EDITOR’S LETTER JULY 2013
W
e’re focused on fitness this month. For those of us who have finally gotten round to booking that much-needed holiday (after covering ourselves up like Michael Jackson for what seems an eternity) the big reveal of one’s pasty self can seem... well, downright daunting. Now is the time to get primped and preened, but fear not. We’ve put together a guide to holistic health, perfect for your summer body overhaul, and included yoga tips from Good Vibes founder and director, Nahid de Belgeonne. The bikini body countdown is sorted. More health and beauty inspo comes in the form of our ultimate Spa Guide, a round-up of Absolutely’s top European destinations for rest and rejuvenation. From wine-based treatments in Bordeaux to Spartan stays in Lombardy, there’s something for everyone, whether you want to detox or beautify, cleanse or simply kick back. Nowadays, it’s all about enlisting on a boutique bootcamp (adding soul to your body workout) to get your rear in gear and you well on your way to becoming a golden girl (by which I mean athletic and glowing rather than skinny); with that in mind, we feature the Feng Sushi summer diet, which shows you how to shed pounds without doing much at all... seriously. Speaking of golden girls, this issue we managed to bag an interview with international superstar (and native East Ender, natch) Leona Lewis. Not only does she have a killer body (and of course, a killer voice), she’s summer’s very own poster girl, looking incredible as she finishes her UK tour at Kew the Music festival this month. She was as lovely as can be, and still lives in Hackney. Enjoy the issue and the sunshine (we live in hope).

A note on... HACKNEY COHOUSING PROJECT The rapid gentrification of parts of Hackney has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for long-time residents, who have seen property prices rocket even as other elements of local life have improved. It’ll be interesting to see how local government preserves the diversity of the borough; in the meantime, one bunch of savvy Hackneyites have come up with their own solution: a cohousing project that will see them collectively build and own 12-15 homes. The aim is to create affordable private dwellings within a community founded on cooperation and sustainability. hackneycohousingproject.co.uk

#FESTIVALFRESH
Glasto may be over but there’s still a (frankly, less messy) slew of other festivals happening at a park near you. Besides, one-dayers are better for staying fresh and getting your street-style on. To this end, I’ve chosen a simple tee from Mario Testino’s limited edition Mate Collection, paired with classic denim shorts; this slouchy pair come ready-ripped from J Brand, adding the necessary touch of grunge. Finally, I’ve kept it casual with these neat Penelope Chilvers Siesta sandals - because let’s face it, wellies without mud look wrong and overdone. Now all you need is the perfect playlist for full-on

FILM The Bling Ring (Dir. Sophia Coppola)
The Old Vic Throughout July
Modern culture is celebrity-obsessed. Whether following a celeb on Twitter or stalking T-Swift’s every move via blogs, news outlets and social networks, almost all of us are guilty of the new, technologicallyenhanced approach to fandom - and director Sofia Coppola’s new movie sets out to explore our infatuation with fame. A hit at Cannes, the film tells the true story of the so-called ‘Bling Ring’, a gang of Los Angeles teenagers who burgled the Hollywood homes of the celebs and socialites they adored. Starring Emma Watson, the movie passes stinging judgment on society’s obsession with elites. From 5 July, Vue, 36 Parkfield Street, N1; myvue.com

Tennessee Williams’ brilliant play comes storming onto the London stage under the direction of Olivier Awardwinner Marianne Elliott. Starring Sex and the City alum Kim Cattrall and War Horse veteran Seth Numrich, the haunting tale follows ageing actress Alexandra Del Lago, whose failed attempt at a career comeback sends her scurrying back into drug abuse, alcoholism and the arms of a much younger man. A perfect example of Williams’ unerring grasp of human flaws and small-town foibles, this production promises to be searing, shocking and profound. 103 The Cut, London, SE1; oldvictheatre.co.uk

CLERKENWELL VINTAGE FASHION FAIR
Fine Vintage
Last month saw over 50 dealers in fine vintage apparel and authentic designer pieces come together for the Clerkenwell Vintage Fashion Fair – which was a roaring revival success. An alterations expert was on hand to ensure garments were the right fit while a vintage hair salon dished out styling tips. Live acts entertained the crowds and the tea room served up lip-smacking refreshments. Meanwhile on Upper Street, the fabulous House of Wolf transformed into the House of Style for a unique shopping event showcasing 12 British brands brought together by teastained Lil and Natalie Teare Jewellery.

Helen Baron gets up close and personal with Leona Lewis
I
was excited to speak to Leona Lewis – if you weren’t already aware, she’s a pretty big deal. Seven years have passed since she won the third series of X Factor, and Simon Cowell’s protégé remains the best example of what can happen when reality shows go right. In fact, Lewis is the poster girl for every wannabe who hangs his or her hopes of stardom on the public’s ferocious appetite for talent show veterans. It’s surprising to be reminded just how steep Lewis’s ascent has been, especially in comparison to other winners of the show. Where are Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward and Joe McElderry now? Alexandra Burke and Matt Cardle have had hits but neither have crossed over like Lewis. Only fellow X Factor alumni One Direction have reached similar levels of success, and the differentiating factor is clear: Lewis and 1D cracked America. Indeed, Lewis became the first British female in over two decades to top the American charts with her single, Bleeding Love (while at the same time holding the number one position in the UK): not bad for a girl from east London. Though chart positions are taken a little less seriously these days, for a talent show winner turned pop princess with considerable TV exposure, the figures still reign supreme and Leona Lewis can boast some pretty impressive figures. Following the success of Bleeding Love (released on Simon Cowell’s own label, Syco), Lewis’s debut album, Spirit, became the fastest-selling album in the UK and,
incredibly, the fourth fastest-selling album of all time. It topped the charts in seven other countries, including – most momentously – the USA. A special edition of Spirit was later released that included extra songs Forgive Me, Misses Glass and her smash hit cover of Snow Patrol’s Run. The result? You guessed it: it topped the UK charts. To date, Lewis’ debut LP has sold over 6.5 million copies. With a start like that, the future was never in doubt, and Lewis has continued to chart well with subsequent albums; she’s currently touring her fourth, Glass Heart. Between hit singles and world tours, she even found time to record the theme for James Cameron’s
hoping to dish some dirt on Simon Cowell, asking what impact she thinks the media mogul has had on the industry. He’s clearly served up big pop acts during his prolific career and arguably has a stranglehold on the charts, but Leona has nothing but praise for her mentor. ‘Simon’s had a huge impact. He brought talent shows to the forefront and they’ve taken off globally.’ This leads to my next question: whether it is easier or harder for emerging artists to break through in the current climate of music industry uncertainty and wider economic downturn. ‘I feel like in a way it’s easier because of social media; artists have more control over their output because you don’t have to be on a record label.’ Still, the fact remains that Lewis is on a record label, and a supportive one at that - stateside, she reputedly earned a fivealbum deal worth $5 million. To what does she attribute her global success? ‘Knowing what I want and sticking to my vision,’ she says, without a moment’s hesitation – although we both know that doesn’t work out for everyone. I decide to probe: anything else? ‘My music has mass appeal,’ she says ‘my audience spans all ages.’ For my part, I tell her I think it comes back to her singularly powerful voice and vocal range (she is often compared to singers of the stature of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston). Ever her humble self, she will only say that she has ‘amazing songwriters’, citing producer Ryan Tedder, who has worked on all her albums, as having helped her to find her voice. Another inspired move saw Lewis work with indie writers and material, including
‘Simon’s had a huge impact. He brought talent shows to the forefront and they’ve taken off globally’ Avatar – the song was later nominated for a Golden Globe. In a very short space of time, Leona Lewis has experienced truly mind-boggling success, so I start by asking her what she learned from her X Factor experience. Her reply is surprisingly levelheaded. ‘I won in 2006 but in reality I’ve been in the industry much longer. I came out of the BRIT School, I had a production deal and had been in studios. I was always striving to get a big record deal, so it came through doing the show. I’ve learned so much from being a signed artist.’ In retrospect, this makes sense. Leona has been quietly carving out a reputation for herself as a ‘discreet’ superstar. I dig deeper,

Craigie Dodds (Rizzle Kicks) and Matt Hales (Aqualung). Certainly, the Snow Patrol cover won her a legion of new fans. A child of the iPod generation, Lewis has managed to span genres and show that big songs – especially the ballads for which she is best known – can transcend cultural boundaries. Perhaps another key to Lewis’ success is that her voice speaks for itself: it’s big enough that she has no need for a big, public personality. That’s not to suggest that she’s boring: quite the opposite. In fact, it’s far more boring to watch successful female artists become stereotypical divas, monstrous corporate machines continually splashed across the papers and causing drama after drama (almost certainly believing their own hype). Leona Lewis is most likely to be found speaking about her charity work. An almost lifelong vegetarian, she’s a supporter of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Humane Society, and she’s also newly inaugurated as a brand ambassador for The Body Shop, her earnings from which will be donated to Hopefields
Animal Sanctuary. I wonder at the reasons behind her altruistic sensibility, but it seems it just comes naturally. ‘I feel like I’m in a position to speak out against things I believe to be wrong,’ she says. ‘I just can’t turn a blind eye to it. I get flak about not supporting human issues but there are
the Music festival (alongside the legendary Blondie, no less) and she admits that she’s excited for the gig. ‘I’ll keep things similar to the show I’m touring at the moment because people are responding really well to it... but I’ll throw in a few surprises too. I think the audience will love it. I’m so, so excited.’ She talks me through her preperformance rituals, telling me that, ‘Singing songs every night is very tiring, but my voice gets stronger and improves on the road; I love to run on the same day, to get my lungs going. I never used to, but now I’m conscientious not to over-sing or talk too much. And I always drink manuka honey and lemon.’ Reassessing celebrities as ‘down to earth’ is more than a little cliché – and often altogether misleading. But there’s no doubt about it in this instance: Leona Lewis has her feet firmly on the ground. It seems that the girl with the sensational voice is loved and respected for all the right reasons – and that’s as real as it gets.
‘I’m in a position to speak out against things I believe to be wrong... I can’t turn a blind eye to it’ so many things to support and I’ve chosen to speak out for animals. It doesn’t mean I don’t think there are many other issues to speak out about but one person can’t give voice to all of them.’ An insightful and touching comment and one that leads me to appreciate Leona as a star in her own right – not someone willing to simply do what’s expected of her. We finish up by talking about her upcoming headline show at the annual Kew

THE BIG HITTERS THIS IS MY MOMENT
Lewis’ 2006 debut single, A Moment Like This, was originally recorded by Kelly Clarkson. Lewis’s version broke the world record for download volume, being downloaded 50,000 times in under 30 minutes.
ONE LOVE
Bleeding Love was the first single to be taken from Lewis’ second album, Spirit. It became the first single by a British female artist to top the US Billboard Top 100 in over twenty years.
DOUBLE TROUBLE Leona’s first two albums (released in 2007 and 2009) have collectively sold over 10 million copies worldwide and remained at the top of the charts in places as far removed as New Zealand and Austria for weeks on end.

WITNESS THE FITNESS
Nahid de Belgeonne gives expert advice on how to get the most out of yoga How many times a week should you do yoga to reap the full benefit of practice? Like most things in life, what you put in exponentially increases what you get out. An hour of yoga practice daily would have remarkable effects on your health and wellbeing but for most of us finding that time and space can be a real challenge. A regular weekly class is the place to start; once you’ve committed to that and it’s become part of your weekly routine, add an extra class. You’ll find that two classes a week start to make a big difference to how you feel in body and mind. Your flexibility and breathing will have improved. Depending on the kind of yoga you’ve taken up, you may also see gains in your strength and muscle tone. Most importantly, you’ll have begun to connect better with your relaxation response, encouraging more activity within the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, which will help to counteract the detrimental effects of daily low level stress. Once you’ve made that commitment to your two classes a week, begin to practise at home when you can in between classes. All you need in a clear space, your mat and that good intention!
Is it important to combine cardio exercise with yoga? You’ve done a dynamic and incredibly challenging yoga class, Bikram or Ashtanga, and you’re pretty convinced that you’ve done all the cardio you need; yoga’s the full package, right? Studies have shown that yoga is not the best way to improve the health of the cardiovascular system, so it’s very important to combine your yoga practice with traditional cardio – running and cycling come out on top in the cardio sweepstakes. Here’s the stats: heart rate during a strong Ashtanga practice increases by over 30 beats from the resting heart rate, (which can vary from 60-100 beats per minute) whereas in a very gentle yoga class heart rate is only increased by around 15 beats per minute. Compare that to the increase in heart rate that occurs during a running session, which is around 152-166 bpm! It’s really important to let your yoga class nourish you. Find a class that you can move, flow and breathe well in, and most importantly learn to relax deeply, considered by many to be yoga’s greatest gift, which in turn lowers the heart rate; the key to a balanced nervous system.
Nahid’s summer tip Don’t just invest in your exterior image this summer, feeling truly good about yourself comes from within. Practise yoga or meditation to tune your mind AND body. Nahid is the owner of Good Vibes Fitness, 14-16 Betterton Street, WC2;goodvibesfitness.co.uk
5 WAYS TO GET BACK ON TRACK 1 Commit to short sessions to ease you back in. Little and often is a great way to get fit. Just five minutes a day over one week would be a great place to start. 2 Grab a friend. People who work out together are much more likely to stay on track with their fitness goals. Running with a friend motivates you. It’s much harder to flake out when you know that they’re counting on your company. 3 Make it fun! Put some music on and dance. Dancing is great cardio and perfect for those who shy away from competitive sports. Dancing not your bag? Grab a skipping rope and jump! You’ll be amazed by how quickly your heart rate goes up. 4 Love gizmos? Invest in a monitoring bracelet that works out if your daily needs are being met. They’re amazingly accurate and really helps you to see that running up that flight of stairs makes a difference! We like Up by Jawbone. 5 Always wanted to try a climbing wall, aerial yoga or a half marathon? Grab the challenge with both hands, giving yourself a reachable target in a realistic time frame.
10 MINUTE TONER This Pilates move is simple, can be made progressively challenging and requires no warm-up. Begin on all fours, wrists under elbows, long biceps, index fingers pointing forwards and weight even between the hands, knees under hips, knees inner hip distance apart. Become aware of the natural curves of your spine, maintain length at the neck and the abdominals. On an exhale, float the right arm forwards, keeping the shoulder moving back and down and integrated in the upper back. Repeat on the left. Make more challenging by lifting the opposite leg, maintaining symmetry through the hips. Continue alternating in this way eight times then lift and hold for five breaths with good form and tone through the abs, breathing steadily. For an extra challenge, make pulsing movements with the legs for another five breaths before you change sides and repeat. 17

MY STYLE
Cleo B will unveil her AW13 collection at Andaz Liverpool Street this month; she shares her inspirations Favourite holiday destination
It has to be Barbados. There are amazing resorts and restaurants and you can jump in a Jeep, explore the island, eat at local cafes and bathe on any beach you choose.
Favourite designer House of Holland (left) and Holly Fulton are two of my absolute favourites.
Style icon
Most treasured possession Most inspiring experience
In 2008 I spent two weeks touring India with interior designer Nina Campbell. I spent time in her embroiderer’s factory, visited her suppliers and rode elephants.
Favourite shoe of your own design
My gold Sucker MCs cassette tape heels which come in a rainbow of bright coloured suedes (above). I also love Tribeca, which is a classic Cleo B wedge shoe boot from Spring Summer 2010 (right). It has intricate criss-cross detailing down the front, which I took from the facade of an Art Deco building in New York.
Honey B – my miniature wire-haired dachshund. She is a star and constant companion. She is also the face of our new dog collar collaboration with accessories brand Beauchamps, launching in March.
I don’t have a particular style icon. I love colour and I have a bold sense of style, so I find it’s influenced by anyone and anything. However, if I was allowed to steal anyone’s wardrobe, it would be Rihanna’s.
Favourite piece of art
My favourite painting is Egret by James Aldridge (left). I received it as a 21st birthday present from my parents. At the time, his work was typically dark, creepy even, often involving skulls, black crows and dark woods, but this piece was an anomaly and I fell in love with it straight away. cleob.com

The insider Arabella Preston’s make-up tips from behind the scenes
T
he Spring Summer catwalks were brightened by swatches of vibrant neon make-up. What better way to step from winter into spring than with a splash of fluoro flair? Don’t be fooled: this isn’t ‘80s throwback neon, rather something cool, modern, clean and graphic. Your canvas is key here, and beautifully exfoliated, glowing skin allows you to get away with a shock of bright colour. Try Astalift’s new Intense Replumping Moisture Mask to give your skin a youthful boost and allow it to recharge. Although, that said, bright colour is also brilliant for drawing attention from unwanted blemishes and imperfections. If you have a slash of pink neon on your lips, that’s all people will be looking at. Trust us. MAC Senior Artist Rebecca Butterworth advises using matte lip colours ‘that can be built up from a subtle stain to an intensely bright lip,’ pressing a matte neon pigment like MAC Bright Fuchsia on top for added intensity. If you simply want to dip a tentative toe in the trend, then a neon nail (these OPI polishes are spot on) will add a pop of colour that gives you an instant wardrobe update. But why stop there? Charlotte Stockdale’s latest offering for Jo Malone is a neon-dipped Red Roses cologne bottle – perfect for embracing the look. Now go on – turn on those neon lights.

HEALTH
Let’s Get
Physical
Complement the healing process with these popular alternative therapies OSTEOPATHY
PURE SPORTS INJURY CLINIC THE LOW-DOWN Osteopaths work from the principle that wellbeing depends upon the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. Sessions seek to restore the body to a state of balance, replacing the use of drugs or surgery (where possible) with physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase mobility and relieve muscle tension. THE RESULTS An initial consultation at Pure reveals that I have a slight curve in my upper back (rather than my lower back, as thought), which is causing me to lean more to the right and hunch in the shoulders. As I am not currently experiencing pain, Daniel Cohen advises I continue my regular yoga sessions and work on strengthening my core. This will address the misalignment in my spine, supporting the upper back and shoulders. For prices call 08447 700 800, 2 Cabot Square, E14; puresportsmed.com
ACUPUNCTURE THE HERBAL INN
THE LOW-DOWN Acupuncture is said to serve as both a treatment and a preventative therapy. It is meant to stimulate blood flow, improving overall health and helping to treat a number of ailments including hypertension, headache, sciatica and morning sickness – as well as those which more acute pain. The Herbal Inn specialises in acupuncture and cupping – a healing therapy that’s become a firm favourite with celebs (Jennifer Aniston recently turned up to a premiere with the tell-tale circular marks on her back). THE RESULTS After an initial consultation, we agree to work on my digestion and circulation. By understanding the key tenets of qi, Dr Peng looks to restore the natural harmonic state of mind, body and soul. Penetrating my skin with needles in specific points of the body, the flow of qi is opened up; the results are noticeable after one session – however, ongoing treatment to align the balance and detox the body is recommended. 47 Upper Street, N1; herbal-inn.com
LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
THE HEALTHY LIVING CLINIC THE LOW-DOWN A massage that stimulates the lymphatic system (the body’s secondary circulatory system), improving metabolism and the elimination of toxins while boosting the immune system. It’s an ideal treatment for those suffering from any swelling and can help with healing after surgery, but is equally good for relaxation, improving circulation, problem skin, cellulite, dysfunctional respiratory systems and low energy levels.
REFLEXOLOGY LIZ GARNER
THE LOW-DOWN Reflexology refers to the application of pressure to the feet and hands using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques; the ‘reflex points’ touched are mapped to corresponding parts of the body and various associated tensions and maladies. A ‘healing art’, reflexology is relaxing but should not be mistaken for a foot massage: it employs far gentler micro-movements to create a response within the body.
THE RESULTS This gentle massage really revives the body. Working the lymphatic fluid towards the drainage ducts, (rather than focusing on the muscular or skeletal aspects of the body), it is recommended for those with metabolism concerns and is often used in conjunction with a detoxing programme.
THE RESULTS My therapist, Liz Garner, talks through any issues we can work on. Reflexology is commonly used to help with numerous symptoms specific to women (PMS, menopause, infertility, pregnancy and traumatic birth experience being just a few of them), and Liz identifies a lot of activity in the pituitary gland, indicative of hormonal imbalance, though more sessions are needed to address the problem fully.
See the website for more details, 282-284 St Paul’s Road, N1; thehealthylivingcentre.co.uk

Fast-track your child’s healthcare When it comes to making children better, The Portland Hospital has the highest levels of paediatric expertise and the most advanced technology in the UK. Discover how your child can benefit from the country’s leading experts in children’s health today. Story by Stacey Jackson
C
ommon sense tells you that, if your child gets ill, the best person to treat them is a leading paediatric consultant experienced in their condition.
Our dedicated children’s unit is home to the largest group of private paediatricians in the UK, covering over 50 different clinical specialties. They are among the best in the world at diagnosing and treating both common and complex childhood conditions from birth to age 18. Using the very latest technologies, they treat over 40,000 children each year, ranging from routine check-ups to extremely rare and complex cases. Many of our consultants hold senior posts at leading NHS trust hospitals such as Great Ormond Street and St Mary’s Hospital. They’re supported by a team of experienced children’s health professionals, including specialist children’s nurses and play specialists.
We don’t treat any adult patients in our children’s unit, so your child’s hospital experience will be completely tailored to their needs. We find that this can relieve your child’s anxiety about visiting hospital and help them to make a speedy recovery.
Rapid appointments Don’t wait. For same day and next day appointments, including evenings and Saturdays, call 020 7390 8203.
When you’re thinking about private healthcare for your child, safety will of course be an important consideration. Do bear in mind that some private hospitals don’t offer any on-site critical care facilities. Our children’s unit is fully equipped with the latest medical technology and facilities. Should the need arise, we have a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Baby Unit staffed by a dedicated team of critical care experts. You’ll be pleased to know that you won’t need to join a queue for this exceptional service. Our convenient and rapid appointments give your child the care they need at a time that suits your family and your lifestyle, including during the summer holidays so none of the new school term will be missed.

ASK FOR Craniosacral Therapy THE LOWDOWN Using a feather-like
touch, a trained therapist ‘tunes into’ the patient’s body, searching for the inherent motions of muscles, organs and cranial bones, focusing on manipulating ‘primary respiration’ and the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. It may sound complicated, but this therapy – which developed out of osteopathy – feels like simplicity itself. The therapist’s aim is to pick up on rhythms of contraction and expansion in the body, identifying patterns of distress and smoothing out the flow of energy. The idea is that areas of pain are redistributed or ‘released’, thereby restoring a healthy balance and helping the body to heal. The treatment can be deeply relaxing and is believed by some to stimulate the body’s own stress and pain management resources. RESULTS Those who find it hard to relax may find that several sessions are required to address the stress patterns and discomfort in the nervous system. Others feel rejuvenated and replenished straight away. From £60 for 60 minutes
UNDER PRESSURE
ASK FOR Shiatsu THE LOWDOWN Shiatsu was developed
in Japan from the principles of Chinese medicine (shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese) and the practice is similar to acupuncture – the therapist analyses the body’s energy channels (known as meridians) and massages accordingly, helping to restore inner wellbeing.
Shine Holistic offers a wealth of beauty treatments and complementary therapies; Absolutely picks its three favourites for instant summer wellbeing
Despite its history and popularity, Chinese medicine often meets with scepticism, so I’m immediately taken aback when, soon after we begin, my therapist applies pressure to the stomach and asks if I suffer from headaches – I have done, since childhood. The treatment follows a set format, but is semi-tailored to each client and their particular ailments. It makes use of gentle, methodical pressure and stretches. RESULTS Shiatsu is designed to support your body’s natural healing ability, providing profound relief from numerous conditions and amounts to a highly relaxing (and all too fleeting) hour. From £60 for 60 minutes

ASK FOR Myofascial Release (MFR) THE LOWDOWN For those unfamiliar
with the practice, myofascial release aims to straighten out and release tension held in the web of connective tissue that runs throughout the body, linking all our
internal structures. This web is called the fascia and it actually contains 90% of our nerve endings, meaning that any physical trauma we suffer is registered there. It also means that pain we think is located in our muscles is very often actually due to a restriction of our fascia. The massage administered by Helen Brown, which aims to work out these tensions, can be intense – even painful – but the subsequent sense of release is something I have rarely experienced with traditional massage. Sitting at a desk all day means I have a tendency to hunch, but Helen’s deft manoeuvres open up the back. The momentary discomfort soon gives way to a deep relief. RESULTS Energising rather than relaxing, this is the perfect mid-week pick-me-up, particularly recommended for anyone suffering from localised, specific tensions. £60 for 60 minutes 52 Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 20 Newington Green, N16; shineholistic.co.uk 41

FOOD London Capital Club
This year, the London Capital Club celebrates its centenary with a gourmet extravaganza – Star Grazing. Each month until November, the club will host a different Michelin-starred chef from outside London, who will create (and oversee the first two days’ service of) a special menu. July sees Hywel Jones (of leading country house hotel and spa Lucknam Park) bringing his culinary expertise to the capital. Head to the website for more details on forthcoming residencies. 15 Abchurch Lane, EC4; londoncapitalclub.com
Little Fishy
Who doesn’t love fish and chips? The solid, golden dish so beloved of Brits dates back to the 17th century and is little short of a national treasure; now Des McDonald, former CEO of Caprice Holdings, is getting in on the act. McDonald has launched his own take on the classic chippy, serving up sustainable fish fresh from British waters and approved by the Marine Conservation Society. A selection of line-and-hook caught cod, plaice, haddock and pollock arrive daily from Brixham to be grilled or fried in the Fish & Chip Shop’s own-recipe batter, made with local Camden beer. Kids will love the fish finger butties, too. 189 Upper Street‚ N1;

PITT AND CUE
The Almeida
Martin Nisbet has joined the Almeida restaurant from West London’s Angelus. The culinary maestro brings new and contemporary flourishes to the menu, including ballotine of smoked ham hock with pistachio and pickled pear and vanilla cheesecake with rhubarb jelly, poached rhubarb and arctic roll. Some traditional elements will remain, of course, and every week will see a rotisserie Tuesday, when diners can enjoy a whole chicken and carafe of wine between two. All of which makes the restaurant our hot pick for pre-theatre dinner this month! Almeida Street; N1; almeida-restaurant.co.uk
In 2011, Jamie Berger launched Pitt Cue Co, slogging his guts out in an American BBQ food van with business partner Tom Adams. His successful startup got bigger and bigger until they had to move from their parking spot to join the big guns via a bricks-and-mortar establishment in Soho. To coincide with the launch of their first ever cookbook (recipes include signature dishes like pulled pork, crispy pickled shiitake and sticky bourbon and cola pudding), the boys will be holding a ‘How to Launch a Food Startup’ Guardian masterclass in King’s Cross next month. 11 August, 10am5pm, The Guardian, 90 York Way, N1; pittcue.co.uk
The Grill on the Market
Herb garden cocktails will be springing up at the Grill on the Market throughout July and August. Using herbs to enhance flavours is a trick as old as time, but herb-based cocktails makes for double the dining experience. The bar’s master mixologist has dug up some harmonious, herbaceous concoctions to tantalise taste buds. 2-3 West Smithfield, EC1; blackhouse.uk.com 43

Why should you go? With considerable expansion recently leading to their first international opening in Istanbul, Tom’s Kitchen are also launching in Canary Wharf this month. The restaurant works with British suppliers and is committed to fresh, ethically sourced ingredients. When should you go? Early birds catch much more than the worm at Tom’s Kitchen. Choose from dinerstyle booths or sit down at the communal tables in the deli. Made famous at the Chelsea and Somerset House establishments, the cult menu will include brunch classics such as eggs Benedict and brioche French toast with caramelised apples and cinnamon.

What’s the deal? A hotly anticipated relaunch of the Crown and Shuttle has seen the historic pub benefit from a new look. Having served two queens and a king, survived the Blitz and even served time as a notorious strip club, it last closed its doors twelve years ago. Now the exotic dancers are gone and the pub has reopened to the public. Why should you go? The renovation breathes a new lease of life into what could have been ‘just another pub’. A massive plus is the huge garden complete with Shuttle Bus kitchen and wood-burning oven, from which spring forth amazing wheat beer and poppy-seed flat-breads for use in the pub’s own sandwiches.

How does a Danish woman become one of London’s major sushi players? Absolutely meets Feng Sushi’s Silla Bjerrum to discuss sustainable fishing and healthy eating
47

I
n 2008, Silla Bjerrum was the first woman to be invited to the prestigious Seven Samurai Sushi Competition. That’s no mean feat, especially since she’s not even Japanese. The Danish-born sushi expert has also served as a judge for the competition twice, teaches regularly at Leith’s cookery school, Divertimenti and Billingsgate and is a leading voice on issues surrounding sushi and sustainability. She’s also a serious businesswoman, having launched the Feng Sushi chain that now has eight branches (the latest in West Hampstead), and is a founding member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, recently winning a Sustainable City Award and another from the Sustainable Restaurant Association for Innovation. Hers is a company with some highly ethical credentials and a dedication to both healthy eating and healthy fishing. Bjerrum is a busy woman. Recently appearing on Japanese TV talking about the crisis of endangered Blue fin tuna, she’s passionate about her causes and about sushi, which she first discovered in London almost 20 years ago. ‘I went for an interview at Nippon Tuk, owned by Jeremy Rose, in 1994. I fell in to sushi, but soon
discovered I had a flair for it.’ She saw immediate parallels between Danish and Japanese food, and soon abandoned her plans for an academic career for a life in sushi. ‘Japanese food is clean, simple flavours with a real focus on ingredients – not dissimilar to Nordic cuisine – and it has been so interesting to see the growth of Japanese food in the UK.’ Feng Sushi first opened on Fulham Road in 1999. ‘My then business partner Jeremy Rose and I wanted to do a good quality delivery sushi concept, while offering casual eat-in too. Over the years we have expanded organically. In 2010 the original shareholder group departed and Luke Johnson came on board as serious investor. Since then we have enhanced the business, in particular online delivery, and opened up to new projects: a delivery hub in Billingsgate Market and a gorgeous restaurant on West Hampstead’s West End Lane offering eat-in, takeaway and delivery. Our latest venture is a new design focusing on keeping the eat-in experience undisturbed by the delivery service.’ Running a business is very demanding, as everybody knows, so how does she manage any sort of work/life balance?

‘I would lie if I said this is easy, but I love my family and I love my job, so it is all about ensuring one does not exclude the other,’ says Bjerrum. ‘I think it can be useful for children to see that a parent has an important role outside the home which they enjoy, but in return it is important to switch off at home and be there for the kids and do things with them they like to do regularly. I do not always get it right, but parenthood is a wonderful challenge in life.’ Silla actively supports the Marine Stewardship Council and has become an authority on sustainable fishing. ‘All our fish is sustainably sourced, it is our ethos, conscience, our insurance for future deliveries and our knowledge that well-sourced sustainable fish simply tastes better.’ And health-wise, sushi is one of the best things for you. ‘It is a well-balanced meal of good carbs, right protein, the good fats, veg and omega 3 and omega 6. Sushi is also very good for portion control, leaving you satisfied but not bloated.’ For summer, Silla has devised a special three-day diet, which promises to kick start a healthy season by helping to get rid of cravings. She says: ‘It consists of complex crab, seaweed and protein, but not wheat, sugar or preservatives and is approximately 1,500 calories a day, so you will not starve, but be inspired to keep up with good eating habits.’

Food fans rejoice: Southeast London’s most iconic market just got a shiny new addition...
A
n elegant glass structure adjoining the venerable Green Market and opening out onto Borough High Street, the hall is billed as ‘a classroom, kitchen, orchard, function room, reception area, information hub and dining hall’. What that translates to is a beautiful city garden perfect for meeting friends and enjoying some of the market’s world-famous wares. But there’s more... The new space is not just an aesthetic triumph; it’s a living environment filled with herbs, hops, fruits and flowers that will be used in education programmes, workshops and tasting sessions. Over the last decade, Borough Market has pioneered ideas like sustainability, community involvement and the importance of local, ethical produce, and the Market Hall is proof that SE1’s finest foodie destination is as forward-thinking as ever. Borough Market opens Monday- Wednesday, 11am-2pm, Thursday 11am-5pm, Friday 12-6pm, Saturday 8am-5pm. 8 Southwark Street, SE1; boroughmarket.org.uk
DON’T MISS With its emphasis on quality and provenance, Borough paved the way for London’s foodie revolution. Here are three traders (among many) worth seeking out: Rubies in the Rubble Lipsmacking jams and chutneys made from perfectly delicious fruit and veg otherwise destined for the dump. Established by former hedge fund employee Jenny Dawson, the company fights unnecessary waste and employs people struggling to get into work.
Chegworth Valley Granddaddies of the artisan produce movement, Chegworth Valley produces incredible (and incredibly English) juices from fruit plucked from the orchards on the family farm in Kent.

PROMOTION
GOLDMAN & RANKIN P The secret to stylish interiors is revealed
eek inside the little black book of many a top interior designer and you’ll find the name Goldman & Rankin. The firm specialises in the creation of bespoke kitchens, wardrobes, studies and occasional furniture, and its approach – which combines an intuitive flair for design with the very highest production standards – has won it adoring fans across the industry. Now, with the opening of a beautiful new showroom in Kensal Rise, the secret is out, and it’s possible to explore the world of Goldman & Rankin for yourself. The showroom is a 500 square-foot treasury of ingenious design ideas and bespoke furnishings, the perfect space in which to discover the firm’s trademark blend of classic designs, traditional techniques and inspired modern flourishes. Every part of a Goldman & Rankin design is made in the UK using traditional methods and a wide variety of solid and veneer woods and complementary materials; the result is a range of unique interiors that are as desirable as they are practical. Company founder Nicholas Goldman grew up in a family of designers and worked as an interior designer himself before starting Goldman & Rankin in
2008. The business has gone from strength to strength ever since, and the Kensal Rise space has everyone excited. Goldman himself says that, ‘The showroom was the natural next step; it gives us a place to showcase our work and somewhere to invite new and existing clients to get a feel for what we offer. The local area is a hive of creativity and energy.’ Asked about trends for the months ahead, Goldman enthuses: ‘Metallics are a big trend right now and one that works beautifully in the kitchen. Textures, mixed materials and unusual finishes add definition to a kitchen, and are surprisingly easy to incorporate whether you’re planning a full refit or just want to update an existing design.’ Of course, visitors to the showroom can witness Goldman & Rankin’s take on new trends first-hand, as well as browsing other interior offerings including Aga cookers (the firm is an authorised dealer) and a forthcoming range of upholstered furniture. A welcome new addition to the buzzing Kensal Rise scene, then – and a new must-visit for the aesthetically inclined. Open Monday to Friday and weekends by appointment. 6A Regent Street, NW10; goldmanandrankin.com 63

Evian Resort France
By Arabella Preston
itting high above the shores of Lake Geneva in the French spa town of Evian, the serene Hotel Ermitage seems to float upon a cloud of well-being and tranquillity. From the moment I stepped into my room and opened the French doors to the clear lake air, I understood why the resort has been a Mecca for rest and recuperation for over 100 years. Taking the lift from my floor directly down to the hotel’s Spa Quatre Terres, I was transported to Bali via India and China through the dark wood decor and the healing hands of expert therapists. There’s a holistic focus – my massage therapist incorporated the use of healing crystals while giving me one of the best deep-tissue massages of my life. After recuperating on a soft bed with a glass of Evian – naturellement – I then spent the afternoon lazing in the spa’s Jacuzzi and steam room. The next morning the hotel’s dashing chauffeur took me down the hill to the lake and into the heart of the resort. I came, as others have been for centuries, to Les Thermes D’Evian to ‘take the waters’. This involved being pummelled by hydro jets (seriously enlivening) and being ‘rained on’ by heated Evian water while a therapist gave me an allover body massage. Evian cannot be rivalled for its blend of tranquillity, excellent food and winning service. Next time I’ll be returning with my family in tow to take advantage of the superlative Kids’ Resort with its own pool, tennis lessons, cooking workshops and much more.... The Mandarin’s signature therapies, including pampering foot treatments and revitalizing body scrubs are a popular choice, but the jewel in its crown is undoubtedly the Oriental Orchid, which delivers a soothing massage and a radiance facial, courtesy of classic beauty brand Guerlain. Eastern minimalism combined with chic touches, such as a subtle butterfly motif and a soothing star-studded sky in every spa suite, is the order of the day here. TRAVEL ESPA
Corinthia Hotel, London by Priscilla Pollara
S
ituated in a grand Victorian building just inches from the River Thames, the Corinthia is by far the most sumptuous hotel in all of London. The Spa certainly helps. ESPA may well be the world’s leading spa company, with several awards to its names and outposts all over the world, but the concept spa at the Corinthia, ESPA Life, is the first of its kind. It’s tailored to give you the ultimate in luxury spa experiences: there are lifestyle programmes to follow for anything from insomnia to pregnancy, intricate beauty treatments (for both men and women) and a vast nail studio and gym. Even the most basic of massages and facials last an hour, for the highly elaborate runthrough that beauticians afford every client is never rushed, and comfortably performed in the ultra-private spaceship-like treatment pods. The relaxation area greets you with heated marble chaise-longues, roaring fires and bathtubs for oil rub-downs, while there’s also an ethereal sleep pod, where a hanging fireplace warms a pitch-black room with cut-off sections replete with black and ruby cushions and dramatic velvet drapes for privacy. Afterwards, drag yourself up to The Lobby Lounge and indulge in the Afternoon Tea in the tranquil outdoor courtyard. Expect an endless flow of cakes, tea chosen from a dedicated three page long menu and plates of triangle sandwiches so elegant, you won’t want to actually eat them. Doubles from £450 per night. no refined sugars. Satisfying and flavoursome dishes such as roasted chicken breast with ceps and organic red rice followed by poached pear with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce belie their low fat and calorie content to deliver a truly delicious meal. The Four Day Better Aging programme at La Réserve Geneva costs from CHF 5500 (approx. £3620) and includes accommodation, all consultations and treatments and three meals a day at Café Lauren; lareserve.ch

Les Sources de Caudalie Bordeaux, France By Ursula Van der Vorm
S
Ti Sana
Detox Retreat & Spa, Lombardy, Italy By Gabriel O’Rorke
typical day at Ti Sana starts with power walking at 8.30am along the Adda River, juice for breakfast – think courgette, apple, carrot and ginger – and an hourlong fitness session. Lunch is served at the ‘Food Lab’ from 12.30 and consists of a large bowl of salad and dehydrated flax seed crackers, followed by (yes, thanks be to the detox gods, there’s a second course) a faux carb dish like courgette ‘spaghetti’ in a cashew nut sauce (no added spaghetti, of course, just cleverly cut vegetables). Five meals a day doesn’t sound too bad – breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner – but when three of these ‘meals’ are juices, and one day a week is liquid only, things become a little more Spartan. Minimal food and gentle exercise are combined with a medical assessment, blood tests, a doctor’s appointment and a colonic – this is the only spa in Italy with the ‘Angel of Water’ machine which you operate yourself, keeping your dignity intact. The spa is well equipped, stocked with organic products (like the Anika range) and kitted out with
A
an infrared sauna, normal sauna, steam room and several jets and rain showers. Spa treatments, however, are limited to one or two per visit depending on your regime – Raw Food, Juicing or Energising. The focus is very much on what you are (or are not) eating, and the aim is to regulate cortisol levels by exercising in the morning, eating in the middle of the day and practicing Chinese Qi Gong meditation in the evening. This takes place in a large, light studio in one of the restored 18th century terracottaroofed buildings – the hotel is made up of a cluster of these stone houses and the 22 bedrooms are scattered between buildings. You’ll leave enlightened – the emphasis at Ti Sana is on educating guests, with daily lectures on well-being so that you can continue the good work after. Ti Sana has three Active Life Programmes: Juicing Detox fasting; Fresh Lifestyle raw food and Energy Lifestyle with raw and healthy cooked foods. Prices start from EUR 170 per person per day. et amidst the vineyards of the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte estate in Bordeaux, Les Sources de Caudalie is a rural retreat with a twist. Inspired by the concept of the ‘French Paradox’, whereby the diet and lifestyle of Southwest France is seen as conducive to good health, the hotel has taken the concept to heart, playing host the original and now world-famous Vinothérapie spa. Here, treatments are wine-centric, incorporating the benefits of the grapes from the Graves Grand Cru Classé vines which the spa overlooks. During my visit, I sampled the 100% Grape Cure, which involves three oenophilic treatments a day, including the signature Crushed Cabernet Scrub, the merlot wrap, the Fleur de Vigne wrap and the red vine bath. I loved the Wine Maker’s Massage, which involved a smooth, wooden stick usually used for crushing grapes being rolled over my back to relieve the tension. However, Les Sources de Caudalie is not for dieters – the food is too good. Choose from Michelin-starred fine dining at La Grand’Vigne, Chef Nicolas Masse’s restaurant overlooking the lake, or bistro-style food in La Table du Lavoir, in a 19thcentury wash house formerly used by winegrower’s wives – both too delicious for words. The 3 day Grape Cure costs EUR 525. Stays from EUR 250 per room per night; sources-caudalie.com

ince launching our Shoreditch office at the beginning of the month we have been delighted with the response we’ve received. This has led to us seeing a record level of instructions in the first week. The lettings market, as most veteran tenants will tell you, is very seasonal. The approach of the height of summer and bigger blue chip companies facilitating large scale corporate migration of their staff means that that demand will outstrip supply. My advice for anyone considering moving during this busy time is to look smartly to avoid disappointment. My key tips for surviving the summer market are:

EDMUND CUDE
LAUNCH IN BLOOMSBURY
he launch of our new sales office in Bloomsbury marks an important milestone in the 195 year history of Edmund Cude. The company has come a long way since opening in 1818 and it’s fair to say that we’re an old hand when it comes to the London property market. The acquisition of established London-based brand Bushells in July 2012 broadened Edmund Cude’s offering to cover sales as well as lettings and enabled us to provide other communities across London with a dependable and professional service. The results speak for themselves, with performance across the Bushells brand up 35 per cent in Q1 2013 compared with Q1 of 2012. The logical next step for us
•
Register with your agents early and strike up a good rapport with them, as this means you are usually the first person that jumps into their head when they get a new property launching to market.
•
Use individual agents’ websites rather than the larger web portals as these, more often than not, will work in real time.
•
Have a clear picture in your mind of your list of requirements and always know the things you will and won’t compromise on.
•
Do your homework and know what your budget should realistically be in order to successfully acquire your dream home.
•
Give your agent clear feedbackgood, bad or ugly, so that they can ensure you start to see more relevant property.
Kate Bentley, Lettings Manager of Keatons Shoreditch 020 3535 7788; keatons.com
was to expand our sales service across Edmund Cude’s office network. The Bloomsbury office represents the initial stage of this expansion, being the first of five planned launches. On opening at the beginning of May, the office already possessed an extensive portfolio of properties to sell as well as a far-reaching database of buyers actively looking in the area. Combine that with Edmund Cude’s already established reputation as one of the leading lettings operators in the area and you begin to understand why the new office is quite so busy! e are a block of 15 flats and are considering Right to Manage. Can you give us some practical advice about managing our building? The ‘Right to Manage’ is the statutory right of leaseholders to take over the management of their building (under the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Act 2002). It is a powerful tool, which subject to meeting criteria and without the need to pay a premium to the landlord, entitles leaseholders to carry out most duties that a landlord is obliged to undertake under the terms of your leases. For example, arranging the insurance, repair and maintenance of the building, providing heating and cleaning of the common parts, overlooking major works and generally the day to day management of the building. Generally, leaseholders wish to take over the management of their block because they

OWN WORDS
SALLY HARRIS, SALES AND LETTINGS DIRECTOR OF ISLINGTON PROPERTIES
love people and am naturally sociable, so it was no surprise when I was drawn towards estate agency. I love my working environment and feel so lucky to be based in Islington. Over the years I have enjoyed seeing the stylish new architecture of many of the new build projects, and have always loved the beautiful properties on offer here. I have a passion for period property and their original features. The coal scrapers outside the front doors of many Georgian and Victorian properties still delight me after all these years! I never tire of working on vibrant Upper Street, which regularly has a new shop or restaurant springing up. When I’m not being an estate agent I love eating out and Upper Street offers so many yummy options so you are never short of choice. My new favourite is La Farola Café Bistro on the corner of Theberton Street and Upper Street. They do a delicious selection of tapas with a contemporary twist and it’s a great spot to people watch. I will always adore Fredericks and also Mem and Laz, both very different, yet are staples of the area that have survived the test of time. I also enjoy walking and Islington had an abundance of lovely garden squares. The gorgeous Highbury Fields and the secret Barnsbury woods also hold hours of fun for me. I have been closely associated with Islington for most of my life. My mother was a teacher & head teacher in Islington for over 30 years and I attended Canonbury Primary School as a child. I started work as an estate agent in Muswell Hill and was later promoted
to Branch Manager in the Upper Street office. I found myself in Islington Properties after a client of mine, with a background in finance, felt there was a niche in the market for a high quality letting and managing agent. The block management side of the business grew very quickly, and as a result, he soon asked me to join him to develop the estate agency part of the business. We had worked together for many years while I was at other corporate agencies and he knew I had extensive knowledge of the local area and market. Together we wanted to create an agency that provided high levels of customer service combined with a transparency and integrity that we felt was missing in many agents. We provide a corporate standard of service with the flexibility and personal touch that only an independent agent can offer. Islington has been firmly established as a great property investment for many years but during the last five years in particular there have been huge developments in the East side. This has filtered through into the City and around the Wenlock Basin and the regeneration of N7 is beginning to really push prices up in that part of Islington too. Roads around Angel, Barnsbury, Canonbury and Highbury continue to hold their appeal and have also grown steadily in terms of price. All in all, I know there’s nowhere else I would rather be. I love the diversity of the demographic living here, the style of properties, the wonderful local amenities and all the beauty of the area.
