MAY / 2014 CONTENTS 5 9
The soul cannot thrive in the absence of a garden,’ wrote Sir Thomas More, trusted chancellor to Henry VIII (until he lopped his head off, that is). Which of course makes the majority of us Londoners a soulless lot. Except southwest Londoners that is; we’re lucky enough to have a high proportion of garden-adorned housing in our areas, not to mention an abundance of green spaces. One of these gardens has even been nominated best in the country. Owner Jonathan McKee tells us all about how his bijou Balham garden was nominated for the National Garden Scheme on p.50. Equally impressive is the Old English Garden in Battersea Park, created to provide a therapeutic escape for the disabled and vulnerable. Katy Parker went to investigate on p.58. But if the weather doesn’t leave you horticulturally inclined, we have a ‘how to’ demonstration from award-winning florist Robbie Honey, who’ll teach you how to do an exquisitely simple yet sophisticated centerpiece with orchids. Or, if you’re not green-fingered in the slightest, why not just put your feet up and watch the new series of Fifteen to One, presented by local treasure Sandi Toksvig. Read my interview with her on p.19. One last thought to leave you with, according to the wisdom of American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox – ‘A weed is but an unloved flower.’ Come on people, it’s time to show the love…

I’m Stella! And I’m Jack! As you can probably tell, we’re related. We’ve always been together and are utterly inseparable – we’ve got a secret paw-shake and everything. We didn’t have a brilliant start in life and have mainly lived outside, but we took care of each other and are here today looking for some humans that we can now take care of! There may be a slight
adjustment period, us being more used to alley ways than cozy kitchens, and our new humans might need a little previous experience but we promise all the work will be worth it. We honestly can’t wait to make our little family that bit bigger! If you can offer Stella and Jack a second chance, please call Battersea Dogs & Cats Home on 0843 509 4444 for more information.

IN THE CINEMA
MALEFICENT nce upon a time, there was a beautiful princess called Aurora, who had two loving parents, three fairy godmothers and who was cursed to prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her 18th birthday and fall into an everlasting sleep. But this story isn’t about her. Angelina Jolie stars in the highly anticipated film about one of Disney’s most evil villains, providing an insight into the origins of Maleficent. Here’s a hint: she didn’t start off bad. Born beautiful and pure of heart (we can only assume her ominous sounding name was given ironically) and raised in a charming and peaceful forest kingdom, Maleficent starts off like many fairy tale inhabitants. But when her home is
O
threatened by an invading army she rises to its defense only to be ruthlessly betrayed – an act that turns her heart to stone. In a vengeful rage, Maleficent curses the granddaughter of her enemy, bringing us up to date with the 1959 version of Sleeping Beauty. Directed by Robert Stromberg, starring Angelina Jolie and featuring a haunting soundtrack that includes songs from indie darling Lana del Ray, this film could either be a brilliant addition to the Disney canon or destroy everyone’s childhood. We can’t wait to see which way it goes. DIRECTED BY ROBERT STROMBERG STARRING ANGELINA JOLIE In cinemas 28 MAY

LA CUCINA NAPOLETANA NEAPOLITAN COOKING...WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO US AT Donna Margherita?
‘our vera pizza napoletana is famous in both london & napoli’
t’s memories of coming home from school and smelling the different dishes prepared by the neighbours as we walked through the narrow vicoli of Napoli. All those wonderful flavours filling the air sends your olfactory senses into overdrive. For example, il profumo del mare (the perfume of the sea) evokes the essence of our signature dish – Linguine with lobster, cherry tomatoes from Mount Vesuvius garlic and just a sprinkling of fresh chilli. As with all Neapolitan recipes, the emphasis is always on the freshest produce – we just turn up the volume. The entire region of Campania is
I
renowned for the quality of its produce, and this is reflected in the approach to food and cooking in general. It is little wonder that 4 million people choose to live in proximity of one of the most turbulent volcanos in the world. The land around this mountain is so fertile and helps produce the best tomatoes – the vital ingredient for our ‘Vera Pizza Napoletana’ for which we are famous in both London and Napoli.
Campanian cuisine is varied and we pride ourselves in always sourcing the best produce. Mozzarella from Battipaglia, artichokes from Paestum, artisan pasta from Gragnano and black truffles from Avellino are just few stars from our specials board, which changes on a weekly basis. And as the Romans used to say, dulcis in fundus (or ‘sweets at the end’) – don’t miss our pastiera (ricotta, wheat and candied citrus peel tart) or a wonderful fragrant limoncello-infused baba... BLACK VENUS by James MacManus lack Venus captures the artistic scene in the great French capital city, at a time when the likes of Dumas and Balzac argued literature in the cafes of the Left Bank. Among the bohemians, the young Charles Baudelaire stood out – dressed impeccably thanks to an inheritance that was quickly vanishing. Still at work on the poems that he hoped would make his name, he spent his nights enjoying the alcohol, opium and women who filled the seedy streets of the city. One woman would catch his eye, a beautiful Haitian cabaret singer named Jeanne Duval who would irrevocably alter the course of his life.

If you like crime-novels by Ian Rankin and Peter James, you will love this. Twenty years ago seven rich, privileged students became friends at their exclusive private school, Potter’s Field. Now they have started dying in the most violent way imaginable. Detective Max Wolfe has recently arrived in the Homicide division of London’s West End Central, 27 Savile Row. Soon he is following the bloody trail from the backstreets and bright lights of the city, to the darkest corners of the internet and all the way to the corridors of power.

THE HIVE by Gill Hornby et in an imaginary South London private primary school this is a wickedly funny, it is also a fascinating and subtle story about group politics and female friendship. From the joys and perils (well, mainly perils) of the Lunch Ladder, to the military operation that is the Car Boot Sale, via the dos and don’ts of dressing your child as a Dalek, all human life is here. Gill’s book provides an entertaining and funny insight into a world both parents and those without children will find hilarious. The perfect summer read as you lounge by the pool.

he Wandsworth Fringe Festival launches this month with the promise of a ‘whirlwind showcase’. The aim is to foster a positive sense of place and inspire selfawareness, collective community spirit and cultural richness. Vibrant, fresh and inclusive, the festival will create opportunities for new connections within the southwest London community, involving traditional and nontraditional arts for all ages and backgrounds. With a line-up that seeks to engage everyone in a rewarding experience, there are a number of community-led events during the Fringe Festival that specifically encourage talent from the grassroots. Look out for World Heart Beat Music Academy and Furzedown Oak Sculpture Trail – two projects I’m hoping to see. The World Festival Network suggests that, ‘Fringe Arts is about support, development and accessibility for everyone involved in a creative platform and delivering a unique and organic occasion.’ When it comes to the Wandsworth Fringe Festival, nothing could be truer – this is an event which is truly communityled. ‘This platform enables anyone to make creativity happen, including those who might not normally get involved,’ explains festival producer Cath Mattos. ‘It’s everyone’s festival.’ During the Fringe Festival I will open a group exhibition of artwork – Move – that has been made by emerging grassroot talent. The creative process was led by eight professional artists

and several local charities: The Hebe Foundation, IntoUniversity Lambeth, WoW Mums as well as Christ Church CE primary school in Battersea. All were instrumental in the creation of Move, which has hosted workshops for local children and young people of all ages since October. Inspired by reflections on performance and movement, workshop participants busily created pieces alongside professional artists, regardless of their experience. I was delighted to see so many of all ages working in ceramics, cartoons, collage, drawing, painting and sculpture. Over those months I witnessed vast amounts of self-expression. The process seemed to engage their sense of artistic discovery, and all participants made
ate last year, it partnered in a pioneering pilot for 18 young adults from South London, ages 18 to 35, who were accessing mental health services. After an intensive four week programme they performed to an audience of workers, friends and family at Southwark's Jerwood Space. This partnership involved South London’s Maudsley Charity, Guy's and St Thomas' Charity, The Institute of Psychiatry and front line early invention teams in Lambeth and Southwark. Their transformative approach includes inviting friends and families of participants to attend performances in venues where they may never have been, or thought it possible to go.

impressively rapid progress, their talent and confidence flourishing from one art-making session to the next. Local freelance cartoonist Rob Buchan was especially impressed by the budding cartoonists in a group of Year 6 students, commenting on how they showed tremendous natural drawing abilities and focus. One local parent, Mia, who is an artist, attended all of Rob’s cartooning sessions and feels strongly that creativity must be higher up the agenda at primary and secondary school: ‘Art unlocks emotions and self-expression, which helps children in the breadth of their education.’ Another
mother, commenting on her ten year old daughter’s workshop experience, explained how ‘this has been fantastic for bringing out Charmaine's creativity. I have observed her become more adventurous in her drawing as a result.’ Meanwhile the mother of 11-year-old Ashur told me she is grateful for this terrific opportunity for her son, who thoroughly enjoyed it. She was delighted to see him working directly with professional artists who knew how to nurture his creative side. Around 90 workshop places were taken between October and March over about 60 hours. This gave participants time with professional artists who they otherwise wouldn’t have worked alongside, therefore exposing them to new influences and networks. 14-year-old Eric is an example of how these new connections and experiences can inspire artistic pathways. Following on from his success at last year’s group exhibition, he has since made a new ceramics piece for Move, inspired by his love of theatre and moulding clay. My hope is creative inspiration for all walks of life, of a kind that influences and enhances personal identity and spirit.
private view evening on 15th May will celebrate the admirable work by all of the Move artists and workshop hosts, whose families, colleagues and friends are encouraged to come along. We’ll also enjoy a short presentation by ten young members of Dance United’s London Performance Company. City Stories is their new physical theatre piece combining theatrical movement and text with athletic dance and quirky idiosyncrasies. It explores the urban realities of several unique individuals. Dance United advocates personal development through the transformative power of dance for all ages who are excluded, at risk and vulnerable.

Laughter is just the spoonful of sugar for something you want to say
MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF SANDI TOKSVIG ARE AS FOLLOWS: warm, witty and, most of all, wary. ‘Can you just say I live in southwest London?’ she asks. ‘The world is full of nutters.’ The diminutive Danish presenter (she’s 4’11’’) has recently moved off her riverboat on the Thames where she lived for four and a half years, moored off Wandsworth Park – ‘I loved every minute of it, but my partner became very ill with asthma, and the day we moved off the river it went. The Thames is filthy.’ Now she’s taken up residence locally on terra firma, but her reluctance to divulge more is understandable – when she first came out in the media, her and her partner had to go into hiding after receiving death threats. Born in Denmark, Toksvig was raised in the States, being thrown out of school after school for her indifferent attendance. She was then sent to an English boarding school – ‘a culture shock’ – before going on to Cambridge, where she acted in Footlights alongside contemporaries Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and Hugh 19
B&C_May_SANDI TOKSVIG.indd 19

Laurie. A career as a children’s TV presenter ensued, and three decades later Toksvig is still entertaining viewers with her quick wit and sharp intelligence on shows like Mock the Week, QI and Have I Got News For You, and on the air waves too as the chair for Radio 4’s News Quiz. Today Toksvig is working on – deep breath – a sitcom for the BBC, a play about an old people’s home, a musical about Dusty Springfield and a book set in 1843 about an Irish family escaping the famine to Oregon. And now she's also found time to take to our TV screens once again, hosting the come back series of legendary quiz show, Fifteen to One. This time, the format has been changed to allow more presenter-contestant interaction, that is to say, more Sandi time – ‘I did say to them I can’t just ask questions and be mean, it’s not really my thing. I like getting to know people.’ Most people, at least; Toksvig can be withering when she wants to be, with many a politician falling foul of her sharply astute wit (much to the delight of her viewers, I might add). And for her, humour isn’t just about entertainment, it's a tool to convey a political message too. ‘I think on the News Quiz, the stuff that Jeremy Hardy says is brilliant because it’s not only funny, but he makes a very good political point. The laughter is the just spoonful of sugar sometimes for something you want to say.’ Sugar for the audience maybe, but what
about the politician? Is there ever a limit as to how far you can go when it comes to political satire? ‘Not so far,’ she says smiling. ‘The thing is, there’s no limit as to where the politicans will go, which does make our job easier. So how far can we go? Let’s see how far the politicians go. Let’s see how far Nigel Farage or Michael Gove goes.’ You can see its potency. When a politician’s policies become, quite literally, laughable, it’s bound to have an effect. But it’s also a tough act to keep up because the pressure to be constantly witty and engaging must be stressful. ‘I’ve been doing it so long that I don’t really think about it,’ she says nonchalantly. ‘I think the only bit about being in the public eye that is tricky is occasionally people write things and you think, ‘Well, that isn’t what happened’, but that’s part of life.’ She is, of course, referring to a recent smear campaign orchestrated by Daily Mail columnist A.N. Wilson who branded her ‘Toxic Toksvig’ for an alleged attack on Kate Middleton during a TV appearance. ‘Oh it was ridiculous,’ she says crossly. ‘Nothing could be further from the truth. I took them to the press complaints commission and I won, but that’s not the bit anyone remembers; they remember that A.N. Wilson said these things. But A.N. Wilson was completely wrong and he did that glorious thing of not bothering to put a single fact into his article. My dad
I took them to the press complaints commission and won, but that’s not the bit anyone remembers was a journalist, my grandfather was a journalist, my brother is a journalist and I am saddened by some of the level of journalism that I see. I wouldn’t even call it journalism. It was just shockingly bad.’ ‘Should I worry about it? No. Do I spend my time reading these things? No. Do I check myself on Google? No. Because you know what, it’s a wonderful world and its full of great and interesting things and you have to move along.’ But do I believe this? Hmm...no. I’m surprised by how visibly rankled Toksvig still is by the article, despite its laughability. Yes, you can understand that it must be frustrating, but for someone who obviously has a fantastic sense of humour and can spot the comedy in every situation, I’m surprised she doesn’t get the joke. I even find myself reassuring her that no one with a brain cell would take the article seriously. Trying to move on, I point out that maybe she should Google herself, because if she did she’d find a fan site called F*ck Yeah, Sandi Toksvig, a labour of love created by a Portsmouth student where Toksvig currently stands as chancellor. ‘Is there really?’ she laughs riotously, her mood lightening instantly. ‘Oh bless her! I must make sure she gets a first!’ And just like that, Sandi Toksvig is back to her best – jovial, jolly and very funny. Fifteen to One begins on 7th April on Channel 4 at 4:30pm; channel4.com

DATE FOR
YOUR DIARY 35th Open Studios Art Show in SW London
W
IMBLEDON ART STUDIOS will be celebrating its 35th Art Show between Thursday 15th and Sunday 18th May, with 150 artists taking part, in what it is one of the largest studio complexes in the country. Four days of open doors when art collectors from around UK and Europe meet under one roof to visit the studios of artists whose work is generally shown in
main international art fairs and prestigious galleries, as well as the newest emerging talent from Europe’s leading art colleges. ‘The show is well known for its diversity, as there are artists from all possible disciplines and backgrounds, which makes it interesting both for seasoned collectors as well as for first-time art buyers,’ explains show coordinator Isabel Garcia Imhof. ‘A large percentage of our public are repeat visitors who don’t miss a single show and have been coming for years, as it is a unique opportunity to buy directly from their favourite artists, discover new ones, and see quite a lot of their collections at once.’ The event is free entry and open to everyone. Amongst the public there are art lovers looking for the perfect piece for their living room, professional interior designers and even parents with children, as it is also a great family day out. There is no obligation to buy, although it is easy to get tempted, as the quality is high and there are all sorts of prices – you can find greeting cards or handmade wrapping paper for a fiver, all the way to wall-size oil canvasses or life-size sculptures for a few thousand pounds.
A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO BUY DIRECTLY FROM ESTABLISHED ARTISTS AND DISCOVER NEW ONES
‘Many visitors browse the artists’ portfolios on the Wimbledon Art Studios website in advance, so they know which studios they really want to visit,’ the show coordinator says. ‘However, once they are here and realise the size of the event, and experience the festive atmosphere, most of them end up spending a good three hours to see all the artists.’ WIMBLEDON ART STUDIOS 10 Riverside Yard, London SW17 0BB 020 8947 1183; wimbledonartstudios.co.uk

hen Tatler votes somewhere ‘Best for Colour’ in its Hair Guide, you’re bound to have high expectations. But Wimbledon Village’s Lulu Blonde has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Whilst the upstairs is an airy modern hair salon with wooden floors and an enormous chandelier, downstairs is a warren of treatment rooms – Lulu Blonde also offers a comprehensive list of beauty services from manis and pedis to decadent bespoke facials. I trialled one of the blissful full body massages administered by the soothing hands of Scarlett, a firm yet relaxing treatment which instantly relieved the tension in my shoulders. Back upstairs, the colouring began. After a quick consultation with Monica, I chose a tricky chocolate colour, opting for a semi-permanent which, Monica advised me, gives you just as much gloss but without the root regrowth issue. Half an hour and a quick shape and polish later (courtesy of Scarlett and her extensive range of Essie colours), my nails are done, my blow dry is underway, and my newly cocoa-coloured locks are beginning to emerge. They’re dark yes, but there’s a golden warmth to them, which Monica’s carefully crafted curls show off perfectly. I leave feeling pampered and polished, and with a colour which just keeps getting compliments. by Georgie Lane-Godfrey Lulu Blonde, 20 Ridgway, Wimbledon Village, SW19, 020 8947 2469; lulublonde.com

White Might OUT OF THIS WORLD AS FAR AS BEAUTY LOOKS GO, you would think that ‘boho’ and ‘futuristic’ don’t exactly mix. However, Aveda’s new season make-up collection has combined the two, taking inspiration from ‘culture clash’ fashion and bold colours – think rich, earthy hues juxtaposed with paired back neutrals. It’s definitely quirky, but it works. aveda.co.uk

MAKE UP
I
have been meaning to ‘green’ my make-up kit since forever. And with a host of new launches and technologies improving formulas all the time, I am running out ooff excuses. It used to be the case that high-performance products required a plague of 'nasty' ingredients, but with an increasingly paraben-savvy market, things are starting to change. Margo Marrone, founder of The Organic Pharmacy, was one of the pioneers of natural make-up. She laments the fact that regular skincare and makeup may contain any or all of the following: artificial colours, artificial preservatives, artificial fragrances, aluminum, lead and petrochemicals. If you're going to start by replacing just a couple of products, she suggests: ‘Choose foundation as it covers the most area on the face, and lipstick, because you end up eating it. What we put on our skin should be free from toxins, just like what we put in our bodies.’ The Organic Glam range has been a labour of love for Margo. In an industry
obsessed with colour and pigment, to be restricted to natural colour makes their repertoire small and means occasionally compromising on range and tone. But there have been some triumphs, like their incredible mascara which took five years to develop and doesn't flake or clump at all. The Cover FX range is another big hit with clients. Although not organic, the range is free from – as they put it – the 'inflammatory five' (gluten, mineral oil, talc, fragrance and parabens). It's ideal if you suffer from skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea, though frankly it is so high-performing I would recommend it to anyone. The anti-aging primer is one of my secret weapons on shoots: it transforms tired, dry skin brilliantly. Finally, Dr Hauschka, the grand-dame of the natural and organic skincare world, has a fantastic line of makeup. But it's their skincare I reach for time and time again. Massage in their classic Rose Day Cream, followed by the Translucent Make-up for truly natural and glowing skin.

STRAIGHT TEETH IN 6 MONTHS
SIX MONTHS BRACES FROM £1,450
A FABULOUS SMILE IN MONTHS NOT YEARS!
he perfect smile is within reach! In just six months, with expert advice and the most advanced solutions available in the world of orthodontics, you could have the smile you’ve always dreamed of. Unlike traditional orthodontics, cosmetic adult braces are discreet and eminently affordable. In addition, cosmetic braces can achieve your perfect smile in most cases without invasive extractions.
T
WHY ‘I LOVE STRAIGHT TEETH’ IS DIFFERENT
There are two reasons that we offer solutions that are a cut above the rest: 1. YOUR EXPERIENCE
At I Love Straight Teeth we understand that visits to traditional dentists can be an intimidating experience, this is why we have spent a lot of time and effort in getting the ambience of our centre just right. Our modern practice is designed to make you feel comfortable and relaxed during your visit. We offer early morning, late evening and weekend appointments to fit into busy lifestyles. You can learn everything about the treatment from the comfort of your home through a series of videos, articles, blog posts and free guides explaining what six months braces are and how you can get straight teeth in months on ilovestraightteeth.co.uk.
2. YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS
We offer a range of options so there’s always one to suit your circumstances and your budget. We place our expertise at your service so that you can explore the best adult orthodontic treatment to give you the appearance you’ve always wanted. In addition to their speed, cosmetic braces offer cost-effective results – their phenomenal results might suggest extra cost, but those systems can actually be cheaper than some of the traditional treatments on offer.
THE FIRST STEP TO A PERFECT SMILE Whether you begin by asking for a copy of our free guide to straight teeth in six months (text STRAIGHT to 44 238 00 00 460) or want to find out if you are suitable for one of our ground-breaking treatments (via a free consultation at our Putney practice by calling 020 3322 812) the route to straighter teeth, a healthy smile and glowing confidence is simple. We look forward to hearing from you, and starting you on the road to the smile of your dreams.

THE PRIMROSE
T
he Primroses have started to bloom, lighting up mossy banks and verges all over the country!
I absolutely love the primrose Primula
vulgaris, a pale yellow scented bloom that appears from rosettes of mid green leaves. It's such a quintessentially English native wildflower. If you are patient you can establish primroses in your garden from seed, however I tend to buy established plants or plugs. As they are hedgerow plants they grow well in dappled shade under trees or shrubs and thrive in moist, wet soil. In summer, mulch around the plants to keep them cool and the soil moist. YOU WILL NEED • 3 glass fishbowls (1 large, 1 medium, 1 small) • 3 stems of large white Phalaenopsis Orchids (Moth Orchids) • 2 bundles of steel grass • 1 pair of secateurs All these can be bought at New Covent Garden Market, SW8. Allow £15-£20 for the flowers.
1 Start by washing your fish
bowls and half filling them with water using a watering can. Beware the perils of filling up a pristine fish bowl with a watering can that’s been left outside for a while! You may want to rinse yours out first.
2 Divide up the steel grass and select around eight blades, setting the rest aside for later. Feed into the largest fishbowl end first so that the blades curve around the edge of the bowl. Be careful: steel grass can be sharp if you run your fingers along it the wrong way and can cut much like a papercut.
3 Once the steel grass is in the bowl, carefully separate the blades and angle them so that they run at an angle around the glass.
4 Take one of your orchid stems and trim it with secateurs so that it fits inside the largest bowl. It’s best to trim the flowers a little at a time so that you can measure them as you go. You can always cut more, but you can’t stick flowers back on!
5 Gently bend the stem to fit inside the bowl, placing the trimmed stem in first. Arrange the flowers so that they run around the glass of the bowl above the steel grass.
6 Select a second stem of orchids. Measure, trim and place it in the middle of the fishbowl stem first so that the flowers drape out over the edge of the bowl.
7 For the medium bowl, take 4-5 blades of steel grass and feed them into the bowl as before with the larger one. Separate and angle the blades with your fingers. Next, take another stem of orchids, measure and trim it to an appropriate length and then place in the bowl stem first, draping the flowers out over the edge as before.
8 For the smallest bowl, trim off some of the leftover orchid flowers from the discarded stems and gently press into the fishbowl with your fingers, being careful so as not to submerge the petals.
9 Place the three bowls next to each other in a triangular shape (see opposite page) to create this simple yet elegant arrangement. Next time, why not try using orange zantedeschia (calla lilies) instead for a dash of colour?

aving grown up amongst the wild orchids of his native Zimbabwe, Robbie moved to London at the age of 23 where he began his career in floristry. In 2001 Robbie established his eponymous floristry company, soon becoming one of London’s hottest talents. Working with brands such as Chloé, Lancôme, Vivienne Westwood, Hermès, Dior, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, it came as no surprise when in 2011, Robbie was voted Tatler’s ‘Superstar Florist of the Year’. Then in 2012, Robbie was invited to create a piece for Fabergé’s Big Egg Hunt in support of Action for Children. The result was an extraordinary egg made from beautiful, preserved water lilies, or Nymphéas, which was suspended in Lanvin’s London store on Mount Street. Today, Robbie works as a designer, artist, teacher and writer, catering for both private and fashion clients alongside his highly skilled team. F
orget the village fête. When it comes to raising money, charities across the country are abandoning the tombola and coconut shy in favour of asking locals to open their gardens and raise a few pounds for a good cause. One such project is The National Gardens Scheme (NGS), which raises funds for nursing and caring charities every year. Founded by the Queen's Nursing Institute in 1927, the NGS has established itself as one of the most significant charitable funders of this sector, donating over £43 million to nominated beneficiaries since its foundation. Many NGS gardens are small back gardens that have been made special by hard work, skill and the love of gardening. My own garden for example is very small, making the most of available space in a Victorian terrace – a blaze of colour throughout with structural and annual planting that peaks in early summer. Espalier apple trees reach into a planting space that generates an exquisite effect. Gardens don’t need to be large or elaborate to be enjoyable and interesting for visitors. If it’s
Gardens don’t have to be large or elaborate to be enjoyable and interesting for visitors.
attractive or has bags of character, it could well be a contender for the NGS. All you need to do is keep it well-maintained and be happy to talk about it. Visitors are often keen gardeners themselves and usually ask a lot of questions. ‘I’ve had visitors identify mystery plants for me, tell me what was shredding my Golden Hop and suggest plants and combinations that would work well – and in most cases, they were right!’ says Steve Bustin, a long-time opener on the scheme. When I chose my house, I also chose the garden – south facing, not too big, and good soil. I took a deep
breath and spent money on getting the structure right with the aid of Stephen Smith, my garden designer. It was important to do this early on as there is no access to the garden other than through the house, so all the heavy stuff had to come through before the inside finishes were completed. To me, the garden is just as important as the other rooms that guests might use, so it’s just as much of an investment. And to be outside surrounded by the birds singing makes even the weeding a joy – though I'm not as enthusiastic when I’m done. Gardens aren’t just pleasant places to be, they have a vital environmental role. In the floods earlier this year, we were reminded that we all have a responsibility to care for the land, and that people who have paved over their front and back gardens cause a great deal of problems for their communities as the rainfall simply overwhelmed the sewer systems. We should be cherishing these spaces, both large and small – it breaks my heart when I see people using their front gardens as rubbish tips (not too often in Balham, I’m pleased to say). I’m told that my garden is the smallest open to the public in the scheme, possibly in the country, so I was delighted to achieve the standard. When I fly over London, especially south London where we have lots of low-rise housing and parkland, gardens really give the city its character. To my mind, they are what make England truly English – lets make the most of what we have. Jonathan’s garden is open on Sunday 29th June from 1pm; ngs.org.uk

after last but not least:
THE GARDEN he first and the last things to do to the house are the garden. At 8am on the day our builder, Nick Jepp, started, the jungle was on its way out of the front door and now that we are in, it is time to turn our attention back to the garden. I meet a few local companies that are recommended, explaining the budget isn’t huge and that we have saved the best until last... Most give me that knowing look that says ‘we’ve heard that before’. Unsure who to go for (the guy who told me he’d first of all send me a quote for drawings is out) I meet a guy called Lwin Brittain Millar in Farrow & Ball on the Northcote Road who chips in whilst I’m deliberating over front door colour. His advice is helpful, I like him and he happens to be a gardener who grew up in Balham. So we meet and I explain that I’m looking to create a low maintenance garden (ie nothing I have to keep alive) that my children can play in and that in the summer months is an
T
extension of my inside space. With children we’d love grass, but then the upkeep… So he tells me artificial is the way to go, which means no persuading grass to grow. We agree on raising the height so it’s level with the kitchen floor and on a decent area of patio for a table and chairs too. Lwin suggests a few raised beds, artistically placed to break up the space, and some simple box planting that even I can manage to water and trim once in a while. Lwin and his charming team arrive on a wet November day and there in sets the theme. They battle on despite the elements and without even a hint of disruption to my sparkly new home. Shoes are off inside at all times, my curtains are as pristine when they finish as when they started and they are such gentlemen to have around that my three year old asks if they ‘can stay forever and ever’. The attention to detail is second to none and despite the wettest winter on record, the paint eventually dries, the lights go in and my lovely little garden is done. And so, I’m happy to say, are we.

alk through Battersea Park and you are bound to notice a hive of activity just south of the river. Move closer and you will be met with the sounds of a typical garden: the shovelling of soil, the raking of earth. But this is not your typical garden. And these are not your typical gardeners – they are the gardeners of Thrive, an initiative with the aim of transforming the common practise of gardening into a life-changing tool for disadvantaged and vulnerable people, or those suffering from a disability or mental illness. Horticulture has long been considered therapeutic. At Thrive, the team believe the pastime can boost personal development, improve physical and psychological health, and enhance communication and living skills, as well as promoting general wellbeing. Not to mention one more crucial element: exercise. Gardening means muscle strengthening and increased mobility, accomplished via a sense of purpose and achievement. It also offers the
TIME TO
thrive
Katy Parker uncovers the horticultural project in Battersea which nurtures its gardeners as much as its gardens opportunity to socialise and connect with other individuals, many of whom are experiencing similar challenges. What’s more, the practise helps participants acquire new skills and gain qualifications, which greatly increase their chances of finding work. The training programmes Thrive offers can lead to a certificate in work-based
horticulture, or a level two qualification in the same subject – the equivalent of an A-C GCSE grade. ‘We help [our gardeners] harness the health benefits of gardening, and then move them towards training for a qualification in horticulture,’ explains Thrive CEO Kathryn Rossiter. ‘Ultimately our vision is to help them

HOUSE & GARDEN
We help [our gardeners] harness the health benefits of gardening
move on in their lives, either in a volunteering capacity or to gain employment.’ Yet the programme isn’t exclusive. Professionals seeking a change in career can reap rewards from the charity too, for Thrive provide a number of educational opportunities, ranging from one-day courses to higher education. Known formally as ‘Social and Therapeutic Horticulture’, the process has been proven to positively impact the lives of those who experience it. Take Surreyborn Tom Watson, for example. He suffered horrific head injuries in a car accident when he was just 18 years old. After a long rehabilitation period, he was left with a hole in his skull, epilepsy and limited use of one arm. His days as a wakeboarding champion were over and his future looked desolate. But Thrive has revolutionised Tom’s life. He came to work with the project at The Herb Garden in Battersea Park, acquired all
manner of new skills, and now lives in Denmark with his girlfriend where he manages a Cable Wakeboard Centre. ‘Thrive took a frail and damaged young man, nurtured and green-housed him to enable him to grow and blossom into a remarkable, kind, funny and sensitive [person],’ says Lynne, Tom’s mother. ‘[They] certainly disproved the psychologist at the neuro rehab unit who said he would never work, plan, problem solve or be independent.’ A nationwide project, Thrive also has a presence in Birmingham and Gateshead, but it is the Battersea Park base which is currently in the spotlight. The gardens here are comprised of several areas, including a Herb Garden, and the Old English Garden which has been designed by the award-winning Sarah Price. Price’s collaboration with Thrive started when she won the 2008 competition to design a new main garden for the project. She has since moved onto a string of career-defining achievements, including a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and involvement in the construction of the gardens at Olympic Park. Price’s new area at Battersea Park will be planted by Thrive gardeners, who are set to embark on the project later this year. The plans promise a ‘grow, cook and eat area’, including a nursery with shallow salad tables and customised potting area to facilitate easy compost mixing and potting for those gardeners suffering physical disabilities. Alongside this, there will be a plant ‘shop’ to raise money for the charity and enable gardeners to develop their social skills through interaction with the plant-buying public. There will be a fully accessible woodland walk and nature trail too, in addition to more aesthetic, fanciful features such as jungle-esque plants, bulb patterns (which mark the seasons) and a mown pathway lined with wild flowers. At the centre of this is the new building, which recently opened along East Carriage Way in Battersea Park and replaces the portable structures used by the charity previously. This centre provides a comfortable and relaxing refuge for gardeners, volunteers and staff alike. ‘This will be a flagship building for us on East Carriage Drive,’ says Rossiter, ‘which will also allow us to increase the number and variety of plants and herbs we can use and sell to members of the public.’ The public here are crucial, for local support has been intrinsic to Thrive’s success, providing not only funding and volunteers, but backing from the council as well. ‘Thrive have helped thousands of people with disabilities over the years,’ says Councillor Jonathon Cook, the council’s cabinet member for environment and culture. ‘Long may it continue.’ For further information on Thrive, to get involved with the project or to show your support for this worthy cause, visit thrive.org.uk

BOUTIQUE DESIGN ABSOLUTELY CATCHES UP WITH Sebastian Mann OF DESIGN AGENCY Minale + Mann
In a nutshell, how would you describe Minale & Mann? We are an award-winning boutique design agency, housing a unique blend of architects, interior designers, product and furniture designers, and bespoke construction teams. Positioned alongside our London design studio we have a workshop, where we fabricate handmade furniture and design products. Born out of a desire to create beautiful architecture and interiors in a streamlined fashion, we turned our back on traditional design methods and rewrote the rules, becoming the first architecture and construction company in London. Our forte is creating unique high-end residential and boutique commercial spaces in London, Stockholm and New York, for a discerning clientele. Minale & Mann provide quite a variety of services, would you say it is quite niche? What makes you different to your competitors? Yes. We are the first and only company doing what we do in London. We are able to offer a unique set of services all under one roof, taking a project from inception to

completion, delivering a premier design product, be it architecture, interior design or a design. What would you say is your design ethos? Out style is an eclectic mix of rough and smooth, a ‘refined industrial’ look with a handmade feel, set within an urban backdrop. When it comes to design, we are anti-trends and feel more comfortable going against the grain. Did you always want to set up your own business? Yes. When you run your own company, there is no ceiling to what you can achieve.
WE TURNED OUR BACK ON TRADITIONAL DESIGN METHODS AND REWROTE THE RULES
What kind of clients do you work with? Would you say it is quite an equal mix of residential and commercial? Our clients are from all over the globe: from high-flying movie producers to young families, to boutique businesses, clubs and bars.
I would say that we are more well known for our residential work in London, as it is easier to get a name for yourself within that market. Outside of London, we have an equal mix of commercial, hospitality and residential projects. Which London-based businesses/ suppliers do you use regularly? Many. To name a few: Buster + Punch, Nelly Duff, James Ltd, Davey Lighting, Inspired Dwellings, Miles & Wilde, Little Green. London has a wealth of famous architecture. Do you have a personal favourite building? Definitely Battersea Power Station. What are the current trends in the architecture/design industry? There are always trends, and of
course we refer to them, but we rather fashion ourselves than follow any particular fad, or trend. What projects are you working on at the moment? There are a few, but I will mention our most recent: we have been appointed to deliver a fabulous and exclusive residential project in St John’s Wood, where we will be fusing bronze and dark aesthetics, carving clean lines and running a ‘light touch’ industrial vibe throughout. There will be a range of bespoke architectural and interior design features, feature lighting, and we will be creating a large basement with light wells that spring out of the ground into an elegant landscaped pavilion garden. minaleandmann.com

Discover the ARTICHOKE’S complex flavours It’s Artichoke Week at Putney’s Enoteca Turi Restaurant from 28th April - 3rd May with a special dinner menu celebrating the artichoke season which is at its height, in addition to the usual a la carte menu n Italy people are accustomed to eating many different varieties of artichoke which appear seasonally in Italian cooking across the regions: the romano from Lazio or the violetto from Puglia. In the UK, however, the artichoke is under-rated and under-used, an awkward vegetable, requiring much time and hard work to prepare at home. Yet most of us have also experienced the disappointment of tinned or bottled artichokes when eating out, sometimes bitter and metallic or, worst of all, bland.
I
The less well known spinoso artichoke from Sardinia is closely related to its wild thistle cousin and renowned for having the best flavour of the family, but is prickly and tricky to prepare. Trust the passion and expertise of Giuseppe at Enoteca Turi and discover an unexpected sweetness and delicacy of flavour. CRAZY FOR CRESS Restaurant Review
RIVER QUARTER KITCHEN
Lara Mason takes a stroll along the Thames to Battersea’s best riverside restaurant
N
ext time you walk along the river in Battersea, keep your eyes peeled for River Quarter Kitchen. A bit of a hidden gem, this restaurant is the kind of place which feels warm and welcoming as soon as you walk in. You’ll find it packed with groups of friends and young families, all out to enjoy the fresh, wholesome food and reasonable prices, set against the backdrop of the Thames. We started with the crisp calamari – lightly battered, wonderfully fresh and served with a moreish dip of homemade sweet chilli sauce. This is meant to be a sharing dish, but unfortunately it’s not easy to share. We raced through them, battling to out-eat each other as quickly as possible and get the lion’s share. Luckily we’d also ordered the breaded oven baked prawns with a creamy marina sauce, which ended up being just as delicious. Onto the mains and a pumpkin ravioli proved the star of the show. Served simply with sage butter and roasted almonds, the nuts added the necessary crunch to the soft, sweet pumpkin filling. It was scrumptiously engrossing, and my
companion’s salmon with crushed new potatoes and broccoli purée was equally tasty, or at least so I gather, since he wouldn’t let me try any and didn’t say anything except ‘mmmm’ for the whole time he was eating. We washed it all down with a bottle of the 2012 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Vigneto di Gino from Le Marche, a delectable white with notes of sweet melon, peaches and apricots. Mmmm indeed! By the time desserts came round, we knew we’d overdone it, but the special that day of white chocolate cheesecake proved too tempting to refuse. We talked ourselves into sharing it, regretting our decision the instant we tasted it. Light, creamy and with a real chocolately punch, I’d come back again for that dessert alone. Much like its sister cafés across the river (Chelsea Quarter Café and Heal’s Café) the River Quarter Kitchen is warm and friendly, with no hint of pretentiousness. Instead, there’s just high-end, low-priced food and, of course, a view to die for. River Quarter Kitchen, Molasses House, Plantation Wharf, SW11, 020 7978 5055; riverquarterkitchen.com
In celebration of National Watercress Week this month (18th-24th May), we’ve chosen one of our favourite simple summer recipes using this super leaf Sea bass with watercress salsa Prep time 5 mins Cook time 6-8 mins SERVES 2 4 small sea bass fillets A little oil for brushing For the salsa • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped • 1 tbsp capers, drained • 2 spring onions, trimmed • 1 x 85g bag watercress • 2 tbsp olive oil • Juice of half a lemon • Salt and freshly ground black pepper TO SERVE
New potatoes & watercress
1
Brush the fish fillets on both sides with a little oil and season to taste. Place skin side down on a foil lined grill rack and cook under a hot grill for 6-8 mins or until cooked through.
2
Meanwhile, place all the salsa ingredients together in a food processor and whizz on the pulse setting until a smooth sauce has formed. Season to taste and spoon into a serving bowl.
3
To serve, take four plates, arrange a little watercress on each and place the fish on top. Spoon the salsa over the fish and serve with new potatoes.

WATER MEADOW COTTAGE Blenheim Palace Estate WORDS: GEORGIE LANE-GODFREY
T H E C O T TA G E It might be a quintessential Cotswolds cottage from the outside, but push open the heavy oak door of the traditional stone portico and you’ll find more of a boutique London hotel than a cosy country pad. The sitting room’s plush Victoriana-inspired interiors are decadently off-beat – think twinkling chandeliers in rusted birdcages – while the dining room’s huge wooden table is perfect for long brunches with the Sunday papers. Upstairs, you’ll find a beamceiling bathroom, complete with cast iron roll top bath, and two boudoir-style bedrooms decked out in elegant chinoiserie wallpaper, crystal chandeliers and sumptuous monogrammed linens – the kind of rooms that were made for luxuriant lie-ins.
THE EXTRAS
T H E L O C AT I O N Perched on the banks of the River Evenlode at the end of a quiet tree-lined country lane, Water Meadow Cottage’s location could not be more idyllic. A picturesque former hunting lodge dating back to the 18th-century, the cottage sits guarding the gates to the historic Blenheim Palace Estate – home to the Duke of Marlborough, birthplace to Sir Winston Churchill and one of England’s most spectacular stately homes. A visit to this World Heritage Site is a must, even if it’s just for a stroll along the river in the beautiful grounds. Further afield, the ‘city of dreaming spires’ that is Oxford lies just 15 minutes to the south, as does the designer outlet centre Bicester Village, providing high end retail therapy. Personal shoppers and chauffeur-driven transfers available on request,
Those not so keen on self-catering needn’t worry – Water Meadow Cottage has its own impressive seasonal menu from which gourmet dishes can be selected and delivered fresh to your door. They also provide guests with all the basic essentials upon arrival and there’s an extensive honesty larder for everything else, so you’re spared the usual trek to the shops after you’ve unpacked. Meanwhile, those looking for some R&R will love the massages available on demand in the stylish summerhouse – the lovely Daniel will commute down from London to soothe away your stress with a relaxing holistic massage; all you need do is commute across the pretty cottage garden. Dinner reservations, local recommendations – everything really is taken care of, making this cottage the perfect country retreat for those still wanting the comforts and conveniences of
urban life.

erched on the Bosphorous strait, occupying a spot on the European side flanked by the Dolmabahçe Palace and the Naval Museum, the Shangri-La Hotel overlooks a panoply of mosques, minarets and rolling hills on the Asian shore. It's an impressive view, and one which is undoubtedly worth paying for. I stayed in one of the Deluxe Bosphorus rooms overlooking the river – luxurious without being cloying or overdone, the pale carpets, high ceilings and enormous window gave it a wonderfully airy feel. Next door, a dramatic ensuite black marble bathroom offered a bath big enough to swim in, an almost unreasonably spacious
shower and a loo with its own phone. These, however, were all upstaged by my discovery of the television concealed in the mirror. Granted, I was unable to make it play anything other than The National Geographic channel in Turkish, but that hardly seemed to matter. The hotel feels opulent and impressive, boasting two restaurants, a decadent spa and health centre and some staggeringly grand conference and banquet facilities located down the magnificent staircase, which spirals around the three storey chandelier.
I
W H E R E T O E AT n an odd twist of fate, I managed to come all the way to Turkey and end up eating some of the best Chinese food I’d ever had. Every Shangri-La Hotel has a Shang Palace restaurant, and this
one is sophisticated and seductive, filled with initimate wooden lattice dividing up the curving booths. The food was an exquisite traditional Cantonese fare – the duck, served as just the skin, then in a pancake and finally in noodle form was flawless, crispy and succulent in equal measure. For top notch traditional Turkish food however, the Köşebaşı Restaurant in the Nişantaşı region of Istanbul was the clear winner. The superior hummus, which bore only a passing similarity to any found in the UK, was gone almost as soon as it was put on the table. Their signature Tarsusi kebab, marinated with Turkish spices to give just the right amount of kick, also stood out. Köşebaşı has been consistently rated as one of the world’s best restaurants by Condé Nast Traveller and Zagat, but it was refreshing to find a restaurant which really did live up to the hype. For an evening meal with the potential for dancing and drinking, 360 in Taksim is your best bet, although its panoramic view of the city and slightly gimmicky live entertainment do tend to attract a more touristy crowd.

WHERE TO SHOP stanbul is home to The Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. The Bazaar attracts between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily and has over 3,000 shops on 61 streets, meaning that it is impossible to do anything more than scratch the surface in an afternoon. The main drag is dominated by souvenir shops and jewellers and despite stores being grouped together according to type, I find it baffling, crowded and altogether overwhelming to the extent that I emerge blinking in the sudden sunlight having only purchased a few evil eye nik naks. No less voracious is the fabled Spice Market where I am proposed to several times (the Turkish style of selling takes a bit of acclimatisation). But the Spice Market is something to behold and the riotous colours and echoing catcalls seem to capture more of the vitality of Istanbul than the Grand Bazaar. Both are admittedly massive tourist traps but are worth seeing, even if only briefly. However, serious shoppers looking for designer tags will find them in one place: Nişantaşı. This is Istanbul’s answer to Bond Street and is peppered with elegant cafés and expensively dressed pedestrians, showcasing the more European side of Istanbul's diverse culture.

Christian stronghold for hundreds of years, the Ottoman invasion in 1453 transformed the city into a centre of Islam, a change represented in architectural form by the Hagia Sophia. Initially a church and later a mosque, it no longer belongs to any denomination and instead serves as a museum as appointed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, first Turkish President and founder of the Turkish Republic. The inside has a hallowed atmosphere, with enormous hanging discs inscribed with the names of Allah and Muhammad, accompanyed by mosaics of familiar Biblical characters like Mary and Jesus. This historical behemoth is located a stone’s throw from another unmissable Istanbul landmark, the Blue Mosque. A breathtaking structure – the domes and minarets seem to multiply as you look on, the white of the stones gleaming in the sunshine. Be prepared to queue though – the long line to enter isn't for the faint hearted.
A
DON’T MISS... Turkish Hammam. A traditional cleansing treatment, I tried one at the CHI Spa in the Shangri-La Hotel. Conducted in a white marble chamber lined with basins, the treatment involves lying on a slab in the centre of the room as a jug of warm water is poured over you. This is then followed by a rather vigorous rubbing down, being covered by warm foam and then repeating, with the added bonus of a hair wash when you're on your back. It really does leave you feeling exceptionally clean, and afterwards my hair had never been shinier and my skin was silky smooth for days. Quite possibly the most enjoyable way to sample authentic Istanbul.

FOOD & TRAVEL When you think of the UAE, the mind tends to automatically picture the ostentatious glamour of Dubai, but Abu Dhabi (which is actually the capital Emirate) is hot on its glittering neighbour’s heels. Unlike the colourful, exotic souks and bazaars depicted in the second Sex and the City movie, which was set in Abu Dhabi but filmed entirely in Morocco (though I suppose this particular gaffe is the least of the film’s problems), the city is an amalgamation of clean, highly modern structures and barren desert. Absolutely everything is pristine; from the expansive roads to the architecture, the impeccablydressed residents and their cars – which seem to only be available in white, silver or black. Even the sky itself is permanently devoid of unsightly clouds. We stayed at the glamorous Rotana hotels and our first stop-off was at the man-made Yas Island, home to the famous

escending blearyeyed into Abu Dhabi international airport at 1am, the pilot, in a jovial manner, informed us of our punctual arrival and that the weather outside was an eyebrow raising 31°C. Had I misheard? From the spectacular luxury of Etihad Airline’s pod-like seats in Pearl Business Class, everything was plush, cool and perfectly tranquil. As we swiftly made our way from the baggage reclaim area to a fleet of white taxis awaiting us, however, it transpired that the pilot had not, in fact, been exaggerating.
Formula One racing circuit. There are plenty of uniquely UAE excursions to enjoy: shopping in enormous malls, eating out at world-class restaurants, dune buggy experiences, watersports, desert safaris. There’s also a blossoming culture scene, with the intriguing (and controversial) Louvre Abu Dhabi – dubbed ‘the desert Louvre’ – due to open next year on nearby Saadiyat Island, along with the world’s largest Guggenheim and a performing arts centre designed by Zaha Hadid. However, our first taste of Abu Dhabi was of its slightly less cultural attractions. After a speedy visit (and dip) in the newlycompleted Yas Waterworld waterpark, we popped into Ferrari World, an enormous museum-cum-theme park which is conveniently (for adrenaline junkies) situated next door to the Formula One racing circuit. The sweeping, tent-like roof in trademark Ferrari red is practically a landmark of Yas Island, and car lovers will feel like they’ve died and gone to heaven. If you feel so inclined you can take a ride on the world’s fastest rollercoaster here – the Formula Rossa – which reaches speeds of 120mph in just six seconds.

For less high-octane experiences though, try the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the world’s largest and most expensive mosques (they do nothing by halves here) the building is a breathtaking feat of architecture; imposing, snow white and, as with the rest of Abu Dhabi, immaculate. Despite being cloaked beneath a billowing abaya – as a woman, you are transformed into a concealed, floating pillar of black so as to abide by the mosque’s strict dress code – the atmosphere is relaxed, warm and welcoming. This reflects the current attitude of Abu Dhabi; one of underlying and unwavering tradition, but with a thoroughly modern perspective that embraces Western interests.
This is partly due to the fact that the UAE is a booming business epicentre, with a bourgeoning media hub and an influx of expats. The ‘locals’ that I encountered were all from various backgrounds – India, Egypt, Algeria, Britain – and all described life in Abu Dhabi as a completely unique experience. Nightlife is increasingly popular in Abu Dhabi though kept relatively low-key and tucked away inside hotel bars and clubs. After a stunning Indian feast at Rangoli restaurant in Yas Island Rotana, we were whisked into town to a sister hotel to experience Abu Dhabi’s only Bavarian
bar. Bustling and smoke-filled, I ordered a Mojito (I’m no beer fan, much to the group’s dismay) and marvelled at the scenario. After all, there I sat quaffing a Spanish cocktail in a German-themed bar in the heart of the UAE. How’s that for multiculturalism? No sooner had we settled back into Abu Dhabi than we were packed away into the white taxis again and driven bright and early to Fujairah – roughly a three hour drive to the east. The extreme contrasts between old and new is rarely more apparent than when witnessing them as a passenger. Huge, modern buildings give way to acres of desert, and I never did grow tired of the sight of wild camels. We were put up in another Rotana hotel, the 5-star Al Aqah Beach Resort & Spa. With sandy beaches, inviting pools at every turn, colonial style rooms, cocktail bars and that intense, wonderful heat, it’s no surprise that cultural excursions are low on the agenda here. Another attraction of Fujairah is its unique location, as it borders the Indian Ocean instead of the Arabian Gulf, making it a haven for divers. We took a short boat trip to Snoopy Island (named after the Peanuts character as it resembles the lazy canine’s reclining silhouette) and went for a snorkel under the guidance of Frank, a mellow, nomadic diving instructor from Germany, who provided us with beers and sodas straight from the cool box after our dip. All holidays have one lasting crystalline moment that you take home with you. As I watched the sun begin its descent behind the looming Hajar mountains, the call to prayer suddenly began, like an ethereal choir formed from the mountains themselves. Cold drink in hand, refreshed from the swim with that beautiful sound reverberating through the air I had a moment of clarity: it was this moment.

EDUCATION
NEW Model COOL
An innovative secondary in southeast London is fast becoming one of the leading models for the free school movement, reports Amanda Constance ILLUSTRATION BY PHIL COUZENS
t’s ‘one of the country’s most impressive and forwardthinking free schools’, according to Rachel Wolf, Director of the New Schools Network. Lord Adonis, the former schools minister says: ‘The teachers and staff are passionate about the importance of education, and they combine their passion with great professionalism and skill.’ The Evening Standard has cited it as one of London’s top five ‘new model’ schools with its ‘relentless focus on standards’. On Ofsted’s Parent View website, 100% of responding parents said they would recommend the school to others. So what is so great about Greenwich Free School? ‘The teachers here are all massive geeks,’ says Sarah Jones, current acting head of the school and one of its co-founders. ‘They are fantastically hard working, they love their subject and they pass that excitement about learning on to the children.’ Jones also says that because GFS is a free school, ‘we can go above and beyond the national curriculum’. This means educational school trips every fortnight and a teaching syllabus that can stray into areas left untouched by other schools. ‘We’re doing Philosophy at the moment,
i
GREENWICH FREE SCHOOL HAS A TOUGH ‘HIGH EXPECTATIONS, NO EXCUSES, NO SHORTCUTS’ ETHOS discussing Utilitarianism!’ Jones declares with unqualified glee. Since opening its doors in September 2012, GFS has been different. Firstly, it is much smaller than the average inner-city secondary school. When it reaches full capacity by 2018 there will be 700 pupils (including 200 in the sixth from); other locals schools average 1140 pupils. With only 25 pupils in a class and only 100 pupils per year, teachers can really get to know – and spend time with – the pupils and vice versa. Secondly, there is also a tough ‘high expectations, no excuses, no shortcuts’ ethos that applies to children and staff. Pupils are banned from bringing their mobile phones into school, uniform is smart and behaviour strictly policed.
The school also operates on an extended day. School starts at 8am and finishes at 5.30pm. The last hour of the day of the day is spent on ‘enrichment’ activities such as debating, Latin or sport; the school claims its pupils will spend a third more time learning than most children. Academically, the school follows a rigorous ‘depth before breadth’ curriculum giving pupils more time to master the fundamentals of Maths, English and Science. And as well as classic ‘academic’ subjects such as Latin, pupils from Year 7 have lessons in PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and ICT is replaced by ‘Computer Science and Enterprise’, teaching pupils to master commercially valuable technical skills. It couldn’t be more up Michael Gove’s street. Which isn’t surprising as GFS was the brainchild of the right-leaning think tank Policy Exchange, which itself was cofounded by Michael Gove to do this very sort of thing. Jonathan Simons, current Head of Education at Policy Exchange and now Chair of Governors at GFS was one of the schools co-founders. Sarah Jones said the idea for the school came to her after going through the Teach First programme (a Labour government initiative which saw top graduates recruited to teach in challenging schools) and teaching in Greenwich for all of her career. She loved the area, ‘but I had become frustrated by aspects of the education system – like not being able to take children out on an educational field trip and not having enough time in the day on any given subject for pupils who were struggling.’ One of the key things for her was the extended day: ‘We wanted to look at longer days for academic and non-academic reasons’. Learning for the joy of learning seems to be fundamental to the GFS ethos. As Jones says: ‘We care about more than just exams. Every lesson should be exciting, challenging and different.’ It’s not all been plain sailing. The muchlauded founding head, Lee Faith, left the school in December after just a couple of years ‘to pursue other things’. Jones insists it’s not been a problem as ‘the team here is very strong’ but it must have been disruptive at best. A new head, Oliver Knight, has been appointed and will start at Easter. The school is obviously doing something right. It’s already very oversubscribed, and not just by pupils. ‘We have been very lucky with recruitment,’ says Jones. ‘Teachers want to work here because it is different and because our kids are so great.’ But how do you get great kids? ‘By having great teaching,’ she laughs. greenwichfreeschool.co.uk

IN THEIR OWN
WORDS NIGEL BUDD & RICHARD MARSH Sales Director and Senior Sales Manager at Lauristons Photography: Kiti Swannell
W
e teamed up in 1998 and have loved watching our team grow during these 16 years; Lauristons now have five branches across south London, with a total of 35 staff across our two Wimbledon offices. We find it incredible that Lauristons has now reached its twentieth year and are so happy we’ve been here to see our team and the business evolve and be able to celebrate this milestone anniversary. Only three people have run this office during these twenty years, and we are all still active in the business, which I think is the reason why we have been so successful – not many can boast such longevity in a partnership! Of course, as Sales Director and Senior Sales Manager we naturally believe in a bit of healthy competition. Both of us claim to have sold more than the other in town, but perhaps need a few more before we have sold every property in Wimbledon... When we look back to our first years in the office it’s crazy how much it has changed. We didn’t have computers in the office in those days, and we had to stick black and white screen dot images on our sales particulars every morning before the office opened, that was the height of technology available then - no internet, no VOIP or emails, we just rang people. It certainly is different now! One of the most enjoyable aspects of working in estate agency is developing and maintaining relationships with clients. We have moved a number of
families 3 or 4 times over the last 16 years, and the record is 7 times so far. It’s always interesting to see what they have done in putting their own stamp on the décor and feel of the place and more so when they have done extensive refurbishment or some large extensions. One great thing about the area is that people really put roots down here, just as we have. It’s usual for families to take advantage of the great schools such as Kings College for the elder children and The Study Preparatory for little ones, as well as all the parks and lovely properties on offer. Although it is probably more unusual for us as estate agents to have been here so long! But we believe it’s testament to the fact that we love it here. We don’t know of anyone else that has worked in Wimbledon for anywhere near as long, but we simply have never wanted to move on. Wimbledon has changed a lot and some of it is unrecognisable. In fact, our old office at No 49 Wimbledon Hill Road doesn’t even exist anymore and was demolished over ten years ago to make way for Melbury House. They do say our business is a people business, and many of our clients and customers definitely come back to us, as they know we are still here. We know their properties, and they take confidence in knowing that we really do have a local knowledge of the area and people that is second to none. 020 8946 9468; lauristons.com

in 1964 as an apprentice and eventually took over the business from Robinsons in 1988. He then continued to work on the site as J.R Spalding Joiners until his death in 2010. Bev said “Selling the workshop after Julians death was a very traumatic experience for me. So many memories and so much to be cleared out before the sale. However I was lucky enough to be given the details of Darren from Lauristons who made the whole transaction smooth and stress free. I was also shown empathy and understanding of how diff icult a time this was being for me.”
When visiting the site for the first time, Darren Baker, Land and New Homes Director, immediately recognised the potential for redeveloping this historic building into a new family home, whilst retaining as much of the character as possible. The building had started life as stables serving the residents who predominantly worked in the coconut mill producing fibre matting. In the 1940’s the building was transformed into a joinery from which work was carried out Westminster Abbey, Guildford and St David’s cathedrals.
The new home is nearly finished and should be released for sale as we enter Spring. We look forward to inviting Bev to return and see for herself what a wonderful building that has meant so much to her over the years, has become.
Bev’s partner Julian began working at the joinery

TIPS
• To avoid messy paint cans, place a rubber band around an open paint can to wipe your brush on.
• Use a comb to hold small or short nails steady when hammering in – prevents many a sore thumb.
• Need to fill a bucket or container that doesn’t fit in a sink? Use a clean dustpan. Hold at an angle under the taps and water will flow down the handle into your bucket.
• Use old funnels attached to the wall to organise string, twine and yarn.
• When drilling holes, use a folded post it note to catch the dust.
• Use a hanging shoe rack to store cleaning supplies and keep them out of harms way.

Most satisfying transaction I’ve had... A buyer tried to gazunder a client of ours and we advised our client to sit tight as we felt we could achieve more, which we did by over 10% and within one week, setting a record price in the process.
I never thought I’d see... The aforementioned client cooking their breakfast whilst in the bath on a viewing one Saturday morning. To my clients dismay the buyers were put off the property, and probably sausages for a while too...
Most interesting property I’ve been involved with ... A former Victorian Bakery converted into six incredible and huge lateral apartments.

The property I’d most like on our books is... Honestly, there are too many to choose from! However, one we’re lucky enough to currently have on our books has arguably some of the best views in London overlooking Albert Bridge, Battersea Park, Battersea Power Station and beyond. Most unusual interior... I’ve seen a few as you can imagine, but one particular house stands out from the rest mainly because of the bath in the middle of the kitchen. The vendor felt it was a selling point as they could cook their Sunday morning fry-up whilst having a bath. I’m pretty sure the new owner has made a few modifications.

nintended consequences - life is full of them and the recent sea change Budget is no different. Playing with pensions has been a favourite pastime for Chancellors over many parliaments and, ignoring the politics, a confusing subject for most mortals continuing to confound and confuse in equal measure. However, this Chancellor, again ignoring political polemic, has sought to clear a path through the miasma of bumf by giving those aged 55 and over a simple option, take your money, pay the tax and do what you want with it. Whilst this makes a lot of sense, i.e. not handing a suit in the City your pension pot and getting an income based on how well those same suits have been doing, it does seem likely though, that with property’s apparent popularity those same pension pot holders could well be handing their cash to estate agents. This is the biggest change I’ve seen in my working career and leads to an obvious conclusion and unintended consequence. If this starts happening in earnest, is the Government really going to let people hand their pension pot to any old agent without taking steps to make sure they’re reputable and responsible? Given property’s high profile and the obvious benefits of being able to pass on the capital asset producing the pension income to the next generation, it would seem a certainty that there’s going to be a flow away from the insurance companies that have been providing the annuities, just look at their share prices, into those that manage property related assets - agents. So with agents becoming guardians of people’s pensions, the question is who to give your pot to. Will the Government decide they want to choose who can and can’t handle this, and if they do will regulation follow? Given the importance of the asset to the individual buying it I’d suggest it should.

In the early 20th century the Magdalen Park Estate was designed as a garden suburb. The land was owned at the time by Magdalen College, Oxford, hence the name. The president of the college at the time, Sir Herbert Warren, had an architect brother, E P Warren, who was appointed to design the layout of the streets (a few of which carry the names of old Magdalen College presidents) and a significant proportion of the houses.

he area surrounding Clapham High Street remains a huge draw for first time buyers, with approximately 80% of all registrations for this area coming from those entering the market for the first time. In contrast, Clapham Old Town is blessed with some of the most beautiful family houses in London, but as these properties do not come available as often, our waiting list of potential buyers is growing week by week and the demand is reflected in the rapidly rising prices. It’s not uncommon for a property to receive multiple offers, and eventually achieve a price well in excess of the asking price. This heightened activity looks set to continue as we enter the busy summer market.

stunning example of a two double bedroom, the three storey property is located in the heart of Clapham Old Town. Spread out over 1028 square feet, this home also benefits from the space for a potential third bedroom, a 33 foot private garden, an en suite master bedroom and beautiful sash windows.
n Battersea all is rosy in the garden, or should I say Park! However, we are seeing price reductions on the property portals as many homes have been much over priced on launch, a mistake experience by a friend who asked for my frank advice on why his property had not sold within a few weeks on the ‘hot’ market. After a Council of War, I told him a substantial price reduction was needed (as it needs to be meaningful in order to have an impact) and a re-launch. He followed my advice, gave the property sufficient time on the market and lo and behold received best and final offers. The point of this is that from the outset your agent should provide you with current comparable evidence to support the proposed guide price. If your property is priced correctly on launch then one of the strongest markets seen in Battersea is here to be enjoyed.

We have found that a large number of landlords initially invested in these properties in the early 2000s, mostly as homes for their children who have since grown up and moved on or as a home for themselves but their circumstances have since changed and they need to move on. Despite this growing trend of landlords holding onto their investment, with an influx of tenants to the market, we still need more stock to meet the demand.

What happens at the end of the tenancy if my property has been damaged?
I
f your property is professionally managed, then your property manager will handle this difficult process on your behalf. If your property isn’t, then you should compare the endof-the-tenancy check-out report with the original check-in report to ascertain the damage caused during the tenancy. Once the damaged areas or items have been identified, you should obtain at least two (ideally three) quotes for remedial works, which will determine the overall costs. The proposed deduction against your tenant’s deposit should be presented to them as soon as possible and at this stage, you should be prepared to negotiate. You will need to take into account the length of tenancy as well as ‘fair wear and tear’ and as a landlord, you should avoid ‘betterment’, which is being in a better position, financially or materially at the end of the tenancy compared to the start. If negotiations with the tenant reach a stalemate, you can approach the relevant scheme with which the deposit has been registered (TDS or similar), who will arbitrate on the matter and propose a fair resolution for the amount disputed.

Why hasn’t my property sold?
T
he strength of the current market is such that not many properties sit around going unsold for very long. When valuing property I’m often told by homeowners about the disparity in the valuations they receive from Estate Agents, and this is where the problem can lie. A good local Estate Agency with experience in your area should be able to tell you what your property is worth and be able to tailor a marketing strategy that best suits your property. Combine this local knowledge with sensible pricing and an experienced sales team and your property will have every opportunity to sell at the best possible price and it shouldn’t take long at all. A strong market with rising house prices doesn’t mean that one can get away with unrealistic asking prices and the rule that remains constant in every market is to stick to sensible pricing.

ABSOLUTELY Property
Ask the Experts
Our panel of professionals give you the edge in the property market 1. Should I redecorate pre-sale?
L
ook round your house as if you are a buyer and be really critical about what you wouldn’t like to see on a viewing. Loud or bright décor often puts people off; replacing it with something neutral will allow potential buyers to more easily envisage themselves living there. De-cluttering, cleaning and making sure any maintenance issues are fixed is essential, as they could all put people off. Small changes like this will make a big difference to the impression your property leaves with buyers.
2. Where should I invest?
I
have always been a great fan of the Victorian Mansion blocks on Prince of Wales Drive, whilst the rental yields are never the highest, they are very good holders of value. We have also seen exceptional capital appreciation of close to forty percent over the last two years, which is not a bad return! Ex-local authority properties give a much better income but the capital growth is not as strong when compared to period buildings. In terms of where to invest, to my mind the Diamond Conservation (SW8) area is where I would be looking. There is nothing but good coming out of that area and its proximity to Battersea Power Station will mean that there will be plenty more to come in the future
when choosing their agent and identify the agents that suit their home and price profile the best. There is no need for six or seven valuations, and it is important to give the selected agents a proper time period to present their opinions, i.e. not a rushed half an hour slot between each agent. Don’t necessarily go for the highest priced valuation combined with the lowest fee approach, as you make come unstuck at a later date. Always make sure that a conveyancing lawyer is instructed before the property goes to market so that the contracts of sale are ready when an offer is accepted. Whenever possible, present the property as chain free, as statistically a buyer will start to switch from an agreed sale after four to six weeks unless there is a clearly defined completion date in sight.
4. When is the best time to sell?
G
one are the truly seasonal markets we used to see where once upon a time you would expect the summer holiday months and the Christmas and New Year period to be exceedingly quiet. This is no longer the case. We now have almost continuous demand across the year. The first half of the year is almost certain to show greater numbers of buyers registering to buy and if the first couple of months of the year are anything to go by, almost every property we market has a string of offers on it, invariably at or above the asking price.

6. Should I use a Financial Advisor?
A

1. Victoria Farrar
W
ith the property market as strong as it is currently, it's likely to be only two reasons that your house hasn’t sold. The first of which is price. If, for whatever reason, your property is being marketed at an unrealistic price, buyers will quickly notice this and your activity level in terms of viewings and offers will suffer as a result. Bear in mind that potential buyers now have more access than ever before to both current and historic data about property prices and they will do their homework thoroughly before they decide which properties they want to view and what level of offers they decide to make. The second reason is the way in which your property is being presented, both in the brochure and also in the website portals. Pay attention to the quality and volume of photographs that are being displayed (professional photography is essential), does your property have an accurate floor plan and an EPC? Do you have a for sale board outside your home? Does the property have an accurate and reliable description with bullet points to demonstrate the main selling features? These are all factors that can have a dramatic impact on the saleability of your home.
bsolutely. Using a financial adviser is a good idea. Much like using a good solicitor to do your conveyancing using a good financial advisor will ensure your purchase is smooth and quick from start to finish. Not only will they do the leg work on finding the best mortgage for your needs, which in the long term will save you money, but they will be a point of contact for the agent managing the sale if you are busy. Having competent professionals in place to cover all aspects of your purchase also puts you in a stronger position when making initial offers on properties.

Northcote village is the heart of ‘nappy valley’, so called for its low lying valley position nestled between two commons to the east and west, Clapham and Wandsworth, and its enormous popularity with affluent young families. A brilliant combination of outstanding primary schools, 400 acres of green spaces, fast transport links to Victoria and Waterloo and one of the cheapest council taxes in England, make this one of London’s most popular villages. Northcote Road is the heart of Northcote village and it’s lined with upmarket fashion chains, cafes, bars, more than twenty restaurants and a butcher which has been serving locals since 1889. There is a bustling vibe throughout the day and into the evening and a fruit and veg market on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday adds to the buzz. Characterised by Victorian architecture and honey coloured bricks, there are many charming, tree lined streets stretching up both valleys off the main high street.

Warren sponsor the lollipop man
I
n 2013, a representative on behalf All Saints School approached Mike Crowther, a partner at Warren Estate Agents, to see whether the company would be willing to help support the Lollipop Man, located on the junction of Felsham Road and Erpingham Road in Lower West Putney, specifically by funding the position. Jack had been a fixture for some years providing a service for local pedestrians and the pupils and parents of All Saints as well as St Mary’s and other schools in the area. Mike did not hesitate in pledging Warren’s support and was granted a special license by the Council to effect that. Warren took over the funding of the post in April 2013. Mike comments: “As the leading local Agent we share the concerns of the local community in all matters and we were delighted to lend our support to such a worthwhile and we believe necessary function – a role that ensures the
safety of local pedestrians, young and old, and indeed motorists alike.” To demonstrate Warren’s ongoing support, the Company has just agreed to renew their
commitment for 2014-2015. Jack is very happy! 020 8780 1100; warrenputney.co.uk

We’ve got our largest ever pipeline in sales, prices have risen around 20% year on year, and demand far outstrips supply. As has been widely discussed, this is all being fuelled by the global gold-rush into Central London Property rippling out across the river to the inner suburbs. For local property owners this all sounds great, but is it too good to be true? Well no, because it is true. Too good to last, well possibly? These peaks are inevitably followed by troughs – is there another trough lurking over the horizon? Is there a tipping point around the corner? Well I obviously don’t know. But I do know that prices are certainly getting a bit rich for some locals. They almost always get a mortgage on their purchases, and they have taken a step back,
drawn the children from poor families in countries including Malawi, Liberia and Haiti into school. Parents and children have filled the backpacks, kindly sponsored by Sullivan Thomas, with the everyday school items and clothes that we take for granted. In addition, the PTA held a cake sale to raise additional funds for the Mary’s Meals project. 020 8870 8441; 345nurseryschool.co.uk

as they nervously listen to Mark Carney’s pronouncements on inevitable interest rate rises, and his disregard for the London House Price Bubble. However, those cash buyers from over the seas and over the river seem to be carrying on regardless. And until global money finds another tangible safe haven it will continue to push London prices up. But there’s always a tipping point, and could this have been the government’s recent announcement that it will charge CGT on properties sold by non-residents from April 2015, and their imposition of 15% stamp duty on Ltd Co’s purchase of residential property…
attersea & Clapham are continuing to increase both in price and popularity. What was predominantly an area full of young renting professionals, has rapidly turned in to a first time buyer heaven this coupled with the young professionals who already own in the area wanting to step up the ladder into family homes, has made it one of the busiest markets in London! Trendy bars, restaurants, great transport links and not to forget the parks make these two comparable areas very attractive to an abundance of buyers. Buyers are also keen to take advantage of low interest rates right now, and recent reports show it is currently cheaper to pay for a mortgage than rent, meaning demand is driving the prices up at a rapid rate. Open days, sealed bids and sales agreed in excess of asking prices are all too common and with the prospect of interest rates going up getting ever closer, now is the time to buy or sell whilst demand is this high.
How to secure your ideal home
B
uying a property in London is currently not that easy, as buyers queue to view properties and compete to secure an offer on their ideal home. David Kirkup of aspire’s Clapham South office gives his three top tips for being the most attractive buyer: 1. Be ready to go - Make sure your house is under offer if you have a property to sell, solicitors are arranged in advance and you have a surveyor lined up and ready to go. Have your finance sorted and make sure you have written proof as you will be competing with cash buyers and purchasers with nothing to sell. 2. Be prepared for sealed bids - In a market where there is a dearth of properties for
sale, be fully prepared to go to sealed bids. Accompany your bid with a letter to the vendor highlighting why you like their property and why it would be your ideal home and consider offering a unique price, as in the end it may come down to a mere difference of a few £’s. 3. Be flexible on time - If possible, offer complete flexibility on time frames and show that you are willing to proceed quickly to exchange. Stay on top of things from the outset, from surveyors valuation to securing finance so that everything moves as quickly as possible. This not only shows you are happy to accommodate the vendor’s needs but also avoids any delays and likelihood of gazumping.
