fter what feels like the longest, windiest, wettest winter and spring, it finally feels like we’re coming into summer. You see, I write this sat in a skirt with no tights on and I’m not cold. I’m also looking down at my hands as they type and they actually look slightly tanned. And my nails are stronger and a healthy shade of off-white rather than ripped and short: all after just a few hours in the sun. If you, like me, get worried about baring your pallid, sun-deprived flesh, do not fear, cheat your way into summer with one of the best self-tanners on the market, page 46, and on page 49 I’ve rounded up the hottest coral and apricot lip shades for you to paint on your pout. Alongside all of this, we’ve our usual plethora of high fashion content, including an edit of the best swimsuits and bikinis – page 37 – and the introduction of British Esquire’s senior style editor, Teo van den Broeke, as Absolutely’s new contributing men’s editor. He has the credentials to whip any man into sartorial shape with his monthly style column, page 43. We also grab a moment with Roehampton born actress Emily Blunt, who talks to us about her unexpected move into acting and her new film Sicario, on page 16. With Wimbledon just around the corner we chat to former tennis pro Tim Henman to get his lowdown on the championships – page 20. ARTS & CULTURE / Q&A book some brilliant talents. The only big improvement is that more people are aware of there being a festival in Balham and that means more people come so the atmosphere gets better each year. RVDB: You are playing on the 15th July in a Work in Progress show Ω tell me about it. MB: It’s a new show I’m writing called Why The Long Face? Which will look at how to be happy! What stands in the way of us enjoying our lives? Is it the thought there's UKIP? What can we do to make our lives more pleasurable? It's that really. With lots of jokes.

The Last Laugh

RVDB: You live in Balham, what is it about this area that you love? MB: Mostly the café Milk! I love Balham, it's got a village-y feel. It is nestled neatly between Clapham Common and Tooting Common and is full of independent shops, restaurants and cafes. Plus there's a TK Maxx in case you want to go and look at jumpers with wolves on that mysteriously didn't sell first time round...

Ahead of Balham comedy festival, Absolutely catches up with Marcus Brigstocke I n t e r v i e w r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e

ROMY VAN DEN BROEKE: When did you first realise you were funny? MARCUS BRIGSTOCKE: Probably at school. I said stuff, teachers got cross and friends laughed, but it only really felt like a breakthrough when friends got cross and the teachers laughed! RVDB: Did you always want to get into comedy? MB: No. A friend suggested it after I'd been cruelly rejected for drama school - he said “Why do you want to act? You're funny.” He called the next day to say he'd found an open gig and booked me a slot on it so I'd better write something. It was a competition and I came second. That was my first gig and from that very first one I thought this is brilliant, if I can do this for the rest of my life, I'll be happy. RVDB: It's a tough industry, what do you think has helped you succeed? MB: Well, I’m a white middle class man with a massive sense of entitlement which means I am welcomed with open arms along with all the others! I do believe though that there

aren’t any really successful comics who don’t just work really hard at it, even if ‘working’ means knowing how important it is to play. RVDB: Who is your comedic hero? MB: It’s either Peter Cook or Jim Henson. They are very different obviously but they make me laugh more than anyone else. But then there is Peter Sellers, Louis CK, Andrew Maxwell, Bill Bailey, Richard Pryor, Les Dawson, The Young Ones, Blackadder, Victoria Wood. The list is endless really. RVDB: What do you hope to achieve through your shows? MB: The total realignment of society to fit more neatly with my political opinions. Failing that, just some laughter! RVDB: You've played Balham Comedy Festival every year since it launched in 2012, how has the festival changed? MB: I don’t think it has got better as it was really strong to start with and it’s stayed that way. The line ups are amazing. They

RVDB: Where are your favourite places to hang out and eat in south west London? MB: Milk, Gazette and the Balham Arms and of course The Bedford! RVDB: I read online that you once juggled university and podium dancing, while also working on an oil rig. How did you find that? MB: Yeah, it was actually all pre university but it was a strange time in my life – that was what the last show was all about – I halved my body weight in 7 months and became a podium dancer who also worked on an oil ring – it was good and I recommend it to anyone as a gap year activity. I also taught people to rollerblade to supplement my income and I was a goth. It's been a strange life all in all. u Marcus plays the Balham Comedy Festival on the 15th July in the Round Room; balhamcomedyfestival.com

hen Roehamptonborn Hollywood actress Emily Blunt married her husband, American actor John Kraskinki – aka Jim Halpert from NBC’s The Office Ω four years ago, the ceremony was held at good friend George Clooney’s secluded villa on Lake Como. Something only a bonafide Hollywood A-Lister, like Blunt, can claim to have done. While Blunt’s life is undoubtedly all red carpets and celebrity friends, this multiple BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning actress is about as humble as they come. Blunt, unlike many of her contemporaries, found a career in acting quite by fluke. Other than sporadic brushes with the arts at school, Blunt had been determined to pursue academia and head to university. It wasn’t until Ω during a school play at Hurtwood House college Ω she was scouted by a leading agent, Kenneth Mcreddie, that Blunt even considered acting as a serious career option.

Because of the stutter I USED TO DO IMPRESSIONS all the time. I WOULD MIMIC FAMILY MEMBERS or teachers. Blunt claims that her interest in the performing arts developed because of a stammer she suffered from until the age of 14. “Because of the stutter I used to do impressions all the time,” she laughs, “I would mimic family members or teachers. I found that whenever I did a silly voice, I could speak more fluently. I had a teacher who saw that and encouraged me to take acting lessons, which helped even more. There was something quite liberating about being able to throw yourself into another character, not having to worry about whatever was going to come out of your mouth next.”

17 CHIS_July15_Emily Blunt.indd 17

Mcreddie had high hopes for Blunt, securing her roles both on stage and on TV, in programmes such as Foyle’s War in 2002, just one year before she starred opposite imitable actress Dame Judi Dench in Sir Peter Hall’s production of The Royal Family. But her big break came in 2004, when she starred as Tamsin, an educated 16year old cynic, in the critically acclaimed film My Summer of Love, for which she shared Ω with her co-star Natalie Press Ω an Evening Standard British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. With a plethora of impressive roles under her belt, the one she is best known for is ruthless fashion assistant Emily Charlton in the 2006 box office smash, The Devil Wears Prada. Starring alongside veteran actress Meryl Streep and fellow newcomer Anne Hathaway, the film propelled Blunt into the spotlight. Since then, she has tended to play strong, fiery women, appearing in hit films such as The Young Victoria in 2009; The Adjustment Bureau in 2011; Looper in 2012; Edge of Tomorrow in 2014; while her forthcoming film Sicario (Mexican

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW slang for ‘hitman’) is due for release this September. In Sicario Ω directed by Denis Villeneuve Ω Blunt plays hard-nosed FBI agent Kate Macer, who has been transferred from the hostage rescue division to the covert CIA para-military unit, which is waging war against the Mexican drug cartels. Josh Brolin co-stars as Matt Graver, her FBI boss determined to unleash hell on the Juarez cartel leaders, while Benicio Del Toro plays a ruthless agent-cum-torturer-cumassassin. In the face of such roles, Blunt remains determined not to define her characters as one-dimensional beings: “I don’t really see them as tough,” she explains. “Someone tells me the character is tough and I think, what because I have a gun? Instead I found my character quite damaged and vulnerable: she is struggling with being a female cop in what is essentially a man’s world. There are morally questionable things that she is experiencing with these men. It’s not a safe environment. And you see this girl going through pretty much the worst three days of her life and trying to hold face through it. After doing one scene I couldn’t sleep for three or four days afterwards. It was a tough story to tell.” Although the 32-year-old has played trying roles in the past, she reveals that this isn’t necessarily a reflection of her personality. “I’m quite a positive and energetic person, but I’m also overly sensitive,” she admits. “I’m the kind of person who will start sobbing at all the prescribed sad or romantic moments in films. Even when I watch the news or an athletic competition I can get very emotional in the moment. I also worry too much, about all sorts of nonsense, but I won’t tell you about that!” A familiar face at film festivals around the world, Blunt particularly relishes her time at Cannes. However, this year, along with many fellow actors, she found herself irritated by the festival. Rather than the focus being on the cinematographic creations or the talent of the many great actors gracing the red carpet during the festival’s fortnight, the media spotlight was instead drawn to unassociated events to do with the festival’s out-ofdate attitude towards dress, which saw a group of women denied entry because they were wearing flat shoes. Blunt, like many others, was critical of the festival’s approach to such a minor detail and decided to air her thoughts on the matter during a press conference, referring to the debacle as ‘disappointing’ and said

who I am.

that “Just when you kind of think there are these new waves of equality…” while raising her eyebrow. Despite growing up in London, the starlet moved stateside to make a real go of her career. Now a fully-fledged Los Angeles resident, Blunt is well versed in the pressures of living in such an image conscious city, alongside media pressures to consistently look good. She explains that one of the most tiring parts of the industry is that “as an actress you’re always expected to look perfect, wear the latest designs and always look your best. Sometimes you just want to wear a T-shirt and jeans when you go to the grocery store or to a café, without being pulled apart in a magazine the next day. “Because even though it [celebrity life] can creep up on you sometimes, I do also find it quite easy to disengage from it. The job is what I do, it’s not who I am. It never has been and so I feel like I do have a jewelled existence in some way. I’ve always managed to see acting as a very magical job that I’m very lucky to do.

19 CHIS_July15_Emily Blunt.indd 19

When it comes to some of the bullshit you get, you just have to develop a thick skin so that it bounces off you.” Blunt gave birth to her first child, Hazel, at the beginning of the year and is embracing motherhood with open arms. A new set of priorities and responsibilities are in place for Blunt and her husband: “If I were to choose a perfect day now, for example, it’d probably be something very quiet,” she says. “Like having a barbecue with my little one, my husband and a few good friends. And a margarita. I do love a good margarita.” What would Miranda Priestly say? u

TIGER TIM Wimbledon royalty Tim Henman talks to Absolutely about the tennis event of the year Wo r d s p i p pa b r o w n

I

s there a better British event than Wimbledon to mark the beginning of summer? Probably not. So to celebrate the coming of the tennis championships, Absolutely sit down with former tennis star Tim Henman to talk the game. Wimbledon – one of the most renowned sporting tournaments in the world – seems to come around faster every year, and retired tennis champion Tim Henman knows that feeling better than anyone, despite hanging up his tennis whites in 2007. For players, the months of dedicated training and the mental and physical endurance is a lot to bear, and that's without taking into account the pressures of playing against the world’s greatest players. “Wimbledon is always going to be the highlight for me, it was my favourite tournament to play,” remarks Tim Henman, “I experienced some of the best moments of my life on those courts.” Eager to stay relevant and involved in Wimbledon tournament, Henman takes a continued interest behind the

scenes. “I’m on the board at Wimbledon,” he explains, a role which requires him to mediate between event organisers and the needs of tennis players. “I think it’s the tournament the players most want to win,” Henman says. Certainly this is true of Henman himself, who recalls watching Björn Borg play when he was just six years old and deciding there and then what he wanted to be when he grew up. Luckily, Tim Henman’s family was full of keen sportsmen and women, so his dream was supported fully from day one. Henman’s great-grandmother, Ellen Stawell-Brown, was the first woman to serve overarm at Wimbledon, while his grandfather and grandmother also competed. Reaping the benefits of both nature and nurture, Henman’s mother Jane played in the junior tournament. His family’s love for the game saw a very young Tim practice hard on the family’s home court in Oxford. With enough perserverance and plenty of talent, Henman improved his serve and technique exponentially, and Ω at aged eight Ω reached his first national final. Following on from such an

accomplishment, Henman trained with the David Lloyd’s Slater Squad from the age of 11 before turning fully professional at 18. As he progressed up the tennis ranks, Henman fought his way into the world top 30, and became the home crowds number one after making it to Wimbledon’s quarter finals. The late 90s saw the sportsman reach world number four, compete in four Wimbledon semifinals and win an impressive 11 ATP titles. Henman has described himself as “probably a bit obsessive” when it comes to training, but this disciplinary attitude to his career led to incredible highs, one of which was beating Roger Federer in 2001. But while Tim was world number four, luck never threw him the Wimbledon title as the closest he got the same year he beat Federer - was two points away from reaching the final. “The match was played over three days on Centre Court because of rain – something that wouldn’t happen today because of the roof,” he recollects. “I lost to Goran Ivanisevic after just 20 minutes on the third day. Usually play lasts much longer and the suddenness left me numb for days.” Henman retired as a professional player in 2007, and while the 40-yearold is now busy being a father to three children, he still likes to lend his voice to the event: “I do two weeks at Wimbledon for the BBC,” he says. “It’s sort of home from home!” So who does Henman think we should excited by this tournament? “Well there are many stories, certainly in the men’s game,” he offers, picking Swiss player Stan Wawrinka as an example. “For someone like Wawrinka to win the Australian Open (in 2013) was an incredible achievement but I think it was also a bit of a breakthrough for all the other players because the top four have always been so dominant. It just shows it [winning] can be done.” He comments that while Federer has a reputation for winning majors, this isn’t definitive as “he’s not getting any younger, it [winning] is not going to get any easier.” Henman won’t be joining the big names for

commentary on the Grand Slam circuit this year. “I don’t really see myself at this stage doing more than [Wimbledon] because if you do more then there’s a lot more travel involved. I’ve got a young family and I like being at home,” he explains. That said, as a keen supporter of grass-roots tennis talent, he’s willing to travel to encourage youngsters into the sport and has been involved in The Road to Wimbledon in the UK for the past 13 years. “It’s a program where we have about 20,000 kids who play in their schools locally and the best ones play regionally, then the top 64 boys and the top 64 girls play the finals at Wimbledon.” Last year they took the concept overseas, and Henman headed East. “India has a big heritage of tennis

21 B&C_July15_Tim_Henman.indd 21

and a real love for Wimbledon so we had one tournament in Delhi, and then the other in Dubai.” The Junior Grass Tournament returned this year, where after the Master’s event in April, “the top 2 boys and top 2 girls come and play our event, the National Finals, in Wimbledon in August.” The Road to Wimbledon is a road tread by many feet; local residents, elite and amateur athletes and fans who travel from far and wide to witness the great sporting event. While much of London will be showing the tennis, Henman believes there’s no better place than on the top of Henman Hill, the athlete’s namesake landmark, with a glass of Pimms and some strawberries and cream. u

ummer is upon us, and its body-baring demands mean only S one thing: it’s time to consult the experts. There is one irrefutable leader when it comes to the creation of covetable swimwear, and that’s the Australians. With more warm weather than you can shake a stick at, it’s no wonder the Aussies have got beachwear glam sussed. Our brand á la moment is luxury label JETS from designer Jessika Allen. JETS’ latest range Ω the Preview ’15 collection Ω boasts a premium line of swimwear and resortwear (from £64) made from nylon microfibre Lycra® which is then crafted using precision-cut tailoring. Given the label’s signature is strong silhouettes, line play is a recurrent theme, as colour blocking, bold graphic prints and flashes of neon work to enhance the female form. The lined mesh panel range, Parallel, comes in flattering hues of saturated tomato and cobalt. Allen also taps into the sports luxe trend and offers crop top cut bikinis, proving that shortsleeved one-pieces and sun shirts can be sexy. (Though, models Hannah Saul and Melinda Kemp do a good job at convincing us.) All in all, it's best to do as the Preview ’15 collection suggests and, “Listen to your intuition.” So head to Selfridges online and treat yourself to JETS pieces now. u

Prints Charming Zimmermann

enswear is a slow moving animal. Unlike womenswear, where a trend will be shown on the runway and instantly adopted into the style vernacular, we men take a good six seasons to buy into the fashions shown on the runways of London, Paris, Milan and beyond. Take sandals, for instance; they’ve been shown by everyone from Giorgio Armani to Lanvin for the past four seasons and only just are they being translated onto the high street. And even now Ω two years down the line Ω we’re still not quite convinced. Sometimes a brand, trend or garment comes along which we can buy into immediately. For a long time British designer Jonathan ‘JW’ Anderson was

best known for his overtly feminine menswear (think thighconstricting crepe bell bottoms and floaty silk pussybow blouses), but his work as creative director of Spanish leather goods brand Loewe has taken that off-kilter aesthetic to accessible, covetable new heights. Unsurprisingly, the range of leather goods Anderson has produced for the label is where the new direction’s strength truly lies. From remarkably tactile calfskin luggage in elegant shades of mustard, caramel and midnight blue, to chunky suede espadrilles which perfectly capture the Spanish essence of the brand, everything feels modern, luxurious and masculine (the ready-to-wear included, remarkably).u all products available from loewe.com

cclesia Hair is nestled amongst a pretty set of houses on the Wandsworth Bridge Road. You can feel the breeze of the Thames on your cheeks before you enter the secluded salon, which provides everything you would want from an afternoon of pampering. I was there because of my hair Ω it was looking a little under the weather. Months of neglect had left it brittle and lacklustre, so I decided it was time I turned things around. As I wasn't really feeling bold enough to go for any colour Ω I like what the sun has recently done to it Ω the stylist

Months of neglect had left my hair BRITTLE and LACKLUSTRE

suggested that I instead opt for a nourishing Moroccan oil treatment, a trim, and some sculpting. The stylist got to work primping and preening my locks, chopping off split ends. The oil was left in my hair for ten minutes to make sure it really saturated into the follicles and inject a little life back to it. Then it was washed, dried and styled. The hairdresser’s nimble hands worked their magic and I left Ecclesia looking neat and tidy, while my hair felt glossy and looked the healthiest it has in months. Thank you Ecclesia. ◆

often sport smokey eyes in summer. My skin is usually at its best during the months without an 'r', and having a light tan tends to disguise dark circles, creating perfect conditions for a soft rockchick look. Most women tend to overthink a smokey eye - but it's the easiest thing in the world once you care a little less. Remember they are meant to be a bit undone. The basic idea is to get as much colour as possible into the roots of your lashes. Using a soft yet longwearing pencil like this Chantecaille gel liner, smudge the colour into the base of your lashline using your finger, then repeat. You can then build colour using

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_JULY15_Makeup_Insider.indd 50

a cream shadow with a little shimmer like these Charlotte Tilbury pots. Depending on how dramatic a look you're going for, I might go back in with a liquid liner to build the intensity at the lashes and shape the eye. If you prefer powder shadows then this Hourglass palette will be your best friend - use the darker shade at the base of the lashes, then build up into the shimmering gold on the eyelid. A good volumising mascara is key, and really spend time wiggling the brush right into the roots of your lashes before combing up and out. Finish by patting a soft gold luminiser such as this beautiful Burberry one into your cheekbones. ◆

Beetroot falafel

ack in season and full of flavour, a great way to make the most of the new beetroot crop is to boost the flavour of falafel. Although beetroot can taste sweet it has also an earthiness to it, which is why the Pinot Noir grape makes a great match. It might seem surprising, but the reputation of Bulgarian Pinot Noir is on the rise and it’s thanks to wines like this one. Its lovely strawberry juiciness and delicate earthy character works perfectly with the cumin and beetroot in the falafel. Soli Pinot Noir 2011, £9.99; thewinesociety.com ◆ B

Sea trout with samphire and lemon

amphire has become the darling ingredient to serve with fish in recent years, tasting like a cross between seaweed and asparagus. Eton mess

ith strawberries and raspberries back on the seasonal menu, Eton Mess is one of the best ways to enjoy their start-of-season sweetness. The richness of cream, the sweetness of meringue and the fruit-popping freshness of berries can only mean one wine and that’s a Moscato d’Asti, which is a cheeky, lightly fizzy, delicately sweet wine from Piedmont. Its grapey sweetness and freshness make it the perfect way to end a meal. Volpi Moscato d’Asti 2012, Bottle Apostle, £9; bottleapostle.com ◆ W

love Viognier. The wines created from this grape variety are often full-bodied but manage to have a softness, which probably comes from the natural aromatics the grape reveals, such as peach and violets. This particular wine, from the Santa Maria Valley in California, is bursting with ripe tangerine and notes of orange blossom. A great wine to drink without food, but if you pair it with lobster bisque, charcuterie or asparagus it will really sing. Cambria Tepusquet Viognier 2012, £22; newstreetwineshop.co.uk I

FOOD & DRINK / RESTAURANT REVIEW THE PASTA is homemade AND SERVED in a silky, al dente PILE ON THE PLATE with a generous AMOUNT OF LOBSTER

The Italian Job Absolutely tastes authentic Italian fare at Capri in Wimbledon

Mullet with saffron cauliflower, baby leek and aubergine puree, while I ordered the linguine all’astice. My companion enjoyed his dish claiming that each element complemented the other well and, although slightly overcooked, the fish was still flavoursome. The linguine all’astice is one of the signature dishes at Capri. The pasta is homemade and served in a silky, al dente pile on the plate. The amount of lobster was generous, thankfully, and the zingy tomato sauce was heavy enough to amply coat each strand of linguine – personal preference would’ve demanded a touch of chilli, but that’s just me. Despite eating a monumental amount of food we felt ok, which can only put down to the freshness of each dish (or the size of our bellies). Knowing that we are on the verge of eating ourselves into an uncomfortable stupor, we decided to share just one dessert; the semifreddo al torroncino. Essentially a nougat parfait – with a side of fresh berries and a drizzle of chocolate sauce – it was, quite simply, amazing and the highlight of the meal. There’s nothing better than a good independently run restaurant, and that’s exactly what Capri is. Ben fatto Jacob and Mirella, and grazie. u

T

he owners of Capri in Wimbledon Village, Jacob and Mirella, opened a couple of years ago and have since become the local spot for Italian fare. Inspired by the cuisine of Capri – a little island in Italy’s Gulf of Naples - the restaurant aims to keep things as authentic as possible using ingredients such as fresh fish, tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and plenty of olive oil. We began our meal with a bread bowl, which was piled high with fluffy, freshly baked Italian breads – focaccias,

ciambellas, pane di Materas and ciabattas – all doused in olive oil, sea salt and pressed with extras such as olives and sundried tomatoes. Shamelessly polishing off the lot, we then tucked into some of the antipasti. The Polpo alla Gringlia – grilled octopus served with pea puree and deep fried lemon polenta – was fresh, but the portion of polpo could’ve been a little bigger, while the fine selection of Italian cured meats and pickles was simple but tasty. Off to a good start, which was only enhanced by the bottomless glass of prosecco. Next were the mains; my dining companion opted for the pan fried Red

MUTTON IN CORIANDER his is a dish that my Ossetian friend gave to me a while back. It’s slightly modernized, as they would never use soy sauce or ginger in Ossetian food, but both definitely enhance it. Adding fresh garlic at the end is a typical ploy in the Caucasus region. I know it seems crazy to cook fresh herbs for such a long time, but it works, and when you add the fresh herb leaves at the end, it all sings. T

Serves 4 Ingredients

• 80g (3oz) coriander, roots, stalks and leaves • 80g (3oz) parsley, stalks and leaves • 25g (1oz) dill, stalks and leaves • 25g (1oz) fresh root ginger, peeled • 1 fresh bay leaf • 2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 1 tablespoon clear honey • 1 teaspoon piri piri sauce • 750g (1½ lb) mutton or lamb ribs, cut into individual ribs • 1 large onion, thinly sliced • 2 carrots, peeled and grated • 2 beef tomatoes (skin discarded), grated • 1 green pepper, cored, deseeded and chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper Method

01 Wash the herbs, especially the coriander stalks and roots. Blitz the stalks (reserve the leaves) with the ginger, bay leaf, pomegranate molasses, soy sauce, honey and piri piri in a food processor until you have a paste consistency. 02 Rub the herb mixture over the ribs and an onion, place in a bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave in the refrigerator to marinate for a couple of hours or preferably overnight. 03 The next day, place the ribs and the excess marinade in a large saucepan, add the grated carrots and tomato pulp, season with salt and pepper, then cook over a low heat for a couple of hours or until the meat is very tender and falls away from the bone. 04 When it is almost ready, chop the green pepper, garlic and the herb leaves and add to the dish. Cook for a further 5 minutes and then serve. u

WASP NEST BUNS ’ve always loved the name of these, and there has always been something dangerously attractive about the whole wasp element of this dish. Also, these buns look very much like the stuff we’d see in foreign films. Were there Swedish cinnamon rolls in Ingmar Bergman films? Maybe not. Were they in the incredibly popular Astred Lindgren Karlsson-on-the-Roof cartoon adaptations? The Moomins?! Either way, they look exotic and feed my fantasies of living somewhere abroad. I

APRICOT & SOUR CHERRY PIE

Makes 15–20 Ingredients

• 50g (2oz) butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 2 tablespoons caster sugar • pinch of fine sea salt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 15g (½oz) fresh yeast • 2 egg yolks • 250ml (8fl oz) warm milk • 500g (1lb) plain flour, plus extra for dusting • 100g (3½oz) granulated sugar • 50g (2oz) pecan nuts, Crushed Method 01 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4, and butter a 24cm (9½ inch) round cake tin. 02 Work the caster sugar, salt and vanilla extract into the yeast with a fork in a bowl, helping the yeast to dissolve. Add the egg yolks and work these in to form a paste. 03 Add the milk, sift in the flour and mix it into a soft dough. 04 Generously flour the work surface and knead the dough briefly. Make sure the surface is well floured and then roll the dough out as thinly as you can. 05 Brush the dough with the softened butter (I just use my hand), then evenly sprinkle over the granulated sugar, followed by the crushed nuts. 06 Roll up the sheet to create a long sausage, then cut it across into 15–20 pieces. Don’t worry if you have some baby ones, they’ll add to the charm. 07 Arrange them pretty side up in a haphazard manner in the greased cake tin. Bake for about 30–40 minutes, making sure you don’t open the oven door prematurely. The buns should be plump and golden and dangerously inviting. u

ow that I live in the UK, I find it near impossible to buy fresh or frozen sour cherries. I hear that you can go to pick-your-own farms in the summer, so if they don’t hit my local farmers’ market next year, I will make sure to go and pick loads, as nothing beats them. We grow and use them extensively in the Ukraine, as they just drop off trees in the streets in June. If you have the same trouble with sourcing the sour sort, try macerating regular cherries in some pomegranate molasses or lemon juice to add a sour note. The pastry is not like a tart Ω be prepared for some pillowy, brioche breadiness instead.

N

Serves 8 Ingredients

• 200g (7oz) fresh sour cherries or regular • 3 tablespoons pomegranate molasses or lemon juice, if using regular cherries • butter, for greasing • 500g (1lb) apricots, halved, stoned • 200g (7oz) granulated sugar • 1 recipe quantity of Floater Dough • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 100g (3½ oz) ground Almonds Method 01 Halve the cherries and remove the stones. If using regular cherries, macerate them in the pomegranate molasses or lemon juice for a couple of hours. 02 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas

63 B&C_JULY15_Recipes.indd 63

Mark 4, and lightly butter a 24cm (9 ½ inch) round cake tin or pie dish. 03 Drain the the cherries and mix with the apricot halves and sugar. 04 Pinch one-fifth of the Floater Dough off and set aside. 05 Roll the rest out into a circle 10cm (4 inches) larger than the diameter of your cake tin or dish. 06 Place the circle inside the greased tin or dish, making sure that the dough goes up the sides as well. 07 Cut the reserved dough into long strips for making a lattice for the top of the pie. 08 Brush the base of the pastry case with some of the beaten egg and sprinkle with ground almonds – this should prevent the pie going soggy when it cools. 09 Add the fruit filling and arrange the lattice bits over the top. 10 Brush the lattice with the remaining beaten egg and bake for 55 minutes or until it turns deep dark golden. u

FOODIE FUN London’s biggest feast comes to Clapham Common this summer

T

he UK’s largest celebration of food and drink, Foodies Festival, returns to Clapham Common this month, (2426th July), for its third consecutive year. The biggest (and, we argue, the best) of all the Foodies Festivals, this one sees Clapham Common transformed into a culinary destination for food fanatics, amateur chefs and those seeking the ultimate foodie Instagram picture. This festival will have you shucking oysters one minute and cooking with Michelin-star chefs the very next. Choose

to get busy learning the tricks of the culinary trade or simply relax by enjoying some of the city’s best street food. One thing you really must make the most of is the Aga Rangemaster Chefs’ Theatre where London’s finest culinary talents and celebrity chefs will be teaching you how to cook up a storm this summer. So take your seat and watch on as they cook their avourite recipes for you to recreate at home. Among the chefs this year is Adam Handling from Caxton, Ben Tish from Saltyard and Owen Sullivan from Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill. MasterChef winner Ping Coombes and TV chef Aldo Zilli

will also be inspiring you to be more adventurous in the kitchen with some of their most signature dishes. If all that learning makes you thirsty, do not fear, get sipping on this season’s best champagnes and wines in the Drinks Theatre with experts Charles Metcalfe and Neil Phillips who will be guiding you through some of the world’s best bubblies. Or take a craft beer and food pairing masterclass with acclaimed beer connoisseur and writer Melissa Cole. If that’s not crazy enough for you, live life like a rock star with a Chocolate Snorting masterclass from Coeur de Xocolat – you’ll be left tasting chocolate for hours. Korean, Mexican, Argentinian, Thai and Japanese are just a few of the cuisines served on the Street Food Avenue, taking you on a flavour adventure around the world - and with over 200 artisan producers to shop from in the Producer’s Market - you’ll be spoilt for choice with samples and what to buy to take home and enjoy. After getting your fill of feasting fun, why not toast to the perfect summer’s day with an ice cold mojito from the Captain Morgan Ship or cocktail from the Giant Pimm’s Teapot? Choose your prefered tipple and sit back, relax and soak in the atmosphere with live music on the Entertainment Stage. u

ROME

 SPOTLIGHT ON

Real Roman food and culture hy is it that when in Rome we immediately head to the Trevi and the Colosseum? That’s not what the Romans do. This city is not only steeped in ancient history but culinary culture too. Make a point of seeing both sides and it’s impossible to leave disappointed. W

S E E . For art, the Galleria Borghese is a brilliant alternative to the crowded Vatican Museum. Limiting the number of visitors allowed inside, you are given just two hours to explore. Stay on the move and you’ll see works by Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini. If architectural spectacle is what you’re after, venture 45 minutes out of Rome to the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli. Built during the 2nd century, this archaeological site was once a hub of power and includes the remains of the famous Maritime Theatre.

This CITY is not only steeped in

ANCIENT HISTORY but CULINARY CULTURE too S TAY. Just 15 minutes from the city, the Rome Cavalieri is the perfect base for exploration. Offering the tranquility of a resort, hotel highlights include the La Prairie Grand Spa, outdoor pools and a record-breaking multi-million pound art collection. While the entire hotel is on the swanky side, you can’t beat the luxury found in the hotel’s 25 suites. In the penthouse you’ll find original Warhol prints, a rare marble and malachite hydro-massage bathroom with Swarovski crystal fixtures, and a private roof terrace where the twinkling panoramic view includes the Vatican. Relentlessly passionate about food, the Cavalieri is also home to the only 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Rome, La Pergola. Run by Heinz Beck, the food here is something else. His famous fagottelli is an unconventional pasta dish that sees creamy carbonara sauce encased within the parcels rather than poured on top. G O . Every restaurant in Rome claims to serve the best Italian food so do your research before heading out. We found real Roman fare at the authentic neighbourhood trattoria, Osteria dell’Angelo. Full of Italians drinking local wine and eating homemade pasta it’s worth booking a table in advance. For Roman cuisine without the foreplaning, we recommend a food safari with Eating Italy (eatingitalyfoodtours. com). Taking you through the foodie neighbourhood of Testaccio, this guided tour lets you escape the crowds and experience the city like a local – on foot. One thing you must try en route is the suppì from Trapizzino: these deep fried balls of saucy risotto contain an oozing chunk of mozzarella. Devilishly good. u Elizabeth Hutton

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP VIENNA  SPOTLIGHT ON

Retail therapy and decadent balls ienna can now add shopping destination to its already impressive offering of baroque and gothic architecture, outrageous charity balls and famous hotels, making it the ideal city break this summer. V

S E E . Vienna is a historically and culturally rich city and, with the exception of the Belvedere Gallery (permanent home to the works of Gustav Klimt) and the Central Cemetery (even more permanent home to Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert), most of this history can be found in the First District. Enlist a tour guide to take you on a walking tour and you will notice the wide streets, completely devoid of litter and the air, free from smog, courtesy of a healthy breeze blowing off the Danube. They will undoubtedly lead you past the impressive, crescent-shaped Hofburg Imperial Palace, former home of the Habsburgs and stop off at the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an epic Gothic edifice with a stunning tiled roof that bears the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna. If walking seems like too much effort, hail a fiaker (the Viennese horse and carts that throng the First District) for a leisurely excursion around the city centre. If shopping is the main priority, the newly built Golden Quarter, located off Am Hof Square is a must-visit. Signa Group’s latest project manages to pay tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage Site it inhabits with tasteful and uniform signage and top-end brands, from Valentino to Vivienne Westwood, not to mention remarkable luxury apartments and office spaces with breathtaking views.

S TAY. The Park Hyatt Vienna is hard to beat in the hotel stakes. Located in the picturesque Am Hof Square, the Park Hyatt opened in June 2014 and has quickly established itself as one of the city’s places to be seen. What with 143 luxurious rooms (including 35 suites), the fully kitted out Arany Spa housing the largest indoor swimming pool in Vienna and The Bank, the hotel’s exceptional restaurant, even walking out of the front door is a wrench. The decor is in tune with the historic roots of the building, formerly a bank, with seams of mother of pearl running through it and luxurious natural materials such as onyx from Iran and marble from Italy dominating the rooms and common areas. Those looking to enjoy a drink of an evening can keep it traditional in the hotel’s Lounge where cigar smoking and whisky drinking is par for the course or head down to Pearl, the more contemporary bar that spills out onto the street. G O . Vienna is known for the lavish balls that make up its social season and although the Life Ball does not fit into the traditional category (you won’t need to learn to waltz to have a good time) it has become a fixture in the city since the first event was organised by Gary Kessler with the help of some famous friends in 1993. It is now the largest charity ball in Europe and raises hundreds of thousands

69 NH_June15_Euro_Getaway.indd 69

If shopping is A PRIORITY the newly built GOLDEN QUARTER is a mustvisit of pounds to fight HIV and AIDS every year. The theme for 2015 was ‘Gold’ and in standard flamboyant fashion, the red carpet was awash with gold-bedecked revellers, some wearing little more than body paint and others kitted out in golden bondage gear and chains. The Opening Ceremony featured fire and tributes being brought up to the stage, which were received by dancers dressed as Klimt paintings. Bizarre and wonderful celebrity appearances included Charlize Theron, Sean Penn and Dita von Teese with musical performances from Mary J Blige, Sophie Ellis Bextor and, of course, Conchita Wurst. A wonderful, surreal, outlandish and fabulous event, the Life Ball shows Vienna at its best.u Catherine Hales

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP Since luxury is the ESSENCE OF THIS TRIP splash out on an exclusive private BOAT TRIP in a city where space is at a premium. Don’t miss the afternoon tea, which offers a Nordic twist on the British tradition (smoked eel puffs; foie gras and beetroot), and take note of the staff’s beautiful uniforms, designed by Franc Fernandez, of Lady Gaga’s meat dress fame.

AMSTERDAM  SPOTLIGHT ON

Dutch luxe

msterdam is an obvious choice for a short city break. It’s quicker to get to than Edinburgh, smaller and more manageable than Paris and absolutely everyone speaks English. A

S E E . The fantastic Rijksmuseum reopened in 2013 after a 10-year closure and the new arrangement is truly magnificent, adding a stylish modern below-ground level atrium and liberating lots of previously paintedover frescoes. Curators have rearranged works according to century, instead of separating paintings from ceramics and so on. The audioguides offer a good selection of tours including a highlights one that takes in all the predictable essentials (Rembrand’s Nightwatch, Vermeer’s Milkmaid) as well as the wonderful dolls house room, unmissable for anyone who has read The Miniaturist. There’s also a lovely 20th century gallery right at the top of the building, as well as a brilliant souvenir shop.

S TAY. Amsterdam hasn’t traditionally been known for its lavishness; more for its informality, tolerance and laid-back charm. So with last year’s opening of a new Waldorf Astoria hotel on the Herengracht, the potential for luxury has stepped up a notch, and the city’s most luxe rooms (and its most expensive) can now be found in a fabulous canalside location within easy walking distance of the Rembrandplein, the Hermitage and everywhere really. There are lots of striking things about the hotel, which is made up of six 17th century townhouses knocked together to create a sprawling, 93-room residence that boasts not only the city’s biggest private garden but also an insanely luxurious Guerlain spa, an exclusive two-Michelin star restaurant and a separate all-day brasserie (named Goldfinch, nodding to both Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel’s Amsterdam setting and the hotel’s arty connections) and a fabulous underground cocktail bar (the building is a former bank and this is the vault; you can still see the old safe boxes, some of them mysteriously locked). Ask for a room with a canal view and appreciate the spacious dimensions

71 NH_June15_Euro_Getaway.indd 71

G O . For a feel of contemporary Amsterdam, try Hotel Droog, (Staalstraat 7B, hoteldroog.com) a conceptual multi-identity space that’s part gallery, part restaurant, part hotel as well as a performance space, yoga studio and design shop. Eat at the Plantaage, (Plantage Kerklan 36, caferestaurantdeplantage.nl) a spacious and stylish eaterie near the zoo (watch the flamingos from the terrace). And since luxury is the essence of this trip, splash out on an exclusive private boat trip with Classic Boat Dinners (classicboatdinners.nl) whose flamboyant captain Nico Bax will entertain you with endless stories as you cruise the canals, stopping off at the city’s top restaurants to pick up different courses at each, before dropping you back at the Waldorf Astoria to be met by the cashmere capeclad doormen.u Pendle Harte

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP ATHENS  SPOTLIGHT ON

Street art in Athens on’t always believe what you read in the papers. Greece might be in the depth of a financial crisis, but the atmosphere in the capital is a million miles away from austerity. D

S E E . The street art. While it’s possible to wander the streets and stumble across it, a tour is the best way to spot the urban masterpieces. Alternative Athens will organize a street artist to give you an inside look at the very best the streets have to offer. Our guide, Achilles, points out his own enigmatic painted faces as we walk around Psiri, the vibrant, graffitiladen equivalent of London’s Shoreditch. Each of the paintings tells a story: a series of ‘sad princesses’ tells of an artist trying to win back his lover, a crowned dog against a backdrop of flames is the hero of the 2008 riots. Together, they help

Street art helps PAINT A PICTURE of modern-day Athens as the colourful CITY IT HAS BECOME

paint a picture of modern-day Athens as the colourful, creative city it has become. But alongside the contemporary, there’s the classical for which Athens is famous. No visit Greece’s capital would be complete without seeing the ancient Acropolis, one of the seven wonders of the world. Book a guide through Discover Greece as it’s easy to feel like you’re just looking at a pile of rubble without a bit of context. Even if you’re not interested in ancient ruins, the view from the top of the hill is worth the climb. From here you can look down through the Cyprus trees to the new Acropolis Museum.

the luxurious loft suites, each a haven of marble and elegant artworks complete with a king-sized bed, outdoor terrace and views across the city. Meanwhile, the ridiculously popular graffiti rooms are decorated by the cream of Greece’s street art talent, including acclaimed artist B. Expect everything from flaming volcanoes and giant squids to enchanted forests and comic book heroes on the walls. Great for the kids, they’re also available as family rooms. G O . Athens has plenty of hip hangouts, provided you know where to find them. Most tend to be concealed down back

S TAY. Who said street art has to end on the streets? Stay at the Grecotel Pallas Athena and you can sleep surrounded by it. Located in the heart of downtown Athens, the design-led boutique hotel is like staying in your own private art gallery – each of the 63 rooms is adorned with original pieces and quirky graffiti art. For designer elegance, choose one of

streets, up stairs or behind closed doors making them so tricky to find that many Athenians don’t even know about them. One great example of this is Six Dogs on Avramiotou St. Hidden down a back alley, Six Dogs is an arty concept venue where you can find live music, exhibitions and an enchanted courtyard. A similar idea but with more historic charm is The Art Foundation, aka Taf on Normanou St. Behind the wrought iron doors and through a dark, stone-clad corridor is a former communal house dating back to 1871 that once homed 12 families. Around the courtyard bar, the rickety wooden rooms are filled with art being exhibited – perfect for perusing with a drink in hand. Meanwhile, at the back of a small shopping arcade next door is Couleur Locale, a relaxed roof terrace bar where you can watch the sun set over the Acropolis at the end of the day and raise a toast to a city transformed. u

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY WHAT IS IT?

C

heltenham just got cool. This handsome grade II listed Georgian villa is the latest in a portfolio of ‘restaurantswith-rooms’ owned by hot young hoteliers Sam and Georgina Pearman, of The Wheatsheaf fame. Positioned on the promenade, the hotel’s elegantly restored frontage has all the grandiosity you’d come to expect from a Regency spa town on the edge of the Cotswolds. But - never judge a hotel by its façade. Step inside No 131 and you’ll see that the considered interior is far more Brooklyn brownstone than Georgian townhouse – and we’re not talking Shoreditchified New Yorkstyle here either. With works by Brit artists David Hockney and Peter Blake lining the walls, turquoise upholstery and hordes of reclaimed antiques - the overall impression is homely yet refined. But it’s the neon sign above the fireplace proclaiming the words ‘SIN WILL FIND YOU OUT’ that really sets the tone for your stay. And you will sin. Hard. u

vidently an advocate for booze and gluttony, No 131’s crowning glory is Crazy Eights - the hotel's restaurant and cocktail bar and a hot new addition to the Cheltenham night scene, so I’m told. Don’t let the name put you off, the locally sourced and steak-heavy menu is hearty and unpretentious, the wine list extensive and the metropolitan cocktail offering tailored to the palette of a seasoned [heavy] drinker. We opted for the seafood platter of oysters mignonette, welks, prawns and mussels followed by decadent Côte de boeuf with a side of duck fat fries and roasted cauliflower with alioli. Mega. The prices are high, but the food is delicious and cooked to perfection. The treacle tart with salted caramel ice cream sealed the deal, and after a few more Mint Juleps we flopped off to bed. u

T

he Brooklyn-comes-toCheltenham vibe continues in the rooms with a moody palette of tactile grey-blues, fresh Egyptian cotton and reclaimed wooden floorboards. One look at the bathroom with its floor-to-ceiling subway tiles, his and hers monsoon head wet room and Lefroy Brooks fittings and you may need to take a cold shower. From the hot chocolate and cookies turn down service to the cheese and charcuterie cellar, No 131 is a place to explore all your gastronomic fantasies. Best for a boozy break with your partner, take advantage of the mix your own Bloody Mary bar and bell jar of pharmaceuticals on offer in the morning – you’ll need them. u

With the Doona, there’s no need to transfer your little one from car seat to buggy; the seat changes into a stroller in less than ten seconds and at the touch of a button. It’s not a complete travel system, in the sense that you may need another buggy for all-day use (possibly one with all-terrain wheels, or a newborn-friendly carrycot), but if you’re buying a car-seat anyway, why not get one with its own set of integral wheels? The Doona comes with an orthopaedic, hypo-allergenic inner cushion for younger babies and other key benefits, including chassis suspension and a rocking function. ◆ £299; cuddleco.co.uk

Do I need to employ an agent or consultant? rivate education is increasingly becoming a P luxury and an investment. Ensuring that you are receiving value for money and a sufficient return is not only prudent but will alleviate any anxieties you may have about your child’s progress. With their in-depth knowledge of independent schools, educational consultants identify what academic structure and environment will best support your offspring and encourage them to thrive. Bonas MacFarlane leads the way on this and is unique in providing a mentoring programme following the placement. This closely monitors your child’s progress throughout their school career, maximising all opportunities and pushing the pupil to realise their potential. A note of warning: it is wise to be aware of rogue agents. Having sprung up from business ability rather than experience and an organic interest in the British education system, agents are frequently driven by fee-taking agreements made with schools. As such, when choosing a consultant reputation should be tantamount to ensure first class results. u

arking about with horses at school might seem to be the sole preserve of smart girls at public school with hair as glossy as their pony’s manes, but horses are trotting into schools in surprising places. Equine therapy, or more specifically Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an established practice in the US that is gaining popularity here. EAL aims to enable children to achieve educational goals by interacting with horses, particularly pupils who find it hard to engage with mainstream schooling such as those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Its sister therapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses similar, often one-on-one techniques to help and heal many groups of people, such as traumatised children, sufferers of PTSD and recovering addicts. They are even using it for treatments at the Priory. Last November, as part of National Anti-Bullying Week, groups of London school pupils aged between 12-15 years old were able to work with shire horses in Hyde Park alongside EAL therapist Dr Andreas Liefooghe. “Humans can learn a lot from watching horses,” says Dr Andreas Liefooghe. The main aim of the programme was to teach teenagers co-operative group work and inclusion rather than competition and exclusion. The children learnt to interact with the animals through observing their responses and communicating non-verbally, learning valuable lessons about themselves and teamwork along the way. EAL is proving particularly valuable for children with issues such as ADHD, autism and attachment disorders. Children with SEN can learn about themselves and others, processing and discussing feelings and behaviour patterns they may struggle to articulate. Treatments can be gentle, introductory sensory techniques, such as grooming or petting a horse, or even decorating it with paint. The benefits of sensory work are profound, involving fine motor skills, verbal communication and social interaction.

89 Chiswick_JULY15_Education.indd 89

The reason EAL works so well, says Rosie Edwards, who runs the charity Learning Through Horses, is that “Horses are like mirrors – they reflect the emotions around them, whether excitement, anger, joy or sadness.” Edwards offers EAL courses for pupils in London schools; working with six pupils at a time, she teaches them the basics of horsewhispering – training horses using body language. This requires “fine-tuned” control and observation techniques, says Edwards. Most importantly, “in order to train horses, students must get control of their own emotions”. Edwards sees the difference EAL makes right in front of her eyes. “Most pupils are referred to us because of challenging behaviour but we see very little of it here,” she says. “Plus the threat of getting kicked in the head is a little more real,” she laughs. Edwards also notes that pupils renowned for non-attendance never miss a day at her stables. This motivation can itself reap rewards. Last September, Edwards ran a programme aimed at getting young people back into employment. She now receives regular requests for job references from those pupils who have made successful job applications. “That gives me massive gratification,” she says. u For more information or to make a donation visit

his cubist style building has both an interesting history and a fascinating location. It was built 11 years ago as a party house but it’s been refurbished recently with more grown up tastes in mind. The property is in the village of Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera in the geographical centre of Ibiza, well known for its hippy atmosphere and music festival. It’s also a fashionable place to hang out – Jade Jagger has been spotted nibbling on a bocadillo at one of its bars. u  Savills International, 020 7016 3740; savills.com T

ost of us have that Mediterranean property moment at some point in our lives, even if we don’t act on it. You may have already experienced it while on holiday; an evening meal on a balmy night, with the twitter of cicadas in the

background and the heady effects of some local wine. This is when the conversation probably turned to ‘let’s get a holiday home here’. At the moment these restaurant chats are multiplying as the UK economy revives, with holiday home prices rising too. So, what can you buy in the Med’s principal hotspots? u

taly’s Tuscan countryside has long been a magnet for UK tourists and house hunters, both drawn to its mouthwatering food, rolling countryside, olive groves and vineyards. While houses have been selling for sky-high prices for years, developments have sprung up to satisfy those with more modest budgets. These are often refurbished estates or palazzos. A recent example is Residence Terre Gialle, deep in the countryside half way between the city of Perugia and the coast, both of which are a two-hour car journey away. The site has a history rooted in the now defunct local mining industry and is a development of studios, one and two bedroom apartments and three-bedroom townhouses, which are available at full price or fractionally. u  Terre Gialle, 020 3637 2215; terregialle.com I

ou will know this area of Cannes if you’ve read JG Ballard’s 2000 novel Super Cannes, named after the set of sought-after communities in the hills overlooking this most English of cities, and the glittering sea beyond. The area is a favourite of the film stars who come each year to the film festival, mainly because of the area’s unimpeded views of the coast. This newly built example is a five-bedroom property and includes every gorgeous cliché that a villa should have, such as an open-plan design, huge terrace and garden, and an infinity pool. u  Savills Cannes, +33 497 06 06 90; savills.com

urcia might be one of the Spanish coastline’s lesser known areas, but it harbours one of Spain’s most famous golf resorts. La Manga is the natural place to visit if you’re a footballer or film star holidaying in the area. Such popularity comes from its location, overlooking a sand bar and within a national park, and its extraordinarily beautiful rolling golf course. Available for sale within the resort are two building plots in which 2,000 sq m modernist villas are planned. t’s rare to fall into a job that keeps you on your toes every day, but following the completion of my Sociology degree at Roehampton University, that’s what happened to me. Having spent my summer holidays and post-graduation working for a friend’s dad’s agency, I eventually landed a position at KFH in Wimbledon. This was almost a decade ago. I love every aspect of the job, but the real buzz you get from agreeing deals is what made me realise quite quickly that this was the right career path for me. Wimbledon is one of the few areas in London where you can wander the parks and green spaces and often forget you’re actually in London. Pockets of quiet, leafy residential roads surround the Village, offering residents more of a country feel. While heading down to the busy town centre, you’ll find restaurants, bars and cafes lining the vibrant streets. But that isn’t all; the area is

FAMILIES, PROFESSIONAL SHARERS AND CORPORATE TENANTS ARE ALL FIGHTING FOR PROPERTY

also packed with things to do. From watching a show at the Grade II listed New Wimbledon Theatre, or attending the weekly Wimbledon Park Farmers’ Market, through to experiencing the excitement of the oldest tennis tournament in the world at the All England Club. Wimbledon’s increasing popularity has had a significant impact on the lettings market over the years. This is most notable from the rent increases and the longer tenancy lengths, which are now around 16.5 months. In terms of demographics, families, professional sharers, professional couples and corporate tenants are all fighting for property. Families

are drawn to Wimbledon for many reasons, but the vast array of primary and secondary schools are one of the biggest. This means that particular areas such as Wimbledon Chase and Dundonald, which fall into school catchment areas, increase in demand. As a result, the under supply of rental properties in the area has had an effect, with rent prices averaging at £2,650 per month for a three bedroom family home. More and more new properties are being built here, and there are plenty more still in the pipeline. These properties are attracting young professionals, but they are also highly desirable to our corporate clients, who often like a sleek and contemporary finish. Wimbledon appeals to my clients in many ways. But for me, the early Georgian cottages, mixed with the handsome Victorian villas and sleek contemporary new builds, help provide inspiration and ideas for my own home. u

KFH LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE

K

FH has launched a new responsive website (www.kfh. co.uk) that has been months in the making. The new website aims to offer a ‘best in class’ experience, with a redesigned look and feel along with enhanced functionality. Customers are now able to easily navigate through the website, which presents easy to find and useful information. The search functionality has been dramatically overhauled and users can search for homes based on their requirements or priorities, from a basic search, draw search, map search, tube / train search, school search or location based (near me) search. The website has been aimed towards the key audience groups of buyers, sellers, landlords, tenants, investors and developers which means that each of these groups is served information that directly concerns them with an information hub of resources designed to help them on their property search.

In addition, the website now features a plethora of London information which includes extensive area guides, Land Registry sold price data and council tax data for all boroughs across Greater London. In addition, the London property market blog offers helpful advice to customers concerning all aspects of property in the Capital. Anna Macleod, Head of Marketing and Communications at KFH, comments: “Many of our customers are increasingly savvy about their property purchase, so having all of the facts before they even view a home is becoming progressively more important.” u

THE AREA IS QUICKLY BECOMING ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER PLACES TO LIVE FOR CORPORATE AND PROFESSIONAL TENANTS

project of regeneration in Nine Elms is one of the largest in Europe with 20,000 new homes due to be, or already, completed. The area is quickly becoming one of the most sought after places to live for corporate and professional tenants. This is unsurprising given its proximity and easy transport links to Parliament and Victoria, stunning location on the River Thames and the planned development of Vauxhall itself, which already has a hub of stylish bistros, independent shops and outdoor film screenings in the summer months. Henry Wiltshire is therefore excited to have recently opened another branch outside Vauxhall station. Having worked in the Battersea and surrounding areas for the last six years, the exhilaration of entire local communities being developed is felt on a day-to-day basis. 

kitchen with Caesarstone worktops, high-end appliances and Bose ceiling speakers, fully integrated wifi and cabled network in all the bedrooms and living rooms, Hansgrohe and Porcelanosa fixtures and fittings in the bathrooms and bespoke cabinetry in the master suite and bedrooms. Accessed directly from the kitchen is a pleasant walled garden with integrated planters and a decked area. Charlwood Terrace is just a short walk from the mainline railway station, which is why in the first wave of residential expansion from the high street that took place between 18501880, this road and others nearby were established.

The surrounding area was still dominated by market gardens. The terrace takes its name from the Charlwood family who owned much of the farm land west of the high street. Charlwood Terrace and the irregular network of streets mirror the original path system of the pre-19th century fields. The facades of these attractive flat fronted Victorian houses have remained virtually unchanged since their original construction. ◆

beautiful example of a comprehensively and very sensitively modernised semi-detached mid-Victorian freehold cottage. Of particular note is the generous ground floor reception space which flows through bi-folding doors out to the exceptionally private west-facing garden. The special character of the Coalecroft Road conservation area is derived from the pairs of early Victorian farmworker cottages lining a narrow street. Originally known as Upper Parkfields Cottages on Vinegar Hill, the local solicitor and property speculator Henry Scarth developed the street between 1846 and 1860, preserving part of the pattern of the former common fields of Putney. The result today is a charming and historic street. ◆
