M
arch is a month traditionally dedicated to mothers. Considering the hell we put them through on occasion, this seems only right. So, this issue is for the woman who picked you up at 1am from a sleepover because you were homesick and who decided not to judge when you thought dying your hair fluorescent orange was a good idea, who always had the best advice and comforted you in your lowest moments. This month we take a look at the new Thea Porter exhibition at South East London’s Fashion and Textile Museum, the first of its kind and a true testament to the extraordinary powers of the mother of 70s fashion. Turn to page 12 for flares and paisley galore. Discover how to give your home the Scandi treatment with interiors ideas and decorating tips from Brockleybased design duo, Att Pynta. Think stripped back, shabby chic with a healthy dose of white paint, all on page 54.
5 GREENWICH_MARCH_EDS_LETTER 2.indd 5
If you’re stuck for gift ideas for Mothers’ Day, we’ve got a few on page 33, everything from scented candles to spa days and lots in between to make up for some of the stress you’ve caused her. If she has more of a culinary turn of mind, perhaps treat her to one of South East Londoner Catherine Piddington’s weird and wonderful jams or maybe a lesson in Japanese cooking from Crystal Palace based chef, Yuki Gomi. Find out more on page 39. If you’re feeling really generous, you could even whisk your mother away to Daios Cove in Crete for the real A-List treatment, as seen on page 45. Finally, I would like to thank my mother; you are my role model and I am proud to call you mum. Also, sorry for calling so often. ◆

THE WOMEN’S ROYAL NAVAL SERVICE 1917-19 o mark Women’s History Month, the National Maritime Museum have put together a brilliant collection of manuscripts and photographs from World War One, all of which give as an unparralled insight into the life of the Women’s Royal Naval Service during the early 1900s. The jobs the women took ranged from cooks, clerks and wireless telegraphists to radar plotters, weapons analysits, range assessors,

electricians and air mechanics. Revelling in the opportunity to partake in wothwile work, this exhibition puts together the fragments of history, to show the strength of the women who lived such great - albeit short - lives. An educational and truly fascinating exhibition. ◆ Park Row, SE10; rmg.co.uk

ashion designer Thea Porter is remembered this month as an exhibition of her work opens at the Fashion and Textile Museum, accompanied by a new book published by the V&A. The exhibition, ‘70s Bohemian Chic’, at the famed South East London gallery explores the influence of Middle Eastern and North African textiles and culture on 20th century fashion and interior design and is the first ever retrospective to feature Thea Porter’s designs exclusively. Porter is the woman credited with introducing bohemian, Middle East-inspired chic to 1960s London and her signature chiffon kaftans were worn by everyone from from the Beatles and Pink Floyd to Elizabeth Taylor, Faye Dunaway and Barbara Streisand. Joan Collins famously said: ‘Thea’s are the only clothes I never throw away’.

(Doro)thea Seale grew up in Beirut and married attaché to the British embassy Bob Porter in 1953, moving to London with him in 1964. Here she established herself as an interior designer. After a variety of jobs and commissions, she rented a first floor showroom on Berwick Street in November 1965, followed by the opening of Thea Porter Decorations Ltd, at 8 Greek Street in 1966. Porter’s early fashion designs were in menswear and three members of Pink Floyd wore her embellished jackets and printed shirts on the cover of their first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The Beatles were her first big spenders when they came in to buy hangings, curtains and glass paintings to decorate their Apple Boutique. The location of Porter’s shop helped to mix the worlds of art and fashion and she was a regular at infamous Soho drinking club the Colony Room. Porter was part of a cultural renaissance in British fashion design in the 1960s that was spearheaded

by designers such as Zandra Rhodes and Bill Gibb, who found inspiration in other cultures and history. Yet Porter’s designs and influences were singular and distinctive. For nearly two decades she created clothes that drew much of their inspiration from an exotic view of the Middle East. Combining richly
patterned silks with antique fabrics, her creations were exotic, glamorous and highly personal. Exhibition curator Laura McLaws Helms said: ‘Thea Porter’s ambition was to create clothes that were intrinsically beautiful, and that would last. Today, they are appreciated by not only the customers who have treasured them, but also by a new generation of devotees who continue to seek out her designs: Kate Moss, Julia Roberts, Nicole Richie, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen – the appeal of a unique and original Thea Porter dress endures today among some of the most fashionable women in the public eye.’ Kate Moss famously wore a blue Thea Porter dress on the day before her wedding to Jamie Hince in 2011.

I don’t do sensible shoes’, or something similarly nauseating. And I didn’t. I wore Converse or heels. A trip to Clarks didn’t appeal (too school-y), Russell and Bromley wasn’t cool for flats then, I hated trainers, I couldn’t afford Ferragamo and I never got into shop-lifting, so I didn’t own a pair. Luckily, the jobs I had between 18 and 25 – as a fashion stylist, a journalist, and also at a nightclub – didn’t require them, but at that stage, shoes and clothing were to look fab, not to feel comfortable. My aunt Beatrix reminded me the other day of a pair of particularly wooden-

She had asked if they were comfortable, and apparently I had replied: ‘No, it’s like wearing devils’ tampons, but aren’t they beautiful?!’ I can’t recall saying this but don’t doubt rhetoric like that sticks in the memory, so I’m happy to concede. These days I shy away from devils’ tampons. Having worn so many in my youth, I now have an irreparably damaged back. That said, nothing in fashion excites me more than having my mind changed. Clever British designers such as Nicholas Kirkwood and Church’s have honed androgyny in women’s shoes to such elegant perfection that I can’t decide whether to treat myself to a pair of Kirkwood’s metallic azure leather loafers [ £295, pictured above] or Church’s studded Brogues. No one said life was easy…

t’s not very often that I bother to go and get my nails done - I’m I more of a DIY and then give up by the third finger kind of gal. So it was a special treat to head to Borough to Beauty Lounge and indulge in my first ever gel manicure. When I enter I am greeted warmly by Ayesha, my beauty therapist who leads me to a wall of gel nail varnishes and asks me to choose my colour. Somewhat overwhelmed by the options I go for a safe black. Ayesha shapes my nails into a natural rounded shape with a file and then pushes back and cleans up my cuticles. She then applies a clear base coat as we chat about the recent Anti Ageing Show at the Olympia. Ayesha applies the first layer of black OPI polish and I am instructed to place my hand in a black box which uses doses of UV light to dry and harden the polish. This process is repeated with two layers of black polish on each hand and then another clear coat. All of this serves to make the gel manicure immune to chipping and last for at least two weeks. Considering the fact that I usually chip my nails within seconds of painting them, this is ideal. They come out shiny and a lovely shape. Ayesha tops everything off with a hand massage and oil for my cuticles and I walk away a very happy customer.

SCENT
Discover perfumes that never go out of style, just in time for Spring W o r d s L aw r e n c e R o u l l i e r W h i t e
A
s I watched the models prowl down the catwalks of the recent international collections I found it fun to imagine what fragrance each one is wearing. Long gone is the notion that one has a signature scent; there are so many remarkable perfumes on the market, so why limit yourself to one? I have heard perfume wrongly described as a mask, a scent should be about you; your personality as a whole or playing up one the multiple facets of which we are all comprised. As I have the wonderful job of sniffing out some of the world’s rarest scents I have drawn together my shortlist of some new staples for your SS15 fragrance wardrobe. Some aromas are specifically made for certain outfits; nothing works better that the heather hue of Harris tweed and

lavender, but do not write off lavender as just for winter. Teamed with freshly pressed cotton, the fresh balsamic herby notes are psychologically more prevalent. New from Atkinson’s, ‘Lavender on the Rocks’ [01] is a double shot of lavender; icy-cold steely lavender water and mellow honeyed lavender absolute. Laced with basil and a dash of rose, the scent is fresh, young, fun and I love it. Denim is bang on-trend this season and along with the prerequisite Japanese selvedge jeans, ‘Denim’, [02] by new Italian perfume house Uermi, is a must-have. The prefect daytime fragrance, ‘Denim’ is a wearable combination of tuberose, pink pepper, neroli, vanilla and musk. Rarely does a scent give me goosebumps but that was my physical reaction when I first smelled ‘Volubilis’ [03] new from Bruno Acampora – and as recommendations go they do not come much higher than that. ‘Volubilis’, the brand’s latest release after decades, is simply stunning; grapefruit and pink pepper dance around rose, iris and mint on a bed of sensual patchouli, amber, vanilla and musk. A perfumer in the tradition of some of the great couturiers, Hiram Green creates all his fragrances

completely by his own hand. From blending to bottling, Hiram is a master craftsman. New release ‘Shangri La’ [04] opens with a fizzy sparkle of citrus, with a velvety rolling centre of peach, jasmine, rose and iris; a heavenly scent with an earthy base of vetiver and oak moss. Spanish fashion designer Mademoiselle Carmen de Tomaso felt her business was suffering from her less than Parisian sounding name so in the 1940s, having gone through almost the entire alphabet, she substituted the M with a V and the House of Carven was born. Carven has forever left her mark on fragrance history with her iconic and important scent Ma Griffe – which impeccably translates as ‘my mark’ as in ‘my signature’. Ma Griffe has spent too many years languishing in chemist shops but Carven have bought and brought it back and it is glorious. White flowers, with fresh green notes and lots of sophisticated aldehydes, is to my mind one of the most important scents ever made, born out by the fact it has never gone out of fashion. I dare anyone not to fall iwn love with this scent which is spring in a bottle.

TABLE TALK
METHOD Making The Buns
01 In a large mixing bowl melt yeast with a tablespoon of whole milk and a teaspoon of caster sugar. 02 In a separate bowl, sieve the flour with the spices. 03 Add the spiced flour to the yeast. Keep adding the rest of the milk, the sugar and egg. 04 Begin to bind the mixture together using your hands, then add the butter a chunk at a time whilst kneading the dough. 05 Continue kneading until you get a smooth, shiny dough. 06 Add the salt and fruits and continue kneading. 07 Cover the bowl with a tea towel and leave at room temperature for 1.5 hours, until it doubles in size. 08 Divide into 20 pieces, roll into shape on a surface to create smooth buns. 09 Arrange on a baking tray lined with a baking paper. Cover the tray with a clean tea towel and leave to rise. 10 When the buns are ready make an eggwash by whisking 1 whole egg, 1 egg yolk and a teaspoon of milk. Brush the buns and leave to dry out for 10 minutes. Brush again. 11 Pre heat the oven to 200°C. ◆
Making the X topping
01 Using a hand whisk, combine all ingredients into a smooth paste. 02 Fill a piping bag with the topping mixture, cut a small hole. 03 Pipe thin crosses on top of the buns on the tray and pop it into the oven. ◆
The syrup
01 Put all the syrup ingredients in a small saucepan and over a low heat bring to a boil. Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat and simmer until you have a syrupy consistency. 02 Remove from the heat and fish the spices out. 03 Once the buns are ready, brush them with the hot syrup. 04 Leave to cool for 15 minutes before serving. ◆

FOOD & DRINK / REVIEW The carvery, located at the end of the restaurant, is self serve and offers up an embarrassment of riches, including pork, gammon and roast beef. I decide to indulge myself and get the best of both worlds by asking for both roast beef and crackling from the pork along with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes stuffing, roasted carrots and peas. The beef is rare and tender, easy to cut and packed with flavour and with barely any fat to speak of. When dipped in the horseradish sauce, it’s nothing short of heavenly. The Yorkshire puds are light and fluffy, the carrots sweet

N
othing beats a Sunday roast, so to get my fix I headed down to Dulwich and Sydenham Golf Club Dining Room and Bar to indulge in a spot of lunch. After a scenic walk through Sydenham Hill Woods, my friend and I arrived and were greeted warmly by a waiter who showed us to our seats. This meal is clearly a family affair for locals as many large parties were already enjoying a hearty helpings of food and proposing toasts.
The menu we are given is impressive and comprehensive, with several starter options and a vegetarian risotto for those who don’t fancy the carvery. To start with I opt for goat’s cheese, red onion and portobello mushroom which is cooked to perfection and an ideal starter size, piquing my appetite for the carvery to come. My companion opts for the smoked chicken pasta, which is creamy and delicious as well as being very generously proportioned. My companion comments that she doesn’t want to fill up too much before the main event but that the pasta is too good to leave.
41 DUL_MAR15_Food_Review.indd 41
and a touch al dente. The stuffing adds interest with a mild curry flavour and delicious grainy texture. My friend who has been helped to a generous portion of gammon assures me that it, too is cooked well and is not too salty – a pitfall that often befalls gammon. We have only just enough room left for pudding, which is lucky because our respective crème brûlée and sticky toffee pudding hits the spot. My crème brûlée is sweet without being sickly and has the optimum crunchy top and creamy insides whilst my companion’s sticky toffee pudding is spongy and moist but just a little too large after her previous two courses, and leaves her defeated. The restaurant is part of the private members’ club and social membership is available and after the brilliant spread I had just experienced I was seriously considering it, if only purely for the Yorkshire puddings. u

LUXURY
CRETAN MAGIC Discover the delights of Daios Cove, the jewel of Crete, from sea adventures to spa treatments Wo r d s C at h e r i n e H a l e s
H
eading to Crete for a summer holiday is pretty much a nobrainer. The beaches are idyllic, the food is exceptional and the season stretches well into October, making it perfect for those who can’t get away in July and August. Perhaps the only thing I hadn’t previously associated with a holiday in Crete was luxury. Daios Cove proved me wrong. I arrived to a glass of champagne in the hotel’s incredibly striking entrance, whose glass doors open onto an panoramic view of the sea and the whole resort. The hotel buildings are spread out over the whole of the man-made cove, with the main reception, bars, restaurants, pools (plural) and spa located in the airy, modern central building. Rooms, suites and villas (of which there are 300 in total) sprawl out over the hillsides on either side, ensuring breathtaking ocean views
for most. I was staying in a Deluxe Sea View Room with an individual pool that I had to restrain myself from jumping straight into as a member of staff showed me around. I would discover later that although beautifully situated, the pool was unheated and a little more bracing than I had imagined it would be – but was nonetheless perfect for dipping into when I overheated, sunbathing on my balcony. The room itself featured all the mod cons including a king size bed and cavernous bathroom all done up in a sophisticated, luxe style. On my first afternoon there, I alternated between basking, lizard-like, on my private deck and moseying down to the saltwater infinity pool in the hotel proper. At this point, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that, due to sheer size of Daios Cove, many of the rooms are a significant walk from the main building. As a result, the resort offers a service of electric buggies that come to your door, pick you up and deliver you to reception.

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST We set out
BRIGHT AND EARLY on a CATAMARAN
to explore
On my first evening I dined in one of the hotel’s three restaurants, Taverna. The fare on offer there is traditional Greek cuisine and the à la carte menu did not disappoint, offering mainly fresh fish dishes. I started with tuna tartar, followed by paccheri pasta with lobster in a cherry tomato sauce. The ingredients were, without fail, incredibly fresh and flavoursome but it was the roasted sea bass fillet that really stole the show. By the time the cheesecake arrived I was barely able to take a bite and not even the lure of a cocktail could keep me from my enormous bed. Daios Cove offers a range of activities (as extras) to keep guests entertained and the next day a group of us set out bright and early on a catamaran to explore
Spinalonga Island, a nearby tourist spot. The journey itself was a real treat and as we laid out on the prow of the catamaran with the glittering azure sea rushing past, it was hard not to feel like glamorous extras in a music video. Tip: wear the highest SPF you can lay your hands on as the sunlight reflecting off both the water and the white boat will cook you like a lobster and the wind does a very good job of making you think it won’t. Spinalonga is a very small, very singular island that used to be part of the mainland until it was manually carved out of the coast in the 1500s and a fort built there to serve as a defence during the Venetian occupation. In 1903, the island was repurposed as a leper colony and remained one until
1957, making it the last leper colony in Europe. When we arrived, the dock was clogged with large cruise ships and it was with a certain amount of smugness that we rocked up and were decanted with minimum fuss. The island itself is fascinating and incredibly well-preserved, giving a chilling insight into life during those 60 years and a walk all the way around takes roughly 45 minutes. After stopping to leap off the catamaran into the sea and to eat a delicious meal of sashimi and fruit, we were returned to the hotel for spa treatments and my 55-minute massage left me totally relaxed. My meal that evening was at Pangea, Daios Cove’s international buffet-style restaurant. Again, it was the seafood that emerged as the star of the show; I could have eaten the sauteed calamari with marjoram pesto for every meal and the grilled

octopus carpaccio was swoon-worthy. This particular dinner was served with lashings of local tipple raki, confirming in my mind that, no, I do not like raki. Despite the state-of-the art gym and incredible fitness classes offered by the hotel, my interest was instantly piqued by the watersports I had spied one afternoon from the beach, so the next day, instead of heading to a pilates class, I made my way down to the water in the amazing glass funicular that connects the different levels of the hotel. Within minutes I was clinging to an inflatable sofa being dragged behind a speedboat at great velocity, shrieking with laughter. After being dumped in the sea several times and informed that, ‘You are hardcore,’ by an incredibly tanned, blonde beach boy named Sven, I retired to the beach to catch a few last rays. Apart from the catamaran trip and an excursion to the nearby charming village of Kritsa, I stuck close to the hotel because, frankly, Daios Cove has everything you could want.

t’s the little things which turn a house into a home: a vase full of flowers on the table, a soft lambswool throw on the sofa, a scented candle burning in the background. The type of things which are somewhat of a speciality for interiors brand, Att Pynta. Set up by two Brockley-based Swedes, Att Pynta specialises in Scandinavian-inspired interior accessories from a collection of independent designers. As a result their wares are cool, considered and totally unique – just like their name. ‘It means to decorate in Swedish,’ explains co-founder Amanda Nelson. ‘But not in the sense of painting the walls – it’s more like furnishing it with accessories to make it homely. It’s nice because Swedes immediately recognise it, but there’s no equivalent in English.’ This Nordic identity was key – both Amanda and her fellow founder Kai Price hail from Gothenburg, Sweden. Having met whilst working in fashion in London, the pair bonded over their Swedish roots and love of interiors, sharing copies of Elle
Decoration and the links to their favourite interiors blogs. Inspired by their shared heritage, the original idea for Att Pynta came to them during a lunch-break. ‘We both love Pinterest and saw so many ideas on there, but we couldn’t seem to find anywhere to buy those Scandi-inspired products,’ says Kai. ‘Or at least not in the UK,’ continues Amanda. ‘But you can find them in any shop in Sweden, so we saw a gap in the market.’ After this the pair sourced a carefully curated range of products from independent artisans and suppliers with a Nordic background. ‘All of our ceramics are actually made by my aunt out in Sweden,’ reveals Kai. ‘It’s brilliant because we can basically design and sell our own unique products thanks to her.’ Each one of these products provides a unique take on typical Scandinavian design. ‘The Scandi look is very clean, with lots of clean lines,’ explains Amanda. ‘It’s never fussy. It always uses muted tones, and often a lot of white. Layout is also very important, for example how each room would work best in the space available.

NOT EVERYONE
wants to buy things from IKEA
It’s very functional and considered, and it always has to be comfortable. The chairs, for example, are always ergonomic.’ This idea of functionality is a great way to introduce the look into your own home, with the key being to take things back to basics. ‘The first thing you need to do is to have white walls and white-wash your floorboards if you have them,’ advises Kai. ‘Then you need to declutter. Scandinavians never have clutter – they only display a few really beautiful items. So take away what doesn’t need to be there and just have your loveliest possessions out: your best books, a few cushions, a lambskin rug. Just strip everything away and then only put your favourite things back.’ But for those only looking to add a few Scandi touches rather than a complete

make over, Att Pynta is here to help, offering accessories that are both chic and affordable. ‘Most of what we have could go in any style of house, and as they’re accessories they can work in different settings,’ says Amanda. ‘For example, we both love the Scandinavian look but with an English eccentric twist,’ says Kai. ‘It’s a bit more shabby chic, with lots of books on the bookshelf and a few mismatched cushions. I think it gives it a bit more personality.’ Alongside their website, Att Pynta also makes an appearance at East London’s Broadway Market, selling their wares
every Saturday. ‘There’s a few stalls which I really like,’ says Kai. ‘Ro Co does amazing terrariums and pots, and they’re next to us which is cool because they have a similar look. Opposite us there’s also a really beautiful little tea shop called Tiosk which looks like a typical Scandinavian

café.’ ‘And Reo Jewels does amazing jewellery,’ adds Amanda. ‘It’s made by casting the body parts of different animals such as a rat’s spine or a dove’s heart. It’s like taxidermy jewellery.’ These traders at Broadway Market perfectly embody what Att Pynta aims to achieve – to champion smaller designers. The brand’s new cushion range, for example, is made by a Finnish designer who supplies Att Pynta exclusively. ‘It’s nice because it means not only do we know the provenance of all of our products, but they are totally unique to us,’ says Kai. ‘Because not everyone wants to buy everything from Ikea, and see it in every other house.’ ‘Getting those smaller accessories that aren’t super generic add individuality,’ agrees Amanda. ‘It’s those touches which make a place feel like home.’ attpynta.com

ove him or hate him, Russell Brand's L exuberant language and expressive voice work brilliantly for children. Taking away the swearing, but keeping a measured amount of anger, this retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the first of a future series of Trickster Tales and it makes an entertaining – and highly moral – read. Chris Riddell's brilliantly spiky illustrations convey the terror of the rats and give the piper a Clockwork Orange-ish sartorial swagger. Sharp-eyed Sam is a lone goodie in this cast of vile, spoilt characters that make up a cautionary tale for today's child-centric families. ◆

any dream of getting out of the education arms race, but Tessa Lumley actually did. She shipped her family from London to Morayshire where her two girls now attend Gordonstoun. In a letter to the principal she wrote: “There was a moment when Alice was nine and I found myself standing at her school gates wondering if the world had gone mad. Parents were discussing tutors, what their children were and were not reading, what extra-curricular activities they did or should do. The London academic process allows only certain kinds of children to shine — the lucky few who are either highly intelligent or highly diligent or both. Anyone else is liable to fail in a system where they are competing with hundreds for tens of places.” Andrew Johnson, headmaster of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, couldn’t agree more. “At somewhere like Winchester (where Johnson was head of modern
languages for ten years) a very bright tenyear-old boy might not feel very bright.” Gordonstoun has a 200-acre wooded campus; the school even has its own yacht and is famed for its unique outdoor education curriculum. Stonyhurst has a whopping 680-acre campus (St Pauls’ much-envied site by the Thames in contrast is a paltry 43 acres). Northern boarding schools are generally cheaper and likely to be more generous with scholarships and bursaries. Stonyhurst has an endowment that allows them to give away £2.3 million a year. Tessa Lumley finished her letter with this: “Most importantly, both Alice and Emily have flourished. They have grown and matured. They are being robustly and effectively educated — but they are also, crucially for me, being encouraged to be children: adventurous, inquisitive and occasionally intensely muddy. But, best of all, they are happy. Without happiness, surely it would be impossible for them to fulfill their full potential.” Makes you think, doesn’t it?
63 CHIS_MARCH15_Education_v2.indd 89
I want my son to go to a top pre-prep in North London – should I get him tutored for the 4+ assessment?
o tutor, or not to tutor? That is the question! T Unfortunately as with most of parenting, there is no hard and fast rule. It is entirely dependent on the ability of your child, the amount of ‘educational play’ they have experienced – either with yourselves or someone with a native English, well-educated background and your child’s rate of development. Although some parents do see tutoring as an absolute from their child’s first words, I am keen to advocate a balanced approach. Pre-preps look at a child’s character and ability to interact with other children, as well as their ability to count up to 20, recognise colours and shapes and recite the alphabet. To develop a child’s character as well as mental ability it is key for them to combine this learning with fun, knocks and grazes. If you are concerned with your child’s progress during their early years by all means seek advice and do opt for some ‘educational play’ to help develop their senses, social ability and skill set. If however, you are keen to opt for a more stringent programme of formalised learning during the toddler years, I must leave this to your prerogative. I will say though that I would far rather see my two little boys laughing and learning through games and fun, than having bags under their eyes before they even reach the joys of 7+ assessments.

SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
Blackheath High School inspires girls to fulfil their potential says Carol Chandler-Thompson Why don’ t girls believe in their own brilliance ? Reading a recent broadsheet article in The Independent on the findings from a research survey of graduates and university teachers, I felt somewhat disheartened to find that women are still deterred from careers in science and engineering. It described the misconception that success in these careers stems from some kind of intangible, innate ‘unschooled genius’. Gender stereotypes of female academic strength are seemingly grounded in diligence and hard work, rather than in intellectual brilliance. The Hermione Granger role model of conscientiousness and ‘swotting’ is how many graduates and professors saw young women, contrasting noticeably with the image of ‘natural’ male scientific geniuses like Einstein or Darwin. The article highlighted the underrepresentation of women completing PhDs in Physics and Maths, including the fact that 30% of Physics, Astronomy and Computer Science doctorates were awarded to women, compared to 60-70% in Education, Psychology or Anthropology. This can be seen across the STEM sector with the Women’s
EVEN GENIUSES WORK HARD -DWECK Engineering Society reporting that only 6% of the engineering workforce in the UK is female, among other worrying statistics. Certainly, outdated perceptions, fuelled by unhelpful media portrayals of the ‘intrinsic genius’, make it harder to convince young women that they have every chance of success in these fields. However, I am confident that the girls at Blackheath are well equipped to overcome such misconceptions. The Girls Day School Trust-wide commitment to the Maths and Science focussed ‘Your Life’ campaign, means that our schools buck the national trend, with over 40% of our graduates going on to study Science, Medicine, Maths and related subjects. Figures show that girls at GDST schools are over twice more likely to study A Level Physics or Chemistry than girls nationally, and overall nearly half the students in GDST Sixth Forms take at least one science A Level. Here, girls benefit from first-rate facilities, like 3D printers and inspiring
65 DULWICH_MARCH15_BLACKHEATH HIGH SCHOOL_ADV.indd 65
teaching. They are encouraged to attend enriching courses outside school, further broadening their horizons and fuelling their ambition. Each year, girls from Year 11 and Year 12 complete EDT-run STEM holiday courses at universities which provide the opportunity to learn more about exciting career opportunities that a STEM based degree course could lead to. At the moment, a flurry of excitement is surrounding the challenge posed by the ‘Your Life Formula 100 competition’ which enables the girls to devise and submit an invention. This breadth of opportunity is bringing results; we have just seen one of our Year 13s offered a place to read Maths at Jesus College, a further two students have received offers from Russell Group universities to study Chemical Engineering and our medics and veterinary medics are now beginning to receive their university offers too.
Beyond role models
The importance of providing strong role models for the girls, through our teaching staff, parents and alumnae, is critical to our success. However, it is my belief that a long-lasting remedy runs deeper than this. What concerned me most about the article, was the misunderstanding about ‘fixed intelligence’. Professor Carol Dweck’s research argues persuasively that believing your intelligence or personal qualities to be fixed in stone can be immensely damaging for young students. By helping our girls to understand neuro-plasticity, and the power of application and practice, we are providing them with the tools of future success. It is incredibly important to be honest with students about the commitment and time required to thrive intellectually. At Blackheath High, our focus upon resilience and risk-taking, fostered through our five ‘Pillars of Learning’, goes a long way to addressing this. Cocurricular clubs include ‘Iron Woman’ training club and ‘Brain Gym’, along with many others. These clubs enable girls to work hard at something difficult and deal with setbacks: all vital life lessons. I only wish I had been fortunate enough to understand neuro-plasticity at a young age. It might have helped me overcome my fear of mathematics and embrace a subject that I now find both fascinating and beautiful. u

high quality service so what better way to do that than using customer feedback. We had no idea how the industry would react but we had a hunch it would be a success. One of the first people we ran the idea past was Phil Spencer. He was totally supportive and has presented The ESTAS every year since.” Now in their 13th year, The ESTAS Group have developed into more than a very prestigious awards event. They are a management information service, marketing tool and live client feedback hub for agents, mortgage brokers, conveyancers and suppliers to the industry. Phil Spencer
he first thing I noticed about Simon Brown, Managing Director of The ESTAS Group was how passionate he is about customer service. “Most of us nowadays are used to having average or bad customer experiences, we all have them every day. The frustrating thing is that when we do have a bad experience and want to complain, it’s normally such a long-winded process we give up because we’re too busy. That means most companies never actually know they are giving sub-standard service.” Brown is equally frustrated at the raw deal estate and letting agents get from the general public and media. “My wife Sarah used to work for a local agent and it wasn't until then I realised how hard a job it was. There are so many different factors to every deal and there are many things that can happen that you’re not in control of that can break a chain down.” Brown felt so strongly about Sarah’s experience that they both decided to launch a national award scheme which highlights agents giving excellent customer service. “We decided straight away the best way to ‘judge’ agents was to ask clients to rate the service they received. We wanted to help change the general perception of agents and at the same time give firms the platform to promote their commitment to providing
Access to The ESTAS platform immediately gives each business a marketing pack with which to advertise, using posters, embed logos, press releases and tweet feedback to their followers through direct links. Monthly service performance reports with live graphs measuring feedback in different service areas against regional competitors and national average and a winner’s marketing pack are all part of the ESTAS experience, helping firms to manage and grow their businesses. “Our clients use the ESTAS process both internally and externally to increase customer service levels, to manage and motivate teams and to brand their business as one that is happy to be measured by their customers.” Finally Brown adds “This year is going to be more competitive than ever and never more so than in London which is why we have linked up with the Absolutely Magazine Group. We want to spread the word to London agents what the benefits of taking part are and give them a marketing edge in 2015”.

inding the right agent is crucial, otherwise selling your home or buying can be a laborious and traumatic experience. When choosing an agent, consider how long they have been established and their experience. A reputable agent with experience selling properties in the immediate location is preferable; they will know the local market inside out and, for buyers, be able to advise you on things like the kind of lifestyle you can expect, for example, where you can get a good Sunday roast or what your transport links will be. If you are selling, consider how your property will be advertised, agents who advertise in local publications will be more likely to reach your target market.

fter managing the KFH Peckham lettings branch for seven years, I’ve recently moved to open up our new Bromley lettings branch and it's lovely to be back in an area that I know intimately and love. My career in property began in Petts Wood when I worked for a local residential letting and management company as a property manager. It was a great career choice and I progressed quickly, accepting the position of branch manager in a short space of time. I stayed in this role for 14 years, thoroughly enjoying the variety it offered and the area we covered from Bromley and Chislehurst all the way down to Orpington and Farnborough market. In 2006 I was offered an opportunity to join KFH at their Peckham lettings branch. It was a great location to be in and over the past few years has been an interesting area to watch as it’s undergone quite large-scale gentrification. I was recently asked if I would like to return to my roots and snapped up the opportunity to return to Bromley. It’s another area that is benefiting from rejuvenation with a planned £90million redevelopment plan that will breathe new life into the area. The project will include new residential housing, a multiplex cinema, cafés and restaurants. This will add to the cosmopolitan charm of

the existing town centre with its weekly farmer’s market, specialist stores at the Intu Bromley shopping centre and the local Theatre and Arts Centre. Demand among renters in this part of South East London is steadily rising and with almost 400 new flats soon to launch in the area, this looks set to continue. The open spaces on Bromley Common and local parks in the area are a huge draw and for those who prefer period homes a little more than their modern counterparts, Bromley offers a good selection of Victorian and Edwardian properties. The area offers good value for money and it’s still possible to rent a one bedroom flat here for under £1,000 per month. Three or four bedroom family houses meanwhile are usually priced upwards of £1,500 per month depending on specification. There is every opportunity here whether it is for couples, young professionals or families looking for a modern purpose built apartment, period conversion or a large family home. Commuters can get to London Victoria from Bromley South in just 17 minutes and there are many sought after schools, which is a key reason why many choose to settle here.

The inimitable Edwardians
T
he Edwardian period was a brief but many-layered flash of late Victorian design brilliance. It ran for 30 years (compared to Georgian’s three-century stretch) beginning 12 years before Queen Victoria died, getting its name from the nine-year reign of Edward IV and then ending in 1914 when the First World War changed everything. “It’s not a period that makes a huge amount of sense in architectural terms because there wasn’t a big break either at the beginning of Edward’s reign in 1901 or in 1910 when he died,” says Christopher
Costelloe, director of the Victorian Society. During the Edwardian period, changes were afoot for London’s home owners. Servants had become more expensive and less common, commuting became more popular as the city grew, the Gothic style was falling out of fashion and the Queen Anne style was becoming more popular. All these features make Edwardian homes increasingly popular today as London’s high house prices persuade many people to look further afield for homes that are wider, broader and have larger gardens than their Victorian counterparts. But there’s another reason why Edwardian homes appeal. They hark back to a simpler, pre-industrial era and mix modernity with the rustic, the most common expression of which is gables with
89 STYLE BIBLE.indd 101
mock Tudor black-on-white framing. Other period markers include Dutch and Flemish influences, prominent chimneys, intricate detailing, white painted windows and the breakdown of the terrace and the growth of more “articulated buildings opposed to the more pared down terraces of the 1850s and 1860s”, says Costelloe. In central London the most obvious Edwardian homes are purpose-built apartment blocks, a type of property that Martin Bikhit of estate agent Kay & Co often sells. “Edwardian properties are defined by their high ceilings and well-proportioned rooms and the typical purpose built flats that we see are grand in appearance and are loved by families who are drawn to their proportions and internal space”. One property that would appeal to any buyer, and that was last sold twelve years ago for £1.2 million, is The Tower House on South Parade in Bedford Park. It was designed by leading Edwardian architect and Arts and Crafts designer Charles Voysey and is an unusual, white rendered property in an area of largely brick Victorian houses that “somehow it fits in very well”, says Costelloe. From this high point of architectural innovation to the thousands of standard Edwardian homes that pepper London and reflect these more radical homes, the style remains remarkably popular and widespread given its short existence. victoriansociety.org.uk

of the Moon is moored to piles driven into the bank but unlike most, it comes with a large 125ft mooring and a landscaped half-acre garden behind it, making it one of the largest plots on Taggs Island. Back of the Moon has been completed externally but it now needs finishing inside and could be an “artist’s home, workshop and gallery or a five bedroom home”, says agent Mary Hodgson of Waterside Residential. She says the property includes street parking for five cars, two driveways, a garage/workshop, summerhouse, outbuildings and its own slipway. But the person who buys Back of the Moon will be getting more than just a floating home. Taggs Island has plenty more to offer including an interesting history, a very famous boat owner and a strong community feel. The island takes

its name from Thomas Tagg who ran a boatyard on it during the 1870s and subsequently opened a hotel too. Then in 1902 Fred Karno, the theatrical impresario credited with nurturing the talents of Charlie Chaplin, bought the hotel along with the rest of the island. But Taggs Island slowly slipped back into obscurity until the early 1970s when it was used by film director Stanley Kubrick to shoot scenes for his 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. But development of the island only began in earnest when, in 1983, it was bought by a group of houseboat owners and proper sewage, water services and moorings were introduced. The decent services and idyllic position make the island popular with artists and musicians wanting to ‘get away from it all’ but be near London and that includes David Gilmour, guitarist and song writer with the band Pink Floyd. He owns the Edwardian houseboat built by Fred Karno and it is now Gilmour’s home studio. It is here that Pink Floyd’s most recent two albums The Division Bell and Endless River were recorded. But with such an extraordinary island come unusual aspects of life. The first is that mortgages for its houseboats are tricky to secure so most buyers make cash offers and, while the homes are freehold, the mooring and land are leasehold. Also, there are annual fees to be paid both to the Environment Agency for the mooring and to the island’s freeholders for its upkeep – but one of the island’s chores is also a pleasure. Some residents do their shopping by boat and chug up to Kingston to pop into Waitrose.
