s sad as I am to be putting away my summer dresses and swapping my Birkenstocks for boots, I must admit that I am excited for October. The cold weather and lengthening evenings mean chunky knit sweaters, mulled wine and bobble hats – not to mention cracking opening the dressing up box for Halloween. October means it is also time for our interiors special, so for anyone looking to give their home a revamp (pardon the Halloween pun), this is the issue for you. Our interiors contributor, Jessica Klingelfuss has been working overtime this month to bring you the chicest reissued furniture and home accessories around on page 76, proving that with interiors, sometimes you can’t beat a classic. If your love of interiors extends to the inside of your car, our motoring pages this month will have you hooked. Turn to page 104 for Craig Thomas’s take on our mobile ‘home away from home’. In addition to our bumper interiors section we have our usual fabulous fashion offering from Charlotte Adsett, brand new beauty buys, an interview with up and coming star Bel Powley and the lowdown on the airline making weekend jaunts to New York possible. THE QUEEN of Charity Shops

ary Portas is giving us yet another reason to go shopping this month – she’s just opened her nineteenth ‘Living & Giving’ boutique in Wimbledon Village. Having found fame and success as the creative director who transformed Harvey Nichols, Portas undoubtedly has the Midas touch. In 2010, she turned her hand to the humble charity shop and has never looked back. Working with Save the Children, Portas uses her incredibly shrewd creative eye and savvy business mind to turn humble second hand shops into a real high street contenders. With this vision, Portas has created a new breed of thrift shop, one that does more than simply provide a service like selling clothes. Instead, the Living & Giving shops revolve around the

With a detailed location strategy, new sites for the Living & Giving store are carefully considered and Wimbledon has been chosen based on the community’s needs and offering. With the new store located in the villagelike borough, one renowned for its chic shopping style, the shop will benefit from the good taste (and spending habits) of its residents. And, with queues at the launch party spilling out onto Wimbledon High Street, the new boutique certainly appears to be well placed. Welcoming shoppers with a glass of bubbly, manager Alice Whitehead proudly showed off her new shop while the Neal’s Yard beauty team gave complimentary hand massages. F rom Holland Park to

HOLLYWOOD She may have starred in only a handful of films so far but London-born actress Bel Powley is just getting started Wo r d s a b s o l u t e ly

“P

eople always assume that when you’ve broken out, it’s just instantly happened. But I’ve been doing this for 10 years. I’ve been acting since I was 13. It’s been baby steps, it wasn't like I did Benidorm and then suddenly, ‘Welcome to Hollywood’,” says Bel Powley, with a smile. Of course it’s an easy mistake to make; with her unpolished, lowmaintenance style and those giant, blue eyes Powley gives the impression of being barely out of drama school. It is this combination of naivety and a growing awareness of power that made Powley perfect for the role of Minnie Goetze in indie drama The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Set in 1970s San Francisco and based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel, The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures, the film follows the 15-year-old protagonist as she explores the awakening of her sexuality. Directed by Marielle Heller, who played Minnie herself in the stage adaptation,

the subject matter is handled in a straightforward manner and is by no means salacious. It has also been highly praised for its style, hues of Seventies yellows and browns, with cartoon animation flourishes, to add just the right amount quirk. The film is daring for several reasons: female, adolescent sex is still somewhat taboo, coupled with the fact that Minnie loses her virginity to her mother’s 35-year-old boyfriend, played to perfection by Alexander Skarsgaard. Critics have accused the film of being blasé on the subject of abuse, but Powley disagrees: “I think it's a testament to the

writing that, when I first read the script, jumped out to me. I didn’t just see a girl sleeping with an older man; it’s so much more about a girl coming of age, coming into herself, learning to love herself. Their relationship is just one of the relationships for me.” The now 23-yearold goes on to say: “I guess I was nervous because I didn’t want people to use the ‘p’ word [puberty], and we’ve been really lucky: how we wanted to present the film is how it’s being perceived.” Far from being the victim, Minnie is utterly complicit in her carnal adventures − if anything, the sympathy is for the adults who seem incapable of engaging in mature relationships. So, how exactly did this young woman from London end up taking Hollywood by storm in only her second feature film? Born in Shepherd’s Bush to an actor father and casting director mother, Powley is quick to crush assumptions that this has given her an unfair advantage, insisting her parents were ‘horrified’ by her decision and “wanted me and my sister to do anything but act… law, medicine, something sensible.”

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW Her interest in theatre began in her early teens when she participated in a Saturday drama group called Young Blood Theatre Company, with fellow Holland Park school friends. It was here she was discovered by a casting director and chosen to play Daisy Miller in CBBC series M.I High. But it wasn’t until she landed the role of Maggie in Tusk Tusk at London’s Royal Court Theatre that a career in acting seemed like a serious option. “My dad’s an actor, my mother’s a casting director, it very much unglamorised acting for me when I was growing up. It was my parents’ job. I wasn't really that interested in it to be honest, and having that has always made me keep my feet firmly on the ground.” Her big screen debut was as a young Princess Margaret in A Royal Night Out, a fictional account of VE Day when Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were allowed to join the celebratory crowds; another film that caused controversy, thanks to rumours that Her Majesty was not pleased about the portrayal. Powley, though, would like to think that Queen Elizabeth has seen the film saying, “At the end of the day, if you’re playing a character based on someone from real life, there has to be a liberty for the actor to leave reality and enter fantasy to create the character. So, hopefully she’ll understand it’s not based on hard fact. But they did join in the crowds on VE Day and enjoy the celebrations. It’s not too far from reality I’d imagine. I’d like to think they had the chance to let their hair down and party.” With The Diary of a Teenage Girl already the toast of this year’s Sundance Festival and with rumours of Academy Award nominations, Powley has been favourably compared to fellow Londoner Carey Mulligan, who similarly rose to fame overnight playing an innocent teen in 2009’s An Education. Despite the hype, the saucer-eyed starlet is determined to remain levelheaded, insisting that, “Of course it’s exciting, but as exciting as it is, as lovely as praise is to receive, I can’t lose sight of myself. I can’t get blindsided by such wonderful praise. I have to keep working hard. I haven’t got to the top yet, I’ve still got a very long way to go. I still have to graft.” Bel Powley is definitely a woman who likes to speak her mind; when The Diary of a Teenage Girl was rated 18 in the UK, she suggested young teens ought to get a fake ID to see it, telling The Evening Standard, “Female sexuality and teenage

girls isn’t something we want to talk about in movies, in books or even in life. It’s a taboo subject and having been a teenage girl myself, it’s quite damaging. It makes you feel ostracised, like a freak for having sexual feelings.” Whilst she certainly looks the part of a teenager, Powley admits it was harder getting back into the mind-set of a young woman: “I definitely had to do a lot of work in really tapping into what it felt like to be a 15 year-old girl, because now that I’m an adult, I think in such a different way. When you’re a teenager, everything is so extreme. You’re existing

19 CHIS_Oct15_Bel Powley2.indd 19

with so many emotions at one time. It’s so much more on the surface, but now I’m an adult, I can be rational and not so nuts, basically.” Since Diary of a Teenage Girl’s screening at Sundance, offers have been pouring in. She recently finished shooting sci-fi drama Equals in Tokyo, which also stars Kirsten Stewart, and is due to work on two more films this year: A Storm in the Stars and Ashes in the Snow, a story about a young Lithuanian woman who is sent to one of Stalin’s concentration camps. “It's a true story, I actually just went to Lithuania to meet the woman my character is based on. It was incredible and harrowing and fascinating.” Despite Hollywood calling, there is clearly no place like home, as Powley insists she wants to remain in the capital, having just moved into a new apartment in West London. “I will always be based in London: I love LA and I go there a lot, I could spend six months in LA but I love to know that I can come home after all that.” u ● Diary of a Teenage Girl, directed by Marielle Heller is in cinemas now. myvue.com

here are so many reasons T why you might need blow LTD. Picture the scene: you get caught in the rain and your hair explodes into a ball of frizz, all before a date. In these desperate times, blow become your very own fairy godmother by providing you with beauty solutions on-demand. With tons of professional beauticians on hand, they will travel to you whenever you need them. Fast working – blow dries take 30 minutes, make-up, 20, and nails, 15 – you can have an entire makeover performed in a lunchtime. Behind the concept is ex-ELLE editor-inchief and launching editor of Grazia, Fiona McIntosh, who managed the £16m glossy mag project while raising two young children. Understanding the need for quick beauty, she is now the co-founder and creative director of blow LTD, all while working as a consultant to the publishing house Mondadori. You know what they say: Give a girl the right blow dry and she can take over the world. ● blowltd.com

FOOD

● Deliveroo lthough we don’t like to admit it, sometimes, we don’t want to cook. On days like this we turn to Deliveroo. Bringing restaurant food to you in an average of 32 minutes, this app allows you to order-in while on the go. While the concept isn’t ground-breaking, Deliveroo’s USP makes it stand-out from some very fierce competition. You see, this company doesn’t just lump together all the local takeaway joints, they pull in many of London’s best restaurants who don’t usually deliver. While ordering in central London means you can eat a MEATliquor burger at your desk, the range of restaurants delivering to zone 3-6 are impressive with the likes of GBK and Gaucho among the ever-growing list. Not only is the app streamlined, its timings are pretty accurate too – ideal for those of us who are not only time poor but terrible in the kitchen too. ● deliveroo.co.uk A

“D

id you know there’s an app for that?” My friend tells me as I get up to go and conquer a mountain of washing. To my amazement, he’s right, there is an app for that. In fact, there’s an app for pretty much everything these days. From beauty

and food to cleaners and personal trainers, the app-savvy millennial can get any service brought to them, all with the click of a button. But my scepticism doesn’t cease. Is it really easier and more efficient to get someone to come and do things for me? To find out, I decided to put the biggest concierge apps to the test…

rom last-minute childminders to emergency locksmiths, Bizzby do it all, fast. Catering to what CEO Rohan Sinclair Luvaglio calls the “nowgeneration”, each order is made on-demand so that any available, Bizzby-approved professional can be sent to you ASAP. Working much like Uber, this app uses your GPS signal to find your exact location, scan the local area, and find a fully vetted professional working within a certain radius. As a result, days spent waiting (and then paying a premium for) on-call electricians and plumbers are a thing of the past; now your problems can be solved in just three taps of an iPhone. While all of the services offered are useful from time to time, the real lifesaver for me has been the cleaner. By selecting from a dropdown list, you simply choose what type of place needs cleaning − be it a house, flat or office − and upload a picture of the mess. Ideal for everyday tasks, as well as more thorough deep cleans, Bizzby matches you with an appropriate cleaner so that all you need is a hoover, mop and bucket to help them on their way. The lovely Kelsey arrived in just under an hour and was both friendly and efficient – she managed to clean my entire flat (post-party) in just three hours. My advice would be to stop trawling endlessly through Yelp, it’s not relevant anymore, Bizzby has arrived and it’s changing the face on-demand help. ● bizzby.com F

o, you think you’re too busy to workout? With TruBe, you no longer have that excuse. Offering professional personal trainers at a time and place to suit you, this app removes the barriers that get in the way of exercise. Putting you in control of the PT, TruBe is ideal for time-pressed professionals and busy parents. Each session is bespoke, from the intensity level to the style; which includes everything from HIIT and boxing, to yoga and ballet barre. Booking the session through the app was really easy; my HIIT class, on the other hand, was not. Having chosen to workout in my local park, my PT Alex arrived fully equipped with sandbells, resistance bands, mat and rope ladder. With boundless energy and motivation, Alex kept me working hard throughout the hour so I left completely exhausted – it turns out, he had won the ICO light welterweight World Kickboxing Championship in 2013, which makes sense in retrospect. While the service doesn’t let you request the same trainer twice – the service works on the basis of efficiency so anyone who is available and suited to your needs will be booked on the job – you can rest assured that TruBe trainers have all received signature coaching to ensure a first-rate experience every single time. ● trubeapp.com S

NOW YOUR PROBLEM can be solved in just THREE TAPS OF AN IPHONE LAUNDRY

● Laundrapp hate laundry, you hate laundry, don’t we all hate laundry? That’s why you need to download Laundrapp right now. Taking on the most mundane chore, this app puts door-to-door laundry and dry cleaning at your fingertips. Partnering with long-established, well-respected companies who already service 5 star hotels and restaurants, Laundrapp are reviving the launderette by making it on-demand and current to Generation Y. Offering clients the opportunity to be in control of the little details, such as the hour your items will be collected and returned, it makes the laundering process painlessly quick and easy. Admittedly, sending your clothes off to someone new is unnerving, but you needn’t worry; these guys know what they’re doing. From the slick, intuitive, user-friendly app to the service itself, everything went according to plan for me: the courier came and collected the 8kg bag of washing when the app said he would and it was returned just 48hrs later, washed, ironed, hung and folded. Having successfully done my laundry without shrinking, dying or losing anything, I can confidently say that this app will change your life. ● laundrapp.com I

“I

don’t want to be a sell-out.” Millie Mackintosh sits poised in the meeting room of Random House’s Pimlico headquarters. “Doing my own clothing line, it’s been an amazing journey. It’s still a challenge, but I want to be involved, I don’t want to pass it on someone else,” says the 26-year-old of her “folky-boho” AW15 collection. “It’s a mix of day dresses, dresses for day-to-night, faux fur, tassels, embroidery, tapestry, lace-up details.” Case in point, Mackintosh’s current outfit from the 27-piece range: a forest green skater dress with a daring deep-V lace-up neck. As she leans forward to offer me one of her Nutty Butter & Seed Cookies, it was perhaps, a daring choice. Then again that’s Mackintosh. Brave enough to try things she’s never done before, the savvy businesswoman has just released her first book, MADE, which is a lifestyle guide-cum-style bible featuring tips from industry experts; “people who make you look and feel good.” But what it really is, is further affirmation of Mackintosh’s status as a fashion, fitness and food guru. With her website and one million Instagram followers giving GOOP – and the woman behind it – a run for its money, the entrepreneur continues to prove she’s so much more than a former reality TV star. Where to now for Mackintosh? “I’d love to expand [the label], add shoes at some point; I’d love to do bags and hats... I’m potentially working on an exclusive line with other brands I work with, it’s really, really exciting.” While in the past Mackintosh has had to defend her career success, there’s no denying that now, she’s MADE it. ◆

FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING FROM THE CURRENT COLLECTION?

Super simplest things – the top I call the “box top.” I love that it's loose and boxy. We’ve done it a million different ways, but it’s basically very easy, simple. The cashmere box top for fall is a classic – it just feels right, right now. ◆

FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING EVER?

The Box top. It was one of the first pieces I designed and I still love it. My other favorite is the classic coat – for years, we just called it “the coat.” ◆

he most significant purchase you’ll make in the next month or two will be your new winter coat. The tricky thing is that there are so many styles to choose from. From parkas to peas and macs to duffles – the options are endless. Right now, however, it’s all about oversized outer layers. The biggest trend this Autumn Winter ’15 is for billowing double-breasted overcoats with a distinct 80s power dressing vibe. The season’s best can be found at Paul Smith, Korean label Wooyoungmi and British brand Burberry Prorsum. Wear yours with a fitted crew neck, tapered trousers and some derbies, or throw it over a suit for a Patrick Bateman inspired look (just be sure to forgo the axe). ◆

Therapist Lenka Benesova reveals the healing power of biodynamic craniosacral therapy

C

raniosacral therapy is a little known treatment proven to treat those suffering the after effects of physical or mental shock and often succeeds where physiotherapy and other mainstream treatment options have failed. Ailments that are improved by craniosacral therapy include, but are not limited to, those recovering from operations, those physically or emotionally traumatised, whether in an accident or just in life, chronic pain patients and those going through a life change. It can also relieve the effects suffered from bereavement, anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia. So, what is craniosacral therapy? It is an exceptionally gentle yet

extremely powerful form of treatment, increasingly recognized for the depth of its influence, the comprehensive range of its therapeutic effects, and its ability to resolve issues that are not helped by other means. The therapy works on many different levels. It influences the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, the cardio-vascular system, the immune system, the organs, the connective tissues, the fluids and the energy systems of the body. It treats people rather than conditions and is primarily concerned with creating and maintaining a healthy, balanced state on all levels - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. This underlying state of wellbeing enables the body's own healing mechanisms to operate at an optimum level, and therefore enables the body to restore

53 Lenka advertorial_BATT_OCT15-V3.indd 53

health. Craniosacral therapy involves a very gentle touch of the practitioner’s hands, both for diagnosis and for treatment. This light contact can identify subtle disturbances. I am always amazed at what I can read just with my hands. Feeling the presence or absence in the body, freeze, activation on neural system, fears, emotions, rooted beliefs and much more on many different levels. It is fascinating to witness the tissue letting go of whatever was held there, usually for very long time. Treatment is usually experienced as a very profound relaxation which may affect the whole person, physically, mentally and emotionally, often accompanied by a feeling of lightness and ease. Releasing long term held patterns in the body can make a significant difference to someone’s life on many different levels. Increase of energy, finding a deep sense of body-mind connection, a sense of wellbeing and just feeling yourself again. Lenka Benešova is a Registered Craniosacral Therapist with many years experience who started her career as a physiotherapist 20 years ago. Using her extensive knowledge of anatomy and the way the human body works, she has moved into alternative therapy and represents the best of both worlds: a melding of the spiritual and the medical. ◆

SEARED SCALLOPS

iving scallops a quick sea in the pan really brings out their sweetness, so a Blanc de Blancs fizz could work wonders, but perhaps a more interesting alternative is South Africa’s flagship white grape, Chenin Blanc. This is made by one of the most successful Chenin producers, with its fresh-but-rich stone fruit flavours acting as the perfect foil to the scallop’s sweet meat. ◆

LANCASHIRE HOTPOT

he wholesome meaty flavour of hotpot likes nothing more than a red Bordeaux blend as a wine match. This Tuscan version fits the bill perfectly with its intense dark cherry fruit and smooth tannins. However, the key to this match is its brightness of fruit (to lift the meaty hotpot) which comes courtesy of its Tuscan coast location. Made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Alicante Bouschet grapes. ◆

APPLE CRUMBLE

he juiciness of apples and creaminess of custard has a lovely affinity with the pungent grape Gewurztraminer, and all the more so when there’s cinnamon spice added to the dessert. This one from Alsace has luscious – but only slightly sweet – honeyed fruit with a tingling spice that revives the palate and picks up on the subtle spicing of the dessert while its generous velvety texture glides over the apple filling brilliantly. ◆

SUPPER The website bringing haute cuisine home

eet SUPPER, London’s first ever Michelin starred delivery service – a game-changer in terms of eating in. Boasting an array of the finest restaurants London has to offer (amongst them Tamarind, Benares and Randall and Aubin), SUPPER’s aim is to make sure that the food that leaves the kitchen arrives at your door in the same state it left in. This is achieved by state-of-the-art Japanese bikes that can zip through the congestion in the capital, transporting their precious cargo in record time. We placed our order and while dithering over our postcode, a helpful chat popped up offering us assistance. We declined, but this was already more of an experience than a hasty take-out from JustEat. We chose M Restaurant (Threadneedle Street, EC1R) as my friend and I fancied a steak. Soon an Argentine rump fillet, an Argentine sirloin (both served with chips), a spring green risotto, a chicken bao and a beef cheek bao we scooting their way towards my house. I received a wonderfully civil text telling me my food was on its way and in no time at all there came a knock at the door. A uniformed delivery man handed over the beautifully packaged food and as we took the first bite of piping hot bloody, tender steak we knew we had discovered a take-out website we couldn’t live without. u M

or brilliant dim sum and delectable cocktails, there can be no better spot than Fu Manchu. Located a stone’s throw from Clapham North station, the restaurant’s aesthetic is a blend of traditional Chinese decor and modern London bar-chic. The restaurant’s nod to Dr Fu Manchu isn’t limited to its name, with a sculpture of the fictional character taking prime position on the bar top. On recommendation from our server, we ordered a mix of dishes from the steamed, fried, soup and salad menus. We began with fluffy Cha Sui Bao buns of honied barbecue pork and Lung Har Gau and Gow Choi Gau dumplings of lobster, prawn and bamboo shoots and prawn and chive in translucent skins. Salads of crispy duck, orange and

Chinese leaf, as well as hot and sour rare beef and broccoli were not only as delicious as they sound but a refreshing, well-needed break in between dim sum basket-hopping. The prawn and chicken Wangon Tong soup arrived next and proved a delicate and subtle dish, before the scrumptious and ever-popular Jiua Yim Sin Yau (battered and fried squid) hit the table. Finishing the feast with Jai Lai Wong Bao crispy buns filled with custard and the ‘Lady Jasmine’ cocktail of a Bombay Sapphire, lemon juice, jasmine syrup and egg whitess, Fu Manchu pulled off the London-meets-Canton dining experience and managed to surpass all of my expectations in the process. u

Method 01 Celeriac purée: place the 60ml of olive oil in a saucepan on a medium-high heat. Add the onions and fry for 5–6 minutes until soft and starting to caramelize. Add the garlic and bay leaves and cook for another minute before adding the celeriac. Fry for 8–10 minutes, stirring often, so that all sides are golden-brown. Pour over the stock, bring to the boil, then simmer on a medium heat for 15 minutes. Remove from the heat, discard the bay leaves and transfer to a blender. Blitz to form a smooth purée before adding the tahini, lemon juice, cumin, coriander, 11/2 teaspoons of salt and a good grind of black pepper. 02 Put the oil for the spiced cauliflower into a large sauté pan and place on a medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes, until soft. Add the garlic and cook for another 2 minutes, then add the ras el hanout and cook for another minute. Pour over 100ml of water and stir through for a minute before removing from the heat. Fold in the cauliflower, preserved lemon, almonds, half of the parsley and 1 teaspoon of salt and set aside to cool. 03 When ready to serve, divide the purée between six plates. Drizzle 1/2 teaspoon of oil over each portion, spread the cauliflower on top and sprinkle over the smoked paprika and remaining parsley. 04 To fry the quail’s eggs, place a large frying pan on a medium heat and add oil. Crack each egg into the pan and fry for 30–60 seconds. Season with a pinch of salt and a grind of black pepper, then place an egg or two on top of each portion of cauliflower and serve at once. u

QUAILS With burnt miso butterscotch and pomegranate and walnut salsa

Serves 8 as a starter, 4 as a main Ingredients • 150g of white miso paste, at room temperature • 50ml of mirin • 30g of light brown sugar • 2 tea spoon of sherry vinegar • 40g of unsalted butter, at room temperature • 2 table spoon of sunflower oil • 8 whole quails, de-boned and with the wing tips left on (1.1kg) • coarse sea salt and black pepper • Salsa • 150g of pomegranate seeds (the seeds of 1 medium pomegranate) • 70g of walnuts, toasted and roughly chopped • 35g of pickled walnuts, rinsed, with the skin removed, finely chopped (this is optional) • 2 tea spoon of pomegranate molasses • 2 table spoon of Valdespino sherry vinegar (or another good-quality sherry vinegar) • 1 table spoon of olive oil • 20g parsley, carefully and finely chopped

M e th o d 01 Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas mark 3. 02 Use a rubber spatula to spread the miso paste out thinly and evenly on a parchment-lined baking tray. Place the tray in the oven and roast for 20–25 minutes, until the miso has turned to dark caramel: the sides should look burnt and the middle a dark golden-brown. Set aside to cool. Scrape the burnt miso paste off the parchment paper, breaking it as you go, and transfer the pieces to a food processor, along with the mirin, sugar, vinegar, butter and 1 tablespoon of water. Blitz well for 5 minutes to form a smooth aerated paste. 03 Place all the salsa ingredients, apart from the parsley, in a medium bowl with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 3 tablespoons of water. Mix well and set aside, stirring the parsley in just before serving. 04 When you are ready to serve, set the oven to its highest grill setting. 05 Place a large sauté pan on a high heat and add the oil. Season the quails with 1 teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper and, once the pan is hot, add them skin-side down in batches. Fry for 5 minutes, turning once. Transfer the quails to a parchment-lined baking tray and spread 1 tablespoon of miso butterscotch evenly over the skin of each bird. Place the tray under the grill and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the miso starts to bubble and caramelize. Serve at once, with the salsa spooned on top or alongside. ◆

COURGETTE AND MANOURI FRITTERS Makes 12 fritters, to serve 4, or 24 smaller fritters, to serve 8 as a snack Ingredients • 3 medium courgettes, trimmed and coarsely grated (580g) • 2 small shallots, finely chopped (50g) • 2 garlic cloves, crushed finely grated zest of 2 limes • 60g self-raising flour • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 21/2 tsp ground coriander • 11/2 tsp ground cardamom • 150g manouri (or halloumi or feta), roughly broken into 1–2cm chunks about 150ml sunflower oil, for frying • coarse sea salt and black pepper • Lime and cardamom soured cream • 200ml soured cream • 5g coriander, roughly chopped • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom finely grated zest and juice of 1 lime Method 01 Mix together all the ingredients for the soured cream sauce in a small bowl, along with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and a grind of black pepper. Set aside in the fridge until ready to serve. 02 Place the grated courgettes in a colander and sprinkle over 1 teaspoon salt. Set aside for 10minutes, then squeeze them to remove most of the liquid: you want the courgettes to keep a little bit of moisture, so don’t squeeze them completely dry. Transfer to a large bowl and add the shallots, garlic, lime zest, flour, eggs, ground coriander, cardamom and a grind of black pepper. Mix well to form a uniform batter, then fold in the manouri cheese gently so it doesn’t break up much. 03 Pour enough oil into a large frying pan so it rises 2–3mm up the sides and place on a medium heat. Once hot, add 4 separate heaped dessert spoons of mixture to the pan, spacing them well apart and flattening each fritter slightly with the flat side of a slotted spoon as they cook. Cook for 6 minutes (or according to the cooking instructions above, if your fritters are quenelles), turning once halfway through, until golden and crisp on both sides. Transfer to a kitchen paper-lined plate and keep somewhere warm while you continue with the remaining two batches. Place 3 fritters on each plate and serve at once, with the sauce alongside or in a bowl on the side. ◆

hen considering a weekend away, there are several popular options: Paris, Berlin or perhaps this time you’ll head to Prague or Amsterdam and really shake things up? But New York? The prohibitive fares and the crippling exhaustion involved in being on an aeroplane for 16 hours in a three-day period kept it off the shortlist. But that was before luxury airline La Compagnie came along. Launched in June 2014, the allbusiness-class airline initially flew only from Paris but, as of May this year, London is now in on the action. Founded by two Frenchmen, Frantz Yvelin and Peter Luethi, with a wealth of experience in aviation between them, La Compagnie’s Boeing 757-200 aircraft is configured to provide 74 plane-wide business class seats at a significantly lower price point than the same class in larger airlines. The first thing I notice when boarding after having been whisked through security at Luton – yes, unglamorous but uncrowded Luton – is how much space there is. Two flatbed seats on either side of the aisle mean that passengers barely have

to acknowledge their neighbours, while the acres of legroom would have had my 6ft 5in father weeping for joy. Suddenly, eight hours didn’t seem such an ordeal. I lay back in my incredibly comfortable seat, which had a control more complicated than most television remotes, and perused my Samsung Galaxy Pro 12” tablet for films and music. Each seat comes equipped with one of these, as well as a pair of large over ear headphones. I spent my journey sipping champagne from La Compagnie’s wine cellar, sampling the salmon from French chef Christophe Langrée’s menu, watching my tablet and sleeping. To say I got off at Newark feeling refreshed would be an overstatement but for once the flight was an integral part of the experience not a preliminary to be endured. After a quick cab ride on the New Jersey Turnpike, we emerged in Lower Manhattan and soon arrived at our hotel. The Conrad Hotel New York is located in Battery Park City, practically on the banks of the Hudson River. The Conrad is an excellent base for those looking to explore or for those in Manhattan on business as it is next to the Financial District. On arrival, it is hard not to notice the enormous artwork that

extends considerable height of the lobby, lit by atmospheric blue lighting that gives the whole area a space-age feel. A tangle of dark purple lines on a blue background, the piece is entitled ‘Loopy Doopy’ and lends its name to the hotel’s rooftop bar which, having come off the flight feeling considerably better than I thought I would, I decided to visit. I took in the stunning views out over the Hudson, while sampling one of the bar’s signature Boozy Ice Pop cocktails before retiring to my wonderfully comfortable room. I had flown in on a Friday night and I woke up in fear of my precious Saturday in the Big Apple being blighted by stiff limbs and jetlag but I felt well rested and made my way down to ATRIO, the Conrad’s sophisticated, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant for some crispy bacon and a damn fine cup of American coffee. A quick tour of the hotel revealed a combination of unfussy luxury and modern amenities, including two ballrooms and a foyer ideal for large events and stylish workspaces for those on business. The hotel manages to retain a distinct personality, however, with touches like the running theme of the ‘Loopy Doopy’ artwork and a delightful barbershop run by a New York legend named Sal. Lower Manhattan has become a vibrant and commercial neighbourhood and this is down, in part, to the opening of Brookfield Place. A gigantic glass structure filled with

towering palm trees, high-end shops and eateries and it is at one of these (Beaubourg, a lovely French restaurant) that I stopped for a small feast before continuing down to the marina. Here, I began to regret my gluttony as I took in the swaying masts before donning a lifejacket and stepping carefully down on deck. I was being treated to a sailing lesson by the North Cove Sailing School and before I knew it we were tacking across the Hudson. There really is no better way to see Manhattan’s famous landmarks: I spied Ellis Island, Governor’s Island and Brooklyn Bridge from the boat but the real highlight was getting up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty herself. Back on dry land I headed for Midtown and made my way down through Madison Square Park, past the magnificent Flatiron Building and on through the markets in Union Square, past (and sometimes into) the vintage shops and cafés of Greenwich Village, lusting after Tribeca’s lofts, before walking back along the banks of the Hudson. Still full of beans, I devoured a truly scrumptious dinner at ATRIO and then returned to Tribeca in search of cocktails. Luckily, Mark Ricci,

Hilton’s affable director of communications, had a suggestion and I was soon sipping sidecars in The Brandy Library, a delightful bar with hundreds of shelves of bottles full of amber liquid lining the walls. Sunday was spent sightseeing and if I have one tip to share it is to forgo the Empire State Building in favour of Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Centre. Not only are the queues non-existent, you actually have a far better view of the iconic Empire State Building itself (not to mention Central Park and the Chrysler Building) from its uncrowded viewing decks. After a mandatory photo op in the admittedly hellish Times Square I stopped for a light lunch under the awnings in Rockefeller Plaza and listened to a little live music. Shopping on the swanky Upper East Side (mandatory) followed by Aperol in the East Village found me still going strong. The grid system of New York’s streets makes it easy to navigate and I found I had covered a lot of ground by the time I caught my evening flight. Back at work I could not help thinking that thanks to La Compagnie the City that Never Sleeps feels that much closer to London. ◆

TRAVEL / UK GETAWAY THE TOWN

T

his small coastal town in West Dorset is as picturesque as they come. Situated on the Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis is a seaside hub for tourists and locals alike, with great British food, community events and quintessential features, such as arcade games and countless ice cream stalls. When you’re not living it up in Hix Townhouse or eating some of the best local seafood at Mark Hix’s cliffside restaurant, Hix Oyster and Fish House, take things slow, wander along the pebbled beach and watch the waves roll into the bay. ◆

THE HOTEL

H

oused in a Georgian build in Lyme Regis, Hix Townhouse is a home away from home. The man behind the restaurant, Mark Hix, is one of London’s most prominent restaurateurs and is renowned for his rustic style, love of art and commitment to seasonal food. The townhouse has been divided into eight rooms, each following a different theme. The best of the bunch has to be the Hunting Suite, which is kitted out with red leather seats and wood panelled walls, on which dormant air rifles and mounted deer head’s hang. There’s no restaurant in the house, rather a small kitchen where you can help yourself to bread and butter or a cup of tea. Breakfast is part of the package, with the housekeeper delivering a large hamper crammed with locally baked goods and other treats for you to eat in the comfort of your own room. ◆

THE RESTAURANT

I

n housing the hotel and restaurant separately, Mark Hix manages to make food more of a feature. The Hix Oyster and Fish House is only a short five minute stroll up the hill and overlooks the Lyme Regis harbor. Weather dependent, grab an aperitif on the decking and lap up the spectacular vista of the Jurassic coast, before heading indoors for a feast of fish and foraged goods. The restaurant is informal, but that provides no reflection on the quality of the food and service. With a menu thoughtfully designed to showcase the best local produce and seafood from the area, and a wine list edited down to perfection, it's a simple reminder as to why Mark Hix has got to where he is today. Oh and if you’re lucky, the catch of the day will be a lobster that was only caught a couple of hours before Ω you can’t get fresher than that ◆

A

s the cold nights draw in, there are few things as comforting and atmospheric as a roaring fire. If this summons up images of fusty, old fashioned brick fireplaces intermittently expelling smoke and soot, think again. Fireplace specialists, Grate Expectations have a whole host of options for adding a little warmth to your home this winter. One such company is DRU who have come up with DG Fires, a dedicated brand for its wood and multi-fuel fires and stoves. Within their range there is a brand new selection of DG Ivar and Keld multi-fuel contemporary stoves that can burn wood, coke or coal. Ivar has a square finished door, whilst the Keld door has rounded corners and each model

features a freestanding High version and a Low version, which, as well as freestanding, can be installed into an inglenook chimney cavity. The Low models have a 4.9 kW heat output, whereas the output on the High versions can be up to 6.0 kW. The energy efficiency rating on all of the models is an impressive 82% – a wonderful alternative to central heating which can be costly and ineffectual. All Ivar and Keld stoves have external air connection as standard, helping achieve maximum clean burning and high efficiency, another big plus. The chimney connections on all models can be made from the top or the back of the stoves so the installation has a degree of flexibility, to make it fit your living space perfectly. If you have a fireplace rather than a stove in mind, look no

further – Grate Expectations are also experts at installing other DRU models such as the Maestro 75 Eco Wave. One of the greatest advantages of this stunning fire is that it can be installed in any part of the house due to DRU’s PowerVent® technology. The realistic appearance of the logs and the dense flames are unique for a gas fire while the high windows and the anti-reflective glass contribute to a perfect view of the ultimate fire. Those looking for a little drama might opt for the DRU Maestro 80/2 Eco Wave with its “fire in the corner model”. This can be installed tightly to the wall and is available in a left or right sided version; it can also be suspended, creating an almost magical floating platform. The glow, the warmth, the sensuality of a fire can really make a living space so, this winter, visit Grate Expectations to discover the your ideal fireplace. ◆ DRU Maestro 75 Eco Wave

LIFESTYLE

J

ade Jagger, who last year gave birth to her third child and became a grandmother for the first time, lives an enviable life between west London and Ibiza. But despite her glamorous genes, she is always quick to point out that she works for a living (her design projects have spanned jewellery, interiors and fashion) and also isn’t above changing nappies and other domestica. In fact, inside her stunning converted farmhouse in Capo Berta, she is often to be found in the kitchen, describing herself as an ‘avid cook’. The traditional 16th century finca sprawls 15,000 square meters near

the village of San Joan, in the north east of the Island. The recently renovated hillside home features panoramic windows with seaside views, the interiors reflect Jagger’s eclectic, nomadic lifestyle inspired by her time travelling between Goa, London and Ibiza. The private villa, available to hire, has become a destination for food lovers attracting adventurous cooks who wish to experiment with the latest in kitchen design and technology. Techniques coveted by top chefs such as ‘cook and chill’ and ‘sous-vide’ can be executed, bringing a whole new world of cooking within reach. Expansive gardens lined with almond, olive, orange and lemon trees provide endless inspiration for cooking in a relaxed and elegant setting. The heart of the house, within which

technology integrates into the core of the ancient building. The contemporary, high tech kitchen sits seamlessly alongside the building’s beautiful original brickwork and traditional finishes, such as clean white walls and resin concrete flooring. Jagger comments: “I’m a keen cook myself. I always look for the very best – whether it’s ingredients for cooking or materials for my design work – so when I came across the Electrolux Grand Cuisine systems, I couldn’t resist.” Her professional kitchen includes features normally associated with Michelin-starred establishments, such as blast chillers and vacuum sealers – and having opened a restaurant herself, in Turkey, it’s possible that she’ll open one in London too. She’s not telling. ◆

Kitchen Story The founder of Cue & Co, London shows us around his latest project, a spacious kitchen in a mews house Wo r d s C h a r l i e B o r t h w i c k

Q: Can you describe the property and how you got involved in the project? A: When the client purchased this property in west London it was a typical mews house with small rooms, a central staircase, and an adjoining garage. She wanted to merge the house and garage to form a spacious, openplan kitchen, living and dining room on the ground floor with lots of natural light.

Q: What style of space was your client looking for? A: She wanted the kitchen to feel as spacious and modern as possible while retaining the original features and the integrity of this period property. This was achieved by the juxtaposition of modern and traditional. For example, characterful coach doors and a traditional-style range cooker offset the clean, contemporary lines of the cabinets.

89 NH_SEP15NH_CUE & CO.indd 89

Q: Did you have to make any structural changes to the kitchen? A: The whole property was dramatically redesigned and this had a direct impact on the kitchen. This challenge fell to Nick Farnell of Nick Farnell Architects, who removed the internal walls and floors so we had a blank canvas from which to start the project. Moving the staircase from the centre of the house to the side meant the ground floor could be an openplan kitchen, sitting and dining room. Q: Please talk about the cabinets in the kitchen. A: We opted for simple, built-in cabinets that runs from the kitchen right down to the sitting room. Integrated appliances ensured that we achieved the sleek contemporary look my client was hoping for. To break up the long run of cabinets we combined a range of different height cabinets to divide the space into activity zones. Q: What colours did you choose and why? A: We went for a subtle grey hue as the foundation colour for the kitchen, but I encouraged the client to add a burst

HOMES XXXXXX& /INTERIORS XXXXXXX / INSIDER

of colour here and there to energise the space and draw attention to features that may have otherwise been overlooked. We added a cerise polishedplaster splashback and a pair of pendant lights with pink inner frames, which really help to lift the overall look. Q: Did your client give you any specific design parameters? A: Because we transformed the kitchen into an open-plan living area, in order to achieve a completely clutter-free look, incorporating lots of innovative storage options throughout was essential. The client also wanted a good view of her beautiful south-facing garden, so we installed sliding glass doors to maximise her view and also fill the room with lots of natural light.

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NH_SEP15NH_CUE & CO.indd 90

She wanted [her property] TO FEEL AS SPACIOUS and modern as POSSIBLE while retaining the ORIGINAL FEATURES

Q: What challenges did you face during the project? A: To create a feeling of space, there had to be a seamless transition from the kitchen into the sitting area. The challenge here was to choose a style and colour that would work for both spaces. To achieve this we opted for a slight

change in the depth and height of the units, which is a subtle way of dividing up a long space. Another issue was that, despite opening up the ground floor, the actual kitchen was still quite confined and therefore storage was paramount. Where we could, we used drawers rather than cupboards for practicality and added in the island unit that not only provides ample storage, but is also a focal point of the kitchen. There is also a substantial amount of work that involves making custom pieces to match existing modular items. Cameron Riddell (director) recalls designing a hanging glazed display unit for 18th century loots and commissioning a changing table addition to convert an existing chest of drawers into nursery furniture. The London Alcove Company has been built into a thriving business that employees are proud and excited to work for. The company consists of a small team that specialises in design, construction, spray booth operation, installation and on site decoration. Cameron is the head designer and oversees every job. Return business is a major part of all work undertaken by The London Alcove Company. Very often the job will involve a few items to start with after which the customer will come back for more and more. Their installation of high quality alcove units, wardrobes and bookcases has been called in the past “life changing” with one customer referring to it as “London Alcove addiction”. The process is very easy and free from the “sales” approach. Customers can either call up the office and book a time for Cameron

The quotes include the price along with a technical drawing which is left with the customer who may then decide to alter the design. The process will then be repeated until the design is perfectly suited and all requirements met. The London Alcove Company offers a 50-year guarantee on all of its work. This covers cabinetmaking work, parts and fittings. With that in mind the company’s mission statement reads: “We promise our customer transparent pricing, a high quality product and a fantastic service, with an understanding that we are working in your home for you respectfully and diligently. We believe the work well done today will bring us work for years to come and our reputation for delivering our promise is something to be proud of. “ With a reputation for honesty, reliability and quality it’s not hard to see why The London Alcove Company is regarded in such high esteem by its clients. ◆

A HOME FROM

HOME

Car interiors increasingly look like the living spaces we drive away from. Absolutely considers their importance to us – and their future direction. Wo r d s C r a i g T h o M a s

O

n average, we spend 364 hours a year in our cars, covering a total distance of 6,584 miles. That’s an awful lot of time to hang out in the same enclosed space, day after day, so it’s unsurprising that drivers (60%, according to some studies) set a lot of store by the quality of their car’s interior. After all, sat in a car for that long – plus all the additional time parked up, waiting for the kids, for example – means that you will spend a lot of time looking at (perhaps not necessarily consciously) the inside of your car.

Touchscreens and tablet-like CONTROLLERS of infotainment SYSTEMS are now STARTING TO DOMINATE the centre CONSOLES of new cars We therefore want to feel as comfortable in our cars as we do in, say, our living rooms and this is something that car designers have come realise – albeit relatively belatedly. It wasn’t until the 1990s that car companies started to understand just how important the interior of a car was to consumers. Manufacturers realised that car buyers

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chis_Oct15_Motoring Feature.indd 98

were finding it difficult to tell models apart by the exterior styling (things haven’t changed much since then: you only have to look at the lines of similarlooking family hatchbacks on today’s roads), so they started to pay more attention to the comfort, functionality and general ambience of a car’s cabin, especially at the premium end of the market. In the 21st Century, car brands are now highly focused on their models’ interiors, using designers who specialise in interiors and looking to the worlds of fashion and home furnishings to source new trends and inspiration for new materials and forms. Take the materials; wood and leather have traditionally been the go-to choices for decades, especially in premium and luxury cars, but there’s been a change in recent years, driven by changing tastes among customers and, at the same time, concerns about sustainability. Adriana Monk, an automotive interior design consultant who has previously worked for Rolls-Royce and Land Rover, explained the changing trend, saying: “At one point if you wanted to be in the automotive luxury space you had to put wood and leather into the interiors. Now, you have to tell the environmental story, otherwise you’re not credible.” So, we’re now seeing recycled and reconstituted plant fibres and plastic bottles used as materials in car interiors, along with the likes of aluminium (brushed or textured) and the current

high-tech favourite, carbon fibre – which also has the advantage of reducing the weight of the car (in turn helping to make it more efficient). And there are advances in materials science all the time that are shifting the goalposts – as long as we, the consumers, are open-minded enough to accept them. Jenny Morgan-Douralis, a colour and trim designer for Australian car brand Holden suggests that such advances could indeed change the way we think. Pointing to the use of a heavily textured plastic panel on the Avenir, a concept car shown at this year’s Detroit Motor Show from

HOMES & INTERIORS / AUTOMOTIVE Buick, the premium US car brand, she said: “It's almost like a glass. It's glasslike but it's a polymer, high-gloss. The word ‘plastic’ has connotations, but you can look at that and, from a purist's point of view, [that works]. You might look for ideas and see it in glass and think ‘How do we interpret that?’ And it might be in plastic. You can make it look beautiful.” And technology is not only changing the materials we’re seeing in our cars: it is also having a major effect on how car interiors look. Touchscreens and tablet-like controllers of infotainment systems are now starting to dominate the centre consoles of new cars, such as the Volvo XC90 and Tesla Model S. And, as everything in the car becomes controlled by tablet-like screens, in a single touch point, the numerous switches and buttons we expect to see in cars are gradually becoming redundant. This simplification of dashboards and consoles inevitably leads to a cleaner, more minimalist look in car interiors, one that we consumers seem to like. As Sheryl Connelly, a future trends guru working for Ford, explains: “Today, it’s the streamlined, uncluttered message that seems to resonate with people. It’s inviting. It makes you think like you can’t

Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion

CABINS have to

be functional, as well as STYLISH AND COMFORTABLE

do anything wrong – you’re not going to break it.” Details are important, too. A little cubbyhole for change here, a shelf for a phone there – plus, of course, those all-important cupholders for a takeaway coffee or bottle of water – all help create a sense that the space you’re in is yours, a home away from home. Cabins have to be functional, as well as stylish and comfortable. So what's next for car interiors?

Seat 20V20

101 Chis_Oct15_Motoring Feature.indd 101

Well, as self-driving cars start to appear on our roads in the next decade – to a point where they will be the norm by the middle of the century – how we use the space inside a car will change dramatically. Freed from the need to contain a steering wheel, pedals and other controls, the cars of the future really will start to resemble lounges on wheels, with occupants – including the driver – able to recline and relax, letting the car take the strain of the journey. A shape of things to come is the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept, unveiled earlier this year. As Dr Dieter Zetsche, head of MercedesBenz Cars said at its launch: “The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space.” So a cabin constructed using openpore walnut wood, white nappa leather, Plexiglass and metal surfaces is, in effect, a digital living space for the occupants, who interact with six displays on which they can engage with all kinds of on-themove, online activities. There's no doubt that we're currently in the middle of an evolution in automotive interiors, as they change from becoming a place in which we control movement to one that happens to be a space that moves. So, in years to come, don't be surprised to find that these spaces are so homely that we find ourselves looking for excuses to spend even more time in our cars than we do now. ◆

tokke’s revolutionary Tripp Trapp high chair dates back to 1972. Designed to grow with your child, its main ergonomic advantages lie in its dining table height, so baby can sit right amidst the family action, and clever frame which allows for adjustment (both the depth and the height of the seat and footplates can be changed). Few other high chairs can claim to offer 14 different positions, seeing your child through to the ripe old age of... well, adulthood, apparently. Made from beech, another big plus is that it’s easy to assemble, though its solid wood frame does mean it’s not quite as easy to move around thereafter. As with all designconscious bits of kit, it comes in a number of cool colourways and can be reconfigured with all manner of additional equipment – from a baby seat and cushion to a special tabletop with fun motifs. ◆

IN THEIR OWN

WORDS

LUKE PARLE

Sales Manager at Portico, Battersea and Clapham Photography

R E B ECCA N O O N A N

G

rowing up in a small town south of Bristol, I enjoyed a mixture of city and country living. From eating out and shopping in the city, to surfing, camping, and rambling out in the sticks, I loved the finer things in life at two very different ends of the spectrum. Up until the age of three all I wanted to be was a cat. After having my dreams shattered upon finding out this wasn’t possible, I knew I had to find an alternative career. Not knowing what I wanted to do, I turned a hobby into a job, selling tropical marine fish and invertebrates to public aquariums and pet shops. But I was still searching for a long term career. Thankfully I was fortunate enough to stumble into a sales negotiator role in my home town, working for an agent whom my parents bought and sold through. My move to London was also unintentional, and yet again I found myself stumbling into a role – this time working as a sales negotiator for an estate agents in Dulwich. Many years later

I’VE DISCOVERED THAT LONDON OFFERS ACCESS TO THE COUNTRY LIFE I ENJOYED, AS MUCH AS THE CITY LIFE I SAVOUR

(and still working for the same company), I’ve come to realise property is my forté and that I had found my career. Even more, I’ve found a career better than being a cat. I’ve also discovered that London offers access to the country life I enjoyed, as much as the city life I savour. After a recent rebrand and progressing rapidly through the ranks, I’m now running Portico’s Battersea and Clapham offices and enjoying everything both areas have to offer. Being a bit of a foodie, the various pubs and restaurants are rather addictive. Luckily the abundance of park life and out-ofLondon activities my two children and I lust for keeps us fit and ready for the next serving. With my father being in the building and architectural trade and my mother’s keen eye for

décor and detail, I had a naturally inspired passion for property, inside and out. The huge array of period and new build properties in both Battersea and Clapham satisfy this passion. I love consulting with clients and seeing what different people have done to improve and upgrade their properties. The great thing about the Battersea and Clapham market is the constant activity and fast pace it brings to each day. I’m seeing more and more young professionals buying up old investment stock, increasing the ratio of owner occupiers from what was once predominately landlord territory. Both areas now have a healthy balance between the two, and the area is only improving with owner occupiers spending money on their homes. Investors are still wanting to purchase, especially in Battersea, but are now savvier and expect good capital growth rather than a high yield. The best part of my job is receiving positive client feedback and knowing I’ve been both friendly and insightful to guide my clients to the best of my ability. u

s I write this piece I am watching the Chinese economy affect the rest of the world’s stock markets. Newspapers are talking about five and seven year cycles and being an estate agent I couldn’t help but wonder if there was

a parallel with the London property market. Many home owners and potential buyers are constantly watching the house market, some hoping that there will be a correction and some dreading that possibility. Personally I don’t think this will happen and I believe that the market over the next four years will strengthen from somewhere between 20-30%. However, even if the market does drop, at least you can rent your investment out and have something tangible which you physically own. A house or a flat is not a share certificate or a figure on a computer screen that you apparently own; it is something real which will always have value. u

Addison Road, closer to Shepherd’s Bush, is increasingly featured in this list. Other areas that came into the fold included The Bishops Avenue and its near-neighbour, Hampstead Garden Suburb. Today the net has spread a little further but it’s really the volume

D

o you remember 1996? Boy band Take That split up, Prince Charles granted Diana a divorce, the BSE beef crisis was in full swing, and Glen Hoddle took over from Terry Venables as the England football team manager. But what only a handful of estate agents might remember is that 1996 was the year in which the first house sold for £5m+ in London. The property in question is a semi-detached stucco-fronted villa in The Boltons, Chelsea; the road that the Daily Telegraph recently revealed to be the UK’s most

expensive street. At £8m, the house was the first in London to break through the £5m barrier, followed soon after by a house in Upper Phillimore Gardens, and then a property in Roland Gardens, both at £5.5m. London’s property market blossomed from then on in (aside from a quiet 1997 in which the Labour party swiped political control from the Conservatives). Indeed, half a dozen £5m+ properties were sold in 2000 while last year some 250 were purchased, collectively worth £2.09 billion. During the late Noughties the first tranche were north of Fulham Road and around Kensington, in particular, Holland Park. But

and prices that have increased. There are currently just under 500 houses for sale over £5m in London – most of which are in Chelsea, Kensington, Mayfair, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Holland Park, Notting Hill – with a smattering just north of the Bayswater Road. There are also hotspots in St John’s Wood and Hampstead. You might also be surprised to hear that Totteridge, in the capital’s northern suburbs, also features the occasional £5m+ house, as does Wimbledon, Richmond and the areas on the corridor along the Upper Richmond Road. One fascinating aspect of the £5m+ market is the extraordinary acceleration in price that this elite market has enjoyed since the late 1990s. The first property I mentioned at the beginning of this article, in The Boltons, is now valued at around £40m – based on the fact that a similar house on the street sold for £54m two years ago. It’s crazy that just nine years later, £5m seems like a relatively small amount of money. ◆

or thousands of Londoners every year the promise to resist a move to the country grows weaker as the bucolic allure of greenery, larger houses, quieter traffic and better schools preys on their minds. But where to go? Carl Davenport, who recently moved from Sydenham in SE London to Pluckley in Kent, works for estate agent Hamptons

Wandsworth to Woking, Surrey andsworth is, some say, south London’s answer to Hampstead. The area has some of the leafiest streets and largest homes in SW London. This includes the ‘toast rack’ roads, home to TV presenters, radio DJs and celebrity chefs. Three bedroom semis in the streets behind the commons start at £900,000 but rise quickly to £1.5 million or more for the best examples. Woking is just 28 minutes into London by train, and the prices both in Woking and the surrounding countryside reflect this. But still, a five bedroom detached house with a large garden in the town can be W

attersea is a hotspot at the moment as the redevelopment of Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station pushes up prices locally. Homes worth £1.8 billion have been bought off-plan within the project, where prices for some apartments have topped £4 million. The average for a three bedroom semi in Battersea is now £1.4 million, although prices range from £900,000 for a small three bed to nearly £2 million for the largest three beds. Brighton, despite its ‘33rd borough of London’ reputation, offers large semis and detached houses for much less than Battersea. Small to mediumsize three beds near its city centre start at £600,000, while larger detached houses further out range from £600,000 to £1.2 million. u B

lapham’s high street and commons aren’t what you’d call affordable, particularly if you’re buying on – or near – one of its commons. Entry level semis start at £900,000 and rise to £1.6 million for a home ‘between the commons.’ Chichester is a bearable 90 minute commute to London and has a booming local economy. If you’re prepared to live a few miles outside the town, then £1.1 to £1.2 million will buy a huge five or six bedroom detached country house with a drive and gardens. More modest four bedroom houses on the outskirts of Chichester can still be had for between £600,000 and £900,000. u C

utney’s prices start at £850,000 for a three bedroom semi outside the town centre, while those near or on the High Street start at £1 million and can reach £2 million for period or contemporary properties with large gardens. Indeed 60% of our buyers are from south west London, re-locating from Balham, Clapham, Battersea and Wandsworth to Caterham. Many are professional couples who’ve traded in their city flat for their first home in the country, as well as families after a better quality of life – all still within just 38 minutes of London. u

Caterham and its locality has always been a popular choice for London leavers. Excellent schooling, well-connected transport links and picturesque countryside matched with more affordable property prices make the area an attractive option for those leaving the capital. From 15th century cottages right through to Victorian family homes and manor houses, or smart modern apartments and substantial executive residences, there are homes to suit all budgets and tastes.
