very January, the clichés abound: new year, new you. Fresh start. Clean slate. As with most clichés, there is a kernel of truth in this. The beginning of a brand new year is the perfect time to make some changes and mend bad habits. The advice of this humble editor? Grand gestures are all very well but making small adjustments and achievable resolutions is often more sustainable. Cutting out an entire food group (of which I count chocolate as one) never ends well. Start off with something called the ‘Fire and Ice’ facial on page 30 (not as terrifying as it sounds) and turn to page 35 to find out if certain smells can improve your physical and mental wellbeing in Lawrence Roullier White’s brilliant monthly column. Danish/Japanese fusion is not something you come across every day, so to discover more turn to page 39 where you will also find a healthy recipe, our recommended cleanse and an incredibly nifty way of storing fresh juice. If a change in diet isn't enough, we suggest a change of scenery with a trip to in:spa retreat in Morocco. Alex Jones finds out exactly what detoxing for a week entails on page 46. For all those who were left desperate for more Downton Abbey after the Christmas special, we have an interview with Deptford-born author of A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey, Jessica Fellowes. Find out just how fanatical the American fanbase can be on page 14. I wish you all the best luck with your resolutions, big or small, and just hope they include picking up a copy of Absolutely every month – shameless selfpromotion is one of mine. Happy new year!u

SPOTLIGHT

TALES FROM THE ABBEY From Friendly Street to Downton Abbey, author and journalist Jessica Fellowes talks South East London and fanatic fans W o r d s C at h e r i n e h a l e s

CH: Did you have any favourite places around there as a child? JF: On a Saturday morning Mum and I would always go to Deptford Market which is still there and when I was a teenager I used to go to pubs and clubs all around New Cross.

CATHERINE HALES: What is your connection to Downton Abbey? JESSICA FELLOWES: My connection is that my uncle, my father’s younger brother, is Julian Fellowes who is the co-creator of the show. He writes the show and I write the official companion books that go with it.

CH: Was your own upbringing very Downton? JF: Not at all - I was brought up in Friendly Street in Deptford and my parents really rejected the upper class element of their background. My father was a hippy and my mother was an actress and they wanted to do things differently to their parents. But there was always this odd juxtaposition going on in my life because I was brought up in South East London, very happily – we had the park over the road and I went to

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

DUL_JAN_JESSICA_FELLOWES.indd 14

CH: So trendy! JF: It really, really wasn’t when I was there, it was these very dodgy goth clubs! HEADLINE.CO.UK

CH: Have you done a lot of other writing or is Downton your first foray into books? JF: No, I’ve been a journalist for 16 years. I started out at the Mail on Sunday and then I was deputy editor of Country Life magazine and then I left to go freelance. I started off doing ghostwriting, then I had a strange week when I got a contract to ghostwrite two business books for the founders of Not on the High Street.com and I also got the Downton Abbey books which came through my agent. I emailed Julian to ask if he would mind if I went for it and he very sweetly said that would be great. The publishers obviously liked the connection, too so that’s how it all happened.

WE COULDN'T

have predicted this - it’s UNPRECEDENTED

school in Blackheath – then we’d have these weekends at my grandparents’, which was a big country house. Suddenly there would be all these terribly strange and strict rules at the dinner table. I’d always get slightly thrown. It was expected that I would know how to address a duchess if she turned up for tea but my parents weren’t particularly interested in passing that sort of thing along, so I didn’t ever know. Now, of course I love it and now it’s much cooler that I lived in Deptford than anything else.

CH: What do you think it is about Downton Abbey that’s made it such a great success? And was it a surprise to you to see how it took off? JF: You don’t want to say a surprise because it always sounds like you didn’t have faith in it but we couldn’t have predicted this – it’s unprecedented. I think there are a whole combination of things [that make it work]. It’s beautiful to look at; it started when we were in the depths of the recession and we always like looking to the past in those times. It’s got great actors. I think also, there’s something very cosy in a world where there are a thousand channels and you can watch anything at any time, that everyone loves watching Downton Abbey at the same time on a Sunday night. CH: What is your book about? JF: A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey explores a great house in England in 1924, looking at its seasonal celebrations, traditions and recipes. We look at how the show has appeared in different

ARTS & CULTURE / PROFILE seasons, revisiting the summer fêtes and Christmas, as well as how a house then operated across the months, whether polishing the silver or preparing for a grand house party. And we've gone behindthe-scenes to see what a year-round production it is to make the series. CH: You've given talks in America, what is the response like there? JF: I think I’ve done six trips to America this year and I’ve done everything from 25 people at dinner to 2,500 in a stadium. They turn up in 1920s outfits, it’s kind of like Star Trek and trekkies..

THERE WERE

HEADLINE.CO.UK

‘Free Bates’ rallies in SAN FRANCISCO

CH: You’re the ComiCon of Downton! JF: When Americans think of England they think of Jane Austen or Kate Middleton and not really much in between. They certainly don’t know any European history from before the Second World War but the 1920s is for them, a very vivid period because they know it from their own history. The aesthetics of it work very well, too and its an easy costume to copy. CH: Is anyone in America convinced the show is real? JF: No, to give credit to the Americans, they do not think Downton Abbey is real. You do get people who mind terribly about the story-lines; they got very upset about the Mr. Bates story-line. There were ‘Free

Bates’ rallies in San Francisco, apparently. I’ve got to say, it worked. CH: There seems to be a huge culture of pointing out inaccuracies and errors in the show… JF: It’s a kind of Downton sport. CH: How realistic is it, would you say? JF: They’ve made things as authentic as they possibly can without ruining the telling of a story. Alistair Bruce, who's the on-set historical advisor, feels his role is to mediate between Julian’s desire to have things look as accurate as possible and the director’s desire to tell a story and so sometimes things get slightly fudged but nothing is deliberately inaccurate. What is difficult is that there was no book at the time

that said this is how to run a country house, so just as today people do things differently. You just have a general consensus - as long as the designer feels he can really validate his choices with three or four different references that’s fine but someone’s always going to be someone who says, ‘Great Aunt Matilda always had tables that were only three foot high.’ CH: You mentioned in one of your talks that your favourite character is Edith - do you have a least favourite? JF: No not really, because I know too much about them now so like them all! Even Thomas has got his redeeming qualities. CH: Do you often find out about big Downton secrets ahead of time? JF: I’m happy to say I don’t! I only ever know the first four or five episodes which means I’m never in the position of having to know too terrible a secret. CH: I won’t even bother to ask why poor old Isis got killed off. JF: People were more upset about that than almost anything else, really. Poor Lord Grantham. CH: Another series, another book? JF: Series 6 has been confirmed and we’re mooting the idea of another book at the moment. I’d love to do it, I think everyone’s keen, we’ve just got to see whether the book buying public wants it.

HEADLINE.CO.UK

CH: What will you personally be doing next? JF: I’ve done six books in the last four years and they’ve all been for other people as it were so I’d quite like to do a book with only my name on the front cover u A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey, £20; headline.com

irst there was the biopic, now there’s the book – a new F portrait of Yves Saint Laurent, featuring backstage shots from legendary fashion photographer Roxanne Lowit with contributions from YSL muses such as Jerry Hall, Grace Jones and LouLou de la Falaise. The pioneer who brought Piet Mondrian and ‘le Smoking’ to fashion prominence, Yves Saint Laurent was also one of the most subversive and controversial designers in post-war couture – and his talent made a lasting impression on the industry. Lowit’s pictures document her personal history with Saint Laurent from 1978 (the year they met) to the last show he gave, in 2002, affording readers a glimpse of the backstage experience and sharing a unique portrait of a fashion genius. ◆

A room full of roses, illuminating creams and make up to end all make up

inter is well and truly underway and with it comes the ravages W wreaked on you skin by wind and cold, drying it out and making it generally unmanageable. This is where Neroli Skincare’s Eminence Organics Fire and Ice Facial comes in. Also known as the ‘Red Carpet Facial’ due to its instant effects and brilliant way of readying your skin for makeup, the treatment combines a hot exfoliation with a cooling masque. When I arrive at Neroli, I am greeted by the lovely Julia, the owner of Neroli who welcomes me and introduces me to Keelie Blake my therapist. Both women immediately put me at my ease and soon I am lying in a treatment room waiting for Keelie to apply the first part of the facial. She explains that the exfoliator contains Paprika which stimulates heat on the skin. After she applies it (and begins to give me a lovely hand massage) I can feel my skin tingling and then pulsing with heat. The sensation is intense but not unpleasant. Keelie then gently removes the exfoliator before applying the organic rosehip and mint masque using cold marble stones. This is incredibly soothing and relaxing. The end result: my skin is slightly pink but this goes down quickly and my whole face feels plumped, radiant and rehydrated. This facial is a winter must. u

SCENT

We take a look at the healing and therapeutic properties of balms and colognes W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e

T

he history of perfume and wellbeing are inextricably linked; apothecaries and herbalists across Europe, and barber surgeons in Britain, sold therapeutic preparations that understandably smelt amazing due to the aromatic potency of their ingredients. The blending of botanicals for health unwittingly helped birth modern perfumery. Before 1867 perfumes and colognes had always been considered part of the medicinal pharmacy, but at the Paris International Exhibition of that year a new exhibition space was unveiled the ‘Cosmetics Hall’an industry was born. Some of the world’s most famous scents started out not as fragrances but as medicines or cures. In 1709 Italian born Johann Maria Farina created a preparation in his new home of Cologne, which was used for treating sore gums and indigestion. French soldiers

01

02

03

stationed there dubbed it Eau de Cologne. Napoleon used several bottles a day and subsequently the smell of the blend became synonymous with power and success; the fragrance, Farina 1709 [01], is famous the world over, and is an iconic, classic scent. Another Eau de Cologne, 4711 [02], or ‘miracle water’ as it was known, was first created by monks as a herbal tonic to be imbibed. It was only in 1810 when a new law required that ‘medicines’ declared their ingredients that, rather than reveal the secret formula, 4711 was rebranded as a toilet water. Today, a spritz of energising 4711 is an excellent way to start any day, and a splash in a morning bath is the best hangover cure. At the other end of the spectrum there are many therapeutic balms that, although created for their healing qualities, simply smell amazing. Relaunching this month is Pommade Divine [06]. Used to treat dry skin, bites, scars, burns, spots and a myriad of other complaints, Pommade Divine’s heavenly

35 Dulwich_Nov_Perfume.indd 35

concoction of nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and liquid amber combine in a subtle, spicy scent which will have you holding your wrist up to your nose all day. It is a wonderfully warm fragrance full of calming comfort - the olfactory equivalent of a cashmere jumper. Parisian brand Friction de Foucaud is an energising body tonic which was created in 1946 by Madame Lucienne Merle. She was living in Indochine (modern-day Vietnam) and concocted her now legendary skin treatment for the French military officers to invigorate tired and sore limbs and joints. Friction de Foucaud [04] contains a unique blend of essential oils of lemon, orange, lavender, thyme, rosemary and extracts of camphor and menthol and lives up to its slogan ‘Banish Tiredness’. The wonderfully named Black Chicken’s Balm of Ages [03] contains a sensational list of ingredients including; Lavender, patchouli, cajuput, mandarin, geranium, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, frankincense. Blended to help combat frizzy hair, chaps, rashes, shaving sores, bruises and sunburn, all in one sweet smelling pot. Lavender, rosemary geranium, chamomile and sea kelp come together in a sublime marine manner in the genius Nova Scotia Fisherman Rescue Balm [05]; again, not marketed as a fragrance, this unique product for the outdoors man is a an elegant background scent for those men who do not like to wear cologne; a gateway scent. u 04

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW To start, my companion and I cannot resist ordering some onion bhajis and papadums, which arrive with a selection of dips including raita and mango chutney. The bhajis are flavoursome and tasty with just the right amount of crunch - they are also enormous and each serving comprises of two, making me think this is a dish that would be great for sharing between two. For our main, we look back at the menu; the time to narrow down our choices has come. As neither of us is too keen on spicy food (something that proves somewhat of a hindrance when reviewing an Indian restaurant!) we instead go for milder, but no less tasty dishes off the Chef’s Special menu. The Butter Chicken strikes me as being the ideal choice for my slightly cowardly

n England there is a great affection for the curry house. It’s where we go for birthdays, leaving dos, dates and feels, despite the Indian cuisine, like a distinctly British custom. Located a stone’s throw from West Dulwich station, Chandni Restaurant is one such establishment, lit with moody red lighting and pretty candles creating a feeling of warmth and atmosphere. As soon as my companion and I walk in we are hit by the delicious smells wafting from the kitchen and our yearning for a curry (already rather

strong) redoubles as we are seated. Before embarking on our food choices we give the drinks menu a look and are impressed by the comprehensive cocktail menu and wine list - something many Indian restaurants lack. However, we follow the logic that the only proper drink to accompany a curry is beer. Our waiter recommends Mongoose, an Indian beer that Chandni has on tap and from the first sip we know we’ve made the right decision. The menu offers all the standbys you would expect from an Indian restaurant plus several tempting chef’s specials that make our decisions all the more difficult.

41 DUL_JAN_Food_Review.indd 41

palette while my companion opts for the Murgh Badami, a curried chicken dish in an almond sauce. Being slightly braver than I, she asks for a little heat to be added and her request is immediately agreed to. We add to this a side of Pilau rice and wait in anticipation for our food to arrive. This does not take long at all, however and soon we are tucking into some truly scrumptious curry. My Butter Chicken, despite its mildness, is full of flavour and the sauce is creamy and rich. The Murgh Badami, my friend informs me, is subtle with the delicate flavour of the almonds contrasting well with the heat from the chilis. We mop up the sauce with incredibly tasty garlic naans and a few more papadums all washed down with our delectable Mongoose beer. By the time we had finished our mains we were full up to the brim - too full to try any of the yummy-sounding desserts but on the plus side, this gives us the perfect excuse to return to Chandni. Tasty food, ambient atmosphere and an all round delightful experience, Chandni is the perfect place to grab a really delicious meal with a friend. u

XXXXXX / XXXXXXX WELLNESS

ALL CHANGE If the festive season has left you with a muffin top and a perpetual hangover, an in:spa retreat is the perfect detox break Wo r d s A l e x a n d r a J o n e s

T

o give you a sense of what you’re dealing with, I’ll begin with a few admissions. Firstly, I never really ‘got’ yoga. It seemed to me a hobby that people who never exercise take up to make themselves feel better about not exercising. Secondly, sugar has been a ruling force in my life ever since I discovered the joys of the school vending machine; because really, what’s better than a 4pm snack of two Mars bars and a packet of Maltesers? This appreciation - some would call it an addiction - has dogged me through my whole podgyaround-the-middle life. It was something that I had resigned myself to: I would always, always be the person who ate a second dessert and skipped spinning. It’s just how I was made. The idea of in:spa, then, intrigued me. The company offers week-long detox retreats. You go along to a luxury location (be it villa, hotel or riad) in a sunsoaked country and, with a group of strangers (between 10 and 20), are schooled by a nutritionist, personal trainers, a yoga

CHIS_JAN_ Morocco.indd 44

instructor and a chef in the intricacies of health and wellbeing. There is a full timetable of exercises, including two hikes and two 5km runs and all meals are prepared by the chef who flies out with you. The retreat that I went to was in Morocco and while I’m not sure I learned anything groundbreaking about nutrition or exercise, I did learn a great deal about myself. In fact, if I were prone to hyperbole, I’d say this holiday changed my life. The riad itself, a few miles outside Marrakech, was picture postcard perfect. On the first night, the group of twelve nervously eyed one another across the main atrium and Mel – the nutritionist who had flown out with us from the UK - explained that we had as much opportunity to explore as we wanted. ‘Above all else, this is a holiday, none of the activities are compulsory,’ she assured us. Everyone, however, seemed game enough; the group was made up entirely of women, a doctor and an ambulance driver amongst them, barring one man, a burned out entrepreneur escaping too many hours in the office. Each day we’d partake in a programme that included at least an hour of yoga and

TRAVEL / MOROCCO THE feeling of ACHIEVEMENT was INCREDIBLE two to three hours of aerobic exercise in the form of fitness classes run by a personal trainer. All of which would be supplemented with one-on-one tutoring in food and fitness. This, I quickly discovered, did not mean hardcore workouts at 5am. There was no military style shouting and for real fitness fanatics in:spa probably isn’t the right way to go. The earliest you rise is 7am, for a 5km run which you can walk, if you like. I ran, it was the first time I’d run 5km in my life and the feeling of achievement was few days without sugar certainly left me craving something sweet. Things like portion control or how each meal should be balanced (50% greens and vegetables, 25% carb, 25% protein) are dealt with in no nonsense, group sessions with the nutritionist. On the one hand these sessions don’t necessarily cover new territory, but they certainly hammer home the basic facts that you blithely ignore when you pick a packet of crisps over carrot sticks. There are also oneon-one sessions with the nutritionist that are designed to be as specific as possible incredible. For those of middling ability (me) who go to the gym sporadically, but have a desire to go more, in:spa will work like a balm on your motivation levels. You’re not going to leave transformed but you will be inspired to try. All meals are eaten en masse and (apart from dinner) in a buffet style where you help yourself. Food throughout the week is treated with a lot of positivity: the focus is very much on what you can have. For breakfast this means quite a lot: eggs, fruit, gluten-free buckwheat pancakes, vegan bircher muesli, all delicious. Ditto lunch, think chargrilled chicken, homemade hummus, carrot salad with raisins and tamarind dressing. For both of these meals you’re invited to go for two helpings, three, if you really want. The only restrictions come around dinner time; dinner is two small courses with little flexibility in portion size. Of course you can request more, but then that’s sort of defeating the point. I can’t say that I was hungry, though those first

MARRAKECH PALMERIE to helping each individual achieve their goal. Very few people in the group seemed to be there to lose weight, and in:spa as a company certainly don’t make any claims to helping you shed pounds. Rather the approach is more holistic - each person’s needs are assessed before the meeting, then the nutritionist doles out advice on a case by case basis. Predictably, my addiction to sugar was the main topic

47 CHIS_JAN_ Morocco.indd 47

under discussion. ‘If you can go without it for three weeks, your habit will be broken,’ explained Mel. Three weeks to break the habit of a lifetime? I didn’t quite believe her, but after the first few days, when the cravings had subsided, I was willing to give it a try. Nine months since the retreat there are things that, irrespective of how beneficial they were at the time, I haven’t been able to stick with. No alcohol, for example. In the most part though, I am sugar free and exercise more than I ever have done at any other time in my life. The genius of in:spa is that everything on offer is absolutely top notch: advice from a wonderful team. Food from an exceptional chef. Accommodation in a beautiful setting. At the very least you’ll leave with the kind of deep sense of calm that only seven nights of blissful sleep will give you. And at most, you could end up like me, not wholly transformed, but certainly more believing in your own ability to change. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. u

reason, the breakfast bar was essential. My reality has fallen slightly short and I had begun to think no such place actually existed in London... and then I saw NEO Bankside. Located within spitting distance of London Bridge station, a stones throw from the Globe Theatre and some other short, whimsical measure of distance from the river, these towering apartment buildings offer both an enviable view of the city and an embarrassment of riches

53 Dulwich_Dec_NEO_BANKSIDE_v2.indd 53

Neo Bankside has a JEWEL in its already ORNATE CROWN

Wo r d s R o s e n o e l hen I was at school, I had a vision of the kind of place I would live in when I moved to London and became a film star (before the inevitable move to L.A., prompted by my meteoric success). It would be on the river, spacious and light and full of the latest mod cons. And there would be a breakfast bar. For some

in terms of eateries and shops. As if this were not enough, NEO Bankside has a jewel in its already ornate crown: three penthouses, each designed by a different world class designer, the least expensive of which comes in at a cool ÂŁ6.7m. All this makes my desire to take a peek at inside all the more potent but as I step into the glass lift which whizzes up the building, offering panoramic views of the Southbank, it occurs to me that this may not be the best housing choice for someone who suffers from vertigo. I

emerge on the 10th floor a little dizzy and take a moment to collect myself before following my guides into the penthouse. I am being shown around by Georgie Green, account manager at Purple PR for the development and Clio Astolfi, Sales Executive for Native Land. They have elected to take me on a tour of the penthouse designed by Studio Reed, the highest valued of the three at ÂŁ19.75m and, in my opinion, the most stunning. We walk through reassuringly heavy

HOME & INTERIORS / DESIGN doors into an atrium, through another set of doors and then into what has to be one of the most striking living spaces I have ever seen. Despite the impressive furniture and sheer size of the place, the first thing that hits me is the view. St. Paul's Cathedral is right there. I'm no tourist but this was some seriously exciting stuff. The penthouse is 7,080 sq ft in all with interior design by Studio Reed and architecture by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. It is unsurprising therefore that the impression of space is a strong one, emphasized by the enormous slanted windows and an open plan approach to the sitting and dining areas. Attention to detail seems to have been a huge factor and as I am lead through the four

bedrooms, walk-in wardrobes, study and bathrooms I am struck by individual elements as well as the overall flow. A side-board, for instance, that is half modern sculpture, half furniture and a table in the entry way that when closely examined turns out to be Battersea Power Station emitting a billowing cloud of gold smoke particularly catch my eye. Clio and Georgie point out features that they love as we walk through, including the chainmail curtains that adorn one room. Studio Reed's vision is clear throughout; this penthouse is intended to be something aesthetically arresting but nonetheless, comfortable and easy to live in. The fabrics are luxurious, carpets thick and nooks housing squishy sofas abound. This is after all, not an art gallery but a home.

Fitting into the uber-luxe niche that has grown up around the Southbank, NEO Bankside offer something unique. The buyers they attract are undoubtedly an exclusive bunch but with neighbouring developments selling appartments for ÂŁ100m a pop, they are perhaps occupying a slightly more reasonable bracket. Artistry and meticulous care have been taken to create a rarified atmosphere and though it may only be a fantasy, as I leave I can't help but picture myself standing on the sweeping terrace, glass of Merlot in hand, gazing out over the river. I guess I'll just have to wait for my big break. u

Cracking code

Since September 2014, ‘coding’ has replaced ICT (information and communications technology) on the new National Curriculum Wo r d s A m a n d a C o n s ta n c e

I

n its simplest terms, coding is telling a computer what you want it to do. This involves typing in step-by-step commands for the computer to follow. It’s often likened to learning a foreign language and it’s certainly double-Dutch to most parents. But in a world where coding powers our digital world, where every website, smartphone app, computer program, calculator and even microwave relies on code in order to operate, we all – but particularly children - need to understand it. The coders of the future will be the architects and builders of the digital age. Kathryn Parsons, chief executive and co-founder of Decoded, a company in the heart of east London’s Tech City which runs Code in a Day courses, says: 'We desperately need digital creators – talent – for the UK to be a global player in tech. Coding is the new building block for the world. There are lots of intelligent, young people out there but only a fraction of them are learning to code on the web. Bringing coding alive is essential, not just in the classroom but also by parents sitting down with their kids and learning together. Whether you are six or 60, this has a place in everyone’s lives. Coding is the new literacy.' In west London, two enterprising women are bringing coding into the classrooms of Notting Hill. BlueSHIFT Coding was set up by Heather Lyons, a web designer and Elizabeth Tweedale, an architect, designer and computer scientist. Both have young children and a missionary zeal to get kids coding. 'Our aim is to enable young people to become creative users of technology

CODERS OF THE FUTURE will be the ARCHITECTS and BUILDERS of a DIGITAL AGE rather than passive consumers,” says Tweedale, a 30-year-old American. 'We are not trying to create a nation of computer scientists but in future we all need to have some understanding of computation,' she says. BlueSHIFT Coding is already running classes at Chepstow House School, Wetherby and Falcon School for Girls, as well as after-school courses at the company’s studio in Monmouth Road, and will be launching new classes in Kensal Rise after Christmas. Tweedale and Lyons have developed their own approach to teaching code to children between the ages of 5-12. Tweedale explains that, traditionally, computer science has only been taught

61 CHIS_JAN_Education.indd 61

at university level and the teaching for younger children has often been a 'watered down' version. 'That just doesn’t work for children,' she says. 'It’s too slow. Have you ever seen a three-year-old work an iPad? They’re so quick, they aren’t held back by preconceived ideas.' BlueSHIFT Coding is all about 'taking creativity in all forms in order for children to solve problems', says Tweedale. She describes a favourite project in the lessons– ‘Teddy Hacking’. This is when the children bring in old, no longer loved soft toys and turn them into robots by adding sensors, LEDs and other micro-controls. It’s great fun. “The huge challenge is finding teachers that can teach this,” says Tweedale. From now on, KS1 (Key Stage1) children will have to understand core elements of computer science, while those in KS2 must be able to understand and edit code and KS3 pupils must learn to be able to write their own code. At the latter stages, the teacher will need training in computer science. There is currently a huge shortage, Tweedale says. Despite the dearth of qualified teachers there are plenty of initiatives for keen coders. Founders4Schools recently held an Appathon UK to get students to design and create an app prototype – the top three were then coded by university students and the winners were presented with their winning apps in the House of Commons last November. And Code Club, a nationwide network of volunteer-led after school coding clubs, now has more than 2,000 clubs up and running. u blueshiftcoding.com

’m not sure anyone ever sets out to be an estate agent when they are young, but as I come from a family of sales people, I suppose a role in sales was always calling. I have worked in a sales environment from the tender age of 16, when I got my first job on reception at MercedesBenz of a weekend. From that moment on, I just loved working. I guess it was there that I started my sales education; I thrived on the variety that it offered and I enjoyed interacting with the general public. I am now ten years into my estate agency career, with eight of these at Hamptons and I can honestly say I still enjoy working in property. No one day is ever the same as the next and the satisfaction I get when we find the right property for the right person still exists. Having grown up in North Kent and with all my family coming from South East London, Greenwich has always been a constant in my life; whether it was bank holiday Mondays spent in the park as a child, shopping at the market on a Sunday or dining with friends on a Saturday night, I have always felt an affiliation with the area. So when Hamptons announced they were opening in Greenwich, I knew straight away this was my next port of call in agency. You will now find me here the majority of the week and I couldn’t be happier!

aving worked in the property industry for 15 years in areas as diverse as Battersea, Hampstead and most recently in the City, where I opened the office for Hamptons five years ago, I’m delighted to now be opening another new office in an area as exciting and varied as Greenwich. With a huge range of properties from large detached houses to smaller terraced Victorian houses, modern riverside apartments and one bedroom flats, the area attracts a whole range of different buyers from first-time buyers to families, pied-a-terre buyers to investors, as well as numerous overseas buyers drawn to the area due to it’s abundance of monuments, historic attractions, and the Greenwich market. Growing up in South London, I remember days spent playing in Greenwich Park, exploring the Observatory and Maritime Museum and hopping over the meridian line. As an adult, I spend weekends exploring the numerous shops and boutiques in and around the market and high street, drinking in pubs like The Trafalgar, The Cutty Sark and the Greenwich Tavern. Having both the Overground and DLR is incredibly useful for getting access into London and the surrounding areas, and the fact that we share buyers and properties with our Blackheath office means we can offer our buyers and sellers twice the exposure.

300 YEARS of the Georgians Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S

a celebration of georgian architecture

This year we’ve all been remembering those who died during the First World War, however 2014 is the anniversary of a less famous but happier event – the 300-year anniversary of London’s Georgian homes, which were built from 1714 until the 1790s. It started with the arrival of George I, the first of four Georges, who heralded a period of architectural revolution as London embraced several generations of architects all obsessed with the order of Palladian architecture. This included familiar names including Wren, Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, Nash, Soane, Holland and the Adam brothers – designers who all, along with many imitators, brought a new and distinctive look to London. Georgian, though, is not a precise term. Pure Georgian architecture began with a Palladian influenced style that ran from 1714 to 1760 but was then followed by the Adam period (named after Scottish brothers Robert and James Adam) until the 1790s, after which the Regency period began.

Symmetry

Order, symmetry and proportion frown down from the brick and stone of London’s Georgian properties as do their large sash windows (an innovation introduced by the

Georgians), railings and, if you’ve ventured inside one at any time in your life, their wood panelling and wide floorboards. At the moment the most fashionable Georgian area of London is Spitalfields, whose Hugenot-era houses were saved from being demolished by a group of enthusiasts during the 1970s and which have now become highly desirable and often authentically restored properties. But there’s plenty to choose from if you don’t want to live there. London experienced one of its most energetic bursts of expansion under the rule of the four Georges (helped by the availability of new build plots following the Great Fire of London in 1666) and by 1753 it had become larger than Constantinople, making it the biggest city in the world.

Perhaps the prettiest and most intact Georgian gem north of the Thames is Bedford Square, between Tottenham Court Road and the British Museum; an undisturbed piece of Georgian construction dating from the late 1770s. The most famous however is Canonbury Square in Islington; in large part because authors Evelyn Waugh and George Orwell once lived there. But while there’s history, owning a 300-year-old property comes with maintenance responsibilities. Georgian properties are well known for needing regular refurbishments as wooden door and window lintels lead to sagging apertures, roof trusses crumble after several centuries of duty and chimney stacks wobble as masonry fails. Despite German bombing and the frequent threat of demolition (especially when out of fashion), huge swathes of Georgian buildings still stand and North of the river Georgian properties run from Hyde Park to the City and up as far as Islington, which is still one of the bastions of this period's homes, as well as Highgate (which is home to Little Green Street, a wholly intact street built during the 1780s). Georgian London had less impact south of the river but made it to Clapham Old Town, which is full of the period’s signature flat-fronted, parapet-topped terraced streets. Despite the fact that we have lost a large amount of London’s Georgian property to demolition and destruction, what remains forms part of London’s history and character. On the 300th anniversary of London’s Georgian homes we can be confident that what is left is cherished and will be well looked after.

PROPERTY | NIGEL LEWIS

London's MOST POPULAR

Nigel Lewis, Absolutely's resident property writer, takes a look at London's most viewed property: 22 Lyndhurst Road, Hampstead

T

here are 58,596 properties listed for sale in London at the moment and at the time of writing this was the most viewed online of any of them. It’s also the most expensive house for sale in the capital although it’s not the dearest property – an apartment within One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge is currently listed at £64.9 million which, I know, is a lot of

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

NIGEL LEWIS DPS.indd 2

money for a five bedroom flat. Better value is to be had if you buy 22 Lyndhurst Road in Hampstead (it has a garden, for starters) as well as an interesting history. Over the past four years it has been owned by a high profile Russian oligarch who in turn bought it off a London property magnate. Both men have spent considerable sums doing the property up and the

86 18/12/2014 15:16

house now features a very high standard of interior finish. Highlights include an Ionic column-lined indoor swimming pool and a smaller outdoor pool too plus one of the grandest entrance halls in London, according to selling agent Grant Alexson of Knight Frank, in which a huge ornate stone fireplace stands sentinel. The property, which is on the market for £46.5 million, has been viewed on Zoopla by over 80,000 people since it came on the market in June this year. Such popularity would please the man who built this seven bedroom, six bathroom house in 1896 – Liberal Party MP and shipping millionaire Russell Rea, who twice made it into parliament representing both Gloucester and later South Shields. What he probably wouldn’t recognise

87 NIGEL LEWIS DPS.indd 3

are its interiors, which are distinctly modern. This includes what Grant Alexson describes as an opulently decorated ‘man cave’ cum office with wood panelling plus there’s a steam room, space for up to eight cars and a dining room that comfortably seats 18 people. What most buyers might find astounding is that such a large, 14,700 sq ft property with a carriage drive and half acre back garden is to be found in the busy streets between Hampstead and Belsize Park tube stations, both of which are a short walk from the house. But the area has, since it was first developed in the late 1860s, been a favoured spot for affluent Londoners looking for seclusion, civilisation and space away from the madness of central London. And anyone who thinks recent arrivals to the UK owning properties in this area is a new trend should remember that a wealthy Turkish diplomat once lived in nearby Rosslyn Lodge during the 1850s – a house that has sadly now been demolished. And a nice link to this delightful diplomat is that Knight Frank reckons the property to be ‘ambassadorial’, which indeed it could be – although the children’s slide that runs down from the property’s rear sun terrace to the garden reveals a cheekier, less serious side.
