or many, February is the bleakest month. We’re several months into winter and it feels as if there’s no respite in sight. All the dark mornings and afternoons, the relentless chill, the cruel grey skies. Any enthusiasm we felt for our winter wardrobes back in November has entirely evaporated. And to add insult to injury, it’s Valentine’s Day, a date that strikes fear into the heart of anyone single, even to those whose absence of coupledom feels fine on all the other 364 days of the year. Or should we make that 365? Because 2016 is a leap year, a confusing little quirk of time that makes the year feel a bit special. So, let’s cling onto that – and in this February issue we are celebrating all the best things the month has to offer, such as Eddie Redmayne’s new film The Danish Girl, which we discuss with the actor himself, who despite all his Hollywood success turns out to be one of the most modest men in

the business. With the Oscars coming up this month, our money's certainly on him. We also take a tour of 1600s London at the National Maritime Museum’s exhibition Samuel Pepys: Plague, Fire and Revolution. Famous for his colourful diaries, this display instead examines the times he lived in. In addition to this, we’re giving Valentine’s Day it’s due optimism with a page of gift ideas as well as a host of romantic fashion suggestions. If fleeing the country is the only thing that will bring you comfort, our Mykonos travel feature will offer both inspiration and impetus. Here’s to surviving February in style. I hope you enjoy the issue. Ciao! ◆

The rise & rise of

ne would expect Hollywood superstar Eddie Redmayne to be somewhat smug and brimming with confidence, considering his phenomenal success of late: an Oscar win for his scintillating portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything; the stunning reviews for his latest role in The Danish Girl (for which he is hotly tipped to win a second statuette); and his upcoming turn in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. But far from blowing his own trumpet, the Londoner is not only incredibly humble, but also, rather hard on himself. "I have to watch my films more than once because always the first time, I'm like 'aaahhhhhh, there I am'...and you see things that you maybe you're not happy with," he says. "I'm always self-critical, it's difficult to have a sense of objectivity with the first watch. You need to see it again to get over that." These traits are what sets Redmayne apart from his peers. He is the quintessential British gentleman: polite, softly spoken and preferring to let the

work do the talking – with phenomenal results. From his first major movie role as Colin Clarke in My Week With Marilyn, in which the young and naïve film assistant becomes a confidante to the blonde bombshell during the making of 1957 The Prince and the Showgirl to the brazen revolutionary Marius Pontmercy in the film adaptation of Les Miserables, Redmayne has rarely put a foot wrong. Despite his success, he insists he still doesn’t get the pick of roles in Hollywood. “Let's just say, I am not in that league, or anywhere close. I'm not Brad Pitt, I'm not Will Smith, I get no choice, and nothing has really changed. It's about what scripts come my way and if you're lucky enough that they feel right, then you go with it.” All that is set to change though, with his stunning turn in The Danish Girl which tells the true story of Lili Elbe (born Einar Wegener) a Danish painter who was born male and became the first person ever to undergo gender reassignment surgery. The chance to play such an incredible character is a dream for any actor, but it was particularly special for Redmayne who believed his ‘once in a lifetime role had already come along. “I genuinely believed Theory of Everything

was it for me, nothing could ever come close. And then I get the opportunity to play a pioneer, another, someone just as extraordinary as Stephen Hawking. They’ve both been wonderful gifts I could never have expected and I'm so glad that they have been a part of my life.” Set in the blue-grey wonderland of 1920s Copenhagen, The Danish Girl is a sumptuous visual feast – from the sweeping shots of the ballet costume department to the gorgeous chiffon dresses and velvet hats worn by Swedish rising star Alicia Vikander who plays Gerda, Lili’s wife. The combination of raw emotion and heady, 20s glamour is simply spellbinding. It is also a love story, albeit an unusual one, between Lili and Gerda, and deals with the emotional implications of a married man realising he identifies more with being a woman, especially in a time when such a concept was unheard of. Ultimately the
message is that love transcends genders and even in our current climate where transgender people are widely accepted, it is still a courageous undertaking. Vikander, too, has been highly praised for her performance as the enduring and compassionate wife by critics and in particular her co-star. “Alicia is phenomenal. She is an eruption of talent. She is absolutely extraordinary and has such a heart and a strength and that was so evident from the first meeting,” enthuses Redmayne, “I remember we read one of our first scenes together, I was behind the camera and Alicia read and usually there's a snap of 'cut', but there was simply silence. And I turn around and Tom is in tears. He was so emotional because he, we, were astounded by her strength and purpose.” Next year will see Redmayne play Newt Scamander in the film adaptation of

to work as an actor, NOT TO WIN an Oscar. IT'S MORE than I can comprehend sometimes JK Rowling’s Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them and if there is anything that could tip Redmayne into megastardom it is certainly the lucrative world of Harry Potter. But even in that case, Redmayne would surely remain down to earth. After all his success he chooses to reside in London where he grew up, rather than relocating to Los Angeles. He has often spoken of his great love for the capital and after his stint as a Burberry model he is literally the Brit poster boy. But when asked if he ever imagined scaling such dizzy heights he is typically low key. “My dream was to get work as an actor, not to win an Oscar but the fact I've managed to achieve both, and the get the opportunity to play people like Lili and Stephen, it's more than I can comprehend sometimes. The dream was just to work and make a living.” With the Oscars on the horizon, the release of Magical Beasts and the recent announcement that he and wife of one year Hannah Bagshawe are expecting their first child, 2016 looks set to be another incredible year for Hollywood’s humblest star. u The Danish Girl is on general release

s Charles I was executed in Whitehall, a fifteen year old boy stood in the crowd cheering. That boy was Samuel Pepys, writer of one of the most famous diaries in the world, with the possible exception of Bridget Jones. Thanks to Pepys, we have a clear insight into not only the defining historical events of the 17th century including the Plague, the Great Fire of London and the second Anglo-Dutch war, during which enemy warships actually managed to sail up the Thames, but also the everyday minutiae of London life; the food he ate for breakfast, what he thought of last night’s play or the demands of his latest mistress. What Samuel Pepys: Plague, Fire and Revolution, at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, seeks to do is flesh out the years surrounding the nine recorded in the famous diary’s pages, which ran from 1660 to 1669.

ARTS & CULTURE / EXHIBITION Cromwell, whose regime is recorded in the exhibition by a disturbingly detailed cast of his death mask, Pepys went on to enjoy the favour of the king whose throne he had helped to restore for much of his career. The first reward given was a job at the Naval Board where he was promoted to First Secretary to the Admiralty. As his career progressed, he became interested in science and natural philosophy. He would eventually become president of the Royal Society and it was actually during his term that the Society was given the opportunity to publish Isaac Newton’s Principia, the volume containing his universal laws of motion and gravitation. With a grin, one of the curators tells me that this was almost made impossible as Pepys had only just authorised a lavishly illustrated work on the natural history of fish entitled De historia piscium. Luckily, a private individual covered the printing costs of the seminal text and the world was not forced to trade an understanding of gravity for the mating habits of the brown trout.
ONE OF THE ONLY
things not to be found IN THE EXHIBITION is the diary itself The exhibition comprises over 150 different artifacts and displays that range from fabulous portraits from the court (and courtships) of Charles II to Wenceslaus Hollar’s panoramic views of London before and after the Great Fire. In fact, one of the only things not to be found in this exhibition is the diary itself, which can never be removed from Magdalene College, Cambridge. The focus is instead shifted to a broader representation of London living, which nonetheless captures every aspect of the notorious diarist’s life. One of the first and most poignant exhibits is the bloodstained waistcoat worn by Charles I at his execution in 1649 and although just a boy at the time, this seems to signify the beginning of Pepys’ role in English politics. By the time the king’s son Charles II returned from exile in the Netherlands in 1660 Pepys was at his side on the ship, a beautifully intricate model of which is on display. Despite having previously been a supporter of
Walking through the exhibition Pepys’ naval career and his political and scientific endeavours serve as a counterpoint to the more extravagant elements of his personality. His love of theatre and of music is represented by a display case full of the instruments he played, which include the lute and the theorbo, and he can be seen holding his own setting for a song from William Davenant’s opera The Siege of Rhodes in John Hayls’ famous portrait. Peter Lely’s provocative rendering of a naked Nell Gwynne and King Charles’ love letters to Louise de Kéroualle (who he nicknamed ‘chubs’) all speak to the libertine reputation of the court at the time and

this disaster that Pepys BURIED HIS parmesan in the garden also to Pepys’ own vices, although he remained immensely fond of his wife Elisabeth for the entirety of their 15 year marriage. The poster boy of the age of the rake, the infamous and dissolute Earl of Rochester, is also given a nod with a fabulous portrait of him accompanied by a monkey. In the background of all of this is the ever present reality of death, whether it be the Plague of 1665 that killed over 100,000 people brought to grisly life by a parish church’s Bill of Mortality (a record of weekly deaths) or the clever audiovisual display representing the Great Fire that destroyed 85 per cent of the city of London. It was during this disaster that Pepys famously buried an expensive wheel of parmesan cheese in his garden before fleeing to a boat on the Thames to watch the blaze, demonstrating great foresight and impeccable priorities. Unfortunately for Pepys, in the 1670s his favour at court waned amid accusations of Catholicism and displaced loyalty. He was even imprisoned for a time in the Tower of London for allegedly passing on naval secrets to Louis XIV of

France. Though cleared, Pepys had become disillusioned and weary of politics; when William and Mary replaced Charles’s brother James II in the so-called Glorious Revolution he retired to the village of Clapham, where he amassed an enormous library which he bizarrely and obsessively ordered, not according to subject or even alphabetically, but according to size from No 1 to No 3,000. After his death in 1703, Pepys seemed destined to become an obscure footnote in the annals of history until his diaries were translated from their original shorthand in 1825 by Cambridge scholars. The rest is… well, you know. Samuel Pepys: Plague, Fire and Revolution succeeds brilliantly in painting a vivid picture of London during one of its most chaotic periods by using Pepys’ life as kind of lens through which to view it. Despite few actual items belonging to the man himself being on display, we are able to get to know London through getting to know him and as a result, the exhibition becomes almost as personal and informative as his compelling, witty and unfettered diaries. ◆ Pepys: Plague, Fire and Revolution closes on 28 March National Maritime Museum, Park Row, Greenwich, SE10, 020 8858 4422; rmg.co.uk

ebruary signals the beginning of a new style season, where editors make The Great Fashion Migration for the world's fashion weeks. Following New York, London’s turn to wow audiences will last from 19-23 February, with everyone’s favourites, Burberry and Topshop Unique sparking serious speculation: Who will FROW? Who will perform? Perhaps the biggest news is the return of Alexander McQueen, which will be making a LFW cameo before returning to Paris for SS17. A similarly much-buzzed show is Mulberry and its (potentially) new direction after Emma Hill’s departure in 2013 (she unveiled her own label Hill & Friends for the first time last September). Other heavyweights Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou and Erdem are sure to impress, while we’re also looking forward to Sophia Webster's quirky presentations, Antonio Berardi (above)’s wearable glamour, and ROKSANDA’s colour explosion. And let’s not forget London Fashion Weekend, where you need no invitation (just a ticket) to see exclusive talks by some of the industry’s leading figures, including Pam Hogg and shoe designers Charlotte Olympia (who will have just made her LFW catwalk debut) and Nicholas Kirkwood. After shopping their current collections along with over 100 other labels', you'll quickly realise that London in February is anything but dull. Well, not for fashion anyway. ◆ londonfashionweek.co.uk londonfashionweekend.co.uk

he appeal of IPL or laser hair removal for me has always been rooted in laziness. Despite craving smooth legs and hairless underarms, the idea of shaving, waxing or otherwise ridding myself of this unwanted layer of insulation always seems expensive and a lot of bother for something that I have to deal with again, three weeks later. Enter the Panasonic ES-WH80 IPL Hair Removal System, the answer to if not prayer, then at least a few wishes. The Panasonic IPL, which can be used on the arms, underarms, legs and bikini line, uses Intense Pulsed Light to cause your hair to shed and to inhibit its regrowth. The more you use it, the lighter and thinner the hair grows back until it’s barely noticeable. For me, the advantages of this nifty handheld device are threefold. One, it can be used in the comfort of your own home. This means, no matter how hectic your schedule, you can fit in your hair-removal. Two, after the initial cost, you no longer have to pay for pricey treatments and products – you are your own salon! Three, and I cannot say this emphatically enough, it is pain-free. No more gripping the table and wincing while a trained professional takes out their pent up anger on your sensitive skin. After using the Panasonic IPL on my underarm hair for two months, I noticed a significant decrease in regrowth and thickness and my skin was distinctly smooth. I would recommend this clever gadget for both convenience and effectiveness. ◆

o get yourself onto a Barry’s Bootcamp treadmill you need to be both patient and agile. Classes sell out within seconds and the waiting list fills up shortly afterward so quick clicking is essential. But why, after 18 years since its conception in West Hollywood, is Barry’s still king of the it-gym? Perhaps it’s the loyal celebrity following that makes Barry’s so exciting – it gives us a chance to workout and compete against those who normally choose get sweaty in private. Sure enough, when I went to a class I found myself running next to Julien Macdonald. The signature class includes 25-30 minutes of interval treadmill routines and 25-30 strength training. The combination will improve your cardio and strength levels while revving up your metabolism so that you burn calories even after the class is done. With music pumping and disco lights beaming, my first session was a shock to the system. The “light jog” we began with turned into a run before becoming an almost impossible sprint. A minute later, however, it was done and we moved to the floor. Here I was met buy two 8kg weights with which we lunged, squatted and planked until we were weak. Doing this x3 times, the short bursts of exercise meant that motivation remained high. Having – somehow – made it through the 60 minute class, i’m determined to return. ◆

LOVE IS BLIND
But it has a very keen sense of smell. This month we discover romantic scents for Valentine’s Day
T
W o r d s L AW R E N C E R O U L L I E R W H I T E
here is probably nothing more pertinent than the gift of carefully selected scent on St Valentine’s Day. The whole notion of fragrance is intertwined with love and passion. As people become more adventurous and prepared to try new and varied fragrances, it can be difficult to know where to begin. This month we look at some of the world’s most romantic perfumes, those that tell tales of loves won and lost. Probably the most romantic fragrance of all is Creed’s Fleurissimo, which was commissioned by a prince for his bride, a Hollywood movie star, for their wedding day in 1956. Prince Rainier wanted Grace Kelly, soon to become Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco, to smell like the bouquet which she carried down the aisle. The scent is a joyous mix of tuberose, violet, Florentine iris and Bulgarian rose. Inspired by a more recent personal love story, the unisex fragrances of Jul et Mad olfactorily chart the romance of
Frédéric Malle's DANS MON LIT is quite literally A BED OF ROSES
their founders, from Julien Blanchard and Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard’s first chance encounter on the streets of Paris (Terrasse à St Germain), the moment they realised they were in love (Amour de Palazzo), a tryst in New York (Stilettoes on Lex) to their eventual wedding in Aix-en-Provence (Aqua Sextius). Le Parfum de Thérèse from Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, was composed in the 1950s by Edmond Roudnitska, one of the most acclaimed perfumers of the 20th century, for his wife. It was never commercially released and Thérèse was the only person allowed to wear it until its release to the public in 2000. This masterpiece is an essential testimony to the elegance of a bygone era: tangerine and melon top notes, roses with rich prune at the core and cedar wood, vetiver and leather supplying the distinctive base.
41 CHIS_Jan16_Perfume.indd 41
N’Aimez Que Moi was created in 1916 by Earnest Daltrof for Caron. Translating as Love Only Me, it quickly became the love token that young French soldiers going off to fight gave their sweethearts. Caron still makes a version of the scent today – now called Aimez-Moi, it is a fresh blend of roses, violets and lilac on a soft base of iris, vanilla, musk and moss. Also from Caron and by Earnest Daltrof, but a much more salacious scent, Bain de Champagne was created in 1923 for an American millionaire who wanted something to replace his and his lover’s champagne baths during the prohibition period. Benzoin, incense and opponox are elegantly swirled in lilac, rose and violet on a foam of vanilla and musk. In 1943 the name was changed to Royal Bain de Champagne (and again in 1993 to Royal Bain de Caron due to the litigious nature of the Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne). Whatever the name, it is one of the few fragrances made to be used in the bath. From bath to bed, Dans Mon Lit, another from the Frédéric Malle stable, is designed to be sprayed in and on one’s bed. Using breakthrough technology, it uses Rose Water Essential, a newly discovered liquid which contains all the olfactory molecules of rose petals, and the result is, quite literally, a bed of roses. ◆

This is Brad Pitt and Angelina’s Jolie’s wine and it’s made in Provence, the Mecca of French rosé. CAULIFLOWER CURRY
iesling is an effortlessly good match with curry spice flavours, especially if the sauce is coconut milk-based and even more so when the wine is a little off dry to temper the heat. This Chilean version ticks all those boxes, with its peach and lime flavours enhancing the spice flavour while being zesty enough to cool the heat. Great value. ◆ Vinedos Lo Abarca Riesling 2013 £10, marksandspencer.com

on’t let the exterior of Fabulous Ice Fires fool you into thinking that this is your average gelato parlour. Inside, business partners Taseer and Massimiliano have created a Willy Wonka-like experience that is unlike any other in the city. We are welcomed with a crisp glass of prosecco and the first amuse bouche from their Valentine’s Day menu. First up, gravadlax. Sweet and salty marinated salmon on crunchy rye bread crisps with a tangy dill and mustard topping. Not overly revolutionary but delicious, and an enticing warm up for what was to come: salmon gelato and horseradish in a bite sized croustade. Yes, gelato. Cold, creamy, slightly sweet and slightly savoury gelato perfectly balanced with the fiery warmth of horseradish. This was heavenly and an excellent example of the pioneering flavour combinations that makes Fabulous Ice Fires so original. The same can be said for the pecorino gelato that followed. A delicately flavoured, savoury gelato impeccably partnered with a syrupy piece of pear. The indisputable winner of the evening however, was the cider sorbet with olives and porcini mushrooms, served alongside a platter of succulent Serrano ham. The stand out dessert was a pecan brioche pudding smothered in a whiskey sauce. This indulgent, warming dish rounded off the evening perfectly. For tickets to Fabulous Ice Fire’s Valentine’s Day event, call Valentino on 07949151277. 14 February, 6:30pm12am, £25 per head, includes a bottle of prosecco per couple. ◆

A Middle Eastern feast at Arabica Bar & Kitchen in Borough Market Wo r d s S t e p h a n i e K i n g
W
hy, out of all of the possible mini foodie meccas in London, would you forgo all others in favour of Borough for Middle Eastern food? Because this is where you’ll find Arabica Bar & Kitchen. Nestled in one of the Food Market’s iconic railway arches, it is all the good things you want when dining out: warm, inviting, elegant – the food’s not bad either. Arabica’s outdoor seating is perfect for summer, whereas its indoor leather booths are extra snuggly on cold evenings such as tonight. My dinner date and I anxiously await Arabica’s famed share plates with some nibbles: beautifully aromatic roasted Lebanese nuts and the ‘house pickles’ comprising tart, bite-size pieces of cucumber, cauliflower, pepper, carrot and turnip. The first main dish, crispy semolina-crumbed
squid, arrives and its reputation precedes it: the lightly dusted, super crispy calamari is irresistibly moreish – even more so with its nutty tahini and lemon dressing. Swiss chard and three cheese pide is a sophisticated take on the classic spinach and feta pairing, where the sweet roasted pumpkin freekeh is enhanced by its crispy onion, toasted nut and minted saffron labneh accompaniments. Two skewers of chicken and pistachio shish are a succulent finish to mains, and although the knafeh (aka molten Levantine cheese infused with orange blossom and honey) sounds like a weird combination, it isn’t. Rather, it’s just the thing you crave after a sensational meal that transcends the seasons. ◆

f the proof isn’t in the 17.9 per cent increase in tourism to the island in 2015, then it certainly is in the number of recent celebrity visitors. The Kardashian clan shipped over for a break back in the summer of 2015, while John Legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lindsay Lohan and Katy Perry (to mention a few) all paid visits in the same year. French Vogue also paid homage to the tiny island with an enormous Mario Testino-meets-Mykonos fashion shoot in its November issue. An island of contrasts - who’d have thought that a 33 square meter spit of rock with a Martian landscape would appeal to the world’s most discerning glamazons? - Mykonos is a sun-drenched, relatively under-developed holiday bolthole, and there’s never been a better time to visit.
My group of seven 20-something single friends were looking for a break at the end of a long, drizzly British summer and Mykonos seemed like the obvious choice. September, after all, is a great time to visit the island. By this point the bulk of the
THIS SPIT of rock APPEALS to the WORLD'S MOST discerning GLAMAZONS party hoards have shipped out, meaning that the beach bars have freed up a little space, the sun has decreased in intensity a bit and prices - naturally - are lower. Spurred on by the promise of glamorous (not to mention uncrowded)

parties, Cuprinol-coloured suntans and cheaper drinks than you’ll ever find in Ibiza, we hopped on a three-and-a-halfhour Easyjet flight (booked last minute for £200) and set a course for Rocky Retreat II, an enormous iceberg of a villa overlooking Agrari Beach, on the island’s south side. One thing to note about Mykonos is that it’s imperative you hire a car. Our villa, mercifully, came complete with a fantastic concierge called Viktor who was more than willing to pick up our shopping for us and to organise taxis for our evening jaunt - but for day-to-day bombing around the island, a car of your own is essential. The roads in Mykonos, you see, are as windy, narrow and unmade as they come. Loose rocks litter them, potholes dot them and goats frequently trot across them. Rocky Retreats, for instance,

TRAVEL / WANDERLUST be met with a queue, but the wait is worth it- the generous owners will provide free local rose wine and mineral water for your pains, and the views are incredible. After lunch, head down the narrow path next to the restaurant and visit the tiny beach to the left of Agios Sostis’ main drag. We went for a swim at sundown and witnessed a more beautiful sunset. It might have been the wine, but watching the giant moon rising into the dusty pink sky above the lilac millpond of the Agean was a pretty extraordinary experience. If you’re looking for something a little less rustic, head out to Nammos on
though only around three kilometers asthe-crow-flies from Mykonos airport, took at least 20 minutes to get to by car – and that was only because we managed to avoid the goats. But never has a tricky journey resulted in more glorious bounty. Perched on the edge of a rocky outcrop overlooking the azure-cum-cobalt sea, the villa is a glittering oasis in the prehistoric landscape. Complete with three double bedrooms in the main house, and an additional two double beds situated in the ample poolhouse beneath, the wide open spaces and thick igloo-esque walls were to be our home for the next week, and we couldn’t have been happier. Furnished with a perfect kidney-shaped infinity pool which bleeds its blues into the sky and sea beyond; an enormous dining terrace and bbq, and an expansive fridge (perfect for filling with ouzo and strong Greek beer) - in addition to a brilliantly thorough maid who visits daily - Rocky Retreats II was to be our partycum-relaxation bolthole in the sun. The Rocky portfolio's original property
is the Rocky Mansion, which has a more family-centered appeal. The pool, for instance, is bigger and squarer, meaning you can actually use it for laps as you look out over the Agean; the bbq terrace is set further away from the main house (which boasts a master bedroom on the first floor, a smaller double bedroom on the ground floor and a room with two sets of bunkbeds next door), while the pool house below plays host to a grotto of extra rooms including two doubles and one twin, ideal for extra guests. And there's lots to do. For impeccable octopus in vinegar and unmatched local seafood, head to Kiki’s Tavern. Perched just above Agios Sostis beach on the east side of the island, expect to

THE MANOR
T
he Wilderness Reserve in Suffolk, a great Palladian estate dating back to the 18th century, now consists of 4,500 acres of land. A stay here is a bespoke, 5 star experience, whether it's exclusive use of the entire estate for a wedding, or a secluded romantic break in electricity-free Hex Cottage. Currently the estate comprises 50 bedrooms distributed across the manor house, cottages, stable blocks and clockhouses. Much of it was originally designed by Capability Brown, with his trademark lakes dotting an arcadian landscape. In keeping with his designs, a freshwater pool and hot tub are secreted away in a secluded hollow. Grade II listed Manor House Sibton Park has undergone a very sympathetic restoration project using materials such as local oak timber, creating luxuries such as an underground gym, cinema, games room and a soundproof entertaining area. ◆

side from the bucolic beauty and meditative peace of the estate, there are many activities that can be arranged; clay pigeon shooting, fishing, guided wilderness walks, dawn bird song tours, rowboats, hot air balloon rides, tennis, cycling, horse riding, and in-room spa treatments, but ultimately the aesthetics and quiet of the Reserve are most appealing draws. In keeping with the eco credentials of the project, over a million trees have been planted, lakes reinstated and acres of wild meadows replanted, with wildlife thriving as the balance of nature has been restored. A perfect place to relax and regroup before heading back to the city. ◆

his part of Suffolk is a fashionable foodie haven. There are countless quality restaurants, pubs and suppliers of artisan foods in the vicinity, many of which supply the estate. On hand to delight your palate is a two Michelin-starred chef and full waiting staff; and for those who love to cook, the cottages, barns and clockhouses are fully equipped with high tech kitchen appliances. Whatever your needs, estate manager Graham does his utmost to ensure your stay is everything you could wish for. ◆

his porcine version of the Prince And The Pauper is tremendous fun. From the moment Pignatius steals into the Palace and decks himself in found finery and a glorious red-haired wig trouble ensues. The story is told throughout in amusing verse: “Now for more fun!” thought the mischievous hog And he ordered the soldiers to hop like a frog.” Such subversive ideas are wellserved by hilarious and detailed illustrations. Numbers Game Singapore maths has had amazing results in the Far East, and now it’s working its magic here Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e
P
icture two different maths lessons: one in the UK, one in Singapore. One is noisy, full of children working in small groups, folding paper and playing. The other is quiet, regimented, a teacher standing at the front of the classroom and children chanting times tables. The noisy class is in England and the regimented class is Singapore, right? Wrong, actually. It was Singapore that introduced innovative maths teaching methods a few decades ago while the UK was still staring at the blackboard. But with Singapore coming second for maths in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s most recent Progamme for International Student Assessment tests and the UK a paltry 26th, we have taken note and Singapore maths is now all the rage among our primary and secondary schools. Last summer brought the first proof that these methods are working. The report – which looked at the impact of the Singapore method of teaching on five- and six-year-olds in 90 primary schools and 11 and 12-year-olds in 50 secondary schools – was carried out by UCL Institute of Education and Cambridge University and showed that children taught the Singaporean ‘maths mastery’ approach learn faster than their classmates and make, on average, an extra month's worth of progress in a calendar year. So what exactly is Singapore maths? It is a radically different approach from traditional UK teaching methods. Pupils are taught to master fewer mathematical concepts but in greater detail and they learn these concepts through a three-step learning process. In the first step, students will engage in hands-on learning experiences using objects such
WE DON'T get our CHILDREN TO memorise TIMES TABLES as dice or paperclips. This is followed by drawing representations of mathematical concepts. Only then are students asked to solve mathematical problems in an abstract way by using numbers. Ling Yuan, head of maths at a school in Singapore, explains that there is a strong emphasis in Singapore maths “on gaining a good understanding of the basics before moving on. This provides a strong foundation,” she says. “Key to the programme is the insistence that children learn by sequence, first by manipulating objects in the real world, then by drawing pictorial representations before using the mathematical symbols. “The concrete, pictorial, abstract method is very powerful because it helps children to visualise number and proportion.” she says. “The children

form a mental picture and a deeper understanding using beans or pieces of pasta – then they might draw a box with green beans in it and for every 10 green beans you get a red one.” The simple task of folding paper can help children visualise division, she said, adding: “We don’t get our children to memorise times tables. We are not into rote learning.” The Department for Education introduced Singapore-style textbooks to 72 schools in England in January last year. And it’s funding the Maths Hubs programme, a network of 35 hubs created in the summer of 2014. The aims of the hubs is to bring together maths education professionals in a collaborative network to develop and spread best practice in teaching methods around the country. Hub schools have access to textbooks, receive extra teacher training and development and take part in exchanges with teachers from Shanghai. Each hub is led locally by an outstanding school or college. London Central and West, for example, is led by Fox Primary School in Notting Hill. Singapore maths is also revolutionising independent school teaching. Bernie Westacott, head of maths at Merchant Taylor’s Prep schools, says that after just a year of Singapore Maths, pupils are a year ahead. “Pupils focus intensely on a handful of ‘real maths’ topics, whereas in the UK the maths curriculum is a mile wide and an inch deep, making it difficult for students to master the most important skills. Rather than teaching pupils to memorise facts and routines, the focus is on maths concepts which are born out of practical experience.” “I have been teaching since 1973 and have never been happy with UK textbooks nor the way we have taught maths,” he says. “A few years ago I came across Singapore maths which seemed a perfect fit.” ◆

of this fabulous green space. The range of restaurants, bars and pubs means that ‘grown up’ nights out can be varied without involving a trek in to town. ABS: Any favourite mummy-friendly cafes? LS: The playhouse at Plumtree Café in Greenwich makes lunches with toddlers a bit more fun and the home made soups are delicious. My three-year-old asks to go to the Age Exchange in Blackheath Village for beans on toast, where the two boys love drawing on the chalk board and visiting the children’s library downstairs.
Bringing up baby We talk to Laura Slater, owner of baby boutique Eat Sleep Love
ABS: What’s the best piece of advice you can give to new parents-to-be? LS: Only do one thing a day. It can be overwhelming at times having a newborn baby, fitting in with naps and feeds, getting everything ready to leave the house and remembering to eat lunch, so don’t put any unnecessary pressure on yourself. Set one objective a day, such as taking a walk, going to meet a friend or joining a play group. Then when you manage to do more than one thing it feels like a major achievement. ◆
Wo r d s A b s o l u t e ly SNUZPOD2 ABSOLUTELY: Why did you open an appointment-only baby boutique? LAURA SLATER: Having a baby is an incredibly special time but the prospect of buying everything for a new baby can be daunting, especially for first time parents. I wanted to be able to offer parents–to-be time and space to make informed decisions about their nursery products.
ABS: What’s your hot pick of Eat Sleep Love’s current products? LS: Many parents enjoy and see the benefits of having a baby sleeping close to them at night and Snuzpods have be incredibly popular. I get great delight when people see how versatile the bed side crib is as it offers the ability to use as a stand alone crib, a bedside crib or as a separate bassinet.
ABS: What brands do you stock? LS: We have a wide range of pushchairs including UPPAbaby, Mountain Buggy, Baby Jogger and Cybex. We are very proud to be one of a select few retailers that stock the Cybex Platinum range of cars seats. We have a wide range of furniture including Boori, Leander, Kidsmill and Bloom.
ABS: What is your favourite thing about living in Blackheath? LS: It offers us so much as a family. There are a lot of things going on for pre-schoolers; so many lovely playgroups, great classes like Boppin Bunnies and the proximity to Greenwich Park, offering the opportunity for constant exploration

Hamptons International, Blackheath
How long have you been in this area? I first came to the area to work for a company called James Johnston in 2003, a fair amount has changed since then. What is your ethos? Honesty, integrity and demonstrating a passion for what you do. Working in this industry can often be unpredictable but with the right ethos, you’ll not go too far wrong. What are your favourite properties right now? I love period architecture, more specifically early/mid Victorian. Although I’m fascinated by all kinds of property, without variety the property world would be a less interesting place. Market predictions for the coming months? We expect plenty of early activity with people aiming to buy before SDLT changes on 1st April. If the first few weeks are anything to go by, it will be a busy first quarter. ◆ Hamptons International Blackheath, 020 3151 7346; hamptons.co.uk

Q&A WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT RECENTLY ABOUT THE LOCAL MARKET?
Canary Wharf – London’s mini Manhattan – dominates views of the river from the Royal Observatory or up on Blackheath. With a burgeoning corporate behemoth on our doorstep, Greenwich offers an appealing remove for those who work in high finance but don’t want to spend their downtime in the shadow of the HSBC Tower. SE10 and SE3 postcodes are becoming ever more prominent in buyers’ minds, offering good value and growth potential.

Investors and first-time buyers are drawn to Greenwich Peninsula, anchored by the O2 with its shops, bars and restaurants. There’s an ‘Outstanding’ Millennium Primary school, plus easy access to North Greenwich Tube on the Jubilee line. East Greenwich has seen the highest growth in property value over the past few months, however.
LETTINGS MANAGER
I’d always enjoyed working in a sales environment, so decided to become an estate agent in 2005. I joined KFH five years ago and am now the Sales Manager of our brand new Catford branch. The area is undergoing a lot of regeneration and there are so many things to love about Catford – the mixture of properties, the good primary schools and, of course, the Constitutional Club! When not in work I love going to comedy shows, travelling, and spending time with my two beautiful daughters. ◆
I began my career in lettings shortly after graduating in 2011. Having worked my way up, I am now Lettings Manager at our new Catford branch. I previously worked for a property company in South East London, so it’s nice to be back in my old stomping ground. People are drawn to the area due to its large Victorian and Edwardian houses, good transport links and its local amenities. Away from work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family and taking long weekend breaks abroad. ◆
WHERE SHOULD I INVEST?
With the financial and tech sectors enjoying an employment boom there’s no sign of demand for homes in the area abating. ◆ Chestertons Greenwich, 020 8104 7500; chestertons.com

Do you long for a London village life?

t is often said that London is not a city, but a collection of villages in which we live, sleep and eat but rarely venture out of except to work and be entertained. There are over 50 of them ranging from a few streets (such as Barnes village) to much larger areas (like Hampstead village). And while size is easy to measure, provenance is harder to tie down. Many of London’s villages have been created both in antiquity and more recently by those hoping to make money from the ‘village’ moniker. “Villages are often created by the freehold owners of the buildings in the area with a view to raise the area’s profile because they have always been very popular with potential buyers,” says agent Christopher Sellwood, Central
North Director of Foxtons. “A sense of community and residential atmosphere, typical for a smaller town or a village, are sought-after by many, as well as access to a wide range of amenities right on the doorstep. “Previously, buyers would move out of London to fulfil that criteria, but with the increasing pace of life and longer working hours, ‘village’ areas in central London are a more desirable option for many families and professionals.” New homes developers have cottoned on to this recently. An example of this is to be found in East London. When developers wanted to give the myriad apartment blocks built within the Olympic site some appeal it therefore became a village. And Berkeley Homes is currently building the latest – what it calls Kidbrooke Village, one of four new residential districts in Greenwich.

There is also New River Village, a new residential area being built around a former Victorian pumping station in Hornsey. But some villages have more solid claims to the label. Battersea, for example, was a village until the mid-10th century when the railway arrived and the area expanded. In North London there’s also originals such as Highgate and Hampstead. Others are new villages created by communities. Zena Alkayat, author of the guidebook London Villages: Explore the City’s Best Local Neighbourhoods, believes it’s about the community taking ownership of its area, working together to provide public spaces that best serve the local people. “When that happens, you get a really appealing, fun and interesting place,” she recently told City AM. An interesting newish creation is Connaught Village in Bayswater, an area that clearly fascinates agent Christopher Sellwood. “Despite its central location and close proximity to Hyde Park, Connaught Street was perceived as an extension of Edgware Road, popular with Middle Eastern buyers, until Connaught Village was created 4-5 years ago, bringing with it a versatile range of high-profile amenities including art galleries, fashion boutiques and popular cafes and restaurants,” he says. So do you have to pay more to buy a home in one? London agent Kinleigh, Folkard and Hayward recently looked at village prices. According to the research, Hampstead village is the most expensive with an average house price of £1,525,109. The least expensive is Charlton in Greenwich where it’s £292,679. u

Demand from Hamptons’ corporate tenants is changing.
You may be surprised to learn that, last year, 65% of all Hamptons’ corporate applicants rented 1 and 2 bedroom properties rather than large family homes. This demand has come via our Corporate & Relocation Services Team, which works with an array of blue chip companies and top relocation agents to attract the very highest calibre tenants from across the globe. The profile of these corporate tenants is changing, however, and growing demand for 1 and 2 bedroom properties has led to longer tenancy terms in 2015 (typically 18 months) in flats and houses of this size. So, if you are thinking of letting a property which could satisfy this continuing demand, or acquiring a property locally for investment purposes, contact us today.

was born and raised in South East London and spent the first twenty years of my life in Greenwich. As a child, I was mainly interested in football and sports, but my earliest memories are of my Grandad. He worked as Chief Clark of Works for Lewisham Council in the building department for 33 years. It amazes me that I am now selling houses that my granddad oversaw and helped build sixty years ago. After school, I went into banking, and worked my way up from the post room to become a mortgage broker. I started working in estate agency in this capacity, then decided to take the leap into sales and became a branch manager in 2008. I enjoy meeting new people and am a big fan of architecture and interiors too. I love to see what ideas people have within their own homes, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Living and working in South
LIVING AND WORKING IN SOUTH EAST LONDON IS GREAT AS IT HAS SO MANY GREEN SPACES. LEE IN PARTICULAR IS SPECIAL
East London is great as it has so many green spaces. Lee in particular is special as there is such a community spirit here, everyone seems to know each other. There is also a great mix of people, young professionals and those working in the public sector mix with the older community who have lived here for years. We have embraced this community sprit by becoming actively involved in sponsoring local school events and charities. The schools seem to be going from strength to strength with many of them achieving great Ofsted
reports and featuring in the top realms of the London league tables, thus providing a further pull to the area. There is a mix of Victorian terraces, Edwardian villas, prewar semi-detached and town houses here in Lee. There are also purpose-built and studio flats, most of which are in period conversions. The Lee Manor Conservation area stretches from Old Road down to Lee Station and from Manor Lane to Burn Ash Road and forms part of the ancient Manor of Lee, where there are some beautiful listed Victorian homes. The areas I cover have seen some of the biggest price increases in London over the last year, but still offer some of the best value for money in the city. Lewisham council seem committed to regenerating more of the tired areas within the borough, which has improved the feel and atmosphere, whilst keeping Lee’s character and charm intact. ◆

SKI IN, SKI OUT How much more for a ski-in, ski-out chalet? Wo r d s N I G E L L E W I S

f you have ever been on a budget chalet holiday then you’ll appreciate the phrase ‘ski-in, ski-out’. Feeling very pleased that you had nailed a reasonablypriced week of skiing, you arrive at your destination only to find you are nowhere near a bubble or lift. At first the walk looks like a pleasant stroll. But in the mornings, laden with heavy skis, walking in leg-breaking boots and nursing a hangover from the previous evening’s toffee vodka-fuelled exertions, it’s like a polar trek. This may be fine when you’re in your 20s, but as most skiers get older and have a little more money in their pocket, they’re prepared to pay extra for a chalet that offers the opportunity to ski in and ski out. And so it is in the French, Swiss and Austrian Alpine ski property markets.

Buyers with relatively deep pockets are prepared to go that extra £300,000 to £1 million for a ski-in, ski-out chalet. But finding the right one requires very detailed knowledge of each resort and this is when a local estate agent is absolutely indispensable. Most ski resorts that are dominated by the chalet market (rather than flats and hotels) such as Meribel are often criss-crossed with small residential roads and peppered with hidden lifts and paths to the pistes. All of which makes property valuation very difficult, particularly in the Alps. For example, in the UK large houses in the leafiest streets with the best transport links and schools are usually the most expensive and sought after in our cities and towns. But not so in ski resorts. Size does matter but it’s more about the luxury extras such as sun balconies, indoor swimming pools,

outdoor Jacuzzis and mountain views from the lounge. But trumping all these qualities is proximity to a ski lift. What’s the point of paying £3 million for a lovely chalet if you have to drive back down to the resort’s central lifts every morning? Or walk along slippery pavements to a lift that gets you just a quarter of the way up the mountain? The greatest premiums are paid for the chalets that are far enough up the mountain to offer eye-catching views across the valley but from which you can ski out and straight on to a lift that will whisk you up to the major runs. And ideally these chalets need to be further enough down the valley so you can ski back home directly in the evening from your après drinks in one of the mid-level sun terraces. There is a downside, though. Jeremy Rollason of Alpine Homes in Association with Savills, says the hunt for a home that’s got the ideal position can mean you end up with a chalet that’s hard to get to by car and can be a long walk to the lifts. “The attraction of skiing to and from your chalet is hard to resist and values can be 10-20% higher for this privilege.” Roddy Arris of agent Knight Frank, agrees. “In most ski resorts it’s all about altitude within the town and this, to a certain extent is about ski in, ski out,” he says. u

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW… WHO LIVED HERE
eteran Brit actor Michael Caine, 82, recently told Variety that keeping things fresh had been the key to his success and confessed that while he has semi-retired from acting, he also has a hard time saying no to really good film roles. The actor famously left the UK in the 1970s to escape the clutches of the taxman. However, he has since returned and lives in a 200-year-old barn conversion on the outskirts of Leatherhead in Surrey and also has a two bedroom flat in Chelsea Harbour. But while the 60s were swinging, Caine lived in a terraced house near London’s Hyde Park, making some of his best-known films, including The Italian Job and Alfie. Originally two mews houses which have been merged since his time there, this property has been completely refurbished by the current owners, with oak flooring, air conditioning, and designer kitchen. u

Donovan got into film production in the early 70s and moved his studio to a Grade II listed Victorian property in fashionable Mayfair. It was his creative HQ from 1978 to 1996, playing host to celebrity shoots including Twiggy, Lennox Lewis, Cindy Crawford and Bryan Ferry. The property became derelict until developers Candy & Candy recently gave it a Bond-style makeover. The five bedroom property is now on the market for £18m with stacks of glam touches including a glass ‘champagne wall’, where 400 bottles can be chilled next to the dining area. u

aster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock was one of our most celebrated filmmakers. The Psycho director rented the top two floors of a house in

Cromwell Road, near Earls Court. He lived there with his wife Alma after their wedding in 1926. Their daughter Patricia was born shortly after. Their dining room was often used as a base for working on film projects with Hitchcock’s collaborators, as the great director liked to work from home, preferably wearing his favourite blue silk pyjamas and matching dressing gown. While there, Hitchcock directed The Thirty-Nine Steps, but he left England in 1939 after Hollywood came calling. He moved to America where most of his films were then set. The lower ground floor one bedroom property in the Cromwell Road building is now up for sale at £599,950. Newly refurbished, the

he Dave Clark Five rivalled the Beatles as Britain’s most popular band at the height of their fame, before splitting in 1971. Clark got into property and converted two floors of office space above The Curzon cinema in Mayfair into a duplex penthouse in 1967. His Grade II listed pad saw plenty of star-studded parties where Freddie Mercury, Leo Sayer and Dionne Warwick would attend. The current owners have given the four bedroom home a makeover. It has a gym, 360 degree views across the capital and a private terrace. It's on the market for £15.5m. u
