or many June means one thing: Wimbledon Championship. It’s a twoweek period of intense competition amongst some of the world’s best. Tennis – and excuse me if I’m about to generalise – isn’t that interesting for children. At least when I was young, Wimbledon meant curtains drawn, tennis on in every room containing a television and my mother biting her nails, drinking a glass of Chardonnay. My brother and I could either head outside and play, or watch it with her. So for most of my childhood I avoided tennis like the plague. But around the age of 15, I forced myself to get involved, so I began playing at our local club and watching the odd match (towards the final, and far more exciting, end of the tournament). My interest grew, gradually, and now, as an adult, I actually enjoy watching Wimbledon. So if you, like me, are gearing yourself up for Wimbledon in June then head to page 20, where we’ve handpicked five of the best local places to watch the tennis. I also grabbed a moment with Richard E. Grant (page 16) to discuss his illustrious career, the role that launched him into stardom and more recent ones, his obsession with scents and his steadfast love for London. Our chic contributing fashion editor Charlotte Adsett has pulled together a stylish summer wardrobe, page 25 onwards, while our interiors guru Jessica Klingelfuss has studied the realms of resin, page 77. dance styles for a while. Calling the end result, ‘dancing like everyone I know,’ Sullivan’s show uncovers the delicacies of family life, unveils memory through music and movement, and touches upon the fragility of what is seen and what is felt. A brilliant performance that relies upon gut instinct to show the quick and honest physical reaction humans have to music. Another must-see is Fatherland by Nic Green. Born to a Scottish father she only met once, Green follows the mystery of her paternal line by evoking the land of her ancestors through dance. Accompanied by an ensemble of musicians, Fatherland draws on the archetypes of her bloodline: the cathartic dances of the ancient warrior women painted and wild, the sadness of the songs spoken in Gaelic tongue, and the patterns of the traditional Highland Jig. Each of these find new ways to communicate with the audience and combine dance, music and theatre so that the genre of these plays can’t be defined. Forward thinking and risk-taking, this is theatre at its best. 

he Place is the UK’s premier school for contemporary dance, where the great entertainers of the future go to hone their skills. Battersea Arts Centre is, arguably, Britain’s most influential theatre, an establishment that works hard to invent new pieces of timeless theatre. Combine the two entities together and what you have is a creative force to be reckoned with. That’s what’s happening until 5 June.

Staying true to The Place’s foundry vision, these visionary hubs will both be using performance art to try to improve society by entertaining and provoking their audience into thinking about things that matter: from the importance of life’s simple pleasures, to religion and the beginning of everything. Performer and producer Hannah Sullivan will be bringing her Battersea Arts Centre-commissioned show, Echo Beach to The Place. Fascinated by the way that the untrained person dances, Sullivan has been ‘collecting’ different

met Richard E. Grant on a sunny day in April at The Corner Restaurant and Champagne bar in Selfridges. One of Britain's most eminent acting talents, loved as much for his slurring turn in Withnail & I as for his humourless first footman in Gosford Park, I found myself a little intimidated. But when I arrived at the event, Grant got up and meandered over to introduce himself. “Hello, I’m Richard. You must be Romy,” he took my hand and shook it firmly, before making a joke - one I can’t remember because of a mild case of being struck by stardom - and warning me, with a wry smile, to eat all of my breakfast because he had forked out for it himself. Immaculately dressed in a slim cut navy blazer and with a leonine head of perfectly coiffed hair, Grant is every bit the veteran British thespian - but his self-effacing demeanor, raucous sense of humour and effortless British charm put me instantly at ease. Grant’s formidable acting career hasn’t slowed with age (he recently turned 58).

deals with failure and that is SOMETHING MORE PEOPLE might be Able to EMPATHISE with than success. His recent cameo in acclaimed American television series Girls is evidence of Grant’s ability to remain relevant. Lena Dunham, the writer, director and star of the series, wrote Grant into the role of Jasper - an onand-off-the-wagon cocaine addict indulging in an affair with a girl half his age. As a confessed fan of Withnail & I, it’s easy to see where Dunham’s inspiration for the character came from. There’s a mutual admiration between the two, palpable in the way Grant speaks about her. “[She] write[s] with such extraordinary insight and honesty,” he continues, describing her as an “uber multi-hyphenate phenomenon”.

Any good actor has a couple of stinkers on their resumé, and Grant is not exempt. 2014's Dom Hemmingway is definitely up there, and let's not forget Spice Girls: The Movie. But in general, Grant’s managed to avoid any major flops. From his recent role as Lord Michael Heseltine in 2011 The Iron Lady, to the voice of Percy in Disney’s Pocahontas, Grant’s repertoire is extensive to say the least - he starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s acclaimed Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992, The Age of Innocence in 1993, the aforementioned Gosford Park in 2001 and Bright Young Things in 2003. More recently, Grant played Simon Bricker, an art historian, in Downton Abbey and is currently filming forthcoming ITV drama Jekyll and Hyde. Even with a plethora of box office hits in the bag, the one film most people associate with Grant is Bruce Robinson’s 1987 cult classic, Withnail & I, in which Grant plays an alcoholic Nihlist with a penchant for drinking lighter fluid. Grant attributes the film’s flyaway success to the fact that it “deals with failure and that is something more people might be able to empathise with than success.”

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW

He continues, “[Withnail & I] has no plot nor any of the things every other successful movie relies on. The script is also scabrously witty and infused with profound loss and nostalgia. In other words, it’s truly romantic. “It opened every career door for me. In the three decades since it was made, it still gets quoted at me by total strangers on a daily basis.” With such success so early on his career, has anything else lived up to it? “Writing and directing my autobiographical film WAH-WAH was a real highlight too, as I was able to re-visit my incredibly dysfunctional family life from the safety of middle age.” Born of English, Dutch and German ancestry, Grant’s upbringing was a colourful one. His father, Henrik Esterhuysen, was head of education for the British government administration in the former British Protectorate of Swaziland. When he was ten, Grant witnessed his mother sleeping with his father’s best friend in the back of his car - a cataclysmic event which led to the subsequent divorce of his parents. Writing and producing the film WAHWAH in 2005 - an autobiographical take on this traumatic period of his life was, for Grant, “very intense and cathartic, while directing it was entirely liberating as we filmed in most of the locations where the key events in the story took place.” Surprisingly, Grant's mother gave the film her blessing, something he describes as “both generous and much appreciated.” A former sufferer of depression, Grant now speaks openly about mental health and attributes his recovery to 18-months of rigorous psychoanalysis, claiming that it saved his life. He also believes that acting has helped him to cope with painful memories from his past. “Acting is a great way of dealing with and confronting difficult issues, as you are always examining behavior and what motivates people to do the things they do.” With this in mind, I ask, is there anything he’d like to tell his younger self? “Rest easy. You will live beyond 52” – the age his father died – “You will fall in love. You will have a child. You will live in London. And you will go to Hollywood.”

He may not have made it outside of the O-Zone just yet, but Grant has recently branched into a surprising new industry. Last year he launched his first fragrance, Jack. Far from the Beyonces and Britneys of the fragrance world, Grant saw Jack as an opportunity to explore his obsession with scent. “I have been led by my nose all my life and compulsively sniffed everything in sight,” he admits. As a boy, his concerned parents asked why he felt the need to smell everything, to which he responded: “All animals smell everything, why not us?” At the age of 12 Grant, taken with a local girl, decided to create a perfume for her by boiling gardenia and rose petals RICHARD E GRANT’S LATEST FRAGRANCE COVENT GARDEN in sugar water, sealing them in jars and burying them in the garden. It didn’t work, but ignited a genuine interest in the art of fragrance making. Forty years later and, with the encouragement of his close friend fashion designer Anya Hindmarch, Grant took the plunge. Sleeved in a Union Jack-adorned canvas bag, the fragrance contains notes of lime, marijuana and mandarin, with heart notes of nutmeg and clove, and base notes of vetiver and musk. Grant . attributes the inclusion of cannabis to his upbringing in Swaziland, a place also known as The Gold Mine of Marijuana. Grant's latest newest scent, Covent Though Grant’s father wanted him to Garden, is available to buy this month. become a barrister, “I was so talkative Imbued with notes of rose, orange and argumentative, but law was never and carrot, the fragrance is inspired a serious consideration,” the actor by Covent Garden Market as featured originally wanted to tread the surface of in My Fair Lady - a healthy nod to his the moon rather than the boards. “Ever theatrical roots. since Neil Armstrong set foot on the Despite travelling the world with moon in 1969, when I was 12 years old, work, Grant is a determined Londoner. have I wanted to go into outer space.” “I love London for the variety of theatre, music, museums, galleries and history. They’re unbeatable. And, if a city could be deemed to have a sense of humour, London most definitely has that.” His favourite gallery is the National Portrait Gallery, while his theatre of choice is the National, and if you’re lucky you might spot him wandering the streets, probably en route to grab a bite at Spring, Skye Gyngell's new eatery in Somerset GRANT IN HIS SEMINAL ROLE IN WITHNAIL & I House. u

f you missed out on courtside tickets this year, don't panic; Wimbledon need not become yet another unattainably expensive sporting event you’re forced to live stream on your laptop. Or worse: watch on a “vintage” television set. No, you can do much better than that. This is precisely why we have sourced five of the best locations at which you to can watch all the Wimbledon 2015 action unfold. Massive outdoor screens, heckling Murray fans and an electric atmosphere are all compulsory components, so we recommend that you pack up a jug of Pimms and head straight to one of these screening hotspots in London. Let the nail-biting begin. 1 . H e n M a n H i ll / M u r r ay M o u n d s it called Henman Hill or I Murray Mound? Polka dots, antique jewellery and a new holiday wardrobe are essential buys this month Wo r d s c h a r l o t t e a d s e t t

V JEWELLERY Wo r d s s t e p h a n i e k i n g ttention fashion magpies: this is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill. SS15 is coming, and you need to be prepared. So heed our Public Service Announcement and arm yourself with summer’s hottest accessory label: two-time UK Watch & Jewellery Awards nominee, V Jewellery. No, literally; arm yourself with the covetable creations by this month's ‘Brand To Watch’. Whether it’s the fan favourite Simplicity Spine or Deco Chrysler rings, or the limited edition Astoria bracelet set in cubic zirconias, green adventurine and black agate, it is critical that you decorate your limbs with one of Laura Vann's lust-worthy pieces. Why? Because even though she only celebrated V Jewellery’s second anniversary in April, the West Midlands-based designer has already cemented her label on fashion’s most wanted list. Not bad for a Central Saint Martins Graduate who started a company at 22. Vann's impossibly cool pieces are often seen adorning the extremities of celebrities, It girls and bloggers, from Katy Perry to Millie Mackintosh. V Jewellery's timeless aesthetic withstands the rapidly changing fashion seasons. But surely accessories that expertly balance decadence with minimalism have an exorbitant price tag to match? Not the case; V Jewellery's Sterling Silver and semi-precious stone items start at the incredibly affordable £60. Achievable and aspirational? V Jewellery is the answer to every woman's prayers.u

t’s summer and the idea of long flowing locks gleaming in the sun is all I want. But that’s not quite my reality. My hair is tired, lank and split ends go on for what seems like miles. So when I visited Wimbledon Village’s most chic boutique salon earlier this month, I decided to take off more than my usual one centimetre. Wait for it: I asked for a mega three inches! You’re probably rolling your eyes, but for me that’s a big deal. I never really get my hair cut, let alone go from long haired to medium long. But I gritted my teeth and did it. My hair is thanking me now. Now I didn’t just refresh my tired tresses, I also went for a subtle balayage. Sharon Landmann, my hair stylist and the founder of Lulu Blonde, listened intently as I explained that, come summer, I like my hair natural, sun-kissed and glistening. She explained that, through the process of balayage – a form of sweeping natural colour through your hair – she could give me the illusion of being kissed by the (currently) nonexistant sun. As I sat back and sipped my black Americano, I watched as the friendly staff chatted away with their regular clients. This is the kind of place I’d want to become a regular. I guess that’s the general feeling in most of the shops, salons and restaurants in the Village. Anyway, after a good couple of hours and feeling at home, Sharon gave my hair a final brush and I was done. The end result was elegant but undone, with that little bit of edge the separates a good haircut from a great one. Top marks. u

I would recommend Malcolm to anybody who wants a top haircut.” “What a great find. Brilliant advice and then superb cut. Cheerful ambiance. You can even drop by between appointments. I have never experienced such all round customer care. I will return.” “ Karen was the perfect choice for my wedding. We worked together prior to the day to get my look perfected. That meant that when the time came we could relax have a laugh. She even helped me get dressed so as not to spoil the hair. It was magical and everyone loved my style.”

iding a horse is, despite what they say, not like riding a bike. Not taking to the saddle for, let’s say, ten years, does mean you forget some of the key skills of riding, for example: actually getting on a horse. When I was thrown back into the saddle last month, I momentarily forgot how to mount the damn thing and tried to drag myself up, ungracefully and unsuccessfully, head first onto it. I was given the chance to ride but while learning how to play the arduous sport of polo. In preparation for Ham Polo Club and Chesterton’s Polo in the Park event, I was invited to learn how to play the game under the watchful eye of the UK’s leading polo player Malcolm Borwick, who can also count himself a Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador. His unyielding approach to teaching payed off, as he took me from amateur – “I’ll take Romy, she’s never ridden before” (I had) – to Best Player of the day (I have the award to prove it). The day began with a brief history of the game, covering everything from chukkas to champagne, before we took to the field and branded our mallets. We learnt how to hit the ball in all directions with the mini mallet, before jumping on a wooden horse with the full sized stick. It wasn’t long until we were marched over to the layperson’s field and hopped onto the horses. Mine, a cool horse called Castore, was docile and responsive. By the end of the day, I was trotting around, wacking balls into the goal with ease. Learning to play polo isn’t something the club offers throughout the year, rather it’s an annual treat that keen polo watchers, riders or just curious beginners can take to before the clubs big event. What fun. ◆

ong before the weather is warm enough for my spring wardrobe, my head is telling me otherwise. A bold spring lip leads from the front and is the perfect segue into this most elusive of seasons. Wear it with the bare minimum make-up for the most modern approach, as beautifully demonstrated on the Missoni SS15 catwalk. Your lips will need a little tlc before you plunge in, however, and trust Charlotte Tilbury to come to the rescue with her Lip Love and Magic duo. Lip Love is a gentle lip scrub that will help lift off and smooth dry, rough patches, essential for a bright lip. Lip Magic is a gorgeously

hydrating balm that doesn’t leave the lips too greasy for lipstick application. Pink is my go-to spring shade and the NARS Satin lip pencil in Jardin Des Plantes really lifts a weekend wardrobe of denim and navy. Blot and reapply once or twice and it won’t budge. I do love an orange lip too and the Chantecaille lip chic is just sheer enough to look undone and relaxed while still delivering a punch. And just for fun (and because I had one of these when I was a young, make-up CHANTECAILLE obsessed girl), is Lipstick Queen’s latest Lip Chic in launch, Frog Prince. A green lipstick that Mandarin, £30, net-a-porter.com gives you a perfect ‘rosebud’ lip by adapting to your own lip colour. I still don’t know how it works (and don’t want to). Magic. ◆

Pasta with broad beans, tomatoes and feta

here is one particular grape variety that works so well with the fresh green flavour of broad beans, the tang of tomatoes and the chalky texture of feta, how can I recommend anything else? It’s Sauvignon Blanc. No matter where it’s grown it holds its identity well, making it a safe bet if you want zingy, freshly-cut herb flavours. Chile is still a very underrated country for this grape, so try this one, which is summer in a bottle. Carmen Wave Series Sauvignon Blanc 2014, £9.99; wMajestic.co.uk  T

Grilled mackerel with new potatoes

f this isn’t the kind of dish to eat out in the garden (now that’s it’s finally warm enough again) then I don’t know what is! Mackerel is so tasty by itself it doesn’t need to be dressed up too much, but as an oily fish, it’s useful to have super-fresh wine to cut through that richness. A wine which is bursting with cranberry freshness would be perfect, like the MIP Rosé 2014, £11.95; leaandsandeman.co.uk  I

Strawberries

he summery flavour of strawberries can be enhanced with many wines and a pink Champagne would be a delicious but decadent choice. If you don’t want to spend too much, there’s another hugely moreish Italian wine called Moscato d’Asti that’s a winner with strawberries and is usually more affordable too. It’s a slightly sweet and fizzy, low in alcohol and tastes of grapes and elderflowers, this one is seriously delicious. Einaudi Moscato d’Asti 2013, £13.50; ocado.com  T

a think and creamy sauce, the subtle flavours of the fish were enhanced by fresh fennel. My partner followed suit with seafood and opted for a comforting fish pie which was both warming and delicious. Feeling a little greedy, we also decided to split a ‘light main’: the goats cheese salad. Well worth ordering, this was the dish that really stood out. The warm goats cheese sat atop a mound of sticky roasted vegetables and lettuce, accompanied by a smokey black olive tapenade and warm French bread. Seriously scrumptious. Despite our buldging bellies, we finished our meal by sharing the ultimate summer pud: iced berries served with a minature jug of melted white chocolate. The combination of temperatures, textures and flavours made for a delightful finale. We left genuinely impressed and it’s not often you can say that you left a chain restaurant feeling truly satisfied. Côte is the exception. It has carved a name for itself because it sticks to what it knows: well cooked, classic French food. It may not be ground-breaking, but it’s sure as hell tasty. u

ôte is famous for bringing delicious French food to the high street. Starting out on Soho’s culinarily competative Wardour street back in 2008, this brasserie has become an ubiquitous presence on the UK food scene. Their latest branch is on Battersea Rise so I took a dinner date to discover if Côte is more than just a chain. Upon arrival we were bought two flutes of champagne by our bubbly French waitress. Off to a good start, we

jumped straight in and ordered the warm Roquefort salad and the crab mayonnaise. The salad was light and refreshing: velvety endive lettuce leaves came filled with tangy cheese and crunchy croutons. The crab mayonnaise was just as good, with delicately flavoured green components – avocado, cucumber, capers and tarragon – served on thick sourdough toast. It was bold but not overpowering. Next we moved onto mains, I ordered the fish of the day, which was roast seabass with braised fennel and champagne beurre blanc. Served in

GREECEis theWORD Helen Baron experiences the stripped-back serenity of Kefalonia Wo r d s H e l e n B a r o n

T

he Greek islands may have been popular with holidaymakers for nighon 50 years, but someone forgot to tell the people responsible for Kefalonia’s only airport. A small building tucked away in the island’s southwest corner, it’s not the most auspicious or well-appointed place to start your visit; fortunately, its small size means that no sooner are you out of the door and in your rental car than you’re leaving it far behind. The real Kefalonia immediately becomes apparent: winding roads, tiny villages, hills and valleys of pine and crumbling stone. And, of course, the light, described by Louis de Bernières (author of the bestselling Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, set on the island) as ‘overpowering’. Forget the cheesy commercialism of Corfu and the whitewashed minimalism of Mykonos; Kefalonia occupies its own special spot on the spectrum of Greek island life,

a spot defined by the rugged earthiness of the landscape, the friendliness of the inhabitants and an appetite for the good life. The other defining factor is plate tectonics, or earthquakes to you and me. Kefalonia has experienced a few (including one in the 1950s that shook almost every building in the island to pieces), and as a result you can’t expect much in the way of historic architecture or level ground. Of course, this only increases the raw romance of the place – the roads torn to gravel and beaches edged with tumbled stone are incredibly picturesque – while serving to emphasise the character and charm of the few spots the great quake left unscathed. Nowhere is this more evident than in Fiskardo, the island’s most chi-chi spot and a regular stop-off for celebs and oligarchs yachting their way around the Ionian Sea. Fiskardo survived the great quake unscathed, and retains its traditional aspect: colourful homes

scrambling up the shores of the dinky harbour. It’s close to the neighbouring isle of Ithaka, which is visible across the strait. Day tours to Odysseus’ fabled kingdom are available – though many believe that the Ithaka of ancient myth was actually Kefalonia itself. A couple of hours south of Fiskardo lie the more populous and mainstream resorts of Sami and Scala, great for lazy days at

ENJOYMENT Book your rental car in advance The airport’s major operators sell out quickly in high season. We recommend using local company Greekstones, which has offices across the island and will send someone to meet you on arrival. Super friendly and professional, too. ◆ Go boating The island is peppered with hidden coves and beaches not reachable on foot. Rent a boat (again, you’re advised to book a day or two in advance) and make the most of the coast’s secret bays and clear waters. ◆ The Captain’s Bar Legendary Scala watering-hole featuring lurid cocktails, soapy disco music and lots of photos of Simon Pegg (yes, Simon Pegg). Too bizarre to explain or understand: just go. ◆ Watch the roads It’s worth checking with a local which roads are open; the island is beautiful and the landscape varied, which makes driving around fun, but the frequent tremors mean there are sometimes rock falls and subsequent diversions. ◆ Go boating Small powerboats and larger sailing vessels are available to hire or charter from many of the main resort beaches, especially those at Scala and Fiskardo. Getting out onto the water is the best way to see the island – and discover your own private cove.

the beach and long lunches in the many beach bars. There’s also the tiny island capital, Argostoli, and, in a small olive grove outside the southern village of Spartia, our home for the week: the sleekly minimalist Villa Christina, one of a diverse range of luxury properties run by one of the region’s most trusted proprietors, Unique Villas. The island is serenely beautiful, the sea stunningly clear and the beaches some of the best in Europe. Be sure to make time for Myrtos Beach, hidden away at the foot of teetering cliffs on the island’s west coast, where white sand fades to grey stones at the waves’ edge and the land drops suddenly away, making for pleasantly powerful surf and water of a brilliant blue. We also made time to visit the Drogarati and Melissani caves, the latter entailing a boat ride across an underground lagoon; together, the natural spectacles provide enough entertainment for a morning before you head back to the beach (or your villa’s enticing infinity pool) for a lazy afternoon. Our final evening at the villa saw a personal chef, arranged by Unique, cook up a traditional Kefalonian feast, which left us all impressed by the variety of the local cuisine. It was the perfect way to end our stay in this most happy and relaxed of Greek islands – and the perfect way to woo us back for future visits.   During 2015, Unique Villas is offering classic villas from €699 per villa per week during low season to €4,000 per villa per week during peak season. There are also four new luxury villas, which range from €2,159 per villa per week during low season to €8,919 per villa per week during peak season. urs is a spacious, luxuriously fitted double aspect room with beautiful views, a large bedside bathtub, an insanely big and comfortable bed and a well-stocked minibar, all in a palate of stylish French greys and natural, earthy textures. Stylish touches include a retro radio and a huge shower; everything is tasteful and functions perfectly. 

THE RESTAURANT

T

his place is all about food. Diners come from further afield than the ingredients, thanks to the 25 Mile Menu which requires that anything not grown or reared in the Pig’s own kitchen garden must hail from the area. So there’s beef from Frome, chocolate from Shepton Mallet (okay, with some imported help), cheddar from Cheddar, bread from Bath plus honey, oils, fish and more from within striking distance. On site are the eponymous pigs (you can’t miss them. The snoring was impressive on our tour) as well as an extensive vegetable garden, deer, chickens and a corrugated iron smokery, where the kitchen smokes its own salmon and salt, among other things. Dinner is improbably delicious and the restaurant is popular with a diverse crowd – we spotted Daisy Lowe and Rhys Ifans dining with a large group.

WHAT TO DO

E

at, mostly. Then walk. Breakfast is a huge treat – kippers, flawless bread and granola (choose between healthy and luxury versions) as well as all the usual options, and wellies are available to loan. Walk around the Mendip Hills and Leigh Woods before returning to lounge in the bar, where an impressive collection of homeinfused spirits opens up countless cocktail possibilities. There’s a vast library of dvds to borrow. Though if you’re confusing the description of ‘near Bath’ with ‘in Bath’ – don’t. It’s not in Bath and you definitely can’t walk into town. 

ith summer holidays, sunshine and beaches just W around the corner, combining language lessons with water sports and cultural trips is an excellent way to boost your child’s skills, over the long break. At a recent Chatham House event, the place of English as a global language was discussed. Key points that resonated were that yes, English drives influence, but to act locally languages are essential. Europeans with languages are taking the jobs of Brits, who increasingly find that they can’t compete with their continental peers; and as competition for places heightens, leading MBA graduate schemes are viewing languages as a requirement. The learning and speaking of languages helps to make us recognise that the world is a multi-faceted place, with cultural and linguistic subtleties driving both family and business life. Aside from all of these formalities, languages make life richer, more vibrant; introducing them to your child early on will ensure that they can reap the benefits later on. 

The learning of LANGUAGES helps us recognise that the world is a MULTIFACETED place

few months ago, John Cridland, the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) Director General, criticised the quality of science teaching in our primary schools: “Science education in primary schools is being squeezed out, with over half of teachers believing it has become less of a priority with too many schools struggling to teach the recommended two hours every week.” His remarks followed research carried out by Brunel University and the CBI, which also found a third of teachers lack confidence when teaching the subject. “How can we expect to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers if we don’t deliver high-quality and inspiring science lessons at primary school age?” asks Cridland. A new education company, Richer Education, has set up a Science Saturday School to tackle the problem. Conducted in partnership with Imperial College, London, the classes “aim to inspire and motivate children aged 5-11”, says cofounder Rafael Hernandez. “We want to get them while they are young,” he explains. “Science education in secondary schools is not engaging students, so we want to get students to really love it at primary so that they go on to study it successfully.” Hernandez, 42, a maths teacher originally from Venezuela, teamed up with Sian Chalkly, a science specialist and fellow teacher at a Woolwich secondary school, with the idea of providing inspiring, hands-on science lessons for children. “The emphasis in the classes is on practicals,” says Hernandez. “We want children to explore science with their own hands; they must touch and see at the same time as understanding the science behind it.” It is this practical element of science education that Hernandez says has fallen victim to the relentless target-driven culture of schools. State primaries generally have one teacher for everything and simply don’t have the time to cover the whole curriculum

89 B&C_JUNE15_Education.indd 89

as it is. A 2013 Ofsted investigation found that science lessons were not good enough in more than a quarter of schools and only one-in-20 teachers in primary schools holds a science degree. Secondary schools have the facilities and the specialist teachers but ‘teaching to the test’ rarely allows for the time for practical experiments or a deeper understanding of the topics. “It’s all about targets,” says Hernandez. “When there is a topic that might require greater in-depth explanation teachers just skip the subject altogether. “Things aren’t necessarily much better in the private sector. Prep schools often have the specialist teachers but rarely allow the time for practicals. For two hours every Saturday morning the children have access to Imperial College’s labs and facilities, where PhDladen scientists such as Sian Chalkly teach sessions linked to the Key Stage 2 curriculum, centred on a theme or topic that cover all three sciences and each session is based around a practical experiment. Future plans include further partnerships with universities across London. Ultimately, says Hernandez, “we are not reinventing the wheel or changing the world, we just want to get students to love science.”  For more information or to book a class, visit richereducation.co.uk/saturday-school

NICOLE CHAMBERLAND Chamberland Residential Photography

R E B ECCA N O O N A N

I

t wasn’t too long ago that I wrote a brutally honest piece for Absolutely recounting our humble beginnings, but after this year’s ESTAS Awards win, I thought it fitting to keep it up to date. With just over four years of trading under our belt now, it’s strangely difficult to sit back and reflect on what we’ve achieved so far in such a short period of time. This industry moves so fast, people come and go, and I was only last week talking with a colleague saying, “Remember when we worked in a basement?” It honestly seems like 20 years ago. Chamberland Residential started out (very modestly) in January 2011. With our little basement suite on Putney High Street, it was only two of us trying to get this business off the ground and start the brand. Of course, with any new business there are loads of things to worry about and consider, like having enough money at the end of the month to pay your hard working staff (including myself). Thankfully, those days seem to be behind us. We’ve been at our

current premises in Putney (above ground) at 212 Upper Richmond Road since 2012. Now with a team of five, we couldn’t be happier. These last two years have been so important for our growth as a business. Winning the Best Letting Agent London (South) Silver award in 2014 and most recently the Best Letting Agent London (South) Gold award 2015 just makes us feel all the more established in an area that has 14 agents on my door step and another 10 or more just on the

BEST LETTING AGENT LONDON (SOUTH) GOLD MAKES US FEEL ALL THE MORE ESTABLISHED other side of Putney. You have to be pretty darn good at your job to survive in an area with as many well-established chain agents as Putney has. The ESTAS (estate and letting agent awards) are very special awards to receive because they are voted for by the public, not a panel of industry judges. It is only our private clients, our harshest

critics, who have done business with us in the last year, who are able to vote. This means that if we didn’t do a good job, we don’t get a good score, it's as simple as that. This year’s voting showed 137 of my beloved landlords taking the time to vote for us and giving us a collective score of 98%, securing us our second Gold position in a very competitive group of local lettings agents. This is the thing I’m most proud of because it is a true reflection of the service we offer and how happy our current clients are with us. 2014 also came with some personal blessings for me. Penny (my Labrador puppy) joined our team with boundless excitement and as our designated “customer greeter” she’s certainly loved by all who meet her… I actually have clients that pop in just to see her, not me! So what’s to come? Well, I’m sure the election results and the market uncertainty have given some in our industry a few sleepless nights, but one thing I know is true… hard work, good, consistent customer service, and personable people will usually get you the results every time! u

here is a lot of regulation and legislation when you let a property and any landlord must ensure they are fully compliant. My advice would be to seek professional advice by using a reputable agent who will be able to advise you on all these aspects of the rental and to arrange for your property to be fully managed. This makes the process much smoother, as the agent looks after

graduates because of the party atmosphere, tube links and a fantastic choice of sports on the common. Young singles and affluent professional couples are drawn here by the vibrant lifestyle too.   KFH, Clapham Common 020 3700 8555; kfh.co.uk

every stage of the tenancy, from collecting rent to dealing with any maintenance issues, and will also ensure the landlord is compliant throughout the tenancy. Having your rental property professionally managed will help ensure your assets are well looked after and any problems are fi xed quickly. Your property is also likely to attract longer term tenancies.   John D Wood & Co. 020 8995 9394; johndwood.co.uk

ARTIST FRANCIS BACON’S FORMER HOME IN BATTERSEA IS UP FOR SALE he former home of Battersea’s Prince of Wales Drive’s most famous resident – artist Francis Bacon, who lived and worked in the area for years – is currently up for sale. The mansion flat, which Bacon shared with two friends, is where the artist had his studio and in which

he was known to wipe his paint-spattered hands on the curtains. Situated on the third floor of Overstrand Mansions, the four bedroom, two reception flat facing Battersea Park is available for £1.65 million. The new Royal College of Art - based in Battersea – has also benefited in recent years from the artist’s legacy, with the sale of his painting; ‘Study from the Human Body, Man Turning on the Light’, which was given by the artist as rent for a studio that he occupied in the College for a short period in the late 1960s. The painting was sold at Christie’s for just over £8 million and all the proceeds have been invested directly into the construction of the new College. u

School choirs and a Selfie ‘photo at the fete’ competition will provide additional attractions. his property has so many stories to tell that you’d never be short of dinner party topics – in fact, the kitchen/ diner was once the main recording room in a studio where Shirley Bassey, Queen, Bryan Ferry and John Lennon all laid down tracks. Such popularity has also brought attention from buyers; it’s currently one of the most popular properties on website OnTheMarket.com in London, which may be because any music fan is likely to have an interest in the address. More than 300 silver, gold and platinum discs were produced at Lansdowne Studios between the late 1950s and the early Noughties, and its musical past involved some pretty colourful visitors. After an all-night session, the Sex Pistols had sprayed shaving foam all over the studio window, their dog had messed on the carpet and they’d spilt wine over a mixing desk, according to the studio’s engineer. When it closed in 2006, the current owner completely renovated the space, discovering even more about its history. Built in 1904 as

LANSDOWNE HOUSE PREVIOUSLY HOUSED A STUDIO SPACE AS WELL AS A SMOKING ROOM AND EVEN A THERMAL BATH a place where struggling painters could work, Lansdowne House previously housed a studio space as well as a smoking room and even a thermal bath. The property was completely updated, two big skylights were installed and there are now four double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, along with two terraces, one of which can be used for parking. However, there are still nods to the past; in the wooden-panelled conservatory room, a cupboard retains the ornate Edwardian coat hooks that were used by the painters, while black-and-white photographs of the artists who recorded there hang on the white corridor walls - which Marsh and Parsons says could be included in the price. “Everything is open to negotiation and the apartment’s illustrious

151 B&C_June15_MOST POPULAR_For_C&A.indd 151

recent history is certainly beautifully documented by the photos – it would be a shame to see the collection and the property separated,” says Keith Gorny, Prime Sales Director at Marsh & Parsons’ Kensington branch. The maisonette, in Holland Park, London, has undergone such a successful and stylish transformation that it was featured in magazines and on TV shows, including Grand Designs. “While every property we deal with in Prime Central London has qualities that set it apart to a greater or lesser degree, this really is an exceptional space,” says Keith. Even though it’s priced at £7.5 million, the property isn’t at the top of the market in Notting Hill and Holland Park - a market that Keith says has quietened down a little locally. “Activity is thinner than over the corresponding period last year but this is to be expected during an election year,” he says. “Transactions continue and values are holding up. A notable Marsh & Parsons sale over the last month has included some record breaking prices, not least a Notting Hill house at £24 million that’s set a new precedent!” u

VICTORIAN VALUES Identikit investment to period perfection Wo r d s NIGEL LEWIS

T

here are a handful of facts about London’s Victorian homes that I reel out at dinner parties, in part to stop people asking how much their homes are worth, but really because I think they are astounding. If you live in a Victorian house or apartment in London then you are residing in a living piece of mind boggling history. The era, which in architectural terms last approximately 60 years, was so different from now it’s hard to paint a believable picture – and millions of Londoners live in the results. First let me do the maths. Between 1841 and 1911 approximately 300,000 homes were built in London, many

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

in a very similar style. This is ironic because, although we think of our city as largely a Victorian one, houses from the era now make up just 10% of the Capital’s household total of 3.1 million. Another extraordinary fact is that 90% of London’s Victorian homes were built to be rented, and not owned. It was really only the larger properties, built for London’s super wealthy, that were bought. For the most part, the landlord (who was usually also the builder) controlled the property market. But another characteristic of the Victorian home – their uniformity – is less surprising. While many purists complain that ‘Barratt’ homes tend to all look the same, the same can be said for many Victorian

ones. In the early days of Queen Victoria’s reign a lack of any rules about architecture, build quality or green belt meant Victorians were free to build how they liked. This, some argue, is why the identikit Victorian home is rife in London, and why so many streets of its Victorian streets look similar – because developers preferred the economy of off-the-shelf designs. Despite this uniformity, period properties command a premium today. In 2013 researchers from property consultants Huntly Hopper found that period properties had risen in price four times faster than their new-build counterparts, particularly in central London. But what is it about Victorian homes that makes them so valuable? The most plausible answer to this question is that it’s all down to space and location. Victorian homes were built when London’s population was soaring, but still small by today’s standards (3.9 million in 1871 compared to 8.2 million today). The land in fast-expanding suburbs such as Islington, Paddington, Belgravia, Holborn, Finsbury, Shoreditch, Southwark and Lambeth was, in general, not expensive to buy and therefore builders had the luxury of space to play with – something their counterparts today do not. But let’s not forget design. Victorian homes also feature the kind of detail we like to believe is the mark of quality. The gothic and regency styles were usually the inspiration for these ‘dressings’ and can include pilasters and columns outside your front door, ornate window lintels and even pediments, large bay windows, the use of coloured bricks to create patterns, and decorative rooftops. With this much stacked in their favour, I guess I shall be talking about them over three courses for some time to come. u

PROPERTY / AWARDS

THE ESTAS AWARDS

In the London South region there was a surprise gold for first time entrant Patrick Henry based in Clapham. Henry who only started the agency just over a year ago said, “In an industry that is moving further into the online sphere, it is critical that traditional estate agents focus on the service they deliver for their clients. The best form of advertising for us is word of mouth.” Chamberland Residential took the gold for Best Letting Agent in London South as rated by landlords. “The ESTAS are the pinnacle of awards in an industry for those who

ondon agents took centre stage at The ESTAS this April. The awards, which were once again hosted by TV Property Expert Phil Spencer, were presented at a lavish lunch and awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane and were attended by 800 of the UK’s top property professionals. The awards, celebrating their 12th year, determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK through research carried out amongst customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent. Customers completed over 25,000 surveys during the competition. Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003 said, “An agent’s role is to guide people through one of the most stressful times in their lives and that’s not an easy job. The ESTAS

help agencies to focus on customer service levels and that’s why firms keep coming back year after year.” The Edmonton branch of Kings Group won gold for the Best Estate Agent category in the London North region and five other Kings branches were shortlisted across the South East. Karl Knipe Director at Kings Group said, “The ESTAs is the premier property industry litmus test for customer satisfaction.” In the Best Letting Agent category, Thorgills Chiswick won the gold for landlord feedback. Ben Madden, MD at Thorgills said, “Having won two ESTAS in 2014, we entered again this year to help ensure our exceptional service standards were being maintained. Given that the awards are based on client votes, the opportunity to independently review the quality of our work is extremely beneficial. Thankfully the hard work everyone puts in, once again paid off!“

truly care about the work they do and the customer service they give” said Nicole Chamberland who owns the agency. “Being rated by your very own clients is the only way to truly know how well you’re doing. This is our second gold and our fourth award since we started trading in 2011. You also get to see your clients’ comments on your performance over the year, which literally brings tears to my eyes each time I read them... it makes all the stress, sweat and tears completely worth it in the end!” Simon Brown who owns The ESTAS said “The ESTAS are special because shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. Just taking part shows an agent’s commitment to their customers and to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself. The ESTAS competition for 2016 is already underway and agents, mortgage brokers and conveyancers can register via thestas.com.
