EDITOR’S letter

I

have a theory that if London was sunny year-round, so many people would move here that Britain would be in danger of sinking. Walking through the city in the sunshine is like seeing it through fresh eyes and South East London boasts some of the best bits of all. Whether it’s going for a dip in Brockwell Lido, strolling around Greenwich Market or sprawling on a picnic blanket in Dulwich Park, in this issue we seek to inspire you to embrace the capital in springtime with off the beaten track events, scrumptious seasonal recipes and fetching spring fashion. This month I went exploring in London Brigde and managed to sneak a peek at the inner workings of Grant Macdonald, a worldrenowned silversmith famous for their craftsmanship and creativity – they even let me try my hand at filing and soldering (more fool them). To find out if I emerged with all my digits in tact, turn to page 12. If you want an excuse to head to Borough Market for some fresh fruit

and veg check out page 42 for recipes from Anna Barnett, a young, up-andcoming chef whose new book Eat the Week provides recipes for every day of the week no matter what your mood. If cooking from scratch doesn’t appeal, head down to The Frech House in East Dulwich for authetic Gallic fare on tap. Need more convincing? Turn to our review on page 41. As beautiful as London is in the sun, Gstaad gives it a run for its money and proves that it’s more than just skiing and snow on page 58. If that’s too far afield for you, why not nip to the Vineyard Spa in Stockcross, Berkshire to relax in the sunshine and unwind. Find out more on page 51. I hope you enjoy the issue and, with any luck, the weather. À bientôt! u

e were standing in a room filled with beautiful objects, some in glass cabinets, some on display tables, others merely depicted in photographs hanging on the walls; knives and forks with fantastical twisted handles and thin stemmed champagne flutes all crafted from gleaming silver were positioned strategically around the room. However, try as I might, I remained fixated on the object in front of me. I could not, for the life of me, figure out what it could be. The base was a box with a small display screen that looked almost like your common or garden kitchen scale but with a ‘T’-shaped contrivance protruding out of the middle, all of which was coated in silver. Others gathered to see what I was staring at. ‘Is it a lamp?’ someone posited. ‘It can’t be, where’s the bulb?’ ‘Look, it’s definitely a scale,’ another said firmly. ‘Then what’s that bit sticking out of it?’ We were baffled. Eventually, Charlotte, one of the representatives from Luxx PR in charge of showing us around drifted past. ‘I’m sorry,’ I said, feeling foolish, ‘but what actually is this?’ ‘Ah,’ said Charlotte, ‘That is actually for weighing falcons.’

THEY have become KNOWN FOR their beautiful bespoke WORK I had come to the London Bridgebased workshop and offices of Grant Macdonald, the renowned silversmith, partly to attend the unveiling of an incredible clock that had been crafted by the company and partly to take a peek behind the scenes and see what actually goes on in a modern silversmiths. We were told that we could even try our

hand at some practical silversmithing ourselves, although as someone who is likely to injure themselves making toast this prospect filled me with equal parts excitement and fear. Our tour began in the offices, where a mysterious looking machine was whirring away. In the past, the first step involved in silversmithing was to make an incredibly detailed model out of wax, a process that could take several hours, even days. If the client wanted something altered, the process had to begin again. Nowadays, however, there are 3D printers. Wonderfully comprehensive 3D models are produced by superimposing wafer thin layers of plastic on top of one another to the specifications of a model designed on a computer. I found it hard to pay attention to this explanation though, as the printer itself was utterly mesmerising – the fact that something on a screen was appearing fully made seemingly out of thin air approached Star Trek levels of futuristic. As we proceeded on our tour, however it became clear that this was one of the only parts of silversmithing to introduce new technology in hundreds of years. In the workshop computers were replaced by wooden workbenches, weathered tools and even an anvil, as well as good, old fashioned elbow grease. We were taken through the process step by step, meeting

ARTS & CULTURE / BEHIND THE SCENES The process of filing the silver to smooth out scratches

Grant Macdonald’s team of highly skilled craftsmen, each of whom is dedicated to a different stage of the operation until we reached a tray of silver keyrings, each bearing our name. It had arrived, the moment I had been dreading: audience participation. The hard part had already been taken care of (the actual shaping and crafting of the keyring) we would just be finishing it off. I was lead to a workstation, handed a file and told to sand off the scratch marks on the silver that would prevent it from becoming smooth and shiny when it was polished. This was a pleasant surprise – the only thing I had to worry about here was accidentally sanding off my gel manicure. We were instructed to hold the keyring against the wooden edge of the bench firmly and file in one direction away from our fingers. I felt confident and seemed to be making good progress until I realised that my fingers had begun to cramp after a measly few minutes and that I couldn’t hold the keyring without flexing vigorously. Once we had given it the old college try, the (incredibly encouraging) professionals took over. Our next task was to solder the ring at the top of the keyring closed. This sounded far more hazardous. We were lead into the room containing the anvil I had spied earlier and, sure enough, it soon became evident that this task would involve

Annealing the silver using a torch

Grant Macdonald Imperial Clock

both fire and a level of coordination that I severely lack. I let the others take over and emerged with all ten fingers in tact. The keyrings were then taken to be polished as we moved on to bubbles and nibbles in the room where the clock was being displayed. Grant Macdonald have become known for their beautiful bespoke work, taking

15 DUL_May15_SILVERSMITH_v2.indd 15

commissions from clients around the world and for luxury car brand Aston Martin. The stunning Imperial Clock is worth £100,000 and is inspired by the 18th Century French Ormolu Clock; it took 320 hours of handcraftsmanship and 80 hours polishing and is now on display in the Grant Macdonald store in Harrods. Grant himself joined us for a glass of champagne (served in a silver flute) after our tour and shared some of his story, telling us about the first thing he ever made in silver: a small spoon that he still has to this day. His accomplishments range from the sublime to the fantastical from the reconstruction of the orb and cross that sits atop the Church of Our Lady in Dresden (originally destroyed in the bombings of WWII) to the crafting of eight foot tall palm trees for a palace. Each project is imbued with the precision, creativity and expertise of this London-based team of craftsmen, who are emerging as one of the premier silversmiths in the world. And as far as I'm concerned, anyone responsible for designing a falcon scale, is well on the road to greatness. u Grant Macdonald, 36 Bear Lane, SE1; Harods, 87-135 Brompton Road, SW1 ; grantmacdonald.com

f you are one of the (many) people who have lost hours wandering around the proverbial cave of wonders that is every Anthropologie shop in London, rejoice! The eclectic and elegant chain is opening its doors in idyllic Spitalfields Market in early May, just in time for East Londoners to get their fix of ravishing fashion and positively addictive homewares for spring. The opening has been a long time coming for fans of the boutique and shoppers will note the carefully curated collections on offer have been selected to harmonise with the shop’s unique position and aesthetic in the historical Spitalfields Market. Anthropologie has always championed creativity and in this spirit they have organised a series of events for May in conjunction with Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. Students from the college have collaborated with the boutique to design the window display that will adorn the shop for six weeks and will lend a hand with the pop-up ‘Art School’ hosted there on 9 and 10 of May. The two events are: Saturday 9 May, 2-4 pm, Spitalfields Walk and Draw with Sian Zheng; Sunday 10 May, 2-4 pm, Large Scale Embroidery Workshop with Rachael Matthews. u

or some, getting your nails done is an indulgence; for others, it’s a necessity. Whichever category you fall into, sitting back in a peaceful environment, away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world and really indulging yourself can make a world of difference. This is exactly what The Stress Exchange offers. ‘In some salons, you’re sat right in the window,’ says owner, Ian Egerton, ‘It’s not nice. Here, you wouldn’t even know anyone was upstairs.’ Ian is referring to the buzzy, atmospheric salon on the ground floor which, once you descend the stairs, you leave behind for a calm oasis of three nail stations and a pedicure area. My beauty therapist, Alison leads me over to one of the stations and asks me to pick a nail colour. I choose black from the wide selection of Morgan Taylor polishes on offer and sit back and relax, enjoying the classical music (much preferable to the usual plinky plonky pan pipe fare you come across in spas). Alison chats with me amiably as she expertly shapes my nails and tidies my cuticles before applying some Aveda exfoliator to my hands, followed by some specially formulated Stress Fix lotion. The polish goes on perfectly and my nails look flawless, my hands are soft and I am generally happier and more relaxed than when I walked in. This is what Ian has striven for by using all-natural brands like Aveda and really cultivating the salon space, making it fit with London Bridge’s up-andcoming aesthetic but also giving people what they actually want. I find myself promising Alison I will see her again – and really meaning it. ◆

ose de Mai is a hybrid rose that was first bred in the 17th century for use in the perfume industry; it is pertinent then that we chose May to consider the olfactory fashion for this flower. It is not surprising that the rose, the aphrodisiacal aroma of which has been prized for millennia, has become a somewhat contentious ingredient in modern perfumery. This is largely due to the common misperception of what the scent of the rose actually is. Over decades our world has been flooded with a simplified, synthetized versions of the fragrance and these have replaced the real thing in our minds. Far from powdery at best and sickly sweet at worst the scent of a rose is complex and multifaceted, pop out to the park and bury your head in a bloom. The

chemical presence of rose oxide provides a clean, green, almost metallic, layer that cuts through the floral notes. Citral adds a contrasting splash of bright citrus, together with benzaldehyde – a natural aldehydethat brings further freshness. As the use of old-fashioned faux-rose scented soaps and nasty air fresheners has decreased so interest in this most remarkable of flowers is on the up. We look at the rise of the rose. When asked why he had commissioned a rose scent, Malle replied ‘because everything is so Barbara Cartland.’ It would be impossible to talk about rose scents and not to mention Une Rose by Frederic Malle

[01]. This benchmark scent references the earthy roots of the rose with primal patchouli, a smear of red wine and truffle oil create a near edible, carnal background for the more subtle, almost skin like, notes of the flower itself. I am rather taken with new British fragrance brand St Raph and its clever and well-conceived triumvirate of inaugural perfumes. Everlasting Red [02] is true to the trend of the ‘new roses’, a rich robust rose cut through with bright bergamot and sharp vetiver, with a soupçon of spicy vanilla. This is a fragrance that moves effortlessly and elegantly with you from day to evening. Another new launch is Nancy Meiland’s eponymous perfume house, also with three fragrances. Rosier [03] also opens with bergamot, this time with tangerine and blackcurrant, dancing around a heart of white pear, jasmine, peony and violet on a bed of tobacco and hay. from Spain, Ramon Monegal’s very modern Eau de Rose recalls

33 DUL_May15_Perfume.indd 33

the freshness and redolence of roses after the rain [04]. Things get a little darker with Eau d’Italie’s extraordinary Paestum Rose [05]. This perfect perfume takes the velvet petals of the finest Turkish roses and whirls them in wafts of smoky dark incense with stunning and near mystic effect. Exotic woods and more incense in the base render this a rose scent like no other. Turkish roses and incense also feature in Atelier Cologne’s charismatic Rose Anonyme [06], which starts with a sparkling burst of ginger from China and is carefully encased in a sumptuous cape of seductive oud. Equally beguiling is Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Rosamunda [07] where oud, amber and musk merge with alluring animal magnetism, cushioning a heart of Bulgarian and Turkish rose. The dualism of the natural chemistry of the rose scent – at once floral and green- is underlined here with rose leaf in the opening. Whilst on the subject of dualism, E Coudray’s [08] new travel size eaux de toilette combines a spray and roll on at either end. Perfect for a pulse-point, on-flight refresh without covering other passengers or a more general pre-party spritz. E Coundray’s classic and bestselling Jacinthe and Rose was recently joined by Iris and Rose, the scent of summer in a bottle. u

I was asked to AMPUTATE A TOE so the foot would fit into

DESIGNER SHOES!

Doctor Who? Absolutely talks to the man behind many a face, Dr Khan I n t e r v i e w A B S O L U T E LY ABSOLUTELY: How did the Harley Street Clinic come about? DR KHAN: My wife was working in medically-based skincare and had a room in Harley Street where she saw celebrity and media clients. She suggested I start working with her one day a week to supply the demand for botox and dermal fillers. Within six months we had a full time clinic and have gone from strength to strength. AM: What is the philosophy of the clinic? DK: A light touch is our philosophy. We want you to look your best. We offer everything from a facial to a full facelift, give honest advice and never let you overdo it! AM: How do you differentiate between cases when considering surgical or nonsurgical procedures? DK: There are lots of factors to consider, including your lifestyle, health and what you want to achieve. For instance, if you have a young child to look after, full on laser resurfacing that makes you look scary for

a week is unacceptable. We spend time during your consultation talking about your expectations and how we can achieve them. AM: Are there different benefits to both? DK: Sometimes only surgery will achieve the result you want, but some people do not want surgery, or their health may not permit it. There are always ways of improving the skin’s tone, texture and quality, and that can be as valuable as full on surgery. Ultimately, it’s the assessment that’s vital to a happy ending. AM: What is the longest surgery you’ve ever performed? DK: Fat removal and body sculpting can be take up to four hours or more. AM: If someone is determined to get a procedure, but in your expert opinion it’s not necessary, how do you deal with it? DK: We don’t do it and explain why. Unfortunately, someone somewhere may perform the procedure.

35 Chiswick_May15_Helena Coggan.indd 35

AM: In you opinion, what public figure has used surgery well? And, what about a celebrity who has taken things to far…? DK: There are many examples of good and bad surgery; Sharon Osborne for instance has openly admitted to having surgery and has looked amazing, however she may have gone a little far now. People who have had great surgery often do not admit to it. Gillian Taylforth is an example of good and appropriate procedures, she has returned to EastEnders looking younger than the son she is supposed to have given birth to 45 years ago. Gillian has had Silhouette Soft Sutures and regular facials with us. AM: What is the most common request you get? DK: To lift jowls and reduce forehead lines and crows feet. AM: What exciting innovations and techniques are you excited about? DK: Silhouette Soft Sutures have revolutionised minimally-invasive facelifting. AM: How do you stay discreet posttreatment? DK: There may be some bruising and swelling, so plan your treatments in advance so that you can keep out of sight if you want to. AM: What’s the most bizarre request you’ve ever had for surgery? DK: Toe amputation to make the foot fit into designer shoes – totally inappropriate! u The Anti-Ageing Show London takes place on the 16th and 17th of May at Olympia. À la Mode

We sample the fare at The French House,Dulwich’s own slice of traditional Gallic cuisine W o r d s r o b wa l l i s

ancy an evening or lunchtime filled with Gallic grub and grooviness? The French House in East Dulwich could be just the place for you. Opened last summer, it serves traditional French fare in a cool 1960s-style setting. Dress like Bridgette Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg if you really want to feel at home. Owner Audrey Michel’s roots are in Alsace -– which is reflected in the menu; alongside classics such as onion soup, foie gras, beef bourguignon and moules marinieres, there are Alsatian specialties including various delicious tartes flambées – super thin oblong shaped bread dough, topped with an abundance of cheese, smoked lardons, onions and any number of other tasty ingredients. Having been lucky enough to visit Alsace and try tartes flambées in the past I was

struggling to fight off their pull as various gorgeous smelling versions drifted past me on the way to other diners. My battle with food envy was ultimately resolved as I couldn’t resist the lure of another regional specialty, choucroute garnie and I was glad I couldn’t. A French take on wine cooked-sauerkraut

served with a mixture of sausages and pork cuts, this was just as hearty, tasty and filling as you might imagine. We had proceeded this with a starter of piping hot quiche Lorraine and a shared plate of charcuterie, which included as nice a duck pate as I think I’ve ever had. As my fellow diner mentioned ‘I could just eat this like yoghurt’. The day’s special was coq au vin and again, this classic dish hit the spot and we chose to wash down the beautifully rich sauce with a delightful pinot noir. No new world wines here. The

JUST AS hearty, tasty and FILLING AS YOU might IMAGINE all-French wine list will comfortably provide something for every palette. Despite very probably being too full to try dessert we bravely decided to share a sweet tarte flambée. Apples, crème fraiche and Grand Marnier – it would have been rude not to. Accompanied by a lovely Muscat this was a splendid end to a thoroughly enjoyable evening made even better by the delightful staff who were more than happy to make enthusiastic recommendations for anyone struggling with the menu. I shall definitely return, if nothing else, to try all the dishes I passed on this time. Uppermost on the list will be the wonderful looking tarte aux pommes I swear I could hear talking to me as we left. If you need an early morning French Fix, they also open for a breakfast of super coffee, croquet monsieur/ madame, tartines and pastries. With all this on offer, you could well be looking at your new favourite French hangout. u

METHOD

01 Make the marinade by combining the buttermilk with the spices and maple syrup in a glass or ceramic bowl. Season with salt and pepper, then add the chicken and mix well. Cover and leave in the fridge to marinate for 1 hour or as long as your patience allows. 02 To make the onion and radish salsa, combine all the ingredients and set aside in the fridge for 15–20 minutes. 03 For the paprika mayo, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and season to taste. 04 When you’re ready to cook the chicken, combine the flour with the cayenne and lemon zest in a shallow bowl, then season generously with salt and pepper. 05 Pour the vegetable oil into a deep-fryer or large heavy-based saucepan and heat to 190°C (375°F). FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES temperature by adding a cube of bread: it should sizzle and turn golden brown in 10 seconds. Working in small batches, remove the chicken from the marinade, trying to keep as much marinade clinging to the meat as possible, then put it straight into the flour mixture, coating it well on all sides. Carefully add to the hot oil and deep-fry for 3–4 minutes until golden brown. Remove the chicken from the oil and drain on paper towel.

love this dish. It’s simple and hard to get wrong, which means it’s perfect as a brunch, lunch or dinner dish. The spices, combined with runny-yolked eggs, feta and fresh herbs work a treat. This is also great as a sharing dish, so don’t save it just for lazy Tuesdays.

INGREDIENTS • glug of olive oil • 1 red onion, roughly choppe • 3 cloves garlic, crushed and roughly chopped • 1 red chilli, thinly sliced • small handful of oregano leaves, thinly sliced • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 2 x 400 g (14 oz) tins of cherry tomatoes • 4–6 free-range eggs –one per person • 150 g (5½ oz) feta, crumbled • handful of roughly chopped coriander (cilantro) • handful of roughly chopped parsley For the Garlic croutons: • 1 fresh crusty loaf • glug of olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, cut in half lengthways • small handful of roughly chopped parsley METHOD

01 Start by pouring a glug of oil into a skillet or frying pan over medium heat, then add the onion, garlic, chilli, oregano, paprika and cumin. Season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, for a few minutes until the onion softens, then add the tinned cherry tomatoes. Once the sauce starts to bubble, lower the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes to let the flavours deepen. 02 Crack in the eggs, spacing them out evenly. Turn the heat up to high, cover the pan with a lid or foil and cook for 3–4 minutes or until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny. 03 While the shakshuka cooks, chop or tear your loaf into roughly 2.5–5 cm (1–2 in) hunks. Heat a frying pan over medium–high heat and add a glug of oil, followed by the bread. Fry the croutons until golden brown all over, shaking the pan every now and then. When you’re happy with the level of crunch, drain the croutons on paper towel, then rub all over with the cut side of the garlic cloves and sprinkle with parsley. 04 Serve the shakshuka topped with a generous sprinkle of feta, coriander and parsley and a grinding of black pepper. Scatter over the garlic croutons, then place in the middle of the table and let people help themselves.

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE We find out what Julie Andrews’ favourite place has to offer in summertime, as Gemma Billington goes on an Alpine adventure to Gstaad. Glacier walks, chocolate factories and remote cabins are just the beginning...

HIGH The Alps may peak in popularity over winter but, during the summer months, the hills are alive with beauty and activity. Wo r d s G e M M a B i l l i n g t o n

W

hy would you go to Gstaad in the summer? I had been posed this question before setting off on my mid-July sojourn to the idyllic Alpine village, and during the train journey from Bern airport through the picturesque Swiss landscape, I had time to ponder. True, it was a few degrees cooler here than the London I’d left behind (typical) and the chalets did seem to have something amiss without their snow-covered roofs and icicles, but Gstaad outside of ski season is certainly not without its charms. For one thing, Switzerland is visually stunning in summer. The mountain peaks are still dusted in snow but the land flourishes with spring flowers. Everything is a lush shade of green, and great plumes of cloud seem to tumble down the hills towards the ground. The two

hour train journey simply flew by, with the glorious views providing ample distraction. Gstaad’s motto is: ‘Come up, slow down’ - alluding to its leisurely pace and high altitude. Actress Julie Andrews, who owns a holiday home in Gstaad, describes it as the ‘last paradise in a crazy world’. Along with Andrews, a plethora of celebrities have chosen Gstaad as their holiday getaway, and looming over town stands their retreat of choice: the famous Gstaad Palace hotel. Chugging into Gstaad’s quaint train station, a chauffeur in immaculate uniform doffs his peaked cap and imperceptibly takes my cases from me. A lift to the hotel is welcome but somewhat superfluous; the Palace is mere minutes away and is visible from practically every angle in town - with its castle-like structure and extravagant towers. The Palace may look imposing on the outside, but once inside it’s as cosy and intimate as any alpine

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST chalet. The interior decor is a tasteful, typically Swiss palette of subtle check, muted colours and traditional wooden furniture. A small balcony jutting off my spacious bedroom provides views across the village and a personal sanctuary in which to sit back, take in the sublime surroundings and relax. Gstaad Palace opened in December 1913 and, following a hugely successful inaugural skiing season, the building was extended the following year. The hotel has survived two world wars and ensuing economic turmoil, and has been managed by the Scherz family for nearly 80 years. After the Second World War, international music stars such as Édith Piaf and Louis Armstrong held exclusive concerts at the Palace, and the hotel has attracted Hollywood stars and royalty throughout its history, welcoming everyone from Paul McCartney to Princess Diana. A famous story is that Michael Jackson, friend of Gstaad regular Liz Taylor, enquired about purchasing the Palace, simply because he ‘liked the castle’. The hotel is still synonymous with celebrity clientele

and there’s a distinct air of glamour to it, particularly inside the retro Greengo night club, which opened in the 1970s. But the Palace embodies a relaxed, intimate atmosphere and it’s this, plus an unrivalled personal service, that keeps guests - celebrity or otherwise - coming back year after year. But what is Gstaad’s appeal outside of skiing season? Well, for starters, summer may be the only time you’re able to stay in the Palace unless you’re willing to wait a while; its winter season sells out months in advance. However, another attraction is that, unlike other Alpine resorts, Gstaad is very much open over summer, and there’s plenty of cultural and sporting activity on offer. Most

The Palace embodies a RELAXED, intimate ATMOSPHERE that keeps GUESTS COMING BACK year after year famous is the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open tennis tournament, which takes place in late July and this year celebrates its centenary. The Palace hosts a kid’s summer tennis tournament and offers family-friendly packages throughout the season, including a delightful Willy Wonka-inspired excursion to legendary chocolate factory Maison Cailler. For active types who can distract themselves from the hotel’s restaurants, bar, pretty terrace area or award-winning spa, there’s an Olympic-sized outdoor heated pool, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, Pilates studio and gym. I’d highly recommend an outing to nearby Glacier 3000, which has even more high-altitude rambles and simply breathtaking views, plus the world’s highest toboggan run. For more high-octane activities, the Palace can organise paragliding, jeep safaris and even river rafting - taking place on the river Sarine from Gstaad to Château d’Oex. Another must-do is a visit to the Palace-owned Walig Hut, a traditional Swiss cabin located 1,700 metres above

49 Chiswick_May15_ TRAVEL.indd 49

the village of Gsteig, originally built in 1786. With little but the dulcet chimes of cowbells for company, Walig Hut makes a whimsical lunchtime or dinner excursion (traditional Swiss fondue is cooked by a private chef, followed by a shot of traditional, fiery Kirsch) or even a romantic overnight stay. Condé Nast Traveller awarded it Best Wilderness Hotel in 2013 and it’s easy to see why. For added romance (or a surefire hit with the kids), the Palace can organise a horse drawn carriage ride around Gstaad, tailor-made to your interests. My guide, Marianne, born and bred in Gstaad, was infectiously enthusiastic and thoroughly knowledgeable. As the afternoon began to give way to evening, we trotted through the pristine town centre, where cars are forbidden and the Chanel and Louis Vuitton boutiques are ensconced in pretty, traditional chalets. Outside of the centre, at the grassy feet of the mountains, Marianne told stories of growing up in Gstaad and pointed out her childhood home. In that moment of utter tranquillity, I deemed Gstaad the most romantic, idyllic and serene place I’d ever been to. So, why would you visit in summer? My answer is, why on earth would you not? ◆ Rates start from £348 (490CHF) in a Single Classic room (per room and night including half-board, all taxes and service) and from £525 (740CHF) for a Double Small Room. WHAT IS IT?

T

he Vineyard Spa is, unsurprisingly, a haven for Epicureans. The hotel and spa is owned by the Michael family, who also preside over the Peter Michael winery in Knights Valley in California. The hotel is inspired by the Judgement of Paris, a famous wine tasting in 1976 that saw Californian wine surpass classic French wines in a blind tasting held by British wine merchant, Steven Spurrier. The hotel displays a large-scale painting of the notorious tasting, also by the same title, which united some of the wine world’s most influential wine writers and journalists. The hotel prides itself on its impressive private art collection, as well as its 3,000 bins, with around 100 of them available to taste by the glass.

THE SPA

T

he “5 Bubbles” spa is nice, but it’s definitely not the hotel’s focal point. The swimming pool isn’t great for swimming in, as it’s round and quite small, but the palm tree-framed atrium in which it is set is glorious on a sunny day. The treatment rooms, although airy and light, are equally unexceptional, which is by no means a comment on the service you’ll receive: The therapists are welcoming and thorough, with customer service clearly at the forefront of their training. We went all-out, first indulging in a pedicure, which incorporated paraffin wax treatment and high quality Mavala nail polishes. Then came the massage; let's ignore the irritating, predictable muzak, because the masseuse was competent and responded to each and every knot in my back. This, combined with the delicious Darphin oils used was so good and relaxed me so much that I had to take a nap afterwards.

THE RESTAURANT

O

ne of the best things about the hotel is the restaurant. Go all out and opt for the wine tasting menu; each delectable course comes with a sip of Californian wine and a sip of French wine so you can partake in your very own version of the Judgement of Paris. Head chef Daniel Galmiche believes, “Eating out is one of the greatest pleasures of life. I have made it my mission to communicate this.” There’s no doubt that he’s succeeded in his quest, even for my vegetarian companion, who was resigned to the belief that French chefs just don’t do vegetarian food. Not the case, as the seven-course menu was altered to suit her tastes. Meat or no meat, we were both very impressed.

THE DAMAGE Rooms start from £194 per night. The Vineyard, Stockcross, Newbury, Berkshire RG20 8JU; 01635 898 103; the-vineyard.co.uk

he middle of a spooky wood is T probably not the best place to open a refuge for introverted and nervous felines but this does not deter Miss Hazeltine. Her venture is a success: anxious moggies come to her in droves to experience her therapeutic regime. But will it prove robust enough when the patients must turn rescuers themselves? This delightful book tells a tale of fears overcome but the real pleasure is in the detail as Potter’s words and Brigitta Sif’s illustrations combine to ensure every re-reading has the potential for new discoveries. ◆

BATTLE OF THE BANDS Sydenham School

This year’s Battle of the Bands saw Hannah Riley and Ciara Clarke both 15 and from Sydenham and Orla Mantle (15) from Crystal Palace triumph with their version of Two Door Cinema Club’s ‘What You Know’. Their band is called Kenopsia – a term for the uncanny feelings aroused by deserted places usually bustling with life, a feeling they know well from leaving rehearsals long after the end of normal school hours.

Advice for students and parents on picking the best kind of holiday tuition before exam season starts

he epithet of last month’s column focusing on the T need for balance in the build up to stressful public exams, should not be lost in their aftermath. Post exam leave and the long summer break should absolutely provide respite from arduous hours in the library. Of course steam must be let off and of course heady summer nights will be at the forefront of most teenagers’ priorities. And rightly so – they have worked incredibly hard (we hope) and should be rewarded for their efforts. I still vividly remember the post-GCSE holiday that my friends and I were let loose on… it was almost considered a rite of passage. Eleven weeks, give or take, is a considerable chunk of free time. Having spent so much time focusing on academics, it should be used as valuable period to align interests and skills. Encourage your child to balance their socialising with time to be productive and achieving – whether undertaking work experience, attending a sports camp, visiting a language school or perhaps becoming involved in local voluntary work. By broadening their horizons in this way, teenagers will not only learn the hugely valuable skill of balancing work and play, but with their achievements their confidence will flourish and they will relish the parties even more. u

Slow Learner

A new movement that says a real education can’t be rushed is gaining ground W o r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

R

emember the slow food movement? A reaction against mass-produced, air-freighted food led to a minor revolution. Well, now we have slow education. One of its promoters is Mike Grenier, an English teacher and housemaster at Eton who cofounded the movement. Grenier says: “It struck me that the model of processing people through exams with narrow ideas about teaching, was mimicking the worst aspects of a McDonald’s production line.” He became interested in creating a model for education that makes time for creative teaching and learning. It is less about teaching to the test and more about allowing children to think independently. It advocates long-term projects to allow children to experiment – and sometimes to fail as they learn. Matthew Moss High School, a mixed comprehensive in Rochdale, signed up to the movement 18 months ago and so far, it’s a great success. Three lessons a week have been freed up in years 7

65 Chiswick_May15_Education.indd 65

and 8 to give students time to develop projects they are really interested in. At the end, a viva examination explores their knowledge and understanding. The school has also developed a scheme whereby younger students volunteer to attend classes given by sixth-form pupils. The topics they teach aren’t connected to the exam syllabus; they are just of personal interest to the student teacher. Some critics query whether such ‘project-based learning’ is a return to the bad old days of the 1970s when children were left with gaping holes in their factual knowledge. But Grenier robustly refutes this, saying that slow education is avowedly not anti-academic. “We’re not progressive,” says Grenier. “The academic is fundamental. We also believe in teaching people how to do stuff. It is about producing self-reliant children and adults. In fact, it could be seen as highly academic, since it values learning for its own sake rather than for where it could lead.” u sloweducation.co.uk

AS A SELLER, HOW CAN I SPEED UP THE SALES PROCESS?

I

t’s important that you collate all paperwork associated with your property once you decide you want to sell. If it’s a freehold property, making sure you have all the documentation for any alterations or renovations you have made is important – from planning documentation and building regulation approvals through to FENSA certificates, electrical reports, gas certifications and guarantees. Instructing the right solicitor is also very important. A London based company who specialise in conveyancing is usually the best option here – they will be experts in their chosen areas and understand the local market. It’s a good idea to instruct your chosen solicitor early, leaving you plenty of time to fill in all the essential paperwork at a pace that suits you. And lastly, if you’re selling a leasehold property, it’s important to order the management pack early, as this can take some time to come depending on who the freeholders are. 

GRAHAM LAWES Associate Director at JLL, Blackheath and Greenwich Photography rebecca noonan

I

am Blackheath born and bred and, despite plenty of travelling, something has always brought me back to the area. Maybe it was the memory of the endless days I spent at Royal Greenwich Park, or the fact that the village really hasn’t changed all that much – which certainly adds to its charm. Generations of my family live here, in the Westcombe Park Conservation area, in houses they have been in for most of their lives; it’s a difficult place to leave. What I love about Blackheath Village is that it is still as I remember growing up; I still go to my favourite Nepalese restaurant, the Everest Inn – where I am known by the owner – but there are also new restaurants, such as CAU (a subsidiary of Gaucho) and Côte Brasserie, popping up. I can visit the local, independent butcher or family run shoe shop. Everywhere I go I see someone I know, I can’t go out for a meal without being placed near a familiar face – which can be a good and a bad thing! Nearby Greenwich, however, has undergone major transformation and is seeing

a migration of high net worth individuals from North and West London who are looking for an easier commute to Canary Wharf. The redevelopment of the former district hospital site has closed the gap between East and West Greenwich and has really tidied up the area. People who live in Greenwich are the Blackheath residents of the future. My interest in estate agency came, firstly, from my desire to

GREENWICH IS SEEING A MIGRATION OF HIGH NET WORTH INDIVIDUALS FROM NORTH AND WEST LONDON work locally in the area that I was in love with, and secondly, from my parents’ property interests while I was growing up. At 15 I had a part time job in The Clarendon Hotel through school and was involved with The O’Donnell Group who had their own property portfolio, further rousing my interest. I also had friends in the business

and knew the people who owned local agencies so decided it was something I wanted to be a part of. No two days are the same and I never know who’s going to walk through the door; one day I could be pitching for 100 units, the next for a studio flat or £2m house. The industry has changed, though, and competition is fiercer than it ever has been. It’s key to develop a strategy in order to optimise a vendor’s return on investment and make the economics of the transaction work comfortably for the client. Also, the internet has hugely changed the estate agency landscape. Potential clients are more informed than ever, so they have higher expectations. Although there is more information out there, as agents we provide an extra layer of knowledge which is achieved by length of time and expertise in the market and access to industry databases to ensure that we are presenting the facts. Most importantly of all, it is necessary to manage expectations and act with honesty and integrity when doing so and this is what helps us stand out from our competition. u

MODERNISM The uncompromising style that’s still controversial Wo r d s NIGEL LEWIS

M

odernism has a relatively short history in the UK but it’s been a contentious one. Disliked by a public who have struggled to embrace its tenets and reviled by Prince Charles, the style has remained a niche interest for most homebuilders and buyers. Consequently, Modernist homes are hard to spot in London. This would sadden Modernism’s original and founding architects. Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Erno Goldfinger and Frank Lloyd Wright all tried to introduce a new way of thinking about architecture and, although they created very different designs, embraced a common set of ideas. These included that form that should follow a building’s function; simplicity; honesty about the material used (i.e. no cladding); walls at 90-degree angles and the use of materials originally destined for industrial, rather than architectural, purposes – such as plate glass. What few realise is that Modernism or ‘the Modern movement’ is really a US import via Germany. Architects such as Mies van der Rohe, who honed their skills in Germany’s Bauhaus school between the wars, fled fascism and emigrated to the US. Then, along with US home grown talent such as Frank Lloyd Wright,

THE MODERNISTS TRIED TO CREATE A NEW WAY OF THINKING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE

they began designing the white, angular properties we have come to know. But it took another 15 or more years for the style to land in the UK. So where did Modernism spring from? Its roots came both from a desire to find a ‘new architecture’ after the two world wars, the availability of both new materials and building techniques and also from the heavy influence of Art Deco. Modernism went on to have a huge impact on our perception of what a house can be used for including open plan living. But planners are still suspicious of Modernism and in many of London’s conservation areas it’s impossible to get the green light to build a house in this style. Attitudes are changing, albeit glacially, and the occasional highviz project gets the go ahead, a good example being the Shadow House on St Paul’s Crescent behind Kings Cross, built in 2011. More famous but older Modernist houses include Erno

Goldfinger’s home at No.2 Willow Road in Hampstead. But perhaps the best known in London is the Grade I listed Isokon Building on Lawn Road, also in Hampstead, built and designed for furniture designer Jack Pritchard during the 1930s. While the Isokon is the most admired, Erno Goldfinger was the best known architect in the UK, partly because Bond creator Ian Fleming had a spat with him during the early 1960s and pinched his surname to give to one of his book (and later film) villains. As well as designing several private houses, shops and schools in London, Goldfinger – who was a Hungarian émigré – designed a clutch of tower blocks including most famously Trellick Tower in North Kensington. This brutalist edifice, which features 31 storeys and some 217 flats, was originally built to house council tenants but a growing number of properties within it are now in private hands; a three bedroom apartment within it recently sold for nearly £700,000. Trellick Tower is an example of the controversy Modernism can stir up. Hated by many of the locals, it was given Grade II* status in 1998 and has been home to (and written about) by many musicians including Blur and The Clash. Perhaps finally Modernism is having its day. u

ou take a look at the unremarkable property details of this three bedroom Victorian house in South London and very little jumps out, apart from maybe its slightly shabby interior. And even that’s not too surprising – after all, the house is in the boho neighbourhood of Poets’ Corner near Herne Hill. “It’s one of those areas where a TV executive will live next to a wood cutter who will live next door to an up-and-coming singer,” says Anthony Shoring of local agent Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward. He says this property is generating plenty of online and offline viewings since it was listed on portal, OnTheMarket.com. So given South London is awash with terraced houses like this, what’s all the fuss about? The answer is that houses of this size and price within walking of a distance of a tube are becoming rare these days. The millionpound period home market is rapidly making its way further and further south of the Thames. Poets’ Corner is a rack of

THE MILLIONPOUND PERIOD HOME MARKET IS RAPIDLY MAKING ITS WAY FURTHER AND FURTHER SOUTH OF THE THAMES around six roads built between the twin forks of Railton Road and Dulwich Road north of Herne Hill. The area is called Poets’ Corner because most of the roads are named after bards – including Shakespeare, Milton and Chaucer. The developer who built these streets and houses during the late 19th century would be pleased. The area attracts the more artistic type including Claire Rayner’s son and restaurant critic Jay Rayner and singer La Roux, the ‘falsetto from the ghetto’ was brought up here. Poets’ Corner is popular not only because it’s a Conservation Area, but also because you’ve got one foot in Brixton and its reputation for urban grittiness, pop up restaurants, famous bars and clubs, while having another in Herne Hill, which is rapidly

gentrifying into an outpost of Dulwich. “I’ve been selling homes here for eight years and the biggest joy of this area for me is Brockwell Park and its Lido, which is at the end of Chaucer Road,” says Shoring. He says one downside is that good local schools are a bit thin on the ground and therefore the area attracts media types either without children or whose children have flown the nest. People like this, therefore, don’t need such large houses and tend to have more money at their disposal. This is all pushing up prices locally, and quite dramatically too. Houses like this have been going for nearer £1m but this property, because it has been rented until now and needs money spending on it, is going for somewhat less. “If the property’s right around here then there’s huge demand,” says Anthony. “We sold a house on Barwell Road recently and, after first listing it for £800,000, it went for £827,000 after sealed bids.” He also says a similar property to the Chaucer Road but in better condition went for £940,000 in Shakespeare Road recently, “which was new ground forus.” u
