EDITOR’S LETTER
F
or me, August will always be about summer holidays. As a child, left to my own devices, the days were spent outside for as long as the sun held sway. My mother’s attempts to get me doing extra-curricular studies were abandoned in favour of more enjoyable pursuits: tree-climbing, tent-making and bike-riding. Perhaps she would have had more success if she’d realised that the best way to capture kids’ imagination is through constructive learning and fun days out. Battle-hardened parents know that you need a plan of action to fend off mischief, temper tantrums or a creeping sense of inertia. To that end, this month we’ve put together a guide to the best summer holiday events and activities around. So whether your rugrats are budding artists or more on the sporty side, you can arm yourself with some great ideas as to how to keep them amused. Older kids, meanwhile, may appreciate a trip to the Fashion and Textile Museum, where the almighty Zandra Rhodes has been beavering away for the last decade. The museum’s latest exhibition explores some of the style icon’s largely unseen creations from over 30 years in the business; turn to page 12 to read more. Elsewhere, head out on safari through the magnificent Serengeti. Not your average travel destination, the Tanzanian plains provide a uniquely astonishing landscape for a riding holiday – seeing the wonders of sub-Saharan Africa from horseback must be one of those truly unforgettable, unsurpassable life experiences. Flick to page 62 to read about Michael Kallenbach’s animal adventure. And until you hit the savannah? Enjoy the golden month that is August, and have an amazing holiday.
AUGUST 2013 A note on... ESSEX ROAD STATION The Crossrail 2 project is set to reinforce Islington’s mounting popularity among residents and visitors alike, ensuring the local area is as well connected as anywhere in London. The only thing that could please Absolutely more? Seeing the local Lib Dems’ calls for an additional Essex Road station bear fruit. No longer the poor relation of buzzing Upper Street, a slew of amazing shops and cafes (like Lily Tamberi’s Food Lab, this month’s Featured Restaurant) are affording Essex Road an exciting identity of its own. A dedicated Essex Road station on the Crossrail 2 line would cement the road’s rising prominence and encourage cultural and commercial activity on a new scale. We’re all for it.

#COASTALCOOL
If you’re headed for the coast, stay crisp and cool with fresher hues of light blue. Simple shapes will suffice – you don’t want to be flapping in the wind with too much floaty fabric. Capri pants lend understated sophistication – à la Audrey Hepburn on a bicycle – and this pair by J Crew do the job nicely. A lightweight knit is essential for those chillier summer nights; I’ve chosen this Chloe bobble knit, warm but white. Finish with these K Jacques St Tropez leather sandals. The name says it all – perfect for a port-side parade.

az Luhrmann’s lurid take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby may have divided the critics, but our love affair with the Jazz Age continues – and many of the finest fruits of this latest wave of cultural nostalgia can be found on our doorstep. The biggest impact has been on London’s nightlife, where the last few years have ushered in a new era of cocktails and speakeasies. Spearheaded by master mixologist Tony Conigliaro and his team at Islington’s 69 Colebrooke Row (aka ‘the Bar with No Name’), cocktail bars have been springing up all over town, serving up lush, left-field concoctions to jaded Londoners in need of fresh delights. GYPSY JAZZ
Believed to have been founded by gypsy guitarist Jean ‘Django’ Reinhardt in Paris in the 1930s, gypsy swing (or ‘hot jazz’ as it is sometimes called) is a fiery combination of American jazz and European folk music, Parisian waltzes and traditional gypsy tunes. Groups typically consist of a lead acoustic guitar, violin, two rhythm guitars and a bass, with an accordion or a clarinet sometimes making an appearance. Performers rarely read music; songs are passed down the generations. Gypsy swing, like the original gypsy music, is a living tradition. For Reinhardt, who was of Manouche Romany descent and had spent his 20s backing groups with his banjo, playing the popular styles of the time (waltz, java, mazurka, foxtrot), the combination of jazz and folk came naturally. Alongside Stéphane Grappelli, whose violin proved the perfect accompaniment to his guitar, Reinhardt’s group, Le Quintette du Hot Club, became a sensation and defined a genre. Today, Django’s legacy is undeniable. His continuing impact on 20th century era London - are sell-out affairs. But live jazz is just as easily enjoyed in one of the capital’s cocktail bars, if you know where to head. Leading the charge in our neck of the woods is Old Street’s elegantly louche underground cocktail den Nightjar, the popularity of which is such that reservations must often be made weeks in advance. guitar has led to musicians as varied as Julian Bream, Les Paul, BB King, George Benson, George Harrison and Jimi Hendrix all citing him as an influence and paying tribute to him as an innovator. Indeed, contemporary gypsy swing has an international and fiercely loyal following, with people flocking year on year to Samois-sur-Seine, a gypsy swing Mecca which plays host to the annual Django contrasts with a stunning vintage bar to conjure the spirit of a bygone age – a feeling only furthered by delicious cocktails served in smoking teapots and bone china cups. The musical accompaniment to an evening at Nightjar is always appropriately jazzy, with players travelling from far and wide to perform to a swinging clientele. One such group is the Top Shelf Band, billed as hailing ‘straight from Lucifer’s drinks cabinet’.
Reinhardt festival and the resting place of its nimble-fingered namesake. Reinhardt’s influence can be seen in a number of young and exciting bands who are flying the flag for gypsy swing today. The Top Shelf band for example, the self-proclaimed ‘enfants déspicables’ of gypsy swing who describe themselves as ‘purveyors of filthy jazz’, are helping to reinvent the genre with their fresh, cheeky appeal. The band describe themselves as ‘impish’ and ‘fi lthy’, and their self-penned music is a bizarre, brilliant blend of influences as diverse as the great man Django Reinhardt, Tom Waits and Queen. Mixing jazz’s roguish essence with wild on-stage antics, the band has previously stood in for Jools Holland, closed Glastonbury and supported the likes of Lana del Rey, Kid Creole and Paloma Faith in concert. They’re also
regulars at Nightjar, with every appearance promising musical wizardry, dazzling theatricality and a contemporary take on jazz’s unique spirit. PROFILE
Zandra Rhodes has long been recognised as a grande dame of British fashion, her flamboyant and unusual creations drawing inspiration from the worlds of art and design to rewrite the style rulebook From the late seventies onwards, Rhodes designed collection upon collection of acclaimed, groundbreaking clothing, so it was with not a little awe and excitement that Absolutely spoke to her about the retrospective of largely unseen pieces currently showing at the Fashion and Textile Museum, in celebration of the institution’s tenth anniversary. Unseen launched in July; tell us about this and what it means to you? What is the Digital Study collection all about? Unseen is to celebrate work of mine that is just that... unseen. The Digital Study collection is my work that has been photographed and is available for students to access and study. Why did you decide to open the museum in London Bridge? I found a building that I could afford in the unfashionable Bermondsey area. I then persuaded Riccardo Legorreta (the top architect in Mexico) and charmed him into designing it. The FTM is now credited with raising the [status of the] area. How involved are you in the day-to-day running of the museum and the curation of the exhibitions? I am on the board and consulted regarding exhibitions. I find that collections and my opera work make day-to-day running impossible.
Your contribution to fashion since the ‘70s has been phenomenal. As founder of London’s Fashion and Textile Museum, to what degree do you think institutions such as this contribute to the public’s understanding of fashion? The main thing in life is not to give up! The UK fashion designers are not always remembered internationally and textile designers are the unsung, unknown heroes almost always unacknowledged. The aim of the museum is to rectify this. What do you love about the local area and living where you do? It’s an exciting area that I am responsible for building up. The Shard has only come because of the initial gentrification. You came to set and costume designing a little later in your career, yet it seems like the perfect decision when you take into account your edgy prints and often experimental style - why do you think that was? It came at just the right time, when I had time to concentrate on this new medium, through being in San Diego. It was also fabulous to be able to use colour and my textile designs to the full. You’ve achieved so much in your life, being made a Commander of the British Empire in
1997 in recognition of your contribution to fashion and textiles. You’re also the holder of nine honorary doctorates! How does it feel to have played such an important part in the fashion industry? Are accolades such as these important to you? I just love my work and appreciate it when I’m honoured – including being made [the first] Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts. I have to say, I would also love to be a dame. You were dubbed the ‘Princess of Punk’ in the ‘70s; why do you think that was and would you say that was a fair reflection? I consider it an honour to be acknowledged in whatever way people see fit. In 1977 I designed a black and pink jersey collection with beaded holes, chains and jewelled safety pins. Hence the nickname which went with my photos in the papers. Is it important that fashion reflects the wider cultural context? Fashion is fashion; it is only valid if it sells. Cultural context only applies sometimes. What’s the best way to go about developing in, studying or succeeding in the fashion industry? Study art in a wider sense. Research what colleges to attend. Work as hard as you can and remember it will never be wasted.
SHE’S ALL THAT
Zandra Rhodes Unseen coincides with the launch of the Zandra Digital Study Collection which has been created for the education community through a collaborative project between the Zandra Rhodes Studio and the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), with funding from Jisc. The exhibition runs until the 31st August. 83 Bermondsey Street, SE1; ftmlondon.org 13

PYJAMA PARTY
Absolutely talks to local designer, William Tempest, about his new nightwear range How long have you been designing? When did you first decide to launch your own fashion label? I’ve always been creative. When I was younger I would be dressing up and making costumes out of anything I could find, mostly bin-bags and paper. At 15 I read the Galliano book by Colin McDowell and decided I wanted to go into the fashion industry. I started making t-shirts and customising clothes and sold them to a local boutique. After graduating, an investor approached me to launch my own label but I was also offered a design job in Paris. I took the design job to gain experience and then returned to London where I launched my label through the Fashion Fringe at Covent Garden competition.
Where is the design studio based and why?
My studio is on Bermondsey Street in SE1 (I also have a base in Dubai where I work with private clients on bespoke pieces). One of my favourite hangouts is a restaurant that does Middle Eastern food called Del’Aziz. The berber pancakes with maple syrup are the perfect Sunday brunch. I also go to a really nice farmer’s market on Bermondsey Square every Saturday and usually pick up something sweet.
How did the collaboration with W Hotel London come about?
I was in touch with W Hotels several years ago as I was interested in doing a shoot at the beautiful W Retreat in the Maldives. The shoot didn’t happen but we both wanted to work together so I met with the W London team to brainstorm ideas and the pyjama collaboration seemed like such an exciting thing to work on, highlighting luxury, British tradition and fun.
In what way have you interpreted the W Hotel brand in the design? The pyjamas were inspired by traditional
British pinstripe pyjamas, a classic and timeless look that references the days of the quintessential British gentleman. The print on one side of the PJ’s is made up of interwoven W’s, for both W London and my name William, and is my take on the pinstripe. I decided to work with cyan, magenta and grey in the print to keep the design fresh and to allow it to work well for both men and women. The idea of a reversible design came from the dual personality of the Brit, “buttoned up by day and let loose at night”, which also inspired the design of W London’s interior. You can wear the pyjamas on the grey side, but if you’re feeling more daring you can turn them inside out. The pyjamas have been made in Britain, which you can see engraved onto the buttons; it’s great to be working with British manufactures.
Describe your perfect night in...
It would involve someone special, cooking some amazing food together and eating some amazing cakes, and then lounging around listening to music, chatting, or watching a favourite movie; all very relaxed. William Tempest has teamed up with W London – Leicester Square to produce a limited edition pyjama set, available in the hotel’s E WOW and WOW Suites. For more information, go to wlondon.co.uk 15

MY STYLE Felder Felder, the Clerkenwell-based fashion label is run by twins, Annette and Dani. They share their inspirations
Most inspiring experience Travelling in India for four months right after high school when we were 19. Coming from the German countryside, it was an eye opener and it was the first time we spent such a long time away from home, so it was full of great, weird and scary experiences; a true adventure.
ALAIA SS13
Most treasured possession
Annette: A diamond heart necklace I got from my husband on our first Valentine’s Day together. Dani: My black Helmut Lang boots with fringes and an amazing wedge heel – they are completely worn out and I was told ‘give them up, they are dead,’ by one shoe repair place – but I didn’t give up and eventually found a place that managed to fix them and keeps repairing them for me regularly.

Favourite shoe designer
Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Iggy Pop, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss. And our mother, who is the most glamorous person we know.

Your favourite album at the moment
Ali Love’s Solo, and also his different projects with Hot Natured and Infinity Ink – we met him when we first moved to London; he was doing more rock music back then. We danced all of last summer to his house music tracks. We love the vocals and the beats; you can’t sit still!
Favourite designer Givenchy Riccardo Tisci
Favourite holiday destination
Ibiza in summer. It feels like home – we love the vibe, the music, the restaurants and the food, the people, the sea and the parties (the smaller private parties as opposed to the clubs). Miami in winter for the healthy food, yoga, beach, smiley people, sun and more sun....what more can you want after a summer in the rain in London? 21

HANDY CRAFTS Shoreditch’s acclaimed Geffrye Museum is offering three weeks of cool children’s activities this summer. Kids can explore the museum’s gorgeous gardens, learn about bugs and blooms, make masks, print t-shirts... in short, it’s a craft extravaganza. Activities are free and aimed at kids aged 5 to 16, though children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. All workshops are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis half an hour before the class begins, so check the website timetable and make sure you beat the crowds! 136 Kingsland Road, E2; geffrye-museum.org.uk
SHOWBOATING
Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre runs year-round courses for adults and young people, but its charitable Summer Youth Afloat scheme deserves a special mention. Largely funded by the centre’s own trust and the Isle of Dogs Community Foundation, the programme offers safe, expert instruction in a range of water-sports (including sailing and wind-surfing), with all equipment provided and RYA and BCU qualifications available for those who complete the relevant sessions. A great way to get kids aged 8 to 16 out of their bedrooms and into the open air. 235a, Westferry Road, E14; dswc.org 32

JAPANEASY Stoke Newington-based Takayo’s eponymous events company runs ‘kimono birthday parties’ for girls aged 5 and above. Children learn about the traditional robe while playing with fun props and accessories and creating their own photo frame using traditional Japanese Yuzen papers. The birthday girl is treated to a makeover and special kimono, and all the guests get to sample Japanese delicacies and sweets. Bring on the fun. takayo.co.uk
ANIMAL ADVENTURE
Kids and parents alike will love the new Animal Adventure experience at London Zoo, which aims to get youngsters up close and personal with the natural world. Kids can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of the treetops, splash around in a miniature stream and view the world from the perspective of a mongoose (with real mongoose standing right beside them) – and when they’re done, there’s the rest of the zoo still to explore, including Gorilla Kingdom, Tiger Territory and the latest addition, Adi the baby Tapir. Great fun for the wild at heart. Outer Circle, Regent’s Park, NW1; zsl.org
ROCK AND ROLLER North London welcomes yet another inspired pop-up this summer in the shape of Skate King’s Cross, a family skate rink by day and roller disco by night. The rink caters for roller skaters of all ages and experience levels and features food by some of the capital’s most exciting chefs and culinary startups – not least ‘punk restaurateurs’ Disco Bistro. EDUCATION
Under pressure
A leading head teacher has condemned ‘hothousing’ children. Are we asking too much of our children too soon? Amanda Constance investigates
W
e all know the sort, don’t we? Those children for whom the odd ballet, piano or swimming lesson isn’t quite enough. No, little Atticus has a maths and English tutor, plus Kumon, Mandarin and extra French lessons after school; and that’s before drama, violin and flute lessons on a Saturday morning. His parents, pushy, anxious and ever-present, schedule his every waking moment in the pursuit of excellence. They started plotting how to get poor Atticus into St Paul’s the moment the umbilical cord was cut. Now Richard Harman, headmaster of the prestigious Uppingham School in Rutland, has said enough is enough. A few weeks ago, he condemned such pushy parenting saying the current approach ‘may get short-term results but risks long-term damage.’ Harman, who is taking over as leader of the Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference next year, condemned teachers and parents who create a ‘hothouse atmosphere’, adding that ‘the entire social life of some London parents is consumed by whether or not their children are going to get into the school of their choice. They put their children through seven, eight or nine entrance tests. There is paranoia and a pressure that is just unhealthy for parents, as well as their children.’ And the evidence seems to suggest this hothousing is starting at an increasingly
younger age. The latest edition of the Good Schools Guide made headlines this year when it revealed that some turbo-charged London parents have been hoping to get their little darlings a head start by paying for professional interview coaching for their three year-olds. Such startling news raises the questions: why do parents feel the need to do it and why on earth are pre-preps interviewing prospective pupils? The answer is simple. The best schools in the capital are
The only useful preparation is to talk to them, play with them and read them stories.’ Of course, it isn’t wrong to be academically ambitious for your child. But Anthony Seldon, headmaster of Wellington College, says all too often well-meaning parents are convinced that their offspring are brighter than they really are. This may be because of their own academic ambitions or due to a distorted vision of what their child should achieve, both of which only increase the stress for the child. Seldon’s advice is to listen to the teachers and remember to ‘love our children wisely.’ You only need to go online to see that it is anxiety as much as ambition that is causing us to hothouse our youngsters. The parental blogosphere is full of worries about competition; from a shrinking job market to an ever more crowded world to academically brilliant Chinese children. Harman agrees that difficult economic times have fuelled the panic but his answer is that, ‘instead of focusing on results, schools and parents must help children handle failure, develop different strengths and become resilient people who can make relationships with others, because that is what brings proper happiness in lifelong terms.’ Charles Milne, Eton’s tutor for admissions, concurs. He says that when looking for its brightest boys – the so-called King’s Scholars – Eton looks for ‘boys with an original and enquiring mind, with the ability to go beyond the mere regurgitation of knowledge.’
Well-meaning parents are often convinced that their offspring are brighter than they really are massively oversubscribed from pre-prep upwards, so parents are doing everything they can to squeeze that little bit ahead in the race. Yet, ironically, as any sane parent or teacher already knows, you can’t coach a three yearold for an interview. Jo Newman, head of North London Collegiate Junior School – all girls, reception to year six, and which selects 40 four yearolds from around 200 applicants each year – told the Good Schools Guide: ‘I always tell parents that if they’re paying to coach three year-olds, they might as well burn £20 notes.

We must admit, at first the idea of ‘face mist’ seemed pretty ridiculous. Spray some liquid in your face at intervals throughout the day? FOOD HEALTH
A & Q
W
ith exercise it is most important to remember…
Consistency will win over severity. You can’t out-train a bad diet, so you must eat beautifully and train in a clever way.
The most effective exercises… Leave you burning calories long after you have finished working out. I am obsessed with ‘metabolic uplift’ – which ensures the moves you do keep your metabolism burning at a higher rate for at least 24 hours after a session.
If we don’t have time to go to the gym we should... Train at home. Set up some space to train with a professional or do a DVD. Your body is the only tool you need – I use very little equipment.
Is there such thing as the ‘wrong exercise’? Yes, relying on ‘steady state cardio’ – cycling or jogging at the same pace, for the same duration – if you’re trying to transform your body shape. Reduce the duration, but increase the intensity.
Should we be dieting? Not as such. We suggest a lifestyle diet. To lose weight we have an initial ‘transformation phase’ where metabolism is increased, body fat dropped, and a regime (or diet) is stuck to 100% of the time. Beyond that, during ‘maintenance’, portion sizes are slightly increased and that’s it. 20% of the time our clients eat out, drink wine and don’t worry about it.
On a ‘maintenance day’ we should eat… A balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate at each meal. Typically, I would eat: Breakfast: Yoghurt, berries and granola Snack: Ryvita with cashew nut butter and some fruit, such as an apple Lunch: A large salad with butternut, feta and pine nuts plus a small brown roll Snack: An orange and a handful of almonds Supper: Some fish or chicken with plenty of veggies and a green salad
The dreaded drink… Should we be drinking alcohol? In a weight loss phase, no. During maintenance, a couple of glasses of wine over a weekend is okay, but little more.

ur programmes work. Our scientific approach is administered by a team of dieticians and personal trainers, delivering impressive and sustainable results. It’s impossible to fail.
Types of Programmes The Intensive, a Training and Eating Method 6-8 weeks Clients are trained at home for three or four 90-minute exercise session. Once a week they come into our Belgravia Clinic to see a personal dietician. The Optimum Weight Loss Programme 12 weeks Weekly visits guide you through the process; it’s a blueprint on how to eat forever. As a nutrition-only
programme, it focuses on diet. You train independently or supplement with one or two personal training sessions per week, which we will happily organise.
About you… I began personal training as a freelance trainer the day I left university. I’m pleased to say I have never looked back.
Weekly Personal Training Ongoing Two sessions per week with your own dedicated trainer.
My lifestyle is about habit; a continual balancing act. Saying that, I love food and anyone who comes over for supper certainly gets spoiled.
Results Visible in roughly three weeks. By six weeks, most people are astounded by what they have managed to achieve.
At weekends I relax, have wine, meals out, and bake cookies with my girls. Come Monday I just eat how I normally would and try not to worry about it.
The Team I am nothing without them: my wonderful husband Paul, our office, dieticians and 24 exceptional personal trainers. We believe in a slick, highly professional service.

HOW TO Exercise our children From an early age, so they grow in confidence and enjoy it.
Exercise our teenagers (without affecting their body image) Sooner rather than later. They respond quickly to guidance and will incorporate an exercise regime so it becomes part of their routine, not simply a trend.
Exercise our 40+ husbands People categorise themselves too much by their age and limit themselves by what they think they can or cannot achieve. We train each person from the bottom up.
Eat during a pregnancy I’m pregnant at the moment (due to give birth shortly) and have eaten how I normally eat, plus or minus the odd croissant.
Exercise after a pregnancy The Intensive Programme! I’ve been documenting my progress on my blog and will share workouts and recipes after the birth; louiseparker.uk.com/blog

THE INSIDER Arabella Preston’s tips for bronzed skin
L
Golden Brown
eft it late to start your bikini bootcamp? For me, this time of year usually induces a blind panic and a call to London’s tan guru, James Read. Tanner to the stars and the capital’s glitterati, Read has his own brilliant range of self-tan products too. Having a tan adds definition to your body, making you look toned,’ he explains. ‘My tan icon has to be Farrah Fawcett. She defines tan to me – that iconic poster with her wearing that red swimsuit is the biggest-selling poster of all time.’ The success or failure of your self-tan is all down to the preparation of your skin. Product applied to dry, rough skin will result in a patchy, uneven finish. James recommends exfoliating 48 hours before tanning and waxing or shaving 24 hours before, then moisturising any dry areas, making sure to include your hands, knees, elbows, feet and ankles. James always uses a tanning mitt on clients and these are now almost always sold or included with self-tan products. They give the most uniform finish and also stop the palms of your hands becoming streaked. ‘With the hands, use excess product from the arms and work it down to the hands. Don’t wash your hands for eight hours. This will stop you getting white hands,’ he advises. A lovely scented body oil is the perfect way to finish off a tan once your colour has had time to develop fully. Rubbed into shins and collarbones, it will create that juststepped-off-the-private-jet look in a jiffy. Beach goddesses are made not born, so cheat your way to a hot bod with these tan-tastic heroes...

NOW OPEN FOR BRUNCH! Not that there is anything innately wrong with food for servants necessarily. We feed our staff very well indeed as it happens... We’d like to think of you, the diner, as the master in this set up you see.
We’ve been open for nigh on three months now and would like to extend a very warm thank you for making our launch a very exciting and fulfilling experience: you have come in your droves and on the whole seem to be loving what we are doing. You never know whether anyone will come when you open a restaurant and that we have served over 8000 of you since opening the doors gives us some reason to dispel those fears ! We are also still being judged by the great and the great and the good in the critical community ( thank you you Giles you may come again, Dineen if I see you watch those oysters yeah ?) and we are continuing to try and be the local restaurant of choice for Islington, Shoreditch, Dalston and beyond.

56 Essex Road, N1; foodlablondon.com What’s the deal? Who knew what flavours the future would hold when an Italian pop star packed it all in and came to London in pursuit of a culinary dream? After winning a job with Jamie Oliver at Fifteen (where she helped to run his trattoria), Lily Tamberi went on to open her very own Italian deli (cum restaurant cum wine bar) in our backyard. Why should you go? Get the day off to an Italian start with a choice selection of breakfast pastries and pancakes or pop in for a truly Mediterranean lunch. Risotto, salads, pastas, bruschetta and sharing plates populate the menu alongside specials such as fresh lobster linguine, carpaccio and slow-roasted pork.

428 Kingsland Road, E8; thedeaddollsclub.com What’s the deal? While the name may conjure images of a late ‘70s dive bar crammed with leatherand denim-clad punk rockers, the reality is rather different: a softly understated interior enlivened by hand-drawn trompe l’oeil wall art, candles and dainty chandeliers. Why should you go? There’s a dedicated gin menu for lovers of London’s traditional spirit. As with the decor, the music is not so hardcore as the name of the place might suggest: live gypsy jazz and swing while weekends promise more eclectic, danceable sounds from resident and visiting djs.

FOOD
THE LADY OTTOLINE Jack Bowman enjoys old time elegance from a hostess with the mostest
W
e make our way through the enchanting backstreets of London’s Bloomsbury to the Lady Ottoline, our dining destination and the latest offering from the team behind popular and widely acclaimed gastro-pub the Princess of Shoreditch. Her cousin may be a princess, but the Lady Ottoline has charms all her own. Named for a famous aristocrat and society hostess of the early 20th century (whose image adorns the pub’s interior walls alongside portraits of her lovers and some notable patrons of her London salon which was held at her residence in Bedford Square), the pub is located on a quiet, leafy backstreet. The main dining area, upstairs, is an intimate affair, decorated with further portraits of the Lady Ottoline and Dickensian night-lights that twinkle prettily upon the tables. We are seated next to a large sash window and to start, plump for the fishcake and poached egg with sauce béarnaise alongside a pancetta bacon, frisee lettuce and hen’s egg salad. To follow, my partner opts for the double Barnsley lamb chop with creamed mash and wild garlic pesto, while I choose roasted hake with caper butter and a side of mash. As it’s time for some serious tasting, we order a Closerie de Lys, Pinot Noir, 2011 to accompany our mains. To finish, I order a warm chocolate and walnut cake, drenched in rum syrup and accompanied by a scoop of ‘artisan’ vanilla ice cream, while my partner chooses marinated blood oranges with white chocolate mousse. Both are demolished forthwith. Bloomsbury has had many famous residents over the centuries, including this excellent gastro-pub’s noble namesake. With its focus on brilliant food and welcoming service, it’s hard to imagine that this new Lady Ottoline won’t hold court here for many years to come. 11a Northington Street, WC1; theladyottoline.com
PROUD CITY Catherine Hales solves a crime over dinner
T
he heart of the City may seem like an unlikely place for cabaret to flourish, the cultivated seediness and risqué shenanigans of the usual cabaret fare being at total odds with the sleek, businessy surroundings. It is exactly there, however, that Proud Cabaret has planted its flag – and with unremitting success. This may be due in part to the fact that Proud manages to honour the spirit of cabaret by going (quite literally) underground. As my companion and I descend the deep, purple-carpeted staircase, admiring the mirrors and enormous chandelier, we are greeted by a ravishing young woman clad only in vintage lingerie. We had come for the preview of The Silencing of Miss Scarlett, a noir murder mystery set amid a flurry of burlesque and musical numbers performed by a troupe of colourful suspects. The main room was smoky without being cloying and the lavish décor was reminiscent of a bygone era. I started with the lobster, trout and crab tortellini served with fresh sorrel and a shellfish and coconut bisque, which was very tasty – but I was soon suffering extreme food envy when my friend’s braised leeks and mussels served with dill and crème fraîche arrived, juicy and cooked to perfection. Both of
us decided on the seared fillet of beef as our main, accompanied by truffle mash; the meat was tender, just the right side of bloody and utterly delicious. Between the main course and dessert came the performances, featuring the fabulously sinister Mister Meredith (as both emcee and intermittent crooner) and three beautiful burlesque performers, whose tantalising routines came to a climax with a fiery extravaganza by my personal favourite, Miss Missy Fatale. Somehow we managed dessert, which for me was a slice of passion fruit cheesecake served on an amoretti base with lime powder and a mango sorbet. It was the perfect finish to my meal – the mango sorbet was particularly sweet and zesty. My companion ordered the walnut chocolate brownie served with pistachio marshmallow and white chocolate ice cream. The entire evening was fabulous, from the scantily clad waiting staff and camp variety acts to the over-arching narrative concerning Miss Scarlett’s murder, which helped to maintain a frisson of suspense throughout the evening. So after all that, who did kill Miss Scarlett? You’ll have to go along to find out… No.1 Mark Lane, (corner of Dunster and Mark Lane), EC3; proudcabaretcity.com 51

Glazing a Ham As a large amount of salt is needed to cure a ham, a little bit of sweetness added to the finished item is highly complementary. You can achieve this by serving the ham with something sweet yet acidic, such as Cumberland or cranberry sauce, or by baking the cooked ham with a glaze. Often the former makes a good base for the latter, and it wouldn’t be considered wrong to do both. MUSTARD AND BROWN SUGAR GLAZE 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp grain mustard 3 tbsp soft brown sugar

PRIME CUTS
The Ginger Pig has always been at the forefront of British farming and butchery. Absolutely enjoys a second helping of recipes from their new cookbook
BLACK TREACLE AND SPICE GLAZE 2 tbsp black treacle 1 tbsp golden syrup 3 tbsp stout ½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp ground cinnamon APRICOT AND GINGER GLAZE 3 tbsp good-quality apricot jam 1 piece of stem ginger, finely chopped
To glaze a ham Peel off the skin (not the fat) while the ham is still hot; this is very tricky to do neatly once it cools, so wear a pair of rubber gloves to guard against the heat. If you’re a stickler for presentation, score a neat, criss-cross pattern into the fat, though a few slashes will suffice if you’re less particular. Prepare your glaze and rub it into the fat. The suggested glazes above are easy to make and are really delicious, but for a very simple alternative, brush a tangy, thick-cut marmalade or redcurrant jelly over the ham. Stud the surface with cloves, if you wish, then bake the ham in a hot-ish oven (200°C/400°F/gas mark 6) for 20–30 minutes, until the fat is wonderfully caramelised. Slice and serve hot, or allow to cool if you prefer it cold.

TRAVEL THE FARM
Situated in the heart of Devon, Aller Farm’s main export is milk and, as a result, the surrounding fields are full of cows whose gentle lowing, alongside the song of birds, becomes part of the background noise – a distinct improvement on city traffic. The entire place has an incredibly welcoming feel, enhanced by the warmness of our host, Emma, who takes us on a tour and shows us the larder full of milk (straight from the cow) and fresh eggs. The tents are a set away from the farmhouse in two small clusters, but are private enough that they feel peaceful.
ALLER FARM Devon THE VIBE
The most striking thing about Aller Farm is that, although it is easy to see how wonderful it is for families, there is also a definite appeal for young couples and groups of friends wanting to get back to nature. The absence of technology, the excitement of successfully lighting the stove, the romance of the paraffin lanterns, all accompanied by a glass of wine makes this the perfect escape for a city-weary clutch of friends just as much as for families. Refreshing and adventurous with the massive advantage of being entirely comfortable, ‘glamping’ truly is the answer.
THE LOWDOWN
THE TENT
This is camping unlike any you have experienced before. If the thought of erecting a tent, not showering for four days and sleeping on the cold ground makes you shudder, but you are still in love with the romantic idea of a rural getaway, then ‘glamping’ might just be for you. The tents laid on at Feather Down Farms (although ‘tent’ doesn’t do them justice) are cabinlike in appearance and each contains a master bedroom, a bunk bed room and a cupboard bed (all of which can be premade if you so wish) as well as a working toilet, wood-burning stove (which warms the entire tent), a sink with running water and dining table. The decor is on the right side of twee and the rustic metal mugs and hearts carved out of the shutters are the perfect finishing flourishes.
Activities abound and include the opportunity to assist in the milking, feeding one of the young calves – the current calf is called Doris – by hand and retrieving eggs from the coup. The surrounding countryside is festooned with footpaths so there are countless walking opportunities. Closer to the tents is a small stream in which young children can build dams and adults can chill wine. A brick oven provides the perfect place for cooking pizzas and sitting around telling ghost stories before walking back to your cosy cupboard bed.
THE DAMAGE
Very reasonable, especially for a group. Prices start from £245 for a midweek stay (Monday-Friday). There are 7
tents in total (2 are frills tents) and each tent sleeps 6 (max. 5 adults); featherdown.co.uk

WILD AT HEART Lions and elephants and giraffes, oh my! Michael Kallenbach explores the wild wilderness of the Tanzanian Serengeti on horseback
I
t was our first morning riding to the Explore camp and we had been up since the crack of dawn. Here we were, now in the middle of the Serengeti plains, not far from the banks of the Grumeti River, and we had already begun to ache. By lunchtime, we needed a break; our joints, not used to the fast cantering alongside the giraffe, elephants and topi, were sore – yet the horses were fit and ready to go on all day. We dismounted and then suddenly our grooms were there to lead the horses to water and feed. We plonked ourselves in luxurious khaki chairs allowing the spring sunshine to fall on our faces. There were four riders in our group – Sophy, Eve, Lucinda and myself. I had been on several riding holidays in
Africa before so, while I thought I knew what to expect, I never imagined such luxury and comfort would come my way.
There’s also a whistle next to our bed in case a lion appears Lucinda, the weakest rider in our group, quickly decided that she wasn’t up to the fast pace of the horses. Instead, she opted to go by lorry and sat in the comfort of a Jeep as she viewed the game, while one of the back-up guides had little difficulty in leading her horse alongside his.
The mobile tents at Explore had been set up prior to our arrival, where an array of dainty tea cakes were waiting for us – similar to those exquisite creations served at Fortnum and Mason – and drinks of cranberry juice mixed with ginger ale. We were given a typically warm South African greeting by Julius Schuld, the manager of the camp, and Ian Boucher, chef extraordinaire. Originally from Cape Town, Ian is the first to admit that he is ‘dead scared’ of lions and hopes they never come near his tent at night. But despite this phobia, at mealtimes he is fearless, proudly announcing what he has prepared for dinner and always using locally grown ingredients. For instance, he explains, ‘You will get carrot soup, but not with caviar.’ It was hard to imagine anyone in our group expecting

caviar, yet the spacious tents themselves were luxurious in every possible way – from fluffy towels and dressing gowns to hot running water and a flushing toilet. Our mobile camp even had its own electricity. There was also a whistle next to our bed in case we suddenly imagined a lion had come to snuggle up next to us in the night, but as Julius assured us soon after arrival, ‘No one has ever had use of it.’ In any event, a guard stood watch over my tent every night from dawn to dusk, so there was really nothing to fear. Of course, we were all there for the riding, not to snuggle up with lions. The horse I was allocated was called Katavi, so named after the country’s third largest national park, located along the rift escarpment in west Tanzania. A proud 17- hand ex-eventer bought from a dealer in Johannesburg, Katavi had come via a spell in Zimbabwe to join his other Swahili-named stable mates. 63

TRAVEL
As we cantered through the short brown grass, darting in between the fallen acacia trees, Katavi and I quickly bonded. This was his first safari, I was later to learn from one of our expert guides, the South African born Alison Mundy. Having previously worked in Botswana and Zimbabwe, there was nothing about horses she didn’t know. Ali was in charge of the stables and they were among the most immaculate and pristine I have ever seen. What’s more, the horses were execllently cared for, having their temperatures taken twice a day with several grooms on hand who could double up as farriers if and when the need should arose. In our search for game we would often canter alongside giraffe, zebra, ostrich, eland and topi, a type of antelope similar to the hartebeest. We never came across lion or leopard, but thankfully this wasn’t my first – and I hope not last – African horseback safari. After two nights at the Explore camp, we rode onto Serengeti House for the final stretch of our trip, an exclusive-use retreat. Here I was forced to say a fond farewell to Katavi, who had carried me so safely on my adventures. There were a few consolations, however – we arrived at Serengeti House just before lunch and were able to witness about 20 elephants drinking at the tiny pond about 15 feet from where we were sitting. Later that afternoon, as I packed my bags to fly back home, I was told by Gregory, one of the staff members, not to venture near my bungalow alone as
an elephant was lurking outside. Armed for all eventualities, he accompanied me to safety so that I could retrieve my possessions. Two days later, he sent me an email. ‘The elephants have never shown up again, but we did have an old buffalo – it charged one of the staff doing some maintenance work. But otherwise everything is fine and nobody was hurt.’ I smiled as I read this, but that night I dreamed that Katavi and I had cantered away from the elephants, out of trouble, back into safety and, of course, luxury.
7 nights in Tanzania from £4,660 per person based on two people sharing including Kenyan Airways economy flights, all internal flights, full board accommodation (including three nights at Serengeti House), park fees and game drives/rides. PURE Gemma Billington discovers an island paradise at the Conrad Maldives resort

W
e arrived at Rangali Island, the home of the spectacular Conrad Maldives resort, in style – aboard a petite seaplane piloted by a relaxed, barefoot captain. It was an exciting yet slightly more rustic journey after the supreme comfort of a Business Class flight with Turkish Airlines, who recently launched their Maldives flight path via Istanbul. I immediately recognised the scenery below as if taken directly from the pages of a brochure; the semi-submerged islands and reefs dotted sparsely across the vast Indian Ocean. On a hot yet overcast day, the hazy sky and endless water seemed to join up as one, which we slowly and dreamily cruised through. I was swift ly brought back to earth (mentally, thankfully, and not literally) when we entered a heavy cloud and the tiny plane rattled enthusiastically. Luckily the pilot remained, like the ocean, absolutely calm. All agitated nerves were swift ly appeased with a warm welcome and a cold flannel when we arrived at the gorgeous resort – two separate islands connected by a wooden bridge.
The precarious nature of the Maldives (it’s the planet’s lowest country at just 1.5 metres above sea level) has been well documented and sits in contention with its unspoiled, honeymoon paradise cliché. Though it is a touch surreal to be essentially deserted amidst a fragile archipelago miles from anywhere in the heart of the Indian
Ocean, it’s incredibly easy to give in to its abundant natural beauty. The resort has every kind of expected luxury on-tap, but its clever design quietly understands that no mod con could begin to compare to what you’ll find outside your bedroom window. Even the most ardent City worker will soon resign their BlackBerry to the hotel room. The Conrad has plenty of activities to keep you entertained, should you tire of il dolce far niente; from a wealth of spa treatments to water sports, a kids club, excursions to your very own desert island and even a whimsical looking threeman submarine available for hire. We were informed, quite candidly, that Maldivian cuisine isn’t exactly sought after, but fortunately there are ten outstanding restaurants to choose from at the resort that cater to the varied nationalities of its guests. A fabulous champagne and lobster buffet romantically set on the beach is a highlight, but the intimate nine-course Japanese feast prepared in front of your very eyes at the Koko Grill restaurant is simply not to be missed. By far the most spectacular activity on offer, however, is the opportunity to swim with whale sharks,

the world’s largest fish (don’t worry, they’re vegetarians) through the Maldives Whale Shark Research Project (MWSRP). The Conrad has sponsored the MWSRP for over five years and the excursion is a way of assisting their research into these vulnerable gentle giants. It’s a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you don’t fancy getting your toes wet (then you may very well be in the wrong place), the ethereal manta rays that are attracted to the lit-up bridge at night are a must-see. These enormous, ghostly creatures swim graceful figures of eight and are a joy to behold. We spent four incredible days in the Maldives – a country that, before I went, had resigned to being the sole prerogative of newlyweds. This is a country that needs to be seen to be believed. Forget what you think you know and lose yourself to its spellbinding natural beauty which will – to dip well and truly back into the book of clichés – create memories that will last a lifetime.
Daily rates at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island start from $625 (approx £388) plus taxes, based on two adults sharing a Beach Villa. To make a reservation or for more information, visit conradmaldives.com or call 00 960-668-0629. Return fares from London Heathrow to Male from £642 for economy class or £1,822 for business class, including taxes and charges. For more information, visit turkishairlines.com or call 0844 800 6666.

Red Hook from the Rushmore Group is outstanding. They serve simple, amazing food that excels without overcomplicating. Surf & Turf is the best option on the menu.
The traditional London pubs located in and around Clerkenwell are great, specifically The Gunmakers. It is an ideal bolt-hole that offers excellent beer and pub food.
I love the Flintlock at the Zetter Townhouse. The unique taste is from the dandelion and burdock bitters, Fernet Branca and gunpowder tea tincture.

I am buying a fl at which has an extra bedroom in the loft. I have been told by the seller that he doesn’t have Building Regulation approval of this work. Should I be concerned? In
this case, yes. Building Regulations are there to ensure that structural work is carried out in accordance with the prevailing regulations. As far as loft conversions are concerned, it is absolutely vital to ensure that the works incorporate adequate fi reproofi ng and means of escape in case of fi re measures. The council’s general period within which it can take enforcement action is just one year and if
the work in question was something more minor then you might want to take a view provided your surveyor was happy with the structural integrity of the property. However, when it comes to loft conversions, the crucial thing I think is the health and safety aspect.
ASK THE EXPERTS Contact property partner
If a loft is being used as a bedroom, then I think issues of enforcement are almost irrelevant because the overriding factor would be the safety of the people sleeping there. I would suggest that you ask the seller to contact the council’s Building Control Department and ask them to inspect the property and hopefully they will issue a Regularisation Certificate which will prove that the work has been done to the necessary standard.

e have seen an increase in demand for new homes in Shoreditch and the City throughout the course of this year. This is partly due to the March budget unveiling a number of measures to support mortgage lending, but also because both investors and end users are looking at new build properties favourably. This can be put down to the increasing level of build quality and services, which reflect the fast paced lifestyle incorporated into the area. Now more than ever, developers are making their mark on east London, with a large number securing sites on the fringe of the City such as Aldgate, Whitechapel, Commercial Road and further East. Given the construction of Crossrail, these ever more popular pockets of East London are seeing an increase in capital growth and are incredibly popular as buy-to–let investments. However, prime Shoreditch still has a lot to give, with smaller schemes scattered around the district and the unveiling of the proposed plans for ‘Shoreditch Village’- a large mixed use scheme incorporating offices and high end retail, which will be situated behind the overground station. The trend will continue for the rest of the year, with more residential schemes in the pipeline across East London.

IN THEIR OWN
WORDS MARK LAWRINSON
Sales Director: Edmund Cude Group Photography: Rebecca Noonan
I
love London and the property market here is just so diverse. Having covered the majority of London, I have come across areas that, to this day, still take my breath away and offer something new every time I go there. Even after having spent 12 years in sales, my interest in property hasn’t waned a bit and I’m grateful that as Sales Director at Edmund Cude I get the opportunity to view all that London’s property market has to offer. We recently sold an old church, which is available for flat conversion in W14, and it’s amazing to think that somebody can come home to that unique mixture of old and new on a daily basis. For me, that’s what London is about – steeped in history yet ever-changing and never boring. I recently had a mate visit from Scotland and he wanted to have a weekend’s experience of London. On one of the mornings we started with breakfast at Roast at Borough Market, one of the best breakfasts I have had had since moving to London, and I can highly recommend the tattie scone (which my mate could see the irony in!). After drifting round over 100 stalls we then walked across the street to one of the modern marvels of the 21st Century, the Shard. Centuries apart yet both iconic and amazing in their own ways. Each area in London has its own story to tell and having recently launched our new sales office on Museum Street, I am currently experiencing a new story in Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury is fantastic and one of the most diverse area I have come across, made up of picturesque garden squares, fantastic amenities like the Riding House Café (pictured) and some of the most stunning Georgian architecture I have seen in this city. My clients range from people who have lived
here for most of their lives and may be selling properties in excess of £10 million to overseas investors buying purely as investment, or for their children who may one day be studying here. We then also have a large influx of students looking to rent, hardly unsurprising given the large number of educational institutions in the area. Edmund Cude is well established in the area as the go-to lettings agent but we have broadened our offering to cover sales following the acquisition of established London-based brand Bushells in July 2012. It’s fair to say that we’re an old hand when it comes to the London property market and the Bloomsbury location was a logical and obvious choice for the first of our five planned sales openings. As for the market, stock levels are low and demand is high, yet this year we have seen something new - an element of confidence from people within the market. Most importantly, this is from the buyers themselves, and this is confirmed by regular reports from our banks that mortgage transaction levels are up and at the highest since the crash. The lack of stock, however, remains the same and this, along with a strong appetite from buyers to get onto the property ladder, will mean we will continue to see house prices rise. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some areas of London achieve double digit growth in 2013 alone. London’s status as one of the best cities in the world makes the property here one of the best tradable commodities available and one of the most prized assets to own. 020 7428 5373; edmundcude.com

n a competitive London property market, it’s tough to stand out amongst the crowd. Location and curb appeal are essential factors for real estate and this has never been more true than for estate agents online. Keatons is a forward thinking agent in terms of how they approach marketing, and during the last two years they have shifted their emphasis towards digital. Through their investments over the last year, Keatons have attracted much attention with a 120% increase in traffic on their site, proving that their innovative approach towards digital media has paid off. Naturally this has tremendously increased their business growth and presence in the city’s fast paced East London estate agency market. Adhering to the digital marketing gospel, Keatons’ emphasis on content, SEO and social media packs a punch well above their portfolio weight. Even more exciting is the fact that the newest version of the Keatons website, soon to be released, will feature advanced search features that are second to none. This will greatly enhance user experience with improved navigation and advanced search options. The website will give Keatons’ users useful information and advice across the site that will have you covered from making a plan to move, through to the type of people that live in your new neighbourhood. You will be able to search for your new home not only by traditional means, but by terms more relevant to London life including “Rental Investment Opportunities”, “Commuter Friendly Areas” or even “Family Friendly Areas”. What’s more, you can search by décor and features of the property – such as “Period Property”, “School Proximity” and you can even find out whether the property has a Jacuzzi! The site not only makes it easier to find the perfect property but keeps Keatons’ customers coming back for more. Keatons.com is filled with useful guides and information about the property process and the area your property is in. The myKeatons dashboard, which stores all of your property related buying selling renting landlords about us the keatonsmakes blog press call us paperwork, property searches, alerts area andguides documentation, managing the property process easier than ever before. Insiders in the Keatons camp tell us that this isn’t the end of the technical revolution: the next product to go live will allow you to view and secure your new home through an iPad or smart phone whilst on the move (subject to internet connection of course!). As Home a result, this is now starting to make agents sit up and listen to the home > sales > property search philosophy of this London agent, which is “Content is King”.
