EDITOR’S letter

M

anolo Blahnik, probably the most famous shoe designer in the world, waited 44 years after opening his first London shop before opening his second. He wanted to be quite certain it was in the right place. This kind of perfectionism reflects in his design work and is probably what has made his shoes such iconic pieces. We were lucky in this issue to be able to ask some questions of the man himself, and to reproduce some of his beautiful illustrations as we celebrate the new store. And what better to wear on your feet with spring’s new colours than a pair of multi-hued Manolos? Because also in this issue we are looking at the new season’s palette and discovering that it mostly

consists of pink. That’s right – as soon as the first rays of sun emerge from winter we are all going to be dressing in bubblegum shades. But they’re very grown-up ones, so you won’t be looking like your five-year-old. See our pink-themed fashion shoot on page 26 for inspiration. Fashion aside, we are travelling to Battersea Park for the The Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair which happens to fall on the Queen’s 90th birthday weekend on page 15 and a little further afield to the pure shores of Sri Lanka on page 54. Battersea Park’s Spring Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair has a royal twist this month Wo r d s C at h e r i n e H a l e s

his month, our longest reigning monarch will celebrate her 90th year. In honour of this, we recommend popping down to Battersea Park to have a look (and possibly pick up a few items) at the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair. To mark the occasion, the fair will have a royal theme, with the foyer display bringing together regal objects and art alongside pieces relating to the Royal Collection, palaces and homes. Those looking to furnish their dining room with a hint of imperial flair can take home ceremonial chairs of the

type used in coronations – chairs from 1953 when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned and from the 1969 investiture of the Prince of Wales have been much in demand lately. Alternatively, trick out your study with classic furniture like a Carlton House desk, an early 19th century design associated with the London residence of the Prince Regent, later King George IV. If you’re looking for something impressive to hang over the mantelpiece, you may find an early 19th century English carved wooden royal armorial that fits perfectly. In addition to these splendid items, the fantastic range of unusual period design, FONTAINE Early C20th terracotta 20th century classics and figure of the Venus de Milo. £495

CEREMONIAL CHAIRS ARE MUCH IN DEMAND eccentric accessories, mixed with fine and decorative antiques for which the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair has become known will all be on display. With 150 exhibitors from the UK and Europe in attendance, this is a must-visit event showcasing works of art from the ancient to the contemporary, including sculpture, paintings, prints and photography. Since its inception, the fair has been the go-to event for interior designers and those looking to decorate their home or even just find some inspiration. At the recent Winter Fair, decorators including Rose Uniacke, Olga Polizzi and Veere Grenney, and US trade buyers such as Billy Cotton were in attendance. Well-known visitors included David Beckham and Sir Paul Smith. If you’re of a more green-fingered bent, The Spring Decorative Fair is always a good place to look for gardenrelated decoration too. Planters, urns and statuary, stone benches and unusual objets like antique or industrial metal window frames re-glazed with mirror are always popular. So, whether you want to indulge in a royal celebration, pick up some truly special pieces for your home or just shop while you walk the dog, head down to the fair this month. ◆

Sole Man Manolo Blahnik opened his first London store in 1973, and his second last month. Absolutely meets the seminal designer to talk decades of shoes Interview pendle harte

ABSOLUTELY:Your design process is known for its precision. Where do you start when imagining a new shoe? MANOLO BLAHNIK: Usually the idea comes from something that has been in my mind for a long time, sometimes I go to an exhibition or visit a new city and see something that I like and translate it immediately into a shoe. I don’t follow a design process, if something comes to my mind I put it down on paper. Sometimes it could even be a material that inspires an entire collection… there is always a surprise. You started in set design but moved to shoes. What was the appeal of shoes? MB: Design in general has always been my passion. Fashion, art, architecture. I started as a set and costume designer, fascinated by the fact that I could make up a character and by how important costumes are in creating personality. I had the opportunity to meet the extraordinary Diana Vreeland, who recommended me to focus on shoes. I have followed her advice ever since.

How did you learn your craft? MB: With very hard work. I am a very curious person and like to be constantly learning in life. My main goal is to achieve perfection, which is impossible.

Your big break came when you designed shoes for Ossie Clark. Tell us about that. What was he like? What were the shoes like? MB: When Ossie approached me I couldn’t believe it. It was my very first big opportunity and as you can imagine I was very nervous. For the occasion I designed an ankle strap round-toed shoe with a block heel and called the design ‘Ossie’. However it could have been my last job. I didn’t use steel to support the heel, so when the models where walking down the catwalk they were swinging and not very stable. I was completely shocked but as it turned out, everybody loved it. What a relief that was. What’s the enduring appeal of the high heel? MB: It’s sensuous, it’s elegant and makes your body move differently. A high heel is timeless and works always.

Do you have a huge shoe archive? MB: I do indeed. I have kept all the shoes I designed over the years, they are everywhere - it is like living in a shoe jungle. For the last two years they have been collected in climate controlled storage. Your first shop remains in Chelsea, and you have just opened a new one in Burlington Arcade. Why another London shop? MB: My shop in Chelsea will always remain very special to me. I also want to design some exclusive styles that will only be available there. It is where it all began. I have been looking for many years to open another shop in central London, however I hadn't found the right space until now. I am very passionate and not business driven at all so I didn’t mind waiting and I didn’t have any deadline, until this incredible opportunity

What are you currently working on? MB: We are working on a documentary which will come our later this year. My friend, the director Michael Roberts, approached me some time ago with this idea and I said: why not? I feel very lucky to have some incredible people involved in the documentary and I am very much looking forward to see the result. was offered to me. Burlington Arcade has always been a reference to me. I remember going there the very first time I came to London – it was so captivating. And now almost 40 years later, I can’t believe I am having my own shop there. Burlington Arcade represents the England I love and want to be part of.

What’s your most popular shoe? MB: I have many but I feel particularly attached to the ‘Ivy’ shoe from my beginning. I think it is the silhouette and design that is recognizable. The attention to balance and cut and the carefully selected materials is my special touch. ◆ manoloblahnik.com

ast November saw the opening of GUINOT’s latest franchise salon The GUINOT Salon, in a prime retail location on Earlsfield’s busy high street. Franchisee Justyna Rostek was joined by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Nicola Nardelli, and celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott to cut the ribbon and officially open the new salon. After extensive refurbishment, the former hair salon has been transformed into a GUINOT franchise showcasing the clean lines and iconic red and white colour scheme associated with the brand. Justyna Rostek is not new to the brand, as she was formerly the manager at GUINOT’s flagship salon in Albemarle Street, Mayfair. When Justyna’s franchise application was approved and she had secured suitable premises in Earlsfield High Street, it took just three months to complete the refurbishment and fit-out the salon to the high specification synonymous with all GUINOT franchises.

Rebecca from Go Earlsfield blog was invited to try one of their facials and here’s what she told us about it: Justyna had invited me to try the ‘Hydradermie2’ signature facial. It’s a onehour indulgence that’s based on the principle of double ionisation and uses specialist tools to get maximum benefit. I was shown into the cosy, relaxing treatment rooms underneath the salon. Decorated in the salon’s signature red and white, I was delighted to discover they boast heated treatment beds. There was a real chance I would never leave.

the treatment was a BLESSING for MY SKIN

The treatment itself was a blessing for my poor, winter-damaged skin. Comprising a bespoke selection of serum gels, moisturisers and massage, I was informed afterwards that my skin was drinking up the products like a sponge. The roller electrodes gave a pleasantly tingly sensation. I’m a little fuzzy on the science behind it all, but even my husband noticed how much softer my skin was, so it worked! You can always tell when you’re in good hands at a salon – something about the way you can drift off knowing you’re with someone who knows exactly what they’re

doing. I was certainly miles away when we got to the end of my treatment. Days on, my skin has kept that softness and looks and feels so much better. I also left with a bespoke treatment sheet and some samples to try at home. Guinot Earlsfield has definitely been added to my little black book of salons to recommend, but I suspect the secret won’t be kept for long as bookings are already stacking up. 

ay the Fifteenth, with its mismatched interiors and village-esque feel, has made its name on Abbeville Road. The unpretentious, French cafe-style bistro offers a menu filled with hearty comfort food and sharing plates. The chef changes the specials on a daily basis, making the most of the season's produce. The easy-going staff sit us down and talks us through the wine list as the place fills up with locals and other diners seeking sociable comfort food in one of Clapham's most popular spots. The drinks list matches the food menu, with its combination of classic options as well as its offering of quirky dishes and wines for a special celebration. We are brought a bottle of 2009 Le Vallon Grenache/ Syrah, which goes down perfectly with our choice of meaty dishes. After hearing regular diners discussing the sharing plates, we go for the charcuterie to start, followed by the shared duck for our main. The starter comes with a selection of monroyo ham, chorizo de bellota, coppa, and a basket of warm sourbough. The hearty starter is shortly followed by the main, the sharing meal of the day. The succulent duck comes sat on a bed of cider and bacon and is served up with a large portion of creamy dauphinois potatoes and vegetables. Formerly Abbeville Kitchen, the chef who took over this lovely little bistro-bar christened it after the date he signed the forms. But the food remains much the same: focusing on quality, quantity and an added quirky touch. ◆

A

uthentic Spanish dining might be found strolling down La Rambla, that perfect spot to unwind with a bottle of red and a selection of tapas dishes. Instead, we’re wandering along Queenstown Road in the hunt for traditional tapas. Sitting on the corner of the busy street is Boqueria - named after Barcelona’s central food market. Inside, the restaurant is sleek and stylish but keeps some intimate Spanish touches including the quirky upside down baskets hanging from the ceiling and the friendly Spanish staff. The menu boasts a combination of classic and contemporary dishes, combined with a variety of Spanish wines and desserts. We are greeted in the deli area, seated in the restaurant and offered olives and nibbles while we look over the wine list. After advising us on the best wine to go with our

choices, the waitress drops a bottle of Rioja at our table before our dishes are brought out. Out first are the croquetas with Iberian ham and chicken, the perfect contrast to some of the punchier dishes which follow such as the squid and mussels served up on a bed of black rice. Next up is the most interesting dish of them all: the cochinillo asado. Suckling pig with sweet potato crisps, apple sauce and lemon sorbet, the melt in your mouth pork has a crisp outside, complemented by the zingy flavours of the sorbet. To finish, we opt for the recommended saffron strawberry brioche served with vanilla ice-cream. Sweet, simple and truly satisfying. Boqueria is our new favourite spot south of the river for sunshine food and a faultless Spanish feast. ◆

ri Lanka’s history is a turbulent one. Years of civil war and environmental disasters could have left the country in dire straits, and while the political situation is far from stable – corruption is still a problem and cultural tensions run high – the fascinating history, ecological abundance, and beauty of the island has kept it on numerous travel hotlists. In recent years, the country has become a top destination, but rocky PRIVATE VILLA AT terrains and little investment in SUN AQUA PASIKUDAH the east coast means that foreign feet have rarely strayed far from the country’s capital, Colombo. Typical traveling routes don't stray far from the lush, culturally rich region of Kandy in the Central Province, where the ancient monarchy once ruled, and Galle in the southwest, which offers a stellar combination of seaside bliss and an opulent cultural heritage. Sure, these destinations are beautiful and make for a wonderful traveling experience, but there is more to Sri Lanka, region by foreign investment diminished. and it lies on the east coast. Since the war finally ended in 2009, venture Sri Lanka’s civil war, a battle that in the province has gradually improved spanned 25 years, divided the country, and reconstruction is well under way. in Colombo is probably your best bet, taking in some of the most breathtaking views over the undulating landscape. Arriving in Batticaloa you will see bullet-riddled shacks and collateral from the shattering 2004 tsunami. These remains offer a harrowing insight into the hard reality people in this territory faced during the conflict. A quick 20-minute drive from the seaplane reservoir and you’re at the resort, enjoying a warm Sri Lankan welcome. The main building is surrounded by private villas, which all sit facing the azure Indian Ocean. Each building houses a large bed, private outside area and al fresco bathroom area, with some even boasting their own plunge pools. If you’re lucky enough to bag one of these, be sure to take a magical midnight dip for a spot of stargazing. The grounds are home to a gym and beauty salon, the holistic Sun Aqua Spa, and a large granite swimming pool which faces onto the beach. The long stretch of golden sand boasts the longest shallow coastline on the island of Sri Lanka and shares the same water as the neighbouring Maldives - so you know you’re in good company. Another big draw at Sun Aqua Pasikudah is the food. Gourmet cuisine from around the world is available (you can have eggs benedict for breakfast, for example) but it’s the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine you want to save your appetite for. Local ingredients are used where possible, with many grown in the hotel’s gardens. There are five dining options: our

favourites are Latitude for all-day casual al fresco dining, and the Pavilion, which houses a glass-enclosed wine cellar and is ideal for a private celebratory dinner. The lunchtime buffet at the former is quite something – expect a spread of spicy Sri Lankan curries, enormous prawns, roti, dhal, gotu kola mallung (a salad of chillies, ginger, shallots and freshly grated coconut), eggplant moju (deep-fried aubergine with chilli, mustard seeds, cloves and ginger), all finished with bowls of exotic fresh fruit. While the resort offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained for well over a week – scuba diving, volleyball, eating and lying in the sun are just some of the activities you can partake in – a trip to the local sights is well worth pulling yourself away from the

sun lounger and frozen strawberry daiquiris for. A must-do is an excursion to the Maduru Oya National Park, where you’ll likely spot everything from wild boars and water buffalo to the enormous Sri Lankan elephant. Another expedition worth considering is a trip to Dambana to visit the last remaining tribe of Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, the Vedda (which translates as “hunter” in Tamil). While there’s not much to see other than the villagers going about their everyday tasks, there is also a museum with more details about their culture. The service, style and attention to details at Sun Aqua is exceptional, so while you’ll discover a whole new world, with it will be all the luxury comforts you could hope for. A trip to remember indeed. u

At this point most will invite a number of agents round to view the home so that the agents can give you a current market appraisal (valuation) and hopefully let you know how they intend to sell your home. There are various reasons sellers appoint a particular agent, however for the purpose of this particular piece we’re concentrating on the process of selling your home and ensuring, as best you can, a stress free sale. The various agents that are visiting your home are effectively auditioning or being interviewed by yourself. Did they turn up on time? Did they turn up prepared? Were they presentable? Did they even turn up at all?

Purchasing a new home should be exciting and something you look forward to I recall turning up for a market appraisal and the seller informing me that the last agent didn’t turn up even though the seller had called the agents office 20 minutes after the agreed appointment to be told that the agent was on his way, 10 minutes later the seller called again this time the agent who should have been at the property picked up the phone. As a sales negotiator I recall my manager instilling the virtue of making ‘your first impression count’. The valuation/market appraisal is your opportunity to let the agent know what is most important to you: price you achieve, speed of sale and flexibility, allowing you time perhaps to find your own

onward purchase. Your priorities should, in my opinion, be just as important to your agent. I always find that understanding my sellers needs and what is most important to them really helps alleviate any issues down the line. I’m not for one moment suggesting that issues don’t occur, however a quality and experienced agent will often head them off before they even reach that stage, and if unavoidable will almost certainly be able to deal with it, or if required, advise you how best to deal with it. So personally, I disagree that buying a house is one of the most stressful things in life. I would like to think that the vast majority of people who I have helped sell and buy their homes over the years have found the process reassuring, stress free and dare I say it, at times even enjoyable! After all purchasing a new home should be exciting and something you look forward to. And a quality, experienced agent will prioritise the needs of their seller whilst ensuring a stress free sale with both the buyer and the seller happy come completion. ◆

he red hot streets of Battersea, Putney and Wimbledon are some of the most expensive and sought-after in south west London as high prices in central London push buyers – and demand for homes - further out. According to Savills, this part of London outperformed the prime London average during 2015 with prices rising by 1% while prime central London recorded falls of up to 5%, according to research by Knight Frank. The strongest growth in prices in south west London, says Savills, has been for homes under £1 million helped by recent Stamp Duty changes. One advantage of this trend is that, if you are lucky enough to own property in postcodes such as SW19, SW11 or SW15, then you are likely to have some equity to burn – particularly if you’re looking to escape to the country. To give you a taster of the towns where you could turn your SW square footage into a larger footprint, here are six towns in Sussex and Berkshire which, figures from website ReallyMoving. com show, are the most popular destinations for SW homeowners shipping out of the smoke.

ecent tax changes have been heralded as a potential death knell for property investment in London’s prime neighbourhoods. But is that really true? We take the measure of the market. The fourth of December 2014 is not a date many who invest in London’s prime property would like to recall. During the Autumn statement that year, Chancellor George Osborne had announced a new way of calculating Stamp Duty that increased the tax bill for anyone

But some parts of prime central London are still struggling as fresh Stamp Duty changes just for buy-to-let property buyers (an extra 3%) are set to kick in in April this year. Both the 2014 and most recent measures are putting off international buyers in particular and who make up a third of all purchases in these areas, the company says. This has split London in two. On the one hand are the super-prime areas where asking prices are still very ‘soft’ (as agents like to say) while the outer prime areas away from central London remain relatively healthy for investors.

Prices are still rising in these areas, albeit not at the spectacular rates seen a few years ago, these recent figures from Knight Frank reveal. For example, their research highlights the 17 prime areas of the capital where house prices are increasing fastest. All the others including: Notting Hill, South Kensington, St John’s Wood, Knightsbridge, Hyde Park, Chelsea, Belsize Park, Belgravia and Battersea, all saw flat or dropping prices over the past year*. u

buying a home over £500,000 by at least £15,000 and the new rules kicked in three months later. Agent Marsh and Parsons says that between September 2014 (when it was announced) and March 2015, the new system stalled both the number of homes sold in London’s prime market and pushed down prices. If you look at the Marsh and Parsons figures then although house prices in prime London have dropped over the past year, they are starting to pick up again.
