Editor’s
Letter
“IT’S SO NICE BEING NEAR FRIENDS IN BATTERSEA. I LOVE BEING CLOSE TO THE PARK.” (TAMASIN DAY-LEWIS) It feels timely to be writing my first editor’s letter for Absolutely now. January is, of course, traditionally associated with new beginnings. The classic resolutions are made, which usually involve ending the forthcoming year weighing less and earning more. However, we’re hoping that you’ll be inspired to greater things when you read this issue. You see, there’s a bit of a ‘power woman’ theme to be found in the coming pages, as we chat to Jo Malone and Tamasin Day-Lewis. Each phenomenally successful in their own right, they reflect both ends of the spectrum; Jo, the business-savvy entrepreneur behind one of the world’s most luxurious fragrance brands, and Tamasin, the artistic soul who’s enjoyed success as a cook, writer and filmmaker. Next, to inspire you physically as well as mentally, Patrick Holford has given us his 3 Day Detox Guide. Helping you to counteract that Christmas over-indulgence, it’s sure to have you feeling tiptop again in no time. And if you’re going to be depriving yourself, you’ll need something to look forward to, so we’ve compiled a list of 2013’s most exciting offerings. All you need to do is pop them in your diary. I do hope you enjoy my first issue.

Pull Some BATTERSEA ARTS CENTRE’S NEW PRODUCTION REFLECTS PUPPETRY’S GROWING POPULARITY. GEORGIE LANE-GODFREY TAKES A LOOK AT THE MEDIUM 13

I
n a small, English seaside town, a child is dying. With no hope of a cure, the town’s people despair. Then, out of nowhere, a strange winged creature is blown into the village and the impossible happens: the child miraculously recovers. The Battersea Arts Centre’s latest offering, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, is as charming as it is creative. Based on the children’s story by Gabriel García Márquez, the puppetry is unrivalled. But it’s the choice of genre in particular which makes this show so interesting. Once hugely unfashionable, puppetry is experiencing something of a renaissance. No longer just the domain of children’s entertainment, puppetry is now being recognised in its own right as a creative and intelligent platform for adult theatre. ‘People are beginning to understand that puppetry is equally suitable for older audiences because of its ability to sensitively address more adult themes,’ explains Oliver Smart, tutor of puppetry at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama and the Little Angel Theatre adult education programme. ‘One example is death. An actor can never get the same effect when he
portrays a death on stage simply because he does not actually die. Because puppets are inanimate, they are essentially already dead, making it much easier to represent this state. A person can’t actually die on stage but a puppet can be ripped apart. It’s a great medium for portraying violence.’ Just look at Minghella’s vision of Madame Butterfly at the ENO. In this version, Puccini’s gloriously Italianate score is juxtaposed with the stylisation of Japanese theatre, including the manipulation of traditional Bunraku puppets. At Butterfly’s death, these puppets tear her obi, pulling red ribbons from her waist, which unravel like streams of blood. It’s a clever way of portraying the violence of the scene and its underlying irony — Butterfly is essentially the puppet of men.
14
Puppeteer.indd 14
11/12/2012 19:53
Smart credits this ability to portray a deeper level of emotion as the reason for puppetry’s recent surge in popularity. It would seem that London is a particularly fertile ground for the medium, with high profile shows such as War Horse, Avenue Q and The Lion King becoming regular features in the West End. ‘London is very multicultural and has a buoyant theatre scene so it’s a real global melting pot of performance styles,’ adds Smart. ‘People love the theatre here so puppetry not only offers them something different, but something which bridges the cultural divide. Remember, the UK is the birthplace of Punch and Judy so the British have a history of connecting with puppetry.’ Of course, puppetry hasn’t always been popular. A certain theatrical snobbery meant that for a long time it was consigned to the world of children’s theatre. It’s a stance which is somewhat ironic when you consider that intellectuals Samuel Beckett and Gertrude Stein both wrote plays for puppets.
Today, it’s a very different story. Theatre makers and spectators alike are beginning to appreciate puppetry’s versatility. ‘As a medium, it is limitless,’ enthuses Smart. ‘Puppetry uses the imaginative potential of both the stage and the audience. It demands that spectators use their cerebral creativity to connect with the show.’ The result, he claims, is a performance that is totally unpredictable. ‘There’s a real element of surprise because it’s such a transformational style of theatre.’ It’s a sentiment which rings true with A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, a charming story which questions the very essence of human nature. ‘It’s a magical show,’ says Smart, ‘but that’s the thing with puppetry. It’s got that ability to make any performance into a visual feast.’
AS A MEDIUM, IT IS SUCH A TRANSFORMATIONAL FORM OF THEATRE.
Oliver is running a puppetry workshop in conjunction with ‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’ at Battersea Arts Centre. For more information on both the show and the workshop, visit bac.org.uk 15

TAMASIN DAY LEWIS.indd 30
11/12/2012 21:32
Family Matters WRITER, FILM-MAKER, COOK. ALICE MILNER TALKS TO THE MULTI-TALENTED TAMASIN DAY-LEWIS
T
amasin Day-Lewis certainly knows how to make an entrance. She appears in the buzzing hive of Gail’s Bakery on the Northcote Road crowned in fur and robed in a sleek jet black coat designed by Alice Temperley – ‘an old friend from the Somerset mafia’. Even chattering mummies and cooing babies are hushed at the sight of Battersea’s exciting new resident with her glossy dark hair and striking features. Coming as she does from a dynasty of cultural royalty (brother – Oscar-winning Daniel-Day Lewis, father – Poet Laureate Cecil-Day Lewis, mother – Actress Jill Balcon) it’s no surprise that Tamasin Day-Lewis has both stage presence and standing as a documentary film maker, writer for English and American Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire and a host of successful cookbooks. Tamasin embraces me with genuine warmth and bonhomie, exclaiming, ‘You have to get familiar with the cinnamon buns here, they are delicious!’ Her strong conviction instantly cures my pastry phobia and I parrot her order, ‘Cinnamon bun for me please’.
I return to the table where two admirers of Tamasin have already snuck in to compliment a recent article she wrote in the Evening Standard about her childhood relationship with her brother ‘Dan’, who is starring as Abraham Lincoln in Spielberg’s latest film Lincoln (released in Britain on 25th January). Nothing about Tamasin is wishy-washy – she takes her coffee black. From the word go it’s clear that she is passionate, resolute, sophisticated, knows her own mind and speaks at the speed of light. Her enthusiasm for literature, life and food with its endless possibilities is magnetic and her animated voice and exuberance draws me into her creative world. ‘I am a storyteller. All I have ever wanted to do is tell people stories. That’s why my food books are not just food books – they are narratives. You tell the great stories of your life with food. Food is life – life is food. The most important events in your life are at the table. Weddings, births, funerals – what you ate when’. Tamasin’s new book, Smart Tart, certainly isn’t just a ‘food book’. It’s all about
engaging people’s lives with her food through an exciting interactive online platform called ‘Unbound’ where you can watch Tamasin’s video pitch and pledge to support her book’s publication (unbound.co.uk/books/smarttart). Since writing a bestseller The Art of the Tart 12 years ago, Tamasin says she feels it’s about time to reclaim her crown as ‘The Queen of Tarts’. ‘I have perfected and up-dated even the old-fashioned classics (like Tarte Au Citron) and now I have a hundred new sweet and savoury tarts up my sleeve’, she says. Some of these updates are accompanied by ‘poems, short autobiographical tales and portraits of other characters in my life’. The thrill of this inventive idea is the higher your online pledge, the greater your involvement in Tamasin’s creative process. £10 can see your name printed in every edition of the book, £100 includes a ‘Smart Tart Master Class’ with Tamasin in her pink stone Somerset farmhouse. Higher pledges can even get a tart named after you and made with your own suggested key ingredients. ‘I don’t quite know what way it is going to go,’ she says excitedly, ‘My whole life is – what next?!’ 31

Harry
Conversation darts from one topic to another like a bee in a flowerbed and we land upon one of her main passions – her three gifted children. It’s no surprise that they are bright given that Tamasin graduated from King’s College, Cambridge in the 70s. She tells me that her eldest Miranda, 30, studied at Bristol University and is a trained barrister and linguist as well as a contributor to Tamasin’s book Food You Can’t Say No To. Her son Harry, 28, is described by her as a ‘slimmer 6ft 4 version of my brother 30 years ago’, and is an old Etonian and Oxford graduate now working as a Management Consultant. Tamasin stresses the importance her family places on ‘serving the creative spirit’ so Harry is also the singersongwriter for ‘The Fireflies Band’. Harry has often found inspiration for his songs on family holidays where they ‘reconnect’ with
Charissa, Miran
da and Harry
As Tamasin points me to her son’s band on Soundcloud, her phone chirps when ‘Daughter number two’ texts about a sudden drought of milk at home. Charissa (named after Spenser’s ‘Faerie Queene’) is a budding 23-yearold actress keeping up the ‘family business’. Tamasin is clearly a devoted mother as she explains that part of her motivation for getting a Battersea pad was to rescue Charissa from true Withnail and I conditions Harry, Tamasin, Charis sa where she had to ‘sleep in half a bed with an old Bedalian friend’. Tamasin smiles wryly and says, ‘At least she has now got her own bed – which I know is quite a spoiling thing!’ We both erupt with laughter. Tamasin suddenly spots the time, remembers the parking ticket and invites me to continue our interview back at her home. As we arrive we spy her ethereal daughter Charissa in the kitchen researching her next role, having recently performed in a ss ari Ralph Fiennes’ film The Invisible Ch d an Harry, Tamasin, Miranda Woman. Tamasin remarks, ‘She’s Woman just like my brother – very rigorous.’ The new home already feels cosy with their Irish roots at their ‘sugar lump cottage walls and shelves peppered with Charissa’s in Mayo – built directly onto a bog and vibrant artworks. Tamasin expresses her facing out to the Atlantic Ocean!’ Tamasin love of London life when she comes up from mentions that her brother ‘Dan’ straddles Somerset to stay with her daughter, ‘It’s so nice being near friends in Battersea. I love being close to the park and the Italian restaurant ‘Melanzana’. I walk into Piccadilly, Kensington and Chelsea (to support the football). I walk everywhere!’ I’m kindly invited to join them for lunch and feel excited to sample Tamasin’s homemade Thai soup. As she ladels a generous portion into my bowl the Atlantic with homes in both Ireland and she recounts its wholesome ingredients in New York, having married an American, double quick time – ginger, coconut milk, red Rebecca Miller (Arthur Miller’s daughter). onion squash, red chillis, fish sauce, celery, Intrigued by her brother’s creative process, I onion and garlic. ‘It’s good central heating,’ ask how he prepares for a role in his films, to she quips. Just like her food, Tamasin is which she asserts, ‘No one can understand earthy, invigorating and her company warms the workings of a true artist. You have to you to the core. look at the work and nothing else.’
“NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND THE WORKINGS OF A TRUE ARTIST. YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE WORK AND NOTHING ELSE”

REVIEWING OR REVAMPING, LITTLE CHANGES CAN HAVE BIG IMPACTS DIAMOND CONSTRUCTIONS LTD

here is a time, usually on the weekend or at the end of the day, when you sit down with a big cup of tea and look around the house and imagine life in a new home. You dream of stripping the peeling wallpaper off the walls, fantasize about smashing the old kitchen island to pieces (it looked so good 20 years ago, but the marble surface is all stained and weathered now), envisage the basement with its endless, useless items from the past as a studio and the mouldy shed at the end of the garden as a brand new place to relax. Your mental renovation is done – you just need a helping hand to actually put it into practice. Diamond Construction Ltd can transform all your wistful thinking into reality. It doesn’t have to be a monumental operation – it can be anything from refitting a window or door, to building a completely new house entirely. If you’ve got the perfect idea and know how you want things to look, Diamond Construction Ltd can advise you on the best solution to suit your individual needs. They know that there
is nothing worse than picturing something so vividly only to have that vision tarnished and trampled on by builders who fail to listen to what you want. The greatest thing about Diamond Construction Ltd is not only are they competent and experienced, but they make sure to finish the job on time and within the pre-discussed budget. That may sound like a given, but how many times has a seemingly simple project been drawn out into a hellish
and over costly refurbishment? If you’re prolonging your house extension, loft conversion, basement, garden, shed, roof or kitchen – give yourself the opportunity to live inside your dream and get in touch with Diamond Constructions Ltd. F
orget diamonds, it’s your liver which is really your best friend. Your health, energy and stamina are all dependant on this super-organ that turns food into energy and detoxifies the waste created by the body’s metabolism. The more you eat and drink, the harder it has to work, making it become sluggish with overindulgence. So, after the digestive onslaught of the festive season, now is the time to give your liver a reboot. With my three-day liver detox plan, you’re guaranteed to start the New Year on fighting form.
THE HABITS TO BREAK DETOX DO’S AND DON’TS For an instant upgrade in how you look and feel, there are both habits to break and resolutions to make. It may seem like
hard work but remember, it’s only for three days. Firstly you will need to cut the following things completely from your diet: 1. Wheat. All wheat contains gliadin, a type of gluten that irritates the gut. Give your digestive system a week’s break by substituting bread. Replace toast with porridge oats, only have 100% rye bread sandwiches and tuck into oatcakes and Scandinavian-style pumpernickel. Rice is another great alternative. 2. Milk. The most common food allergen, milk causes your system to react and form mucus. Most people produce antibodies for it, however, three days off all dairy products is always beneficial. 3. Caffeine. This will be the hardest part if you’re dependent on your morning
coffee. But that’s the point. Caffeine is an addictive toxin which makes your liver strain to detoxify it. If you can bear it, cut it out. If you find that you’re struggling, allow yourself two cups of green tea to take the edge off. 4. Alcohol. Your liver’s worst enemy, alcohol must be cut out completely.
RESOLUTIONS TO MAKE – 7 GOLDEN LIVER DETOX RULES 1. Drink eight glasses of water every day. After all, your body is 66% water and this alone will help you detoxify. Make sure that it is fi ltered or bottled water. Add half a lemon squeezed into a mug of hot water twice a day. (This water intake includes herb teas or Chia Fresca below). 2. Have a tablespoon of ground chia seeds every day. These contain the most Omega 3 of any seed, as well as lots

of soluble fibre that helps detox the digestive tract and remove unwanted fats. Either add to cereal or make a Chia Fresca, an Aztec concoction for endurance exercise, made by adding a dessertspoon of chia seeds to a glass of water, squeezing in the juice of half a lemon and a teaspoon of honey (if you are exercising) or agave nectar (if you are not). 3. Have a serving of Super Green Mix every day. The medley of spinach, watercress, parsley and basil is great served with soups, salads and main meals. For how to make it, see the recipe box below. 4. Have a serving of cruciferous vegetables every day, such as tenderstem broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts or cabbage. These are high in glucosinolates, which are needed for liver detoxification. 5. Have a garlic clove, a small onion,
shallot or four spring onions every day. High in sulphur, they provide another liver detox essential. 6. Have a super-food smoothie or juice everyday, made with refreshing and healthy fruits such as berries, watermelon and citrus fruits. It’s great to include vegetables too such as celery, cucumber, kale, parsley, root ginger, rocket and watercress. Alternatively, if you have a blender but not a juicer, blend a seeded watermelon, which is high in detoxifying potassium and magnesium. The husk of the seed will sink leaving all the antioxidant nutrients from the seeds in the drink. 7. Take liver-detoxifying supplements. There are now some great supplements on the market that contain all the key nutrients to support your liver and boost detoxification. The key ingredients to look for are:
• Antioxidants: As well as the usual Selenium and Vitamins A, C and E, you need an antioxidant supplement that includes Glutathione, perhaps the most powerful antioxidant, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. This acid is very important because it is both fat- and water-soluble, allowing it to enter all parts of the cell to neutralise harmful free radicals. It can also help regenerate Vitamin E, Vitamin C and – critical to your liver function – glutathione. Ellagic acid is another detoxifying substance found in raspberries and pomegranates. • Digestive Enzymes: These help take a load off your liver by breaking down food well. • Probiotics: Reline your gut with the bacteria that are destroyed by alcohol. • Glutamine: This amino acid is both essential for the liver’s function and for healing the gut after excess alcohol. This is best taken as a powder. Take 41

one teaspoon a day (5 grams) in cold water and separate from food as it is destroyed by heat. Once you start making these changes, you’ll notice a difference in how you feel and look. You should start feeling more energised and motivated, and your skin and eyes should appear clearer.
WHAT TO EAT
During your detox days, there are some foods that you should eat in abundance, some only in moderation, and others you’ll need to avoid completely. Eat in abundance: • Fruits with the highest detox potential, including fresh apricots, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, kiwi, papayas, peaches, mangoes, melons, red grapes and all types of berries. • Vegetables that are especially good for detoxification include artichokes, peppers, beets, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, red cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, kale, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potato, tomato, watercress, and bean and seed sprouts. Eat in moderation: • Limit grains, including brown rice, corn, oats and quinoa, to no more than two servings a day. • Limit fish such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies and sardines to no more than
one daily serving. • Limit bananas and potatoes to one serving every other day. • Have one handful of raw, unsalted nuts and seeds each day. Choose from almonds, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and flaxseeds. • As for oils, use extra-virgin olive oil for cooking and cold-pressed seed oils (such as flaxseed oil) for salad dressing. Avoid: • Cut out meat and dairy products, including red meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese and yogurt. • Avoid wheat. Oats and rice are the best alternatives. • Also avoid salt and any foods containing it, as well as hydrogenated fats, artificial sweeteners, food additives and preservatives, fried foods, spices and dried fruit. For delicious detox recipes, see Patrick Holford’s 9 Day Liver Detox Diet (Piatkus, £12.99, www.patrickholford.com) Patrick Holford is founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and author of over thirty books on nutrition and health, including the highly acclaimed 9 Day Liver Detox Diet. For more details, see www. patrickholford.com. Patrick’s 9 Day Detox Pack, including antioxidants, digestive enzymes, probiotics and daily glutamine powder sachets, is available at Holland and Barrett (£39.99).
To Detox Or Not To Detox
Answer the following questions to see if your liver is crying out for help • Do you often suffer from headaches or migraines? • Do you sometimes have watery or itchy eyes, or suffer from swollen, red or sticky eyelids? • Do you have dark circles under your eyes? • Do you suffer from ear aches, ear infections, ringing or excess ear wax? • Do you often suffer from excessive mucus, a stuffy nose or sinus problems? • Do you suffer from acne, skin rashes or hives? • Do you sweat a lot or have a strong body odour? • Do you suffer from nausea or vomiting? • Do you sometimes have aches or pains in your joints or muscles? • Do you have a sluggish metabolism and find it hard to lose or gain weight?
• Do you suffer from bloating? • Do you often experience frequent or urgent urination? • Do you often have a bitter taste in your mouth or a furry tongue? • Do you have a strong reaction to alcohol? If you answered ‘yes’ to seven or more questions: You definitely need to improve your detox potential. If you answered ‘yes’ to between four and seven questions: You are beginning to show signs of poor detoxification and need to improve your detox potential. If you answered ‘yes’ to fewer than four questions: You are unlikely to have a problem with detoxification but could still benefit from a week’s detox diet.

Bodies under construction THIS YEAR REACH YOUR GOALS WITH A VARIETY OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES THE PUTNEY CLINIC
‘O
ne of the most common reasons for giving up on your New Year’s fitness regime is doing too much too soon and injuring yourself in the process,’ says Leslie Abrahams, physiotherapist at The Putney Clinic. ‘Here at the clinic we saw a number of Olympic-inspired fitness enthusiasts take to the running track with great vigour, only to find themselves with back, ankle and knee problems just a short time later.’ Clive Lathey, his colleague and osteopath at The Putney Clinic, advises, ‘Ensure that you have ironed out any bodily niggles before you embark on a training programme. This will also help you to reach your goals quicker.’ Both clinicians agree that cross training plays an important role in avoiding injury, regardless of whether you are planning
a few rounds of golf or competing in a marathon. Pilates and yoga will also help decrease your risk of injury, as well as increasing strength and flexibility. ‘Getting an osteopath or a physiotherapist to assess your biomechanical needs may help to prevent injuries occurring in the first place,’ says Leslie. ‘Here at The Putney Clinic, we believe in a complete cycle of care, so someone coming to see us with a pain or injury would first receive treatment to relieve the pain before being referred to one of our in-house specialists – either the sports doctor, podiatrist, nutritionist, hypnotherapist or masseur.’ The old adage ‘no pain, no gain’ is just that - old. You don’t need to be in pain to reach your fitness goals! For more information about services provided at the Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy, visit putneyclinic.com or call 020 8789 3881. 45

True Grit JO MALONE TALKS TO GEORGIE LANE-GODFREY ABOUT FAILURE, HER MULTI-MILLION POUND POWER BRAND AND SURVIVING CANCER
J
o Malone is not what you’d expect. Considering her name is synonymous with scenting middle class houses across the country and she used to live in Clapham, there’s a distinct South East London twang to her voice. And whilst other interviews have painted a picture of a softer Jo, laughing about her past naivety, gushing about her husband, this is not the same woman I am speaking to. Instead, the Jo I find is one tough cookie. This is unsurprising when you consider that she sold her eponymous brand to the world’s largest cosmetic company for millions, fought and won a five-year battle against cancer, starred in a TV show (BBC’s High Street Dreams) and then launched another luxury brand all over again. ‘For me, fulfillment and business go hand in hand. I am my work and my work is me. I don’t want to switch off from it because I love it,’ she says, matter-of-factly. ‘When I walked away from Jo Malone in 2006, I never intended to come back to the industry, but then I would get up every day thinking about fragrance and I realised that I have this love for it which is deeper than I thought.’ It’s this love which gave birth to Jo Loves, her new luxury fragrance brand. ‘Having the keys for the first Jo Loves shop, which opens this year, dropped into my hand was one of the proudest moments of my life. It made me realise that there’s no going back.’ Of course, this follows a whole list of achievements which have made Jo
proud, including receiving an OBE from the Queen and turning over her first million in a month after launching Jo Malone in America. It’s a list which is pretty impressive to say the least. Not that it’s been an easy journey, either. The years during which Jo was out of the industry took their toll on her nose and creating fragrances didn’t come
“AS HUMANS, WE HAVE TO LEARN TO ADAPT AND OVERCOME... FIGHTING CANCER TAUGHT ME THAT” back easily. ‘I thought I’d lost that ability,’ she admits. ‘It took six months of working my nose day in and day out before the answers would come as they did before.’ When she did have that breakthrough, the result was Pomelo, a clean and crisp citrusbased scent. ‘Pomelo came at a pivotal part of my life. When I smell it, it reminds me of those moments when I thought I couldn’t do it again. It reminds me of my strength.’ There’s obviously a strong vein of emotion connecting her with the scent. ‘What I think people are longing for today is to touch the heart of someone and Pomelo, for me, did just that.’ I ask if she has the same emotional connection with all her scents? ‘No,’ she replies firmly, ‘Just with Pomelo. It’s become a part of me and my family. About three months ago we had a horrific fire in our house and we lost almost everything. The first time that my son came home to our rented accommodation he cried because he said it wasn’t home.
The next day, when he was at school, I covered the house in Pomelo, scrubbing the floors with it and even bathing the dog. When he came back that evening, he said it smelt like home. For us, Pomelo signifies strength and security.’ It would seem that Jo has had a rougher ride than most, but if she does feel hard done by, she doesn’t let on. ‘As humans, we have to learn to adapt and overcome problems whilst staying true to ourselves. Fighting cancer taught me that. It’s a lesson which goes hand in hand with being an entrepreneur. I’ve had failures as well as successes but part of life is learning how to fail.’ So, is this stoic attitude the secret to her success? ‘I think there’s lots of reasons for it but hard work is definitely top of the list. Of course, it’s a lot easier when you’re working towards something you’re passionate about.’ I anticipate another rehearsed speech about her love of perfume to ensue, but instead she once again surprises me. ‘When I was a younger, I worked at Pulbrook and Gould (the florist), and I earned £28.15 a week. I’d fallen in love with a pair of boots I’d seen, so I saved for months to buy them. When I finally got them, I loved them more than anything. Often in life, we need to work for something we really love.’
46
Jo Malone.indd 46
11/12/2012 19:24
These words would usually sound trite, but coming from Jo there’s a touching sincerity to them. It’s enough to inspire you to venture into the world of business yourself, I tell her. ‘You probably know more than you realise,’ she says, humouring me. ‘I do find that women, because they run homes, already have that business mentality unbeknown to them.’ So what advice would she given then to aspiring entrepreneurs? ‘Don’t try and be all things to all men, know your strengths and run your business like you would your household – don’t buy what you can’t afford. Using the limited resources you have to hand can result in wonderful creativity,’ she says, her voice animated. I’ve obviously found that soft spot. She chuckles, ‘When I’m running creatively, it’s one of those moments which makes you realise how good life is. And I think I deserve to enjoy it because, my God, I’ve fought for it!’ I reassure her, smiling. Don’t worry about that, Jo. It’s more than deserved. Jo Malone is founder of JO LOVES joloves.com

Smile like you mean it
ABSOLUTELY REVEAL THE SECRETS TO A SHOW-STOPPING SMILE I LOVE STRAIGHT TEETH
S
ince the recent announcement that a royal baby is on its way, Kate’s definitely got something to smile about. But what is it that makes her smile look so good? Absolutely reveals the reason in our exclusive free guide to getting a sensational smile in just a few months. The ultimate beauty accessory, it never goes out of fashion. Unfortunately, having a sparkling smile used to entail the unwelcome prospect of visiting an old-fashioned, scary dentist. This would involve enduring two years of pain and misery, not to mention the unsightly appearance and embarrassment of a brace. But these years of torture can now be a thing of the past. Kate Middleton prepared for her big day in the spotlight by having her teeth
discreetly straightened using a technique to create perfectly ‘imperfect’ details called microrotations. Other celebrities who have had cosmetic teeth straightening are Holly Willoughby and Myleene Klass. To make it simple there are three main treatments that can deliver an A-list smile in just a few months. The Front Smile Aligner is a removable teeth-straightening gadget perfect for improving the upper or lower front teeth. The Six Month I.C.E brace is an ice white discreet brace that can handle even tougher cases. And the Hidden i360 is a clever hidden brace that sits behind your teeth working invisibly while you get on with your day. With these cunning treatments you too could have a straight smile by Summer 2013. For Absolutely readers ilovestraightteeth. co.uk – a resource produced by Putney’s very own Alkali Dental Studios – is offering a free guide explaining all about this exciting
new treatment. Cosmetic Dentist Dr Aalok Y Shukla, founder of Alkali Dental Studios & ilovestraightteeth, noticed more and more adults coming to visit him from all over London, and many more who would have loved the treatment but just didn’t know it was possible. He wrote this guide as he found people were confused and unaware of what could be done for them. So, if you are thinking of getting a straighter smile why not email hello@alkaliaesthetics.co.uk and ask for your free guide to straight teeth in just a few months? For anyone aiming for straighter teeth by July 2013, ilovestraightteeth has teamed up with Absolutely to offer five A-List Whitening Bonus packages worth £499 with their braces package. I
PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO REVISIT ANTIQUES AND RECONCEPTUALISE THEIR AESTHETIC MERITS
n the sleepy world of antiques, something is stirring. What was once exclusively the domain of the middle-aged middle class has suddenly become cool again. Open any glossy magazine and you’ll spot them in the adverts, nestled amongst the season’s haute couture. It’s a duality which has become increasingly compatible, juxtaposing the old and the new. But it’s not just happening in the world of fashion – the decorative arts have also followed suit. All of a sudden, people are starting to revisit antiques and reconceptualise the aesthetic merits of historic objects. Forget 18th century ormolu cabinets and heavy mahogany dressers, we’re not talking about Granny’s furniture here. Instead of polished perfection, the focus has shifted onto historic objects which show their story through their imperfections. ‘What’s popular now are the kind of objects which have texture and character, the kind of things which make you want to touch them,’ claims Robert Young, owner of Robert Young Antiques on Battersea Bridge Road. ‘A textured surface attracts your aesthetic attention because it denotes a narrative of use. It is both engaging and totally unique.’ To get this uniqueness, people are turning to the past. A limited resource, historic objects are capable of reflecting the individuality of a person because, like them, they are one of a kind. ‘People believe
it says something about them that they saw something beautiful in that object, which becomes a physical manifestation of their personality,’ explains Young. In turn, the commonplace has become anathema creating a universal rejection of the mass-produced, flat pack furniture which dominates many homes. In the same way that no one wants to turn up to a party wearing the same outfit as someone else, so too do people not want to walk into a friend’s flat and see a bookcase identical to the one that they have at home. It is this desire for uniqueness which draws people to antiques. Yet this individuality has also ironically been mass-produced too. Clever companies such as Mykea have been cashing in on the reaction against the monotonous uniformity of flatpack furniture by offering a service which personalises your Ikea purchases. Using specially designed stickers created by various artists, it claims to put an end to ‘naked’ furniture. Meanwhile, manufacturers have been attempting to mass-produce the individuality of texture, as seen in the ‘shabby chic’ interiors on the high street.
The irony is not lost on Young. ‘An original surface which has texture is non-repeatable. It’s like driftwood, a work of art largely created by nature. It cannot be replicated by a factory.’ Going hand-in-hand with the trend for texture is upcycling, another creative way of achieving the unique. This involves reinventing a salvaged item into a new object with a new purpose. The necessity of one generation becomes the luxury of the next as previously outdated items are transformed into current and contemporary sculpture. ‘It’s about taking something and making it your own,’ says Young, ‘and turning it into something totally unique.’ Flying the flag for both the current focus on texture and upcycling is another big trend – bringing the outdoors indoors. Take for example a Regency two-seater iron bench. Made for an 1820s English Garden, it looks wonderful positioned in a modern interior because of its lines and texture. Similarly weather vanes, which were made to stand on the top of garden follys, are now somewhat obsolete, yet indoors they bring a contemporary sculptural feel with the rust, adding a wonderful texture. Whether its down to texture, history or reinvention, pieces that are unique will always appeal. Offering as much of a cerebral investment as a materialistic one, their charm lies in the fact that they only improve with time; the years only serve to add to their story. 59

Robbie Honey gives his top tip for the month
With a scent evoking the promise of spring, ‘Daphne Odora’ tops my list of favourite seasonal bloomers. In mid-winter, it’s an absolute delight, offering pale pink flowers with a wonderful lemony jasmine scent that is utterly sublime. The cultivar ‘Aureomarginata’ has leaves with a particularly pretty variegation. ‘Daphne Odora’ grows well in borders and performs well in a container too, making it perfect for adding some winter colour to an entrance or along a pathway. Despite being slow to grow, they are definitely worth the time investment. An excellent addition to any garden, encountering the heavenly scent of a Daphne on a January afternoon is, for me, a rare botanical joy. Jamie Oliver ABSOLUTELY TALKS TO THE MAN BEHIND OUR FAVOURITE BATTERSEA COOKERY SCHOOL, RECIPEASE
You’ve had a huge influence in the way that the public think about food, from school dinners, to encouraging people to cook. What has been the proudest moment of your career so far? I think getting half a billion quid out of the British government for school food back in 2005/6 was a high point. I am worried about all that hard work being undone at the moment with the Coalition not making sure that Academies follow the nutritional standards we all fought for. To be honest, there are so many proud moments; when Fifteen restaurant opened in 2002, that was another one that stands out – it was incredible and the fact that we’re still training young people ten years later is so inspiring. Every time I go to one of the graduation days in London, Cornwall or Amsterdam (where we also have restaurants), it’s always an emotional time. But I’ve got loads still to do and so I hope there will be more memorable moments to come. Who are your culinary heroes? There are so many. Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers, of course; also Gennaro Contaldo, the Italian Stallion and my mentor; Alice Walters and Keith Floyd. I would have loved to have met Keith – for me, he embodied everything that’s exciting about cooking.
also trying to have as many Fridays off as I can this year. During the week Jools is the cook and she’s become really good over the years. I couldn’t say whose food the kids prefer, I’d get in trouble. Do you have a guilty food pleasure? Green and Black’s chocolate, although it is an occasional treat. Can you tell us about your biggest kitchen disaster? That would have to be the welldocumented Valentine’s Day mishap many years ago when I tried to cook naked for my wife and ended up scalding myself with hot steam in a delicate area.
Three ingredients you couldn’t survive without? I’m a chilli freak so I couldn’t live without a bit of heat, and then probably some good quality extra virgin olive oil and definitely lemon. Having a family and being so busy yourself, who does the cooking at home? And whose food do the children prefer? I do the cooking when I’m there, which is usually the weekends, although I am
Was there a meal that changed your life? Probably the one I was preparing at the River Café back in 1998 when I got filmed by the documentary TV crew. When the show ended up on TV, I started getting phone calls from TV producers wanting to make a series with just me and – to cut a long story short – the naked chef was born. What is your earliest food memory? The smell of mum’s roast chicken on a Sunday. Recipease 48-50 St John’s Road, Battersea, SW11 020 3006 0001 recipease.com 69

The Rookery
LOOK: New York’s Lower East Side meets Clapham Common’s South Side in this speakeasy-style gastro pub serving ‘simple, seasonal food’. VIBE: Snug – and perfect for a chilly winter’s evening. FOOD: Excellent. Tender yet perfectly crisp salt-hake croquettes with aioli kicked off the meal. A generously portioned Blue d’Auvergne macaroni cheese, kale and roast veg swiftly followed with an inspired topping of walnut crumb. Lastly, the apple and sultana crumble with custard proved the final jewel in the crown – handmade and so warming that it conjures up memories of evenings beside a crackling fire in the country. DRINK: The manager was super impressive, rivalling any fine-dining sommelier with his wised-up rundown of the wine menu. VERDICT: Cosy and cool with cracking food. LA MANCHA TUCK IN TO TASTY TAPAS AT THIS LOCAL FAVOURITE
W
alking along Putney High Street, you’d be forgiven for missing La Mancha. In fact, when I tell my date where we’re going he has absolutely no idea what I’m talking about. It’s easy to understand, what with La Mancha’s dimly-lit marbled exterior being somewhat overshadowed by the bar next door. Most people who aren’t from the area probably do just walk on by. The locals must be delighted. You see, La Mancha is a local institution, being one of the most popular restaurants in Putney. Yes, the décor is nothing to write home about but that’s because the focus here is well and truly on the food. Offering authentic, unpretentious Spanish cuisine in a laid-back atmosphere, it fills up quickly as the night goes on with groups of friends looking to catch up over dinner. The menu is slightly daunting to say the least, with its overwhelmingly long list of tapas as well as larger dishes. Luckily the friendly staff are on hand to provide recommendations and our waiter also helps us choose a wonderfully spicy red Marqués de Cáceres Rioja. However, there’s an absolutely enormous bar as you walk in the
door, so if cocktails are more you’re thing, you’re spoilt for choice. La Mancha is renowned for its amazing paella, so we order a tapas dish of the Paella Valenciana – a moreish medley of succulent meat and seafood which we could have eaten all night. Alongside this, we opt for some big juicy Gambas al Ajillo and the Pinchito de Ternera, a skewered fillet steak in a honeymustard sauce served with peppers, onions and aubergine crisps drizzled in a sweet, balsamic glaze. Our waiter also recommends the Berenjenas de Verano, a deliciously gooey dish filled with roasted aubergine, peppers, tomato and melted cheese. The portions are more than generous, so we decide to share an indulgent Tartufo Nero for dessert. We leave feeling deliciously satisfied, telling anyone who’ll listen that after tonight, there’ll be two more locals fighting for a table. 32 Putney High Street, SW15, 020 8780 1022; lamancha.co.uk 71

After over-indulging at Christmas, there seems to be widespread panic in January. There’s a flurry of gym subscriptions and month-long detox plans as people nervously step onto the scales. At our venues, we’ve tried to embrace this time with a sense of fun. If you don’t fancy hours on the cross trainer then why not try one of the greatest remedial drinks, ‘The Bloody Mary’? At our speakeasy bar, Barts, we’re introducing an entire menu dedicated to these wonderful concoctions using delicious Bloodshot Vodka, which blends the perfect mix of spice and vodka. Or alternatively why not try a ‘Bloody Liability’, a heady mix of Belvedere Vodka, Bloodshot, fresh beetroot, fresh lemon juice, honey and a garnish of green salad topped with beetroot and Parmesan shavings. With all that veg, surely this cocktail has to be good for you! Charlie owns and runs several venues in SW London. inception-group.com

FOOD & TRAVEL THE HOTEL
Devilish to find though it may be, visitors to Maison Talbooth quickly swap exasperation for delight as they note with relief upon arrival that this place is well worth any battle with the Sat Nav. Something of a trailblazer, the hotel opened 40 years ago to much fanfare on account of having been one of the first truly boutique offerings in the country – and happily its reputation has never dwindled. Cosy flagstone floors throughout, comfortable yet grand reception rooms and exceptionally warm hospitality make Maison Talbooth an utter joy. Staff will happily run guests down to the nearby town of Dedham Vale, which is not only all Georgian elegance itself, but is also the gateway to Constable country walks along the River Stour to Flatford Mill.

THE SPA
Each room is named is named after a literary hero (Browning, Wordsworth, Kipling, Shakespeare etc), and so duly, we settle in to Shelley, whose elegant windows, chandelier and beautifully comfortable bed make it a sublime melange of the grand and the cosy. There are, of course, anthologies of the great man’s poetry lying about to further inspire.
The spa is a source of great pride at La Maison Talbooth – and it’s easy to see why. Situated in the Pool House, the expert therapists use Dermalogica products and a soothing manner to ensure you spend a pleasingly soporific time here. For those hardier than we were, the outdoor pool is worth a plunge – but is perhaps most inviting during the warmer months.

THE BEDROOM
Equal in size to the bedroom – which is saying something – its vast proportions accommodate an enormous bath/Jacuzzi slap-bang in the middle of the room, as well as an excellent power shower. There’s an abundance of fluff y white towels and robes, as you would expect in a place as luxurious as this.

Le Talbooth – just a short drive from the main hotel, which the staff are happy to drop off and collect from – is a grand timber-framed building where the excellence of the riverside setting is matched by the menu. Combining AngloFrench cuisine, which includes dishes like Colchester crab ravioli and cumin roasted scallops to start, followed by breast of Creedy Carver duck, local provenance is essential here. There’s an excellent list of both old and new world wines at prices for all pockets. Meanwhile, do try the avocado and chilli with rye bread at breakfast (served in the main hotel); it has a sublime kick and is just the thing to start the day. It is little surprise then that it should be so covered in awards and accolades, including the 2002 Conde Nast Johansen Guide Award for Restaurant of the Year. 75

TSCHUGGEN GRAND HOTEL, AROSA
Otto Herwig came to Arosa in 1883. He was recovering from a lung condition and he needed clean mountain air to recuperate. It must have worked because he set up the Berghilf Sanatorium for lung patients in 1892. And so, Arosa became primarily a place for bronchial sufferers until the winter season of 1929/1930, when it transformed into the Tschuggen Grand Hotel. Now, apart from Mario Botta’s new 43,000 sq/ ft spa, the peace and quiet and fresh air of the little mountain-top village has hardly changed. The hotel lies at the top of a winding road and, when it finally comes into view, it’s like some secret place surrounded by pine trees that’s just sitting in the side of a mountain, waiting to be discovered by errant travellers. As well as taking on Mario Botta’s architectural vision, Carlo Rampazzi has recently been entrusted as designer of the rooms and, my word, it feels like you’re in an artist’s vivid dream. Huge, taller-thanneeded headboards with individually decorated squares, colourful-patterned ceilings, high-back chairs and, in the south-facing rooms, just the panoramic gloriousness of the Alps. With 400 sq/ft to walk around in the smallest room, space isn’t exactly lacking, and the adjoining bathroom with marble-covered surfaces and heated floor is amazing. The spa triumphs: hot and cold pools, 12 treatment rooms, Swedish and Turkish saunas, a Jacuzzi… any sore joints after a hard day’s skiing will be well and truly loosened up. To add to this, the newly-built Tschuggen Express takes 12 people straight from the hotel onto the mountain in two and half minutes. The amount of times mornings have turned into mayhem with the disorganisation of assembling skis and heading to the chair lifts – that hassle is, thankfully, completely gone. en.tschuggen.ch 77

Overlooking the serene St Moritz lake, Badrutt’s Palace is perfectly located to enjoy the vistas – and facilities – of the surrounding Engadin Valley. This Swiss ski haven was, at one time, just a summer retreat. In the 1860s, no one wanted to brave the St Moritz winter, so Caspar Badrutt made a bet with five rich Englishmen that if they stayed for the winter and didn’t enjoy themselves, he would foot the bill. If they enjoyed themselves, however, they would pay and spread the word. Needless to say, Badrutt won the bet and word did indeed spread. Fast. The only difference now being that Badrutt’s Palace has kept advancing with the times, yet maintains its historic foundations. Despite its size and hints of its lavish past, there is no sense of vulgarity. It’s just pure beauty. badruttspalace.com

ravelling to Greece when the headlines scream doom and gloom doesn’t feel quite right. Or is it? Are we supporting a dying economy with our imported pounds or exploiting a disastrous situation? What about rioting and will people resent us? We weren’t sure. The travel industry assures us that it’s fine, safe and a good idea to visit Greece. And anyway, it seems that there’s Greece, and there’s Corfu. In Corfu, it’s business as usual, from the bustling airport to the tourist trail. Corfu is a place that relies so heavily on tourism that there’s little industry here that’s not fuelled by it in some way, from big hotels to shops selling snorkels and lilos, and if we all stayed away there would be no economy at all. The same applies to most of the islands
and much of the mainland too, thanks to its beautiful, craggy coastline, sunny climate and decades of tourist-friendly development. Marbella Beach is one of the island’s finest hotels (the confusing name refers to its beautiful beach, not the entirely unrelated Spanish resort) and it’s a large, hilltop structure, spread over an irregular-shaped site, an easy half-hour taxi ride from Corfu’s airport. While we are in the taxi, my phone rings. ‘Ms Harte? I’m afraid you’re going to miss dinner, but would you like us to set something up in your room for you? Do the children have any preferences?’ Someone at reception has clearly been reading my mind. The children haven’t eaten and it is getting late. This feels like a good start to a week that’s designed to be undemanding and indulgent. We arrive in our deluxe family suite to find, as promised, a meal laid out for four,

complete with – oh joy – a bottle of wine, plus mini desserts for the children. Switching off the extreme air-conditioning and opening the (two) balcony doors, we acclimatise to the fiercely warm evening air and wonder what the view will hold when the sun rises. Though not huge, our accommodation is cleverly designed for a family of four: there’s a children’s bedroom with its own bathroom, a living area with a sofa and outsize television, plus a main bedroom with a second outsize television (our girls are very impressed with this. Two televisions!) and a decadent-sized bathroom. When the sun does rise, it reveals spectacular views from both balconies. We can look down over the hotel’s manicured gardens to the beach and along the luscious coastline. And because of the angle of the rooms, and the lack of internal doors, we can see the sea from anywhere in the suite,
including the bathroom. It’s a well-equipped arrangement; we have an espresso machine, a constantly refilled fruit bowl, a mass of toiletries, an extravagance of towels and a well-stocked mini bar. You can hire a car and tour the island easily from Marbella Beach, and a day in Corfu Town is definitely not to be missed, but if you’re here for a week as a family there’s ample amusement to be had without leaving the hotel. There are five swimming pools, for a start, and access to the beach (clear water and quite good snorkelling) is down some rocky steps. We spend the week wafting from meal to meal via the pools, the beach and our balcony, with a few visits to the gym and some of the planned activities – we avoid pool aerobics (too comical) but enjoy archery, while our daughters (age six and three) love the daily mini club, run by the energetic and lovely Steffi, who takes everybody’s children off their hands for a very welcome two hours every afternoon. You can never be hungry at Marbella Beach. Mealtimes comprise an all-encompassing spread and the buffet offers a schizophrenic abundance of international favourites in a dining room that overlooks the sea. For children, it’s heaven. Left to their own devices they can have coco pops and pain au chocolat for breakfast, followed by spaghetti and chips
for lunch and dinner. For us, ultimately, the most delicious things were the simplest and most local – yoghurt and honey, for instance, and tomatoes and feta. Every evening brings entertainment that ranges from the bizarre but more hilarious than you’d expect (an Eastern European Beatles tribute band) to the fun for all the family (fire-eaters on the beach). If you wanted to eat out every night, you’d have to hire a car since there’s nowhere really to walk to, but this is a family holiday and it’s hugely convenient to stay put. Moreover there’s a kids disco every single evening and who could bear to miss that? With its beautifully kept grounds and spacious feel, Marbella Beach offers proper relaxation. It may be large, but it doesn’t feel crowded; it may be family-oriented but it’s not full of screaming brats. It retains a calm, almost otherworldly feel while catering quietly to your every need.
IF YOU’RE HERE FOR A WEEK AS A FAMILY THERE’S AMPLE AMUSEMENT TO BE HAD WITHOUT LEAVING THE HOTEL
Classic Collection Holidays (classiccollection.co.uk; 0800 294 918) offers 7 nights at Marbella Beach Hotel, Corfu from £570 per person in May 2013. GEORGE FRANKS, SALES DIRECTOR, DOUGLAS & GORDON PHOTOGRAPHY: ARMAND HOUGH, IAMFOTOGRAFIE.COM
ike a lot of people my age who have been in the business longer than they care to remember, I never actually planned to be an estate agent. My CV had many jobs including graphic designer, a short time in recruitment and a slightly longer period working as an insurance broker for Howson F Devitt & Sons in the city. To be honest, UK liabilities were not the most fascinating of things to broke and as my office was being moved to Maidstone, I packed it all in and travelled the world. I came back from the Southern Hemisphere to a country which was not financially dissimilar to how we find it now and I managed to scrape a job as an estate agent. For an ambitious young man it all seemed pretty good really. Although you worked for another company, you were very much your own boss and you were as successful as the hours that you put in and the effort that you made. I always wonder why, when estate agents are interviewed, they make a point of saying how long they have been in the business. To be honest, I believe it makes no difference at all how long anyone has been an estate agent. In fact, I think sometimes if you have been an estate agent too long you can have old habits which die hard. The bottom line is, if you can sell you can sell. At Douglas & Gordon you will be relieved to hear that we no longer throw people in at the deep end like I was. We train our negotiators up to the nth degree and we all have to have the relevant NAEA qualifications. Still, the premise is the same. Whichever way you cut it this is a selling job. My children would see it as the memory game; turning cards over until you get a match. In my role as head of sales for Douglas & Gordon, I spend my life going from office to office enjoying and experiencing different parts of London, but I’m afraid my heart will always belong to the area around Clapham Common. I have run our Battersea Park office, Abbeville Road office and also our Northcote Road branch in my time and I have always enjoyed not only the patch, but the people in it.
Between the commons is very much seen as a nappy valley. During the day mothers and fathers push and sometimes pull their young children up and down the street, dipping into the wealth of fashionable shops which now line the road. Had I written this ten or fifteen years ago and stated to people that an LK Bennett, Cath Kidston or a Jack Wills shop would open here people would have raised an eyebrow at me and sidled silently away, but now it seems as though these shops are part of the furniture and they fit in just as they should. Northcote Road in the evening changes dramatically. The bars at the Battersea Rise end of the street come alive and whilst the kids are dreaming or worrying about their homework, the generation above them are swigging beer and white wine into the early hours. There is a vibrant young scene that descends onto the street. They disembark their trains at Clapham Junction and walk through a rather grotty underpass. It never ceases to amaze me how little love the busiest railway station in the world receives. What is charming about the area is that there is a real community spirit as old and new timers happily co-exist as residents and businesses. I am a particular fan of Tony’s Café; his fat bread bacon sandwiches are legendary and I thoroughly enjoy an Italian lunch at Numero Uno. Oliver Bonas is well worth a stocking filler at this time of year, especially for useless husbands, followed by a glass of something warming at the Bolingbroke. On a nice day it is lovely to take a sandwich up to the centre of Clapham Common, weaving your way between roads of terraced houses that are hugely popular and making more and more demands on peoples wallets. As you get there the noises of London fade into the distance and you are only disturbed by the planes flying in from exotic climes, making you jealously wonder how long the passport queues are at Heathrow. Schadenfreude is a German word, but such an English pastime! 020 7924 2000; douglasandgordon.com

SANTA COMES TO TOWN
JONATHAN DYSON, MANAGER OF HAMPTONS BATTERSEA WANDSWORTH ‘The evening was an epic success and the transformation of the Hamptons board room into Santa’s grotto really was extraordinary. We had kids entertainers, face painters, carol singers and fire engines up and down Northcote Road and Hamptons were very much the epicentre of it all. To give you an idea of how it went, we went through over 500 balloons, two tanks of helium, 400 Santa’s presents and even managed to raise a few quid for a local charity. At one point the queue to see Father Christmas went out of the front door, down the block and around the corner at the end. We had about 40 or 50 buggies parked outside the office and I reckon we must have had nearly a thousand people through the office over the three hour period. The feedback on www.nappyvalley.net has been overwhelmingly positive so we are already making plans to revive the summer carnival and see if we can make next year’s Christmas lights even better.’ 020 7411 9965; hamptons.co.uk
PASSING ON THE TORCH
The businesses and residents of Bellevue Road bid a fond farewell to Knight Frank’s Luke Pender-Cudlip. After 6 successful years in Wandsworth, Luke is heading home to the West Country to captain the Knight Frank Sherbourne office. Luke’s legacy has been left in the capable hands of Sam Sproston, whose property experience spans two decades. Beginning his career in Clapham Old Town, Sam moved on to the exquisite Georgian properties of St John’s Wood. Since coming back to his south-west London roots he has delivered noteworthy results amongst the prime Wandsworth market, setting numerous £1000+ per square foot records. Sam is thrilled to be leading an already respected and successful team who are all very excited about what 2013 and beyond may bring. Last month Waterstones in Putney Exchange hosted the launch of local photographer Andrew Wilson’s new book Wild About Putney sponsored by Warren, the Putney Estate Agent. A throng of Putney residents gathered together to review the book, accompanied with sparkling wine and canapés – courtesy of Andrew and Warren. This attractive, coffee table book is crammed full of splendid photographs of the area and as an added bonus some of the photographs have been reproduced in a special Warren ‘Wild About Putney’ calendar for 2013 – an ideal Christmas gift. The calendars are available in the Warren Upper Richmond Road office at a cost of £5.00 each, with all proceeds going to ‘Wellbeing of Women’, a charity dedicated to improving the health of women and babies across the UK. Mike Crowther, Managing Partner at Warren, comments: ‘As the leading local Agent we are keen to champion the merits of Putney and its environs. We are delighted to be able to offer a calendar that celebrates the many attractions of the area while at the same time supporting a worthwhile charitable cause.’

ALEX OPPENHEIM, MANAGER OF JOHN D WOOD & CO. IN BATTERSEA
FIVE MINUTES WITH ... NATASHA NORTHMORE, CHAMBERLAND RESIDENTIAL How long have you been an estate agent? I have been working within the industry for just over 3 years now having been at Chamberland Residential from the moment it opened its doors. Although I have only been here two years, I feel like I have already come very far and learnt so much more working so closely with the owner of Chamberland, Nicole. It’s something I am very proud of and grateful for. What is it about your area that you love? I love that there is always loads of activity and different things to do in Putney, especially as I grew up in the middle of nowhere. It’s really lovely down by the river and Putney has so much to offer. The nightlife isn’t bad either! What’s your speciality? My role at Chamberland Residential is Senior Property Consultant but I think my speciality and the part I enjoy the most is the customer service side of things actually showing prospective tenants around the properties. I’m a people person which is an essential skill to have in this business. What’s your best ever deal? The best deals I have done aren’t necessarily the ones that are the most financially rewarding, but ones where the applicants are really grateful you have found them a nice home. There have been 1 or 2 occasions where people have been let down by other agents with a property and are desperate to move…I’m always happy to help. What’s your favourite type of property to let? I quite enjoy letting properties that have a lot to offer or have quirky features. This might be due to its location, the view or other unique selling points; something that catches the interest of the people viewing. Letting properties that are close to the High Street are always good as well as they generate a lot of interest easily. What’s your favourite property on your books at the moment? West Hill in Putney, a truly unique two double bedroom conversion flat set within a beautiful period house (pictured £2,800 per calendar month). 0208 704 1313; chamberlandres.co.uk
Favourite restaurant Santa Maria del Sur on Queenstown Road, for the discerning carnivore. Their large bloody steaks are sensational – apparently the lettuce and tomato salad is good as well, but I cannot confirm that! Best all washed down with good strong Malbec. Most stylish boutique Fashion and I have never had a comfortable relationship and at the risk of answering the question I want to answer and not the one in front of me, I do recommend Pure Stitch on Battersea Park Road, their shirt folding service is second to none! Finest cocktail Bunga Bunga on Battersea Bridge Road has a cocktail called the Horse’s Head which comes in a vessel in the shape of...yes, you guessed it! Alternatively, the fail safe Mojito! Best kept secret If you are a coffee hound then Battersea Delice on Battersea Park Road does unrivalled coffee – word of warning, definitely no more than one double espresso a day unless you want to be buzzing! Lost hour It would have to be Battersea Park of course, year round fun and games, especially come the summer, take a picnic and go to the Jazz evenings. An exceptional Property We have a brace of houses on Cambridge Road, which is moments away from Battersea Park, one has a spa and cinema room, the other has been designed with entertaining very much in mind. £2,750,000 020 7228 0174; johndwood.co.uk 99

It wasn’t unusual to see shire horses with drays trotting around the local area, delivering beer from the Young’s Ram Brewery in the centre of Wandsworth. Traditional draught beer was produced on the site from 1581 to 2006. This has all ceased but it is likely the site will be redeveloped. I’d recommend Battersea Park Zoo which is a great favourite with my children, particularly the Meerkat enclosure with its viewing dome. MEMORY LANE Hambalt Road, Clapham, SW4 £1,185,000
David Kirkup of aspire’s Clapham South office talks to a vendor recalling happy memories of living in this beautiful house on Hambalt Road. How long have you lived at your property? I moved into the property in 2010. What do you like most about living in Clapham? I love the community feel of Clapham and the fact that people are genuinely friendly. I also like that there’s always lots to do without having to travel far to do it!
Where did you draw inspiration from for the design/interior of your property? I’ve moved around quite a fair bit and each house has been very different in style and décor. This house feels clean without seeming too much like a show home – this is a real home, which feels comfy and lived-in. Most importantly a relaxing place to be.
Did you install any special features in the property? I didn’t install them but I love the bi-fold doors. They draw the outside in which is lovely on a summer’s day or during the winter. They allow so much light into the room.

12/12/2012 12:55
Are there any further changes or developments you would’ve made had you stayed at the property? I don’t think so. There is plenty of space so there’s no need for a loft conversion or such like.
What do your children love about the house? My child is a grown up child now but loves the warmth and happiness of the place – we’ve enjoyed many a good party here with much-loved friends and family.
What’s your favourite room in the house? The kitchen/dining area – there is so much space to cook, entertain or relax with a good book.
What will you miss the most when you move? How much fun it’s been living here and the community feel of Clapham.
What’s your favourite memory at your house? I don’t have one particular favourite. It’s been great to be able to share the house with loved ones – Christmases spent here have been wonderful.

Market Reports
AT A GLANCE
Lawrence Hall of Zoopla.co.uk says, ‘While the property market has seen a flat market in terms of prices over the last 12 months, South West London has been one of the few areas where home owners have seen property values on an upward trajectory. The average home in South West London is now worth 6.8% more than it was twelve months ago. Popular family areas like in Clapham (SW4) and Balham (SW12) have performed particularly well with rises of 7.54% and 7.46% respectively. And Tooting (SW17) has also seen healthy average value growth as buyers hoping to live in South West London look slightly further out in order to find more affordable options.’ zoopla.co.uk South West London Property Prices 2012 in Review 640,000

WORD ON THE STREET DANIEL TURNER, SALES MANAGER AT FEATHERSTONE LEIGH BATTERSEA
Daniel Turner, Sales Manager at Featherstone Leigh Battersea, comments, ‘2012 saw exceptionally high demand in both our sales and lettings departments, which resulted in some very good prices being achieved for our clients. Battersea and Wandsworth have always been popular places to buy and rent DANIEL TURNER

amongst young professionals and families. I anticipate next year to be as busy as 2012, as the economy gradually improves and moves out of the recession, with demand remaining high and prices continuing to rise. 020 7228 2278; featherstoneleigh.co.uk
JAMES THORNETT, REGIONAL LETTINGS DIRECTOR AT KINLEIGH FOLKARD & HAYWARD
Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward saw further signs of improvement to the lettings market in 2012 with rents across the group’s London network of branches seeing average increases of 5% compared with 2011. In addition, the average monthly rental price achieved was £1,538 in comparison to £1,476 the previous year. Interestingly, a number of areas in South West London outperformed this 5% increase quite significantly with Balham and Tooting both realising increases of 8%. Along with increased rental prices, tenancy lengths also rose with the average length of tenancy at KFH rising from 14
to 15 months. James Thornett, Regional Lettings Director at Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward comments, ‘The lettings market in London is experiencing huge amounts of growth as it becomes increasingly difficult for buyers to get onto the property ladder. We’re noticing rises particularly in areas that were once less popular and this ‘overspill’ is becoming increasingly prevalent as the traditional ‘core’ rental areas become too expensive for many tenants.’ kfh.co.uk

HAMPTONS BALHAM, A VIEW FROM BOTH SIDES RACHEL HANNIQUET-BROOKING, LETTINGS MANAGER
RACHEL HANNIQUET-BROOKING
2012 has been an exciting year for Hamptons International within the local area. We have opened additional branches in both Wandsworth/Battersea and Balham and looking towards 2013 we expect the interest in properties around Balham, Streatham & Tooting to grow further as tenants seek better value in Zone 2 & 3 locations. We also expect demand to increase further from young professionals who are unable to access owner-occupation at this time. Our corporate and relocation departments have supplied us with unprecedented levels of enquiries and we continue to place families and professionals into our local properties. Whilst traditionally corporate relocations are associated with just the big family houses, in 2012 we saw a large increase in 1 bed & 2 bed placements. The balance of rental supply in some locations will temper growth in rents creating localised movements in average rents. If 2013 starts as we fi nished in 2012 it looks like the team will have a very busy year ahead. hamptons.co.uk Lettings: 020 8970 7004
RICHARD HUMPHRIES
RICHARD HUMPHREYS, SALES MANAGER
If a single word represented the 2011 budget speech, it was ‘austerity’. In 2012 it was probably ‘fairness’. Next year, especially with regard to the property market the focus will be all about ‘delivery’. The property market in general has probably more downside risks next year as opposed to strong improvement, however, overall we’d suggest that there will be a more positive slant to things versus 2012, and that these risks are not expected to fully materialise. Although the stagnant house price performance over the past 2 years is expected to broadly continue in 2013, we believe that there are more reasons to be optimistic than pessimistic over the medium-term. Prime central London has been negatively impacted by Government changes to SDLT (Stamp Duty Land Tax), that goes without saying. With proposals to introduce an Annual Charge and changes to CGT (Capital Gains Tax) for £2 million+ properties both looming large, we are overall forecasting a conservatively flat 2013. hamptons.co.uk Sales: 020 8970 7002
HOUSE HUNTING
WITH KARL MARTIN, MANAGER OF ELLISONS, WIMBLEDON THE MOST SATISFYING TRANSACTION I’VE HAD...
This would be a recent sale of The Villa in Wimbledon Village, a beautiful detached Victorian house which was on the market at £4.3 million. It was great to be involved with the original sale of the house as it was previously a Nuns Convent – we also had to find a new suitable residence for the nuns to build a New Convent.
MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY I’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN...
An Edwardian semi detached house in Wimbledon. When I first visited the house I did wonder why there were so many security. Finally we found out the name of the old owner and it became apparent that he may have been involved in dealing contraband. To my surprise
I later spotted the aforementioned man on national television, featured in the top 10 most wanted men on the run in Europe!
THE PROPERTY I WOULD LIKE MOST ON MY BOOKS...
Definitely another Victorian double fronted house on Kings or Dudley road similar to the one we have just placed under offer. They are highly desirable houses with period features, large gardens and glorious views across South Park. Which are consistently setting new record prices in the area.
MOST UNUSUAL INTERIOR...
A fantastic spacious ground floor Victorian conversion flat. The owner had removed all of the period features, exposed all of the brick work and reinforced steel joists. They had flag stones on all
of the floors and had created what felt like an art gallery. It was an absolutely fabulous flat.
I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE...
After being asked to value a prestigious property in a favoured part of Wimbledon close to the Village, I never thought I would be greeted with such a large selection of specialised toys randomly placed around the flat! Someone had forgotton to clear up after a special party! Putting on my professional face I totally disregarded said items and valued the apartment which later sold without the toys. 020 8944 9494; ellisons.uk.com 121

ROLAND SIMPSON, SALES MANAGER OF JACKSON-STOPS & STAFF WIMBLEDON VILLAGE, PRESENTS CHURCHBURY HOUSE, WINDMILL ROAD, SW19, £3,500,000 FREEHOLD A wonderful five bedroom house nestled on the edge of Wimbledon Common on Windmill Road, close to Wimbledon Village. Set within secluded walled gardens of just under an acre and accessed by a private driveway, this discreet location perfectly compliments such an extremely impressive house. Windmill Road nearly became the spot of residence to the fifth Earl Spencer. He announced plans to build himself a manor house enclosing Wimbledon Common and the site of the mill, however, local opposition led to a legal battle lasting six years. This was finally resolved by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act of 1871 which handed over the commons to the local community. Having been built at the end of the 19thCentury and being Grade II listed the property is naturally imbued with a sense of grandeur. 0208 879 6699; jackson-stops.co.uk

OUR MANOR ABOUNDS WITH HISTORIC HOMES, ABSOLUTELY ROLLS BACK THE YEARS CHARLES WELLER, DIRECTOR OF PALACE GATE LETTINGS, PRESENTS TYNEHAM ROAD, SW11, £400 PER WEEK A newly refurbished two bedroom Victorian cottage available in the Shaftesbury Estate, just moments from Clapham Junction. The Shaftesbury Estate is named after The Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, the nineteenth century philanthropist. In August 1872, Shaftesbury visited Battersea and laid the foundation-stone of the buildings at the estate. Nearly 1,200 architecturally similar style two-storey houses were built in the following year with gardens laid out in wide tree-lined streets. The area came to be known as ‘Workman’s Town’, known for the feeling of kinship there between the neighbours. The terraced house has a large open plan living room and kitchen, rear patio garden, two double bedrooms and one bathroom with a bath and separate shower cubicle. 0207 978 4404; palacegatelettings.com

PROPERTY BEN IRENS, PARTNER OF TRINDLE RYMER IRENS, ON THE BENEFITS OF LIVING IN A PEACEFUL AREA The Magdalen Estate is a peaceful and quiet part of Wandsworth Common. Set back behind the more wooded section of Wandsworth Common (popular for the local dog-walkers) to the west of The Trinity Road, the area is made up of attractive, primarily Edwardian houses of all shapes and sizes. It is an area perfect for young families too as children can play safely and the majority of the gardens are large, mature and secluded – it is easy to forget where you are when all you hear are leaves blowing in the wind, or children playing. With its quiet residential roads, well-proportioned houses and the Beatrix Potter School just down the road, it is no wonder that The Magdalen Estate remains in high demand. RYAN VELLA, DIRECTOR OF TRUEPENNY’S, ON THE BENEFITS OF LIVING IN A BUSY AREA
If you like to be in the thick of it, the obvious choice for where to buy your property would be in a busy area. There are numerous advantages for living in a fast-paced environment. For instance, there’s the ease in which everyday amenities are available to you; when shops tend to thrive, they stay open later, and stock more of a variety of goods. Moreover, the abundance of bars, cafes and restaurants available mean that you can be entertained at any time of the day. Clapham’s skate parks, pitches and playground mean it’s easy to entertain little ones, and the annual SW4 festival caters for the older kids. Transport links also tend to be better, with Clapham having the option of both the underground, overground, rail and multiple bus services available; thus making the morning commute a lot easier to face.
