ometimes when I’m putting together the magazine, I like to think of the places people will be when they read it. In July, I imagine that many readers will be sitting outside in the sunshine at a café, thumbing through the fashion shoot, lusting after the pretty floral dresses. Perhaps they’ll be at home packing, about to jet off on a European getaway for the weekend. Those picking it up in an estate agent’s office might be distracted from their house-hunting by our hunky lead interview or our brand spanking new men’s page. These are only guesses of course, but considering what we have in store this month, I’m pretty sure they’re well-founded. Just when you thought florals were out, they come storming back in as proven by our dreamy shoot this month on page 20, featuring Vilshenko, Jenny Packham and Nicholas Oakwell - oh, my. But where to wear these fabulous dresses? We can think of a few places – just take a peek at our European cities round-up on page 44. Choose between

edgy Amsterdam, vibrant Vienna and regal Rome for a weekend away to remember. Struggling to find a new favourite haunt this summer? We’ve discovered the best pop-ups South East London has to offer and compiled a guide on page 38 that will keep you sitting outside, beverage in hand, enjoying the summer sunshine all month. If the end of Game of Thrones Season 5 sent you into a tailspin of depression (as it did your editor) our interview with Kit Harington on page 12 should go some way to cheering you up – if only temporarily. Not a GoT fan? Then just enjoy the pictures. Wherever you’re reading this, I hope you enjoy the issue. Salut! u

GAME CHANGER Game of Thrones star Kit Harington gives us the scoop on swapping the sword for a gun Wo r d s F E R G U S E W B A N k
G
Bridging the gap between swordsman and spy is a supporting role in James Kent’s Testament of Youth, a movie based on the memoirs of legendary pacifist Vera Britain. In the film, Harington plays her first love, Roland Leighton, a poet and scholar who dies at just 20 years old on the battlefields. Young and naïve with short-cropped hair, his character is almost unrecognisable from real-life Harington who, for now, must wear his Jon Snow mane out of strict contractual obligation. While his hair remains long, his lips must stay sealed. Bound to secrecy by the producers, discussing Game of Thrones in any detail is dangerous territory. “It’s a hell of a thing to talk about when you’re trying to excite people about it but not give anything away,” he says, rubbing his temples wearily as he labours over what must be an oft-repeated disclaimer. “We’ve been sat down by HBO and warned what we can and cannot say, which really leaves a very small window. It’s literally terrifying!” Remaining tight-lipped is a price worth paying for what the role has brought him. It’s undeniable that, despite his significant acting chops, the other role Harington has taken on is that of heartthrob.
ame of Thrones is unavoidable. Whether you’re a fan who’s (SPOILER ALERT) still in mourning over Ygritte’s untimely demise or someone who will kill the next person to utter the phrase ‘You know nothing, Jon Snow’, there’s no denying it’s a phenomenon. Like Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones has joined a legion of shows with an incredibly vocal and dedicated fanbase that has launched their stars to stratospheric fame. Kit Harington is one such star, whose life has been changed dramatically by George R. R. Martin’s fantasy behemoth and to the softly spoken, Worcester-bred actor, the whole thing has come as a bit of a shock. Roles have flooded in since his small screen debut in 2011, with a small part in the yet to be released Seventh Son, opposite Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore and the lead in the epic Pompeii, which covered some familiar ground for Harington who looks at home with a sword in his hand. Keen to shed this image, however, the young actor’s most recent film role is set in World War I and there isn’t a sword in sight.

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW For many viewers, Jon Snow’s husky voice, soulful eyes and brooding demeanour have made him a fan favourite. This popularity was cemented last season with Snow’s adventures beyond the Wall (the dividing line between the uncivilised Wildling territory and the rest of the North of Westeros) which lead him to Ygritte, the smouldering Night Watchmen’s first love. If Harington stripping off in a cave wasn’t enough to ensure HARINGTON STRIKES A POSE IN POMPEII legendary status, the tragic moment when Ygritte was killed leaving Jon Snow heartbroken did the job. The fact that he and Rose Leslie, the actress who portrayed Ygritte, are a real life on-again, off-again couple just adds to the intrigue. Now in the middle of producing the fifth season, Game of Thrones draws millions of devoted fans around the world. As its popularity has snowballed, Harington has been able to pay off student debts and important to step out and do something purchase his North London flat – also that was more character-driven.” known as ‘The Flat That Thrones Built’. This wasn’t helped by Pompeii which None of this seems to have diminshed was, unfortunately, a critical disaster and Harington’s enthusiasm and excitement which didn’t do Harington any favours. however. Indeed, working with Bridges However, it seems redemption is at and Moore in Seventh Son, Harington was hand: the young actor’s performance careful not to appear star-struck. “I was in Testament of Youth has done much stunned by the fact it was the first time to shake off this failure. He looks they’d been in the same film together unrecognisable in his role as a 19-year-old since The Big Lebowski, which is one of my soldier in a film that movingly portrays all-time favourite films,” the actor smiles. the horrors of war and the harrowing “It’s weird how that worked out; years ago loss of a generation. Vera Britain’s is a I was watching them as Maude and The tale that Harington studied at school and, Dude, now I’m in a movie with them!” being familiar with the poetry of the First Sharing the screen with such highly World War, he found himself researching revered actors undoubtedly marks an for the part with a vested interest. “I had important juncture in Harington’s career. read Testament of Youth the book, but The film is one that he cites as “an I had never read the letters,” he says. incredible learning experience”, albeit “Letters from a Lost Generation is literally within a genre he hopes he can begin to the back and forth of letters between distance himself from. As a fantasy film, the actor’s place in Seventh Son poses the risk of a certain typecastcasting the actor is eager to avoid: the sword that has sat so comfortably in his hand throughout Game of Thrones has become a doubleedged one for the actor. “People see you in these parts and they say ‘he’s doing well in this, he’d therefore be good in my period piece’,” he admits. “As good as some of these movies were, I didn’t want to be that person. “The industry still sees me now as something I’d never have predicted – as an action hero, in the Jon Snow mould. So, I have to find other things for my own HARINGTON AS JON SNOW, HIS BREAKOUT ROLE IN GAME OF THRONES sanity, to break out of it. For me it was

Roland and Vera as well as her brother, Edward. That gave me a huge insight into who these people were. “I've been to the war graves in Northern France twice and you only have to walk around to see the majority who died were 20 or 21. I even came across a grave of a 15-year-old. That never escaped me, their youth. It is poignant, how innocent these young men were.” Testament of Youth does a fine job of highlighting the sense of misplacement that existed during the war in a country so driven by notions of the greater good and the need for national heroism. Swept up in the romanticism of being a hero, Harington’s character becomes committed to a cause that, ultimately, he begins to disbelieve. This may sound like familiar territory to those who have been following Jon Snow’s journey this season and yet, the two performances remain entirely separate from one another. At no point do you expect a White Walker to appear on the fields of the Somme. Though, for some audiences, the sword may look more natural than the gun, Harington’s role in Testament of Youth, as well as the more contemporary Spooks, points to an actor more than capable of leaving Westeros behind. Its the rest of the world that may have a little more trouble letting go...u

There is one irrefutable leader when it comes to the creation of covetable swimwear, and that’s the Australians. With more warm weather than you can shake a stick at, it’s no wonder the Aussies have got beachwear glam sussed. Our brand á la moment is luxury label JETS from designer Jessika Allen. JETS’ latest range Ω the Preview ’15 collection Ω boasts a premium line of swimwear and resortwear (from £64) made from nylon microfibre Lycra® which is then crafted using precision-cut tailoring. Given the label’s signature is strong silhouettes, line play is a recurrent theme, as colour blocking, bold graphic prints and flashes of neon work to enhance the female form. The lined mesh panel range, Parallel, comes in flattering hues of saturated tomato and cobalt. Allen also taps into the sports luxe trend and offers crop top cut bikinis, proving that shortsleeved one-pieces and sun shirts can be sexy. (Though, models Hannah Saul and Melinda Kemp do a good job at convincing us.) All in all, it's best to do as the Preview ’15 collection suggests and, “Listen to your intuition.” So head to Selfridges online and treat yourself to JETS pieces now. u

aving heard great things about the Venus Freeze and researched both it’s background, how it works and other radio frequency machines on the market, I contacted the company, Venus Concept in London to go and trial the treatment with a friend. The technology of the Venus Freeze uses radio frequency and magnetic pulse technology, which combined make the treatment very comfortable and more effective than other radio frequency treatments. Together they create a heating under the skin. The heat within the lower region of the skin causes a healing response. This response stimulates collagen and elastin production (which form the framework of support, that starts to deplete as we get older). The presence of collagen and elastin keep the skin looking firm and youthful. The results, even from one session on the face, were noticeable both to my friend and to me. Her skin was so much firmer, especially around the ‘jowly’ area and the eyes appeared more open as the area above the eyes had ‘pulled up’ slightly. The overall effect was a natural looking, more youthful, firmer appearance. I had the treatment done myself following my friend and again was impressed at the ‘plumping up’ effect it had on my face and the smoother appearance of the neck area too. The effects lasted a day or two, but about midway through the course of treatments the effects begin to stay past the two- day mark and become more long lasting. A course of 6-8 weekly sessions is recommended for the best, lasting results. Thereafter, maintenance treatments are only required every 2-3 months. ◆

ulum is the secret getaway for the New York fashion crowd, who flock to this Mexican bohemian beach resort in their voguish thousands. Aedes de Venustas’s co-founder Karl Bradl worked with perfumer extraordinaire, Bertrand Duchaufour, to create a fragrance that evokes the copal incense that is burned in this town on the Yucatán Peninsula. The resulting Copal Azur [01] is a bright whirl of breezy ozone notes and resinous piny incense. New this month, and also inspired by the Yucatán Peninsula, Palo Santo from Carner Barcelona [02] is named after the indigenous local tree, the fallen wood of which is also used as an incense. Top notes of artemisia and rum, dance around creamy middle notes of milk, guaiac wood and

tonka bean, on a base of vetiver, vanilla and sandalwood. Pichola from Neela Vermeire [03] is a celebration of the lake that sits alongside of the princely and elegant city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. As opulent as the city itself, Pichola is bursting with elegant floral notes (magnolia, orange blossom, rose, tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang), exotic spices (cardamom, cinnamon, saffron) and precious sandalwood. Creed’s Virgin Island Water [04] is a delicious cocktail of coconut and lime, crystal clear sea lapping at the hull of your schooner as you gently glide through the Caribbean paradise. Salina is a small island that sits off the north coast of Sicily; it is also the name of a delightful salty scent by brilliant Italian brand Laboratorio Olfattivo [05]. Salina is a total sensory immersion; whisking you away to a sun drenched shore. You can taste the salt on your lips; feel the ozone in your lungs and the dappled sunlight on your skin, as the rays penetrate the green pines of the forests that lead you down, through fragrant coastal flora, to the azure of the sea. Once on Capri you will find a perfumery started by Carthusian monks. Fiori di Capri [06] was the first Carthusia fragrance. The Mediterranean wisps of wild carnation, lily of the valley and oak combine with the
31 DUL_July15_Perfume.indd 31
exotic amber, sandalwood and ylang ylang in a beautiful, almost breath-taking aroma – much like the stunning island itself. Or check out Mediterraneano, as worn by a certain Mr George Clooney. Lemon leaves and delicate tones of green tea. Super sophisticated. Hierbas De Ibiza [06] is another fresh scent, full of the aroma of the Mediterranean party-island. Created in the hippy, pre-hedonism years of the mid 1960s, Hierbas De Ibiza is a classic Eau de Cologne that speaks of golden sands and endless sunshine. A little closer to home, Cap d’Antibes [07], the new scent from Eight and Bob, is as elegant as the titular town; opening with fresh, addictive and natural notes of mint and violet leaves. It is enhanced by intense spicy accords of cinnamon. The sensuality of moss is blended with aromatic and green accords followed by elegant woods. The presence of warm cedar and sandalwood united with incense and vanilla brings an intense serenity and unique style. Happy holidays. ◆

ack in season and full of flavour, a great way to make the most of the new beetroot crop is to boost the flavour of falafel. Although beetroot can taste sweet it has also an earthiness to it, which is why the Pinot Noir grape makes a great match. It might seem surprising, but the reputation of Bulgarian Pinot Noir is on the rise and it’s thanks to wines like this one. Its lovely strawberry juiciness and delicate earthy character works perfectly with the cumin and beetroot in the falafel. Soli Pinot Noir 2011, £9.99; thewinesociety.com ◆ B

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW BEEF WITH SALMON roe may seem unusual to THE UNTRAINED EYE, but is essentially AN INNOVATIVE take on the CLASSIC SURF ‘N’ TURF
Craft London
Tom Dixon and Stevie Parle bring beautiful design and delicious food to Greenwich Wo r d s C at h e r i n e h a l e s
U
ntil recently Greenwich was the place you’d travel to only if you had tickets for a gig at the O2. But now, the area is transforming into a foodie paradise, and the recent addition of Craft London is full confirmation of that. British product designer Tom Dixon and bright young chef Stevie Parle have teamed up once again to create culinary magic with Craft London. The pair first collaborated in 2009 below Dixon’s HQ in Ladbroke Grove with their pop-up The Dock Kitchen, which is now a permanent fixture in West London. In similar style to the duo’s first restaurant, Craft London is light, airy and
minimal. Housed within a glass structure just a stone’s throw from North Greenwich tube, the decor is every bit Tom Dixon. Strong copper accents harmonise with deep cobalt blue walls and chairs. Retro booths offer comfy intimacy for larger groups, while smaller tables fan out and offer an impressive view over the peninsula. Quite by accident, my friend and I had booked in on a night when Fleetwood Mac were playing at the 02 (a bitter reminder that we had missed out on tickets), so the restaurant was packed and dynamic. The menu is British and while much of the food is produced in-house (they cure their own meat) anything they can’t produce is sourced from trusted local suppliers. We started our meal with scallops, pickled
37 DUL_JULY15_Food_Review.indd 37
mussels and clams that came served on four grain parsley porridge and chopped highland beef served with dripping pear, crisps and salmon roe. The scallop (singular) was surprisingly enormous and fresh but, while it was not overcooked, was slightly flaky in texture. The porridge was similar to a risotto in form and gave the dish more substance. The beef with salmon roe may seem unusual to the untrained eye, but is essentially an innovative take on the classic surf ‘n’ turf. The sweetness of the pear enhanced the salty roe and when paired with the tender and blushing beef made for a winning combination. For my main I chose the Ross chicken, bone broth and curd dumpling with ramson emulsion, pickled Alexanders, pork scratchings and a Kombucha egg. A busy plate, but the expert cooking techniques and high quality ingredients made it work. My companion opted for the lamb ‘hogget’, turnips, anchovy and spelt. The lamb was cooked to pink perfection and the turnips brought a satisfying earthiness to the dish. The stand-out pudding was the deconstructed goat’s curd and sorrel cheesecake. Yum. In short, even without tickets to see Fleetwood Mac, Craft London is well worth the trip. u

This year, it doesn't matter whether you’re after an outdoor cinema, theatre, street food festival or rooftop bar, we can pretty much guarantee there’s a local pop-up for you. Keeping tabs on what’s popping up and coming down can be tricky so to help we’ve scoured high and low for the best, most delicious, entertaining and creative pop-ups in SE this summer. Just remember, they’re flighty by nature so won’t be around for long. The trick to ticking off this bucket list is to make the most out of the longer evenings, grab your friends and gorge yourself on whatever each one has to offer. u

EURO TRIP
These terrific European weekend breaks prove you don’t have to travel far to end up worlds away
ROME
SPOTLIGHT ON
Real Roman food and culture hy is it that when in Rome we immediately head to the Trevi and the Colosseum? That’s not what the Romans do. This city is not only steeped in ancient history but culinary culture too. Make a point of seeing both sides and it’s impossible to leave disappointed. W

S E E . For art, the Galleria Borghese is a brilliant alternative to the crowded Vatican Museum. Limiting the number of visitors allowed inside, you are given just two hours to explore. Stay on the move and you’ll see works by Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini. If architectural spectacle is what you’re after, venture 45 minutes out of Rome to the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli. Built during the 2nd century, this archaeological site was once a hub of power and includes the remains of the famous Maritime Theatre.
This CITY is not only steeped in
ANCIENT HISTORY but CULINARY CULTURE too S TAY. Just 15 minutes from the city, the Rome Cavalieri is the perfect base for exploration. Offering the tranquility of a resort, hotel highlights include the La Prairie Grand Spa, outdoor pools and a record-breaking multi-million pound art collection. While the entire hotel is on the swanky side, you can’t beat the luxury found in the hotel’s 25 suites. In the penthouse you’ll find original Warhol prints, a rare marble and malachite hydro-massage bathroom with Swarovski crystal fixtures, and a private roof terrace where the twinkling panoramic view includes the Vatican. Relentlessly passionate about food, the Cavalieri is also home to the only 3 Michelin starred restaurant in Rome, La Pergola. Run by Heinz Beck, the food here is something else. His famous fagottelli is an unconventional pasta dish that sees creamy carbonara sauce encased within the parcels rather than poured on top. G O . Every restaurant in Rome claims to serve the best Italian food so do your research before heading out. We found real Roman fare at the authentic neighbourhood trattoria, Osteria dell’Angelo. Full of Italians drinking local wine and eating homemade pasta it’s worth booking a table in advance. For Roman cuisine without the foreplaning, we recommend a food safari with Eating Italy (eatingitalyfoodtours. com). Taking you through the foodie neighbourhood of Testaccio, this guided tour lets you escape the crowds and experience the city like a local – on foot. One thing you must try en route is the suppì from Trapizzino: these deep fried balls of saucy risotto contain an oozing chunk of mozzarella. Devilishly good. u Elizabeth Hutton

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP VIENNA SPOTLIGHT ON
Retail therapy and decadent balls ienna can now add shopping destination to its already impressive offering of baroque and gothic architecture, outrageous charity balls and famous hotels, making it the ideal city break this summer. V
S E E . Vienna is a historically and culturally rich city and, with the exception of the Belvedere Gallery (permanent home to the works of Gustav Klimt) and the Central Cemetery (even more permanent home to Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert), most of this history can be found in the First District. Enlist a tour guide to take you on a walking tour and you will notice the wide streets, completely devoid of litter and the air, free from smog, courtesy of a healthy breeze blowing off the Danube. They will undoubtedly lead you past the impressive, crescent-shaped Hofburg Imperial Palace, former home of the Habsburgs and stop off at the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an epic Gothic edifice with a stunning tiled roof that bears the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna. If walking seems like too much effort, hail a fiaker (the Viennese horse and carts that throng the First District) for a leisurely excursion around the city centre. If shopping is the main priority, the newly built Golden Quarter, located off Am Hof Square is a must-visit. Signa Group’s latest project manages to pay tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage Site it inhabits with tasteful and uniform signage and top-end brands, from Valentino to Vivienne Westwood, not to mention remarkable luxury apartments and office spaces with breathtaking views.
S TAY. The Park Hyatt Vienna is hard to beat in the hotel stakes. Located in the picturesque Am Hof Square, the Park Hyatt opened in June 2014 and has quickly established itself as one of the city’s places to be seen. What with 143 luxurious rooms (including 35 suites), the fully kitted out Arany Spa housing the largest indoor swimming pool in Vienna and The Bank, the hotel’s exceptional restaurant, even walking out of the front door is a wrench. The decor is in tune with the historic roots of the building, formerly a bank, with seams of mother of pearl running through it and luxurious natural materials such as onyx from Iran and marble from Italy dominating the rooms and common areas. Those looking to enjoy a drink of an evening can keep it traditional in the hotel’s Lounge where cigar smoking and whisky drinking is par for the course or head down to Pearl, the more contemporary bar that spills out onto the street. G O . Vienna is known for the lavish balls that make up its social season and although the Life Ball does not fit into the traditional category (you won’t need to learn to waltz to have a good time) it has become a fixture in the city since the first event was organised by Gary Kessler with the help of some famous friends in 1993. It is now the largest charity ball in Europe and raises hundreds of thousands
45 NH_June15_Euro_Getaway_3pager.indd 45
If shopping is A PRIORITY the newly built GOLDEN QUARTER is a mustvisit of pounds to fight HIV and AIDS every year. The theme for 2015 was ‘Gold’ and in standard flamboyant fashion, the red carpet was awash with gold-bedecked revellers, some wearing little more than body paint and others kitted out in golden bondage gear and chains. The Opening Ceremony featured fire and tributes being brought up to the stage, which were received by dancers dressed as Klimt paintings. Bizarre and wonderful celebrity appearances included Charlize Theron, Sean Penn and Dita von Teese with musical performances from Mary J Blige, Sophie Ellis Bextor and, of course, Conchita Wurst. A wonderful, surreal, outlandish and fabulous event, the Life Ball shows Vienna at its best. u Catherine Hales

TRAVEL / ROUND-UP Since luxury is the ESSENCE OF THIS TRIP splash out on an exclusive private BOAT TRIP in a city where space is at a premium. Don’t miss the afternoon tea, which offers a Nordic twist on the British tradition (smoked eel puffs; foie gras and beetroot), and take note of the staff’s beautiful uniforms, designed by Franc Fernandez, of Lady Gaga’s meat dress fame.
AMSTERDAM SPOTLIGHT ON
Dutch luxe
msterdam is an obvious choice for a short city break. It’s quicker to get to than Edinburgh, smaller and more manageable than Paris and absolutely everyone speaks English. A
S E E . The fantastic Rijksmuseum reopened in 2013 after a 10-year closure and the new arrangement is truly magnificent, adding a stylish modern below-ground level atrium and liberating lots of previously paintedover frescoes. Curators have rearranged works according to century, instead of separating paintings from ceramics and so on. The audioguides offer a good selection of tours including a highlights one that takes in all the predictable essentials (Rembrand’s Nightwatch, Vermeer’s Milkmaid) as well as the wonderful dolls house room, unmissable for anyone who has read The Miniaturist. There’s also a lovely 20th century gallery right at the top of the building, as well as a brilliant souvenir shop.
S TAY. Amsterdam hasn’t traditionally been known for its lavishness; more for its informality, tolerance and laid-back charm. So with last year’s opening of a new Waldorf Astoria hotel on the Herengracht, the potential for luxury has stepped up a notch, and the city’s most luxe rooms (and its most expensive) can now be found in a fabulous canalside location within easy walking distance of the Rembrandplein, the Hermitage and everywhere really. There are lots of striking things about the hotel, which is made up of six 17th century townhouses knocked together to create a sprawling, 93-room residence that boasts not only the city’s biggest private garden but also an insanely luxurious Guerlain spa, an exclusive two-Michelin star restaurant and a separate all-day brasserie (named Goldfinch, nodding to both Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel’s Amsterdam setting and the hotel’s arty connections) and a fabulous underground cocktail bar (the building is a former bank and this is the vault; you can still see the old safe boxes, some of them mysteriously locked). Ask for a room with a canal view and appreciate the spacious dimensions
47 NH_June15_Euro_Getaway_3pager.indd 47
G O . For a feel of contemporary Amsterdam, try Hotel Droog, (Staalstraat 7B, hoteldroog.com) a conceptual multi-identity space that’s part gallery, part restaurant, part hotel as well as a performance space, yoga studio and design shop. Eat at the Plantaage, (Plantage Kerklan 36, caferestaurantdeplantage.nl) a spacious and stylish eaterie near the zoo (watch the flamingos from the terrace). And since luxury is the essence of this trip, splash out on an exclusive private boat trip with Classic Boat Dinners (classicboatdinners.nl) whose flamboyant captain Nico Bax will entertain you with endless stories as you cruise the canals, stopping off at the city’s top restaurants to pick up different courses at each, before dropping you back at the Waldorf Astoria to be met by the cashmere capeclad doormen. u Pendle Harte

This week 77 intrepid Year 10 girls from Bromley High School set out on their practice Duke of Edinburgh Award Exhibition – several days of rough-sleeping and bonding on long walks and over campfires ahead of them. f the idea of a children’s ‘issue’ I book sends a chill over you, then Albert and Little Henry will change your mind. This is an absolutely enchanting and moving book which, let’s hope, children will love whether or not its central theme of coping with a young sibling is relevant to them or not. I defy anyone – adult or child – not to be affected when Albert perceives himself to be shrinking due to all the attention being lavished on Little Henry. The importance of reading and story-telling, too, is beautifully woven into the story making this a must-read. ◆

Do I need to employ an agent or consultant? rivate education is increasingly becoming a P luxury and an investment. Ensuring that you are receiving value for money and a sufficient return is not only prudent but will alleviate any anxieties you may have about your child’s progress. With their in-depth knowledge of independent schools, educational consultants identify what academic structure and environment will best support your offspring and encourage them to thrive. Bonas MacFarlane leads the way on this and is unique in providing a mentoring programme following the placement. This closely monitors your child’s progress throughout their school career, maximising all opportunities and pushing the pupil to realise their potential. A note of warning: it is wise to be aware of rogue agents. Having sprung up from business ability rather than experience and an organic interest in the British education system, agents are frequently driven by fee-taking agreements made with schools. As such, when choosing a consultant reputation should be tantamount to ensure first class results. u

arking about with horses at school might seem to be the sole preserve of smart girls at public school with hair as glossy as their pony’s manes, but horses are trotting into schools in surprising places. Equine therapy, or more specifically Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an established practice in the US that is gaining popularity here. EAL aims to enable children to achieve educational goals by interacting with horses, particularly pupils who find it hard to engage with mainstream schooling such as those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Its sister therapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses similar, often one-on-one techniques to help and heal many groups of people, such as traumatised children, sufferers of PTSD and recovering addicts. They are even using it for treatments at the Priory. Last November, as part of National Anti-Bullying Week, groups of London school pupils aged between 12-15 years old were able to work with shire horses in Hyde Park alongside EAL therapist Dr Andreas Liefooghe. “Humans can learn a lot from watching horses,” says Dr Andreas Liefooghe. The main aim of the programme was to teach teenagers co-operative group work and inclusion rather than competition and exclusion. The children learnt to interact with the animals through observing their responses and communicating non-verbally, learning valuable lessons about themselves and teamwork along the way. EAL is proving particularly valuable for children with issues such as ADHD, autism and attachment disorders. Children with SEN can learn about themselves and others, processing and discussing feelings and behaviour patterns they may struggle to articulate. Treatments can be gentle, introductory sensory techniques, such as grooming or petting a horse, or even decorating it with paint. The benefits of sensory work are profound, involving fine motor skills, verbal communication and social interaction.
59 Chiswick_JULY15_Education.indd 59
The reason EAL works so well, says Rosie Edwards, who runs the charity Learning Through Horses, is that “Horses are like mirrors – they reflect the emotions around them, whether excitement, anger, joy or sadness.” Edwards offers EAL courses for pupils in London schools; working with six pupils at a time, she teaches them the basics of horsewhispering – training horses using body language. This requires “fine-tuned” control and observation techniques, says Edwards. Most importantly, “in order to train horses, students must get control of their own emotions”. Edwards sees the difference EAL makes right in front of her eyes. “Most pupils are referred to us because of challenging behaviour but we see very little of it here,” she says. “Plus the threat of getting kicked in the head is a little more real,” she laughs. Edwards also notes that pupils renowned for non-attendance never miss a day at her stables. This motivation can itself reap rewards. Last September, Edwards ran a programme aimed at getting young people back into employment. She now receives regular requests for job references from those pupils who have made successful job applications. “That gives me massive gratification,” she says. u For more information or to make a donation visit

hen looking for an investment opportunity, the South East still offers great value in comparison to other areas of London; record breaking prices are being achieved, so confidence in the region is high and funding is liquid. With this in mind, if you are looking to invest, my tip would have to be Lewisham; with all the regeneration that the town centre is currently undergoing and improvements to infrastructure, there has never been a better time to invest in SE13. Whilst prices remain attractive compared to other South East locations, such as Greenwich and

Blackheath, Lewisham offers equally convenient transport links into Canary Wharf and the West End. The recent launch of Portrait at Lewisham Gateway, next door to Lewisham DLR, has brought a selection of high specification one, two, and three bedroom apartments to the heart of the hustle and bustle of Lewisham. No doubt this location will appeal to investors with a keen eye as well as young first time buyers looking for a safe purchase. Prices start from £270,000. Similarly to the regeneration of Lewisham, Woolwich is seeing a surge in interest. The impact and anticipation of Crossrail has really put SE18 firmly on the map.

ill has launched a scheme of new family homes and apartments in the heart of Sidcup, South East London. Park View will provide 11 one and two bedroom apartments and 14 three and four bedroom houses. South East London has soared in popularity over the last few years as transport links have become more accessible. We are seeing a lot of interest from families due to larger room sizes and the adaptable layout as well as the close proximity to good schools and open spaces. The scheme has been designed to ensure that

essential in ensuring that all parties involved are satisfied; inventories give you legal protection against any disputes that may arise either during or after a tenancy period. Smart Inventory is one such example of a firm that
it blends in with the surrounding properties and features a crisp white rendered exterior which is enhanced by warm red brick. In contrast, the interiors remain clean and contemporary. All semidetached houses feature gabled frontages while apartments offer balconies overlooking the landscaped communal areas. Completion of the scheme will be this autumn. Prices start from £335,000 for a two bedroom apartment and range to £475,000 for a three bedroom house.

How long have you been in this area? We have been at Blackheath Standard since 1998. Blackheath Standard has for many years been overshadowed by “The Village” with the prices of property in and around this vicinity beyond the means of most buyers. The search area became wider to now encompass the area of Blackheath Standard. What is your ethos? Our ethos is customer service; your property is our priority. The directors have a full hands-on approach in the day-to-day running of the business, which ensures our clients needs are met and exceeded. What are your favourite properties right now? We have just sold an amazing art deco detached house on the Laing Estate Shooters Hill, which was very tastefully renovated by the owners. Market predictions for the coming months? We have been very busy so far this year and we are registering lots of applicants for buying. I think that the market will continue to move quickly in the coming months, especially going into Autumn due to low interest rates and demand remaining high.

rowing up, I was never quite sure where my working life would lead me. I went through the obligatory stages of every young boy, from football player to policeman and later on seeing myself as anything from lawyer to architect. Before long, my days at Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School were over and the eighteen year old me had to decide between university and the big bad world. As much of a draw as my potential course at Hull University was… I went for the latter. I knew I wanted to go into something I was interested in, something I had a passion for. I’d always been fascinated by architecture and property in general, so estate agency seemed like an attractive option. After delivering CVs far and wide, my first opportunity came in Orpington. My intention was to gain some experience wherever possible and then I would be in a position to be more selective in finding my long term role. I have always lived in and around South

East London so that meant I spent a fair amount of time in Greenwich Park and Blackheath Village. Whether it was feeding ducks and squirrels or flying down the hills on a sledge in the snow, the park is full of fond memories for me. It’s such a huge benefit to naturally enthuse about the area you work in, so I knew Blackheath and Greenwich was where I wanted to be. Before my first year as an estate agent was up, I had been offered a role at James Johnston in Blackheath, and that was where my career really began. Fast-forward twelve years and sadly with a lot less hair, I am managing the sales team at Hamptons International. The eclectic mix of property and diverse client base keeps life
interesting and I wouldn’t wish to work anywhere else. It is so nice to wander around the village bumping into happy clients past and present, a thing that happens more often with every year that passes. Since my first day in the village, a fair amount has changed in Blackheath, not least the property prices! The fundamentals of the area, which offers village life inside London, have been a constant. However, what I liked to refer to as our secret gem has become less and less of a secret. The huge growth in ‘Prime Central’ London has led to people broadening their searches looking for better value for money while maintaining easy reach to The City. With the phenomenal growth of Canary Wharf, redevelopment along the river in Greenwich and Kidbrooke Village appearing in the other direction, it’s been an exciting decade. With our population growing and London continuing to be a city that draws people from far and wide, I don’t see interest in the local property market cooling anytime soon. u

ost of us have that Mediterranean property moment at some point in our lives, even if we don’t act on it. You may have already experienced it while on holiday; an evening meal on a balmy night, with the twitter of cicadas in the
background and the heady effects of some local wine. This is when the conversation probably turned to ‘let’s get a holiday home here’. At the moment these restaurant chats are multiplying as the UK economy revives, with holiday home prices rising too. So, what can you buy in the Med’s principal hotspots? u

APARTMENT AND HOUSES AT TERRE GIALLE RESIDENCE & RESORT, TUSCANY, FROM £66,400
taly’s Tuscan countryside has long been a magnet for UK tourists and house hunters, both drawn to its mouthwatering food, rolling countryside, olive groves and vineyards. While houses have been selling for sky-high prices for years, developments have sprung up to satisfy those with more modest budgets. These are often refurbished estates or palazzos. A recent example is Residence Terre Gialle, deep in the countryside half way between the city of Perugia and the coast, both of which are a two-hour car journey away. The site has a history rooted in the now defunct local mining industry and is a development of studios, one and two bedroom apartments and three-bedroom townhouses, which are available at full price or fractionally. u Terre Gialle, 020 3637 2215; terregialle.com I

ou will know this area of Cannes if you’ve read JG Ballard’s 2000 novel Super Cannes, named after the set of sought-after communities in the hills overlooking this most English of cities, and the glittering sea beyond. The area is a favourite of the film stars who come each year to the film festival, mainly because of the area’s unimpeded views of the coast. This newly built example is a five-bedroom property and includes every gorgeous cliché that a villa should have, such as an open-plan design, huge terrace and garden, and an infinity pool. u Savills Cannes, +33 497 06 06 90; savills.com
urcia might be one of the Spanish coastline’s lesser known areas, but it harbours one of Spain’s most famous golf resorts. La Manga is the natural place to visit if you’re a footballer or film star holidaying in the area. Such popularity comes from its location, overlooking a sand bar and within a national park, and its extraordinarily beautiful rolling golf course.
