbledon, we are promoting our own 30 day challenge to help you get fit, toned and stronger, all while reducing your stress levels.

Now a regular yogi and founder of Bikram Yoga Wimbledon, Raj Sharma, was once a burnt out maître d’ at a busy central London restaurant. His job was socially and physically draining and the hours were long, but Raj had to stay calm, collected and friendly despite feeling stressed, tired and pressured. Describing his time working in the West End as ‘punishing, busy and hectic, with always another problem to solve whilst trying to smile,’ Raj's worklife sounds all too familiar to most 21st century Londoners.

Q&A

A DAY IN THE LIFE of a BOOM cycle instructor

Talk me through your typical day I’ve always been an early riser. I’ll get up around 5:30AM and will either go for a run or take some quiet meditation time. After I shower, I have breakfast, which is the same everyday (oatmeal with blueberries and a cup of Earl Grey), then I’ll walk my dog. Once I’m back at the house, my work day formally begins. I run two websites, write for some others, do some social media for other brands, some consultancy and am generally working towards total global domination on any given day, so my ideal afternoons are the ones where I get to just write. ◆ Do you teach BOOM Cycle every day? I teach five days a week. It doesn’t take much for me to get pumped for class ‘cause I genuinely love it. I’m a very energetic person so by the time my class rolls around, I’m happy for the chance to burn off some of that energy and it’s just a nice change of pace from all the sitting at a computer that I do.

How do you feel after a class? Absolutely PUMPED! There is nothing better than an endorphin high. I love seeing people sweaty and smiling. ◆

What do you do besides BOOM?

Hey Stella!

I run my websites, bangsandabun.com and spikesandheels. com. I have a podcast you can find on my website, I write and read a lot, run a lot (training for London Marathon), spend time with my dog and catch up with friends. ◆

What do you like to do in the evening? I try to stop working on whatever it is I’m doing on that day by around 8pm and wind down. This year I’m trying to get into reading more literature so that’s taking up a lot of my evening time right now and I find it’s the perfect way to relax after a long day. ◆

HOT CROSS BUNS

CONFIDENTIAL

Recipe by Roy Levy of Gail’s Artisan Bakery

Tasty happenings, new openings and hot cross buns

INGREDIENTS The Buns: • 20g fresh yeast • 1 tsp caster sugar • 400g plain flour • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon • 0.5 tsp freshly ground nutmeg • 1 tsp mixed spice • 200ml whole milk • 70g caster sugar • 1 large egg • 70g soft unsalted butter • 40g sultanas • 40g dry currants • 40g dried unsweetened cranberries • 70g mixed peel • 0.5 tsp fine sea salt

W o r d s R O M Y VA N D E N B R O E K E

Cross Topping: • 200g plain flour • 230g icing sugar • 2 tbsp olive oil • 3 tbsp milk Syrup: • 300g caster sugar • 200g water • 1 whole nutmeg • 1 whole star anise • 1 whole clove • 0.5 vanilla pod

01 In a large mixing bowl melt yeast with a tablespoon of whole milk and a teaspoon of caster sugar. 02 In a separate bowl, sieve the flour with the spices. 03 Add the spiced flour to the yeast. Keep adding the rest of the milk, the sugar and egg. 04 Begin to bind the mixture together using your hands, then add the butter a chunk at a time whilst kneading the dough. 05 Continue kneading until you get a smooth, shiny dough. 06 Add the salt and fruits and continue kneading. 07 Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave at room temperature for 1.5 hours, until it doubles in size. 08 Divide into 20 pieces, roll into shape on a surface to create smooth buns. 09 Arrange on a baking tray lined with a baking paper. Cover the tray with a clean tea towel and leave to rise. 10 When the buns are ready make an eggwash by whisking 1 whole egg, 1 egg yolk and a teaspoon of milk. Brush the buns and leave to dry out for 10 minutes. Brush again. 11 Pre heat the oven to 200°C. Making The X Topping: 01 Using a hand whisk, combine all ingredients into a smooth paste. 02 Fill a piping bag with the topping mixture, cut a small hole. 03 Pipe thin crosses on top of the buns on the tray and pop it into the oven. The Syrup: 01 Put all the syrup ingredients in a small saucepan and over a low heat bring to a boil. Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat and simmer until you have a syrupy consistency. 02 Remove from the heat and fish the spices out. 03 Once the buns are ready, brush them with the hot syrup. 04 Leave to cool for 15 minutes before serving. ◆

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW

WHILE THE BRIOCHE bun was sweet and fresh, THE FALAFEL hadn’t been DEEP FRIED SO WAS mushy and LACKED BITE

Fully Loaded From juicy burgers to sticky cookie puddings, Wimbledon’s Hot Pink does good ‘bad’ food Wo r d s E l i z a b e t h H u t t o n

S

o, let me start off by explaining the fact that I always order my salad with a side of chips. Yes, I’m one of those, someone with good intentions but terrible willpower. That’s how I knew I had to try out Wimbledon’s very popular ‘healthy grill’, Hot Pink. Taking the deep fried foods of America, Hot Pink manages to give them a healthy twist using seasonal produce and high quality farm meat. At this point I should probably point out that in no way is the burger at Hot Pink healthy, but instead of American junk food where the provenance of the meat is unknown, you can be safe in the knowledge that the ingredients here are the best they can be.

The diner-style restaurant has an atmosphere to match: it's chilled out with friendly staff, reclaimed wooden walls and comfy red leather seats, which are perfect for slumping in to after you've stuffed yourself with burgers and fries. I was informed that the house sauce was a must-try, so to start we ordered a generous portion of grilled halloumi cubes with the aforementioned spicy pink relish for dipping. The combination of salty cheese and piquant dip was spot on and completely addictive. Next up were our mains. Feeling as angelic as I did when I arrived, I decided to go for the falafel burger rather than the regular because, as the menu proudly stated, it's under 400 calories. In all my virtue, I'll admit that

49 B&C_March15_Food_Review.indd 49

I ordered wrong. While the brioche bun was sweet and fresh, the falafel hadn’t been deep fried so was mushy in texture and ultimately lacked bite, much to my dining companion's dismay (she ordered the juicy 3oz Hot Pink beef burger). The regular came covered with American cheese and smothered in Hot Pink’s secret sauce, and the bites I stole were meaty and delicious. To compensate for my slightly disappointing main, I chose to fill up on tasty side dishes instead. The coleslaw was coated in wholegrain mustard and low-fat mayonnaise and was perfectly creamy and crunchy. It worked perfectly with the sage and garlic coated sweet potato fries, which were lightly roasted so that the natural sweetness was still there. A perfect, satisfying alternative to even the most extreme of chip-cravings. With a dessert menu that includes an award-winning brownie, our order could have been a predictable one, but instead we chose to succumb to our more gluttonous side and order the sweet and sticky toffee cookie dough pots. Topped with both vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, this was one guilty pleasure I could not resist. It may not be a place pushing boundaries or reinventing the wheel, but by jove, Wimbledon is lucky to have such a restaurant on its doorstep. Check it out.

HOME from HOME Absolutely discovers five star home comforts at Antigua’s Curtain Bluff Wo r d s G E M M A I S T E E D

utting out majestically over the cliff edge above the crashing waves, Curtain Bluff is the Manderley of the Caribbean. Built in the 1960s by American horticulturist Howard Hulford, it nestles impressively amongst the rainforest on the southern coast of Antigua, dominating the ‘bluff’, or rocky promontory, upon which it sits. And while it operates a five-star hotel, it also doubles as a home for the Hulford family, giving it the sense of a glamorous 50s house party with timeless appeal. Now a 72-roomed home from home, it attracts a whole range of celebrities, from Eric Clapton to Giorgio Armani, all looking for it’s trademark simple, elegant luxury rather than an uber-glossy getaway. Many of the guests here are repeat ones, with 65% returning year after year for the old world grandeur which pervades the place. As a result, the staff welcomes them back as members of the family. And Curtain Bluff really is a family – the hotel strives to engage the local community in Old Road as possible, offering jobs to generations of families, even putting some of them through college in the US. Instead of giving tips, guests are encouraged to contribute to the Old Road fund which contributes to these programmes.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST

Philanthropy aside, Curtain Bluff has plenty of other features to recommend it, particularly those bestowed by Nature. The hotel’s classic colonial architecture here sits in 20 acres of gardens, all sandwiched between two stunning beaches. Each engulfed by a different ocean, the two beaches are completely different in character. Choose from the tranquil, turquoise one perfect for sunbathing or the rugged one where the waves dramatically crash against the cliffs spraying salty clouds – a perfect view for balmy candlelit dinners. These sumptuous five-course dinners feature the hotel’s signature combination of French and Caribbean cuisine, filled with plenty of fresh fish hooked straight from the ocean, from Antiguan lobster tail to the King Fish and Wahoo I caught during the day’s deep sea fishing expedition. But these dinners aren’t just exceptional quality, they’re also great value, being included in the all-inclusive costing at the hotel. In fact, everything here from the exquisite food to the endless rum punches are included in the price. We loved the laid-back buffet lunches in the beachside restaurant and the traditional afternoon tea served on the stone Sugar Mill terrace overlooking

the gardens, but dinner here is the main attraction. Accompanied with live music and countless wines from the hotel’s legendary cellar, it’s complete FrancoCaribbean indulgence. Also included in the price tag are the many watersports available to guests. Water-skiing, paddle boarding, snorkelling, deep sea fishing and sailing are all on offer throughout the day, ensuring you stay entertained through the holiday. We jumped on a speedboat that took us out to the coral reef about a mile offshore from where we could do some snorkelling, spotting reef sharks, turtles and countless fish that made up an underwater rainbow. We even got a glimpse of a dolphin along the way. Back on dry land, the hotel has a longstanding reputation for tennis and hosts

the annual Antigua Tennis Week on its four courts overlooking the ocean. An islandwide professional tournament, it showcases six days of action-packed match play, as well as stroke-and-strategy clinics for guests and glitzy socialising in the evening. Look out for the other tennis camps run by various British stars, including Andrew Castle and Annabel Croft, which also take place throughout the year. But your holiday here doesn’t have to be high-octane – there’s also an exceptional spa on hand to help you relax. With its cool, clean Balinese décor, Curtain Bluff ’s stunning wellness sanctuary is the perfect place to unwind after stepping off the long flight from London. Try the Ultimate Destresser massage, offering deep relaxation and increased circulation in a treatment room filled with the soothing sounds of the waves lapping against the shoreline below. Afterwards, we lazed in the cliff-top infinity Jacuzzi pool with a rum punch in hand, watching the sun set over the sparkling sea – the ultimate way to enjoy the Caribbean. 

tephen Clasper Interiors is a luxury interior design and bespoke furniture making practice with a difference. Unlike other interior design companies, Stephen Clasper delivers top class interior design and fine furniture as one practice. The company founded by Stephen Clasper in 1995, has a focus on ultra-high net worth clients in London, the Home Counties and worldwide and includes design and furniture for exceptional residential properties in the UK as well as luxury villas and yachts. Central to the excellence of Stephen Clasper Interiors is the way they work with clients to tailor the designs to their exact needs. Clients can depend on Stephen Clasper to manage the whole process, right from conception to completion. The process itself is a creative and rewarding time for the client due to the designers understanding of all their client’s needs. The holistic approach of the company to interiors, combined with their knowledge, passion and hard work means clients receive an unrivalled service in creating exceptional, elegant interiors. Stephen Clasper himself is the central force of the creative side of the business. Having studied at Chelsea

School of Art, he then travelled around the world for a number of years, visiting exotic places helping inspire his future designs. After travelling the world, Stephen began designing furniture and interiors specialising now in the high end residential market. Based up until recently in central London, a relocation to Surrey to expand the manufacturing capacity saw them getting involved with large new build projects in the Surrey

area. Now however their ambitions are focusing back on the London market where their work sits comfortably alongside the high end interiors that are so familiar in the best locations of central London. Stephen Clasper says: “I’ve always loved art, design and the process of creating something from nothing. I’m passionate about thinking differently and I like to surprise our clients with what’s

HOMES & INTERIORS / DESIGN CLIENTS will never SEE AN INTERIOR quite like theirs in ANY OTHER HOME possible to achieve with their properties. Above all I’m proud that thanks to our talented team, they will never see an interior quite like theirs in any other home. Every client is different, and we really get immersed in understanding their lifestyle. The interiors are just one part of the luxury lifestyle experience which we offer, enhancing both the home and the client’s day to day life. I always try to design projects using the very best materials available to us, from beautiful veneers, gorgeous fabrics, leathers, the products available to us are unlimited and contribute to the magic of high quality bespoke design. Of course budgets vary on every project but we will always look at all the options and engineer each project to suit the client. Bespoke furniture is essential to the final look of a project and is really what sets our practice apart from others in the industry. We have an unrivalled control of this element which

does not restrict our imagination.” Recent projects completed by Stephen Clasper Interiors include a house in Kensington (pictured) and a vast new build in Hertfordshire. The Kensington project delivered a touch of urban luxury with a unique style to the property, giving it a luxury feel. The addition of uniquely designed bespoke furniture to complement the many items sourced from high end suppliers has achieved an interior you will not see anywhere else. Notable features

are included throughout the property and there is not one room that does not express this. For the Hertfordshire project, a living and entertaining space was central to the clients brief. Stephen Clasper used rich fabrics and wallpapers to give the entertaining rooms a sense of glamour. The focal point of the entertaining rooms was the hand crafted champagne bar. The bar incorporates chrome and mirror finishes and leather upholstery. As the economy continues to recover, 2015 is set to be a busy year for Stephen Clasper Interiors, with many exciting projects in the future. u ● Stephen Clasper Interiors +44 (0)1932 570 995 stephen@stephenclasper.co.uk stephenclasper.co.uk

Look North

There are alternatives to the pressurised arms race for schools in London and the Home Counties. And they are not as far away as you think Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

M

any dream of getting out of the education arms race, but few of us actually do it. But Tessa Lumley did. Lumley shipped her family nearly 600 miles north, from London to Morayshire where her two girls now attend Gordonstoun. In a letter to the principal Simon Reid, a year later, she wrote: “There was a moment, around two years ago, when we lived in London, Alice was 9 years old and I found myself standing at her school gates wondering if the world had gone mad. Parents were discussing where and whether to get tutors, what their children were and were not reading, what extracurricular activities they did or should do. … I want my children to be happy but we found ourselves in a system that seemed to be about to preclude that. The London academic process allows only certain kinds of children to shine — the lucky few who are either highly intelligent or highly diligent or both; the ones who are mature enough (at 9) to understand the need to give up playtime to study; and the ones with parents who have sufficient control over them to force them to. Anyone else is liable to fail in a system in which they are competing with hundreds for tens of places.” Andrew Johnson, headmaster of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, couldn’t agree more. “People will thrive here academically but at somewhere like Winchester (where Johnson was head of modern languages for ten years) a very bright ten year old boy might not feel very bright, it’s a pressure cooker type of school. We’re just not like that.”

The advantages of these PARTNERSHIPS are COMPLETELY TWO-WAY

“We are academically selective but not relentlessly so – it depends on the individual.” Between 5-10% of pupils at Stonyhurst – one of the UK’s most famous Catholic schools - come from London (30% are international). Johnson says parents come looking for something different, something more wholesome. “Here children can be themselves and grow at a sensible pace without the pressures of the city. It is an opportunity to create a rounded character, someone who is comfortable in their own skin.” And then there’s the space. Northern boarding schools are lousy with it: hills,

69 B&C_MARCH15_Education.indd 69

dales, moors and the sea – they often have it all. Gordonstoun has 200-acre wooded campus one mile from the Moray Firth; the school even has its own yacht and is world famous for its unique outdoor education curriculum. Stonyhurst has a whopping 680-acre campus (St Pauls’ much-envied site by the River Thames in contrast is a paltry 43 acres). The schools are further away, but they bend over backwards to help parents get involved and visit the schools. Stonyhurst is only two hours from Euston station and holds regular weekends where parents are invited to come “and be part of the family of the school,” says Johnson. “The distance does mean a bit of planning but you will also have quality time with your child.” Plus, whisper it, northern boarding schools are generally cheaper. They are also likely to be more generous with scholarships and bursaries. Stonyhurst has an endowment that allows them to give away £2.3 million a year in bursaries and scholarships. 35% of pupils receive some fee support, often to local children. “Therefore we have a more diverse pupil body, not just the children of the super rich,” says Johnson. But the last word goes to Tessa Lumley who finished her letter with this: “Most importantly, both Alice and Emily have flourished. They have grown and matured. They are being robustly and effectively educated — but they are also, crucially for me, being encouraged to be children: adventurous, inquisitive and occasionally intensely muddy. But, best of all, they are happy. Without happiness, surely it would be impossible for them to fulfill their full potential.” Makes you think, doesn’t it? u

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Alex Oppenheim Associate Director at John D Wood & Co., Battersea

I

Photography: rebecca noonan

have recently become a user of Uber. I know I am a little behind the tech curve. Did you know that in the same way passengers can rate taxi drivers, taxi drivers themselves can also rate their passengers? Not quite the case of the hunter becoming the hunted, perhaps more the rater becoming the rated. So, if of an evening you decide to have one for the road before hitting the road, your driver could be blacklisting you as you go along your merry way. Or, in the case of the Oppenheim family, I might be sitting patiently in a taxi, wondering whether my hard-earned 4.85/5 passenger rating is being reviewed, while Senior Management (also known as my wife) assesses which coat to wear. An entirely theoretical scenario and one which would never happen. But why is any of this relevant? Have I suddenly become obsessed with online estate agent reviews? The real reason is this: at the end of 2014, I paused (ever so briefly) for a moment of reflection as I marked 10 years of working for John D Wood & Co. in the Battersea office, and reviewed the last decade of my professional life. This should be the point where I break out the witty anecdotes about the time someone forgot about the early weekend viewing and were still in bed when I arrived (the amusing part was who they were in bed with). Or, as agents, when we jokingly wondered if we would ever see property selling

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

ITOW.indd 104

in Battersea for £1,000 a square foot. The real joy for me has been time and time again acting for many of the same people and helping them find a home. Some I first met when they were looking for a ‘bachelor pad’ or ‘chick flat’, and over time I then helped them sell these properties and trade up to a family home. Others have, as well as living in Battersea themselves, bought an investment property here, a very good barometer as a long-term investment. The company ethos at John D Wood & Co. to always work for the client’s best long-term interests, rather than just for shortterm gain, is one that resonates with me. To act again and again for the same people bears testament to the fact that we will give you the very best advice we can. Even if it means we do not get to sell a property straight away, then so be it. In one instance, I visited the owner of a property every year for eight years before I advised her that the time was right for her to sell her house. Like Uber, we use the latest technology to our clients' advantage. We are rateable online, and successfully act for many long-term clients. At its heart, estate agency is a people business and the traditional values of straight talking, always acting in your clients’ best interests and giving them the best advice remains at the core of how we operate.

Most satisfying transaction I’ve had A house in The Drive, Coombe Hill with scope for development. After multiple bids we achieved in excess of the guide price of £3,000,000. The vendor and purchaser were both delightful people. Most interesting property I’ve been involved with We’re currently marketing a wonderful Art Deco style Sunspan Home in New Malden. It was originally created for the Ideal Home Exhibition in the 1930s. Most unusual interior The house with a shark tank in the entrance hall.

I never thought I'd see In the early 90s I saw a house in South Wimbledon owned by Satanists. It included a shrine, paintings and murals connected with Satanism. Finest property showcase: Wolsey Close, SW20; £3.95m. Offering extensive, far reaching views over the Royal Wimbledon Golf Course, a substantial detached family home, of over 4700 sq ft situated at the end of a private cul-de-sac. Why this area? Clapham is an incredibly exciting part of the capital and is drawing admiring glances from buyers previously wedded to spots north of the river or those considered to be “prime”. The architecture is charming and varied, and the schools, restaurants and bars are fantastic.

This should underpin healthy trading conditions throughout the year with modest growth in the region of 3%.

he New Year has started with a bang and seems set to emulate the early rush of last year. Many commentators suggested that the period leading up to the general election in May would be slower than usual. This evidently is not how it is going to pan out, with all of Jacksons' sales offices reporting increases in sales agreed through January, with one office recording a whopping increase of 300% year-on-year for new sales agreed this year. So what does this mean for prices in 2015? Well the most basic principle of economics states that with increased demand and stable supply then prices will increase. However in the springtime many homeowners considering a move will put their home up for sale, thereby increasing supply. Yet if the demand stays constant then prices will still increase, however the rate of increase may slow a little. This would mean annual price inflation might be more moderate and sustainable than in previous years. Accordingly, we are expecting a brisk sales market throughout 2015 with steady and more sustainable price rises, which may finally bring a market in which buyers and sellers will both thrive.

One of the first people we ran the idea past was Phil Spencer. He was totally supportive and has presented The ESTAS every year since.” Now in their 13th year, The ESTAS Group have developed into more than a very prestigious awards event. They are a management information service, marketing tool and live client feedback hub for agents, mortgage brokers, conveyancers and suppliers to the industry. Phil Spencer

he first thing I noticed about Simon Brown, Managing Director of The ESTAS Group was how passionate he is about customer service. “Most of us nowadays are used to having average or bad customer experiences, we all have them every day. The frustrating thing is that when we do have a bad experience and want to complain, it’s normally such a long-winded process we give up because we’re too busy. That means most companies never actually know they are giving sub-standard service.” Brown is equally frustrated at the raw deal estate and letting agents get from the general public and media. “My wife Sarah used to work for a local agent and it wasn't until then I realised how hard a job it was. There are so many different factors to every deal and there are many things that can happen that you’re not in control of that can break a chain down.” Brown felt so strongly about Sarah’s experience that they both decided to launch a national award scheme which highlights agents giving excellent customer service. “We decided straight away the best way to ‘judge’ agents was to ask clients to rate the service they received. We wanted to help change the general perception of agents and at the same time give firms the platform to promote their commitment to providing

Access to The ESTAS platform immediately gives each business a marketing pack with which to advertise, using posters, embed logos, press releases and tweet feedback to their followers through direct links. Monthly service performance reports with live graphs measuring feedback in different service areas against regional competitors and national average and a winner’s marketing pack are all part of the ESTAS experience, helping firms to manage and grow their businesses. “Our clients use the ESTAS process both internally and externally to increase customer service levels, to manage and motivate teams and to brand their business as one that is happy to be measured by their customers.” Finally Brown adds “This year is going to be more competitive than ever and never more so than in London which is why we have linked up with the Absolutely Magazine Group. We want to spread the word to London agents what the benefits of taking part are and give them a marketing edge in 2015”.

Need to get out more? There are many reasons why you might want to move to SE London, but among them is the abundance of green space and parks. That is if the exceptional schools, the burgeoning café culture, and the direct transport links into central London don’t persuade you. And all this for a lower price tag than our more established neighours. So if you’re looking to stretch your legs and look South East, we believe there’s no better place to start than by talking to the local experts. Pedder. London's MOST POPULAR

Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S

The floating trend: Back of the Moon, Taggs Island, TW12

F

loating homes are evidently popular among Londoners. Some 18,271 people have so far had a peek at this water borne property since it was listed in July last year – and it’s also this month’s most popular property on Zoopla.co.uk. Back of the Moon, which is for sale at £1.8m, is a recently completed 3,000 sq ft contemporary houseboat on Taggs Island, a slip of land on the Thames upstream from Hampton Court and reached via a humpback bridge. Like most of the 60 houseboats on the island, Back

of the Moon is moored to piles driven into the bank but unlike most, it comes with a large 125ft mooring and a landscaped half-acre garden behind it, making it one of the largest plots on Taggs Island. Back of the Moon has been completed externally but it now needs finishing inside and could be an “artist’s home, workshop and gallery or a five bedroom home”, says agent Mary Hodgson of Waterside Residential. She says the property includes street parking for five cars, two driveways, a garage/workshop, summerhouse, outbuildings and its own slipway. But the person who buys Back of the Moon will be getting more than just a floating home. Taggs Island has plenty more to offer including an interesting history, a very famous boat owner and a strong community feel. The island takes

141 MOST POPULAR.indd 136

its name from Thomas Tagg who ran a boatyard on it during the 1870s and subsequently opened a hotel too. Then in 1902 Fred Karno, the theatrical impresario credited with nurturing the talents of Charlie Chaplin, bought the hotel along with the rest of the island. But Taggs Island slowly slipped back into obscurity until the early 1970s when it was used by film director Stanley Kubrick to shoot scenes for his 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. But development of the island only began in earnest when, in 1983, it was bought by a group of houseboat owners and proper sewage, water services and moorings were introduced. The decent services and idyllic position make the island popular with artists and musicians wanting to ‘get away from it all’ but be near London and that includes David Gilmour, guitarist and song writer with the band Pink Floyd. He owns the Edwardian houseboat built by Fred Karno and it is now Gilmour’s home studio. It is here that Pink Floyd’s most recent two albums The Division Bell and Endless River were recorded. But with such an extraordinary island come unusual aspects of life. The first is that mortgages for its houseboats are tricky to secure so most buyers make cash offers and, while the homes are freehold, the mooring and land are leasehold. Also, there are annual fees to be paid both to the Environment Agency for the mooring and to the island’s freeholders for its upkeep – but one of the island’s chores is also a pleasure. Some residents do their shopping by boat and chug up to Kingston to pop into Waitrose.
