Weddings, stressful huh?

It's been over a decade since I tied the knot, but I remember every last thing about the day (despite drinking a tad too much).

There were the uncontrollable nerves beforehand, getting to the church two hours early to find one of my wife-to-be's best friends already there, who burst into tears when I said hello. I was two hours early, but my wife-to-be was one hour late (waiting for her hairdresser to arrive), and I remember the looks of pity from all the guests who thought I had been stood up. Next up the best men's speech (I had two) who mercilessly mocked me, before the money behind the bar ran out, and we left and almost ran over one of our closest friends who had collapsed outside the reception. But... saying all that, I loved it.

If you are looking for any wedding inspiration yourself, flick to our special later in the issue –and cliche alert, enjoy the day, it goes by fast!

Al Murray is set to host an Old Library fundraiser at Corn Exchange Newbury

This Month’s Must See Comedy Night

De Vere are hosting their very first Comedy Night at Wokefield Estate with a fantastic line up of comedians. Abi Carter Simpson is a 2023 Britain's Got Talent semi-finalist with a career spanning over a decade. Gerry K's comedy career started out as an actual result of a dare, but it wasn't long before he was a headliner. And Mike McClean (right) is one of the best and funniest mind readers on the circuit. devere.co.uk

The Corn Exchange Newbury have announced that Al Murray is set to host a terrific evening fundraiser this June, to support the reopening of their historic Old Library, which is under renovations to become a brand-new arts hub for Newbury communities. Offering a unique opportunity to see one of Britain's finest comedians perform in an intimate pub setting, Al will also be joined by sell-out Fringe comedian Ania Magliano (I Can’t Believe You’ve Done This, Pleasance) on 25 June.

Some £2.6 million is required to fulfil the Corn Exchange’s plans to open the Old Library in late 2024, £1 million of which has been funded by Greenham Trust, for the acquisition of the building, repairs, and conservation. Support has also been provided by Backstage Trust, Foyle Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation and Syder Foundation.

Promising a lively evening of bar-room banter from The Pub Landlord himself, all proceeds from the event will go towards the fundraising target to reopen the historic Old Library. The campaign for the Corn Exchange Newbury’s Old Library project will restore this beloved building into a local arts hub, creating a permanent home for their creative participation work, providing a long-term creative space and community hub. Corn Exchange’s creative initiatives focus on improving access to high quality cultural experiences, particularly to improve mental health, and to support older communities and young people.

S W I M M I N G L Y GOING

Whether it’s acting in Hollywood movies, performing big band or on charitable quests, the career of Berkshire-born Victoria Summer is flourishing

Every now and again in this business, you come across someone who is genuinely talented. There are plenty out there who specialise in one area, but very few who can spin several plates and do so with aplomb –and the latter really is the best way to describe Victoria Summer.

Rather aptly, the sun is shining when we catch up in Ascot the night after the premiere of her latest film, Vindication Swim. The film sees Victoria’s character ‘Edith Gade’ as the rival to British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze, who was the first British woman to swim the English Channel. The film, written and directed by Elliott Hasler, has already won numerous accolades at festivals across the world, and he was key to Victoria joining the project.

“I interviewed Elliott on my Next Generation Role Model show, which I was doing during Covid. We were having such a tough time, so I decided I was going to focus on the kids who were really visionaries and leaders

of the next generation who really wanted to create a better world,” she explains. “Elliott came on my show and I interviewed him about his life so far and creating his first film. He was very impressive. He created films on family holidays when he was like 13, 14, and he got his friends to star in his film. I was just so impressed with him. He was so young and so intelligent and well spoken, I just thought this kid has an amazing career ahead of him because he is so passionate.

“I did the interview and asked him what he was doing next and he said he had this film project. He emailed me later and said I think you’d be really good for one of the lead characters opposite Mercedes and I’d like you to read the script. So I read the script and, honestly, he’d written the script when he was 18 and I was completely floored by his talent. He wrote with such intelligence and such sensitivity. I was interested in the character, I love playing the villain, it’s really fun. I read it and thought it was a great project and I said yes.”

You’ll note the use of inverted commas previously because, although Mercedes

Gleitze was very real, Edith Gade was not. “My character went down as creating the biggest hoax in British history of pretending she swam the English Channel when she didn’t. Edith Gade is not the name of the woman who was involved with this hoax. It was Elliott’s decision to change the name of that character, but it does stay true to the story. She’s definitely a shallow person and really what she cared about was the money and having her picture in the paper and the fame, which is the stark opposite to Mercedes, who of course really didn’t like the spotlight and used the money to give to the homeless and create a charity. It is a great story of two stark opposites and I think that’s why it’s so fascinating.”

The film gave Victoria the opportunity to appear in a period drama, something which she loves. “It really is my thing to do period dramas, it’s my niche,” she says. “I have that sort of old Hollywood look, which I must admit I have used a lot as part of my brand, of who I am. I hope there will be more roles in period dramas to come.”

Talking old Hollywood, it was a look back at iconic cinematic history that gave Victoria

her big break back in 2013 when she starred as Julie Andrews in Saving Mr Banks, opposite Tom Hanks. “Honestly, I couldn’t believe that had just happened,” she looks back. “I was living in Hancock Park [she moved out to LA in 2007] and it only takes five minutes to get to Hollywood Boulevard, and that’s where I shot the film. Of course, I met Tom Hanks, and I was in the make up trailer with Emma Thompson and she comes in and knows my name, and I don’t really know what’s going on, I had never been on a big film set like that before. It was definitely the turning point in my life because I was like, wow, this is what it’s like here, this is what happens when you shoot a major Hollywood movie with Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and John Hancock directing. That was a moment.”

There have been many more moments since then. As well as her movie career, Victoria is also an in-demand singer, fronting the Victoria Summer Big Band and currently working on her debut music release too. “I am actually working on a script for a one

woman show at the moment,” she adds. “That for me is a very exciting prospect. I am recording my first single when I go back to LA, which I think will be part of the one woman show. We will record it first and then decide what we want to do with it. It’s a very inspirational song and I want it to inspire others, to create a better world.”

Tea with Victoria Summer is an event that continues the theme of helping others. “That came about when I shot my movie with Chris Klein, Game of Aces. That was in 2016 and I had been introduced to the owners of Teen Cancer America, which is Roger Daltry’s charity,” she explains. “They help teenagers with cancer have a better experience in hospitals and I wanted to help them establish themselves in America. We also wanted to bring afternoon tea to America, one of the things I missed when moving to LA. I partnered with a

“I feel very close to Berkshire and I always will. It really is my home”

tea company called Charles & Company Tea and I decided to rent out the British consulate in Hancock Park for the evening. I thought we would do a red carpet with all the cast of the film, and invite teenagers who had survived cancer and have them talk about the experiences, plus I sang at the event. We invited all these celebrities, we had an auction and we raised money for the charity. It was such a big success, and I just thought I need to keep doing this. The next one will be based around Vindication Swim and is going to be held in Santa Monica, hopefully in June.”

Afternoon tea aside, does she miss other things about life in Berkshire? “I was born in Reading and I lived in Wokingham, and I just love the people here. Plus there’s the culture, how London is such a cosmopolitan city, and there is so much beauty… Everywhere I turn there is so much

beauty in Berkshire. When I am here, I like to go into Ascot town centre and I just like to walk around, I like to be close to the racecourse, I love to go into Windsor and see the castle… I feel very close to Berkshire and I always will, it really is my home.”

LA, though, is where work comes calling and there is plenty of that knocking at Victoria’s door. Expect more film roles, music shows and charity events to come, which is everything she dreamed of when she first went to stage school in Berkshire. “I wanted to follow my dreams, and more than anything I like to create art, whether that’s acting, singing or dancing, and I have just tried to do that all my life really. That is what makes me happy.”

Vindication Swim has its digital release in June. Find out more about the many talents of Victoria Summer at victoriasummer.com

Why we love… Beaconsfield

Exploring the past and present of this beautiful Buckinghamshire market town

Beaconsfield boasts a rich and varied history dating back centuries. From its humble beginnings as a small market town to its current status as a soughtafter residential area, Beaconsfield has evolved through significant historical events, cultural shifts, and economic changes.

The origins of Beaconsfield can be traced back to the medieval period when it was known as Bekenesfeld. The name is believed to derive from the Old English words "beacen" meaning "a signal" and "feld" meaning "open land", suggesting the presence of a signal beacon in the area to warn of impending danger. As with

many towns of its time, Beaconsfield grew around a market, which served as a focal point for trade and commerce.

During the medieval era, Beaconsfield was part of the royal manor of Burnham, owned by the Crown. Over time, the town prospered, benefiting from its location on the road between London and Oxford, which facilitated trade and travel. In the 17th century, Beaconsfield gained further prominence when it became a stopping point for stagecoaches travelling between these two major cities.

One of the notable landmarks close to Beaconsfield is the Old Bell Inn, which dates back to the 16th century and still stands as a reminder of the town’s historical significance. This coaching inn played a vital role in accommodating

travellers and providing a hub for social interaction and business dealings.

The 18th and 19th centuries brought significant changes to Beaconsfield, as the Industrial Revolution transformed the landscape of England. While Beaconsfield itself remained largely rural, the nearby expansion of London and the development of railways had an indirect impact on the town, leading to increased prosperity and the growth of its population.

In the late 19th century, Beaconsfield experienced a cultural renaissance with the arrival of artists, writers, and intellectuals drawn to its tranquil surroundings. Among them was the renowned author G.K. Chesterton, who resided in the town and found inspiration for his works amidst its scenic beauty.

“It is the ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts”

The 20th century marked a period of further growth and modernisation for Beaconsfield. The town saw the construction of new housing developments, schools, and amenities to accommodate its expanding population. Despite these changes, Beaconsfield managed to retain much of its historic charm, with conservation e orts preserving its architectural heritage and green spaces.

One of the most significant events in Beaconsfield’s recent history occurred in 1976 when the town gained international attention following the kidnapping of former Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s aide, Marcia Williams. The notorious incident, known as the "Balcombe Street Siege", unfolded in a house on the outskirts of Beaconsfield, capturing

the public’s imagination and leaving a lasting mark on the town's legacy.

WORK

Previously unseen photographs of Andy Warhol are set to be revealed at a secret location...

The Warhol Kennedy Residence is home to a largely unseen archive of photographs documenting two giants of late 20th century art, Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana. Shot by the late William John Kennedy in the early 60s, these images, which were lost to the world for nearly 40 years, capture the two men in the nascent stages of careers that would come to redefine the landscape of contemporary art. Opening in April in an as yet undisclosed location (at the time of print), The Warhol Kennedy Residence is the only place that one can experience the collection in its entirety and purchase editions of these utterly unique images. William John Kennedy’s most intriguing body of work was rediscovered in the mid noughties, when he and his wife found a set of negatives and transparencies that he had taken of artists Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana from 1963-1964, a crucial moment in their respective careers.

The collaboration began in 1963 when William John Kennedy met Indiana at a New York art opening and Kennedy shortly began taking photographs of him in his studio. They became friends, and Indiana introduced Kennedy to Warhol at the Americans exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in May 1963. Kennedy was subsequently

invited to the Factory and went on to photograph Warhol and many of his circle. Highlights from the archive include Kennedy’s portrait of Robert Indiana with his most famous creation, Love, claimed to be the world’s most reproduced artwork. The Homage To Warhol’s Marilyn, one of Kennedy’s most recognisable images, now hangs in the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. It was shot in early 1964 during Kennedy’s first photo session with Warhol, with a complex visual composition that sees Kennedy physically integrate Warhol with his work.

Patrick Moore, of the Andy Warhol Museum, says: “In the image, Warhol stands in The Factory, sunlight flooding through the window, illuminating him as he holds aloft the acetate of Marilyn Monroe that would later make some of his most famous paintings. Here we see Warhol in a new way – young, triumphant, about to conquer the

art world through transforming the images of movie stars that were his childhood refuge. We literally see Warhol through his art.”

There are also many stunning colour photographs of Warhol, which are intimate, unguarded, and show him at ease, smiling, relaxing. According to Eric Shiner, director of the Andy Warhol Museum, these portraits of Warhol are by far the most evocative. “The Kennedy photos are perhaps the most intimate portraits of Andy that I have ever seen,” he says. “They capture him at the point of his arrival as a true art star and yet he remains his humble, fun-loving, playful self in each frame. They humanise him in a way that few photos do, and if anything, they add to the mythology of Warhol as the benevolent, happy person that he truly was, and yet is rarely celebrated as.”

Royal Windsor Horse Show, this year running 1-5 May, is set to go through its biggest makeover since it moved from the public side of Home Park to the private side in 2005, with much more to see, do and enjoy. The show will also be celebrating the 80th anniversary of The Royal Windsor Horse Show Club and the event’s founding members.

Alongside elite international equestrian sport in jumping, dressage, driving and endurance, and equestrian displays from around the world, there will be five live ‘Hubs’ that will entertain, educate and showcase our Royal Palaces, Estates and the country way of life.

The layout has been altered to give the visitor a ‘voyage of discovery and delights’. The hubs will complement the interests of the audience, as they wander through the retail section. The five Hubs will each feature live demonstrations and exhibitions spread across Art in the Equestrian World, A Garden for the Spring and Summer, the Best of Berkshire Cooking, a Sustainability and Wellbeing area, and a Performance Hub.

The renamed Carriage and Countryside Arena plays host to the International Carriage Driving Competition and will also see a programme of countryside displays and activities including falconry, gun dog

training, fly-fishing as well as carriage driving masterclasses and stands from drywallers, hedge layers and stick makers.

These new additions will be part of a layout change that will make it easier to walk through the showground and will include new structures, planting of hedges and trees and other new initiatives that are intended to transform the event.

Show Director, Simon Brooks-Ward, says: “Since completing the 2023 edition, countless planning meetings have resulted in a new look and feel for the Royal Windsor Horse Show that, while sympathetic to our surroundings and heritage, concentrates very much on the future. At the heart of this great event is the horse and we will never lose sight of the fact we are Britain’s oldest and largest horse show, producing a huge range of skills, breeds and competition.”

CSI5 Show Jumping will be a highlight of the action taking place in the prestigious Castle Arena. The world’s best horse and rider combinations will gather at this iconic

venue to contest three days of international competition, culminating in the Rolex Grand Prix on Sunday 5 May. The 2023 Show saw last year’s FEI World CupTM Final winner, Martin Fuchs – the current World No. 4 – take home the coveted prize after a sensational jump-o leaving Britain’s Ben Maher in second place.

The Defender CDI4 Dressage returns to the show with the Grand Prix taking place on Wednesday 1 May, and the Freestyle to Music on Thursday 2 May. This year, both competitions were spectacularly won by three-time Olympic gold medal winning rider, Charlotte Dujardin, in what was her first international show since the birth of her daughter, Isabella. Next year’s competition will crucially provide Britain’s best Dressage riders with one of their final chances to impress selectors on home soil ahead of the Paris Olympics.

For those looking for adrenaline-fuelled competition, the CAIO4 International Driving Grand Prix, one of the most prominent Driving events in the UK, provides a true test of horsemanship. The event includes three stages:

Driven Dressage, the Marathon stage, and Cone Driving for the three competition categories, Horse and Pony, Four-In-Hand, and Horse Pairs.

Held on Friday 3 May in the stunning Windsor Great Park, Royal Windsor Endurance sees riders participate in an ultimate test of stamina across a variety of terrains. International races are scheduled at 1*, 2*, and 3* levels, over a range of distances, setting up a day of outstanding action.

Showing at Royal Windsor is considered to be a spectacular start to the national Showing season. The 2024 schedule will once again be action-packed, with over 100 classes taking place across four arenas, featuring a variety of breeds and sections including Amateur Mountain & Moorland, Hunter, and Cob classes.

Royal Windsor Horse Show has also confirmed the 2024 line-up of spectacular acts and displays, which take centre stage in the Castle Arena during the week of the show alongside top-class international equestrian sport, for an event filled with heart-stopping action.

BEN MAHER IN ACTION

A new twist for 2024 will come from show regulars the Equestrian Federation of Azerbaijan, with a performance inspired by the Koroghlu Opera and led by two mounted opera singers. Featuring pieces originally composed by renowned Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov, this performance has been choreographed specifically for Royal Windsor Horse Show, and will encompass a magnificent display of 21 horses, and more than 60 dancers. The display tells the tale of hero Koroghlu as he pledges to exact revenge for his father, who was cruelly blinded by the heartless ruler Hassan Khan.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP

Heirloom leatherwork, countrysideinspired clothing and Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s favourite handbags are just some of the designs set to be available to buy in the Shopping Village of Royal Windsor Horse Show. Marking the start of the summer season, the show will host over 200 trade stands showcasing the very latest in equestrian equipment, interior pieces and countryside fashion.

Those shopping for the summer’s social events – from weddings to parties to racedays – will find a plethora of options from the show’s selection of independent fashion designers. Beatrice von Tresckow’s collection is inspired by the fabrics of her childhood years in Kenya and Afghanistan. Her avant-garde feminine pieces include treasures such as such as the dreamily embroidered navy Caspian frock coat, the Bella Dress (a slash-neck, nippedwaist ode to the 1930s reimagined in electric blue velvet) and the clever Reversible Holden Jackets – stylishly tailored with a stand collar and a choice of two sides of popping colour.

Founded in 2004 by Ruth Guise, Shibumi’s trademark rich fabrics were born out of the designer’s love of textiles. The influence of the Guise’s grandmother – herself a remarkable

couture dressmaker – is seen throughout Shibumi’s collection, which includes shot silk suits, hand-tailored dresses, and their signature elegantly constructed coats that look as good teamed with jeans as they do gracing Ascot’s Royal Enclosure.

Speaking of Ascot, no-one planning a summer at the races could miss a visit to Rachel Clunie Millinery. Running the gamut from classic to contemporary, Rachel designs both timeless hand-made hats as well as more ‘o the wall’ and whimsical designs.

For those in search of smart staples, the show provides a number of choices. Look no further than Latham & Taylor – who launched at Royal Windsor in 2019 – for a super-stylish range of classic country tailoring, knitwear and accessories that will last for decades to come. Elsewhere, wool aficionados will be

in on Celtic Tweed to see the latest

Dublin-based award-winning artisan

At the heart of the Shopping village, the ever-popular Fairfax & Favor return. Founded in 2012, the footwear and country fashion designers first exhibited at Windsor in 2014 with their iconic range of long country boots. Now in their tenth year at the Show, Fairfax & Favor’s range includes coats, belts, heels, handbags and accessories that exemplify countryside chic.

Elsewhere, the show is home to a dedicated array of stands for companies that hold the Royal Warrant, including Launer, maker of Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s preferred handbag. Another luxurious Warrant Holder, Rhug Wild Beauty, will also be exhibiting. Creators of a skincare collection made using the finest organic and wild foraged ingredients, Rhug Wild Beauty’s products are the produce of plants and botanicals from the Rhug Estate of Lord Newborough.

Of course, the Show wouldn’t be complete without the huge range of equestrian equipment on o er. Top of the list for

the latest equipment is LeMieux, whose colour-coordinated horse and rider sets are hugely popular. They will be bringing a wide selection of their collection to the Show, including saddlery, boots and leg protection, grooming, stable and yard equipment and a plenty of options for rider-wear. Those in search of quality leatherwork will want to visit the range of saddlers on o er, including English Bridles and Sue Carson Saddles, while Equine America, Equitex and Maxima Equine will be on hand with supplements, saddle pads and pony pick & mix.

H“Henley Festival is renowned for showcasing spectacular art”

QUITE THE SIGHT

Henley Festival 2024 unveils a pioneering visual arts showcase

enley Festival Presented by Westcoast – the UK’s only boutique black-tie festival – has revealed this year’s dazzling visual arts programme, featuring one of Britain’s best-selling figurative painters Mark Demsteader, the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and Archibald People’s Choice Award-winning artist Esther Erlich, and sculptor Holly Bendall, who creates striking bronzes including a Greenpeacesupported permanent public installation that can be experienced in Porthleven.

Henley Festival is renowned for pioneering spectacular festival art, and this year’s stunning line-up showcases an enchanting array of fine art, ceramics, sculptures, photography, prints, paintings and light installations – all forming part of five magical summer nights packed full of world-class music, comedy, dining, dancing, fireworks and magical moments. From Wednesday 10 July to Sunday 14 July, the green banks of the riverside in Henley-on-Thames will transform into a mesmerising outdoor gallery, displaying works by some of the UK’s most celebrated artists, as well as the next generation of talent participating in the Festival’s charitable initiative RISE.

The Ruby Gallery is set to host a remarkable exhibition of world-class art, including pieces from Haut de Gamme, an international platform for the original artwork, prints, and installations by Alexander Hall – who aged just 22 was commissioned by Peter Jones CBE to create all of the artwork for his international o ces.

Meanwhile, The Festival Gallery will feature artist, surfer and traveller Nina Brooke, who will be bringing her jewel-like paintings that capture unique aerial perspectives of the world’s most picturesque seas, beaches and shorelines, and The Drang Gallery will delight festival goers with their range of modern masters and new emerging talent.

In the Audi High RISE Gallery, Audi are championing emerging artistic talent through their continued support of the Festival’s charitable initiative RISE. Three visual artists – Cheltenham-based Jackson’s Emerging Artist Award winner and landscape painter Conrad P Clarke, winner of the 2019 Phyllis Roberts Prize and 2022 Young Artist Award Robert Ware, and Amie Elizabeth Wolo, who won the 2023 Woman in Art Prize’s Susan Angoy Award – will be exhibiting, each representing a spectrum of creative inspiration, artistic approaches, backgrounds, ages and abilities.

Audi’s support of new talent also extends to the Festival’s remarkable riverside Sculpture Garden, where RISE sculptor Beatrice Galletley – an award-winning, London-based ceramic artist – will have her astonishing pieces on display.

Alongside this, the green banks of the Thames will be glowing and humming with an all-immersive installation. On the Riverside Lawn, Atelier Sisu will be displaying their magnificent, larger-thanlife bubble artwork Evanescent, iridescent in daylight and illuminated in nighttime accompanied by an ethereal soundscape.

Why welding is the newest trend in forever jewellery

Welded jewellery is becoming a popular choice for weddings, rather apt with our special section this month. A welded piece can be a distinctive and meaningful option for couples, symbolising permanence in an alternative style.

Welded jewellery, often referred to as "forever jewellery", is typically made by permanently joining the ends of a bracelet or necklace around the wearer’s wrist or neck. This parallels the lifelong promise made in marriage as an unbreakable and enduring commitment. Many jewellers o er the option to customise welded pieces, allowing couples to create unique tokens that reflect their personal style and the special bond they share. This might include incorporating gemstones or designing unique shapes.

Italian jewellery brand Atelier VM was the first to bring welded bracelets to the UK and at their welding counter inside Liberty, couples often arrive together for a pre-wedding welding experience, which can be a memorable addition to the big day. And of course after the wedding, welded jewellery serves as a lasting keepsake of the occasion, continually reminding the couple of their vows and the special memories of their wedding day.

Welded jewellery tends to have a minimalist design, creating a modern, sleek look that complements a variety of wedding styles and attire without overshadowing the overall outfit. Plus, because welded jewellery has no clasps, it’s very comfortable to wear. The growing trend of choosing welded jewellery for weddings reflects an overall shift towards more personalised and meaningful elements in wedding ceremonies and celebrations. ateliervm.com

Each dress on our rails brings something di erent, but with a contemporary feel threading throughout. We also have a beautiful selection of veils and accessories to finish o your aisle style.

Q What kind of looks are hot in 2024?

A Pearls are ‘in’ this year – not that they ever go ‘out’ in bridal – but they’re big in 2024. Colour is also becoming more popular, whether that’s a bride wanting a blush or nude undertone to a lace dress instead of ivory, or a full colour floral dress, it’s definitely apparent that 2024 brides know that your wedding dress doesn’t have to be white or ivory.

Q How do you make brides feel at ease?

A I know that most brides feel anxious ahead of their appointments, so putting them at ease is very important to me. One thing that really helps brides is a pre-appointment phone call. During this call, we have a chat

about their plans and we talk through their wedding dress shopping so far – what they’re liking (or not!), and what kind of things they’d like to try on during their appointment. At the end of that phone call, so many brides tell me how much more relaxed they feel about their upcoming appointment. During the appointment itself I’ll always guide my brides, and select dresses I think will work for them, their style, body shape etc, but I’ll never force this upon brides. I'm there to assist, help with styling, and make dress suggestions, but no bride will ever be pushed into a dress that they don’t feel happy trying on.

Q What top 3 tips would you o er brides to be when choosing their wedding dress?

1. Be open minded! The whole point of going to a bridal boutique is to try on wedding dresses, so the best thing you can do is try a variety of styles, and do this with an open

mind. Just have ‘you never know’ in the back of your mind each time you try a dress on. We have so many brides who leave the boutique with something they never would have thought they would have gone for!

2. Choose your guests wisely… If you are bringing guests, I like to recommend bringing no more than 3 with you, as anything over this can feel a little overwhelming for some. Whoever you do bring with you, make sure you feel your best around them, you value their opinion, and that you know they will be supportive of whatever decision you make.

3. Do your research. Before booking your appointment, make sure that boutique is the right one for you. Check that it has the type of designers and dresses that you’re interested in, and if you have a price point in mind it’s always a good idea to check this matches the boutiques collections.

Berry’s Jewellers highlight the pieces of jewellery that o er the perfect finishing touch to your wedding outfit

Your wedding day is one of the most significant moments in your life, a day where every detail matters. From flowers, to catering, colour schemes and guest lists – and of course the jewellery you wear whilst walking down the aisle. Bridal jewellery not only complements your wedding dress, but it also adds a touch of personal

style and elegance to your overall look. With countless options to choose from, it’s a fine art to styling and enhancing your beauty on your special day. Your bridal jewellery should be a reflection of your personal style, so whether it be modern, vintage, classic or bohemian, make sure the pieces you choose are comfortable to wear and make you feel confident and beautiful. Here are a number of sets of jewellery that may place the finishing touches to your stunning dress:

CLASSIC

Classic pieces are usually relatively simple, but add an undeniable touch of

elegance and tradition to your bridal ensemble. Simple diamond halo stud earrings adoring your ears, a single solitaire pendant delicately accentuating your neck and a diamond line bracelet gracing your wrist will symbolise love, commitment and sophistication. These elegant pieces are timeless and can be worn with any type of outfit long after your wedding day. Every time you wear this jewellery, you will be reminded of that special day where you felt empowered, confident and loved.

MODERN

Modern bridal jewellery consists of simple, but eye-catching designs. If you want a chic but contemporary look, OPEIA earrings and pendants shine, but not just from the diamonds. The flash of colour from the aquamarine gemstones brings out your personality, whilst the soft subtle hues accompany your dress and can be your ‘Something Blue’. The circular design symbolises timelessness, unity and completeness which resonates across this collection as is commemorates marriage and the joining of two people.

BOLD AND STRIKING

Think outside the box and flaunt bold and striking jewellery to match the non-traditional wedding. At the end of the day, it is your day! This type of jewellery shows your wild and fun personality and makes a statement of your bridal look. Striking diamond earrings cascade down and create an alluring sway whilst you gracefully dance your first dance. A stunning collarette drapes down your neck with sophistication and captivates everyone’s attention with each diamond perfectly scintillating and radiating its sparkle and fire. An eye-catching matching bracelet continues the brilliance whilst you raise your champagne flute, creating an ensemble that no one will forget.

From beauty to vintage trains, the local businesses that can bring a little wow factor

LITTLE WHITE BOOK

Iwanted to start my own wedding fair business that would support local businesses in Marlow and surrounding areas (writes Jason Pike). Something that would be unique and special and promote local businesses. I also wanted to find a wonderful wedding venue that would support my goal and vision – and ideally one that is based in the Marlow or the surrounding area.

My goal was to secure a venue that was onboard with supporting local independent wedding vendors and suppliers, and at the same time showcase their own venue. So I created a Facebook group, Marlow Wedding Fair, and started to look for vendors, couples and venues. I posted in lots of groups and within days the group grew to over 120 vendors, some venues and a few couples too. I was really pleased that within a matter of weeks my idea started to bear fruits.

My next plan was to find a suitable location to host the wedding fair. I conducted site visits and met with venues and selected one that aligned with my vision. I am proud to announce that we have a venue, The Tudor Barn, Burnham, an award-winning wedding venue (tudorbarnweddings. co.uk). They have fantastic reviews

and it’s a gorgeous venue. I have approximately 30 vendors all bringing something unique to o er, ranging from singers, instrument players, stationery, DJs, pet chaperones, florists, and even a magician (me!), with many more involved.

Next is advertising and marketing, something that is new to me when it comes to this kind of thing. So far, I have been on Marlow FM and Mymarlow will support the event too – and of course I am super happy to be featured in Absolutely magazine! So, how do couples register for the first Wedding Fair? I am in the process of creating a webpage on my website for the Marlow wedding fair business side of things. In the meantime any couples that would love to attend please register at magic-pike.com/contact-us/ and use the contact us page, or pop me an email at Jason@magic-pike.com.

I look forward to hearing from you, and for you to be a part of this fair made in Marlow.

TRUE Story

B P Collins on dispelling the myths around nuptial agreements

Pre and post nuptial agreements are frequently linked to the rich and famous and sensationalised by the media. This has led to a commonly held belief that nuptial agreements are one-sided and unromantic, when in fact they can be a practical, just, and transparent way to discuss your financial situation on marriage and agree what should happen if it comes to an end. For anyone thinking about nuptial agreements, B P Collins’ family team dispels their myths and why they can be extremely useful.

MYTH 1: THEY ARE NOT RECOGNISED IN THIS COUNTRY

In 2010, the Supreme Court decided that if a prenup is freely entered into and both parties understand the implications of what they are signing, then the agreement will be upheld, subject to it being fair at the time of the divorce. However, although prenups are not currently automatically binding, experienced family lawyers will keep in mind both case law and draft legislation involving prenups, to best ensure yours will be upheld. Prenups remain the best form of wealth protection on divorce, and are particularly helpful to keep intact hereditary wealth (such as farms and estates) and company assets.

MYTH 2: THEY ARE ONLY FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS

Prenups are increasingly common because they o er protection and certainty. However, it is worth bearing in mind that when deciding if it is fair to uphold a prenup, one of the key factors is whether it meets both of your needs. If the e ect of the prenup would be to leave one of you unable to meet your reasonable needs for housing and income, then it might only be partially upheld (if at all).

MYTH 3: THEY CAN’T BE CHANGED

Prenups can always be changed, as long as you both approve. In fact, a well drafted prenup will include a review clause, encouraging you and your spouse to make appropriate changes to the agreement when significant changes occur, such as the birth of a child or if one of you is out of work for several years, to ensure the agreement remains fair.

MYTH 4: THEY SHOW A LACK OF TRUST BETWEEN COUPLES

Entering into a prenup is more likely to show that the opposite is true. Having an open discussion, at a time when you love and respect each other most, about your expectations on divorce such as what will be ring fenced and what will be shared; how the financially stronger party is going to help meet the needs of the other; or how the spouse that is most likely to make career sacrifices for the family will be compensated, can build a very strong and healthy relationship.

MYTH 5: THEY CAN ONLY BE SIGNED BEFORE A MARRIAGE

A prenup is a nuptial agreement signed before the wedding. To ensure there is no inference of duress, a prenup should be signed at least one month beforehand. If it is signed less than one month before, or you’re already married and want to have a nuptial agreement, you and your spouse can sign one any time after the wedding and it will have just as much weight. This is known as a post-nuptial agreement.

TIPS FOR THE TOP

Haringtons Hairdressing o er their advice on finding your perfect bridal hairstyle

Every bride dreams of her perfect wedding day look, and the hairstyle plays a pivotal role in bringing that vision to life. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the world of bridal hair and select a style that complements your personality, dress and overall wedding aesthetic.

CREATING YOUR VISION

Before delving into the intricacies of hairstyling, it’s crucial to establish a clear vision for your bridal look. As Richard Scorer of Haringtons Hairdressing advises, start by creating an inspiration board on platforms like Pinterest. “You’ll likely notice recurring themes that reflect your personal style and preferences,” he says.

THE DRESS AS YOUR GUIDE

Your wedding dress serves as the centrepiece of your ensemble, guiding your hairstyle choice. Consider factors such as neckline, back details and silhouette when selecting a hairstyle. Richard emphasises the importance of harmony. “Soft hair paired with crisp tailoring, for instance, can create a winning combination, allowing for versatility while maintaining elegance,” he suggests.

ACCESSORISE WISELY

Veils, headpieces, and bridal jewellery can enhance your hairstyle and add a touch of glamour to your bridal look. Ensure your accessories seamlessly complement your chosen hairstyle. Draped veils may require specific hairstyles to support their weight, while delicate tiaras or fresh floral adornments can enhance various hairdos.

REFLECTING YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE

Your wedding day is a celebration of your individuality, so it’s essential to choose a hairstyle that feels authentic to you. “Embrace the natural texture of your hair rather than fighting against it,” advises Richard. By embracing your hair’s inherent qualities, you can achieve a stylish and e ortless look that lasts throughout the day.

LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCTS

Trust your gut and choose a hairstyle that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and true to yourself. With the right hairstyle, you’ll radiate beauty and grace as you embark on your journey down the aisle.

HAIRSTYLE LONGEVITY

To ensure your wedding hairstyle stays flawless, focus on choosing a style that aligns with your hair’s natural tendencies and quality. “Investing in well-maintained and conditioned hair will contribute to a polished look that lasts,” says Richard. Additionally, opt for styles that require minimal fussing throughout the day.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A HAIR TRIAL

A hair trial before the wedding day is essential to alleviate stress and ensure a seamless execution on the big day. “During the trial, expect your stylist to take plenty of photos and discuss logistical details such as timing and any additional hair needs,” advises Richard. Bringing pictures of your dress and sharing your vision will help your stylist understand your desired look and contribute valuable insights to enhance your style.

RIDE IT OUT

Carly Glendinning tries indoor cycling phenomenon

SoulCycle, which is now available online

It's a busy Saturday afternoon in London's Soho when I arrive at SoulCycle's Great Marlborough Street studio. Entering through the light, bright shop upstairs, I check in at the reception desk, sign a rider waiver, and pick up a pair of cycling shoes. There's a buzz in the stylish changing room below, but I manage to find a locker, put on some leggings and a tank top and head into the studio. Loved by celebrities and fitness industry pros alike, the New York-founded indoor cycling chain arrived in the capital five years ago and it seems it's as popular as ever. The studio is packed full and being a total newbie, I choose a bike at the back of the class.

Members of the SoulCycle team are on hand to help me clip my shoes in and I'm ready to ride. I'm thankful that the studio is dark, so that I don't feel too self conscious, but as soon as they start pumping out the music, I find myself quickly relaxing into it. Following along is easy, and our enthusiastic instructor keeps the energy of the room up by calling out words of encouragement. The low-impact, high-intensity workout includes tricep dips (where you lean forward onto the bike's handlebars, supporting yourself with your abs), and tap backs (where you stand up out of the saddle and push your hips backwards). I

crank up the resistance for the hill climbs, pedalling furiously (although I'm in charge of the intensity throughout). There's also a weights section using the light hand weights stowed in the bike's holders. It's a full body workout, but my adrenaline is so high (thanks to the music), I don't have any trouble pushing through. "You're a SoulCycle convert now, aren't you?" says my husband as I bound through the door. I roll my eyes, but he's right, I'm hooked already and I can't wait to book in for my next SoulCycle class.

Their upcoming release is no exception, as they are committed to making their beds as beautiful to look at as to sleep in. With bespoke craftsmanship, Carpe Diem Beds elevates bedrooms into sanctuaries, providing the perfect place to unwind.

Every bed component is selected for its unique qualities; bed frames are crafted from solid, slowgrowing Nordic pine, and fabrics are meticulously chosen from renowned brands. Each bed, crafted in Sweden, is a masterpiece of exceptional artistry and is signed by the bedmaker.

INTRODUCING THE ICONIC COLLECTION

Imagine the serene and picturesque archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. With the rhythmic whisper of the waves, the crisp sea breeze, and the wild heather growing among the rocks. This tranquil landscape was the inspiration for Börje Thuleskär, the founder of Carpe Diem Beds. On a balmy summer day wandering the Island of Stora Kornö, Börje spread out his picnic blanket on a meadow of heather to lay down and rest. As he closed his eyes, he experienced a floating sensation and a feeling of weightlessness. Since that day, that weightless feel is found in the comfort of

every bed from Carpe Diem Beds. And now, the floating sensation is a part of the design. The Iconic Collection beds contain the patented Contour Pocket system, providing unparalleled support and that weightless feel deeply rooted in the brand's DNA. Each bed is meticulously crafted, reflecting Carpe Diem Beds' dedication to quality and design.

MEET THE NEW ICONS: KUNGSÖ AND HÄLLSÖ

The Iconic Collection includes four bed models, each named after islands in the archipelago on the West Coast of Sweden. These bespoke beds can be customised from 44 fabrics in the classic and exclusive fabric collection. Kungsö is a continental bed that combines innovation with an elegant and modern design. It is not just furniture; it is a focal point that elevates the entire room's atmosphere. The design is based on the centred leg piece, creating a floating visual e ect that is both striking and captivating, making it a truly exceptional piece of design.

Hällsö Walnut consists of a handcrafted walnut frame, where the natural variations of the wood make each bed unique. The wooden frame's timeless, classic charm elevates the bedroom's design, emphasising the tailored quality of Carpe Diem Beds. The floating style of the centred leg piece further accentuates the walnut frame.

Hällsö Upholstery is a frame bed with an elegant, fabric-padded frame and the innovative floating design that defines this unique range. The frame seamlessly complements modern interior styles. Vindö adjustable bed is the existing and most exclusive bed in The Iconic Collection. Vindö o ers a luxurious, floating design synonymous with the rest of the collection. This adjustable bed allows you to control your body's position and indulge in relaxing massages, making it a one-of-a-kind experience. With the added convenience of a light feature, Vindö is the epitome of luxury and comfort, setting a new standard for adjustable beds.

ELEVATING THE EXPERIENCE WITH NEW FABRICS

Carpe Diem Beds is set to launch new fabrics as well as the brand's first collaboration with Danish textile brand Kvadrat. The new fabrics are inspired by the calming colours found in Lysekil's archipelago and will feature 22 exclusive designs. Altogether, Carpe Diem Beds now o ers 44 bespoke fabrics from Designers Guild, Romo Group, and Kvadrat, enabling customers to personalise their beds further. The new additions elevate Carpe Diem Beds' existing fabric brand mix and allow the brand to cater to a broader design audience who are looking for that Scandinavian feel.

CARPE DIEM BEDS REDEFINES LUXURY

With The Iconic Collection, Carpe Diem Beds invites you to embrace a floating sensation that transports you to the tranquil shores of the west coast of Sweden. Envision the serenity, feel the calm, and let every night become an unwinding retreat. This collection is more than just beds; it's a masterpiece that invites you to seize the day, starting with a night of unparalleled sleep.

Her work is inspired by her fascination with the natural world, in particular the animals she has encountered from her travels and closer to home. Her way of working is constantly adapting as she experiments with a variety of materials, combining both traditional and digital media, whilst always maintaining her bold and playful style.

Undoubtedly the busiest room in the home, the kitchen is more than just a place where meals are prepared. It is a multifunctional space that reflects our lifestyle, a hub for family gatherings, and a canvas for our personal tastes. However, the challenge of maintaining an organised and e cient kitchen is a tale as old as time. We’ve turned to luxury bespoke kitchen company, Tom Howley, for advice on how to create the ultimate clutter-free kitchen, no matter its size.

When designing your dream kitchen storage, first think about your priorities.

Fiona Aitken, Sales Designer at Tom Howley’s Winchester showroom, explains: “Working out what’s important to you is the first step in your kitchen design project. If you’re a keen cook, plan storage around key elements such as the cooker, sink and fridge. If you love entertaining, think about displaying your glassware in a glazed dresser or incorporate storage for

tableware and seasonal decorations that may only come out a few times a year. Aside from everyday practical requirements, you should also draw up a list of elements that you may need in the future, ensuring your kitchen has longevity. Maybe you’re thinking of growing your family, so need extra food storage, double ovens or a large breakfast pantry?”

Ideally, work surfaces need to be kept as clear as possible for food preparation and e ective cleaning. Alistair Nash, Sales Designer at Tom Howley’s Beaconsfield showroom, advises: “If you have room, a bi-fold pantry is a fantastic way to hide away small appliances such as a microwave, kettle or food processor. Our iconic pantries are completely bespoke to your requirements and can include a range of personal touches. Our pantries can also be used as a breakfast station, incorporating your entire morning routine – from a toaster and a co ee machine to storage for your everyday crockery and a whole host of tea and cereal options. The best thing is that once you’ve had enough, you

can close the doors behind you, concealing all the mess and clutter until it’s time to tidy.”

Drawers are a popular solution amongst homeowners, especially when working with a small kitchen, as they o er maximum use of space. Alistair notes: “Drawers can be tailored to your exact specifications, allowing easy access rather than delving into the back of bulging kitchen cupboards. Choose deep drawers for pots and pans, clever pull-out designs which reveal two drawers in one, bespoke internal organisers, knife blocks and even intelligent charging drawers for all your tech needs.”

Finally, bespoke bench seating can play a part in relieving storage pressures in the kitchen. Alistair explains: “Bench seating is a beautiful way to add a social area to the kitchen. What’s more, these pieces provide storage for infrequently used kitchen equipment, toys, seasonal decorations and outdoor furniture cushions.”

“Good Energy
oers bespoke systems designed around your home”

MEET EXPERT the

In

conversation with Tom Parsons,

sales director at renewable energy services provider Good Energy

Q Describe your role at Good Energy...

A We help customers to cut their carbon by generating their own renewable electricity through solar panels, installing heat pumps to get them o gas and onto renewable heating, and supplying them with 100% green electricity from renewable generators.

The best part of my job is seeing how engaged people are in reducing their carbon footprint, the excitement when they see their energy costs go down after installing solar panels, and the delight at how warm their home gets after installing a quality heat pump.

Q How do you di er from other green energy companies?

A We source all the power we supply customers from a UK network of more than 2,000 renewables including solar farms, wind turbines and hydroelectric projects. Last year they exported a huge amount of clean energy to the grid – enough to power almost 230,000 average houses for a whole year, and preventing the emission of almost 120,000 tonnes of carbon.

You can learn more about our partners by watching the ‘Meet the Generators’ films on our website. You’ll find a wide range of case studies, from Devon to the Lake District.

We’re also a majority shareholder in Zapmap, the UK’s leading charge point mapping service which helps EV drivers search for available charge points, plan longer journeys, pay for charging, and share updates with other drivers.

Q Why are heat pumps so important in tackling the climate crisis?

A Most homes have traditionally been heated by oil or gas, but these polluting and expensive fossil fuels are exposed to the volatilities of the international energy markets.

Heat pumps use electricity instead –which is increasingly sourced from UK

renewable sources – and are four times more e cient than traditional gas boilers because they extract heat from their surroundings and pump it into your home. They are the perfect alternative, particularly for o -grid homes with oil or LPG tanks.

Good Energy o ers bespoke systems designed around your home, covering new-builds, retrofits and period properties, supported by 10-year warranties and remote monitoring capabilities for long-term reassurance.

You can hear from our own customers who saved money on their bills. Search for our ‘Green home stories’. We also have a popular blog, ‘Ten myths about air source heat pumps busted’.

TALK OF THE

TOWN

Absolutely heads inside a landmark Grade II listed former Mill House in Old Amersham

100 ABSOLUTELY magazines
“The property is believed to date from around 1640”

Standing prominently at the western end of the historic High Street on the corner of Mill Lane, Town Mill represents one of the finest landmark buildings in Old Amersham. Believed to date from around 1640 and with further extensions both Georgian and later, Town Mill is thought to have been built on the site of one of the three water mills at Amersham mentioned in the Domesday Book. Over time the property was used for paper making and, in the early part of the 18th century, it was operated by the Weller Brewery family as a Malt Mill. It remained a working mill, latterly to grind corn until the 1930s.

Subsequently, The Mill became a residential property linked as a single dwelling with the handsome Miller’s house to the front, which together constitute the magnificent Grade II listed Town Mill residence.

Since becoming custodians of this fine family home, the current owners have undertaken an extensive project of restoration and improvement involving considerable reconfiguration of the internal space to provide exceptionally well-presented accommodation to ground and first floors with a thoughtful and well planned layout.

The ground floor accommodation provides both formal and informal living spaces with an impressive, elegant open plan drawing room/dining room ideal for

formal entertaining. A newly created kitchen and sunroom provides a lovely informal family space, characterised by its unique glass box reception area overlooking the sumptuous gardens and opening out onto a lovely covered outside entertaining area.

On the first floor a wonderful floating staircase rises into a remodelled, light and airy galleried landing. There are three bedroom suites on this floor, with the principal bedroom enjoying a luxury en-suite bath and shower room along with a walk-in wardrobe. Positioned to the rear

of the property is a large triple aspect first floor reception. This additional living space has its own kitchen facilities and features double doors looking up the river in the rear gardens and leading out to a wrought iron balcony and external staircase.

From the landing a further staircase leads to a clever split level floor comprising an ideal reception or bedroom with ensuite bathroom and two further double bedrooms. Accessed from the study is an extensive loft area providing ample storage.

Town Mill occupies a mature plot of 0.6 acres with extensively and lovingly landscaped gardens designed to enhance the River Misbourne, which gently meanders under an ornamental foot bridge and through a mill race, under the courtyard and garages, to reappear across Mill Lane and behind cottages on the High Street. There are extensive areas of lawn, beautifully planted beds, rockery, terrace and folly. A courtyard provides ample parking and turning space approached via electrically operated entrance gates o Mill Lane.

“Talking first impressions, Town Mill truly is the eiptome of 'kerb appeal'”

To find out more, Absolutely sat down with Mike Lillitou, Director and Head of O ce at Savills Amersham, to find out about some more exceptional elements to this unique property.

Q Is the history of this property a real USP?

A Yes, absolutely. There are only a handful of properties in Old Amersham that enjoy a landmark status such as Town Mill, but none which o er the unique nature and architectural history.

Q Do you find buyers are really interested in purchasing historical properties?

A Working for Savills we have the privilege of showing lots of beautiful homes. A house like Town Mill is no exception and will always be of interest to buyers who enjoy the responsibility of owning and looking after a property of rich historical importance. To say this is a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ would not be an overstatement.

Q How long has this been a residential property for now?

A The property remained a working mill until the 1930s and has enjoyed residential status for close to a century.

Q Are you aware of how much renovation and modernisation has been undertaken by the current owners?

A The current owners have carried out a significant amount of renovation, restoration and improvement to lovingly create a wonderful mix of character and contemporary.

Q For you, what is the first thing that really catches your eye, either inside or outside the property?

A Whilst it seems obvious to say, it’s just how striking the house is from the roadside. We always stress the importance of first impressions – and Town Mill truly is the epitome of ‘kerb appeal’.

Q How would you describe the interior?

A Period character complemented by contemporary design.

Q On the ground floor, what room stands out for you and why?

A Either the kitchen, with its unique architect designed glass box reception area which allows almost panoramic views over the gardens, or the drawing room with its grand fireplace and Georgian proportions.

Q Is the floating staircase a bit of a talking point?

A Yes, it is one of the best contemporary features and was designed by our clients.

Q Again, which room on the second floor stands out for you?

A Funnily enough the redesigned landing is a real feature, having been restored to show far more of the original house. Either this or the wonderful family room which overlooks the river as it meanders under the house.

Q What would we find on the next floor up?

A There are two further bedrooms, a bathroom and a reception room currently used as an o ce. This floor would make an ideal annexe space or teenager’s suite.

Q How does the River Misbourne play a role in the property?

A The River Misbourne is probably the strongest talking point – both as an integral part of the original mill and now as perhaps the most impressive water feature in the Chilterns!

Q Who would this home suit?

A Anyone. The historic character will suit those looking for the romance of a Grade II listed period property, whilst within the house itself the room sizes and layout are extremely practical, making it an ideal family home.

Town Mill is on the market with Savills Amersham for £3,000,000. Find out more by calling 01494 725636 or visiting savills.co.uk

TAKE THE Lead

How to foster entrepreneurial spirit and leadership in young people

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the traditional approach to education is no longer su cient in preparing our students for the challenges of the future. Schools play a crucial role in shaping young minds and characters, and therefore developing a range of robust strategies that foster entrepreneurial spirit and leadership qualities in pupils is vital if we are to inspire and empower young leaders of the future. Promoting an entrepreneurial mindset across everyday tasks and within the classroom encourages pupils to think outside of the box, to take risks, and explore new ideas. By fostering a culture of innovation and creativity in school, pupils are able to develop their own problem-solving skills and come up with unique solutions to real-world challenges. This entrepreneurial mindset not only prepares them for the dynamic nature of the modern workforce, but also equips them with the resilience to adapt to changing circumstances. Leadership qualities such as selfreliance, initiative, and decision-making are also essential skills for success in any field. By nurturing these traits in pupils, they are empowered to take ownership of their actions, set goals, and pursue their aspirations with confidence. Likewise, this instils a strong sense of responsibility and accountability, preparing young people to become proactive contributors to society. Our leadership prefect roles in school are highly sought after with 95% of pupils applying for positions of responsibility. This really does demonstrate the willingness out there and the enthusiasm in young people to create change and make an impact. We manage our prefect application process in

106 ABSOLUTELY magazines

much the same way one might experience when applying for a job in the real world, from writing a formal letter to attending a one-to-one interview. These exercises are fantastic for developing new skills.

Entrepreneurship and leadership go hand in hand with e ective communication and collaboration. As a school, we prioritise these skills helping our pupils to develop the ability to articulate their ideas and work in teams. By engaging in projects and activities that require interaction with peers and mentors, students learn to negotiate, inspire, and motivate others – all essential skills for leading and managing teams in the future. Our boarding houses have also pitched against each other to compete in aHouse investment competitionwhereby they work as a team to create a portfolio of five businesses in a bid to win a cash prize for their chosen house charity. The prize goes to the house with the most successful return on FTSE100 companies.

“Learning from failures is vital, as is continuously seeking opportunities for growth”

Embracing challenges is also a huge aspect of developing entrepreneurial spirit and leadership qualities. Learning from failures is vital, as is continuously seeking opportunities for growth. By creating a supportive environment that celebrates e ort and perseverance, pupils will develop a stronger growth mindset – that sense of belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This mindset not only boosts academic performance, but also prepares our pupils to navigate the complexities of the professional world with resilience and adaptability.

Entrepreneurial spirit and leadership are of course not just about personal success, but also about making a positive impact on society. It is important to emphasise social responsibility and ethical leadership to ensure pupils understand the value of integrity, empathy, and compassion. Encouraging them to consider the ethical implications of their decisions and actions helps prepare them to become ethical leaders who prioritise the wellbeing of others and contribute to building a more just and sustainable world.

Our charity fundraising eventshappen all around the school, year-round: a school fair organised by Years 9, 10 and 11 recently helped to secure funding for

the renovation of a children’s playground in our local parish of Cold Ash. In the same way, our recent Ethical Reading Conferenceprovided a great opportunity for our pupils to question businesses about their ethical positions in relation to the goods and services they were selling.

Fundamentally, fostering entrepreneurial spirit and leadership in pupils is essential for preparing them to thrive in an increasingly competitive and complex world. By instilling these qualities in our young people, we also empower them to innovate, lead, communicate e ectively, embrace challenges, and make a positive impact on society. Our Mini MBA (accredited by Hult International Business School) enables our LVI pupils and nonbusiness pupils to develop their understanding of the business world, but with a focus on personal development, business and finance, and production and marketing. As educators and stakeholders in the future of our youth, it is our responsibility to cultivate the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders, to help inspire them to drive positive change and ultimately to equip them with the skills and foresight to create a better world for all.

SPORTING CHANCE

With a new Director of Sport appointed at Heathfield School, Ascot, Absolutely discovers what lies ahead

Heathfield School, Ascot – an independent secondary boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, rated ‘Excellent’ across all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate – is delighted to announce the appointment of Charlotte Baker as Director of Sport. Charlotte joins Heathfield from Berkhamsted School, Hertfordshire, where she was Head of Lacrosse for several years. Alongside teaching, Charlotte is a keen sportswoman and lacrosse professional, coaching at the U18 England National Academy, as well as the Italy Lacrosse U20 National Team who are heading to the World Cup in Hong Kong this summer. Speaking about her appointment, Charlotte says: “I’m absolutely thrilled

to be here at Heathfield, the school has a great foundation in sports and the potential for an excellent and progressive programme. I have high expectations and am looking forward to developing the sports programme extensively, as well as expanding the all-round positive culture and ethos of sport and exercise for every student.

“Developing a programme to be the best it can possibly be takes time, and for an excited and impatient person like me, it is important to set both short term and long term goals, and continuously reflect on the progress being made on a weekly basis,” she continues. “With the national competitions approaching soon, I’ll be looking to see how the students have advanced in both netball and lacrosse – we’re aiming high! “THE BENEFITS OF BEING INVOLVED AND INTERESTED IN SPORT ARE ENDLESS”

looking forward to developing cricket at Heathfield – both students and sta have such a positive outlook on sport and physical activity in general.”

On her own love for sports, Charlotte says: “Sport has been my passion from an early age. At 10, I learnt to play lacrosse for my home club, Brooklands in Manchester, and since then, I have had the opportunity to be involved in lacrosse both regionally and nationally. From the moment I first picked up the stick, I loved the game. It’s fast paced, tactical and inclusive.

“Whilst studying Sports Science at Birmingham, I played and coached for the University, followed by playing for local clubs including Blues and Hawks after University. This year I have the privilege to be an U18 England National Academy coach, which has been a fantastic experience, working with some of the most talented youth players in the country and helping them progress and develop. I am also currently involved with the Italy Lacrosse National Team, coaching both the U20 and Senior teams at their training camps in Italy for future European and International competitions.”

On how the future looks, Charlotte adds: “I have ambitious and ever evolving plans for sport at Heathfield. I want to enable students to explore a wide variety of sports and provide opportunities for them not only to perform at the highest level, but also just for fun. My aim is to develop

students’ confidence, enjoyment and curiosity about physical activity and sport, and our excellent department ensures sport sessions are innovative and creative.

“Alongside this, we will be increasing the opportunities for students to attend professional sporting events as part of extra-curricular activities. I believe it’s important to not only focus on the fundamentals and technical elements for specific sports, but to also develop students’ general knowledge and passion. The benefits of being involved and interested in sport are endless, and through these di erent experiences, students’ engagement and enjoyment grows.”

Commenting on Charlotte’s appointment, Sarah Rollings, Headmistress at Heathfield School, says: “Charlotte’s energy and passion are infectious, and it is brilliant to see how the students are grabbing the opportunities available to them. Sport and physical activity are integral to life at Heathfield. It is important that every student can access high quality sport and physical activity, wherever their passions lie. Building on our previous successes, Charlotte and our newly expanded department of teachers and coaches have already made a significant impact. I have no doubt that Charlotte and the team will take sport at Heathfield from strength to strength, and we are

extremely excited for all that is to come.”

Happy confident girls succeed – that’s the simple but powerful philosophy at Heathfield School. Founded in 1899, Heathfield was in the vanguard of educational establishments advocating the theory that happiness equated with academic success and has always placed high importance on pastoral care accordingly.

In its latest ISI Inspection the school achieved ‘Excellent in all categories’. The inspectors found that: ‘The overall achievement of the pupils is excellent and represents the successful fulfilment of the school’s ambitious aims.’ They also stated that ‘pupils are happy, articulate and confident’ and that ‘pupils grow into young people who make a di erence to the world and live their lives boldly’.

Heathfield was shortlisted by the Times Educational Supplement (TES) in 2020 for its Boarding School of the Year Award, alongside Wellington and Rugby.

Spectacular performance

Local independent boarding school for girls, Downe House, hosted a ‘Day of Musical Theatre’ at its campus in Cold Ash recently, bringing together a number of prep school pupils from across the local community and further afield for a special one-day event.

Girls from Marlston House, Edge Grove, Broomwood Hall, Dragon School and High March School delivered a spectacular one-off performance of Bugsy Malone, which was watched by a live audience on site at Downe House.

The day began with a series of warm-up exercises, before the pupils headed off in groups to participate in a number of theatrical workshops where they learned songs from Bugsy Malone, choreographed dance routines, mastered scripts and rehearsed scenes, before running through the order of the final production. downehouse.net

Courage Cup

Royal Windsor Flower Show returns to Windsor Great Park on Saturday 8 June for its popular annual celebration of gardening, nature, cookery and cra s. One of the many new additions at this year’s show is the St George’s Courage Cup, a new competition class launched by St George’s School Windsor Castle aligned to the school’s values of ‘Kindness, Honesty and Courage’, to inspire more children to get involved in the event.

The Cup will be awarded to Best in Show from any of the event’s 34 Children’s Classes. With something for everyone, these range from fun gardening activities such as creating a vegetable character, to cooking traditional summer staples like jam tarts, and arts and cra s projects with a focus on pollinators. The age categories allow for those right from their youngest years upwards (6 and under, 7-11, 12-16 years) to take part and all entries are proudly displayed at the event. The St George’s Courage Cup winner also receives £5 prize money. stgwindsor.org

On the ball

Thorpe House School is jubilant as their U14s football team clinched the coveted Football County Cup, marking a historic milestone in the school’s century-long legacy. The boys’ unwavering determination, coupled with their exemplary teamwork, propelled them to a resounding 4-1 victory. This monumental win not only highlights the talent and dedication of the team, but also serves as a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing football excellence.

Sean Day, Deputy Head, was unsurprisingly delighted at the win. “This is a huge achievement for a small school, with only a small

pool of players,” he says. “The team did an amazing job against the odds.

Their next big match is the ESFA National Finals at the Hawthorne in May and we have everything crossed they bring home the trophy.”

Guercino

An historic exhibition opens at Waddesdon Manor that reunites paintings by the Baroque genius

Five works of art by renowned Bolognese painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), known as Guercino, will go on public display for the first time as part of a historic exhibition at Waddesdon Manor this spring.

The exhibition spotlights one of the great painters of 17th century Italy, bringing together King David (1651) from Waddesdon’s collection and Guercino’s depiction of three sibyls – female prophets from classical antiquity – on loan from the National Gallery, London and His Majesty The King from the Royal Collection. It is also the first time ever that Guercino’s recently rediscovered early masterpiece Moses (c.1618–19) will go on public display.

Now at Waddesdon Manor, King David was originally intended for the palazzo in Cesena, near Bologna, of the Italian nobleman Giuseppe Locatelli, with The Cumaean Sibyl with a Putto (1651, National Gallery) commissioned to be its pendant. However, when Prince Mattias de’ Medici saw the Sibyl in Guercino’s studio, he liked it so much that he insisted that he acquire it. As something of a consolation for Locatelli, the artist painted The Samian Sibyl (1651, National Gallery) as a replacement.

They will be joined in Waddesdon Manor’s grand but intimate Red Ante Room by the Royal Collection’s half-length Libyan Sibyl (also 1651), which reinforces the appeal of the sibyl as a model of female authority to Baroque artists.

Another historic aspect to this display is the unveiling of Guercino’s long lost depiction of the Old Testament figure Moses. Moses is datable to c.1618–19, and, although it is not known exactly when or for

whom the painting was commissioned, by 1624 Moses was in the possession of Cardinal Alessandro d’Este (1568–1624) in Rome. It subsequently entered his family’s renowned ducal collections in Modena and remained there until the Napoleonic era, when
